Politics / Libya Returnees Reject N1,000 Fares In Edo by Kayus4real: 6:44am On Jan 11, 2018
Returnees yesterday rejected the N1,000 fares given to them by the Edo State government. People yesterday morning stormed the premises of Benin Motel Plaza where the returnees are lodged to look for their relatives. They peeped through the fence.
A woman, who gave her name as Boss, said she was looking for her brother, Aminu. She said she last heard from him in September 2016.

Another man said he visited the hotel each time he heard Nigerians returned from Libya to search for his daughter. The returnees said it was sad that they were still wearing the prison uniforms given to them in Libya. They claimed that an announcement by the Federal Government that Nigerians should return home, made Libya policemen to arrest them.

The returnees alleged that they lost money during the arrest and
deportation. Efosa Clifford, 43, said he spent over N1.3 million on his failed trip to Europe.

He said: “Life is good in Libya. But unfortunately, blacks have no free movement Gabriel Edokpaigbe said it would be a shame for him to go back to
his father’s home after he sold his belongings to travel to Europe. He said the N1,000 fare would not take him to his destination.
Christian Otoide, who said he is based in Lagos State, added that he was still wearing a prison uniform “because I have no clothes.”
He said they were promised many things in Libya and he was forced to join the Federal Government flight, instead of the IOM programme.

“How will N1,000 take me to Lagos? We were working in Libya, but the police told us that our government said our country is good
now.”

Romance / An Ode To She by Kayus4real: 11:05pm On Jan 04, 2018
*An Ode to She,

And she shows a neck like the neck of a white deer;
It is neither disproportionate, nor ornamented.

Emerald-black eyes and blazing black hair, like a Royal Princess of Westeroth from the Game of Thrones.

Pale, silk-like skin and wafer-thin lips.

As for her smile, It brightens the darkness of the night, as if she were the light-tower of a monk.

The smile looked like the smile of a pomegranate, like a rose whose petals have opened overnight, like a diamond which transforms the darkness of the world into sheer light.

In complexion, she is like the first egg of the ostrich- white, mixed with yellow.
She looked like the moon of the fourteenth day.

And now to the whole picture,
To look at, she is like an Arabian moon.
Under the dark shadow of her hair, her face is a lamp, or rather a torch, with ravens weaving their wings around it.

Towards one like her, the weak man gazes incessantly and lovingly.

She is well proportioned in height between the wearer of a long
dress and of a short frock.

And who would have thought that such overwhelming sweetness could flow from so small a mouth?

Thumbs up guys. You guys are Marvellous! Approaching a girl and getting her number is not my problem. I am quite good at that. The problem is how to initiate a conversation later on, either on call or chats and get her interested. My question is, after getting the number, what next and how to do it right?

Celebrities / Being Single Is Not A Disease – Dayo Amusa by Kayus4real: 6:43pm On Dec 08, 2017
Actress and musician, Dayo Amusa took to her Instagram to
address singles.
According to her, it’s not a disease and there are lots of things to
live for and be happy about.

She wrote;

“BEING SINGLE ISN’T A DISEASE
When did being single become some sort of disease
that everyone wants to get rid of? Why does
everyone think that being in a relationship or married
is superior to being alone?
If you’re single and unhappy about it, Let’s have an
interactive session with these few points. * Things
can change. And they will – I don’t care if you’ve
been single for several decades or several days.
Remember, anything and everything is possible. You
just need to get out of your own way and start
believing that. * Have standards – Don’t just date
someone because you don’t want to be alone. You
need to have the mindset that anyone who doesn’t
want you is a fool, and so you wouldn’t want them
anyway. * Use this time to learn about yourself –
Often, people use being with others as an escape, an
escape from themselves. If you’re with others, then
the focus is on them, not you. But how well do you
really know yourself? Being single is a precious time
that can be used to really get to know and love
yourself. So spend the time getting to know you.
Discover new things. Work on personal growth. *
Don’t chase anyone – And I mean it. Don’t even
think about it! If they have to be chased, then they
don’t want you. If someone is showing you that they
would rather not be with you, Shrug your shoulders
and move on. It’s their loss not yours. * Learn to
love your own company & be focus – You’re
awesome! You’re cool! If you don’t believe me, then
you are wrong. Everyone is perfect in their own
way. The problem is many people especially single
people don’t believe it. Focus on your great job,
wonderful friends, your health, your car, food on your
table — you name it. When you focus on the good
things, your vibration will change to being positive.
Other people will pick up on it and want to be around
you even more than they already do. * Keep busy
with things that make you happy – Do you like
running? Do you love to read or Do you like to go to
happy hour with your friends? Do it! The more you
keep busy, the less you’ll focus on the negatives of
being single ( Keep busy and have fun, you never can
tell who is watching.

