He said the committee dismissed a letter from HAR Petroleum Resources Ltd absolving itself from engaging in importing the product and could not have sourced for and accessed foreign exchange from CBN. Igbokwe said the company’s participation in the business was confirmed by the documents provided by crude oil marketing department of the NNPC. “We have it on good authority that in 2014, your company applied and got over 11 million dollars, and in 2015, it got another forex of over 14 million dollars from Zenith Bank for the importation of petroleum products into this country. “And you now deny ever engaging in product importation or any of such transactions with the NNPC retail outfits. “Where did the 26 million dollars you took in forex from the bank according to CBN records go to?” Mr. Igbokwe asked the company’s representative, Jefferson Ogunma. Passengers on the Abuja-Kaduna railway route narrate their experiences to Naij.com: Mr. Ogunma said Mr. Alagu was away on official assignment outside the country and added that the company only handled logistical activities on behalf of Total Nigeria plc. Investigations reveal that the 22 committees were involved, including the Committee on the Investigation of Railway Rehabilitation and Modernisation Projects from 2010 to 2014. The ad hoc committees were set up before the speaker appointed 96 standing committees of the current 8th House on October, 22, 2015.ent 8th House on October, 22, 2015. The Punch reports that a major reason for the dissolution of the committees was the alleged non-performance and failure to conclude assignments “over 16 months after some of them were set up.” https://www.naij.com/1095567-reps-invite-emefiele-kachikwu-alleged-diversion-foreign-exchange.html |
Babatunde Fashola, the minister of power, works and housing, has inspected the Omotosho Generation Company Limited's Generation Plant in Ondo state. Fashola and his team inspected the plant which is located at Omotosho in Okitipupa Local Government Area (LGA). NAIJ.com gathered that the people within the region have not properly benefited from the availability of plant, in that, they have been without electricity for the past 3 years. Fashola's visit was part of the minister's itinerary for "Day One" of his inspection tour of highway projects in the South-west zone of the country. Recall that Fashola was in Ekiti state on Thursday, March 23, where he lauded the efforts of Governor Ayodele Fayose. The minister applauded Fayose when the duo inspected some projects within the state. NAIJ.com reported that the minister also berated the federal controller of works in Ekiti State, Hezekiah Kehinde, for siting the ongoing national housing project in a location far from the heart of Ado Ekiti. Fashola said sitting the project in an insecure location was not right. He however applauded Fayose for executing some projects along federal roads describing it as the kind of collaboration that should be emulated by other states with the federal government. https://www.naij.com/1095594-fashola-storms-ondo-state-crucial-power-inspection.html

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on both President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo to “urgently instruct appropriate authorities to promptly and thoroughly investigate apparently sponsored and coordinated attacks against Amnesty International Office in Nigeria, and ensure the safety and security of its staff.” It would be recalled that a group of protesters yesterday barricaded the Abuja office of Amnesty International and asked the international organisation to quit Nigeria within 24 hours. But in a statement today signed by SERAP deputy director Timothy Adewale, the organization called on Buhari and Osinbajo to “act swiftly to end the increasing and apparently sponsored attacks, intimidation, harassment and threats against Amnesty International Office in Nigeria and its staff. Any failure to hold to account those who may be responsible will invariably increase the vulnerability of civil society in the country, and strengthen the perception that attacks against NGOs and human rights workers can happen with impunity.” The statement read in part: “If the Buhari government does not take all necessary measures to immediately end the mob attack on Amnesty International or any other civil society group for that matter, SERAP will be compelled to take appropriate legal action nationally and internationally including approaching the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders for a remedy.” “SERAP will continue to work to challenge any attempt to restrict, silence or eliminate the voices of credible civil society in the country. We urge the presidency to speak out strongly against intimidation and harassment of Amnesty International Office in Nigeria and its staff. Investigating the attacks against AI, naming and shaming the sponsors and bringing them to justice will send a powerful message of protection and support to civil society groups who stand up to speak truth to power.” “Any attack on Amnesty International Office in Nigeria or harassment and intimidation of its staff members is an assault on the entire human rights community in the country. Sponsoring protests against NGOs that have shown astonishing courage in their human rights work hurt those most in need, undermine access of Nigerian victims of human rights violations