Foreign Affairs / Trump Law Firm Withdraws From Pennsylvania Case Challenging Election by kingsoncj: 9:06am On Nov 14, 2020
A major law firm withdrew overnight from a Trump campaign case in Pennsylvania seeking to have mail-in ballots thrown out, in the latest blow to the president’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election result in court.

The Ohio-based Porter Wright Morris & Arthur firm, which brought a suit on Monday alleging that the use of mail-in ballots had created “an illegal two-tiered voting system” in the state, abruptly withdrew from that case in a memo to the court.
“Plaintiffs and Porter Wright have reached a mutual agreement that plaintiffs will be best served if Porter Wright withdraws,” the memo said. The lead lawyer in the case, the Pittsburgh-based Ronald L Hicks Jr, did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The news was first reported by the New York Times.

Separately, lawyers for the Trump campaign withdrew a lawsuit in Arizona, conceding that the case would not move enough votes to change the election result in the state. “Since the close of yesterday’s hearing, the tabulation of votes statewide has rendered unnecessary a judicial ruling as to the presidential electors,” Trump lawyer Kory Langhofer told an Arizona state court, in news first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

And in Michigan, a judge refused to halt the certification of Detroit-area election results. It was the third time a judge has declined to intervene in the Michigan count.

Unlike most lawsuits brought by the Trump campaign, which targeted small pools of votes whose exclusion would not change the election result, the Porter Wright suit in Pennsylvania challenged nearly 2.65m votes that were cast by mail, the majority by Democrats.
It accused the secretary of the commonwealth, Kathy Boockvar, of “arbitrary and illegal actions” and sought an emergency order prohibiting the certification of the Pennsylvania election result.

With that lawsuit stalled, certification in Pennsylvania – and the formal election of Joe Biden as president – drew a step closer. By law the state’s result must be certified by 23 November.

The news came as a coalition of US federal and state officials said they had no evidence that votes were compromised or altered in last week’s presidential election, rejecting unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud advanced by Trump and many of his supporters.

The statement from cybersecurity experts trumpeted the 3 November election as the most secure in American history.

Crime / Police Arrest 25 Kenyan Teenagers For Shooting Pornography by kingsoncj: 11:44am On Jul 22, 2020
Police of Kenya’s Kakamega County are reported to have arrested the youngsters in the act of shooting the video alongside a man identified as Caleb who is believed to be their leader.

According to an eyewitness, they were arrested on Monday, July 20 in a rented apartment in Maraba Estate in the evening while shooting the Pornographic videos.

“I was doing my garbage collecting business, which is when I noticed something strange, there were so many condoms wrapped in a poly bad and I also heard some noise from the house.

“When I walked into the house, I got shocked, the girls were in the act and there was a man shooting.

“I went to tip the police and they immediately drove to the scene where the suspects are reported to have been having both raw sex and protected sex,” the witness is quoted as saying.

OCPD of Kakamega Central David Kabena who is reported to have confirmed the arrest said his outfit acted swiftly based on a tipoff and nabbed the teenagers setting up the cameras for the shooting.

“All these are minors and we found them during the act and arrested them. We will deal with the man (Caleb) for he is the one misleading them into this act,” the police boss said.

Crime / Mexican Drug Cartel Shows Off Uniformed Troops With Military Weapons And Armoure by kingsoncj: 5:21pm On Jul 19, 2020
Mexico’s top security official has said authorities are investigating a video which showed dozens of uniformed troops with military-grade weapons and armoured pickup trucks apparently connected to a major drug cartel.

The video, which circulated on social media on Friday, appeared to be a show of power by members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) - one of Mexico's most powerful criminal groups.
Alfonso Durazo, secretary of security and civilian protection, said the “propaganda video” was being analysed to confirm its authenticity.
He added that “there is no criminal group with the capacity to successfully challenge the federal security forces”. Many of the vehicles parked on a dirt road in the video have improvised gun turrets or plate-steel armour welded onto them.
The release of the video coincided with a visit by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico’s president, to the group’s heartland. Mr Lopez Obrador has favoured a less confrontational approach to security than his predecessors and supported measures to address social issues, such as poverty and unemployment, which he has argued contribute to crime.
The so-called “hugs, not bullets” strategy has been controversial and some security analysts have warned it has emboldened criminal groups.
“They are sending a clear message... that they basically rule Mexico, not Lopez Obrador,” Mike Vigil, a former chief of international operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, told Reuters.Mr Vigil warned the president’s approach had “only led these cartels to operate with more impunity”.
Falko Ernst, a senior analyst on Mexico for the International Crisis Group, said the video sent a clear warning over potential retaliation against the government by the cartel.

Romance / Molo Woman Chops Off Her Husband's Private Parts In Nakuru by kingsoncj: 8:50pm On Jun 24, 2020
A man nearly lost his genitals after his wife cut part of his manhood following a domestic row at Molo, Nakuru County. Police have arrested the woman who went into hiding after the Saturday evening incident.

"The victim was rushed to Nakuru Level Five Hospital for treatment," said a police officer who did not wish to be quoted.