Foreign Affairs / I Ran Away To Libya To Escape My Dad’s Sexual Demands —returnee by Kayus4real: 5:15pm On Dec 08, 2017
Miss Loveth Ekumabo , 25 - year- old Libya returnee , has blamed her father's incestuous behaviour for her decision to flee to Libya , at least, for safety from her father , and also in search of greener
pasture.
However , as it turned out , her case is akin to jumping from the
frying pan into fire ;as she has, in her life , gone through bitter
experiences, especially during her stay in Libya , where she underwent forced labour and became a victim of serial rape.
Ekumabo , from Uhunwode local government , is one of the hundreds of Edo indigenes that have been repatriated from Libya . They are currently in the custody of the state government undergoing rehabilitation for effective integration into society.
Aside her traumatic experience during her seven - month sojourn in
the North African country , pregnant Ekumabo may have to live
with the pain of not knowing the father of her unborn child.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, she cursed all
those who raped her in Libya , including her biological father , whose
incestuous action at home , she claimed, was responsible for her
present predicament.

Narrating her ordeal , Ekumabo said her father ’ s attempted acts of
incest drove her to Libya . She alleged that the exposure of her
father ’ s attempted incestuous relationship with her resulted in a big family row .
“After I exposed what my father wanted to do to me , fight broke
out at home and I had to run away for my safety.
“ I went to stay with my friend who introduced me to the man that
helped people to Europe.
“ I did not have any money ; so , I was made to swear to an oath in
a shrine in Benin that I will pay back every kobo when I get to
Europe.
“ We agreed that I will pay back N 200 , 000 . I left Benin for Kano in
April 2017. From Kano , we were transported in a Hilux truck
through the dessert, with no food or water , to Agadez in Niger
Republic and from there to Tripoli in Libya.

“ If you want to cross from Agadez to Tripoli without money , you
either get raped as a girl or get beaten up as a boy . The agency
can also sell you out as slave to get their money before you are
allowed to cross to Tripoli with your new owner .
“ I saw dead people; boys being killed ; girls raped to death ; and
people sold as slaves .
“ The worst part is that Nigerians are among those Arabs who
treat fellow Nigerians badly .
“ It was while I was about to cross to Tripoli that four Arab men
raped me continuously without stop ; after which I was allowed to
cross to Tripoli where I discovered that I was pregnant .
” The church where Nigerians worship in Tripoli advised me to go
back to Nigeria since I cannot do any other work here now that I
am pregnant . ”

Sounding confused , Ekumabo said she did not get any comfort or
words of encouragement from her immediate family . Her biological
mother forbade her to return home “ empty handed, ” she said .
“ When I called my family that I was coming back , my mother asked
them to tell me to stay back and try my best to cross to Europe.
“ But I said to myself that since she was not the one who sent me
to Libya , she had no right to tell me to cross to Europe, ” Ekumabo
said.
She explained that the Edo State Government has advised her to
keep the pregnancy and has promised to give her accommodation
where she will stay and be delivered of the baby .