and abuses to justice, and contribute to a culture of impunity of perpetrators.” “This government has an obligation to support and protect civil society groups and human rights defenders against violence and sponsored attacks. Nigeria is a democratic society and the government can’t just sit back and watch reprisals, threats and increasing hostility to Amnesty International in particular and the NGO community in general.” “Under the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and international human rights law, everyone whose rights are violated is entitled to a right to an effective remedy. Exposing human rights violations and seeking redress for them is largely dependent on the degree of security enjoyed by civil society groups and human rights defenders. Protecting NGOs against sponsored attacks and ending impunity for such attacks is therefore a critical element in the promotion and protection of human rights in this country.” “While some may not like to hear some of the things Amnesty International has said, this in no way justifies this kind of mob attack on its office and staff members. The authorities should show commitment to protecting the right to freedom of expression and guarantee conditions for civil society to flourish.” The post SERAP to Buhari, Osinbajo: Investigate mob attack on Amnesty International appeared first on Vanguard News. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/serap-buhari-osinbajo-investigate-mob-attack-amnesty-international/ |
As the monetary authorities were meeting in Abuja on Monday to review the impact of policies in an effort to stabilise the market and strengthen the value of the national currency, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for the umpteenth time injected atotal of $180 million into the foreign exchange market. The CBN spokesperson, Isaac Okorafor, said the offer, through the inter-bank window, was to enable banks meet bids for wholesale auction and requests for invisibles such as medical and school fees as well as personal/basic travel allowances, which got an allocation of about $80 million.Mr. Okorafor, who confirmed the fresh injection of forex to the market, said the wholesale requests would be settled on Tuesday. He said the Central Bank was optimistic that its continued intervention would impact on the value of the Naira, which has continued to strengthen in the foreign exchange market against other international currencies, including the dollar, pound and euro. The spokesperson of the CBN, Isaac Okorafor, said this on Monday in Lagos. He said the bank was committed to ensuring that authorised dealers get sufficient supply to meet the demands of authentic customers of banks.“The CBN has so far met all the legitimate demands for FOREXfrom genuine customers All legitimate customers should therefore approach the CBN with their complaints should they be unfairly denied access,” Mr. Okorafor said.“We would ensure sustainable FOREX liquidity and transparency in the process to enable as many customers as possible to get access to the foreign exchange they genuinely demand.“We however advise eligible individuals with genuine foreign currency needs to freely approach their banks and authorised dealers with their requests, as the CBN has made adequate provisions of foreign currency for all such legitimate purposes.”Since February when the bank began its intervention in the inter-bank market, over $1.5 billion has been injected, in an effort to stabilize the market and boost the value of the Naira. The CBN intervention in the market on Monday helped lift the rate of the Naira as it continued to extend its gains against the dollar at the parallel market, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)reports. The Nigerian currency exchanged at N440 (buying rate) and N445 (Selling rate) to a dollar, from N445/N450 it traded on Friday, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N530 and N465.At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the Naira exchanged at N398 (buying rate) and N400 (selling rate), while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N545 and N480.Trading at the interbank market showed that the Naira closed at N307.50 to a dollar. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/business-news/226695-forex-central-bank-injects-fresh-180-million-school-fees-medical-fees-others.html |
- The DSS in the Anambra state assures the PDP chairman in the state, Prince Ken Emeakayi, that it is investigating Governor Obiano’s alleged threat against him - Meanwhile, the senior special adviser to the governor on strategic communication and legislative matters, Mr Oliver Okpala, insists the allegations of Emeakayi have no basis Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state is being investigated by the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly threatening the life of Prince Ken Emeakayi, the state chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Emeakayi had alleged that the governor threatened him for calling for his impeachment over constitutional breaches. Emeakayi, in a letter dated March 7, said the governor issued the threat in a telephone discussion with him at about 8pm on Thursday, February 23, 2017. The party chairman who visited the state headquarters of the police and DSS in Awka on Monday, March 20, told newsmen that the purpose of the visit was to enquire