Politics / Report Bribe Seekers To Me, Tinubu Tells Qatari Investors by Kuginzi: 8:50pm On Mar 03
By Emmanuel Egobiambu

President Bola Tinubu has re-echoed his government’s resolve to fight corruption and create a good business environment, urging Qatari investors to report any Nigerian government official who asks for bribe.

Tinubu said this at the Nigeria-Qatar Business and Investment Forum in Doha, on Sunday, promising that his government will deal decisively with any entrenched interests in the country that undermine investor confidence in the Nigerian economy.

"I am here to give you the assurance that reforms are going on; forget about whatever you heard in the past. Whatever is the obstacle or problem that some of you might have experienced; it is in the past because there is no obstacle in the future,” Tinubu said

"Do not offer a bribe to any of our people, and if it is requested or taken from you, report to us. You will have access to me. Nigeria will no longer be defined by the past, but by what we do now and moving forward. Do not let perceptions become a hindrance to your will to invest. Nigeria is serious about revolutionizing investment promotion.

“We are removing obstacles today and we are going to continue to remove all obstacles. We have done so much within nine months. And I am assuring you, it is free entry and free exit. Your funds will flow smoothly into and out of our country. Bring your investments”.

According to Tinubu, the war against corruption and insecurity in Nigeria had been significantly strengthened with the appointment of a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser (NSA).

"We have a man who has won many global awards for anti-corruption as an anti-corruption czar,” he said.

“My responsibility is to tell you that Nigeria is open for business and to assure you that your investments are safe in our hands. We have men and women of great reputation here. And we believe we can forge a good committee that will advance our discussions to fruitful conclusions.

“A nation is an artificial entity unless there are good people to drive it. People build great nations and we have great people. We are ready.”

Politics / No Going Back On Demand For N1m Minimum Wage – Ogun NLC by Kuginzi: 10:08pm On Feb 28
By Taiwo Bankole

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Ogun State, Hammed Ademola-Benco, on Wednesday, said that there is no going back on the proposed N1m minimum wage for workers.

Ademola-Benco stated this while addressing journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital as the union ended the two-day protest called to demand that the Federal Government address the challenges of insecurity, hunger and the high cost of living in the country.

The state NLC chairman insisted that the national leadership of the union would not back down on its demands, particularly the N1m minimum wage.

The National President, NLC, Joe Ajaero, had stated that if the ongoing inflation continues unabated, organised labour might push for a new minimum wage of up to N1m for Nigerian workers.

Ajaero said the demand from organised labour would be influenced by the cost of living which has been increasing since President Bola Tinubu assumed office, notably due to the removal of fuel subsidy and other policies.

Members of the NLC had embarked on a nationwide protest over the economic hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal, amongst others, before suspending it and thereafter, gave the FG a new two-week ultimatum.

Ajaero, however, stated on Wednesday that the labour union could not proceed with its two-day nationwide protest due to intimidation and threats.

Speaking with journalists at the union’s secretariat in Abeokuta, Ademola-Benco lamented that Nigerian workers are among the worst paid in the world.

He said, “N1m minimum wage was a product of dollarisation, so we are not withdrawing that, except until they (FG) explain to us why we have to shift ground. We are human beings, we are ready to shift ground.

"Because I can’t just imagine somebody working in Canada and earning 30 Canadian dollar per hour. If the Canadian dollar is N1,000, that means that person is taking N30,000 per hour and some people here are not earning up to N6,000 per eight hours.

“They must bring everything to the table and explain to us, convince us why we should not dollarise salary of workers in this country.”

Ademola-Benco said the nationwide protest was successful despite the pulling out by its sister union, Trade Union Congress and other affiliates.

Politics / I’m Back To Chase Away Killer Herdsmen – Sunday Igboho by Kuginzi: 3:23pm On Feb 27
Samuel Oamen

Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Igboho who returned to the country last week has said he is ready to face and chase out killer herdsmen from Yorubaland.

Igboho said this while addressing a group of people in the Yoruba language during the burial of his mother in his hometown, Igboho area of Oyo state.

He said the police and the soldiers deployed to Yorubaland, especially to Ekiti where monarchs were killed in broad daylight cannot combat the supposed killers.

He said: “I want you all to stand with me so that we can liberate ourselves from the herders encroaching on our lands. Let us mount security in all the Yoruba lands ourselves, if not, they will take our lands.

“We don’t have to wait for the government or anyone. Let’s just work in unison. We cannot farm on our lands because of these herders.

"And our people are going hungry and angry. We don’t need the soldiers the government claims to have deployed to Ekiti state. We work following our elders and mount the places ourselves.

"It was my mother that was my fear before but now she’s gone, I have nothing to be scared of again. I am now back to take back our land.”

While refuting claims that he was working for politicians, Igboho queried if he could be working for politicians and if they would still want him dead.

He added: “I am not working for any politician. In fact, if I incidentally slapped someone, the government would be ready to arrest me and put me behind bars.

"I know they are watching me closely now to know my next action but I’m ready to take a step to stop these marauders’ activities in our lands.”

Politics / Hardship: Lawmakers Can’t Cut Their Salaries By Half – Deputy Speaker by Kuginzi: 2:04pm On Feb 27
By Aliyu Jalal

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said that the salary of the National Assembly members is not as much as Nigerians think and 50 per cent of it cannot be sacrificed to mitigate the suffering of the masses.

Amidst the ongoing economic crisis, some Nigerians have urged members of the National Assembly to take a significant step in alleviating the suffering.

One of the calls demanded the lawmakers to cut their salaries by half to demonstrate solidarity with the masses grappling with rising inflation, unemployment, and a general decline in living standards.

Responding to the call during an interview on Channels Television, the Deputy Speaker acknowledged the severity of the crisis and emphasized the need for intervention.

He also underscored the importance of sound policies that extend beyond mere pronouncements.

Kalu said that delayed gratification is essential for long-term gains, even as Nigerians endure the current hardships.

He assured the public that the 10th National Assembly was not indifferent to their plight, adding that they were prepared to make adjustments where necessary.

He explained that while salaries are fixed and form part of legislators’ compensation, allowances serve specific purposes related to their duties.

He added that spending allowances is strictly regulated, and any misuse can result in sanctions upon retirement.

He also said that contrary to popular belief, the salary of the National Assembly members fell short of public perception, noting that reducing it by 50 per cent would not significantly impact the public.

He said, “If we found out (just like we did during the COVID 19) that people are suffering and we need to intervene, we will make certain sacrifices to be able to identify with the people.

“I can assure you as well that we are not hoping that this crisis we are going through will linger for a very long time because when you have sound policies, it doesn’t end with just policy pronouncement; we need to give a timeline for the maturation of that policy and Nigerians are passing through a phase now in which delayed gratification for a better gain tomorrow is necessary.

"We don’t intend to make it last for too long. But if there’s the need to make some adjustments, I can assure you that the members of the 10th National Assembly are willing to make adjustments.

“But at the moment, talking about the salary of the members of the National Assembly, it’s not as much as people think. Salary is different from allowances, which are meant to do the jobs that the constituencies have sent us to do.

"Nobody is allowed to touch allowances, it’s your salary that belongs to you. Allowances have subheadings for things which they are meant for. If you use it wrongly, when you are retiring, you would be sanctioned for that.

“So talking about the salary of the members of the National Assembly, it’s far from what it’s supposed to be. And I can assure you that if you reduce it by 50%, it would not really impact the public.

"Based on current economic indices and the inflationary rate at the moment, what the members of the National Assembly are receiving cannot actively take them home to do their jobs in their various constituencies. So how could they cut their salaries by half?”

Politics / NLC President Presents Protesters’ Demands To National Assembly by Kuginzi: 1:49pm On Feb 27
By Gift Habib

The President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, has handed over their letter of demands to the National Assembly.

The demands included full implementation of the welfare provisions, employment generation, immediate subsidy to farmers, immediate subsidy to farmers to boost agricultural production, and fixing the four refineries among others.

Ajaero handed over the letter to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Senator Diket Plang on Tuesday.

Ajaero in his remarks at the National Assembly, said Nigerians embarked on the peaceful protests because there was hunger in the land, adding that “Nigeria is becoming like Zimbabwe.”

Ajaero noted that the minimum wage negotiation has started but the amount was yet to be decided.

He said that the protest would serve as a signal to the FG to immediately tackle the challenges bedeviling the country.