Food / Foreign Rice In Nigeria Smuggled, Some Poisonous – FG by Kayus4real: 7:17am On Dec 08, 2017
The Federal Government on Thursday declared that all foreign brands of rice in the country at the moment were smuggled , adding that some of them were poisonous . According to the government , recent tests conducted by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development showed that most imported rice and poultry products were poisonous , as the commodities had been stored for several months before being shipped to Nigeria and neighbouring countries. It also stated that the different varieties of rice currently consumed in Nigeria were smuggled based on submissions by the Consumer Protection Council that it had not seen any ‘Form M ’ for rice importation since the beginning of this year. An ‘e - Form M ’ , as it is popularly called , is a mandatory documentation process put in place by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria to monitor goods that are imported into the country as well as enable collection of import duties where applicable . Speaking in Abuja at a stakeholders’ engagement programme on how to stop the importation and smuggling of frozen poultry and rice into the country , the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, noted that it was the duty of the government to protect citizens against any form of harm. He stated , “ For imported rice , we don ’ t know how long it had been in their (exporters) silos . Recently , one country decided to bring in a shipload of rice into Nigeria so that we can use it to support the IDPs ( Internationally Displaced Persons ) in the North - East , but when we subjected the rice to a test , we discovered that the rice was actually poisonous . “ This means that most imported rice have been in silos for 10 to 15 years and have no nutritional value . So what we have told them is that anybody who wants to support the IDPs or any other person in Nigeria should please use our local rice . The argument is that local rice is more expensive, but we say even if it means buying half bags , do it . “ It is better for us to eat a smaller quantity of nutritious rice than for us to take poisonous shiploads of rice . Also , we discovered that chemicals used for smuggled poultry products are the ones used for embalming corpses . So what we want Nigerians to know is that anybody who eats smuggled poultry products is actually embalming himself while still alive . ” Lokpobiri told participants at the event , including operators of superstores and international hotels , among others , that enforcement officers from agencies of the Federal Government would start visiting their outlets to ensure that smuggled and illegally imported products were not sold to Nigerians.

Politics / Imo State Govt Bans Commercial Tricycle Operators. by Kayus4real: 5:22pm On Dec 06, 2017
The Imo State Government has banned tricycle operators from plying all roads within the state capital , Owerri. Consequently , commuters, including civil servants, school children, teachers and market women trekked long distances to their destinations . The stranded commuters castigated the state government for “ compounding” their predicament by banning the much popular means of movement in the town . “ They ( government ) said they were on a rescue mission, but the opposite is the case . “ How can a government which claims to have the interest of the masses at heart ask the Keke operators to stay away from the roads ? What do they want us to do? Where are the taxi cabs they said they had introduced to replace the Keke operators?” a female civil servant who did not mention her name said . A visit to Douglas, Wetheral, Royce , Tetlow and School roads showed frustrated commuters who waited for hours for commercial vehicles to get to their destinations . It was however , gathered that Toyota buses , which were said to have been procured by the state government to ease the situation and which bear the inscription “ Imo Black Cab , ” were seen plying most of the roads ; while the “ Taximo ” cab intermittently plied the Orlu , Orji , Egbu, Naze and Obinze axis . Reacting to the situation, the Commissioner for Information, Prof . Nnamdi Obiareri , said there was no going back on the ban of the commercial tricycle operators by the government . Obiareri said the state government took the decision to checkmate the activities of hoodlums who use tricycles , especially at odd hours , to perpetrate heinous crimes , as well as to restore sanity within the state capital .

Education / 12 Uniabuja Medical Students Fail Final Exam After 12 Years by Kayus4real: 10:53am On Nov 29, 2017
Twelve of the 30 pioneer medical students of the University of Abuja ( UNIABUJA ), who enrolled in 2005, failed their final examinations, an official has said.
Mr Waziri Garba, Deputy Registrar UNIABUJA in charge of Informationand Publications, made this known in an interview in Abuja on Monday.
He said that results of the students’ final professional examinations,
released on Nov. 24, showed that five of the 18 successful medical
students passed with distinction in surgery.
Garba said that the 18 successful students would be inducted on Dec. 2
According to him, the induction is significant since the students werethe first set.
“The induction ceremony, which will hold at the main campus of the
university, will feature a lecture by a renowned member of the medical profession, Prof. Adetokumbo Ademola.
“Ademola is a Professor of Public Health, Obstetrics and Gynaecology,’’ he said.
Garba said that the pioneer Provost of the University’s College of
Health Sciences, Prof. Jam Otubu, would be honoured at the event.
NAN reports that the pioneer medical students could not graduate all the while due to non-accreditation the university’s medicine and
surgery course, by the National Universities Commission.

