Politics / Obidient Movement Not Domiciled In Any Political Party, Says Peter Obi by Kuginzi: 8:39pm On Jun 06
By Ignatius Igwe

The presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has said that the Obidient Movement is beyond a political party and cannot be cubbyhole into one.

He said the membership of the Obidient Movement cuts across the political parties, sex, tribe, religion, or geopolitical area, adding that the driving force of the body is rescuing and building a new Nigeria that is POssible.

I like to categorically state that the Obidient Movement is not directorate of any particular political party. Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement.

"I like to categorically state that the Obidient Movement is not a directorate in any particular political party. Any individual or individuals claiming to be leaders of this non-existent directorate are simply not members of the broader Obidient Movement,” he said on his X late Wednesday.

“There may be a youth mobilization directorate in political parties, but the Obidient Movement is far beyond a particular political party. The Obidient Movement is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends traditional political, religious, and ethnic affiliations.

“It is not domiciled within any particular party or headquartered in any particular part of the country. Its membership spans across Africa and the globe, comprising individuals from various backgrounds, including rural communities, and public, private, and corporate entities, united by a shared vision for a New and better Nigeria. Guided by the principles of adaptive and transformative change, progress, discipline, and democratic values, the Obidient Movement advocates for fairness, equity, inclusivity, and justice.

"It is committed to a strictly accountable and responsible code of government. Our members are committed to contributing to the realization of a better future for Nigeria through the New Nigeria project, anchored on loyalty, integrity, and democratic values.

“The Obidient Movement seeks to foster positive change through a commitment to integrity, honesty, and accountability, rejecting deceitful behaviours.

“We serve as a beacon of hope for a reimagined Nigeria, where leadership is grounded in character, capacity, competence, compassion and the well-being of all citizens.

“Let this serve as a clarification that the Obidient Movement operates independently of any political party, and its membership is not limited to any particular affiliation.”

Religion / I Struggled With Pornography – Pastor Isaac Oyedepo by Kuginzi: 10:43am On May 18
Son of Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church, Isaac, has confessed to struggling with pornography at a point in his life.

Isaac disclosed that he got indulged in Pornography during a trip to an European country.

Featuring on a podcast “Confession Box,” Isaac said he overcame through the help of God.

According to Isaac: “My confessions are good ones that will help people. I struggled with pornography before.

“I remembered how it started, we travelled to one country and I was meant to be in the room alone, I switched on the TV and that’s it.

“But God brought me out of it very quickly. A lot of people still struggle with it and I think of somebody who had struggled with it and had walked up to me and told me how to come out, I would have come out quickly.

“I think people feel there are things we shouldn’t talk about, but today there are some pastors and church members still struggling with it.

“You may be anointed, seeing signs and wonders but it does not mean you are standing right.

“There is this old saying that if it’s working it means you are standing right but I found out that it’s not always the case. There are times I found out I wasn’t right, but grace and mercy found me.

“For the sake of someone who is genuine in the congregation, God can bypass you to meet the person; this is my confession.”

Politics / Minimum Wage: Labour Dumps Negotiation Over Fg’s N48,000 Proposal by Kuginzi: 9:41am On May 16
Deborah Tolu-Kolawole and Nathaniel Shaibu

Negotiation has broken down, N48,000 amounts to wage reduction – Unions

The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Wednesday dumped the minimum wage negotiation after the Federal Government offered to pay N48,000, a figure far below the N615,00 the unions were demanding as the new national minimum wage.

After abandoning the session, the furious labour leaders summoned an emergency press conference where they vented their displeasure with the offer, describing it as ‘an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerian workers.’

This was the second time in two weeks that the negotiation had run into trouble. The last session, held on April 29, deadlocked after organised labour insisted on N615,000 minimum wage.

The Federal Government disagreed with labour’s demand, which it deemed unreasonable.

However, the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, explained that the amount was arrived at after analysing the current economic situation and the needs of an average Nigerian family of six.

Rationalising the N615,000 demand, the labour leader stated, “Living wage is such that will, at least, keep you alive. It is not a wage that will make you poorer and poorer. It is not a wage that will make you borrow to go to work. It is not a wage that will lead you to be in the hospital every day because of malnutrition. For that living wage, we have tried to look at N615,000.

"Let me give you a breakdown of how we arrived at that figure. We have housing and accommodation of N40,000. We asked for electricity of N20,000 — of course, that was before the current tariff increase. Nobody can spend this amount currently. We have a utility that is about N10,000. We looked at kerosene and gas, that is about N25,000 to N35,000.

"We looked at food for a family of six. That is about N9,000 in a day. For 30 days, that is about N270,000. Look at medical. With the N50,000 provided, there will be no surgery or whatever.

“For clothing, we looked at N20,000. For education, N50,000. I don’t know about those who tried to put their children in private schools, they will not be able to cope with this amount. We also have sanitation of N10,000.

"I think where we have another bulk of the money is transportation. This is because the workers stay on the fringes and because of the cost of petrol, which amounted to N110,000.

“That brought the whole living wage to N615,000, and I want anyone to subject this to further investigation and find out whether there will be any savings when you pay somebody at this rate,’’ the NLC president explained.

But speaking at the press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, hours after the stalemate, Ajaero disclosed that, in contrast to the N48,000 offer made by the Federal Government, the organised private sector proposed an initial offer of N54,000.

