Vo:who is sponsoring you
me: i said my dad

Vo:what does he do
me:he his a chattered accountant and he works with lagos state ministry of finance and he is also into real estate investment

vo:when did you finish high sch
me:i said 2010

vo:what have you been doing
me:i did my ND from 2012-2014,did my IT in an engineering firm which i was suppose to stop by 2015 but i was retained and that where i work till now.

vo:how many schools
me:3 then i name them(university of central oklahoma, cleveland state university and of course southwest minnesota state university that am going to)

vo:why did you choose this sch
me:: i was fascinated by the ongoing research in the mathematic department more than the others , since that is the area i will specialize in, i got interested and applied.I saw papers regarding Applied Mathematics that covers a wide range of topics in mathematical physics and mathematical modelling. I also seen research on Pure Mathematics involving geometric, analytic and algebraic methods in group theory……. Since I am undergrad some of the Content are advance but its good to know these research are done in the school which will be useful to me when I get there

vo:what do you intend to do with this course
me:i intend to work as a data analyst in a telecom company due to rapid increase in number of mobile phone users in nigeria.my skills and experience will be of high demand in helping in analysing sales report and doing market research so the company can become more productive and make better business decision.

vo:what are you doing now
me:i work at engineering firm where i service air condition, generator and refridgerator

Vo:so have you tried to apply to a university in nigeria
me: was not sure if i said yes or no but i remember saying there is too much strike in nigeria school and the school curriculum is not good that they focus on theory unlike us schools that has a good curriculum and international degree from us would give me edge over other when i apply for jobs in nigeria(was not expecting this question so my reply was not smooth i lost balance for here).

vo:she was saying something you will need this bla bla bla
me:for my mind i was like olorun pls dont let me receive this blue paper again

then she hand over the paper and said i can pick up by thursday
was so happy my file and passport photo fell down had to pick it up fast.

I chose to study mathematics because I want to have more knowledge in the modeling aspect of mathematics which can be used to solve real life problems such as helping many companies minimize their cost and maximize profits and I believe having a degree in mathematics will be a great asset in starting my career here in Nigeria as I will be able to work in any leading companies like Nigeria bottling company, Nestlé....

You may not use it the same way I wrote it. Try to get the key points and develop it on ur own and other people's opinion is welcome. My 2 kobo

pls gurus in the house help me evaluate my pre-interview transcript.going to southwest minnesota state university for bachelor degree in mathematics.

vo:how did you get to know about this school
me i got to know about this school through my dad friend doing his doctorate degree in the school after which i went online and got information about the school and i applied.

vo:why this sch
me:i chose this school because it has an outstanding mathematics curriculum where mathematics major minimum number of semesters hours is increased and the maximum limit is removed this which would allow me take more core courses in calculus and analysis.and taking more courses in cal and analysis would prepare me towards a career in becoming a data analyst and working in a telecomm company when i return after my studies.

vo:why mathematics
me: i chose to study mathematics because i want to have a career in data analyst and a degree in mathematics would equip me with analytical and problem solving skills to work in a telecomm company when i return after my studies.

vo:what would this course do for you
me:this course would equip me with analytical and problem solving skills to work in a telecomm company when i return after my studies.

vo:what do you intend to do after your studies:

I see you're trying to use a different approach albeit this new one has a number of errors. First, you'll end up revealing too much and will consequently shoot yourself in the foot. If you've got plans of changing school/course of study, it's best you keep that to yourself. You being interviewed for SWMSU and you're talking about UT Austin. The followup question you envisaged is where the VO will rope you. While it might indeed save you some dough, whose gonna pay for the remaining three years? How will you sustain the supposed cost effectiveness since you've changed schools? I'll suggest you keep your story straight with respect to your school and course of study as you did in your first interview. Your generic response to the third question was probably what turned the VO off. You can say little (1-2 Unique points max.) and still sound convincing. Finally, I don't know how reputable the school is.

thank efiosk wud keep to mathematics and work on d third question and others.was confused cos have been trying to prevent second denial

In an ideal world all these pre this and that is ok but we are not in ideal world ... all this is very hard to sell because why are you not going directly for what you want.... why a pre engineering? . Engineering is a direct first degree unlike medicine so why pre ....

What was your SAT SCORE.... if money is a problem, why not focus or go for lesson and try to score high on SAT. There are loads of funding for good undergard students or get directly into an engineering program

Alternatively focus on d school strength and on mathematics in an interview... Don't distract with pre this and that ...especially saying pre engineering. Loads of people enter engineering directly . For me it make you look lazy or unserious saying u need the visa to then prepare you for engineering.