The course has, however, secured full accreditation. The then Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, in April 2012, announced suspension of medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine
and engineering courses in the university, after a panel set up to
assess needs of universities visited the institution.
The students had sometimes staged peaceful protests against their
continued stay in school, demanding to be transferred to other
universities.

Celebrities / Why I’ve Gone Back To School – Mr. Latin by Kayus4real: 1:47pm On Nov 26, 2017
Comic actor , Bolaji Amusan , aka Mr . Latin , has explained what
motivated him to go back to school despite shooting to stardom .
Thirty - five years after he completed his secondary school education , he is now an undergraduate at the National Open University of Nigeria, where he is studying Peace and Conflict Resolution.
He told Sunday Scoop that if he had been well educated , he would
have gone far in the entertainment industry .
“ John Okafor and others are fantastic actors and comedians , but they are not better than us . They are just fortunate to be speaking a universally - accepted language and they are all graduates too . So, if I can add a little bit of education to my profile, I believe I will go places. That has been my determination and I am working towards it, ” he stated .
He went ahead to say that regardless of all that King Sunny Ade and King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal , aka KWAM 1 , have achieved , the likes of Davido and Wizkid still have an edge over them .
He said , “ If KSA and KWAM 1 go to Uganda or any other country , the way they would be accepted will be different from the way Wizkid, Olamide and Davido would be accepted.

“The younger artistes sing with English Language even though they
still add the local dialect . It means people in other countries will relatewith their music better . Whether we like it or not , the truth is that Yoruba language is limited to a small set of people".

According to Mr . Latin , most of his friends are now in high places in,the government and other sectors, arguing that he might be calledupon to work in any capacity some day .
He added , “ So, I don't know what will happen tomorrow . I may be fortunate to venture into politics or I may be fortunate to have a
friend in the Presidency , who is passionate about the theatre and
thinks I can be of help . But if I don't have a certificate to back it up, I will not be able to do it.
“ I know it is not easy combining acting and schooling , but I try to
make both work . It is all about having a scale of preference and using your time well . I work during the day and I study at night . I make use of the Internet well too".

He stated that he had realised that without education, one’s achievement would be limited , saying provided one was ambitious ,
there was a need to seek knowledge .
He added , “ Gani Adams went back toschool and it has paid off .
Same thing applies to Odunlade Adekola . I just implore everyone to add education to whatever we do so that people will appreciate us better. ”

On why it took him 35 years to realise the importance of education ,he said , “ I came from a very poor background . My mother sold Ogi (pap ) while my father was a hunter . They could not afford to send me to the university . I had to work hard to get to where I am today . Now that I can eat two times in a day , I can afford to send myself to school too."

gotten married to Iceberg. She said, “ I did not get married and like I explained, that picture was taken on the set of a project we’re
working on. I don't know who leaked it. If we want to do something like that ; trust me , we wouldn't t hide it. ”

On whether they do have plans to get married anytime soon , Juliet
said, “ I really don't want to say anything further about this . If I want to take any major decision , I will surely let my loved ones know about it.”

Celebrities / "Actresses Fear Coming To My Hotel Room At Locations" – Antar Laniyan by Kayus4real: 9:09am On Nov 25, 2017
Anyone who has had the opportunity of watching the ace actor, Antar Laniyan, work behind the scene would know that he can be likened to a soldier whenever he is working . In fact, it is a general knowledge among actors that he is not one to mess with while shooting. In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, the actor stated that his sternness on movie location is for a reason .

He said , “If you are disciplined and you don't put romance with women first as an actor, you would go far . If you believe that as an actor, you don't need women all around you, then you would remain relevant because you would concentrate on your craft . I directed ‘SuperStory' for about 10 years but no woman entered my room in the camp. You can ask Wale Adenuga himself. There were amorous advances from women but I shunned them. I am feared while on set.

