May the Almighty continue to support Gov. Aregbesola in Osun State.

Despite the pitiable position of Osun among Nigerian States Aregbesola promised to make the state not only viable, but a leading state within Nigeria. The man is so hungry to make an impact, and has the vision to back it up.

It will not be perfect or even complete, but Gov. Aregbesola's approach to governance is purposeful, determined and genuine.

May success continue to follow his efforts, with the support of the populace.

http://www.osundefender.org/?p=32231
Government of the State of Osun has distributed over 100 Computer Tablets of Knowledge (Opon Imo), an initiative of the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led administration, to students for test-running, with a view to making adjustments where necessary.

The team of experts handling the project disclosed this at Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo last Friday during a sensitisation programme for the Senior Secondary School (SSS2) students of the school, who have been selected for the test-running of the computer tablets.

The computer tablets, which was designed to improve the learning among secondary school students and prepare them for external and internal examinations, was designed in the form of iPad and would be given to the students free-of-charge.

A member of the team, Mr Oyintiloye Olatunbosun, the Assistant Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, (Community Forum) in the Office of the Governor, who addressed the students, said that even though all students in SS1, SS2, and SS3 across the state would be given the tablets, the students of Ataoja School of Sciencehave been selected for the test-running, assuring the parents and students of other schools not to entertain any fear.

He said that after distributing the tablets to the students for test-running, they would be retrieved in the next two weeks, during which the students are expected to have used it both in school and at home and give feedback, including suggestion for improvement, where necessary.

According to him, since such project has never been embarked upon by any government, there are bound to be shortcomings and after suggestion might have been taken from the students and teachers who have used the tablets for test-running and all necessary adjustment are made, the project would then be launched and distributed to all students in the state.

He called on students to handle the computer tablets with care, both at home and in school, with a view to ensuring that the purposes of the project are not defeated.
Installed in each of the computer tablets are the soft copies of all the subjects being offered in secondary schools with different text books and lesson notes, as well as past questions of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), National Examination Council Examination (NECO), as well as Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Principal of the School, Mr AjidahunAdedayo, saluted Governor Aregbesola’s determination to ensure that students of the State of Osun are able to meet up with any students in the world, stressing that the Opon Imo initiative was a milestone that has never been achieved by any government.

He also appreciated the government for chosen his school as a pilot for the project, promising that everything would be done to ensure that the computer tablets are handled with care by the students, with a view to serving the purpose it is meant for.

This is an initiative? Really? What these kids, and tax-payers now need is for Government to spend already limited resources, not on IMPROVING EDUCATION ITSELF but purchasing Laptops for each and every student? So giving out about 100,000 tablets, bought with tax-payer money, is now considered an initiative?

How long is this "INITIATIVE" going to last?

I am 100% for improving our education system, and getting our students up to speed technology-wise, but this is no way to go about it, especially when we consider the resources are not unlimited. Purchasing computers for students in a crappy system will not do anything to actually improve the system. Only you will have students with expensive computers, still locked in to a crappy education system.

If we must introduce technology, states that have the funds are overdue for a library system. Studies from all over the world have shown that having well equipped libraries to cater to students of all levels, helps not only equip but motivate students.

I think a wiser initiative would have been to purchase these computers as desktops, for the school libraries.
This idea of handing tablet computers to the students, seems stup.id, to be honest.

Misplaced priority, confused set of leaders

What would student use computer tablets for in secondary school ?

What students would need would be a library with standard computer, renovate the schools to good standards etc not give each student a tablet.
Re: Osun Distributes Computer Tablets Of Knowledge For Test-running by koruji(m): 3:26am On Jun 12, 2012
Obviously you guys have not followed the history of the Opon Imo. It is an initiative alright, and that is the idea of an initiave - something new and never tried before, at least in this particular place.

And no, it is not just buying and handling tablets to the students. This particular ones are being designed specifically for the Osun State curriculum - as such it is not a regular tablet.

We'll see how it works out, and the state should be willing to adjust if necessary.

As for improving schools, the man has commenced the inspection of 170 mega- and modern schools being constructed across the state. He is not joking!!!

He also has a program to train up to 20,000 Osun State youths in ICT technology.

It may not all work out as planned, but that is why it is path-breaking. If it were obvious, and easy to do everyone should have done it. Constructive would also be a good thing to incorporate, but naysayers need to stay away.