Instead sell mathematics and what it can do for u .....blc remember if u cant change then u end up with mathematics as loads of pre med end up with biology degree when med don't work out

I did ACT and TOEFl and scored 18 and 70 respectively. will stick to mathematics as u advised.

pls house am preparing for my interview next two weeks after my first denial which i posted on this thread.i need review regarding this pre-interview prreparation.am going for bachelor degree in mathematics(its a pre-engineering course which i would transfer after the first session) at southwest minnesota state university.

vo:how do you know about the school
me:well i got to know about the school through my dads friend who's doing his doctorate degree in the school after which i went online and make a finding about the school and i applied

vo:why did you choose swmsu:i chose swmsu because it offers a pre-engineering course which would give me the opportunity of transfering to university of texas austin being it partnered school.and transfering to university of texas austin which is known for having one of the best petroleun engineering program in us would equip me with unique skills and experience in oil industry and make me be able o contribute my own quota to the development of oil sector in nigeria because my country is really facing economic hardship due to fall in oil price and poor state of refinery.

vo:why dont you head to university of texas direct
me:because i want to have a cost effective start to my degree and it would save me a lot of money around $15k

vo:why mathematics
me:well mathematics is actually pre-engineering programm that would prepare me into college of engineering and enable be become a good and sound petroleum engineer and work in an oil refinery company which would give me the opportunity of contributing to the development of oil industry when i return after my studies

vo:what would this course do for you
me:it would prepare me into college of engineering and enable me become a good and sound petroleum engineer and work in oil refinery company.

pls i need suggestion could remember methodjim, darefadi, ashbammy, mekurexx comment on my first transcript.

sorry for the denial. Book another date if you can. Then this time you have to make the VO know that you are an intending student.

1. you dont need to say your dad's friend introduced you to the international officer. yes you can say he told you about the school, then on your own you went through google search engine and got all info about the school and contacted the admission officer in the person of ...... and filed your application.

2. why did you choose this school. pls forget about ratio, ranking, whether is cheap or not. talk more on the course curriculum as it suits your interest and if possible relate it or link it to how it will benefit you in proferring solutions to the challenges nigeria is facing today when you come back. Search for an organization in nigeria that is in line with what you are going to study and tell them when you come back that is where you would want to work.

Please this is an overview try to be succint in your speech and pray very hard.

One question they ll ask you is what has changed in your profile, so be prepared to answer that.

thank you for the breakdown of possible causes.can I pm you

Mekurexx:
You said you went through nairaland transcripts and you still talked about student to faculty ratio? c'mon! that is weak. You should have a more passionate response to that question, and well talking about how affordable the school is, most people apply to schools that match their budget, so talking about how affordability is not necessary(my opinion), cuz I'm sure you must have applied to other ''affordable schools'' btw what program are you going for?

am going for bachelor degree in mathematics

When does you school resume. U can evulate everything and see if u want to go back. If u do just get more in depth answers ..prepare this time not just reading NL ..... all depend on you if u want to go again
If u want something never give up on your dream.

my school resumes by 22 of august but I feel I should defer to next semester cos I read somewhere if someone reapply immediately that chances are slim.thanks for the support

Sorry to read this...maybe its becoming harder. That been said this above wasnt a very good answer.

Most undergrad do research conferences so its most likely all ur other schools do it. Then to ur next reason and next faculty ratio...most schools have good ratio . So nothing stood out to make it memorable.

.next time stay away from generic answers and make it unique. U have the first 10 second to make a good impression so if they are now asking 1 or 2 questions then its key that u are on point from beggining. All the best

thank you for the support

visa delayed on Tuesday. my first experience about visa interview
well while on the que I was so confident cos my thinking was me wey don read nairaland transcript tire for more than 4 years no shaking. when interview start I dey see blue paper all through and no single white my heart one fall.there was this particular vo in window 3 the guy just dey drill applicant wey come in place and I was praying God should not make me goto window 3 but eventually was called to window 3.so here is my transcript.

note:I was really confident when I was talking and I did not stutter

vo:Gud morning
me:morning

vo:pass passport and 120 and sevis
me: I did

vo:how do u get to know about the school
me:I said I got to know about the school through my dad friend who is doing his PhD in the school and he also introduced me to Donald Robertson the director for international students services

vo: how many school do u applied to
me: I name the three schools

vo: so why did you choose southwest Minnesota state university over others

me: I said it organizes an undergraduate research conference annually this which would challenge me to develop my self academically so I can showcase my intellectual ability.and also the school tuition and living expenses are affordable compared to other school and it has a good students to faculty ratio which is 16:1.

the next thing was blue paper and one story wey I no hear self.when he stopped asking question and want to bring out paper I tot it wud be white cos it was just three questions which I answered well to my understanding.

Nb:he only looks at me when he ask questions after that he face his computer and start typing while I speak

there was another person that was denied too on NL on Tuesday after 2 questions but people didn't believe him when he posted his transcript.

typing using a bad phone so sorry for any errors. ur advice is highly needed cos I want to defer to next semester.