Plang, after receiving the letter assured the protesters that the demands of the NLC would be looked at and discussed immediately.

The NLC and other related unions commenced national planned protests on Tuesday over the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and hardship in the country.

The unions involved are the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, FCT Council, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Nigeria Union of Teachers, and Construction Workers’ Union, among others.

The protesters were seen carrying placards such as #End Poverty and Hunger. Support Local Industries#; Fix Local Refineries End Subsidy#; #End Naira Devaluation; Tax the Rich Subsidise the poor# to make their grievances known on the current economic hardship across the country.

Politics / NLC Threatens Total Shutdown If Protesters Are Attacked by Kuginzi: 10:19pm On Feb 26
By Kayode Oyero

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to shut down its services all over the country if labour members are attacked during its planned two-day protest beginning February 27, 2024.

The Labour, in a statement on Sunday, signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, said there is no going back on the planned industrial action.

The NLC said the Federal Government must put on its thinking cap and implement its agreement with the Organised Labour as well as address the mounting economic crisis of survival in Nigeria.

Nigeria is battling rising inflation, food inflation, forex crisis, economic hardship and high cost of living occasioned by the removal of petrol subsidy, attracting protests in parts of the country.

Despite subtle pressure from the government for the group not to embark on the planned strike, the NLC said its member won’t be cowed to shelve their proposed nationwide protest.

All we are saying now is that; let there be food for the people, let the people live in safety, let the people live a life of dignity devoid of suffocating IMF/World Bank economic policies,” the group said.

Labour also raised the alarm that plans have been perfected to attack planned peaceful rallies across the country.

Ajaero said, “We would want the State to know that the solution to our horrible economic situation and hunger is not by suppressing peaceful dissent or inflicting violence on peacefully protesting citizens as the government did in Minna and other cities where its agents tear-gassed and beat up women before locking them up for raising their voice against hunger. It does not lie in the deployment of State -sponsored terror. The pangs of hunger cannot be cowed by bullets or tear gas.

“In light of this, we at the Nigeria Labour Congress and civil society allies are moving ahead with our protest rallies against economic hardship and insecurity in line with the decision of the National Executive Council.”

"We advise the State to put on its thinking cap and find solutions to the pains it continues to cause the people instead of further dehumanising them.

“However, if it is irrevocably set on the path of violence against us and other peace-loving Nigerians, it will be making a costly mistake because if we are attacked there will be a total shut down via withdrawal of services by workers. Let no one be deceived, we and other deprived Nigerians cannot easily be intimidated,” he added.

Politics / NLC’s Planned Protest, Contempt Of Court -AGF by Kuginzi: 12:34pm On Feb 24
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN) has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress to shelve its proposed nationwide protest.

On February 16, the NLC announced a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, in response to the economic challenges facing the country.

This decision followed the conclusion of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government regarding the widespread hardship.

However, in a letter addressed to the counsel for the NLC, Femi Falana, (SAN) dated February 23, 2024, Fagbemi reminded the NLC of a subsisting order restraining the union from embarking on any industrial action.

The letter read, “I wish to draw your esteemed attention to the Joint Press Release dated 8th February 2024, containing a 14-day ultimatum, jointly issued by the President of the NLC and President of the TUC as well as the notice of a two-day national protest issued by the NLC President on 16th February 2024.

“A cursory perusal of the above press release clearly shows that the planned protest is premised on or connected with alleged non-implementation of the 16-point agreement reached with the Federal Government on October 02, 2023, consequences of the hike in the price of PMS, and other associated issues. It is therefore safe to assert again that the proposed cause of action by NLC is targeted at achieving objectives or promoting issues connected with a hike in fuel price and consequential matters of palliatives workers ‘ welfare, and associated government policies.

"You may wish to note that the foregoing issues or objectives are at the core of the pending case before the National Industrial Court. Upon the submission of grievances to the court, parties in the suit cannot resort to public protests over the same issues, as such conduct amounts to gross contempt and affront to the institution of our courts of law. Therefore, the proposed nationwide protest action in all ramifications is in clear violation of the pending interim injunctive order granted in SUIT NO: NICN/ABJ/158/2023-FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA & ANOR V. NIGERIAN LABOUR CONGRESS & ANOR on 5th June 2023 restraining both NLC and TUC from embarking on any industrial action or strike of any nature.

"It is not in doubt that the planned protest is designed to compel the government to accede to the demands of organised labour, therefore, such action qualifies as an industrial action which comes within the ambit of the restraining order. This restraining order has neither been stayed nor set- aside and therefore remains binding.”

He noted that the government had substantially met the demands of the union as contained in the Memorandum of Understanding entered with the NLC.

Fagbemi said, ” I wish to note that the government has substantially and reasonably complied with the items in the MOU and it is only appropriate and equitable for organized labour to engage more with the government to ensure the full implementation of same, especially in areas that have been inhibited by unforeseen challenges.

“May I, therefore request that you kindly implore and enjoin your clients to refrain from self-help by shelving the proposed protests which are antithetical to the mediatory engagements leading to the execution of the MOU, tantamount to undermining subsisting restraining court order, and occasioning disruption of public service, order, and safety"

Politics / Cost Of Living Protest: TUC Faults NLC, Says Action May Bring Anarchy by Kuginzi: 5:57am On Feb 24
The Trade Union Congress has warned that the planned protest on February 27 and 28 being championed by the Nigeria Labour Congress may lead to anarchy.

This is as the union stated that the country was too volatile and tense because of the prevailing hunger in the land.

This warning was made by the Deputy President of the TUC, Dr Tommy Etim, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH.

The Organised Labour plans to embark on a two-day strike on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest the hardship currently being faced by Nigerians following the dramatic hike in the prices of goods and services due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the free fall of the naira, among others.

Pockets of protests had broken out in Kano, Niger, Oyo and Osun, among other states, with protesters urging the government to take decisive steps to bring the hardship to an end.

Nigeria’s annual inflation rate climbed to a near 28-year high of 29.9 per cent in January, up from 28.9 per cent in December and above market forecasts of 29.5 per cent.

Food prices are at an all-time high, with a bag of long-grain rice hitting N77,000.

Several videos online have shown netizens lamenting the increase in the prices of consumer goods like toothpaste, butter, and tin tomatoes, among others, and asking the President, Bola Tinubu to intervene.

Many have also expressed their willingness to join the NLC protest to press home their demands for a change in the economic trajectory of the country.

However, the TUC backed out, saying that it was not aware of the planned rally. This caused a crack in the wall of the Organised Labour.

Although the NLC has insisted that the two-day rally must be held, the TUC has stated that it will not be part of the demonstration.

Etim, while commenting on the planned rally, stated that it was ill-timed and urged the NLC not to plunge the country into anarchy.

Speaking on why the TUC backed out of the proposed protest, the labour leader accused the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, of running a one-man show by failing to carry members of the TUC along in his decision to declare a two-day strike.

Etim said the NLC had slighted the TUC in making unilateral decisions four times, adding that it was now a deliberate act.

He said, “When one claims that a mistake is done and it is one that a mistake can be accepted as a mistake, but, when it is up to four times, it is now a deliberate action.

“The first thing is that when you issue an ultimatum to the government, the NEC is supposed to meet to review it. When they do, they will then make a decision.

“In this case, the ultimatum given to the Federal Government was still on and the NLC president decided to announce that they would be going on protest as though he had not been in industrial relations practice or law. It baffles us. We cannot take that.

"What is the essence of unionism if you don’t come together for a particular cause? So, adopting a situation where two centres have been on the ground and one feels it has superior knowledge is not a good one at all.

“I feel that he should be sensitive to know that the struggle is not a one-party affair and we must save the country. We have to be a united force. And we have also said that a people united cannot be defeated. The President must leave up to his responsibility.”

No going back – NLC

Reacting, the Head of Information for the NLC, Benson Upah, in a chat with Saturday PUNCH on Friday, insisted that the planned protest would hold, adding that the congress was in touch with the TUC.

"We are going ahead with the protest come February 27 and 28. There is no reason for us to change our minds on that,” Upah noted.

On Etim’s statement of the TUC being sidelined by the NLC, Upah simply said, “We are in touch with the TUC. We are one family.”

However, Etim said the TUC had not received a letter of apology, adding that the NLC must understand that it could not carry out such a national assignment in disunity.

