A Hilux car caught fire on Friday, 28th of October 2022 in Abuja beside the Ministry of Justice, frightening employees, passersby, and motorists. The event happened at about 12: 30 pm close to the building. The automobile burnt for several minutes with no sign of any firemen. Despite the efforts of several motorists who pulled out fire extinguishers to aid in putting out the fire, the unfortunate automobile was burned beyond recognition. The burning of the vehicle was seen by other ministry workers from their offices. The US Embassy had already issued a security advisory warning of an increased risk of terrorist strikes in Abuja, which contributed to the panic caused by the incident. However, at the time this report was submitted, there were firefighters and FRSC personnel at the scene. The situation is now back to normal after the vehicle’ s wreckage was removed from the road. Although newsmen have not been able to determine what started the fire, the event resulted in traffic jams along the Federal High Court- Transcorp Hilton Road. The vehicle’ s remains were being removed by a towing vehicle belonging to the FRSC. The US Embassy warned of the increased threat of terrorist attacks on the city on Sunday. The UK government has issued an alertness warning to its citizens, alleging that the attacks are targeting western interests. |

By Steve Oko Many people were, yesterday, injured, some of them critically, as an 18-seater hummer bus crashed in Abia after losing control on the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway. The incident occurred near the Ohiya Mechanic Village around 2:00 in the afternoon. According to an eyewitness account, the bus which loaded at Abia Tower Junction, Umuahia, (less than one kilometre from the scene of the accident), was driving to the commercial city of Aba when a bullion van and the escort vehicle on its convoy, allegedly chased the bus out of the highway. Consequently, the driver lost control as the vehicle skidded off the road and somersaulted into the median of the double-carriage expressway. “The convoy of the bullion van did not even stop but continued moving towards Aba”, one of the bystanders at the scene told Sunday Vanguard. When our Correspondent arrived at the scene, the wreckage of the blue bus with registration number KTU 503 YE, was seen with blood stains on parts of the vehicle and the ground. The driver was said to be unconscious and had been evacuated to the hospital along with other passengers who sustained various degrees of injuries. Some personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps later arrived on the scene to assist in the rescue efforts and to help direct traffic. When contacted, the Sector Commander, FRSC, Abia State, Mr Paul Ugwu said his men had been deployed to the scene to help rescue the situation. The FRSC boss said that the police would be contacted so that a full investigation would be launched on the cause of the crash.

The Force Headquarters says no bomb or any other improvised explosive device was planted in the nation’s federal capital territory (FCT) amid an apprehensive atmosphere over terror alerts. The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) last week said terrorists were planning to attack Abuja this weekend. According to the US, government buildings, schools, markets and shopping malls were possible targets, thereby, ordering the evacuation of its citizens working in the embassies. While the federal government said it is on top of the matter, there are reports being circulated in social media on Saturday that bombs are planted in Abuja environs. The Force spokesperson, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, Saturday, debunked the rumours describing it as “fake news.” Adejobi disclosed this via the verified Twitter page of the Force, adding that it was created to create fear in people. The tweets read: “TERROR THREAT: It is surprising and disheartening to read in the news and on social media that bombs are being planted in every area of the Federal Capital Territory, even from some individuals who are presumed to be peace ambassadors and… “Nigerians at large to disregard this fake news which was purportedly sponsored to create fear in our people and heat up the polity. “We will continue to adopt all effective operational strategies to decimate the activities of non-state actors and other criminal elements in the country.” |