As a lady , you cannot see me and have the courage to approach me with your amorous advances. People would even tell you not to try it with me; they would advise the ladies not to wink at me because I would just slap them. It is not that I am wicked but I want my cast and crew members to do what is expected of them . You don't the have to give me anything to gain what you do not deserve. Use your talent and let me acknowledge that you are good at your work. You don't have to bribe me with your body.

“When I am working, I let discipline guide me. I don ’ t care if you are befriending the producer ; but as a director, I want a disciplined actor in front of me. I do not go to the location to wine and dine; instead I go to work . When it comes to working , I am like a man that goes to the war front with the mindset of winning the war . If I don't face my work squarely , it is the same people that are commending me that would condemn me and I don't want that.

I want to be an evergreen actor. Look at the likes of Oga Bello and Prince Jide Kosoko, they started in 1964 and they are still relevant today . At the time they started, I was just a year old."
Although he might be seen as someone to be feared on set, the actor confided in Saturday Beats that he is the exact opposite at home . He said his wife is his harshest critic when he does not play a romantic role convincingly.

“My wife knows who I am to the extent that if I do not romance a woman properly in a play, she would ask me why I did not kiss her well. I have always had her support and that has given me the guts to go to any length in a romantic scene.

He told Saturday Beats that he and his sons are best of friends. “If I give you any of my son's phone number, he would tell you that I am his best friend in the house. I have two boys but when I get home ,we all play like three boys in the house . My sons see me more as afriend ; in fact, when they were still toddlers , I used to call them best friends. I have never flogged my children. I am fortunate to have good children who listen to us. Their mother is the tough one ; she is the one with the iron hand,” Laniyan said.

Crime / Girl Who Lost Her Tube After Pastor Impregnated Her, Had Abortions For Him by Kayus4real: 9:49am On Nov 18, 2017
sixteen-year-old girl who was impregnated by a Lagos pastor,
Tunde Daniel, and lost her fallopian tube to an ectopic pregnancy,
underwent multiple abortions for the priest, the police have
revealed.
Saturday PUNCH had reported last week how Daniel was arrested
after the case came to light through the Child Protection Network
that the head of the Royal Heritage Church, Mafoluku, Lagos, had
been sexually abusing the teenager since she was 15.
He had taken the girl to the High Rocks Hospital, Oshodi-Isolo,
claiming to be her guardian and that she was impregnated by her
boyfriend.
The hospital claimed that a procedure was conducted on her to
save her life when it was learnt that her case had become critical
due to the ectopic pregnancy.
But the police had now identified another hospital where the pastor
had allegedly taken the girl for abortions in the past.
The doctor of the hospital, God’s Own Clinic, Iyana-Ipaja, who was
identified as Dr. Nosa, was arrested
On Thursday, Nosa and Daniel were arraigned before an Ikeja
Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on four counts of defilement, conspiracy,
abduction and unlawful abortion on a child.
They were later granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with
two sureties in like sum.
They were both remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison pending
when they would be able to meet their bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned till January 11, 2018.
The Coordinator of CPN in Isolo and Ejigbo, Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile,
who brought the case to light, said the Department of Public
Prosecution had already requested for the case files on both men.
“This is a victory for CPN and all that contributed to this very end.
Nobody is above the law and every parent should be on guard. CPN
is always on the lookout for predators like this pastor.
“Kudos to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police
Command, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, who ensured justice is served. We
must appreciate the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Domestic and
Sexual Violence Response Team for their efforts too.”

