The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that 800 former Boko Haram fighters are undergoing deradicalisation and rehabilitation.

This programme, tagged Operation Safe Corridor, aims to reintegrate these ex-terrorists into society.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme on Monday, Maj.-Gen. Emeka Onumajuru, Chief of Defence Operations, said the deradicalisation process takes about a year and is carried out by professionals.

He said that the approach is crucial in winning the asymmetric warfare against insurgents, as a purely kinetic approach is insufficient.

He said, “To get the numbers right, right now, (we have) about 129,000 surrendered BH (Boko Haram) members and their families.

“We are a professional army and when you are in combat and an opponent surrenders, then you take him and let the legal processes take its natural course.

“Right now, some of them are detention facilities, some of them are in Kainji, and there is a special court that goes through all of them. Those that were found culpable face the books and those that are going to be deradicalised go through the process and this takes about a year.”

“The deradicalisation carried out by the Operation Safe Corridor is part of the non-kinetic. You cannot win an asymmetrical war with just kinetic approach,” he added.

When asked whether it was possible to deradicalise terrorists and reintegrate them into the society in one year, Onumajuru said, “It’s possible because the deradicalisation is done by professionals. That one-year period is sufficient enough depending on the people handling the deradicalisation.

“The number taken in is not huge. Like I said, we have 129,000 BH members and families. It doesn’t mean the 129,000 are going through the programme. The people going through the programme right now are about 800 – in batches. Those 800 are people that have been sieved through the entire legal process before they are now brought to the centre.”

The Boko Haram is a jihadist terrorist organization based in northeastern Nigeria. The sect has carried out violent attacks against civilians and security forces. The Nigerian military has been battling Boko Haram since 2009, with varying degrees of success.

A 36-year-old Nigerian man accused of stabbing three police officers in a span of 16 hours in the city of Karlsruhe, Germany will be arraigned for attempted manslaughter and various other crimes.

The suspect identified simply as Wisdom .O, lives at an asylum home in Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to reports, the man lived in Italy for several years before moving to Germany.

The trial began on Monday, February 3, 2025.

The public prosecutor says that the man wanted to kill officers on a night train last year.

On July 5, 2024, the migrant received €200 as a gift from his sister, which he used to buy crack at Karlsruhe Central Station in Baden-Württemberg, located in southwest Germany.

At 12:45 p.m., he then proceeded to smoke the drug and allegedly grabbed a child’s shoulder violently.

Wisdom was then ordered out of the area by the police, but he refused to go, according to BildNewpaper.

Police intervened to save the boy, and the Nigerian man bit one of the officers, while three police suffered abrasions during the scuffle.

Then, 13 hours later, the same man wanted to travel without a ticket and got on a night train at 1:50 a.m. When police officers confronted him over his illegal action, the situation quickly escalated.

"The man put up considerable resistance and repeatedly st@bbed the officers from behind with the blade of a cutter knife,” said a police spokeswoman.

One of the officers was stabbed in the head, arm and hand, while another officer was cut on his leg.

Both police officers were treated in the hospital and are unable to work while they recover from their injuries.

Despite attempts to charge the man, the public prosecutor released the Nigerian.

He immediately went back to riding the train without purchasing a ticket, and on Saturday at 7 a.m., a police spokeswoman described how he once again attacked a federal police officer when he was stopped.

The police said during the police check, the Nigerian suddenly attacked a federal police officer, grabbing him by the arm.

“The suspect was brought to the ground and temporarily arrested,” the officer said.

The man was simply released by a public prosecutor even after the officers applied for an arrest warrant twice. Both requests were rejected for unknown reasons.

Four days later, Wisdom O. was arrested in Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia based on an arrest warrant.

In court, Wisdom O. said: “I have not committed any crimes.”

He also claimed he was only trying to clean his fingernails with a knife on the train.

When asked how the officers were cut, he told the court: “Maybe that happened when they tried to take the blade away from me."
