Education / Prof, Olayinka, Emerges UI Vice-chancellor by kodedmag(m): 5:32pm On Sep 09, 2015 |
The governing council of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday announced Prof Idowu Olayinka, 57, as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution. Prof Olayinka is taking over from Prof Isaac Adewole, whose tenure ends on November 30. The professor of geology is the first VC of the school to emerge from the Faculty of Science since the school was established in 1948. While making the announcement at the school’s Senate Chamber, Pro Chancellor of the university, Dr. Umar Mustapha, said the choice of Olayinka was unanimous after three candidates were recommended by the selection committee from the six candidates that were shortlisted for the position. He said, “Out of the six candidates, three candidates were later recommended after screening and interview. They were all rated based on the performance of the candidates. The process was open and credible. Prof. Olayinka will resume on December 1, 2015. Before then, he will understudy the current VC. I thank the outgoing VC for the wonderful job he did in the university. “He took the university to greater heights. UI is today is ranked one of the best in Africa. We have the best Distance Learning Centre in Nigeria. Today, UI is locally relevant, nationally prominent and globally competitive. The new VC has more than 20 years of experience in the university and he understands the administration of the institution.” Mustapha tasked the new VC to uphold the status of the university and contribute to its greatness. He immediately issued a letter of appointment to Prof. Olayinka. The outgoing VC said the smooth process of transition in the school must be emulated by Nigeria. He said, “The process of transition was done in a civil manner. This is a message to the nation. I am happy with the opportunity given to serve the school and I will always make myself relevant to do more.” In his maiden remark, Prof. Olayinka acknowledged the contribution of the governing council in his emergence as VC, adding that he also realised the gravity of the enormous task he was inheriting. www.punchng.com/news/ui-appoints-new-vc/ |

Education / UI To Admit Only 3,000 Out Of 33,000 Candidates Seeking Admission by kodedmag(m): 10:38am On Aug 09, 2015 |
The University of Ibadan students have been
charged to embrace the distance learning mode of
study as the institution could only admit 3,000, out
of over 33,000 candidates that have applied for
admission for the next academic session.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics),
University of Ibadan, Professor Gbemisola Oke on
Friday, gave this admonition, during the 2015
annual stakeholders’ forum, organised by the
Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the institution.
At the new complex of the centre, located on Sasa-
Ajibode road, Ibadan, where the event was held,
she urged prospective students who met
admission requirements, but could not
unfortunately gain admission to embrace Distance
Learning mode of study as alternative.
“If we can’t meet the need of our people through
the regular face to face mode, then we should use
the Open Distance Learning (ODL). Education
drives growth and development and it must be at
the centre for any nation to make advancement,”
she said.
She added: “The University would ensure
qualitative and standard distance learning
education, with strict adherence to the mandate of
the nation’s premier university.”
Delivering a paper entitled ‘Accessibility and
Openness of the ODL Practice’, former Director of
Distance Learning Centre, Professor Francis
Egbokhare admitted that establishment of private
universities as solution to non-accessibility to
university education by Nigeria youths had failed,
saying that it could be ascertained from the low
patronage of private universities.
He added: “Only three per cent of the total
population of candidates seeking admission
through JAMB chose private universities. The
solution is, government should look for ways of
expanding the existing ODL facilities to be able to
accommodate more candidates.”
Meanwhile, the Director of the centre, Professor
Bayo Okunade, had said in his opening remark
that, the forum was aimed at fast tracking the
process of change being witnessed at the centre.
“The centre has advanced tremendously. We must
do it right in order to justify the purpose of our
existence, and this is why we are here to
brainstorm and engage ideas on both our
challenges and prospects.” www.newsexpressngr.com/news/detail.php?news=13806 |

