I should be the one asking you. You came out and openly said that I was misleading people with my definition of waybill. I just went straight to the dictionary and got the reference, now you are acting like I was the one who said you were wrong. You started it all. So my question is, do you consider Oxford wrong? kingIfey: |
Education / 45 English Words Nigerians Mispronounce (video): From a Nigerian Linguist by kingIfey(m): 1:28pm On Jun 28, 2020 |
As a Nigerian who has studied linguistics over the past few years and studied our local languages, I have come to understand the differences between our local languages and the English language. A basic understanding of such differences will help you teach someone to speak the English language appropriately. I also oppose the idea that learning your native language first before the English language will make you speak English poorly. Well, I learnt Igbo first and even began to speak English appropriately in secondary school. People who are bilingual or multilingual have been confirmed to be a lot smarter than kids who are monolingual. This is because this set of people can think in two different cultures. Is English a yard-stick for measuring intelligence? No it is not, but any language can become a yardstick for measuring intelligence if it has been taught to a particular group of people and a test administered. This means that you have been taught the lexical categories and as such, you are expected to be able to use them well enough. If you don't use them well enough, wouldn't one think that you are not bright enough? In essence, languages taught in school can be used as a yard-stick for measuring intelligence especially when the language is not the person's native language. In learning any language, one needs to understand that the segments of the language are important, syllabification is important, the prosodic features are important, and the grammar is also important. I have noticed that many Nigerians are more interested in using the correct grammar and less interested in using the correct pronunciations of words. Many Nigerians feel the English we speak is so clear that everyone around the world understand us. Well, when you leave this country, you will realise that your English still confuses a lot of persons. I have trained a lot of Nigerians in the diaspora, and they have confessed that they really had no idea that they could be misunderstood to that extent ( where someone wonders whether you mean cook or kook, pull or pool, cat or cart,, burned or bond, hit or heat, cannery or canary). If you are learning any language, the phonology of that language is vital; you just need to learn it as well. Imagine someone learning Igbo, and the person has not mastered the different tones in the Igbo language, he wouldn't be able to differentiate between the four meanings of AKWA ( egg, cry, bed, and clothes) and the two meanings of AMU ( laughter and penis). Imagine the blunder such a non-native Igbo speaker will be making. As a professional in what you do, you need clarity of speech. If you have been looking for ways to reduce your mispronunciations of words, just watch this video on Youtube and thank me later. You can contact me as well if you need online training. Nbote: These definitions didn't say anything different and they didn't disprove your assertion that manifest and Waybill are not the same, rather they lend credence to my assertion. You might have a problem understanding that a list is also a document. A document or list become a receipt once it has been received andby due confirmation has been made. Education / Is It Called Waybill Or A Manifest? Can Waybill Be Used As A Verb To Mean SEND? by kingIfey(m): 5:50pm On Mar 23, 2019 |
What is a waybill? A waybill is a list that contains names of people and goods to be conveyed from one location to another. It is that book where you write your name before entering a bus. There is an air waybill, sea waybill etc. Waybill cannot be verbalised. I want to waybill some goods to you❌ If you are looking for a verb to replace 'waybill', here are two genuinely accepted words to use. 1. Freight (verb) transport (goods) in bulk by truck, train, ship, or aircraft. "the metals have been freighted from the city". We freighted the cargo down to Port Harcourt. freight is used when goods are quite bulky. When goods are less bulky, for example, conveying clothes from Lagos to Enugu, or maybe you bought a phone from online stores, they don't waybill it, rather they dispatch it or courier it Dispatch: dɪˈspatʃ/ verb 1. send off to a destination or for a purpose. In stead of saying, Please waybill those materials to me❌ Dispatch the materials to me.✔ Courier the materials to me✔ Waybill is not exactly what you think it is. Waybill and manifest are basically the same I hope you learnt something new today . I am King Ifey and I love to see you prosper @King_ifey(Twitter and IG) @King Ifey (Facebook) Kingifey.com 1 Like |

