In Nigeria, when it comes to choosing the materials to construct a building, most people have cost in the forefront of their mind.

The general assumption of a rational mind is “steel construction is more expensive than the traditional brick and mortar construction.“

However, with the technological advances that have occurred in the building industry over the past decades, there are numerous alternative building solutions that not only save on cost but also allow for creative structural ideas, and innovative builds and designs that weren’t possible in the past.

One such technological advancement is prefab steel construction.

A solution for the creative minds (thinkers) and not for those with fixed mindset (the this-is-how-we-do-it guys)
Are you a civil engineer? Or are you into building?

Steel Vs Concrete

Most buildings that are made, are structurally made from steel. Why would an architect or designer choose one material over the other?

Concrete buildings offer many safety advantages over steel skeleton structures. Compared to steel, concrete can endure very high temperatures for long periods and offers excellent protection from explosions.

(Burj Khalifa, Dubai – 330,000 cubic meters of concrete used)

Building with concrete is also very fast. When time means money this makes it a particularly attractive option.

Unlike steel, it is also possible for large sections to be pre-fabricated off site. This again speeds up construction meaning less time developing and more time using the structure.

Companies also offer concrete repairs which tend to be a lot quicker, simpler and cheaper than other repairs on steel structures.

Steel on the other hand, in terms of cost, is generally a cheaper option.

However, the price of steel can fluctuate a lot more than concrete and it is also generally accepted that the cost of insuring a steel building is higher because of the differences in safety.

Steel offers architects a far greater array of options when it comes to building design. The strength to weight ratio of steel is higher than any other (affordable) construction material. Steel offers aesthetics that concrete may never be able to.

There are positives and negatives to both concrete and steel. But why choose one over another?
With two materials offering such diverse positives then it would be wrong to apply them together, right? Wrong. Reinforcing concrete with steel has major benefits.

Reinforced concrete with steel is by far, a lot better than either concrete or steel separately. Concrete on its own has one major downfall and that is that it is extremely strong in compression but has little to no strength when there is tension.

Rebar is used within concrete to give it the ability to carry tensile loads on a structure.

To keep protecting the environment, reinforcing steel is now commonly used. In the UK rebar is 100% recycled scrap steel and at the end of its life steel can be recovered, recycled and used again.

Although some concrete buildings may not look great, who’s to say that in the future decorative coatings and innovative designs cannot lead the way in construction?

So for safety and cost effectiveness over the long term, concrete reigns supreme despite the need for on-going maintenance and repair. This is of course why it is the natural choice of many of the buildings that we work on where safety is paramount.

StubbornWife:
The location was Ikom, Cross River state circa June 2014, I was at a vulcanizer’s along the Ikom — Ekok — Mamfe (A4) highway, I told him I was a doctor and we chatted away. While we yet spoke, a Toyota Prada SUV sped past, with 5 or 6 other cars in its trail — driving so dangerously that other cars had to veer off the road. The license plate was covered, we were also covered with the dust it had raised, then I noticed my vulcanizer friend was smiling and gesticulating wildly; “Na my town’s man be dat, first time our community get House of Reps member, at least, make our pikin still go there go chop money; na our turn”. Hon. Member could drive at top speed because we were on the good portion of the highway, though the nearby Calabar — Ikom — Ogoja highway was a death trap; a 4-hr trip taking roughly around 12 hours.

For the average Nigerian, myself included, when any appointment is made or new policy announced, before checking the merits, we check the name of the appointee or beneficiaries, state of origin, tribe and if deductible from the name or the internet, his/their religion. Every national happening is viewed through the lens of its implications for the 2023 elections. Before common sense or truth can be applied, the question is — would it hurt my tribe’s chances of producing president? In the southwest, leaders and followers are increasingly worried that the ruling party might not honour its gentleman’s agreement to hand over power to the West in 2023; the issue is more distressing than food price inflation, shut borders, insecurity amongst other ills. In the Southeast, rather than collectively push for development from a government that has not minced words in stating that they might get only crumbs considering their meagre 5% contribution in birthing the present government, their leaders are bickering, scheming and crossing carpets in an attempt to be president in 2023; again, this is more important than fixing bad roads, insecurity, unemployment etc The political situation is unclear in the south-south, but like other Nigerians, people would rather sacrifice development on the altar of producing the next president.
The north’s case is special. The presidency’s response to the shocking execution of 43 farmers on Saturday in Zabarmari, Borno state reeked of diplomatic-speak — describing the killings as ‘senseless’, weary of repeatedly threatening stiffer measures for the severely degraded Boko Haram, the blame was shifted to the security agencies adding that “the President had given all the needed support to the armed forces to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory”, and concluding with “My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief!” Just thoughts, not intentions, not actions, not a live address, not a trip to the affected community. Thoughts. Cold, impersonal, self-absolving, from-a-distance, more like how the UK government would react to local issues in faraway North Korea. 43 slaughtered in an open field, 66 unaccounted for.

The latest killings are a mirror image of happenings in the Northwest where bandits (or Boko Haram?) tax and kill farmers who insist on reaping where they have sown, but we live in denial refusing to admit that BH is now operational in the northwest and the whole of Nigeria, and also refuse to admit that the rising food prices are a product of the fact that farmers have been banned from going to their farms. If food prices are so high in harvest season, what would it look like during planting season? One of my patients from Dipchari even joked that they now kept Savings, Current and Ransom accounts, and insurance companies might need to look into providing Comprehensive Kidnapping insurance cover.
Despite these, the communique released at the end of the recent Northern Governors Forum meeting was unequivocal in their main agenda that the recent #EndSARS protests were aimed at removing their son, the president, from power, and that there was a pressing need to regulate social media. The topics of rampant kidnappings, dwindling fortunes of agriculture and general economic decline were barely touched. 2023 election permutations are more important than securing lives, properties, highways and railways. I agree with the commonly-held belief that no one dies unless God permits, I would add that no one can eat unless God permits and no one can gain power unless God permits, yet, we go out to work so we can eat, we don’t wait for God to throw down a leader from heaven — we go out to vote, but when the topic of holding our own leaders to account is raised, the hypocritical Godcentric nigerian-ness is brought to the fore.