He further stressed that the disagreement between both labour unions would not affect the workers’ needs.

“Whatever happens now will embolden us. There is no organised labour trade centre that cannot fight on its own, but we decided to come together. We feel that fighting alone without unity will not give us the result,” he added.

Protest ill-timed – TUC

Etim said the Organised Labour could get its demands without protests, adding that all it needed to do was strategic engagement.

According to him, if the protest goes on as planned, it may be hijacked by anarchists and turn chaotic.

He said, “If we carry out a protest in this time of hunger and we may meet anarchy. A hungry man is an angry man, and any protest at this time can snowball into a revolution, which we cannot contain.

"Take what happened in Imo State where Ajaero himself went there after several warnings. If not for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the NLC leader would have been killed.

“When there is tension in the land, we must be very sceptical and strategic in our agitation. We are not babies; we have been long in this struggle. I, for one, have been in this struggle for 35 years. Sentiments and pride don’t pay.”

On rumours that the TUC might have been compromised by the Federal Government, Etim said, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion but the thing is for sure, hunger knows no religion, political party or ethnic sentiments.

“Whether you are a big man or not, your family members are also feeding on you; and if they are parasitic, you will know that one rich man in a community is poor.

"Whatever we are doing, we must recognise that it is time to rescue Nigeria and we cannot just sit down and say a protest will solve the matter.

"Yes, we can mobilise. Yes, protest is our right. But, I think we should be strategic to know that we must carry everyone along rather than thinking we can do it alone. A fight of this nature is not a one-man fight.

“We at the TUC don’t issue threats and back down. The NLC is synonymous with issuing protest threats and backing out, and we don’t want to be a part of that. Any day we issue a notice of action, we carry it to the letter. If you follow our trajectory, you’d know that we always walk our talks.”

Police warn anarchists

The Taraba, Kaduna and Rivers police commands have warned hoodlums to steer clear of protest grounds during the rally proposed by the NLC.

The Taraba State command, on Friday, said it had placed its personnel on high alert to ensure that hoodlums did not take advantage of the protest to ferment trouble.

Though the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Usman Abdullahi did not take his calls, a senior police officer in the command, who spoke to one of our correspondents on the telephone, said the Commissioner of Police in the state had deployed enough personnel for the protest to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

"In our meeting earlier today (Friday), we deliberated on security issues in the state, including the planned protest by the NLC. I can assure you that our personnel are on red alert to prevent any break down of law and order,” the senior officer said.

In Kaduna, the state police command appealed to the leadership of the NLC to shelve the planned two-day nationwide protest.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, said the plea became necessary because of the precarious nature of the state, which has been enjoying relative peace for a while now.

The police spokesman, however, noted that if the organised labour decided against the appeal, the command would provide adequate cover for the protesters.

He, however, warned the NLC to ensure utmost civility and be law-abiding.

According to him, members of the Organised Labour should know that their rights end where other citizens’ rights begin.

Hassan also warned hoodlums against infiltrating the protest, which he insisted must be peaceful.

The police chief said, “We are appealing that the protest should not even hold. They should understand the nature of Kaduna that it is not everywhere they should come and protest.

Politics / Shaibu: PDP Will Lose Edo State If They Don’t Accept Me As Candidate by Kuginzi: 9:19pm On Feb 23
The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that failure to accept him as its candidate in the State governorship election will spell doom for the party in the state.

Asue Ighodalo won the PDP primary at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday; Philip Shaibu won the parallel election at a different venue.

Speaking on the development on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Shuaibu maintained that he is the authentic candidate of the party for the September 21 election, saying that Edo people do not want Ighodalo whom he said is not homeboy.

“The option is for the PDP not to go and argue against my candidacy, if they do that PDP will lose Edo State. Edo people do not want Asue Ighodalo to be the governor of Edo State because he is not a homeboy they know.

“They are looking for someone that they know, somebody they can feel, somebody they can touch. PDP has a date with history, delegates have spoken that they want Shuaibu and I can bet you that the other eight aspirants will support Shuaibu if they party back him.

"If the party decides to join us in court to argue for Ighodalo then PDP then winning Edo State for PDP will be shaky because Asue will not be accepted by the people,” Shaibu said.

The deputy governor faulted the primary that produced Ighodalo, saying that it was organised by the state party executive instead of the national executive of the party.

He claimed that members of the state executive and the governor are supporters of Ighodalo and therefore were not going to conduct an unbiased election.

Shaibu insisted that he was elected by the authentic delegates of the party in the state.

“I was elected by the authentic delegates, what is key is who are those that elected the governor’s preferred candidate Asue and who are those that elected Philip Shaibu? I think in the coming days we will know who among them are authentic,” he said.

Shaibu also said his relationship with Governor Godwin Obaseki is not the best at the moment, suggesting that his governorship ambition could be the reason behind the strained relationship with the governor.

” My relationship with the governor(Obaseki) is not cordial…I have tried calling him and he doesn’t pick up my calls. I greet him at public functions and he doesn’t answer me.

Not Worried About Shaibu’

Meanwhile, Ighodalo, who emerged as the candidate in the other primary on Thursday, said he is not worried about the emergence of Shaibu as a parallel flagbearer for the party.

Despite the seeming confusion, Ighodalo is not bothered, hinging his resolve on the law.

“We went through the proper process. I’m not worried about Philip Shaibu’s emergence as a parallel candidate,” he said on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today hours after his declaration as the winner of the exercise.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) did everything in accordance with the rule of law. From what I have seen, due process was followed. That some people did not agree with it does not mean it is not the right process.”

Ighodalo, a financial expert, beat nine other aspirants to emerge as the PDP candidate for the September 24 election in the South-South state.

Politics / Pro-Tinubu Youths Storm NASS, Fault NLC’s Planned Protests by Kuginzi: 7:42pm On Feb 23
Scores of pro-democracy activists on Friday staged a solidarity march from the popular Unity Fountain to the National Assembly complex in Abuja to demand that the Nigeria Labour Congress suspend its planned two-day protest and return to the negotiation table with the Federal Government.

They also vowed to mobilise Nigerians against the unionists if the lawmakers couldn’t convince them not to go ahead with the protest.

The protesters, who arrived at the complex in six luxury buses, were chanting solidarity songs and displaying displaying anti-NLC placards.

Some of the placards read “Let’s be patient with Tinubu” “NLC, please rest. Jagaban is working” and “NLC, stop pretending to be fighting for Nigerians.”

Addressing newsmen at the Unity Fountain, Convener of Nigerian Civil Society Forum, Sunday Attah, said those who are familiar with history know that the same NLC that is ‘pretending to fight for the masses’ was among the biggest critics of fuel subsidy removal.

Attah also urged the unionists to borrow a leaf from the United Kingdom where the people stood with the government when the country’s economy entered recession.

He said, “We must understand the trajectory of how the NLC has operated over time. Remember in this same country when fuel subsidy was removed, they got up and claimed to be standing for Nigerians. They fought and said fuel subsidy should not be removed. But after a series of meetings, which of course today they are saying didn’t yield any fruit, we know how these ‘coloured’ papers exchanged hands and matters died on the ground.

"We are not going to allow the NLC to plunge Nigeria into anarchy. Calling for protest against an eight-month-old government is uncalled for. The President is doing his best. He is not a magician. All that Nigerians need at the moment is to be patient with the President.

“When a woman gets pregnant it takes nine months for her to deliver. When the child is born, it takes another one to two years for the child to walk. Why can’t NLC support Mr President to deliver dividends of democracy and to fulfill all his campaign promises?

What they are doing is to play the wild card to get the sympathy of Nigerians then go behind to negotiate and collect money. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not that kind of president. He wants to work for all Nigerians and this is the reason why the president begged Nigerians to give him time. His policies may take a little time for us to adjust.

“These things happen even in civilised societies where government policies do not start manifesting and yielding fruits overnight it takes a little process of time and that is the process we are at the moment. In the UK today the British government is in recession. Are people protesting against the government? It is a process.”

His position was shared by the co-convener of the group, Terrence Kuanum, who argued that shutting down commercial activities in the country won’t resolve the economic hardship in the country.

“I am hungry, you are hungry. But it is not by sabotaging the system or antagonising the system that we can resolve this issue. We can only resolve this issue as patriotic Nigerians so the next generation doesn’t face it.

