Humchi:
First of all, let me say it is quite encouraging and motivational to many kids out there and here.

Taking or wanting this to happen in Africa we must change some of our mentality.

To be frank with you, alot of parents would scold their child who is taking a lot of time with a laptop than their schoolwork or even wouldn't want his/her child to have it.

Because there is this perception with africa parents that children learn alot of negative things with it and also waste their time.
They choose to criticize a child with a phone or laptop disregarding what the child is learning.

My point is we should allow the kids to explore also with making sure the kid isn't going a perverse way like fraud and all manner of illicit exploration.

According to the post, the kid start at the age of 5, many parents wouldn't let their kids have such privilege of having a laptop or a phone.

Another thing is environment

if you are in a place like nigeria, it is very slim to be like that kid.
At the age of 9, taking about ios, javascript, sql, injection, web development is more like talking garbage to an illiterate Nigeria parent. No support and no encouragement.

Also, availability of material, money and understanding people.

Another point is the perception of "you must go to school to make it big"

this is with Nigeria parents, they won't encourage you when you are having an idea of creating any internet stuff.
If this kid were to be a Nigerian, i can bet, the chance of being what he is today would be slim.

The thing is your environment and your culture.

If you want to be like this kid or someone great like bill gate or mark zuckerberg, in Nigeria here, you must go contrary to how people view things here.
Same parents who wld prevent their child(ren) from pursuing a career in entertainment or whatever they find interest in at a young age.

When u tell your parents you want to focus on music, comedy or sports, the way they violently reject your ideas and suggestions ennn!

We need a total overhaul of mentality in Nigeria; from old to young.

As much as we may want to blame Europeans and Americans for having a huge hand in our problems, Nigerians are a huge problem to themselves.

5 star salute for you, Lieutenant, you can rise as a General now.

That's what Nigerians just don't know. We are vocal about how bad our image is and don't realize it makes matters worse.

Indian is a Rape Capital of the world and over 300 million defecate in the open but you hardly see those aspects in movies.

India and China heavily censors their movies protecting the image of their citizens
Despite their best efforts to hide the truth, still the world knows. If you like censor what your citizens abroad say to foreigners, you cant hide the truth about the true nature of things in your country. It is like pregnancy; you can’t hide it.

Frankly, it's a good thing that the song was banned.

Nigeria already has a bad reputation & the last thing she needs is someone coming to say that EVERYONE IS A CRIMINAL.

I've listened to Childish Gambino's This is America like 10 times. I've even gone through the lyrics & I didn't see or hear where he bashed the country in general.

Despite the fact that America has a very high level of crime. Ranging from credit card theft, robbery, gang wars, murderers, rapists... amoungs others... They even have a corrupt government & law agencies.

But 1 Mr. Falz took it upon himself to tag everybody a criminal. You see Africans mentality? If he tries to travel & they deny him Visa, he'll still come & start talking trash. Meanwhile, he spearheaded the whole thing.

If Falz should sue NBC, he will lose...
The constitution is already backing the NBC

Falz is an idiot for saying 'this is Nigeria, everybody be criminal'...I imagine how that my MEE472 lecturer that year who doesn't take bribe or collect sorting will feel about it. There are good people in this country dammit.
dominique:
I hate that song with a passion, the reason why I have never sat to watch/listen to it more than once in my entire life is because of that particular line.

When you label a population of almost 200 million people as criminals, expect to be banned. Now people are using that line as a justification for getting into fraudulent acts, after all they've already been called criminals anyways. I support the ban, falz take several seats jor.
kirkwood:
But all the things the guy said in the video are true.

He didnt create a fantasy story.

It's time we are strong enough to own our stories.

BTW , it's unfortunate that people have started using this 'This is Nigeria, where everybody is a criminal.' line to abuse Nigerians.

Any slightest encounter with Ghanaians or South Africans, they would shout :'This is Nigeria, where everybody is a criminal.'
Forget for now the fact that other nationalities make fun of us with that line. Lets focus on the real issue here.

Are a large portion of Nigerians corrupt or not??

A country where the average citizen thinks of defrauding and scamming the next man or woman beside him or her, how do u explain that?

The average Nigerian is greedy, selfish, self-centered, rude, brash, impolite and authoritative.

The politicians you keep criticizing for being corrupt and stealing public funds, are they from another country or planet?? Of course not, they are Nigerians.

Nigeria’s politicians and public officers are just a reflection of the true nature of the citizens that make up the Nigerian society.

That person criticizing and accusing politicians up and down for corrupt practices, give him the chance to be in office and watch him do worse.

I am a Nigerian and I would say it over and over again, the present generation of Nigerians are corrupt to the core!

There is no government office you would walk in that you wont be asked to drop something.

Every Ningerian wants to have their hands “wet”

A county where being honest is a rarity.

