You mean you can't see why GEJ renaming UNILAG clifford orji university would bring down his government. You do know who "clifford orji" was right? Beaf: Dude got jokes! |
Now you are getting extreme about it. Of course, if GEJ named it "clifford orji university" it will not only dent the reputation of the school, it will lead to the collapse of the the GEJ presidency itself. I am sure you can figure out why the latter would be the case! coogar: OAU was university of ife before federal government changed it to OAU in 1987. |
How time flies. Posted this when the flame of hope, and the idea of a real "transformation" was still burning in my heart. Sigh! Another would-be Nigerian Messiah gone into the history books. |
The difference between leading and dealing. Period. Beaf: MKO has been rightly honoured. Why some cannot swallow their bile is perplexing to say the least. |
Years of military rule has done bad things to Nigerians. President GEJ is president of Nigeria, not c-in-c of Nigeria. He is c-in-c of the armed forces, not Nigeria - big difference. Last time I checked UNILAG was not a military institution. Less emphasize on the "power", more on the "people", please. coogar: unfortunately, jonathan is the c-in-c! |
OK, point taken. Although I do believe my interpretation was correct, we 'll let sleeping dogs sleep. PapaBrowne: First I agree with majority of your speech except for some few areas. Secondly, I didn't cast any aspersions on any ethnicities. The last I checked the South West is a geographical location populated by a myraid of ethnicities. So which one in particular did I cast an aspersion upon? |
He doesn't control jack. He has authority given to him according to the constitution. He is not omni-Nigerian, just our representative. Look at the our very closely - that means we must be carried along if he wants our cooperation and praise. That he became president doesn't mean he owns or controls Nigeria. He controls that part of it which the constition allows him - and if he misuses his fleeting authority then he should not expect to be honored in return. coogar: he doesn't have to build it to control it....he's the commander-in-chief. |
Well, what did I expect? I guess GEJ now has the right to rename your child or wife or girlfriend because the FG gives you money to be their mouthpiece on NL. When people appointed to represent a larger group begin to consider themselves "owners" they enter an endless cycle of alienating those they represent. What is their value then? Zero, zip, nada. Their egos may be soothed, but they will never know the satisfaction of true people-acceptance. Besides, power is so fleeting. Beaf: GEJ can do anything he likes with the name. Unilag belongs to the FG. |
Can you for once make your point without displaying your god-view of President GEJ. For the upteenth time, GEJ cannot do "anything he wishes". There will always be consequences for anything anybody does, talkless of someone who is supposed to represent the desires and hopes of 160 million. GEJ didn't build University of Lagos, and in 3 years time he will lose the power to do anything like this. That is not to far from here - just look at how fast the last one year disappeared into history. Beaf: GEJ can do anything he wishes with the name of |

Well, Ileke-Idi, you should idolize Prof. Soyinka, if you are into idolizing, that is ![]() Ileke-IdI: |
I will take Prof. Soyinka's word over yours anyday. As I said on another thread it is neither snobishness nor lack of consultation - although the latter is part of it. The real issue is that of the "curse of the familiar" and attachment. Many generations of students and teachers are deeply invested in the name "University of Lagos". This is unlike the sparingly used and forgotten airports and stadia, which some may actually consider more befitting, but have little sentimental value. GEJ has just nullified decades of emotional investment. In addition, like Prof. Soyinka I greatly doubt President GEJ's motive. President GEJ has shown himself to be a calculating political operator, who is extremely vindictive and passive-aggressive to boot. Even if his motives were pure, and I strongly doubt it, this token gesture earns him no marks in the SW as long as he continues his open and hidden marginalization agenda. Please understand that because the FG gives your child a lifetime schorlaship doesn't give him the right to rename your child any time he wants. Also, what is the FG if not a representative of our opinions, thoughts, and desires. When the head of that institution begins to consider our opinions of no consequence, he also becomes of no consequence in our eyes - I know that is not the case in Nigeria, but that is the way it should be. And please refrain from casting such a wide net on the popularity of Prof. Soyinka's ideas. We all know Nigerians of today have a rather peculiar disdain for deep thought or what you call "elitism". It is this disdain that makes us easy-prey to the deceivers and pseudo-intellectuals, selling shoe-less stories without substance. There is nothing elitist in Prof. Soyinka's thoughts, life and words. odumorun 1: I strongly disagree with Wole Soyinka on this. |
