The English speaking side was governed along side Nigeria while the French side was independent from start.

By international law they should be allowed to have another referendum after 50 years but obviously the French Cameroonians would not want the region laying the golden egg to go like that. What I would suggest is either the French Cameroonians go back to the deal that made them a unified state or they hold a second referendum that would force the French Cameroonians to go back to federalism and giving them their derivatives. Otherwise they opt out.

Can you imagine Nigeria becoming a full Unitary State and no derivation for oil producing states thereby turning those ss states into a village while d money is used to develop the North. We would not have a country.

The English speaking areas should take up the matter to the international court of Arbitration.

I know some South Westerners would also want to throw their hats in the ring but any reasonable person would tell them to channel that energy towards entrepreneurship and empowerment for their people.

No they had a referendum. In the 1950’s all those English speaking areas were part of the Eastern Region in Nigeria. They had representatives in the Eastern house of Assembly. But the fear of the dominance of the Igbo made them sign up with French Cameroon thinking they would have a leverage in Cameroon than in Nigeria. The French Cameroonians promise them federalism. But by 1971 they abolish Federalism for Unitarianism hence their problems today.

If they could have waited till 1966 when states where created out of the eastern region they would have their states and today they would have be benefiting from the 13% derivatives giving to oil producing states. Unfortunately all money made from oil as they are now a Unitary country goes to the central government who spends most of that funds in the French areas to the detriment of the English Speaking areas.

They have themselves to blame.

Just watch a video on Bamenda and most of the English speaking areas the level of development compared to their compatriots in Nigeria in states like Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River those areas in Cameroon looks like villages. No decent roads yet this area of Cameroon produce the most oil in the country.

I think they made a mistake in that referendum of 1960.
