Education › Osun Distributes Computer Tablets Of Knowledge For Test-running by koruji(op): 1:35am On Jun 12, 2012 |
May the Almighty continue to support Gov. Aregbesola in Osun State. Despite the pitiable position of Osun among Nigerian States Aregbesola promised to make the state not only viable, but a leading state within Nigeria. The man is so hungry to make an impact, and has the vision to back it up. It will not be perfect or even complete, but Gov. Aregbesola's approach to governance is purposeful, determined and genuine. May success continue to follow his efforts, with the support of the populace. http://www.osundefender.org/?p=32231 Government of the State of Osun has distributed over 100 Computer Tablets of Knowledge (Opon Imo), an initiative of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led administration, to students for test-running, with a view to making adjustments where necessary. The team of experts handling the project disclosed this at Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo last Friday during a sensitisation programme for the Senior Secondary School (SSS2) students of the school, who have been selected for the test-running of the computer tablets. The computer tablets, which was designed to improve the learning among secondary school students and prepare them for external and internal examinations, was designed in the form of iPad and would be given to the students free-of-charge. A member of the team, Mr Oyintiloye Olatunbosun, the Assistant Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, (Community Forum) in the Office of the Governor, who addressed the students, said that even though all students in SS1, SS2, and SS3 across the state would be given the tablets, the students of Ataoja School of Sciencehave been selected for the test-running, assuring the parents and students of other schools not to entertain any fear. He said that after distributing the tablets to the students for test-running, they would be retrieved in the next two weeks, during which the students are expected to have used it both in school and at home and give feedback, including suggestion for improvement, where necessary. According to him, since such project has never been embarked upon by any government, there are bound to be shortcomings and after suggestion might have been taken from the students and teachers who have used the tablets for test-running and all necessary adjustment are made, the project would then be launched and distributed to all students in the state. He called on students to handle the computer tablets with care, both at home and in school, with a view to ensuring that the purposes of the project are not defeated. Installed in each of the computer tablets are the soft copies of all the subjects being offered in secondary schools with different text books and lesson notes, as well as past questions of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), National Examination Council Examination (NECO), as well as Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The Principal of the School, Mr AjidahunAdedayo, saluted Governor Aregbesola’s determination to ensure that students of the State of Osun are able to meet up with any students in the world, stressing that the Opon Imo initiative was a milestone that has never been achieved by any government. He also appreciated the government for chosen his school as a pilot for the project, promising that everything would be done to ensure that the computer tablets are handled with care by the students, with a view to serving the purpose it is meant for. |
Politics › Osun ACN Congratulates Aregbesola, Wife On Environmental Award by koruji(op): 1:29am On Jun 12, 2012 |
http://www.osundefender.org/?p=32238
Osun State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has congratulated Governor Rauf Aregbesola for the international and regional award of excellence he got last Thursday in recognition of his outstanding performance in environmental management and youth empowerment. The investiture was done in Osogbo to mark the 2012 World Environmental Day celebration by the African Round Table of Sustainable Consumption and Production, under the auspices of the United Nations. The international body said it took the decision for the award on the governor, in recognition of the fact that he was the first to declare emergency on environment in the country, and initiate mass employment of youths in the country with O’YES project. According to the ACN, in a statement issued and signed by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, in spite of the attempts by political opponents of the governor to denigrate his achievements since he reclaimed his mandate, it is heartening that the world continues to appreciate Aregbesola’s work. Oyatomi said it is a welcome development and encouraging that the world has continued to honour the governor for his efforts in changing the face of the state of Osun by cleaning up its environment and taking thousands of youths off the unemployment market. The party, therefore, urged the governor to continue in his strategic approach to governance, which is producing results beyond the mental capacity of his political opponents to understand or appreciate. “The people of the State of Osun not only love what is going on, they feel grateful that the governor has not allowed negative criticisms to dampen his enthusiasm for service to our people”, the party spokesman said. Also, the party congratulated the governor’s wife, Alhaja Sherifat Aregbesola, who was made an Ambassador of Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) by the Federal Government. “By this award, the governor’s wife has set a precedent of total commitment to the programmes being pursued by her husband to keep Osun clean and green. It is a refreshing departure from the ordinary that has become common with some first ladies. “This kind of support from the home front will contribute greatly to assisting the governor to perform even more excellently to the joy and progress of the state”, the ACN noted. |