He blamed the government and the OPS for the breakdown in negotiation, saying, “Despite earnest efforts to reach an equitable agreement, the less than reasonable action of the government and the organised private sector has led to a breakdown in negotiations.”

He further said, “The Government’s proposal of a paltry N48,000 as the minimum wage not only insults the sensibilities of Nigerian workers but also falls significantly short of meeting our needs and aspirations.

Though it is worth noting that even the least paid workers in the private sector receive N78,000 as clearly stated by the OPS, highlighting the stark disparity between the proposed minimum wage and prevailing standards further demonstrating the unwillingness of employers and the government to faithfully negotiate a fair national minimum wage for workers in Nigeria.’’

He accused the government of failing to provide data to support its offer, noting that this undermined the credibility of the negotiation.

"Furthermore, the government’s failure to provide substantiated data to support their offer exacerbates the situation. This lack of transparency and good faith undermines the credibility of the negotiation process and erodes trust between the parties involved.

"As representatives of Nigerian workers, we cannot in good conscience accept a wage proposal that would result in a reduction in income for federal-level workers who are already receiving N30,000 as mandated by law, augmented by Buhari’s (former President Muhammadu Buhari) 40 per cent peculiar allowance (N12,000) and the N35,000 wage award, totalling N77,000 only.

"Such a regressive step would undermine the economic well-being of workers and their families and is unacceptable in a national minimum wage fixing process.”

Politics / Nigeria Is A Complex Country, But Not Difficult To Rule – Obasanjo by Kuginzi: 9:43pm On May 12
Former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has said despite that Nigeria is a complex country it is not too difficult to govern.

Obasanjo while commissioning presidential lodge inside Osun state Government House, Oke-Fia, Osogbo alongside Governor Ademola Adeleke and former governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola on Sunday, May 12, noted that governance is easy when leaders are honest with their conscience.

He said: “With my experience, Nigeria is a complex country but Nigeria is not a difficult country to rule, maybe one can also say the same that Osun state is a complex state but Osun State is not a difficult state to rule.

“You have to be honest with your conscience, with the people and with your God. You have to be a man of character and attributes that everybody will see that Ademola Adeleke, when he sees opportunity to dance, he would dance but is a man of integrity, honesty and hardwork, it is very important! When light comes, darkness vanishes.”

He also declared that Adeleke is his dancing partner any day because he has proven to the world that he is happy and also very hardworking governor.

He advised Adeleke that, “You are working on roads, don’t joke with it because when we make necessary provision for the people to have jobs and they will work. Many Yoruba people want to work but what is impeding that is the road to ply. When we provide wherewithal for them they would work. I will plead with you to continue with that.”

Earlier, Adeleke explained that the VIP lodge was abandoned after the administration of Rauf Aregbesola who left it at 35 percent completion.

“However, work commenced on the project three months ago and now it is completed. This lodge can accommodate 5 dignitaries with their team conveniently at a time.”

Politics / FAAC: We Can’t Continue Using Bayelsa Money To Develop Other States – Diri by Kuginzi: 9:27pm On May 12
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has said the country’s “lopsided” federalism practice has hindered the development of states, calling for a review of revenue derivation formula in line with the practice of fiscal federalism.

Diri, who queried the existing practice where resource-endowed states in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta, get 13 percent as monthly allocation from their resources, insisted that it was wrong to describe Bayelsa as insolvent and unable to exist without monthly federal allocation while its resources were being expropriated to Abuja and shared to other states in the country.

Speaking over the weekend in Houston, Texas, when Ijaws in the United States of America and Canada conferred on him the award of “Icon of Unity and Social Justice” as part of the three-day 2024 convention organized by Ijaw National Congress (INC)-Americas, Diri appreciated the organisers for upholding the Ijaw tradition and culture even in the diaspora.

Former Nigerian first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan; Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri; as well as renowned author and Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama kingdom, King Bubaraye Dakolo, were honoured.

Diri said: “The leadership of the Niger Delta has been with the Ijaws over the years. Now it looks like we are getting tired. But we should not. We have to continue with our leadership role while galvanising support from our neighbours and brothers in the region.

"The Niger Delta is an area that should be better than it is if we were allowed to use our resources for our development. Since I arrived this country, what crossed my mind has been how Bayelsa would be if we practised true federalism whereby we get 100 per cent of our revenue from oil and gas and not 13 per cent as it is today. Maybe we would have had one small Houston in Yenagoa.

"You cannot take away the resources in my state and the internally generated revenue that would have accrued to us and expropriate it in the name of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). Every month end, the 36 states in the country gather in Abuja to share resources accruing from my state and they still come back to insult us that our state is insolvent.

"I have never seen anywhere in the world where the essence of the FAAC is to share revenue only from oil and gas. What about the revenue from other mineral resources like gold? Why are they not also shared? This is the naked truth,” he said.

He urged them not to allow the fire of Ijaw nationalism that has been ignited to extinguish and ensure that the annual event was sustained while promising the support of his administration.

Politics / Wike, Not Atiku, Frustrated Peter Obi Out Of PDP – Paul Ibe by Kuginzi: 4:59pm On May 12
By Seun Opejobi

Paul Ibe, the spokesperson of the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has disclosed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, was instrumental in the exit of Peter Obi from the party.

Ibe said Atiku wanted the PDP to zone the 2023 presidential ticket to the Southeast but Wike worked against it.

