“My English Is Very Bad” – Peller Breaks Down, Reveals Plan to Return to University

https://eyesoflagos.com/2026/01/06/peller-english-struggles-return-to-university/
The foundations of good English start from very good primary schools NOT the University.

The late music icon, Sunny Okosuns NEVER went beyond the primary school education yet he spoke fluent English. With parental guidance, Sunny Okosuns learned some vocational skills and then became a music star right from the early 1980s when I started listening to his iconic songs.

The young man's (Pellar) spoken English isn't very good and sounds rough to the ears, BUT even as a young adult, WITHIN 1 year of hiring a good private English diction coach with a knowledge of phonetics, he'll get BETTER and it's good he identified that problem. It's just like learning how to speak French or any other language... YOU need a private coach.

So, why did he oppose it in 2012?

Yes, GEJ should have removed it self, but it was clear that tinubu opposed subsidy removal in 2012.
I'm surprised you're asking this sort of question. There wasn't any alternative source of energy source like the construction of any green refineries as promised by GEJ's Government after protests had erupted in Lagos, Kano, and other major cities in Nigeria.

Look, the so-called fuel subsidy removal in 2012 would have been much MORE brutal economically for Nigerian folks than the fuel subsidy removal of 2023 due to the FACT that there was NO new Petrochemical Refinery being built anyway in Nigeria to cushion the negative effects of subsidy removal. There is currently a functioning Dangote Petrochemical Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki LGA of Lagos State whose presence in Ibeju-Lekki was facilitated in the early 2000 by the governor of the then Governor 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his team with lands given to Aliko Dangote for construction work.

Second, many folks around Nigeria (NOT 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu alone) strongly resisted the GEJ subsidy removal back then in 2012 (including Chimamanda and other folks) because it would have led to widespread hyperinflation! They only people I remember who were criticized for NOT joining the protests are from the South East region traders who opened their so-called shops to trade.

Subsequently when the 2012 Occupy Nigeria (anti-fuel subsidy protests started), NO plans for building green refineries was on the ground. Like lemmings, some highly uninformed NL posters who CLEARLY were younger or little kids as of 2012 have been claiming unwisely that some people currently at the helms of political affairs were against the 2012 removal of subsidy.

ALSO due to the constant fears of those in the Military Goverments (in the early 1990s) of NOT being in the good books of public opinion and the fear of losing re-election under the democratically elected guys since 1999, they just simply chose to ignore the removal of the fuel subsidy till 2023 when the now President 'Bola Tinubu officially removed it.

This is the BEST time ever to remove any fuel subsidy due to the Dangote Petrochemical Refinery and some levels of CNG-FUEL infrastructure in place.

Second, crude oil production is set to resume in Ogoniland
, so, everything is panning out right for the good of that region in terms of government representation and increased revenue.

This is totally speculative BECAUSE Venezuelan crude oil has a higher sulphur content than Nigeria's low sulphur content.

Second, the local refining capacity of crude oil (value addition) or any other commodity (cocoa, cashew nuts, sesame seeds, etc) is the key for unlocking more wealth in billions of USD, NOT the sale of unrefined crude oil or other raw cash commodities. More value addition is where Nigeria MUST be at. Period.

wazobeer:
I am a Lagosian 100% and I support the reactivation of other ports as well as the decongestion of Lagos ports.

Sanwo-Olu doesn't need to fret because most people will still use the Lagos port anyway, but the revenues might be lower. The population of Lagos is a major factor and the largest market is there, regardless of any overbloated ego any group of people have.

If the Lekki Deep Seaport can have advanced infrastructure, Lagos would even generate more revenue with time.
I like the positivity in your post.

Babatunde Sanwo-Olu ISN'T even "fretting" over anything. It's the highly irresponsible sensationalism in the newspaper report from ThisDay newspaper and other posters here and online spreading disinformation and ethnic bigotry and hate speech largely targeted by a section of people from the East of Nigeria on YouTube over this matter that's the problem. They are highly ignorant of the FACT that President 'Bola Tinubu's wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu was born by an Itsekiri woman from Warri (she married an Ijebu man from Ogun State), hence Oluremi Tinubu is maternally directly from the Warri area in Delta State. The NPA is under a Yoruba man so what's the targeted hate speech for?

Onne River Port too is currently functioning and people are using it. Yet they keep irresponsibly shouting and spreading propaganda online, "Lagos monopoly, we are in Lagos because of the ports. How many of these economic migrants use the Lagos ports?"

The other River Ports in Calabar, Warri, Koko, Burutu, Onitsha have been functioning in the past BUT have been very expensive to maintain annually due to the millions of Naira needed for the constant dredging or desilting of the rivers along which those River Ports were built.

At the end of the day, shipping experts will tell you that it's the shipping companies that will decide whether to come to a River Ports or NOT because large ships cannot sail into shallow rivers where most of these River Ports are located.