Nobody can fault Gov. Aregbesola's vision here. He is not building 6 stadia for a state with no football team or N7 billion to demolish a hill - he is spending on education.

Go Preach that bull to someone else, will you? An Initiative of this sort has, to date, not benefitted our Education system. Osun is not the first state to attempt this. Many others, especially during the Yar adua years have attempted some of the same plans. What has become of those plans? And how many of them have positively impacted Educated in those states? I can confidently answer that question for you. NONE!!! Many of these have been temporary boosts for a handful, who at the end of the day have had to deal with the main reality, the education system remaining the same as it was before their receiving of these gadgets.
We have to remind ourselves here that this is tax-payer money being used here, and this ought to be used to re-build the education system as a whole, rather than purchase laptops/tablets to give out to students, who at the end of the day, need a good education system in place to help them make sense of these new gadgets and the power locked in them.
koruji:
We'll see how it works out, and the state should be willing to adjust if necessary.
I think we have seen about enough of these "initiatives" to realize this is definitely not the way around our problem.
What majority of these programs seem to be focused on doing, and continue to do, is seek ways to cut AROUND the major issue, slap a band aid, or more on the sores in our education system. The more we pretend another one of these will change things, the more valuable funds, and time we waste. The kids are not getting any younger, and their futures are not waiting for us to get things right first.
koruji:
As for improving schools, the man has commenced the inspection of 170 mega- and modern schools being constructed across the state. He is not joking!!!
Do you ever ask yourself, I mean before you post one of these lines of yours, whatever happened with the many mega/modern/ginormous plans of this sort in other states. Or are you one of those who believe the secret to success is in the doing the repeating the same old failed exercise, over and over, expecting a new outcome with each and every turn?

Nobody can fault Gov. Aregbesola's vision here. He is not building 6 stadia for a state with no football team or N7 billion to demolish a hill - he is spending on education.

There is nothing path-breaking about his attempts, or your attempts to blow air up his arse here.

Please always bear in mind that when Government embarks on these so-called "initiatives", the tax-payer pays. These Governors are not using their allowances for these. It is money from the state that is applied. And if nothing substantial is gained at the end of it all, the people suffer it. This Governor, and others, will get his pay check, allowances and extras at the end of the day.

I can fault his vision, because, like the one's you claim maybe building 6 stadia for a state with no football team or N7 billion to demolish a hill , this 'initiative' seems to be born of a lack of ideas on how to best tackle the problems in our education system. I mean one can also blindly argue that the 6 stadia Governor is spending on improving sports in the state, and someone will tell us that too. But we all know that is crock, and so is your claim that spending state money buying a tablet for each student is spending money on improving education.
I don't understand why most every one of these governors keep coming up with about the same plan whenever it comes to tackling problems in Education, or whatever other sector. Building of classes (how many of them are even in near good shape to date since we have been reading of governors building new class units all over this country), distributing computers purchased with tax-payer money, distributing free textbooks, buying new school uniforms, building yet another privately run school (primary, secondary, university) only go to painting a new color over the problem, and not tackling it. And this has been revealed time and time again, as the indicators still point to a system still in decay.

Akanbi why are you talking like this, knowing secondary school students, it only take a matter of months before they damage the system. Some might actually sell it or tamper with it.

A much better initiative which would last longer after the current crop of student pass out would be a very good library full of computers to meet the student needs.

This tablet thing is just not it. To me it more or less a toy for the student.

Re: Osun Distributes Computer Tablets Of Knowledge For Test-running by Nobody: 5:03pm On Jun 12, 2012
Hmmmm not bad I see it as a form of e-learning one major suggestion should be these tablets should be customized in a way students can't play games with them, watch movies etc. Music is allowed and when browsing certain websites are prevented from opening. Hence the aim would be deafeated.

Indeed, if these tablets are connected at cheap price they become useful tools in acquiring knowledge. We are living in information age. It is a very good thing but with some hurdles.

Are you saying kwoledge is not enhanced with computer and internet?

There is a Federal government College in my time with all the ss3
students having a computer each and 80% of them scored more than 240 in JAMB.

Definitely this cannot all be ascribed to internet but it definitely played a role.

in developed world internet connection is taken for granted like air.

I think its a really good inititiative. Last year a small linux based computer called raspberry pie was introduced in the UK to teach school (level 5) students how to programme which I think is something close to what Governor Aregbesola has done, less its one of those govenrment schemes used as avenue to embezzle money (hopefully not).