if his petition on the matter was received and action being taken. On his part, the director of the DSS in the Anambra state, Mr Yusuf Isyaku, assured Emeakayi that the agency was investigating the allegation. “I have respect for you, you would have come to my office, without coming with these people here today over the matter,’’ he said. But in reaction to the issue, the senior special adviser to the governor on strategic communication and legislative matters, Mr Oliver Okpala dismissed the allegations of Emeakayi as having no basis. The aide said: “When did mere telephone calls transform to violence? That is why I said they are neither here nor there. “Since he has reported to the police and the DSS, he can now wait and see the outcome of the investigation.” In other news, Kemi Adeosun, the minister of finance, on Monday, March 20, stated that the Federal Government would within 12 months carry out a detailed review of the claims submitted by the states as over- deduction on the Paris Club debt. She said that while the states had all submitted their respective claims, President Muhammadu Buhari had reached an agreement with the governors that the reconciliation process be concluded within one year. Punch reports that Adeosun in a statement issued by her meedia adviser, Festus Akanbi, explained that while the debt management office had initially requested for a period of 22 months to complete the reconciliation and facilitate disbursement; the president, after considering the plight of salary earners, directed that the exercise be completed within 12 months. https://www.naij.com/1094838-dss-investigates-gov-obiano-threat-pdp-chairman.html |

Report that Buhari scaling down his schedules after return from London false – Presidency By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA-Presidency, Sunday, said that the report in some quarters that President Muhammadu Buhari upon his return from London on a medical trip scaled down his work-load to get some rest was totally false. It said that Buhari’s resumption week was activity-packed, saying that he never recorded absent for one day. The President’s Media Aide, Mallam Garba Shehu made the refutation in an interview with Pyramid Radio in Kano State, of which the details were later made available to newsmen. He said: “In the first week of his return, President Buhari walked his talk on his intense desire to pay back to Nigerians by way keeping their trust and serving their interests. Prseident Muhammadu Buhari “His reply to the people for their support and trust is to work much harder for them. “The President didn’t have a day off or even a light week at all throughout his week of resumption,” he said. Reacting to a question of what the President’s engagements in his first week after the London trip was, Shehu said the president had time, treating policy issues even when he retired back home. He added that the President took briefings from Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, also met with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara amongst others. “I read those analyses and I believe they were mostly wrong. What they don’t understand is that the President doesn’t follow official working hours because he is on duty all the time. He has another office by his living room. So, he works from home when most civil servants have closed. “He started on Monday with the letters he sent to the two arms of the parliament signifying his return to work. He then went in for a handover briefing by the Vice President. They had a lot to discuss between themselves. Although he gave specific mandates to the Acting President, he needed to be brought up to speed on the developments in the Supreme Court, the Niger Delta, the economy with particular reference to the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERPG which was launched in his absence and programs like the Small and medium Enterprises Clinic which have strong connections to the agricultural strategy of the administration.” “On Tuesday the President followed up his meeting with the Vice President getting details from the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele on the liquidity situation of the country, the issue of reserves and the outlook for the rest of the year. “He then met with the Presiding Officials of the parliament, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara. Those two arms have dealt with the issue of his vacation with great sensitivity. “On Wednesday, the President presided at the Federal Executive Council. “The noticeable thing about the last meeting was that it dwelled on policy. The meeting didn’t discuss contracts. “On Thursday, the President had a joint sitting with the Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, the Ministers of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and that of Budget and Planning, Udoma Udo-Udoma. They discussed the country’s economic situation, the progress on the 2017 budget and liquidity issues. “On the same day, he held a state-of-nation meeting with Governors who had assembled for the routine meeting of the National Economic Council under the Vice President. “Friday was used mostly for security briefing before the Juma’at prayers. The President has big ambitions for the country, driven by an intense desire to leave his mark on national affairs. This is as he said on his return last”, he explained.
