PoliticsNigeria Listed Among Countries To See Worsening Hunger – Report by KEVIND(op): 6:41pm On Oct 20, 2023
Nigeria is among the nine countries expected to see its hunger levels worsening throughout the year, according to the latest Global Hunger Index (GHI).

Apart from Africa’s biggest economy, the Index, a tool for comprehensively measuring and tracking hunger at global, regional, and national levels highlighted Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Yemen, Burkina Faso and Mali as the other countries.

“Many countries are experiencing severe hunger in 2023, with the situation expected to worsen throughout the year. Though circumstances in 2023 are not yet captured by the data in this year’s GHI scores, early warning resources indicate that many areas of the world are in crisis,” the index report said.

It said while conflict and climate change are key drivers of these crises, economic downturns are an even more pervasive factor.

“Nigeria ranks 109th out of the 125 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2023 GHI scores. With a score of 28.3 in the Index, Nigeria has a level of hunger that is serious.”

According to the United Nations, food insecurity is the lack of consistent access to food, which diminishes dietary quality, disrupts normal eating patterns, and can have negative consequences for nutrition, health and well-being.

And Nigeria’s food inflation has been accelerating since August 2019 and now at a faster pace since the country floated the naira and removed petrol subsidy amid high malnutrition and hunger levels in Africa’s most populous country.

Food inflation, which constitutes 50 percent of the inflation rate, rose to 30.64 percent in September, the highest in 18 years, from 29.34 percent in August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics

The rise in food inflation on a year-on-year basis was caused by increases in prices of oil and fat, bread and cereals, potatoes, yam and other tubers, fish, fruit, meat, vegetables and milk, cheese, and eggs.

The World Bank, in its recent food security update, listed Nigeria among the countries to face catastrophic levels of food insecurity in 2023.

According to the update released on June 29, acute food insecurity is expected to worsen in Nigeria, where 24.8 million people are projected to be acutely food insecure between June and August 2023, including 1.1 million people in emergency (IPC Phase 4) conditions.

“Hunger and malnutrition are worsening and currently at an alarming rate. Most households now skip meals to survive,” Obi, who is also a lecturer at the Department of Soil Science, University of Uyo, said.

Ayodeji Ebo, managing director/chief business officer at Optimus by Afrinvest Limited, said there are expectations that the pressures on inflation to persist, especially on the food component of the headline index

“While September marks the commencement of the harvest season, the continued closure of the Niger border, insufficient rainfall in July and August, potential flooding warnings across 32 states, including the FCT, and the likely increase in petrol prices will push food inflation higher in the coming months,” he added.

Politics3 Suspected ISIS Members Nabbed With Rifles In Abuja by KEVIND(op): 6:24am On Oct 11, 2023
Three suspected members of the ISIS terrorists group were on Sunday night arrested in the Federal Capital Territory with three AK-47 rifles.

Three suspected members of the ISIS terrorists group were on Sunday night arrested in the Federal Capital Territory with three AK-47 rifles.

City & Crime learnt that one of the suspects, Muhammad Muktar, was the first to be arrested around the Dan-Kogi Motor Park in Zuba town. He led the police to their hideouts in nearby Dakwa town, where his two accomplices were located.

The Sarkin Pada of Zuba, Alhaji Murtala Muhammad, told City & Crime on Monday that the first suspect alighted from a motorcycle around the motor park in Zuba and was planning to board another when someone noticed the AK-47 gun concealed under his cloth.

He said people raised an alarm and the suspect was arrested and taken to the chief’s palace some minutes after 8pm.

He said during the investigation, the suspect said he was a member of the terrorist group and that he came from Doron-Baga town in Borno State to kill someone.

He said, “Thereafter our vigilantes called the police and handed him over to them along with his AK-47 rifle and two magazines that were in his possession.”

“The police later called and told me that two other persons were arrested from Dakwa town with two AK-47 guns in their hideouts.’’

When contacted, spokeswoman of the FCT police command, Josephine Adeh, promised to enquire about the arrest and get back to our reporter but she did not up till the time of filing this report yester night.

....Govt policies destroy world's 2nd weakest currency.
More hardship as Expert predict N1,500/$1 in 1Q 2024.

In a dramatic slump that got the Nigerian masses gasping for breath from choking inflation since June 1, 2023, Nigeria’s currency, the Naira has been made to become the number two weakest currency in the world after its exchange for one dollar rises to as high as N1,000

The Ugandan Shelling ranks number 10 amongst weakest currencies in the world. Ugandan Shelling (UGX) exchanges a whopping UGX 3,741 to one dollar at the time of filing this report.

Uganda, as with Nigeria is an oil, gold and coffee -rich country. The factors responsible for the failure of the UGX and the entire Ugandan economy are similar to those responsible for Nigeria’s naira failure and the near collapse of the country’s economy namely; a record of unstable economic growth, sizeable debt and political unrest.

The American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had been quoted to have said that Uganda faced numerous political and economic challenges that could affect its future stability including explosive population growth, power and infrastructure constraints, corruption, underdeveloped political institutions and human rights abuses.

The case of Uganda is similar to Nigeria’s in every facet. After President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed the contentious fuel subsidy in May 29, 2023, and subsequently devalued the naira, the currency, Naira, has been battling for survival with its exchange rate to dollar rising to over N1,000 for one dollar at the parallel market.