Finding an honest Nigerian is as difficult as finding water in the desert. Look at the ever growing proliferation of Yahoo boys and they have taken their market abroad to countries like Northern Cyprus and Malaysia. Please don’t tell me its hustling.

So as much as I do not like being called a criminal, Falz is completely right.

This is Nigeria, where everybody be criminal!

That is why the same politicians who loot and steal the future of Nigerian youths jump from party to party because Nigerians understand next to nothing abt politics in their country.

PDP is APC and APC is PDP, just the same politicians either dropping umbrella and picking up brooms or vice versa

No ideology, to manifesto, no political philosophy

This is the sense most Nigerians don’t have. Everything isn't religion. Saftey rules say ‘do not overspeed, overtake at corners and always have your cars regularly checked and maintained’ but in Nigeria, those rules mean nothing. And they rush to thank God and give testimonies after ignoring simple rules.

To the driver, you simply got lucky, many have not been so fortunate and you may not be next time. Obey road safety rules and have your car regularly checked.

a governor allocates 10naira for a project and the whole 10naira is looted yet he walks free

another politician allocates 10naira for a project and 7naira is used to execute the project but he doesn't deserve the slightest accolade in a country where he could have stolen the money completely and walked free!!!

common sense has eluded you!!!

let me give you another analogy

when your father send you to school, it is your responsibility to read your book and pass. if you fail he'll castigate you but if you come second or 3rd in your class he will still buy you a bicycle or a sega console to encourage you to do better next time.

why is he giving you a gift for performing your responsibility?

I'll give you a third example

why do some companies give employee of the month award and some even go as far as giving financial incentives to their staffs even after salaries have been paid? is it not to motivate others to do better?

Illiterates like you want to castigate the bad ones and you can't even give the ones that are still doing a little work a pat on the back.

you need to enroll for leadership training. if you have had Lagos business schools sessions or you've done a couple of courses in human resources management/team work I won't need to explain all the basics of motivation and reward for you!!!

illiteracy is your problem
If you like insult me from now till tomorrow, I still stand on what I said, it is only in Africa that you see public officials being praised and thanked for perfoming their duties.

The excuse of him not looting the money but using it for what he ‘ought’ to have done does not stand.

Trump reduced taxes for Americans, did u see them rush all over social media to thank or praise him, no they did not because that is the least expected of him.

You praise politicians because you have never known good governance in ur life. So any little bread that falls off the table you thank your masters for it.

CONGRATULATIONS is very very different from THANK YOU.

Congratulate your politicians but don’t thank them for what they ought to do for you; for giving you your right. If you do the latter rather than the former, they wld keep taking you for granted.

Get sense!

I rest my case.

One of the most lawless countries in the world. Is it only in Nigeria they move petroleum products from one place to the other?

Until Nigerians begin owning up and seeing that they are the major cause of their problems while not always blaming the government, no improvements wld be made.

Oh my....

Please, can we be more careful on our roads?!

Danfo and passenger, please, stop over speeding and don't drop on wrong places- the place you are over speeding to is never worth your life.

The basics in driving; just using the side mirrors, checking your brakes and car well-being before journeys etc are (no matter how boring) life savers.

You need an experience in driving to know that many people using cars and buses on our roads are disasters waiting to happen. As you drive with care, always be vigilant about other car and bus drivers.

Anytime you have a constructive prick within your spirit (for the spiritual sensitive) not to drive, you might want to keep your ride and use public transport.

Don't ever drive when you are drunk or sleep drowsy.

God help us.
Telling this to Nigerians is like pouring water on a stone.

dasensible1:
After the evacuation, what next? What are the measures to prevent/reduce future occurrence? Most of the trucks on Nigerian roads are disasters waiting to happen. Most are old and badly maintained.

I know a truck owner who encouraged her truck driver to manage the truck on trips from Lagos to the east despite being fully aware that the truck brakes are bad.
Many truck drivers are not licenced, they drink and drive, some even give their trucks to their motorboys to drive while they rest.

The law enforcement agents are culpable as well. You see them at different depots collecting money from truck drivers instead of carrying out their duties of ensuring the trucks are safe to run on the roads.

The various unions too at these depots don't ensure that trucks that are allowed to load petroleum products are safe, because they own most of the trucks on the roads. If the government tries to enact/enforce laws the unions will threaten to embark on strike, hence government and their agencies tries to avoid confrontations with the truck drivers and owners.

Government should fix the rails so many of these trucks will have no reasons to be on the roads. Allow for modular refineries to be built wherever it is possible, so tankers don't have to converge in large numbers in Lagos for loading. Road safety officers instead of looking for gratification should do their jobs, if a truck is bad, it should not load or be allowed to move about on our roads. Movement restrictions should be enforced as well.

These are few of the simple steps that a government/society that is concerned about the safety of lives and properties will take to prevent/limit future occurrences, instead of waiting to send condolences to future victims of avoidable disasters.
One of the few sensible posts I’v seen on Nairaland. Good suggestions