Obi was the vice presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2019 presidential election but dumped the party for the Labour Party, LP, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

He later became a force in the last general election, securing over six million votes.

Since the PDP and LP lost to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 election, the leading opposition party has yet to resolve its internal crisis.

However, Ibe said Atiku was ready to zone the PDP presidential ticket to the Southeast.

In an interview on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On podcast, Ibe said Wike frustrated the move to zone PDP’s ticket to the Southeast.

He said: “Atiku did not force Peter Obi out of the party, Wike was instrumental in the exit of Obi because Wike had promoted the zoning of the presidency to the south.

“Atiku Abubakar had said that he was prepared to get himself off the ticket if the party zoned the ticket to the Southeast.

"Wike frustrated that effort because he believed that if it was zoned to the south, not the southeast, he would be in the best position to be able to get the ticket.”

Religion / Sad How Churches Spring Up Just For Money – Yola Catholic Bishop by Kuginzi: 3:24pm On May 12
By Jim Ochetenwu

The Catholic Bishop of Yola, Stephen Mamza, has taken a swipe at mushroom churches springing up with no apparent spiritual intent but for commercial quest.

The Bishop who is the immediate Adamawa State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, said during a special Mass in Yola that, “Even the holy spirit will find it difficult to count the churches in Yola. Churches are set up today just for business.”

He said in Nigeria today, people just want to become general overseers and own private jets, asserting that Nigerian general overseers today have more jets than all the general overseers in the rest of the world put together.

He mentioned a particular personal experience when the general overseer of a particular church asked him to buy his church because the church was not yielding financial fruits.

“A general overseer approached me to buy his church. He said things were not moving well for him and he knew of a place where things would work and where he wanted to go,” he said.

Bishop Mamza spoke at St Augustine’s Catholic Church, Bekaji, Yola where he presided over a Mass to mark this year’s World Communications Sunday of the Catholic Church.

Speaking on the theme of the day, ‘Artificial Intelligence and the Wisdom of the Heart Towards a Fully Human Communication,’ the Yola Catholic Bishop said the touch of passion and empathy in human communication cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence.

He said, “Pope Francis invites us this World Communications Day to examine AI and how it affects communication. Although platforms for communications offer fantastic opportunities, they take out the humanity in us. Any gadgets that deduct from how humanity comes together for impactful close-touch relationships are not good enough.

Many circumstances crop up every so often when you need to be touched or touch someone when you need to stand right by somebody or have somebody stand by you. Only human communication can do this. In our pursuit of technology, may we always consider the need to strengthen human communication with all the necessary empathy that it possesses.”

The envoy said her country was working closely with the U.S. Treasury, Nigerian authorities, and African central banks towards ensuring public and private sector economic restoration, stability, and prosperity across Africa.

Speaking against the backdrop of the recently concluded 16th U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Dallas, Texas, Basu said the U.S. was also working on curbing Africa’s security, infrastructure and energy challenges.

"We just came back from a meeting in Abuja, which was between the Secretaries of State and the United States and is committed to being a good partner of prospect.

"We have made commitments to work on the security situation, infrastructure and energy, which is a common challenge not only in Nigeria but in some other countries in the continent.

“We have made concrete commitments to work on an enabling business environment in Nigeria and to make sure that American companies that are investing in Nigeria are having a transparent experience.

Politics / Give South-east Power Or Get Out Of Our Region – IPOB Warns Enugu Distribution C by Kuginzi: 7:26am On May 11
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has asked the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to provide steady power supply in the South East region or shut down and vacate the region immediately.

IPOB made the demand in a statement issued on Friday by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful.

Powerful also lambasted the power distribution company for excessive estimated billing of electricity consumers in the South East.

According to the IPOB spokesperson, EEDC is engaging in what he described as a deceptive strategy to sway the people of the South East by claiming that IPOB criticisms over non-supply of power and extortion of their customers was misinformation.

encourages vandalism because many communities pay through their nose to EEDC to fix the vandalised infrastructures.

“Many faulty power transformers that some villagers bought by themselves that EEDC took for repairs were never returned to the communities.

“The EEDC claimed that no amount was involved in the MOU signed by Anambra State Government and EEDC. We therefore challenge EEDC to publish the same terms of MOU.

“The EEDC further claimed that their Chairman, Emeka Offor was wrongly portrayed. They claimed that their chairman had a testimonial of good works in the South-East but failed to show any evidence of his good works.

“The EEDC must provide adequate light and free prepaid meters across the South East. All the lazy excuses why EEDC are strangulating economic growth in the South-East will no longer be tolerated.

“If EEDC is finding it difficult to provide power to the South-East region based on the challenges they enumerated in their press release, then they should plan to vacate the South-East for another company to take over before we chase them out of the South-East without remorse.”

The police in Edo State, south-south Nigeria have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of a 200-level student of Delta State University, Faith Omodon.

Omodon went missing on April 1, 2024. The student of DELSU in Agbor had gone to the farm around Ewohon/Uwemen communities in Edo State with “a Lifan CG 125 motorcycle and never returned”, the police said.

A police statement said the victim’s father, Edward Omodon reported the disappearance of his daughter to Abudu Division in Edo State.

Politics / Gowon: Nigeria Would Have Been Better If Yar’adua Had Completed His Tenure by Kuginzi: 9:18pm On May 06

A former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has said Nigeria would have been a better country if President Umaru Musa Yar’adua had completed his tenure.