Health / Don’t Wash Female Babies’ Genitals With Medicated Soap –doctor by Kayus4real: 5:46pm On Nov 17, 2017
A paediatric doctor, Dr. Juliet Ochi, has urged mothers and care - givers to avoid the use of medicated soap in washing the genitals of their female babies to prevent infection. Ochi, a doctor at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital , gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Enugu . According to her , it is better to use toilet soap . “ The genitals of the female have useful bacteria that protect it . The use of medicated soap could damage such bacteria , thereby causing an infection in that region . “ Medicated soap is meant for the skin . It is only on the prescription of a dermatologist that such soap should be used . “ Some (bacteria ) are important and protect the region from contacting infection, so using medicated soap on it will mean removing them . “ Not all bacteria in the genital region are bad , some are very important and protect the vagina from germs . “ If you use medicated soap on the region , it means you are weakening the vagina’ s defence system , thereby attracting infection to the region , ’’ she said . Ochi urged females to always use mild toilet soap when washing their genitals . She explained that medicated soaps make the vagina unfavorable for the good bacteria , which could lead to candida, a fungus that causes yeast infection in females. ( NAN )

Crime / Ruthless Mafia Boss, Toto Riina Who Ordered 150 ‘hits’ Dies by Kayus4real: 7:47am On Nov 17, 2017
Former “ boss of bosses ” Toto Riina , one of the most feared Godfathers in the history of the Sicilian Mafia, died early Friday after battling cancer , Italian media reported. Riina , who had been serving 26 life sentences and is thought to have ordered more than 150 murders, had been in a medically - induced coma after his health deteriorated following two operations . The mobster , who turned 87 on Thursday, died in the prisoners ’ wing of a hospital in Parma in northern Italy just before 4 am (0300 GMT) , according to the country ’ s main dailies and ANSA news agency . The hospital would not immediately confirm his death . His wife and three of his four children had been given permission by Italy ’ s health ministry Thursday for a rare visit to say goodbye. Riina ’ s eldest son Giovanni is serving a life sentence for four murders . “ You ’ re not Toto Riina to me, you ’ re just my dad . And I wish you happy birthday dad on this sad but important day , I love you , ” his other son Salvatore wrote on Facebook on Thursday . An ageing Riina asked in July to be released from prison on the grounds of serious illness — a request that was denied after a court ruled the care he received behind bars was as good as he would get on the outside . Doctors said at the time that the former boss was “ lucid” . He was caught on a wiretap earlier this year saying he “ regrets nothing … They’ ll never break me, even if they give me 3, 000 years ” in jail . Riina ’ s most high- profile ordered hits were the assassinations in 1992 of anti - mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino , who had worked fearlessly to bring more than 300 mobsters to trial in 1987 . He was also behind a series of bombings in Rome , Milan and Florence that killed 10 people. “ God have mercy on him , as we won’ t , ” said an association for victims of the Florence blast, according to the Fatto Quotidiano daily.

Politics / Prof. Osinbajo Helped A Handworking Typist Long Time Ago, Handwork Pays by Kayus4real: 7:42pm On Nov 14, 2017
According to a Facebook post from the Vice president of Nigeria, prof Yemi osinbajo which goes thus...

While I was teaching at the University of Lagos, as a young lecturer, in the department of Public Law in the Faculty of Law, there were 3 typists in the department. The chief typist, senior typist, and the
junior typist. Because in those days before laptops and personal
computers, typists in universities had to do a lot of work and they
were very important because you always needed to type all your
materials.

When there was work to do, what l discovered was that the chief
typist would disappear. He works only till 4 pm. The senior typist
would be nowhere to be found. But a gentleman called Adereni the
junior typist, who only had his school certificate, was remarkably
hardworking. Sometimes I would drop him off at his home at 1am.
Years after I was working as an adviser to the then Attorney-General of the Federation Hon. Bola Ajibola, who later became a judge of the World Court. While in the court at The Hague, in the Netherlands.

One day he called me and asked if I could recommend a good secretary who is hard working and could do long judgments. I had three options, chief typist, senior or this junior typist, but the junior typist at a time had only school certificate, he didn’t have any other
qualification but l choose him. He got to the Hague, and typically
worked hard and diligently. Every judge in the court wanted him to
work with them. He later moved his family over to the Hague and got degrees and made a good living for himself. One day he remembered me and actually sent me a car.