The wise one has spoken. SW'ers do not want something just because it benefits them. It must be properly done, and the motives behind it are crucial. |
What you are seeing is not what your provocative title suggests. What you are seeing in the protests can be described as the "curse of the familiar". A large number of people have an attachement to the name "University of Lagos", and it is inconsiderate of the president to rename it without consultation, even the VC did not know about it - we are not running a military government here. The same cannot be said about places like an airport - few people, especially those who rarely use it, have attachments to the name on an airport carries. Not the same for a university. Besides, SW'ers do not all sleep with their heads in the same direction. The variety of opinion is a mark of SW'ers. So, because some people protested does not immediately lead to your jump-the-gun conclusion about "Most SW'ers". I personally have no opinion on the change of name. I do have doubts about President GEJ's motive, but that is based on his behavior over the last few months. He, like his predecessors, are only after political gain - unfortunately this gesture doesn't do him any real favors in the SW - away with token gestures while you deliver "Coastal Patrol" to your ex-kinsman militants. It is this kind of behavior that reveals where the man is headed - a brutal dictator if Nigerians don't hold him to account each and every day. Finally, you said MAU doesn't sound good - well that is only temporary, it is new. I recall that many of then students of OAU did not like the renaming of University of Ife to OAU, but what do you know, that name is now carried proudly everywhere as in "Oba Awon University" I foresee the students of MAU carrying this university name with pride as in "Mother of All Universities" a few years hence. Meanwhile, please stop casting aspersions on ethnic nationalities as if your ethnic group is any better. PapaBrowne: Most South Westerners, young and old likewise are criticizing the renaming of UNILAG. I personally don't like the change in name. First because MAU just doesn't sound right. Secondly, I really don't know why but it just isn't cool. |
MKO: President (post-humous) Get it? It is symbolic, a recognition of what he achieved, and our regret at wasting more than a decade and badly factionalized nation because we didn't. It is called innovative thinking. salaksmana: He remained "president elect" till death, what is wrong with Aregbe. Ok we agree to include him |
To all those condemning Aregbesola I say you need to learn to think through what you hear or read. Our current, herd-like thought process is leading Nigeria nowhere, and you would think that people would realize that our basic problem is a lack of deep reflection. The logic of Aregbesola's proposal is sound: 1)If Abiola won a free-and-fair election; 2)The election was illegally cancelled; 3)The man died (actually was killed) before he had the chance to actualize his mandate; 4)If we all recognize the validity of his mandate, then we can declare him an Ex-President posthumously. You would think from some of the assinine comments that I have read here that things are never done post-humously. In reality, we make awards and give out positions post-humously all the time, without "requiring the recipient to fulfill protocol" at all costs. It is symbolic, and speaks to how much we wished we had honored that person when they were alive. Can you imagine someone calling the statement "treasonable"? No wonder Nigerians will likely remain in the bondage of 419 rulers for ages to come. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Gov. Aregbesola said. Afterall, this is a nation where political thieves continue to roam our streets, receiving pensions after overthrowing our legitimate governments, stealing votes and all manner of evil that ensures that a nation will never measure up to its peers. This does not mean that everything Aregbesola says or proposes would be correct, but if you are paying good attention to his thought processs and motives you will understand why he says what he says. The sad thing about Nigeria is that this is the kind of deep, non-conventional thinking that we need to change our rotten system. Gov. Aregbesola, please carry on - nothing do you. |
You are either forgetful, missing crucial information or . . . Did you forget that Baba Suwe said the NDLEA actually flushed his stomach with pressurized water? Yet nothing. Knowing the extent of corruption in our institutions and the power-hungriness of those at the helm I would place more truth in that statement by Baba Suwe than the NDLEA stories. DonId: To be candid, I thought Baba Suwe was innocent till I watched UK border force on zone reality where a man lived on soda for 43 days after the same machine detected drugs in his stomach. I was shocked cos the man excreted his after so long after smelling fried chicken, now I know if he had been kept longer he would have excreted all the drugs he had in his body. Baba Suwe only got away because this Naija and he is a celebrity |