Gowon spoke on Monday during a first President Umaru Musa Yar’adua international leadership conference and awards organised by Global Initiative For Leadership Success in Abuja.

Recall that Yar’adua became president in 2007, but in 2010, he died as a result of ill- health.

Gowon said Yar’adua had achieved significant milestones for Nigeria within his short time in office including granting amnesty to the Niger Delta militants as a way of restoring the economy of the country.

He lamented that though Yar’adua admitted that the process that produced him as president in 2007 was flawed and constituted the Justice Muhammed Uwais Committee for electoral reforms, successive administrations failed to continue with his initiative.

Gowon said, “He was a decent man; a man with absolute integrity. He was an honest man. He did very well and he has to be remembered. He was so honest that he said the process that brought him to power was not right. And he set up a committee. But it was not followed by successive leaders.

"However, I believe that one day, we shall have a solution. He was honey and sincere in dealing with any problem, and he was incorruptible. You can not blame him for corruption; he was clean. His various activities including the amnesty programme that he brought to the Niger Delta ensured our economy was protected.

“His illness and death, I believe if God had allowed him to complete his years in service, I believe Nigeria would have been better. A lot of things would have been better because he meant well for the country. So continue that love for the country and love for one another to make Nigeria great.”

Gowon also decried the spate of insecurity in the country and called on government and security agencies to fish out perpetrators of violent killings, abductions of schoolchildren in the North, and kidnapping for ransom in other parts of the country.

In his welcome address, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Global Initiative For Leadership Success, Gen A.B Mamman, said, “The blatant refusal to adopt and implement in whole this Uwais Committee report is consequential on the ever-faulty governance leadership recruitment system in Nigeria till date, accounting yet for her to remain in doldrums.

"Most public office holders continue to appear at the the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), or the Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) office to answer questions on their tenure and so many reasons.”

Politics / IPOB Warns Ohanaeze Ndigbo Against Apologising To Northern Nigeria Over 1966Coup by Kuginzi: 5:39pm On May 05
The Indigenous People of Biafra has warned pan-Igbo organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo against apologising over the 1966 military coup on behalf of the Igbo people.

IPOB made this known in a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, at the weekend, threatening that an order would be given to treat anyone who identifies themselves as an Ohanaeze Ndigbo member - at home and in the Diaspora - as a criminal and traitor should the organisation apologise to northern Nigeria for the coup.

The group warned the organisation led by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu not to go to Sokoto to apologise to the Fulani people for the coup, which has been tagged as ‘Igbo coup’ in some quarters.

The statement reads in part, "Ohanaeze has crossed the red line by attempting to go and apologize to the Fulani terrorists for what the clueless Ohanaeze called forgiveness from the Caliphate for Igbo military officers involvement in the 1966 coup that led to the death of Sir Ahmadu Bello.

“By the abominable planned visit of Ohaneze Ndigbo will be on record as aggressors instead of victims.”

It said, "Ndigbo never sent military officers to stage a coup for them or to murder on their behalf. Nevertheless, the 1966 coup that was carried out by the young military officers from all the ethnic groups in Nigeria was viciously tagged as Igbo coup. Why was the military coup led by Murtala Muhammed, Babangida, Buhari, Abacha and other Northern military officers not tagged Hausa or Fulani coup?”

"And an order will be given to treat anyone that identifies himself or herself as an Ohanaeze Ndigbo member both at home and in the Diaspora as a criminal and traitor and will be treated as one. In fact, going forward, Ohanaeze Ndigbo should stop speaking or representing Ndigbo,” it added.

However, Iwuanyanwu has said that Ohanaeze never had the intention to apologise for the 1966 coup.

According to him, the coup was strictly a military affair.

Addressing journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital at the weekend, Iwuanyanwu said, “We can’t go to beg anybody. Igbos were killed in that coup. As far as Ohanaeze Ndigbo is concerned, Igbos did not have any affair with the 1966 coup. It was purely a military affair.

“It’s not true, it’s fake news. The man that even carried the fake news has apologised. What happened was that we had a retreat at Enugu. Nobody talked about it. The only thing we did was to appoint a peace and reconciliatory committee because we want peace for our people in Lagos and everywhere else.

"First of all, Igbo didn’t carry out any coup. People who were killed were not killed by Ndigbo; they were killed by soldiers. Igbos didn’t kill anybody. The coup was carried out by soldiers.

“It was purely a military affair; nothing to do with the Igbo. We have no reason to apologise to anybody.”

Iwuanyanwu said he had never accepted responsibility for the coup.

"Nobody told Nzeogu to do coup, just like nobody told the others that did coup in Nigeria,” he added.

Politics / ‘Establishment Of Criminality’ Did Not Allow INEC Server Work – Peter Obi by Kuginzi: 9:13pm On May 04
By Francis Ugwu

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, said it was the ‘establishment of criminality’ that made the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, servers not work during the last presidential election.

Obi, who insisted that the people must one day make it to work, explained that Amazon testified there were no glitches recorded globally on the day of the presidential election.

The former Anambra State governor made the statement on Friday in Canada while addressing the issues about the last general election, including IREV servers.

DAILY POST reports that the LP presidential candidate was in Canada for a “thank you” tour to appreciate Nigerians living in the country for their support offered him during the 2023 campaign/ general elections.