More harm to the Naira is the bitter truth that the dollar has become and remained the underground currency of the Nigerian economy, according to financial experts. These experts have also cautioned the government of Tinubu to work hard to stop the dollarisation of Nigeria and work aggressively on the nation’s exports, as well as arresting the criminality called round tripping.

The devaluation of Naira, apart from having reduced the purchasing power of the average Nigerian, thereby increasing abject poverty in the land, many expert said that Naira would depreciate to lower than N1,500/$1 in first quarter of 2024. In the event of this possible further collapse of the Naira, experts said it would reduce the Nigerian currency lower on the ignominious list of weak currencies in the world. Nigeria’s currency, in the estimation of the financial analysts, would be required to be carried in sacks if they want to buy any valuable items.

As the Naira collapse continues without abating, the brouhaha that has surrounded President Bola Tinubu’s Chicago State University’s certificate scandal is about to bury the Naira as feelers from the international community indicate that potential investors are extremely cautious of coming to Nigeria to do business because many of them are said to be afraid of what would become the end of the certificates forgery scandal.

A financial analyst, Victor Chiazor, who is the Head of Research and Investment at FSL Securities Limited, said, “With regards to the economy at large, economic activity level is expected to remain muted as individuals and businesses continue to struggle with higher cost of living and operations”.

Another analyst said that in the banking sector, the banks that are making FOREX gains as a result of the Naira devaluation will continue making more gain as the Naira continues to devalue, thus bringing uncertainty to the economy.

For Tajudeen Olayinka the CEO of Wyoming Capital and Partners, “So long as we continue to have dollar liquidity challenge, so long we shall continue to see Naira depreciation and assets and liabilities revaluation difficulties among Nigerian businesses”.

Olayinka said it was imperative that the government should work through possible solutions to restore external sector equilibrium and dollar liquidity.

He advised Federal Government to step up its ongoing reforms in order to stabilize the value of the Nigerian currency. He also advised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow exchange rates to converge by removing the well known source of divergence which he said are the 43 items on the list of FOREX restriction. He said the action may restore liquidity to the official FOREX market.

PoliticsAtiku Submits New Evidence Against Tinubu In Supreme Court by KEVIND(op): 8:14am On Oct 07, 2023
In a dramatic turn of events in Nigeria’s political landscape, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, has filed fresh documents before the Supreme Court, levelling accusations of forgery and perjury against the incumbent President, Bola Tinubu.

The crux of this new evidence, submitted by the former vice president, is rooted in the academic records of President Tinubu. These records were obtained from Chicago State University (CSU) and were handed over to Atiku following an order from an Illinois court in the United States of America.

This order mandated the institution release the academic records, which Atiku has been avidly seeking in Nigerian courts to substantiate his claims that Tinubu forged a certificate purportedly obtained from CSU in 1979.

This certificate was submitted to Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in connection with the 2023 presidential election.

An anonymous member of Atiku’s legal team, when interviewed by PUNCH, confirmed that the academic records of President Tinubu had indeed been submitted to the Supreme Court. However, specifics about the content of the filing were not disclosed, underscoring the matter’s sensitivity.

Atiku’s lead counsel at the tribunal, Chris Uche, hinted that the process was in progress, saying, “I am sure they are working on it. I will get back if I have any information on it.”

Paul Ibe, a media consultant to Atiku, also confirmed that the fresh evidence would be filed before the midnight deadline on Friday, aiming to complement the grounds of appeal submitted earlier.

In response to inquiries about the nature of the prayers contained in the fresh evidence, Ibe clarified, “The extra evidence or the new evidence, which has to do with the certificate that Tinubu submitted to INEC, based on the petition, the discovery, and deposition, will help. And that is not the only ground; our initial filing to the Supreme Court was on 35 grounds. The Chicago evidence is just extra evidence in support of the application.”

While members of Atiku’s legal team, Chris Uche and Mike Ozekhome, confirmed the impending filing of new evidence, they declined to reveal its specific contents.

Kalu Kalu, one of the counsels for Atiku, previously asserted during a press conference that President Tinubu had forged the certificate presented to INEC, citing discrepancies in the document’s details. Kalu pointed out that the certificate indicated a female name, suggested attendance at a school that didn’t exist then, and featured a different middle name than the one on Tinubu’s NYSC certificate submitted to INEC.

Responding to these allegations, Tunde Rahman, an aide to President Tinubu, described Atiku’s actions as a politically motivated vendetta driven by an excessive desire for power. Rahman dismissed Atiku’s quest at the Supreme Court as a “wild goose chase,” contending that the former vice president was attempting to rally political and community leaders against Tinubu.

As the legal battle intensifies, it remains to be seen how the Supreme Court will handle this new evidence and whether it will impact the ongoing proceedings. Critics argue that the timing and nature of Atiku’s claims raise questions about their legitimacy, while supporters maintain that these allegations deserve thorough examination. The Nigerian political landscape continues to be entangled in controversy and intrigue as the legal drama unfolds.

This is just point
The Southwest College transcript that Tinubu used to get admitted to Chicago State University belongs to a female. I had questioned the authenticity of the transcript because of the many errors in it, such as the date and social security number. We await what CSU has to say about this.

This reality, though, seems to validate uncorroborated but long-standing whispers from the grapevine that Tinubu, who was allegedly born Lamidi Amoda [Yoruba Muslim domestication of Abdulhamid Ahmed] Sangodele in Osun State’s Iragbiji, stole the identity of a female Bola Adekunle Tinubu to go to America.