"We are giving them 24 hours to rescind the decision to protest and go back to the negotiation table. If they insist on coming out, we are calling on Nigerians not to respect any decision from NLC. We are going to mobilise the masses to stay back and work for this country. No strike can solve this problem. People go on strike to get the attention of policymakers. But in your case, you are already with the policymakers. So what is the essence of the strike?” he said.

The NLC affirmed its determination to proceed with planned protests against the current economic conditions, disregarding warnings from the Department of State Services.

It has also commenced mobilisation efforts for a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, highlighting the country’s cost of living crisis.

Sources indicate that the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its commitments following the 14-day ultimatum from labor will result in a two-day nationwide protest on February 27 and 28.

Politics / Don’t Compound Tough Situation Of Nigerians, Tinubu Warns Civil Servants by Kuginzi: 9:27pm On Feb 22
By Seun Adeuyi

President Bola Tinubu has warned senior civil servants against compounding the tough situation of Nigerians.

Daily Trust reports that Nigerians have been complaining of hardship, which has triggered protests in different parts of the country.

This followed the removal of fuel subsidy and some monetary policies during the President’s inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

Tinubu, who met with the Head of Service, The Body Of Permanent Secretaries, and some Directors-General of agencies at the State House, on Thursday, said policies impacting the welfare of the people and the economy must be treated with urgency, diligence, and a strong sense of duty.

Tinubu asked public servants to always think and work with a generational understanding of their role in shaping national history, knowing that they serve as the engine room of the government and that their actions will affect more than 200 million people in the country and abroad.

Tinubu said: “Let us make our children’s dreams come true. Why are we slowing that down?

“It is not just shameful. It is unacceptable. We made a pledge to bring our people out of poverty. You should not increase their vulnerability. Help Nigerians to get out of these problems, do not compound the tough situation with unacceptable delays."

The President warned that the ineffectiveness and unnecessary bureaucracy that result in the delay of interventions on the economy and with programmes targeting vulnerable citizens would not be tolerated.

He directed that a monthly briefing by The Head Of Service and submission of key performance indicator (KPI) reports should be made to his office for review, and that quarterly interactive meetings between the President and The Body of Permanent Secretaries will now be scheduled.

The Head Of Service and The Body Of Permanent Secretaries were mandated by the President to consistently measure progress in actualizing the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.

Before the next meeting, I want to see progress in the civil service. I have been sending people to check the level of work that gets done. Service to the nation is extremely important. We are to change the narrative on Nigeria.

"You and I can change the perception about Africa, not just Nigeria. We might not get it 100 percent right, but if we are focused, I think we can totally change and reshape the trajectory of our country in the right direction,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan briefed the President on the performance of the service in relation to previously established KPIs across multiple assessment streams.

Politics / TUC, NLC Split As DSS Warns Labour Against Planned Protest by Kuginzi: 5:56am On Feb 22
Adelani Adepegba and Solomon Odeniyi

The Trade Union Congress has backed out of the planned two-day nationwide protest declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress over the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and hardship in the country.

The Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the decision to protest on February 27 and 28 as announced by the NLC was not taken collectively by both unions.

The TUC in a letter dated February 19, 2024, written by its Secretary General, Dr Nuhu Toro, said the NLC unilaterally took the decision on the planned protest.

Etim in the interview with one of our correspondents, confirmed the letter addressed to the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, adding that “by the virtue of the letter, there is no way we can join the protest.”

This is happening as the Department of State Services warned organised Labour against the planned mass action, saying it could be hijacked.

The NLC had on February 16 declared a two-day protest which would begin after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government which will expire on February 22 (today).

The warning was on account of the alleged failure of the government to implement the agreements reached on October 2, following the removal of the fuel subsidy and other economic reforms which had triggered higher transportation costs, inflation, and general hardship.

The situation had provoked protests across the country with youths, and women taking to the streets over the food inflation and higher cost of living.

The NLC and TUC earlier on February 8 gave a two-week ultimatum to the government to meet demands ranging from wage increments to improved access to public utilities and accused it of failing to uphold pledges to soften the impact of reforms.

Briefing journalists in Abuja after an emergency National Executive Council meeting on the state of the economy and matters related to insecurity in the country, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, also accused the Federal Government of failing to implement the agreement reached in October.

On Monday, the Head of Information of the NLC, Benson Upah, said the NLC affiliates were being mobilised for the protest just as state chapters of the congress vowed to join the nationwide demonstration.

The PUNCH had on Tuesday reported that one of the NLC affiliates, National Union of Public Service Reportorial, Secretarial, Data Processors, and Allied Workers Union, in a letter dated February 18, 2024, written by its Secretary General, Duro Adebisi, directed its members to join the NLC planned protest.

But in a new twist, another Labour centre, the TUC, in the letter written by its Secretary General, Toro, faulted the process adopted by the NLC in fixing the dates for the protests.

But in a new twist, another Labour centre, the TUC, in the letter written by its Secretary General, Toro, faulted the process adopted by the NLC in fixing the dates for the protests.

Confirming the latest position of the TUC, the Vice-President, Etim, noted, “We cannot join the protest because the decision was not taken collectively. It is very clear that by virtue of the letter, there is no way we can join the protest.”

In the letter obtained by this newspaper on Wednesday, Toro recalled that the decision to issue a two-week ultimatum to the government was jointly taken by the NLC and TUC.

He noted that the right thing after the expiration of the warning on Thursday (today) was for the leaders of the two unions to review the situation and agree on the way forward prior to convening their respective national executive councils’ meetings.
TUC tackles Ajaero

It read, “We are writing to address a matter of mutual concern and our disappointment regarding the recent unilateral issuance of two days’ national protest with specified dates.

"You will recall that both centres issued a joint statement with a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government. This ultimatum will expire on Thursday, February 22nd, and the right thing to do was for both leaders to review the situation and agree on the way forward prior to convening our respective NEC meetings.

"Our respective NEC is made up of highly intelligent individuals who are desirous that we both work together always in our collective interest. Even if we didn’t anticipate our NEC decision meetings, it is our responsibility as leaders to harmonise our positions before jointly going to the press.

“It was our understanding that decisions of such magnitude would be made collectively, ensuring that the interests and perspectives of all parties involved are duly considered.

This is the way other leaders of both centres have worked together from the time of SECSCAN to when TUC was formally registered.’’

The TUC further complained that this was the third time Ajaero would be taking a unilateral decision, adding that various interventions to correct the anomaly had failed.

"It is important to stress that this is the third time such a unilateral declaration has happened under your leadership; we are therefore constrained to formally put this on record as various discussions, communications, and interventions have failed. A first and second time could pass as human error, but a third time would, in our opinion, translate to an intentional act to undermine us.

Again, recall that we requested that both congresses jointly develop an MOU (memorandum of understanding) that will clearly guide and define our collaboration on issues of mutual interest to avoid situations like this, which have not seen the light of day,’’ the TUC stated.

Though the TUC said it was not opposed to the protest declaration, Toro emphasised that the TUC had an issue with the NLC taking a decision on an issue the two unions agreed to work on.

The letter noted, “Comrade President, also note that we are not averse to the issuance of your resolution because our members equally feel the pain, even if it’s a weeklong national strike, but we have a huge problem with the unilateral declaration for a process we both mooted and agreed to.

“Because our members are equally concerned about the rising cost of living and not particularly the ultimatum, why can’t we see through the ultimatum that expires within the same period before jointly addressing other issues of mutual concern or, at worst, consolidating them?

Politics / Gowon To Nigerians: “Tinubu Needs More Time To Get Things Done” by Kuginzi: 9:37pm On Feb 21
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), says it is too early to criticize President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Addressing journalists at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, Gowon appealed to Nigerians to give President Tinubu more time to deliver on his campaign promises.

Gowon noted that he was visiting Tinubu for the first time after his inauguration, adding that discussions revolved around matters concerning peace and security within the West African sub-region.

Responding to questions about his advice to the President regarding the prevailing national circumstances, Gowon acknowledged the existing challenges but stressed that it’s too early to anticipate perfection.

“I was telling him that there’s no Nigerian leader that can get there, that will not get all of these, all that is being said about him. But certainly, there is no doubt about all that one has heard and seen from various media. I think the government is trying its best to deal with the various problems of the country,” Gowon said.

“But with Nigerians, don’t worry, you will get criticised but people who get there know better than you know. I think all one can say to Nigerians is that they have to give the President time to get things done and it is too early to sort of say a perfect result will be achieved. That is my opinion.