Politics › Akpabio: Nigerians Urgently Deserve A National Carrier (contradictions Galore) by koruji(op): 5:38pm On Jun 10, 2012 |
http://tribune.com.ng/sun/news/7552-dana-air-crash-nigerians-urgently-deserve-a-national-carrier-gov-akpabio Written by Shola Adekola, Lagos Sunday, 10 June 2012
AGAINST the backdrop of last Sunday’s plane crash involving MD83 aircraft which belonged to DANA Air killing 153 passengers on board and six people on ground, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio has called for an immediate need for the floating of a national carrier.
Akpabio, who spoke with some aviation journalists on arrival from an oversea trip Friday night, said it was due to the absence of a national carrier that all manner of questionable private airlines sprang up in the country.
According to him, if the country had had a national carrier, Nigerians would have had alternatives rather than being at the mercy of the private carriers.
Akpabio who was sad following the crash declared during the interview; “we must ensure proper monitoring of all the airlines that operate in Nigeria particularly to be sure that they go for the checks when the need arises and they don’t cut corners.
“As it is now, government must also think of how we can have a national carrier. I don’t see how countries such as Senegal, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia and so on would have their national carriers and Nigeria would be the only major country in Africa that does not have one. I think it is something we must sit down and think about again because the situation now is urgent. We must not even delay it. That a country with 160 million people can stay without a national carrier is unthinkable, almost half of the population has no access to aeroplane, that is the truth. It is because of this gap that people are trying to fill as a result of a lack of national carrier, that we are having mushroom airlines coming on board.
“We must have one in order to move forward. Why should we still have British Airways, Air France, Ethiopian Airline, Kenyan Airways and so on? I think we can’t allow 160 million Nigerians to be without a national carrier. I will want to urge the Federal Government to look at that immediately. For me as a state governor, I would be glad to take part in that because something that looks like a national carrier will give confidence to air travellers.”
Akpabio, who expressed his readiness to partner with government and the private sector for the purpose of giving Nigerians a befitting national carrier, said: “The current administration is capable of bringing up a national carrier because of its international reputation. I don’t mind if we still have to partner with the private sector, but don’t forget that the greatest problem of Nigeria in the past has been corruption and of course cutting corners and all that. If you look at the Nigeria Airways in the past, one-third of the passengers had complementary tickets because they were related to the workers of the airline or they came from the office of the permanent secretary. We must not run it like a ministry, but rather like a commercial entity and I think if we do so, we will succeed.”
“As it is today, you don’t see anybody working in the office of the Prime Minister getting British Airways ticket free. We must stop all the free ticket thing and run it as a commercial entity. Government cannot totally neglect the idea of putting money in social services.” |

It is only in Nigeria that a man that should be facing impeachment on the ground of "incompetence" is instead making preparations for a second term.
The subsidy fiasco alone is enough ground for him to hide his face from Nigerians - the shame of promising so much and delivering so little or nothing. He brought untimely death to 19 innocent lives, ruined the livelihood of countless others over unSURE promises that had no chance of being met, and worst of all he is completely powerless to contain a $7 billion-big corruption in the subsidy system ALONE! He would rather go around the globe to borrow almost the same amount of funds.
Let him contest - Nigerians will be waiting to ask him what he did with the first term!!! |