The advantage Lagos is experiencing has to do with being naturally located along the Atlantic Ocean and the West African regional and international business coastline. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the FACT that Lagos Island (a very tiny part of Lagos State) was the administrative capital of Nigeria from 1914 to 1991.
That fabricated claim by one IRRESPONSIBLE poster on this thread is dishonest! The Lagos-Kano-Jibia trade route is currently the busiest in the whole of Nigeria and MOST of the containers coming into Nigeria are meant for the industries in Lagos, Ogun, Ibadan industrial hubs and the Northern States. Then another set the east of Nigeria.

There's way too many uninformed posters on this website who have NO business being here to mislead others who just want CREDIBLE information.

You are very right on this.
My great-grandfather who I never met left over 200 oil-palm trees (the tall varieties) when he died.

In the month of October, the caretaker who manages the hectares of land in the South-west pat of Nigeria recently called me to come and pick up 12 (25kg) kegs of red palm oil for the extended family.

Each keg at market price costs N60,000. Cool cash right!!!

On the same plot of land, there is Cocoa in a section (river side) of the land, there are oranges and mangoes, Bitter Kola and plantain trees.
Imagine, what comes from the land yearly without ever breaking sweat.

My fathers brothers recently planted another 100 oil-palm trees (short agric variety) in the last ten years.
Most of them have passed away but the legacy still remains.

Not everything is buildings or hotels or houses.
That's a powerful testimonial right there. The introduction of Western education and the gravitation towards the so-called white collar jobs especially from the 1950s in the Old Western region led to the younger folks leaving their hometowns where they have family agricultural lands. Cash crop-based tree such as palm trees, cashew nut trees, avocados, mangos, bananas and plantains, etc, MUST NEVER be abandoned.

The corrupt military dictatorship years experienced in Nigeria made things far WORSE with the old boom when the corrupt military guys we experienced abandoned sustainable agriculture. Fortunately improved varieties of palm trees exist today that start fruiting in two years unlike 7 years in the past, so, those who know about the supply and demand side are taking advantage of the opportunities.

Good advice. In Islam, this action is part of what is called sadaqah jariya meaning continuous charity that one would continue to benefit even after death. Let's plant trees, let's build school, boreholes, toilets for the benefit of humanity

Car TalkRe: Many Nigerian Drivers Waste Fuel Without Knowing This Simple Habit by Konquest: 11:33am On Dec 15, 2025
NaijaCars234:
With fuel prices biting hard, many Nigerian drivers are looking for ways to cut costs. What most people do not realise is that something as simple as tire pressure can quietly increase fuel consumption and even lead to accidents.

Driving with under-inflated tires makes your engine work harder. The result is higher petrol usage, especially on long trips and rough Nigerian roads. Over time, this small issue drains money without the driver noticing.

Safety is another major concern. Tires that are not properly inflated reduce grip on the road, particularly during rain or when driving at high speed. This increases the chances of skidding, tire bursts, and loss of control, which are common causes of road accidents in Nigeria.

There is also the issue of tire lifespan. When tire pressure is ignored, tires wear out unevenly and need replacement much earlier than expected. Considering how expensive tires have become, this is an avoidable loss.

Checking tire pressure once a week is enough to make a difference. It can be done at fuel stations, roadside vulcanizers, or with a personal pressure gauge. Always follow the pressure level recommended by your car manufacturer.

This simple weekly habit can save fuel, reduce accidents, and help Nigerian drivers spend less on vehicle maintenance.

How often do you check your tire pressure, and have you noticed any difference in fuel consumption or driving comfort?
True that. It's so obvious but a lot of folks don't follow these universal basic rules of checking the vehicle "tire" (or "tyre" in British-English) pressures.
CultureRe: Yoruba And Kanuri Are Cousins - Prof Olaniyi by Konquest: 11:00am On Dec 15, 2025
searchng4love:
Yoruba diaspora in northern Nigeria is better understood within the historical context of the respective host communities and indeed the entire history of northern Nigeria as a whole. It is equally important to examine the interaction of resources and opportunities in order to understand the dynamics of Yoruba commerce in northern Nigeria. Isa Hashim has offered three explanations why the Yoruba were accepted in the north.

1 First, according to Islamic tradition, the Yoruba were regarded as brothers and sisters of the Hausa people because the majority of Yoruba migrants were Muslims. This suggests why some Yoruba have been assimilated into Hausa culture or enjoy accommodation.

Second, economically, they were hardworking in tarnish of their technical skills, productivity and quality of work delivery.

Third, the Yoruba shared myth of origin with the Kanuri. Oral tradition in Borno has it that the “Yoruba and Kanuri were cousins.

According to one mythology, the Yoruba were said to be outspoken while the Kanuri were calm people who detested discussing their private affairs in public, particularly those issues concerning their sexuality. The Kanuri thus referred to the Yoruba as “Khairuba,” meaning that there is no alheri in your habit (that is, you don't keep secret, go away!). It was from “ Khairuba ” that Yoruba was derived. 2 There are those who claimed that the similarity in Yoruba and Kanuri culture could further be observed in their passion for singing, particularly among their women.
Indeed, the Yorubas and Hausas have historically engaged in trading activities with one another for centuries peaking during the days of the military strong Oyo Empire when Yoruba traders engaged in long-distance trading with Hausaland via the Nupe country. The Oyos went as far as Timbuktu to trade and modern Ghana centuries ago, hence the presence of Yoruba descendants in Ghana today.