Police said the victim also suffered deep cuts on his head.
Neighbours said they heard commotion in the couple’s house and responded to the man’s distress calls only to find him lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

"We immediately rushed him to hospital where he is recuperating," said one of the neighbours.

Doctors at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital said the victim was out of danger as he is responding well to treatment.

"He suffered deep cuts on his private parts and head which we have stitched," said a medic at the hospital.

Technology Market / Why Google Chrome Users Could Pocket A £4,000 Payout: Do YOU Meet The Criteria? by kingsoncj: 8:19pm On Jun 11, 2020
Have you ever used Google Chrome's built-in Incognito Mode to secretly browse on the internet away from prying eyes? If so, you could soon be entitled to a £4,000 ($5,000) windfall from Google. Why? Well, it's all thanks to a $5 billion (£4 billion) class-action lawsuit, which has been filed by lawyers who have accused Google of illegally gathering information during users' private Incognito Mode browsing sessions.Since this is a class-action lawsuit, anyone who meets the criteria could be eligible to share in the $5 billion payout – provided the lawyers are successful, of course. To be eligible, you'll need to have used Incognito Mode since June 1, 2016. The complaint, which has been filed to the US District Court for the Northern District of California by a partner at the Boies Schiller Flexner law firm, states that it has taken action because of "Google's unlawful and intentional interception and collection" of confidential communications without users' consent.

This took place, the complaint continues, "even when those individuals expressly follow Google’s recommendations to prevent the tracking or collection of their personal information and communications." Whenever you launch a new Incognito window in Google Chrome, the software displays a message that this mode is designed to allow you to "browse privately". It says other people who use the device will not be able to access your browsing history.

Sports / Liverpool Loanee Ejaria Switches From England To Nigeria's Super Eagles by kingsoncj: 8:22pm On May 09, 2020
The 22-year-old midfielder is ready to play for the three-time African champions after playing for England's youth teams in the last few years.
On-loan Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria has switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria.

Ejaria was born to Nigerian parents in London and went on to develop his game in the Arsenal academy for nine years before joining Liverpool as a 16-year-old.

The midfielder previously trained with the Nigeria U17 team in 2013 before making his debut appearance for the England U20 side in October 2016.
He was part of the Young Lions' set-up that won the 2017 Fifa U20 World Cup in South Korea, and he later proceeded to the U21 team in 2018.
"He has dumped England for Nigeria but the paperwork is still ongoing with Fifa," a top NFF official told Goal.

The 22-year-old is believed to have submitted relevant paperwork to Fifa to confirm the change of his nationality, and he plans to renew his Nigerian passport.

He left Liverpool in January 2019 to join Championship side Reading on an initial six-month loan before extending his stay for the entire 2019-20 campaign with the option of a permanent move.

The midfielder played prominently for Liverpool's U23 side before his loan move. He managed just two appearances for the Reds in the Premier League and also played three games each in the League Cup and FA Cup in the 2016-17 season.

Ejaria was a regular fixture at Reading this season, making 32 appearances with three goals and four assists to his name in the Championship.

Last December, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr denied comparing Ejaria with QPR playmaker Eberechi Eze who is also being courted by the three-time African champions.
"My attention has been drawn to some statements online that I have described Reading FC player Ovie Ejaria as a better player than Queens Park Rangers' Ebere Eze and so the NFF should get him in the team immediately," he said.

"This is totally false and very disrespectful to both players. I never compare players and I have not asked the NFF to make any approach for the player in question.

"I will never ask the NFF publicly to approach any player for our team. We have our processes and it certainly doesn’t include sharing such information publicly."

Health / Germany Calls On Migrant Medics To Help Tackle Coronavirus by kingsoncj: 1:49pm On Apr 14, 2020
Germany’s health authorities are appealing to medically qualified migrants to help them tackle the coronavirus.

As increasing numbers of doctors and nurses fall ill or are quarantined, the shortage of medical staff is putting pressure on a usually well-resourced health service.

Government initiatives have already increased the number of intensive care beds from about 24,000 to 40,000, most of them with ventilators. Staff are being retrained and non-essential operations across the country have been cancelled.

But the health system still needs more medical personnel to care for patients, increase the levels of testing, and track down people who have been in contact with those who are sick. The Robert Koch Institute, which advises the government on public health, has said 2,300 doctors are believed to be off sick or in quarantine. But with no central collation of data, the real figure is believed to be much higher. In the state of Bavaria alone, 244 doctors’ practices have had to close because of coronavirus infections.

Match4Healthcare, a website backed by medical authorities which was created by a volunteer team of students and hackers, seeks to match healthcare workers and volunteers – both citizens and foreigners living in Germany – to clinics and care homes needing support.

The eastern state of Saxony is at the forefront of a campaign calling on foreign doctors, including the thousands of refugees who arrived in 2015, to help. According to the Facebook group Syrian Doctors in Germany there are 14,000 Syrian doctors waiting for their qualifications to be approved.