Politics › Oshiomhole Challenges Minister On N2.6billion Contract by koruji(op): 2:43am On Jun 10, 2012 |
Quotes: “I am inviting the President to come and flag off the construction of that road so he can see that the road does not exist, “he added. He accused the PDP candidate, Gen.Charles Airhiavbere, of ignorance of events in the state. “The man does not even know the state he wants to govern. He said he will pay salary arrears. Is there any worker we are owing in Edo State?” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/06/oshiomhole-challenges-minister-on-n2-6billion-contract/ By Simon Ebegbulem GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, alleged that the Minister of Works, Architect Mike Onolemenmen, awarded N2.6bn road contract in Uromi, Edo State which nobody could see. Disclosing this in a rally at Egor, Benin City, where he officially received a former presidential aide, Prof.Julius Ihonvbere, into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the governor asserted that “the godfather and the godson got the FEC into awarding a N2.6bn for a road contract that nobody sees in Uromi”. “I am inviting the President to come and flag off the construction of that road so he can see that the road does not exist, “he added. The governor posited that rather than campaign and tell the people of the state their plans for the development of the state, “the PDP leaders in Edo Central and Edo North were busy buying voters cards. As we speak, five of them have been charged to court on account of buying voters cards. Now that the PDP people have been caught red handed, we want to see what punishment INEC and Jega will mete out to these people.” He accused the PDP candidate, Gen.Charles Airhiavbere, of ignorance of events in the state. “The man does not even know the state he wants to govern. He said he will pay salary arrears. Is there any worker we are owing in Edo State?” National leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Chief Bola Tinubu, who addressed the rally, urged people of the state to sustain the development strides in the state. Other ACN leaders who spoke on the occasion were Governors Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State. Meanwhile, Ihonvbere, an erstwhile Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo on Policy and Strategy and a former governorship aspirant of the PDP, said the PDP in Edo represents “oppression, intimidation, repression, retrogression and decay”. He said he is an old boy of Edo College and had to spend his personal resources to work on the roof and equip the computer laboratory of the school which was left to rot for years by the PDP, but which has now been rehabilitated by the ACN, saying “go there now and see what Oshiomhole is doing”. |

I will not trust any of these northern politicians as far as I could throw them.
When they have openly come out to declare their manifesto and their candidates and abandoned PDP it would be time to decide whether they are good for us.
Otherwise, I see a betrayal that will make OBJ's 2003 stab in the back child's play.
Again, I say let them leave PDP if they feel so strongly about it.

Politics › Re: Nigerian Citizens Are The Problems Of Nigeria NOT The Government by koruji(m): 3:19am On Jun 04, 2012 |
Partly correct. That doesn't change the fact that government (in whatever form) must move first in order to move a nation forward. This basic rule is not just common sense, it is supported by history, the laws of physics and economics. That is why government is endowed with so much power. All of history is replete with nations that were run-down and full of "neanderthals", and yet out of those so-called "neanderthal societies" emerged strong nations. What you are refering to is the bastardization of the government in the Nigerian context - but that does not change the definition and role of government. There is no doubt that the Nigerian context is extremely complex, and this makes it difficult the right leaders to emerge Believe me, our nation has the "talented few". The problem is they are few, and against the hordes of charlattans.PapaBrowne: Very funny. Wish you can think about the reality of our existence for a moment. What is Government and what does it consist of. It consists of humans that yesterday were a part of the regular society. So Big Question: Why do people that yesterday were a part of the regular society get to into the place called "government" and become neanderthals? Answer, because the regular society is filled with neanderthals in the waiting. All they need is an environment that would help them bring it out. The place called government is that perfect environment. The biggest problems we face steer us in the face in our everyday life. We see our friends steal the office dry and we either join them or turn a blind eye. The same students screaming Jonathan is clueless for renaming UNILAG would be cheating in class when exams start tommorow. The same doctors that are cursing on Fashola are selling drugs given free to patients. The market woman cheats. The Okada rider steals. The bank worker is a fraudster and the fast food owner is deliberately selling rotten chicken. And you know why?? Because they are all rotten and would do worse when given the perfect environment!! Ask yourself, why is it Nigerians selling drugs on the streets of Europe, Thailand and Brazil?? Why not Zambians or Peruvians or Cambodians?? Now tell me, does the Nigerian Government train these people in the art of Drug dealing?? Or is Nigeria the only country with a messed up leadership?? THINK MAN, THINK. THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH OUR CULTURE. A CULTURE THAT PREVENTS US FROM TAKING RESPONSIBILITY, BUT ENCOURAGES BLAME SHIFTING. Change will come only when people begin to seek to influence their little environment! It would start from the ground up. |