He said: “Where did we go wrong in the last election? We didn’t go wrong anywhere. We did the right things. But as I can always tell people: when you bring a change, you fight all those who live off the old order. They don’t go away; they gang up. And don’t think it’s a straight race to remove an establishment. It’s a long-distance journey anywhere in the world. Go and check anywhere, whether you are looking at what happened in India, with Mandela in South Africa, or America. No change has happened overnight, it takes time. I urge all of you, if you really want change, we have just begun. We just have to continue from where we are.

“Yes, there might be one or two things we will correct, those things we will correct. I assure you we are correcting them without naming them.

It’s not going to be easy.

“The INEC server was the same as the establishment. The server would not work because it was the establishment that made it so it wouldn’t work. It’s ours to continue to say that it would work. But there was no glitch. Amazon came and said there was no glitch. Amazon glitch is noticed globally – it’s recorded globally. And at that period, we brought down an Amazon person who said this is the number of glitches we have had since inception. And there was none that it reported that day. We know it didn’t occur. It was the glitch of the establishment criminality that was in the system.
And we must one day make it work.”

Crime / Dikko Radda: Bandits Recruiting Youths For As Low As ₦‎500 by Kuginzi: 8:42pm On May 04

The governor of Katsina State Dikko Radda says poverty is one of the major factors fueling banditry in the country, citing instances where young people are recruited into crime for as low as N500.

"The issue of the hypothesis behind political motive as responsible for banditry is not true,” the Katsina State governor said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Secondly, what also causes the recruitment of under the logistics services for bandits was a result of poverty because surprisingly with N5,000, N2,000, and N200, you can be able to convince some of these youths to join into this exercise which brings about money,” he insisted.

The governor lamented that banditry which is rife in the North-West region of Nigeria has become a business venture for some persons including government officials.

'Business Venture’
“Now it has turned out to be a business venture. A business venture for the criminals, some people who are in government; and some people who are in security outfits, and some people who are responsible for the day-to-day activities of their people,” the governor said. “These are so many reasons why we are unable to bring banditry to an end.”

In recent years, criminal gangs known locally as bandits have repeatedly raided places mostly in rural areas in the northern region, abducting many and killing others.

President Bola Tinubu has made reducing insecurity one of his priorities. Some have called for negotiations with the bandits as a way to end the menace.

But the Katsina State governor said his government won’t negotiate from a “point of weakness”.

"When you understand the terrain of the forest, and the different camps that we have within those forests… like in Katsina, we have more than 100 different camps that are being led by somebody. So, they have many leaders, many camps and if you’re negotiating with camps A and B and don’t negotiate with camps C and D, it will not bring any lasting peace,” Governor Radda said.

“Even if you negotiate with the leaders, the other followers of the leaders may not necessarily comply with the directives of their leader. So that is what makes the negotiation with the bandits a very difficult task,” he said.

"What I said is that I would never go into negotiations with any criminal at the point of weakness,” the governor added.

Crime / Organ Harvesting: Police Arrest 10 Suspects In Lagos by Kuginzi: 11:03pm On May 03
By Bola Frazer

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a gang of suspected ritualists who specialise in killing people and harvesting body parts for sale in various states.

The suspects include a woman who is an Osun priestess, a community chief, an Ifa priest, an Islamic cleric, and a trado-medicine practitioner.

While confirming this burst on Friday, the spokesperson of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the suspects who operate in one of the extreme divisions of Lagos were arrested through intelligence reports from the public.

According to him, the leader of the gang, a 33-year-old man, Ademola Akinlosotu, confessed initially that he was exhuming corpses from cemeteries and selling their parts to ritualists but later graduated to killing and selling human parts to customers on demand.

Speaking on his antecedents, Akinlosotu said that he moved from killing people to harvesting parts because his clients requested fresh parts rather than dead body parts.

Akinlosotu said ”while I and some members of the gang would do the killings,” he would supply the parts to a 52-year-old man, Ahmed Wahab, aka Alfa Bororo, who operated from Badagry in Lagos State and Ogun State, to supply his clients.

The suspect said a fresh human head is sold at N45,000 or N50,000 while a dried human head sells between N30,000 and N35,000; heart for N70,000 and hands for N50,000.

Akinlosotu speaking further admitted to killing two persons, which included a friend he met through social media, before he was arrested.
He said before they killed anyone, the herbalist would be contacted to consult an oracle to determine whether the killing would be successful or would bring trouble.

The suspect alleged that a traditional ruler in Badagry requested him to kill his son because he was giving him problems. He also said that the day they were to carry out the killing was when a friend he met online visited him, and he was killed.

Akinlosotu said that all he harvests, when he kills, is the person’s head, the heart, and the hands.

Hundeyin said exhibits of different human parts were recovered from the suspects as the police continued the trail of other suspects. The command said that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

Commercial banks in Nigeria closed 2.021 million bank accounts in the first quarter of 2024, Q1’24, to clean their books of questionable accounts and comply with regulatory orders on the linkage of bank accounts to the National Identity Number, NIN.

This is contained in a report by the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System, NIBSS, which also indicated that the number of inactive bank accounts grew month-on-month, MoM, by four million or 2.0 per cent to 19.7 million in March 2024 from 19.3 million in the previous month, February.

A bank account is classified inactive when it records zero transactions including deposits, withdrawals, transfers or point-of-sale transactions for six months.