“We are keen for anyone to get in touch who is in a position to help,” said a spokesman for the medical association in Leipzig (SLAEK), the capital of Saxony. “It could be someone who does not yet have their medical licence, but is on their way to getting it,” he said. “To date around 400 have been in touch.”
axony, with a population of just over 4 million, has not been as badly hit by the virus as other regions, but concern is growing. By Friday, there were almost 4,000 confirmed cases and 76 of them had died. “Right now the situation is still under control, but as it gets worse we need to prepare for that,” the spokesman said.

In its Facebook appeal the medical association calls on German-speaking “foreign doctors already living in Saxony but who have not yet got their medical licence to help with coronavirus support”.
What makes Saxony’s plea salient is that it is the home of Pegida, the anti-Islam protest movement, and the heartland of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party. The AfD rose to prominence – becoming the largest opposition in parliament in 2017 – on the back of voter anger over Angela Merkel’s decision to allow almost 1 million refugees into the country in 2015.

The chancellor’s resistance to closing Germany’s borders prompted a huge backlash against her Christian Democrats’ refugee policy, with many accusing Merkel of undermining national security. Now, although the government was initially reluctant to do so, closing the national border to most neighbouring countries is regarded as a matter of national safety, to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Opponents of the government’s open door policy argued refugees would be a drain on the economy and compromise national security. Those in favour said that, as the majority were young, they would help plug a growing skills shortage caused by an ageing population.

Safwan Adnan Ali arrived from Syria in July 2016. He studied general surgery in Latakia for four years, then moved to Iraq to avoid military service, where he worked as a general practitioner for a year.
Since arriving in Germany as a refugee, he has been learning the language and preparing for exams which will allow his qualifications to be recognised.
“I was waiting for the exam for medical language use, but then the coronavirus came and everything has ground to a halt,” the 37-year-old said. “When the appeal was announced … I thought I’d really like to help. I need to do something useful, and I’d like to give something back to the country which has helped me so much, so I sent off my CV immediately.”

He has also applied to help Bavaria, one of the worst-hit regions, which recently announced that doctors without medical licences would be given immediate permission to work there for a year. In recent days other states have announced easier access to exam procedures and a relaxation on qualification rules.

Adnan Ali said: “I’m prepared to go anywhere I’m needed. Although as I have my wife and one-year-old daughter in Saxony, I’d prefer to work here close to them if I can.”

His WhatsApp group of Syrian doctors living in Germany has been debating whether access to the medical system due to the pandemic will shorten their wait to enter the profession.

“I really hope this will make it easier by maybe cutting down some of the unwieldy bureaucratic procedures,” he said.

Ahmad Dahhan, 35, said when he arrived in Germany from Syria in December 2015 he hoped to be able to resume his medical career as soon as possible. “Everyone has their dreams,” he said, “but bureaucracy has made things very difficult and slow, and it has been an extremely frustrating time.”
Dahhan studied biochemistry at the University of Aleppo before training as a gynaecologist at Damascus University. “They say they are in need of doctors, even when there isn’t a health crisis, but it’s not at all straightforward to get into the profession.”

He has studied German, spent two months working alongside doctors at a gynaecology department in Leipzig, and attended courses of advanced training for foreign doctors, but since the coronavirus struck, he has been confined to his apartment.

“It is extremely discouraging to know that I could be doing something far more useful,” he said. “So I welcome the opportunity to be able to do so and hope that will help Germany recognise we can also be helpful even when there is not a crisis on.”

Romance / Mayor Calls Off Wedding Hours After Announcing It Due To Phone Call From Woman by kingsoncj: 7:59am On Mar 07, 2020
Sarah Carter, an Australian mayor, happily posted about her engagement to boyfriend of eight months Aaron Lipson – but a phone call from a woman made her cancel

An Aussie mayor who called off her wedding mere hours after confirming her engagement has revealed the heartbreaking reason why.

Sarah Carter, mayor of Maribyrnong in Melbourne, announced that she was engaged to marry partner Aaron Lipson at the weekend.

The mayor posted that she was happily planning to marry the advertising director on Facebook.

After dating for eight months Aaron proposed to the gorgeous mayor.

She wrote online: “On Saturday the most amazing man I’ve ever chanced upon got down on one knee and proposed.

“I, of course, rushed to say ‘yes’ and just like that, we’re engaged to be married.”

She added that she felt like the “luckiest woman in all the world” and couldn’t wait to be her partner’s wife.

Unfortunately, just a couple of hours later she updated the Facebook account to say that the big day had been cancelled.

Sarah claimed that some devastating information from an unnamed woman was behind the shock split.

In the updated post, she said: “Obviously the wedding is off.

“Be careful ladies and thank you to the woman for telling me, best to know now.”

Sarah added: “I’m obviously terribly embarrassed.”

Just a few short months earlier the couple spent a romantic trip watching the Northern Lights in Iceland.

Now, Sarah has spoken to news.com.au about what happens next.

She said: “As you can imagine, it’s been a really rough week and I’m just trying to get through it.”

Aaron denied to comment on the events and said that it was a “private matter”