There are many Yoruba folks (largely Muslim) in the far North of Nigeria and parts of the Middle Belt (Not the indigenous Yorubas of Kwara and Kogi States) who if you aren't told that they are Yorubas, you would think they are Hausas because they are very fluent in Hausa language and have developed the Hausa accent especially the descendants of the original Yoruba folks who migrated to places such as the Katsina, Niger, Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe and Zamfara States.
CultureRe: Yoruba And Kanuri Are Cousins - Prof Olaniyi by Konquest: 10:55am On Dec 15, 2025
christistruth01:
Yoruba and Kanuri actually share the same Ancient Ancestors who migrated from the Sudan together to Lake Chad before the Ancestors of the Yorubas continued with their journey Southwards Until they reached the Atlantic coast.

The ancient Ijebu And Kanuri used to share similar Tribal Marks and once Oduduwa went to help the Kanuri as Military allies against the invading Arab relatives of the Shuwa Arabs and returned to Ile Ife with Camels as spoils of War.

That was the first time Camels and horses were ever seen in Ile Ife.

Till today Kanuri are still indigenous to the Western Sudan.
Interesting insights.

Do you have historical book references for the bolded section of your post ABOVE.

I'm aware though that large-scale migrations took place from out of Nubia or the Eastern Sudan region into West Africa within the last 1500 years and the Kanuris and their Kanembu cousins engaged in the trans-Saharan trade and maintained diplomatic relations with North African over 1,000 years ago.
I listened to a BBC World Service interview back in the 1990s and a community called "NIMBIA" in Kaduna State claimed they migrated from NUBIA in the modern Sudan area via the Lake Chad area before moving from Kanuriland to their current location. General Yakubu Gowon's ethnic group, the Angas of Plateau State too claim to be of Kanuri origin. Further advanced ancestry DNA tests are needed to confirm and indeed affirm the alleged Yoruba relationship with the Kanuris.

The "Shuwa Arabs" are refered to as "Black Arabs" who emerged from the Dafur area of North Sudan in books and online sources I have read and they are "distinct" in features from the supposed "pure Arabs" who are ORIGINALLY of the Arabian Peninsula who migrated out to settle in new areas via the conquests of Christian (Coptic Orthodox Egypt), Nubia/Sudan, the Berber areas of North Africa, Turkey, etc.

Firebrand South African politician Julius Malema, leader of the radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has launched a blistering attack on U.S. President Donald Trump, branding him “the new Adolf Hitler” over remarks targeting South Africa’s hosting of the G20 summit. Malema accused Trump of arrogance and global bullying after the U.S. president questioned South Africa’s role as host, while positioning America to stage the same high-profile summit in 2026. The EFF leader said Trump’s comments reflect imperialist contempt for African leadership and warned that South Africa would not be intimidated or sidelined on the global stage.

Two US soldiers and interpreter killed by IS gunman in Syria, US says

Dearbail Jordan

US and Syrian forces were ambushed in Palmyra in central Syria

Two US soldiers and a US civilian interpreter have been killed in Syria in an ambush by a lone Islamic State gunman, the US military has said.

Officials said three other service members were injured in the attack, during which the gunman was "engaged and killed".

The identities of those killed are being withheld for 24 hours until their next of kin have been informed, the US Central Command said.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said: "Let it be known, if you target Americans - anywhere in the world you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you."

The ambush occurred in Palmyra, located in the centre of the country, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell.

A Pentagon official said: "This attack took place in an area where the Syrian president does not have control."

They added that initial assessements showed the attack was likely to be carried out by the Islamic State group.

Syria recently joined an international coalition to combat IS and has pledged to co-operate with the US.

Last month, President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with Donald Trump at the White House in a visit that the Syrian leader said was part of a "new era" for the two countries.

The global coalition is aimed at eliminating the remaining elements of the so-called Islamic State and stemming the flow of foreign militants to the Middle East.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9d9vpxjp2go
The global war on terror MUST be holistic. The West African Sahel region is now the most officially terrorized part of the world from jihadi terror groups. The United States, the EU, and the rest of the world MUST team up with these West African countries in joint military operations to decimate the Tuareg-led JNIM with headquarters in Mali but JNIM has captured (since the Russians offered military assistance to those 3 countries under military dictatorships) over half of Burkina Faso's landmass, over half of Mali's landmass, much of Niger Republic.

Nigeria also has BH and ISWAP operating in the Lake Chad Region and the foreign Fula militia bandits all have to be taken down otherwise agriculture and other business es would continue to suffer and the war on terror will further drain the pockets of those West African countries. Period.