Religion / ‘I Was Once A Motor Park Tout,’ Governor Ortom Testifies At RCCG Convention by kodedmag(m): 10:22am On Aug 09, 2015 |
THOUSANDS of faithfuls gathered at the Redemption Camp in what has been described as the most attended yearly convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. From across all parts of the world, the worshippers held electrifying sessions of praise and worship, as general Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye enjoined them to believe God for supernatural encounters. The Executive Governor of Benue State, Dr.Samuel Ortom, was one of the dignitaries that attended the convention, where he told the story of his life, saying he started as a motor park tout. Governor Ortom gave the testimony in appreciation of what God has done in his life, particularly during the last elections. According to him, he dropped out of secondary school in 1979 and had to take to distant learning and tutorials to go through all levels of education and to the point of Doctorate degree. “I dropped out of school at form two in 1979. After my encounter with the All Sufficient God, today through tutorials, distant learning, I have a Ph.D. I started out as a motor park tout, I passed through leadership positions in the various local and state levels and then I became the mininster for Industry, Trade and Investment at the federal level and later supervising minister of aviation. ‘’God also directed me to contest for the 2015 governorship elections, though I had no money, I went ahead and today I am the Executive Governor of Benue State because God has decided to give me a testimony’,’’ he added. Meanwhile, Pastor Adeboye has canvassed support for the multi-million naira church auditorium, which he said would serve as the new prayer ground for worshippers. He made the appeal during the Holy Ghost night of the 63rd annual convention with the titled: “The All-Sufficient God” held at the Redemption Camp, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun state yesterday. The new auditorium, which is three-times bigger than the present one, is expected to accommodate 12 million worshipers on completion. ‘’I have suddenly become a beggar, I have never asked for offering online, but this circumstance is beyond my control, I need help to complete the auditorium so that it can be used by, at least, December this year. ‘’I pray that all those who have promised me big money will show up one day. This is the first time in my life that I have almost turned a beggar and so I am appealing to well- meaning people to support this project to its completion and eventual functionality.’’ He stressed further on the need for Nigerians to keep all hope alive as “God is sufficient for our material, emotional and physical needs” Among dignitaries at the convention included the Vice president of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo, Executive Governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko, Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisaki, among others. www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/08/i-was-once-a-motor-park-tout-ortom-testifies-at-rccg-convention/#.Vcbxy2DB3oQ.facebook

Politics / Buhari Restricts Use Of Presidential Aircraft By Wife, Aides by kodedmag(m): 6:55am On Jul 24, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has restricted the use of aircraft in the presidential fleet by his wife, Hajiya Aisha, and relations. It was learnt that some members of the First Family will now use commercial flight, unless it becomes compelling for them to fly in presidential aircraft. Apart from saving cost, the President is said to be determined to prevent abuse of the presidential fleet. To set example for others, the President made sure that his wife and three children performed Umrah (Lesser Hajj ) to Makkah through Emirates Airline. They also came back with the same airline. Besides the tough measure on aircraft, the President is yet to make up his mind on whether or not his wife should be addressed as the First Lady. Hajiya Aisha Buhari is known and addressed as the “wife of the President”. The President was worried by the security reports on high cost of maintaining the presidential aircraft and abuse by some highly- placed Nigerians, The Nation learnt. During the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, about N9.08billion was spent yearly to maintain the 10 aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF). The aircraft are two Falcon 7X jets, two Falcon 900 jets, Gulf stream 550, one Boeing 737 BBJ (Nigerian Air Force 001 or Eagle One) and Gulf Stream IVSP. Others are one Gulf Stream V, Cessna Citation 2 aircraft and a Hawker Siddley 125-800 jet. A source said: “President Buhari has adopted a strict policy on the use of presidential aircraft in order to save cost. His wife and relations have been restricted from the use of the aircraft in the presidential fleet. “A situation where the aircraft were used anyhow by some friends, associates of the President during the administration of ex- President Goodluck Jonathan can no longer be applicable in this dispensation. “For example, the wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari and three children travelled for lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia on Emirates Airline. “Buhari is determined to ensure the judicious use of the presidential aircraft to save cost. He is also setting a new template for governance. Do not be surprised if you see the President using commercial flights.” Another source said: “Do you know that it costs about N747 million to fuel the aircraft in the presidential fleet per annum. President Buhari said his administration cannot afford such a luxury.” “The US President, Barrack Obama uses only two Boeing jets and one helicopter. So, Buhari is determined to cut cost. In any case, he lives an austere life. If he can ask his wife to fly a commercial jet, then other public officers must emulate his standard.” It was not immediately clear if the President will sell some of the aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet as being speculated. The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, on June 19, said he was not aware of such a plan. The President is yet to make up his mind on whether or not his wife should be addressed as the First Lady. A source said: “I think the President does not want the Office of the First Lady hijacked by vested interests as the case between 2010 and 2015 when Jonathan was in charge. “So far, Hajiya Aisha Buhari is known and addressed as the ‘Wife of the President’.” When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said: “I didn’t ask the President why he let her go on Emirates. But given the tone of his leadership, I will, however, say with all confidence that he is, by doing that, sending an important message to the country.” thenationonlineng.net/buhari-restricts-use-of-presidential-aircraft-by-wife-aides/ 1 Like |