However, details of the “Industry Bank Account Database”, a monthly data reported by banks, and compiled by the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System, NIBSS, also indicated that the number of active bank accounts grew by 6.62 million or 3.0 per cent to 219.64 million from 213.02 million in February.

Recall that in December 2023, the CBN issued a directive to all commercial banks in the country to restrict tier-1 accounts without proper Biometric Verification Number, BVN, and National Identity Number, NIN, that are not linked by Thursday, March 1st, 2024.

Politics / Lagos-calabar Highway: Peter Obi Is Hypocrite, Demolished Houses In Anambra, Ref by Kuginzi: 5:43pm On May 01
Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, recently condemned the demolition of structures along the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, describing the project as a "misplaced priority in the face of pressing national challenges."

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has attacked the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, for criticising Tinubu’s government over the demolition of structures on the path of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, recently condemned the demolition of structures along the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, describing the project as a "misplaced priority in the face of pressing national challenges."

Obi, who said that it was not too late to discontinue the project in order to focus on other pressing issues in the country, also identified several road construction projects abandoned across the country, saying that many of them might not be completed in 30 years.

He expressed deep concerns over what he described as the insensitivity displayed by President Tinubu-led Nigerian government.

Obi highlighted the devastating impact of the project’s initiation on businesses and residences located in the designated right-of-way and lamented the destruction of livelihoods, the waste of lifetime investments, and the loss of jobs as bulldozers tore down affected areas.

Reacting to Obi’s criticism, Onanuga in a post on X platform on Wednesday said that the former Anambra governor was "an incurable hypocrite for attacking the President" over the project while in his time as the governor, he demolished structures of Anambra residents for construction of roads without paying them compensation.

Onanuga said, “Peter Obi is an incurable hypocrite. As governor of Anambra, he demolished houses to build roads and refused to pay compensation.

“Today, Obi is attacking the Tinubu government for demolishing structures standing on the path of Lagos-Calabar superhighway.”

Education / 2 Undergraduates Of Ambrose Alli University Killed In Edo Cult Clash (Photos) by Kuginzi: 7:34am On May 01
By Mumini Abdulkareem, Ilorin

Two undergraduates of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State have been shot dead in a cult-related reprisal attack.

It was gathered yesterday that one of the victims was a member of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and a 400-level student in the Faculty of Agriculture.

The incident occurred on Poultry Road Extension in Ekpoma after the death of a person named Eddy, who was reportedly beaten to death for allegedly using fake bank alerts to make purchases.

However, the circumstances surrounding Eddy’s death were misinterpreted as an attack by rival cult members, leading to a retaliatory attack by a rival cult group and resulting in the deaths of the two students.

The Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the cult-related killings and stated that some suspects had been apprehended, with investigations ongoing.

In a related development, one person has been killed and several properties were destroyed on Tuesday in a deadly clash between cult groups in Kwara State.

The incident occurred at Eyenkorin, Asa Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, confirmed the incident, saying “Mobile men and tactical teams have been deployed and are presently on the ground.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters were called to the scene around 4:50 hours only to find two buildings engulfed in flames.

"Investigations revealed a sinister plot as the inferno was deliberately set by rival groups clashing in a deadly confrontation. One life was lost and the bereaved group avenged it by targeting the home of the rival group’s leader, leaving two houses in ruins,” Adekunle said.

Daily Trust reports that five persons had been killed in recent clashes between Eiye and Aiye rival cult groups in the state.

Politics / Fuel Scarcity Bites Hard Across Northern States As Petrol Vendors Sell N2000 Per by Kuginzi: 7:10am On Apr 28
Fuel marketers in the northern region, especially Sokoto State, particularly black marketers are now selling patrol at N2000 per liter as scarcity of the product bites harder nationwide.

Residents of Sokoto and adjourning states have been thrown into lamentation and hardship due to the fuel scarcity being experienced in all parts of the region.

The unbearable scarcity of fuel in the state is said to have made businesses and other activities very difficult.

Channels TV reports that commuters in the state said most filling stations are locked under the guise that there is no fuel, while black marketers are selling a litre of petrol between N2,000 and N2,500 across the state capital.

Some of the residents called on the government to intervene to bring the situation under control so as not to degenerate, as they lamented that the situation has started affecting business activities and making life difficult for people.

They also said that the black market price of N2500 per litre is becoming scarce and that this is bringing business and other activities to a standstill in the state capital.

However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) blamed the fuel scarcity and queues that had resurfaced in Lagos, Abuja and other states on “logistics issues”, but said that the issues had been resolved.

The NNPCL in a statement said, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) wishes to clarify that the tightness in the supply of Premium Motor Spirit currently being experienced in some areas across the country is as a result of logistics issues and that they have been resolved.

“It also wishes to reiterate that the prices of petroleum products are not changing,” while calling on Nigerians to “avoid panic buying as there is a sufficiency of products in the country."

Business / Naira Rebounds, Sells For 1,280/$ At Parallel Market by Kuginzi: 6:43am On Apr 28
By Sunday Michael Ogwu

The Naira yesterday recovered against the US dollar at the parallel market as it appreciated to N1280/$, according to market information obtained by Nairametrics from currency traders.

This implied that the Naira appreciated by N120, representing a gain of 8.57 per cent when compared to the N1,400 to a dollar at which it traded on Friday.

Currency traders confirmed that they sold between N1, 280 and N1,300/dollar.

