Hamas was hoping for regional war. Their calculations was Hezbollah and other Iran proxy fighters in the regoin will join the war but when US sent two war ships in matters of day to the region, everyone involve do their calculations and decides involvement might signal their end. Even Hamas now will be full of regret cos the destruction in Gaza will take decades to reconstruction and Isreal will hunt Hamas for years and that will reduce their ability to govern. Before October 7, Hamas freely govern Gaza but not anymore. They are hiding in their tunnel, scared of drone attack.

Do you know there are different levels and types of war? Don't compare conventional warfare with unconventional war against terrorists.
Israel defeated the Arabs in a conventional warfare when the Arab nations proclaimed ceasefire when they realized tat Israel had destroyed their Airforce systems and ground defence capabilities etc.
Hamas is a terror group and they fight in splinter groups. You have to keep searching and hunt them down one after the other, from street to street. They are not like a regular organized army that would declare ceasefire when they realize that their defence systems have been destroyed by the enemy.
Hamas does not have an official, regular barracks where their troops live or where they keep their weapons or armoury. They mingle with civilian population, so it takes time to wipe them out
Israel has the capability to wipe off the whole of Gaza in a week if not for the civilians. They have been holding fire and allowing civilians to evacuate and move to the southern Gaza for more than a month now. They also called for evacuation of the hospitals. If they did not want to care for the civilian lives, they would have finished off the whole place.