Politics › Re: Nigerian Citizens Are The Problems Of Nigeria NOT The Government by koruji(m): 1:48am On Jun 04, 2012 |
This is complete upside down. If we have to do personal stuff before government lives up to its responsibilities why do we need a government before we can accomplish this personal chores. The real issue is that many of the things that we need to do in our personal life depend on a government meeting its responsibilities FIRST.PapaBrowne: The leaders we talk about, were all members of the populace yesterday before they went to Abuja. Truth be told, the current situation of the country is a reflection of the people that inhabit the country. The sad thing is that rather than look inwards, we are deflect our responsibilities and point hands at the leaders(people whose existence is totally dependent on us). To get a better picture, look at the interiors of where Nigerians live, where Government has no jurisdiction over its functionality, and you'll find squalor and filth as a cultural anecdote. Filthier than the exteriors we blame the governments for failing to fix. The problem is with 'we the people" and the revolution that we seek can only start from within us. Before you ask Abuja to fight corruption, what have you done about the sleaze going on in your office? Before you ask Abuja to fix the road, what have you done about your filthy unpainted house? Before you ask Abuja to fix the hospitals, what have you done about your broken sewage? Before you ask Abuja to fix education, stop cheating and exam malpractice!! The revolution that would change this country can only start from withing us because the rot has corrupted every fabric of the society! |

I am of course aware of this criticism of the source of Abiola's wealth. The fact is that no case was ever brought against the man & for good reason too. I call him truly noble because unlike all the other looters Abiola was pre-eminent in: 1) The extent of his largesse to all and sundry; 2) He voluntarily laid down his life for what he believed in. Now I am not doubting that he actually looted those funds, but as you yourself noted he had accomplices, including our much beloved Murtala Mohammed for whom we named the pre-eminent national airport. The other prominent player was the other bossom friend of his, IBB. We all know that all those guys along with OBJ, Abacha and Danjuma represented the group that essentially held Nigeria by the throat after the civil war. For reference, please read this for reference so you know that I understand the sordid nation called Nigeria very well http://maxsiollun./2008/06/02/what-if-abiola-had-become-president/. Today, we are talking about President GEJ. Did he not get there due to the machinations of the same group of people? Are we not seeing blantant, almost open, stealing of government funds, even as GEJ thinks the next thing is to prepare for 2015? For some reason, the group that is holding Nigeria by the throat decided to freeze Abiola out the way they have done to Buhari - even though they were part of this grand Nigerian "coalition". In any case, you have no basis for suggesting that Abiola doesn't deserve a place to be named after him - that only serves your agenda. In my book, none of them would deserve a place named after them for what they have done to Nigeria. But as long as we cannot start from scratch (may be we could, but I don't know) and there is a Murtala Mohammed Airport then Abiola National Stadium would have made more sense. Abiola payed the ultimate price like Murtala Mohammed. There are many Mid-Westeners who cannot stand his name though - so what gives. My points are: 1) Abiola redeemed himself with his last days - the way he spent the money on people when he had it, and the way he gave it all up suggest that he was truly noble at heart. Unlike the other "as.ses" who stole money, took it to swiss accounts, built top of the hill mansions for themselves, etc; 2) Yoruba and other SW (and other Nigerians should also) hold Abiola in high esteem for the principle of democracy represented by June 12th. In Nigeria, the beautiful ones are just not yet born - and may never be!!! ndu_chucks: I'd rather believe that you are speaking out of ignorance than deception, so I implore you to read up on MKO Abiola, his ITT contract, the looting of Liberia's $5billion a la IBB, e.t.c.
I'm very glad that you just opened a thread which exposes massive fraud in Nasarawa state wherein $113 in Paris club loan disappeared into thin air. I hope the perpetrators are caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Now lets assume the person responsible for this theft is never caught, as typical in Nigeria, and this person ends up in five years running for President, denied the office, and dies in jail like MKO, would you then call this common thief a noble man? I venture to say, of course not. Now imagine you calling a man who stole billions of dollars, a noble man!! It does not take a genius to know that your position is hypocritical.
Read how I really feel about MKO Abiola here
We need to stop worshiping these looters and thieves regardless of what part of Nigeria they are from. |