The local currency had, midweek lost a third of its value barely two weeks after strengthening to below N1,000 against the dollar.

It later dropped to N1,400 against the dollar at the black market on reports of fresh demand pressure.

This had made many people to question the impact of the sales of $15.83 million to 1,583 Bureau De Change (BDC) operators by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The apex bank had, on Monday announced the sale of $10,000 to its licensed currency traders nationwide at the rate of N1,021/$1 as part of its plans to aid foreign currency accessibility for qualified end users and stabilise the foreign exchange market.

Currency traders had attributed the recent depreciation of the Naira to market forces as supply had been unable to meet up with the demand.

Meanwhile, a data from FMDQ showed that the Naira continued its downward trend against the greenback at the official foreign exchange window, closing at N1,339.23/$1 on Friday.

This represents a 2.24 per cent depreciation when compared to the N1,309.88/$1 that was reported the previous day.

Recent initiatives by the apex bank had tempered forex scarcity, aiding the Naira’s recovery from an early March rate of N1,617 per dollar to N1,072 per dollar on April 17.

BDCs proffer solutions to depreciation

Meanwhile, the Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), has revealed plans for a unified retail end of the foreign currency market to tackle the recent Naira depreciation.

The president of the association, Aminu Gwadabe, disclosed this on Friday, noting that the move would tackle volatility and boost regulatory compliance within that market segment.

According to him, the association is implementing plans meant to unify operators from different cadres of the market, including the inauguration of state chapters for market coordination, integration and administering a united market structure.

He revealed plans to upgrade ABCON’s Business Process Platform, formerly called SAAZ Master.

"Part of our vision for a united retail-end forex market includes activating geo-mapping and automated BDCs physical office verification exercise using the Remote Gravity Physical verification apps.

“This will enable forex buyers to easily locate BDCs offices for effective and seamless transactions,” he stated.

Currency can’t appreciate in a vacuum – Senator Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko yesterday advised the federal government and the CBN against any measure capable of artificially forcing the Naira to gain value against other currencies.

Nwoko, who represents Delta North, gave the advice in a statement he signed and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He stated that continuous revisits to previously implemented policies and considerations of new ones were imperative.

He noted that the value of a sovereign nation’s currency is the cornerstone of respect and collaboration among nations.

The lawmaker emphasised that Nigeria must stimulate Naira demand.

According to him, as a country that exports crude oil and other commodities globally, it is imperative that all transaction on these items be conducted exclusively in Naira.

"This will incentivise buyers to seek out Naira, thereby driving its appreciation due to increased demand and scarcity.

“Moreover, the foreign reserve policy warrants reassessment.

“The practice of maintaining reserves in foreign jurisdictions, termed “foreign reserves,” is not only objectionable but also counterproductive to Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.

"Unlike other countries like the United States, Britain, France and Japan, which hold their reserves domestically, Nigeria’s adherence to this practice raises questions about its colonial legacy.

“If our early indigenous leaders acquiesced to this approach due to colonial influence, why should we perpetuate it? The primary rationale often cited to justify foreign reserves is trade balance maintenance,” Nwoko said.

According to him, this argument lacks merit when considering the limited number of traders involved in importing goods into Nigeria, which constitutes a negligible fraction of the country’s population.

Romance / I Still Want Godly Husband Despite My Past – 26-year-old Sex Worker by Kuginzi: 5:33am On Apr 28
By Godfrey George

A 26-year-old Ebonyi State lady, Chinaza Nwaezere, battling goitre (thyroid enlargement) decided to go into sex work to raise the money for her surgery after two failed businesses in Enugu State. She tells GODFREY GEORGE how life has been for her caring for her sick father and six younger siblings with the proceeds from the ‘business’ and why she wants to quit

Where are you from?

My name is Chinaza Nwaezere. I am 26 years old. I am from Abakiliki Local Government Area in Ebonyi State.

Did you go to school?

No, I did not finish secondary school. In fact, I stopped in JSS 1. I could not further my education because it was the period my mother died, and she was the breadwinner of the family.

What year was this?

This was in 2014.

Where is your dad?

My dad is alive, but my mother was the one taking care of the family.

How has life been since your mother’s passing?

Hmm… Life has been hard since she passed, especially as my dad is not really doing his work as a father. Everything is left for me and my siblings to hustle to make ends meet. We are just trying to survive.
When you said your father is not doing enough as a father, what did you mean?

My father is not capable of taking care of us.

Is he sick?

Yes, he is sick. He has been sick for many years, long before my mother’s demise. He has a heart condition, and because of that, he doesn’t do any hard work. He is just always at home because the doctors were very clear when they told him that he must avoid anything that would be classified as hard work. So, it has been me and my siblings struggling for the family.

We came together and gathered some money and opened a foodstuff business for him. That is what he does in Enugu. Although the business is very small and barely makes any profit, at least, my father can come out, interact with people, and make some sales so he will not just be lonely at home. He has been doing this business for a few years.

How many siblings do you have?

We are eight children. I am the second child. I have seven other siblings. Our last child should be around 11 years or so and he is still in school.

You mentioned you have an elder sister; where is she?

She is in Enugu. She is married with kids. She is a fashion designer. The burden of taking care of the family falls squarely on both our shoulders. My dad particularly relies on me so much and I have to do anything I have to do to provide, and all this was part of the reason I started sex work. My dad believed that, even if my siblings would not be able to give him any money for upkeep, I should be able to give him. We are really close.