Exactly, he doesn't understand that he is opening up the NDLEA to a defamation lawsuit, which would be won by Baba Suwe if the judge is not one of those compromised ones. ~Bluetooth: |
Thank you. Nigeria, like I said in an earlier reply, is deeply screwed. Every arm of our administration is populated by people who display pedestrian reasoning abilities. As long as they cannot see what is open to the rest of the world, we are going nowhere fast. Sam_Ikenna: Sometimes Nigeria disgusts me. It digusts me because even the smallest thing is seen either through politics or ethnic lens. |
Nigeria is truly screwed when somebody who claims to be all about science, like you, reads this article and come up with a statement like the below. Quite interesting: "proof exists beyond doubt" indeed. The man himself testifies to not being an expert, and going extra-judicial on Baba Suwe. He called a radiologist - yeah, like he/she was going to contradict them. Why don't they have a true radiologist at the airport if detecting drugs with x-ray machine is there main job. Beaf: Damning stuff! |
PDP and the art of BS. People that have failed their states, and continue to fail the entire nation talking from the behind. Chief, wey our federal roads? |
Where is Mr. Tranformation now? |
It is indeed sad to see someone promise so much and then do a 180 degree on us. He just seems completely unaware or uncaring about the expectations of the average Nigerian. I do not know what gives them the air of invicibility once they get into Aso rock. Gbawe: The mediocrity who never sought power yet inherited it in the 'luckiest' of fashion will never understand the saying "power is transient". If you are a clueless individuals without any problem-solving talent, what will you do with important office if not use it to make a fool of yourself as we are seeing? |
Leave GEJ alone. The guy thinks being in Aso Rock makes him a god or some imperial majesty of the flies. He and is corruption-ridden oligarchy will have pepper rubbed in their greedy eyes. |
I no fit laugh I beg. Delivered or Deceived Awon ole. |
Don't!!!!!!! He has said "humbler" things in the past only to turn around and tear the citizen to pieces like a lion handling meat. In the run-up to the subsidy fiasco the man went to church, spoke sweet words like "I will not impose hardship on Nigerians". What did he give us afterwards? Increased petrol prices, non-existent palliatives, and 19 lives savagely lost in the process. Dictators always start by wearing sheeps clothing while they are ravenous wolves inside. He has shown his colors in the last year or so. Nigerians must be determined to watch him and hand foot until they see real evidence of someone who has the people, and not power, in his heart. So, far it is a fail. 01 : 08: |
You just keep hating, and let D'banji keep making his dough. Besides these are the kind of stories we want to be hearing about Nigeria abroad, not the shameless Ibori "I pleaded guilty to save Nigeria's reputation crap". cap28: crap as usual- he can only impress 15 year old school girls who dont know any better. |
And it is shameful for a party to hold the center all these years plus almost three-quarters of the states, and only be able to point to two oil-money bloated states as evidence of work-in-progress. There is no doubt that ACN represents a better working party for Nigeria than the useless PDP. ACN is not perfect, but can be perfected. Fashola is achieving what the FG could not achieve in 50+ years of nationhood - twice over. Eko Ile: What have they commissioned lately? |
[One Lere Olayinka (Spokesman for the Embattled PDP Vice Chairman South West Segun Oni) and Olugobi Oluseyi(PDP lie Piece on Facebook ) Wrote these on their Facebook Wall:- "For EIGHT Years that Gomina Aregbesola of Osun State was d Lagos State Commissioner for Works under Tinubu, he was addressed as Engr Rauf Aregbesola. But records from COREN show that he was never an Engineer. Reason he said he should be addressed as OGBENI when he became Osun Governor! Ondo State Youthsforum is already challenging Gomina Raufu Aregbesola to make public his Mechanical Engineering and COREN certificates, NSE Fellowship number]" |

Remeber the world cup or something when the politicians made the flight but the Eagles didn't. It is happening again in a slightly different way. They don't really care about NIGERIA - just their political ambitions and pockets. Nobody!!! http://www.osundefender.org/?p=30880 FOLLOWING Sunday’s drug incident at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos, which forced the cancellation of the Iberia Airliner that the Super Eagles players were boarding to Madrid en route Lima for Wednesday’s international friendly against Peru, it was double pain for the team as it missed it connecting flight from Madrid to Lima. |
To win what? In Edo? Are u silly? Jeel: Pdp is still the most likely party to win any day |