“At least, if I remembered, I was told that I was too slow, fighting the war and that probably Nigeria would not make it and we should seek for discussion. Well, did we do it or not? They probably did not know the problem there on the ground there,” he added.

Education / Hunger: ‘you’re Pushing Nigeria Towards Anarchy’ – ASUU Warns FG by Kuginzi: 9:15pm On Feb 21
By Muhammad Bukar

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Kano Zone, has warned President Bola Tinubu that the country is drifting towards anarchy and chaos due to untold hunger and starvation among the Nigerian populace.

The union warned that the government’s adoption of the neo-liberal policies of the IMF and World Bank would in no time plunge the country into serious anarchy and uncertainty.

The coordinator of ASUU, Kano Zone, Dr Abdulkadir Muhammad, stated this during an emergency press conference at the end of a zonal meeting comprising the seven universities in the zone on Wednesday in Kano where contentious issues were discussed by the Union.

According to Muhammad: “We, as intellectuals, will not join in the current protests across the country, but rather, we will team up with civil society organisations and NGOs to compel government to drop the policies.”

He said further: “We will use all available legal means to compel government to drop these anti-people IMF-World Bank policies, because the nation, whether you like it or not, is drafting gradually into anarchy while the President and his teams are making excuses.”

ASUU also called on the President to faithfully implement the content of the agreement it freely signed with the union, describing it as the only way to end strikes in Nigerian universities.

Issues in the agreement include the renegotiation of the Federal Government-ASUU 2009 agreement, which was reached when the exchange rate to the dollar was N146.7, which currently has risen above N1,700, a development the union said has eroded their salary by 90 per cent.

He said further that ASUU lamented the refusal of the Nigerian government to sign a draft agreement reached with the union, even after changing the leaders of the negotiation committee several times.

"Therefore, ASUU calls on the President Tinubu-led administration to immediately set in motion the process of upward-reviewing and signing of the Nimi Briggs Committee’s renegotiated draft agreement as a mark of goodwill and to forestall industrial crisis and restore hope for Nigeria’s public universities,” Muhammad stated.
He confirmed that ASUU members have started receiving partial payments of their seven-and-a-half-month withheld salaries while calling on government to pay the remaining balance.

In the same vein, the Kano zone ASUU called on the Kaduna State Government to immediately and unconditionally pay the withheld May to September 2022 salaries of staff of Kaduna State University.
Among other issues, they also called on the government to urgently review the Nigeria University Commission, NUC, Act to check the proliferation of universities in the country in the absence of adequate provision for funding.

Politics / Igbo Fed Up With Nigeria, Won’t Join Hardship Protest – IPOB by Kuginzi: 5:45am On Feb 21
By Ikenna Obianeri

The separatist Indigenous People of Biafra has urged people in the South-East not to join the festering protests by Nigerians against the current economic hardship in the country under the government of President Bola Tinubu.

The separatist group warned that such protests must not take place in the southeastern states because Igbo had long lost interest in Nigeria and were only waiting for an opportunity to leave.

The group made the claim in a statement on Tuesday by its spokesman, Emma Powerful.

Powerful warned that anyone who organised any protest against economic hardship in the South-East would put Ndigbo in danger.

The country has in recent times witnessed increasing agitation and protests over the rising cost of living and skyrocketing prices of foodstuffs.

However, the apex socio-cultural Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Monday, called on the Igbo people not to join any such protests against the Tinubu-led Federal Government.

Ohanaeze urged Nigerians to exercise patience with Tinubu.

In a statement on Tuesday, IPOB spokesman “cautions the people of Biafra not to join any protest against hunger in Nigeria in any South-East territory.”

Powerful said, “The current hardship in Nigeria should be the concern of Nigerians, not Biafrans. Biafrans are no longer interested in the affairs of Nigeria. Biafrans were abused, intimidated, beaten, killed and denied voting rights during the election of this present government. Ndigbo were told to wait, that it was not their turn to rule.

“Anyone who organises any protest against economic hardship in Biafraland will put Biafrans in danger. During the #EndSARS protest, the Federal Government accused Ndigbo of attempting to destroy Nigeria with violence. We don’t want such profiling and targeting to repeat because of Ndigbo’s participation in any Nigerian mass protest.

"Ndigbo should leave the current economic hardship in the contraption called Nigeria for Nigerians to deal with because this hardship is what God Almighty has in store for Nigeria for the crimes they have committed against Biafrans between 1967 to 1970 and up to date.

“We understand that Ndigbo are equally affected by the economic hardship arising from the reckless and thoughtless economic policies of the government, but God is still seeing Biafrans through. We are worried about the suffering of other tribes, but there is nothing we can do. The current situation is why Biafrans are fighting for freedom. Nevertheless, we must apply wisdom.”

The group further said anyone or group that wants to organise a protest for Nigeria’s hardship should kindly go to the northern or western part of the country and stage such protests there.

“Our region is battling the state-sponsored insecurity, kidnappings, and killings by the Federal Government’s agencies and agents, including terrorists. We have much on our hands to do. We will not allow anyone or any group to use the arrangement of protests to import more agents of destabilisation into our territory,” it said.

Health / British-nigerian Doctor Faces Tribunal In Manchester For Having Sex With Patient by Kuginzi: 9:17pm On Feb 20
British-Nigerian cosmetic doctor Oluwafemi "Tijion" Esho has been accused of having sex with a “vulnerable” patient at one of his clinics after having an improper emotional relationship with her.

According to Daily Mail, Dr Esho, also exchanged a series of X-rated messages with the woman - a sex worker - and promised to give her botox in return for sex.

The medical tribunal, in Manchester, heard how the woman provided sex services through Only Fans and webcams and had gone to the doctor - who boasts a host of celebrity clients and is known as Dr Oluwafemi Esho - because she had heard about a "designer lip" procedure which he provides at his clinics in Harley Street, Wimbledon, Newcastle and Dubai.

After an appointment in July 2019, she started following him on Instagram and the doctor would would respond to her posts with 'strong, sexual content', Chloe Hudson, for the GMC, said.

The woman - known only as Patient A - messaged him about recovering from her lips procedure.

She said that further texts showed that Dr Esho was 'building' his sex chat with the patient, whom he met while she was working at a club, and she would send him videos and photos of her in 'states of UnCloth'.

Ms Hudson said the GMC's case was the messages showed he was 'keen to receive the services' the patient was offering at the same time he was treating her.

But she said he was aware it was wrong because he told the patient in another message: “But if we do for mls I break the doctor's code and I'd be a dead man.”

Other messages were more sexually explicit with the doctor talking about performing sex acts on himself and describing his fantasies about sex with the patient.

Ms Hudson said Dr Esho was aware she was 'vulnerable' due to her job, with her appearance generating her income, and her mental health being affected if she wasn't 'satisfied' with how she looked.

Dr Esho is said to have arranged an appointment at his Newcastle clinic 'because it was quiet' and they wouldn't be disturbed where the pair had sex.

Afterwards, he said to have told her that he could "get away why giving her botox in exchange for sexual services."

But he denies the allegation, along with charges he made inappropriate comments about the patient's bottom during another appointment, rubbed himself against her, and took his penis out of his trousers and allowed her to perform a sex act on him.

The tribunal heard how the woman had complained to the GMC because she believed he had 'taken advantage of her vulnerable position' because her image was important to her her job.

Dr Esho admits four of the ten charges against him in that between July 2019 and February 2022 he behaved inappropriately by exchanging messages with the patient.

He also admits having an 'improper emotional relationship' with her between July 2019 and May 2022 and that his conduct in relation to both allegations was 'sexually motivated'.

The tribunal - due to take 15 days - continues

Politics / Protest: Police Warn Against Violence As Labour Gives Fresh Condions by Kuginzi: 5:38am On Feb 19
The police authorities have said they would not condone any form of violence during the planned two-day demonstration declared by organised Labour in protest against the hardships and high cost of living in the country.

The police handed down the Riot Act on Sunday as the Nigeria Labour Congress gave fresh conditions ahead of the minimum wage negotiation commencing on Monday (today.)

The police warning is coming against the backdrop of the alarm by the African Development Bank that rising prices of fuel and other commodities could lead to social unrest in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Angola, and Kenya.