Politics / Betty Akeredolu: I Survived Breast Cancer By Removing My Breast by Kayus4real: 6:51am On Nov 12, 2017
I chose to remove my breast to survive cancer –Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu

Mrs. Betty Akeredolu is the wife of the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN). She talks about the need for adequate awareness on breast cancer and how she survived an encounter with the disease with PETER DADA

How would you describe your encounter with breast cancer?

I am a breast cancer survivor, 20 years now and still counting. It all started in 1997 when I was diagnosed with it. I never knew anyone who had that experience and the little information I got from the cable television stations wasn’t something we were familiar with. That morning when I felt something in my breast, of course, my mind raced to breast cancer because of where the thing was located. I was scared because I didn’t know what to do. It happened when I was resting at home during my annual leave. It got me thinking of what to do if it turned out to be breast cancer.

How old were you at the time?

I was forty-two or forty-three

What thought came to your mind when you discovered it was cancer?

My little children came to my mind; I thought of what would become of them.

What did you do next?

I kept it to myself for almost one week. I didn’t know what to do. My baby was four years old or thereabout. I tuned to television one morning and what I heard was a programme being advertised that it could save one’s life. Immediately I heard that, I just stood up from the bed and sat down, wondering what the programme was all about. It happened to be a programme about a breast cancer survivor’s journey. I cannot explain such a coincidence.

It really saved my life. There was this white woman on the show and it was her journey through breast cancer that was on air. She happened to be the mother of popular Hollywood actors, the Bubbling Brothers; they are popular in Hollywood. She went through the treatment and then called herself a survivor. She was sharing her experience to the world. She used the chronicle of her journey to lift up the spirit of those undergoing such experience and I benefitted from it. That was how I summoned the courage to go to the hospital. I said whatever this woman did to survive and ensure her story’s positive impact on other women suffering from same ailment, I am going to be like her.

It was after the examination that the doctor again confirmed there was a lump. Even at that stage, he didn’t know what it was. I want to quickly emphasise something; it is part of the awareness campaign on breast cancer – that when a woman notices a lump in her breast, she cannot say what that lump is until she sees a doctor. It is the doctor that will recommend a test. It is after the test that she can know whether what she has is breast cancer or not.

What was the reaction of your husband when you informed him?

When I told my husband, he was scared but he didn’t know that I had been fortified by the TV programme I watched. I think he must have wondered where I got the strength because I was on my feet and already prepared that whatever that woman did, I was going to do it and be okay. From then, my treatment commenced. The next line of treatment was mastectomy. By then, the level of my breast health care was at the rudimentary level. That was in 1997. It was still the same radical mastectomy; I said remove the damn thing if that would make me live. We did that and the rest is history.

What motivated you since many women may find it difficult to take the bold step you took?

Like I always tell women, surviving breast cancer is all about attitude. If you lose it, it can be very difficult because some women, immediately they are told they would lose their breasts, are already gone. Some of them will say, their husband may marry another woman with two complete breasts. The man shouldn’t be on the radar; rather, the women should be more concerned about their children. They must do everything to live and take care of the children because they can not tell the character of the woman that their husbands would marry. Some women reject mastectomy and run to a pastor who will be giving them holy water or Jerusalem oil to rub on the affected part because they don’t want to lose their breasts; but at the end of the day, they return with decayed breasts. Is it not better you lose breast and live and be well for your children and husband than be preoccupied that your husband will leave you and marry someone else? You have to live before you talk about enjoying marriage.

One comes first before the other. Being one-breasted doesn’t really define you. Like I told a woman, when your husband first saw you, he never saw your unclothedness. Even after mastectomy, you can still have a baby; yes, you can breastfeed with one breast. But you must be alive to do that.

What is your view on the belief of many that it is better to seek medical help abroad when diagnosed with breast cancer?

I had a successful treatment and everything was done at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. That also brings the point that the country doesn’t know what it has because we have everything to make this country great. I think those that are taking the decisions are the ones not talking highly of what this nation can be. When I had the surgery, there was petrol scarcity. We bought fuel in jerrycan and went to my consultant to give him to use because I needed to get the treatment done. I was lucky mine was found at stage one. It took me one week and I went to the hospital. There were other women, because the symptom wasn’t painful, they carried on not knowing that they were delaying something dangerous.