How have you been able to live up to this responsibility?

Hmmm… It has not been easy. I was into food business. I sold food by the roadside in Enugu, but the business was not going as planned. It was not yielding much profit because the weight of the entire family was on it. It was from that business I took care of seven of my siblings and my father as well. The business collapsed before it even started. I also tried to do baking but it was not profitable to me. The money I was getting was not enough to take care of myself and my family.

It was around that period of my confusion that I was introduced to the ‘hustle’. I started hustling.

What do you mean by ‘hustling’?

I started hookup (sex work) in Enugu but had to relocate to Asaba, Delta State. I didn’t work for up to one week before I relocated to Asaba.

Why?

It was someone who told me to move to Asaba. She said the business there would be more profitable than Enugu. I also wasn’t feeling okay there, because that is where my family is based. I was staying with my dad and had to lie to him every night and I didn’t like it. I had to just decide to either stop it and return to poverty or move to Asaba and make some money.

I had to lie to my dad that I had a job in Asaba. He was so happy. He told me to kneel and he prayed for me before I left. He doesn’t really know what I am doing there.

What year exactly did you move to Asaba?

I moved in January 2024. I have only been in Asaba for four months.

How much have you made in four months?

The thing is that it is not every day I normally go out for this kind of stuff. There is also an issue of police clampdown. They are everywhere here, disturbing us. I had to stop for a while because of the police palaver. They are really disturbing girls here. I was squatting with a friend of mine here but she drove me out of the house, saying that she couldn’t accommodate me if I was not bringing money into the house for some basic things. I became homeless for a while before I got to the place where I am squatting now. I pay N11,000 here every week.

In a month, I may hustle for just two weeks. The money that I get, I will try to save. The money that they are paying me here is not even big.

How much do you charge for your services?

I can tell a man that a night with me is N30,000. They will beat it down to around N10,000. If it is okay by me, I will go with the man.

What is the highest that you have been paid in a night?

The highest? I don’t know. If it is someone that I have looked at from afar and weighed his pocket, I can demand N50,000 or N40,000, and they may beat it down to N30,000 which is my regular charge. But, it is not that simple.

At what point did you notice that you had goitre?

It started developing in my body in 2022. I just woke up and noticed I had a swelling. I thought it was just neck pain or sore throat. I went to a pharmacy and got medication for a case of sore throat. But, it kept growing bigger. I carried it for the entire year and even into 2023. It was in 2023 that the pain became unbearable as the swelling got really bigger. It has been weighing me down. This is the major thing that made me say I must take it out.

Foreign Affairs / US Agrees To Withdraw Troops From Niger, Clearing Path For Russia by Kuginzi: 9:44pm On Apr 20
US officials have stated that the United States has agreed to Niger's request to withdraw US troops from the West African country.

During a meeting, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine committed to initiating conversations in Niamey to plan an orderly and responsible withdrawal of US troops from Niger.

Last year, more than 1,000 US troops were stationed in Niger, operating from two bases. Among these bases was Air Base 201, a notable $100 million drone facility situated near Agadez in central Niger.

Since 2018, the base has targeted Islamic State militants and Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen, an al-Qaeda affiliate, in the Sahel region.

Last year, Niger's army staged a coup, seizing power. Until then, Niger had remained a key security partner of the United States and France.

Niger's recent leadership change has triggered a significant realignment of alliances. The new governments, mirroring actions taken by neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso, have terminated military partnerships with Western nations such as the US and France.

They have also disengaged from the regional economic bloc ECOWAS and pursued closer ties with Russia. These developments have prompted the US to accept Niger's request for troop withdrawal.

Last month, Niger's ruling junta announced the immediate revocation of a military agreement permitting the presence of military personnel and civilian staff from the US Department of Defense on its soil.

Following the ruling junta's announcement, the Pentagon stated it was seeking clarification on the next steps. It confirmed that the US government engaged in "direct and candid" discussions in Niger prior to the junta's decision and remained in communication with Niger's ruling military council.

Last week, hundreds of protestors rallied in Niger's capital, demanding the withdrawal of US troops. This came after the ruling junta's pivot in strategy, which included terminating the military agreement with the United States and welcoming Russian military instructors.

The region has witnessed eight coups in West and Central Africa over the past four years, raising concerns about democracy erosion in countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Politics / Moves To De-Register LP Will Be Resisted With Our Blood – Awamaridi by Kuginzi: 8:28pm On Apr 15
By Olayinka Ajayi

ACTING National Chairman of the Labour Party, Prince Ifagbemi Awamaridi, has raised an alarm of alleged plans to kill the LP, saying they would resist the plots.

Briefing newsmen in Lagos, Awamaridi, in a press statement titled: “Nigeria; the hard way, the only way” apologized on behalf of the party for the “disappointing conduct of the past executives,” which he described in Yoruba as “Gbajue” (fraud).

He said: “I and other members of the party apologize on behalf of the Labour Party for the disappointing conduct of the Gbajue executive.

“They commercially rented the party as a Special Purpose Vehicle mapped out as a mischief to kill the party in such a way that the party will be de-registered.

"The de-registration move they are making is done secretly, and we are aware. We will resist it with our last blood.

“We are now in charge of the Labour Party, and any group or individuals that call themselves the Labour Party are mere political clubs as all former excos’ tenures have expired.”