Democracy Day in Nasarawa State turned into a day of lamentation for the state governor, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al’Makura, who expressed frustration over payment of N17 billion Paris Club loan his government never took. The governor said since he took over power a year ago, he has been battling with triple tragedy of having to offset a huge debt of N30 billion left by his predecessor, in addition to refunding the sum of $240 million taken years ago by a former governor of the state. He made this known in Lafia when addressing stakeholders in the state on Democracy Day anniversary, lamenting that a huge loan of N17 billion taken by former government of the state disappeared without a trace, leaving him to pay the debt which he never incurred. He said the sum, amounting to $113 million was assessed, received, banked and eventually disappeared with no trace under the watchful eyes of a government headed by Alhaji Akwe Doma. The money, he said, just disappeared without any trace, adding, “There was no record of expenditure by anyone, there was no legislation backing any spending of it and there was no project sited anywhere in the state in the name of the money. Al’Makura said, so far, his government had lost the sum of N2.3 billion to the fictitious debt, while making conscious efforts to contain excess spending in the state. Al’Makura stated further that the allocation from the Federal Government due to the state has continued to witness consistent decline from February 2012, notwithstanding the huge debt profile hanging on the neck of the state.
According to him, his administration has been managing the finances of the state without borrowing a penny from any bank, while ensuring payment of workers’ salaries as and when due. |

You have your own agenda, and you are simply using GEJ's action to promote it. The funny thing is you play it both ways well enough that Beaf thinks you are supporting GEJ. Truth. Below you say "with the exception of Tinubu" - but you forgot that even Tinubu suggested there are better ways to honor Abiola. Plus, this exposes your hypocrisy, many other leaders have come out openly in support of the name change. Tinubu actually captured the feeling of the SW. There is no hypocrisy about Abiola in the SW - we lover Abiola and what he represented in the June 12 struggle. The hyprocrisy part is your agenda - please carry it somewhere else. Most interesting however is the part where you said: "I would have been more impressed if the objections of the SW leaders were because MKO Abiola played a major role in the corruption and decay of Nigeria". You would have loved that the most won't you? It would have been a perfect fit for your agenda - this is why I said you are really an operative. FYI, whatever corruption Abiola could be accused of most Nigerian leaders and those you shelter with are worse offenders. We operate a corrupt system of things in Nigeria in which even the newborn is almost certainly blemished by the time we hear the first cry. The difference between Abiola and the rest was that he was truly noble. He gave his life fighting in a peaceful manner for his mandate against the evil regime of Abacha . There is no greater love, Jesus said, that a man give his life for his fellowmen. That is why he deserved more than UNILAG. He had billions he could have thrown into a Nigeria-destroying fight, and frankly I am slightly mad that he didn't, but have realized it was not the nature of the man. Warning: let those who think the SW of today is there for them to use as their tool take note. It is not going to happen again - ever. ndu_chucks: I disagree with this. Jonathan gas benefited from this move by diverting attention away from his lack of tangible achievements, the Justice Salami saga, the N155billion debacle, Boko Haram, e.t.c. The SW leaders who have been his chief critics are now spending their time and energy on this Unilag issue.
Given the treatment of fuel subsidy protesters in Lagos and several other actions by GEJ, every UNILAG student should have written GEJ off already, if not, those students must be dullards.
lol at the above. You’ve forgotten that Nigerians have a very short memory. Prior to now, there have been massive corruption under every civilian government, yet each President was reelected. The electorate is not as sophisticated as those of western nations at the moment. At election time, if a candidate spends enough money to buy rice, clothes, gifts, e.t.c. for voters, the voters will not remember any massive corruption. More than 80% of the electorate is a not a University graduate and is unaware of these issues and the issues will not affect how they vote. Sad but true.
The only thing that will save us now is to get PDP out of office at all costs.
With this renaming, GEJ has succeeded in exposing SW leaders, with the exception of Tinubu who said GEJ’s action was welcome, as hypocrites. When OBJ took steps for eight years to wipe the name of Abiola out of the annals of our history with spite and contempt, these leaders including Afe Babalola did not see it fit to raise any objections, they are now screaming blue murder. SMH.
I would have been more impressed if the objections of the SW leaders were because MKO Abiola played a major role in the corruption and decay of Nigeria and does not merit UNILAG to be named after him. These complaints about the illegality of the renaming is dishonest at best. These critics have quickly forgotten that Otuoke and eight other villages got fresh varsities by executive fiat recently, only to have NASS ratification later. Why wouldn’t the same be true in the case of renaming Unilag?
The SW leaders should be bold enough to tell us the real reason for their objections. |