The AfDB sounded the warning in its macroeconomic performance and outlook for 2024 in which it projected Africa’s economy to grow higher than the 3.2 per cent recorded in 2023.

The AfDB projected that growth on the continent will rebound to 3.8 per cent in 2024.

However, the bank cautioned that an increase in fuel and commodity prices occasioned by currency depreciation or subsidy removal in Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, and Ethiopia could trigger internal conflicts.

It stated, “Internal conflicts and violence could also result from rising prices for fuel and other commodities due to weaker domestic currencies and reforms.

"For instance, the removal of fuel subsidies in Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria and the resulting social costs has led to social unrest driven by opposition to government policy.”

On February 8, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress gave a two-week ultimatum to the government to implement the agreements on palliatives for workers to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal and other policies reached last October.

The unions said they had mobilised their members for the nationwide protests slated for February 27 and 28.

The organised labour lamented that millions of Nigerian workers were facing hunger, erosion of purchasing power, and insecurity due to reforms that drove up inflation.

The NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, said the protest would begin a week after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government which will expire on February 23.

Ajaero, who spoke during a briefing with journalists in Abuja, said the decision followed an emergency National Executive Council meeting on the state of the economy and matters related to insecurity in the country.

Sunday PUNCH had on February 18 (yesterday) reported that organized labour was prepared to lower its demand for N1m minimum wage for workers in the country in line with realities on the ground which include high costs of living, inflation, naira devaluation, and the general economic shocks.

Workers’ hardship

But the Head of Information of the NLC, Benson Upah, who spoke to one of our correspondents on Sunday, insisted that the committee must come up with a minimum wage that would reflect economic realities and address the hardship of workers.

Asked about the committee, which would begin its sitting today, he said, “Our expectations are the national minimum wage negotiations and the conclusions will reflect the socio-economic realities of our times.”

Also, a top official of the NLC who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue,, said, “if the Federal Government wants to pay workers anything, anything the government is paying them that cannot take care of the workers is no longer salary, it is a poverty salary.”

He said, “A living wage is that wage that will take care of all the basic needs of the worker and also leave small things for savings for rainy days for the worker, that is why whatever the trade unions are going to demand is going to be scientifically determined,” he said.

He stated, ‘’It (the minimum wage) is going to be based on the cost of living. It will be based on the objective reality that the Nigerian worker encounters daily. How much does it take to care for an average family in Nigeria? That is a family that consists of two parents and four children.

He said, “The Nigeria Labour Congress, already last month sent out questionnaires to all the state councils in Nigeria and the state councils have also sent the questionnaires to all the local governments in the 774 local governments in Nigeria to obtain what it cost them to take care of their basic needs.

"The consumer price Index is also one of the factors that the NLC is using. Then we are also looking at real wages. In essence, the N30,000 minimum wage that was paid in 2019, what is the real value of that N30,000 in 2024?” he said.

Ahead of the protests, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, on Sunday, held a meeting with labour leaders at the command headquarters.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who disclosed this to one of our correspondents, said the union gave an assurance that the protest would be carried out within the ambit of the law.

He added that a team of policemen would be on the ground to maintain law and order.

He added that a team of policemen would be on the ground to maintain law and order.

Hundeyin stated, “We have no fears. The Commissioner of Police met with NLC and TUC today and we had a lengthy discussion. We are certain that there won’t be a breakdown of law and order.

"But notwithstanding, we will be on the ground to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.”

Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, on Sunday, said he would be meeting with the labour leaders in the state on Monday (today) over the protest.

According to Yesufu: “The people that were in multi-dimensional poverty during Buhari, can you imagine what state they are in now? Tinubu rigged his way in to destroy Nigeria.

Nigerians at different fora have been lamenting over the current hardships being experienced in the country.

Nairaland / General / Man Sticks 68 Match-Sticks In His Nose To Break Guiness World Record by Kuginzi: 5:44pm On Feb 17
A Danish man has earned an unusual Guinness World Records title after he managed to stuff 68 matchsticks into his nostrils.

Peter von Tangen Buskov, 39, was awarded the title for the most matches held in the nose, surpassing Guinness World Records’ goal of 45 matchsticks, UPI.com reports.

"Surprisingly it didn’t really hurt,” Buskov told GWR. “I have fairly large nostrils and quite stretchy skin. I’m sure that helped a lot.”

Buskov said he chose the matchstick challenge after researching different world records he could attempt. He said he doesn’t think he can currently beat his own record, but he hasn’t ruled out trying again in the future.

“For me, an increase in capacity would require some training, or perhaps my nose will grow as I get older,” he said.

Politics / Tinubu Working Hard To Make Nigeria Better, Secured, Says Matawalle by Kuginzi: 4:58pm On Feb 17
Musa Umar Bologi

President Bola Tinubu is working round the clock to see that Nigeria is better and well secured, Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle has said.

The Minister said the President has given priority to the safety of citizens by equipping the Military to function optimally and charged the Service Chiefs to rebuild the capacity of the security services.

Matawalle, however, cautioned the citizens against using inflammatory comments against the government, as such comments would have severed consequences on the country.

The Minister said this in a statement from his office against the backdrop of some unguarded utterances coming from some sections of the populace

He said: “Such comments are incisive and destructive and can exacerbate tensions and lead to violence in our beloved nation.

"The minister also said that President Tinubu understands the nexus between insecurity and poverty and that was why government is increasing its investment in MSMEs.

He continued: ‘’This is in addition to the 15 Million vulnerable households that will be added to the extended social safety net.”

"Just a few days ago, the President approved the creation of a committee that included the State Governors and Federal representatives that will explore among other things the possibility of establishing State Police that will help in checking mating crimes.”

The Minister underscored the importance of unity, stating that what affects one Nigerian ultimately affects the entire West African sub-region and the African continent.

“It is imperative for us as Nigerians to embrace dialogue and understanding in addressing our differences.

We must remember that our strength lies in our diversity, and only through unity can we overcome the challenges facing our nation,” he said.

Acknowledging the global nature of the challenges, Matawalle reassured the public that the President and his team “are working tirelessly to alleviate the burdens on the Nigerian populace.”

The minister urged Nigerians to prioritize peace, tolerance, and national cohesion in their words and actions, as “we collectively strive towards building a prosperous and harmonious Nigeria.”

Politics / Hardship: Nigeria Almost On The Road To Venezuela – PDP Governors by Kuginzi: 8:02pm On Feb 12
Governors elected on the platform of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rose from a meeting in Abuja, on Monday, with a call on President Bola Tinubu to immediately put in place initiatives that will bring the crisis to an end.

Addressing journalists at Oyo Governors lodge in Asokoro, Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Muhammed, said the meeting deliberated on various issues of interest and concern to the country.

Bala lamented that Nigeria is almost on the road to Venezuela and called on the Federal Government to work with relevant stakeholders with a view to bringing succor to Nigerians.

He said: “The meeting reviewed the State of the Nation and noted the hardship being faced by Nigerians as a result of the economic and security challenges facing the nation.

"The Forum consequently urges the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency embark on initiatives involving all the sub national governments to bring a lasting solution to the crises,”
adding that the PDP Governors will continue to play their part in the effort to bring security and succour to Nigerians.

The Governors also reiterated the call for State Police, with appropriate safeguards to avoid any abuse or overreach by any tier of government.

The Forum also decried the falling value of the Naira and requested the “monetary and fiscal authorities to find appropriate solutions.”

Meanwhile, answering questions from journalists, Governor Bala flanked by other PDP Governors said, “Nigerians took a decision to bring the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the centre and we respect their sensibilities and sense of judgement. What we are doing is giving positive criticism to the obnoxious policies of the federal government.

"But at the onset of this administration, we supported the removal of subsidy, we believed that there were safeguards, we believed that if we took collective decisions, we should go by it. But certainly, we have seen that it is a free fall for the naira. The cost of living is going high, we are almost on the road to Venezuela.

“So, we are giving concrete opposition but not insulting anybody. But ultimately the decision squarely rests with Nigerians and other organs in the country to make sure that we do things that will bring succour to all of us.”

He also said many things were being done across party lines, on bi-partisan basis, within the Nigeria governors forum, the National Economic Council to “make sure that we cushion the effects of some of these policies. We have reached out to our people and opened the food reserves in a manner that it will provide some succour to our people at the lower level.”

