Lawyers in the House . In Yoruba Custom and Traditions. Idi-Igi Sharing and Ori Ojori method of Property sharing are used. Idi Igi is an old method while Ori Ojori is Modern. Idi Igi Means sharing of properties according to the number of wives While Ori Ojori means sharing of properties according to the number of children . However,I want to ask Lawyers in the House ,HOW ABOUT A SITUATION LIKE THIS . A MAN DIED THAT DIED AND THE TWO WOMEN WHO HAD CHILDREN FOR HIM ALREADY LEFT HIM MANY YEARS AGO . MEANING HE DIED WITHOUT ANY WIFE WITH HIM . HE DIED AS A SINGLE FATHER . WILL THE PROPERTY OF SUCH MAN STILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF WIVES OF CHILDREN. Our Forefathers that Practised all these started it because they Believed that is the way it should be done ,I do not think in this Generations such Practice should be made Compulsory on us . In Yoruba Land Culture ,Why are some Cultures and Traditions Cancels or rather not been practised again but some still kept . Some were Not Practises again because of the Dangers ,Humiliations ,Sorrows and inhumane Realities attached to it. Abobaku : In Yoruba Land When a King Dies in the Olden Days ,Someone called Abobaku ( Someone who dies with the King ) Would be buried with the King . At the news of a King in this Present Generation ,Any Abobaku Would take to his Heels and run . Even such is not been Practised any more .. Supo : Secondly When a Man Dies ,the Immediate brother of the Deceased would be made to Marry the wife of the Deceased. Such Customs and Traditions is mostly not been Practised in Yoruba Land Anymore ..Many Women consider it so Weird. There are So Many other Customs and Traditions Practised that have been Abolished because of their Nature . Crowning of Kings : In Yoruba Land When a King goes to meet His Ancestors (Oba Waja) ,I understand that the Departed King Body Parts would be Cooked for New King to eat then the Kind Maker would ask him ,what did you eat ,He replies in Affirmative.. I have just eating King ( Mo Je Oba ) In another one ,I understand that the Skull of the Departed King Would be Removed and be made as a cup for the New King to Drink Water etc . In Some Communities Many Obas of today do not go into such Fetish.. ORO Festival : In Some Communities, Before a New King is Installed an ORO Festival would be done where An earlier Announcement is made that people should stay indoors ,anyone found outside would be Taken ,Killed and offer for Sacrifice during the New King Installation. This also are not being practiced in some Communities . When it comes to Property Sharing IDI IGI Method of property Sharing is a way of sharing property According to the Number of wives a Man Marries . A Man that Married Two Wives for Example ,If the first Wife had just one 4 Children and Second Wife has just one Child ,if the Husband has 6 houses for example ,The 6 houses would be shared equally first Wife 4 Children takes 3 Houses ,Second wife One Child takes 3 Houses . Yet we were made to Understand that Wife does not inherit there husband Properties but the Children. Under Fairness ,Equity and Justice . In My Own Opinion ,I do not think our Fore father's Practised which is still adopted in Nigerian Customary Court is Right. I think The Present Generation Law Practicing should Change this. Most Women that has the Least Children always Bring up this ,There are many Families that have lost people because of this method of Property Sharing . I do not think Property Sharing should be done by numbers of Wife but Numbers of Children ..Properties are for Children why then Dividing it alongside of wives numbers . There would Rivalry,Discord ,Discontentment, Fury ,Spiritual Attacks ,Death Records etc among such Family . The ORI OJORI Method in my own Opinion should be the Order of today's Property Sharing . I just witnessed a Case of a family that the Idi IGI Method Sharing properties by number of wives in one family in my Area ,The war among Children of the woman with larger numbers and the one with just two Children have become Bloody . An Elder in the Area Suggested that they could have divided the Property into three Equal part give the woman with Two Children one part and the one with many Children the remaining two parts ..that will be better . Law is made by Man ,Law Never Made Man . Law should be fair ,Has Spirit of Equity and Justice Lawyers in the House what is your Opinion ?/ |

A Family Whose Father is Dead . There Father Suffered Long Term Sickness, Eldest Son Single handedly took care of the Father ,The Man had 4 Children, 3 from First Woman ,One ( A Girl ) from Second Woman . Both Women had Left the Man for Several Years . Before The Man Died ,The Second Woman made Several Efforts to Convince the man to sell off his one Property and Go back to the Village Eldest Son always Kick against that ,Stating If he does What would the Children Inherit ... Second Wife Issued Lots of Threats to the Man but Eldest Son Refused . The man Became so so sick ,Second Woman was Visiting,Persuading that The Man should sell His Property so he can take care of his health then Move back to the Village . Eldest Son Rejected the Idea again stating he would Rather he sold His Own Property to treats His Father ,So His Father Property can be preserved and the Children at least would have have something to fall back to .the other Two Brothers from same first Woman were not Coming to take care of the Man , The Girl from the Second Woman was not Available as well. The Proceeds the Eldest Son Got from the sale of His Own Property was Enough to take care His Father's Health but Death Took Father Away. Before Father Died ,He handled over to Eldest Son Property Documents ,Bless Him and told Him to take care of his Junior Ones . First Woman Came to take care of the Man for two weeks before He died .Second Woman stayed away ,She was asking if The Man had been Buried ,It was after he was buried the second Woman showed up only to starts Threatening the Eldest Son to Release the Property for her so she could sell it ,She said Eldest should agree that the Man Grave should Be Removed as well Supported by the second woman's Daughter Eldest son Refused ,The Late Man Junior Brother too was Threatening the Eldest son to release the Property Documents so they could sell He Refused. Well in a Nutshell The Second Woman Died ,The Late Man Junior Brother Died too ... The Property has 4 rooms ,The rooms was shared among the 4 Children,Each Collect each room Rent . The Second Woman who Have always made trouble that the Late man should sell sell sell ,The girl from the second Woman who said Her father Grave should be opened and corpse removed and the property should be sold that she cares not is saying two Rooms Must be given to her and the rest three Boys shares two Rooms. Eldest Son said No ...He sold His Own Property to Preserve there Father's Property so he and his Juniors can have something to Inherit ,He was the one that took care of there father till Death . None showed . Of he had never sold his Property many Years ago ,A property that would have worth Lots of money today ,There won't be any father's Property to lay claim to The eldest Son said he is not even laying claim to having more than any of them but on an equal share . The Only Girl is saying since there Father has two women then it must be shared Equally . Eldest Son Says No Way ,Says Even his father refers the girl from second Woman as a Bastard and her mother s Promiscuous woman .But the Eldest Son Wasn't Showing any Hatred .