Let's get down to brass tacks people. 1. You don't write exams except you are the examiner. The person being examined, sits for an exam or takes an exam. It is wrong to say 'I wrote WASSCE in 2004' ❌ 'I sat (for) waec in 2004' ✔ 'I took WASSCE in 2004'✔ 'sit for' is used in Britain while 'take' is used in the US. Education / Wrong Expression: Is It A Standard Bearer Or A Flag Bearer? by kingIfey(m): 8:59pm On Feb 22, 2019 |
##ComeToClassWithKingIfey #PoliticsAndErrors Is it flag Bearer or standard bearer? We all know that a standard actually means a flag, but then, why is it wrong for someone to use the word 'flag-bearer' to refer to the leader of a political party? Let's get down to brass tacks Who is a flag bearer? one who carries a flag, especially at a ceremony Synonyms: flag carrier, standard-bearer Meaning 2: One who openly promotes an idea or value and becomes symbolic for it. E.g These ladies are flag bearers for feminism. Who is a standardbearer? A person who carries a flag or banner (a standard). E.g The standard-bearer in battle is in the center of the front line so the following troops know where to go; unfortunately, it also shows the enemy where to shoot. (figuratively) A standard bearer is a person who visibly leads. E.g He became the standard-bearer for their cause because of his celebrity. In as much as standard bearer and flagbearer mean a flag carrier in one context, it is only standard bearer that is the expression used to figuratively denote the leader of a group, organisation or a party. Politics / Wrong Expression:election Or Electoral Tribunal? Which One Is The Standard ? by kingIfey(m): 1:04pm On Feb 22, 2019 |
#ComeToClassWithKingIfey Just as governorship election is wrong , election tribunal is also wrong. Election tribunal ❌ Electoral tribunal ✔ Let's take a look at attributive nouns. Not all nouns can play attributive roles. Women organisation ✔ Media talk ✔ Birthday party ✔ House party ✔ These are correct expressions . Do you ever use any of these nouns as attributive noun? Derogation term❌ Preparation hour❌ Contradiction stance❌ Investigation journalism❌ Exposition essay❌ Satisfaction remarks❌ Condemnation act❌ Placation letter.❌ Vehicle movement❌ I am not sure I have heard anybody use these expressions because they have their adjectival equivalence Derogatory term✔ Preparatory hour ✔ Contradictory stance ✔ Investigative journalism✔ Expository essay✔ Satisfactory remarks ✔ Condemnatory act ✔ Placatory letter✔ Vehicular movement ✔ So it is actually weird for some nouns to play attributive roles. If you follow English and American politics, you would realise you have not heard election tribunal, election candidate, governorship candidate and governorship election. What you will see are electoral tribunal, electoral candidate, gubernatorial candidate and gubernatorial election. I am King Ifey and I love to see you prosper. #ComeToClassWithKingIfey Governorship election❌ Governorship polls ❌ Governorship candidate❌ These expressions are used basically by Nigerians dailies but they are not the standard expressions to be used. What does Governorship mean? GOVERNORSHIP (noun) The office or position of being governor of a town, region, or public institution. ‘the governorship of the bank’ ‘Almost immediately after winning the governorship, he had begun to maneuver for a seat in the U.S. Senate.’ ‘By the early 1990s, the Texas governorship was again in the hands of a Democrat.’ ‘The party has already lost the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia.’ ‘The party has already lost the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia in the first major post-Obama votes.’ 2. The period of incumbency of a governor Example: He did a lot of work during his governorship. Let's find out what Gubernatorial means GUBERNATORIAL (adjective) Relating to a governor, particularly that of a state in the US. Examples ‘a gubernatorial election’ ‘Virginia is one of only two states with gubernatorial races this election year.’ ‘Her brother Mitch is lieutenant governor and a future gubernatorial prospect.’ ‘They are still finding uncounted ballots in Washington state from last fall's gubernatorial election.’ ‘According to the bill, the province is allowed to arrange direct gubernatorial elections, whenever it is ready.’ ‘We're excited about your son's hopeful gubernatorial election this year.’ ‘The gubernatorial election is still not over in Washington state.’ ‘The new organization demanded wider public participation and transparency during the next gubernatorial election.’ ‘The Californian gubernatorial election had just got under way and everyone and their brother-in-law seemed to be running.’ ‘I hope the administration is serious in this effort, and not just making empty promises ahead of the gubernatorial election.’ ‘After the attorney helped a gubernatorial candidate win an election, he became the governors counsel.’ ‘Between now and next year, 38 states and two territories will hold gubernatorial elections.’ These examples and definitions were got from Oxford dictionary You will agree with me that the best fit is the adjectival word 'gubernatorial' and not 'governorship' In most cases, you will never find the aforementioned expressions in British and Ameiecan dailies. When you google 'governorship election', you are most likely to be on the Nigerian internet space Gubernatorial election ✔ Gubernatorial candidate✔ Gubernatorial polls✔ Etc. She is pregnant for me ❌ My classmate is pregnant for her dad's driver❌ Why are those sentences wrong? Pregnant can go with a few prepositions, for example: pregnant for, pregnant by and pregnant with. Pregnant for: this goes with a period of time.e.g she was pregnant for three months before she began taking the drugs. Pregnant by : this is used with somebody, usually the person who got someone pregnant. She is pregnant by me ✔ My classmate is pregnant by her dad's driver✔ Finally , pregnant with is easy to understand. She is pregnant with a child.✔ Native speakers in Australia still say 'pregnant to someone'. When you are pregnant to someone , that person is responsible for it. People hardly use 'pregnant with a child' because once you say 'she is pregnant', you wouldn't expect any other thing other than a child. A human can't be pregnant with puppies . You can say, 'when my mum was pregnant with me, she ate a lot of bat pepper soup' , maybe that's why I'm hairy Alright, I hope you understood the post. Share this with someone. So you can ask Whom are you pregnant by?✔ Not Who are you pregnant for?❌ The class is done and dusted Www.kingifey.com I am your resident linguist and I love to see you prosper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6g_Z69eeyk ##ComeToClassWithKingIfey 1 Like |

Education / IELTS FOR NIGERIANS : Does 'sleep Off' Really Mean ' To Fall Asleep'? by kingIfey(m): 10:58pm On Feb 13, 2019 |
He has slept off.❌ My dad has slept off❌ Why are these two expressions wrong? They are wrong because the phrasal verb 'sleep off' is transitive , but it has been used as an intransitive verb. A transitive verb always require an object. When somebody sleeps off, one need to ask....what exactly did he sleep off? Sleep off is a transitive verb which means to sleep until you do not feel I'll anymore , respect after drinking too much alcohol. E.g. He needs to sleep off the effect of last night's party. You can actually say My dad has gone to sleep✔ My dad has fallen asleep✔ My dad has drifted off to sleep✔ If you want to imply that somebody fell asleep without intending to, you could say they nodded off. 'Nod off' is an intransitive phrases verb which means 'to begin to sleep when you do not intend to. E.g. The young man nodded off while we were still seeing the horror film. Honestly, there are a lot of errors in our spoken English, some of these errors can mar your write-up. Those who are gonna sit IELTS pleas do take note. This is one of the reasons a lot of people will advice that you reduce the use of phrases verbs and idioms when sitting IELTS. You might not know when something you said could be interpreted differently or be viewed as incomplete or inadequate just like the verb 'sleep off' in the sentence 'my dad has slept off'. Culture / Why Criticise Rachel Dolezal Who Turned Black With New Name Nkechi. A. Diallo by kingIfey(m): 2:37pm On Mar 02, 2017 |