He said, “The Commissioner of Police who vowed to end the cult-related killings in Ihiala the same way he stamped out the menace in Awka Capital City has directed the Crack Squad to go all out against the cultists and clip their wings.

"He assured members of the public that their security will continue to be the topmost priority of the Command.”

Politics / I Helped Him Prepare For Traditional Wedding – Peter Obi On Herbert Wigwe by Kuginzi: 7:42am On Feb 11
Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has opened up on his relationship with the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Roosevelt Herbert Wigwe.

Obi expressed deep sadness over the tragic passing of Wigwe, who he described as a dear friend, recalling how he once helped the Access Bank boss prepare for his traditional wedding.

DAILY POST reports that Wigwe, the Co-founder of Access Bank and the founder, Wigwe University, alongside his wife, Chizoba, son and lawyer, Abimbola Ogunbanjo died in a ghastly helicopter crash on Friday.

The chopper was headed to Las Vegas when it crashed near a border city between Nevada and California on Friday night.

The US government confirmed all on board dead as no survivor has been located as of Saturday morning.

“This loss is profoundly felt across the nation. I first met Herbert during his early days, on the brink of starting his marital journey. I vividly remember assisting him in preparing for his traditional wedding and being there for the ceremony with his wife, Chizoba, from Achina, Anambra State,” he recalled in a post on X.

"Since then, I’ve maintained a connection to his endeavors in my own modest ways. Herbert, a determined and forward-thinking individual, led Access Bank to new heights following his brother Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.

“His noteworthy contributions extended beyond the professional realm, with commendable philanthropic efforts in health and education, exemplified by the establishment of Wigwe University, showcasing his deep commitment to education as a driver of development.

"The loss of such an exceptional individual reminds us of life’s fleeting nature, encouraging us to live with a purpose that contributes to the betterment of humanity. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Herbert, his beloved wife, and his son,” he added.

Politics / Citizens Groan As Rice Hits N77,000 Per Bag by Kuginzi: 5:42am On Feb 11
By Godfrey George, Temitope Adetunji

This is not the best of times for Nigerian families, who have had to adopt bizarre cost-cutting measures to cope with the recent hardship occasioned by the dramatic hike in the prices of goods and services.

Several of them lamented that their income could no longer take care of their daily needs, adding that the prices of staples had almost tripled in the market. Rice, which is arguably one of the commonest consumed staples in the country, has risen to N77,000 per bag.

In December, the National Bureau of Statistics stated that the country’s inflation rate hit a 27-year high as headline inflation rose to 28.9 per cent.

The December headline inflation rate showed an increase of 0.72 percent when compared to the previous month’s rate.

In recent years, food prices have been on the rise across Nigeria. The situation deteriorated due to the impact of government policies such as the removal of subsidy on petrol and the free fall of the naira in the foreign exchange market.

Foodstuffs sellers in major cities, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH, lamented that the cost of a bag of rice had risen almost 200 per cent.

Sunday PUNCH gathered that long grain rice, which used to sell for between N45,000 and N50,000 in November, now costs over N70,000, putting a huge pressure on the consumers.

The unprecedented increase in the prices of commodities has caused nationwide hardship, with residents of some major cities taking to the streets to register their displeasure.

From Kano to Niger, Rivers to and Osun, residents protested the hardship on the streets.

In Niger State, for instance, residents of Suleja took to the street last Wednesday to register their displeasure over the high cost of living in the country.

Wednesday’s protest came two days after a similar protest in Minna, the state capital.

The Organised Labour on Friday insisted on embarking on an industrial action to register its displeasure over the current economic hardship in the country.

Although the Federal Government has ordered the distribution of grains and other items to cushion the effects of the economic crisis across the country, citizens are still grappling with the hike in the prices of commodities.

Lagos residents lament

In Lagos, some residents, who spoke to one of our correspondents, lamented that the incessant increase in the prices of foodstuffs had strained their finances.

This is as they urged the government to intervene before things got out of hand.

A mother of two, Mrs Mede Orunmade, said this present situation had made life unbearable for her and her family.

Orunmade stated that it was as though the country was at war, adding that the hike in the prices of foodstuffs was continuous.

She said, “It has been a hard time for me and my family. The country hasn’t been in the right position for the past eight months. I have been struggling with my family to clear up our electricity bills. Coupled with the ever-rising price of foodstuffs, I don’t know if I am going to survive.

"I used to operate an online business but it has packed up. There’s no gain on any business in Nigeria like before anymore. I am just striving to survive.

“The surprising thing is that a small carton of noodles is now N7,000 to N7,800. We used to buy it for between N1,900 and N2,000 in the past. It is so shocking that the price of a bag of rice continues to change almost every minute.

"A bag of rice five months ago was around N49,000, but it increased to N68,000. As of yesterday (Thursday), my supplier said it had risen to N70,000. The cheapest thing we used to buy before, garri, is now N2,500 for a paint bucket. It was N800 before.”

Another Lagos resident and father of four, Mr Taiwo Babatunde, said he could no longer afford to feed his family like he used to.

He asked the government to come to her aid, as her suffering was becoming too much.

A housewife simply identified as Wunmi said, “The government needs to come to our aid now as everything is very hard. A bag of beans is now N65,000, which is three times the price it used to be. Also, groundnut oil is now N8,400 for four litres, and a bag of rice is now N70,000.

"This is getting too much. We hope the government will come to help us.”

Further findings by our correspondents revealed that a kilogramme of Semovita, which sold for N800 four months ago, now sells for N1,200.

The price of beans also increased from around N1,500 to N4,200 per tin.

Some women, who spoke to one of our correspondents at the Ibafo Market, Ogun State, lamented the difficulties they were facing in purchasing items from the market with little resources.

A trader, Mrs Bamise Olaiya, said, “The prices of the foodstuffs are just annoying. I came to the market with N8,000 to buy some food items but the prices have changed between last week and now. Just last week, I bought three portions of tomatoes for N1,200 and pepper for N1,000, but today I have spent N4,200 for the same items. Pepper grinding has also increased from N200 to N300.”

Businesses struggling – Traders
Entrepreneurs across various sectors are feeling the pinch as they struggle to navigate through the challenging times.

A skincare consultant, Mr Damilola Olasunkanmi, said the current economic situation had almost put her out of business.

“I don’t get customers like I used to. My customers are cutting down on skincare purchases to prioritise other essentials like food and transportation, and that is affecting sales significantly. Restocking has become a daunting task as costs continue to soar,” he said.

Similarly, a dental therapist managing a private clinic in Iwo, Osun State, Dr Oluwafemi Ogunsakin, noted that the surge in the cost of his services had deterred patients from seeking dental care.

A foodstuffs retailer, Mrs Ore Ilerioluwa, lamented that the increase in prices had continued to threaten the operation of her business.

She said, “I buy foodstuffs from the market wholesale and sell them in a little shop I run at home. But these daily changes in the prices of items are affecting me so much that I find it difficult to buy the items.

“Do you know that three days ago I bought a carton of spaghetti for N13,000, today I was told it was N14,000. Now, when you add to the cost of each one today, by the time you return, the prices will have gone up again.

"So, you will be forced to add more money. A bag of beans is now N120,000, whereas it was N70,000 before. People are going for anything cheap now. Many families are hungry.”

Another foodstuffs seller at the Magboro Market in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State, Sukurat Akanni, complained that prices of many items had doubled.

Another trader, Adeola Israel, noted that a bag of brown beans had increased to N62,000, while a paint rubber now costs N6,200.

She lamented that she no longer made as much sales as she used to in the past.

Govt concerned – A’Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, said that his administration had concluded plans to establish a bulk purchase agency to regulate prices of foodstuffs and bring them within the reach of the citizens.

The governor announced this on Friday during the Nigerian Unity Conference 2024 tagged, ‘That We May be One’, organised by the 10th Episcopal District, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, at the Ibom Hall, Uyo.

He said that a bill to establish the agency would soon be sent to the state House of Assembly for legal backing to enable the agency to intervene and stem skyrocketing food prices in the state.

Kwara gives palliatives

The Kwara State Government delivered 10,000 bags of 10kg rice to labour unions for onward distribution to their members.

This was disclosed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Friday, following an engagement with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

In their separate remarks, the state chairmen of the Trade Union Congress, Joseph Meshach, and the Nigerian Labour Congress, Saheed Olayinka, commended the governor for his continuous efforts to provide relief to the people in the state.