Do you think there is enough awareness about breast cancer at the grass roots?

Awareness is not enough because you need to first let them understand the behaviour of the disease. If you don’t explain to them, they will keep thinking it is juju and spiritual attack. We need to have robust awareness and consistency too, like what was done to HIV/AIDS. I think we should bring breast cancer to that level and keep talking about it. A woman must be familiar with her breasts. If she is not familiar with how her breasts look, there is no way she can notice any unusual change. When you tell our women to do this, they will tell you ‘God forbid’ and that they are covered by the blood of Jesus.

We must figure how to explain it to our women, especially those who didn’t receive much education. We need to bring it down to our people so that they don’t have to waste their time at prayer mountains: science is science. We can still break it down to the language they understand. In China, everything is expressed in Chinese and it is the same thing with most Asian countries. The science that is being taught in English, they translate it to their local languages. Nobody should think that breaking down science in our local languages is difficult. It is not, we only need the political will so that people can understand what is going on and take advantage of knowledge. That is why people like us, who survived and still living productive life, need to put our faces on breast cancer so that people can know that they can survive it. It is not a death sentence. I don’t think anyone should die of breast cancer again.

When did the idea of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria start?

It started barely six months after I was discharged from the hospital. When we started, nobody wanted to be part of BRECAN because after getting to UCH and discovering that some women were also getting treatment for various stages of the disease, I was disturbed. I discussed with my consultant that I wouldn’t keep quiet about the disease. I never knew that people could go to the hospital, get treatment and keep quiet about what they were experiencing. I wouldn’t do that and that was how the idea to start an NGO came up.

How has it been since you started?

The idea came that other women too can benefit; that they don’t have to wait and that if they wait, it would be bad for them, was like a mission. I couldn’t recruit anyone among the women with me in that ward, not even one. I reached out to my friends. They are healthy women, nothing is wrong with them, but they felt they should identify with a friend. They joined BRECAN because they wanted to save the world and to support a friend because they saw the passion in me. It sparkled something in me. I didn’t know I had the capacity. I heard people said because they heard me speak on television and on radio; they mustered the courage to go to the hospital. Now, we have eight BRECAN chapters across the nation. The mother chapter is in Oyo State. When my friends followed me, gradually we began awareness.

What are the challenges facing the project?

The major challenge is money. We wrote letters to banks and companies but there was no response. Even the focus on the international community then was on malaria and AIDS. It is only now that cancer is gaining attention because we are persistent. Sometimes, we use strong words against government. We were 20 years last month.

We have doctors who we are partnering with in the UCH, OAU, LUTH, Abuja and FMC, Owo. We have radiotherapy machines in this country but they aren’t working. Sometimes, if one is working in Ibadan, the entire cancer patients in Nigeria will go there and this is part of cancer treatment protocol that every patient must undergo. Look at India; they are raking in foreign currencies from Nigerians because we fail to put our house in order. Policymakers fail to give attention to cancer, forgetting that it is one of the diseases one meets along the way as one ages and many Nigerians are aging. Any government that neglects cancer cares little about its citizens. To add salt to the injury, cancer is not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme; I can’t believe it. We are going to lobby for the policy to be reviewed. Is there any day we don’t hear of people dying of cancer? Our people are dying like flies, especially women. Treating cancer is very expensive.

What contribution is your husband, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, making towards the project?

I don’t need to lobby my husband again; he is an indirect survivor. He has to do whatever is within his power to make sure we have a cancer treatment centre. That will, at least, take off the load on the Federal Government. It is overwhelming. The Federal Government can’t do it alone; states should have their comprehensive cancer treatment centres. We can then reach out and partner the primary health care centres so that every woman can visit the nearest health centre for test and examination. Not all doctors can treat breast cancer because it is a specialised area of medicine. The experts can mostly be found in teaching hospitals and Federal Medical Centres. Even in some state hospitals, there are no experts on cancer.