WHY CRITICISE THE WHITE LADY, RACHEL, WHO TURNED BLACK AND CHANGED HER NAME TO NKECHI AMARE DIALLO? The writer that wrote against the white lady that changed her name from Rachel to Nkechi has serious issues. Of all things to write about which were obviously listed as pressing issues in his article, he chose this inconsequential thing to scream his voice hoarse on? He try ooo. Jisi ike. There are over 50 millions Nigerians with English Names and well over 130 million Nigerians with foreign names. Yes...Moslems and Christians. We have westernized our names. The westerners aren't getting livid about it at all or are they? The southern Nigerians are so white that it hurts. Both their name and surname are usually English. You lose your African identity with such names. Kate Henshaw, Rita Dominic, Van Vicker, Steve Crown, Israel Strong, and many celebrities out there bear English names. We are yet to have them censured for bearing such names. Now, One white lady decides that she is in fact the opposite of a typical oreo, we jump in on the matter, grabbing our sabres and cudgels to close in on her. Utter rubbish! Many Nigerians have left this country for Britain, Australia, America and Canada. They go there and have themselves whitened up. They become citizens there and decide not to come home. Biko has any white man banged his head against a brick wall because of it? This is absolutely not a big issue...no one is going to die if Queen Elizabeth decides tomorrow that she is from Aguluzigbo in Anaocha local government area of Anambra State. Nobody has died since black people have been surgically whitening themselves up in Los Angeles. Michael Jackson had himself surgically transformed to an ALMOST white lady, with epicene elegance and very androgynous look, people loved it. Chiwetalu Ejiofor's sister changed her name to Zain Asher. Abandoned the whole Igbo clan and opted for a very white name... Mister writer...have you written anything to criticise her(Zain Asher)? Name is Name biko. Some Igbo people I know have picked up Yoruba names too. Good for them. If anybody decides that he is done being black and wants to be white...good for them. If you are done being Caucasian and want to be negro ....good for you. If you are done being a Mongoloid and want to be a Caucasian, please and please happily become one if it makes you happy. In this contemporary world where people choose what they want to be. Turning From male to female, From female to male, From man to devil-lookalike, From yourself to a celebrity you admire. If all these are obtainable, why is this 'Rachel turned Nkechi' getting savagely censured? I am not understanding....aghotasiro m this thing. http://kingifey..com.ng/2017/03/why-criticise-white-lady-rachel-who.html?m=1

Poems For Review / I Rest Now (to The Mother I Never Had) By King Ifey Muonyili by kingIfey(m): 4:36pm On Mar 01, 2017 |
I REST NOW (TO THE MOTHER I NEVER HAD) BY KING IFEY MUONYILI I rest now I rest amidst the clouds With the daughters and sons of the wind Free to reach for the moon, Free to stare into the sun. Freedom unimaginable When being mortal felt like a cage, When mother had me and clothed me in dirt, Hoping opulence catches up with me And gives me the life she can’t give. When I ended up amidst the pack of poor lasses Catered for by vile nuns, When food was a luxury I couldn’t afford, When hard work made my soft hands tremble in pain. Mother, I know u did what u did Because father rejected you You couldn’t feed yourself, and you had me to feed. I know you cry every day that you did me wrong You wonder if I attend school with the rich Or I pick food from the gutter You curse my father and your life Rest now mother, rest now The nun who clothed me, starved me I looked gaunt and yellow I rebelled and left through a conduit that let water off the abbey I lived in the street and ate from the waste. I slept in empty stores and sometimes in the bush My heart began to fail me Help was out of sight I shut my eyes to the world, laid my head on a slab of rock, Breathed my last and gave it up in peace Now I rest I rest amidst the clouds With no holds barred Jumping from east to west, north and south I was never a child on earth, I was my own lady Now, I have all you wished that I should have. Peace of mind, ease and a cloud of roses Now I feel like a child Don’t cry I still love you I love you because you gave me life I rest now I rest above cloud nines By King Ifey Muonyili 3 Likes |
Poems For Review / I Have A Friend By King Ifey by kingIfey(m): 2:53pm On Dec 27, 2016 |
Word! You really think You have a friend? You bare your heart And soul to him And you tell him Everything about your life In the hope that he Keeps it safe for you. Later, word gets out And you question Your smartness. How stupid it was For you to have trusted. You call yourself a friend And yet you are An ocean away from me. We wine and dine And I look at you With all the trust in my heart. Little did I know You Harbour huge Reservations about me. Believe me Every day we learn. You are not stupid Because you beheld Such drama in your life We are all going through The same school called life. We learn in it together And we become wiser. We keep getting wiser Till we are reduced to dust. Don't stop learning. http://kingifey..com.ng/2016/12/i-have-friend.html?m=1 2 Likes |