Yes, he is a schemer that much is clear now. But once you are outed as a schemer, your schemes become nothingness. The wind has blown, it is not that difficult to see the backside of the hen anymore! Tyche: People do underrate GEJ. It was not only luck/fate that got him to where he is now, he must have schemed his way through. The only problem is that he has failed to impact on the lives of many ordinary Nigerians esp those who braved alot of odds to vote him in. |

You and this sneaky, satirical comments. Whoever is taking this your "comment" seriously must have a blinder on. ndu_chucks: In an act which many believe is ill-timed, not well thought-out, illegal, and an attempt to divide the SW, GEJ has succeeded in changing the political game, albeit accidentally. All of a sudden, calls for the prosecution of fuel subsidy thieves have disappeared, the N155billion scandal, and several other national issues have been placed on the back burner and replaced by the "outrage" of renaming Unilag. Even Tinubu publicly announced that the renaming of Unilag was a welcome development, effectively silencing further opposition by SWers to GEJ's act.
Are we now seeing a GEJ who after seeming to have outsmarted Northern politicians and thieves, has now initiated his plans for the recapture of the SW by PDP? The whole thing seems accidental to be, but one thing seems certain, this man, GEJ, is one lucky fellow. |

Who is the quiet person you are refering to here? Abeg comot make I see front. A president and his incompetent assistants who take every adverse comment up the nose are not going to amount to much. Word. Ask yourself one question: Why is it that GEJ is always a maestro only when he seems to be playing the political game? When it comes to affecting the lifes of real Nigerians all we hear are he. .he. . he. . . . . . . Please don't bastardize the word genius for the world, afterall all knees are already bowing to your lord "GEJ". Genius ko, Genievive ni - so much pseudo-intellectuals floating around Nigeria. Beaf: It is important for GEJ's opponents to continue calling him names like "coward," "weakling," "retardeen" etc. It is only in Nigeria that a quiet person is regarded as foolish; this is despite the fact that quiet people are much more intelligent than the average person and the fact that 60% of geniuses are quiet.
It helps to be underestimated. |

Where are you acquiring all this mega-power for GEJ. There are rules beyond the presidency that governs universities. I don't doubt that a Nigerian leader, and in particular GEJ, could try firing and hiring university teachers, but that is really beyond anybody with something up there would do or should do. You are consistently suggesting that you don't know your rights. The presidency doesn't give the occupier of the office absolute powers - that is the beauty of a well-run, not a watered-down, democracy! coogar: the president won't consult his subjects on a matter like that. the office of the president pays the salaries of the university we are talking about. they can hire/fire the people you want him to discuss with. he can promote/demote the members of the university body. what the heck are you guys talking about? |

I had hoped not, but at least that further confirms what I have being saying about GEJ & his supporters for a while. On your repeated statement, I have no idea what you are talking about, but sure that you do. That should be good enough for you. Right? Beaf: Of course, I do. You over-inflate influence, bro. |