While we continue our obsession with 2023, we might need to prepare for harder times as we continue to gloat over owing a big car that doesn’t have an engine. This is 2020, we still have three years to go…

Leopold extracted a fortune from the Congo, initially by the collection of ivory, and after a rise in the price of rubber in the 1890s, by forced labour from the natives to harvest and process rubber. Under his regime millions of Congolese people died.

Leopold II implemented a forced-labour system in the Congo that was quickly copied by other European colonial powers. This brutal practice was a catastrophe for the population of the Congo and whole of Africa countries

This man is a seasoned philanthropist and medical practitioner but Soludo is a refined and well travelled man with sound economic strategy...

I would have loved to support Maduka (reason being that he's still a virgin in Nigeria politics and for the fact that to some extent he has not been corrupted by politicians via godfatherism) but I'm the same time scared that he will be naive and can be easily played by some dirty politicians in Anambra...

But I will reluctantly support Soludo because he has experience and has seen it all at world, federal and local politics ....... and i love his practical approach to economic transformation agenda.

I'm desperately looking forward to see how he can turn Anambra's major cities to African-Dubai-Taiwan .... (because I feel that when the international airport in Anambra is finally commissioned come April next year it will so much help the incoming governor of my beloved state. THE LIGHT OF THE NATION)

Fuckingmallam45:
A lot of people tend to celebrate Rawlings because the optics are good. Yes, he came to power via a millitary coup detat but left as an elected civilian president. He stressed financially judicious policies, struck down on corruption and overall actually did more to develop Ghana than anyone since Nkrumah.

But these actions do not make one a Revolutionary. A revolutionary challenges and attempts to change a system in place that oppreses or otherwise subjucates. Rawlings never tried to change the system in place, in fact he only wanted to make the preexisting system “better", and like I stated, some of his policies ended up hurting Ghana badly down the line.

At the crux of it, he either lacked the balls to challenge the West (like a certain Nelson Mandela) or simply just had great ideas but not a transcendental leader by visionary proclivities (Haile Selassie etc). Thus there's little to no chance why the West will ever see him as a threat. It's not like Rawlings was actively challenging for African control over commodity prices, the debt trap of Neo-colonialism or any other facets which represent the continued domination of Africa and Africans by the West.

In my opinion, Rawlings is so overrated, I guess he has a really good PF team. As individuals like Murtala Mohammed, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Ken Sawo-Wiwa, Winnie Mandela, Steve Biko, Robert Saboukwe and Amilcar Cabral deserve far greater credit and adulation than JJ Rawlings.
My opinion though grin
You started well and ended so badly by even mentioning any Nigeria person name at all....

Lemme just explain it here.

ALL ADMOB ADVERTIZERS IN NIGERIA AND NAIRALAND ARE 90% SCAM....
COMMON SENSE IS REALLY NOT COMMON
Real Admob can not be done here... not even with VPN...

I DO THE REAL ADMOB.... and it works but guess what... you have to get someone from FIVERR, UPWORK,SEOCLERK to do it for you.... someone from another country...
AFTER THAT, you need to pay google $25 to get your app on playstore
then you market your app.... get at least 100 downloads and you will MAKE MONEY FOREVER WITHOUT BAN.

Lastly a little sense I applied, is to have a group of 100+ people who will click each other's apps.... and PEOPLE GET PAID... its a quiet money... as little as 80k monthly or more... based on how many people are in your own little group. Its something no one will teach you but sense will just fall on you once you understand how google thinks.... YOU ARE NOT SELF CLICKING... you just have 100+ friends who download your clouded app and click on it daily for each other.

So you see, It's very simple... all these people here shouting ADMOB IS SCAM.... never took time to learn how ADSENSE/ADWORDS work, they do not know how to DEVELOP APPS FROM SCRATCH.... but because schemers and scammers who have little knowledge have paraded themselves as ADMOB VENDORS.... they have scammed many people.

Like I always say... THOSE OF US WHO TRULY MAKE MONEY DO NOT HAVE TIME TO DO WHATSAPP CLASSES OR SELL EBOOKS.

I am not here to mentor anyone, I have just explained it clear for anyone who is smart to know that IT IS A LEGIT WAY TO EARN.

Your only PROBLEM in all this is........................... YOU HAD NO MENTOR.

Any mentor would tell you that
BLOGGING takes years before it can give tangible results.
FOREX at its best can only be a small side hustle....NEVER A MAJOR SOURCE and to mitigate the stress of forex you have to do PAMM.
FREELANCING only profits you if you do it as ARBITRAGE... and on at least 6 top platforms...
WEBDESIGN is not profiting because it is now a common skill unless you upgrade to FLIPPING DOMAINS and PARKING your domains then paying influencers to market them for you....

In all these, am only trying to show you that you got burnt because your knowledge about these things were not VAST ENOUGH because you were not trained by someone who was really EARNING from them consistently. So I suggest you get a mentor and watch how they will all turn to profitable streams of income.

NOTE OF ADVICE:
Consider Real Estate & Agrotech.... it is very profitable... even for webdesigners, many naija agrotech do not have websites or even a media manager... it is still a new niche in Nigeria.
Also learn how to do ADMOB and make endless income without depending on clients...