Anambra residents groan

Residents of Anambra State are battling with the soaring costs of food items like rice, beans, garri, palm oil, tomatoes, onions, fruits, and others in the various markets across the state.

One of our correspondents, who spoke to residents and marketers in Awka, the state capital, and Onitsha on Saturday, gathered that the high cost of items was attributed to the rise in the value of the dollar, just as the situation dampened the mood of the people and forced them to ration food.

A visit to the Relief Market in Onitsha, and the Eke-Awka Market in Awka, showed that a 50kg bag of foreign rice was sold for N72,000 as against N51,000 a month ago. A full bag of iron beans was sold for N110,000 as against N89,000 a month ago.

Crime / Their Bullets Couldn’t Penetrate My Body - Oba Adebayo Fatoba On How He Escaped by Kuginzi: 5:47am On Feb 06
Oba Adebayo Fatoba, the Alara of Ara-Ekiti, in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, has narrated how he escaped from the kidnappers who killed his colleagues.

Fatoba, along with two other monarchs from the state – Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti in Oye LG and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti in Ajoni, Ikole Local Government of Ekiti State, were attacked by the gunmen while returning from a meeting.

The other two monarchs were killed by the assailants while Fatoba escaped.

Speaking on Awikonko TV Live, in a now viral video, the Oba said he did not disappear from the scene of the incident, as has been speculated.

The traditional ruler described his late colleagues as brave leaders who sacrificed their lives for the peace of their communities, Ekiti and Yoruba land.

Narrating how the incident occurred, Oba Fatoba said: “We have about 25 communities in the Ikole-Ekiti and there was a security committee which I am the chairman of and one of the deceased monarchs was the vice chairman.

"There have been repeated attacks on farmers in our areas because we have large forests here. So, when the attack was becoming too frequent on our people, we sought permission from the police to intervene and the permission was granted.

"So, when we received another report of an attack, where one of our people was killed between Ayebode and Ayedun, we decided to move in. We had visited the community where the incident happened. We were discussing how the late Onimojo, an Associate Professor, was planning to move from the Federal University of Technology in Akure (FUTA) to the Federal University at Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) on Irele road when they appeared from nowhere.

"We did not know they were many because about three of them pointed guns at us. We tried to struggle with them but they began to fire at us from different angles. Though the bullets did not enter, but I realised that they were fully armed with sophisticated weapons. We ran from the scene to a checkpoint mounted by our local hunters.

But seeing the firearms in the hands of the kidnappers, the local hunters couldn’t advance. I even asked one of our local hunters to return fire but his Dane gun could not work. By the time I looked back, I saw my fellow obas in the pool of their blood.

"It was really a very sad experience. My colleague monarchs sacrificed their lives and died for their people. I would admit that the bullets did not penetrate through my body but I did not disappear, as being speculated

Politics / Tinubu's Supporters Attack Aisha Yesufu Online For Saying Nigeria H No President by Kuginzi: 8:43pm On Feb 04
Supporters of President Bola Tinubu and other tweeps have unleashed an attack on human rights activist and co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, for saying that Nigeria has no president and that there is no country anymore.

SaharaReporters on Friday reported that Yesufu while featuring on a Channels TV programme, said that Nigeria remained only a carcass of a country where life is short and brutish.

Yesufu said, “There is no country anymore. As we are today, Nigeria is gone. What we have is a carcass and life is short and British. We are all on edge and we are the victims who a lot of people refuse to see coming to us and unfortunately, we do not have a president.

“We have someone who rigged himself into office, an illegitimate President and who doesn't care. Anyone who is ready to do anything - snatch it, run with it to get into office.

“They don't care about the people. There is no empathy, that is what we are seeing today. Nigeria has gotten into a place where you are not even sure that you are going to see the next day because you might be a victim, you might be taken away, even from inside your own house. That is where Nigeria is now.”

Also, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Yesufu said, “Nigeria does not have a President. That’s the grim reality.”

Reacting to Yesufu’s post, a blogger and social media personality, Dr Olukemi Olunloyo, said that Nigeria has a president and that Yesufu’s post was being discussed at the Department of State Services (DSS).

She asked Yesufu to focus on herself and her family to avoid becoming a political prisoner.

Olunloyo, who asked Yesufu to leave Nigeria if she does not like the country anymore, wrote, “We actually have one. Aisha leave Nigeria if you don't like it anymore. They are discussing your tweets at the DSS now. Don't incite people. Focus on yourself and family. Don't be a ‘political prisoner’".

But Yesufu, who quickly fired back, said, “Kemi @Kemiolunloyo it's been a long time you brought your nonsense to my TL. Welcome back.

“Please tell your so-called DSS contacts that they can't do anything that kidnappers and terrorists are not already doing. Arrest me? I won't need to pay ransom. Kill me? I was born to die. Leave Nigeria?

“The illegitimate President who forged his certificate and found to be part of drug dealing is the one that needs to leave Nigeria.

"Very pathetic mindset you displayed telling me to face my family. Why don't you take that advice and face yours? By the way, my family is not made of cowards.”

In another post, Yesufu said, “Imagine the very pathetic mindset that makes you tell someone to leave the country because they said Nigeria has no President. Is a certificate forger found involved in drug dealing who rigged his way to be declared President and has failed so woefully that Buhari is even said to be better in less than 7 months a President?

“It is Tinubu that ran out of the country before that will run away again, not Aisha Yesufu.

“Terrorists just killed a young lady awaiting her university final results and you think at 50 I am going to be afraid of death? Am I better than those abducted and killed by terrorists?

“Na una dey fear Tinubu and DSS. I can't waste my fear like that.”

She went further to say, “I rather be a political prisoner than a prisoner of certificate forgery or drug dealing. If Nigeria was a country with its act together, Tinubu should be in prison not Aso Villa masquerading as president.

“@Kemiolunloyo should ask the DSS discussing my matter whether they have been paid their allowances.”

Olunloyo, who replied Yesufu said, “Aisha Yesufu’s fans are abusing me well well. Anyone remember the tweet when myself and Omojuwa were the only ones monetizing tweets? Aisha’s fans are making me $18.75 daily on that tweet. This is why I always call Nigerians daft #SBNI Smart but not intelligent.”

But Yesufu said, “SBNI describes you better than the people you describe. I am glad to help you increase your earnings to over a thousand dollars daily. You desperately need it.

"Feel free to use my name to shore up your earnings. Anytime I don’t have anything more important to do, I will reply you.”

Another X user, @TaxDoctorNG wrote, “I was thinking the president would have you picked up. Anyone that supports you, should join you in jail. Dash you the attention, you're dangerously seeking for free. Then I realized, you don't worth one second of the president's time.”

But not giving up, Yesufu responded saying, “I will gladly go to the prison. Those in prisons are freer and more protected than you are. Make use of the oxygen you breathe and ask them to do so. At least, I will not be paying ransom.”

Another X user, @jide_omiyale wrote, “You are going too fast than your shadow. All those praising you will never condemn the secret service when they arrest you. Keep it up, since na only one food you need, your family will keep supplying it but that exercise might not be allowed. Just keep berating the DSS.”

But Yesufu said, “DSS also called SSS is the most useless of security agencies in Nigeria. They only have intelligence when there is a planned protest and nowhere to be found when it comes to terrorists and kidnappers.

"I live in Abuja so they don't need too much to arrest me. I eat once a day and need small space for exercise. I won't be too much burden. If they decide to kill me, I have recently lost 20kg so my corpse will not be too heavy for them. Pathetic low grade intelligence agency.”

She said in another post, “DSS aka SSS did nothing when terrorists threatened to come and arrest Buhari, a then sitting President.

“The cowards only know how to brandish guns to protect politicians or come after unarmed protesters.

“The terrorists with AK 47s in the forests terrorizing Nigerians they are afraid to face.”

Crime / We Still Need N8m For Ransom, Parents Of Abducted Ekiti Pupils Cry Out by Kuginzi: 7:47am On Feb 04
Group of School, Emure-Ekiti have appealed to Ekiti State Governments to come to their aid to rescue the victims.
General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, rained the fire of God on the assassins of Ekiti traditional rulers on Friday night.

The gunmen had on Monday ambushed a bus conveying the schoolchildren and staff of the school back to their homes at Eporo on the road and whisked nine among the occupants away, leaving the bus on the road.

The kidnappers were said to have reached out to the families of the abducted pupils and demanded N100m ransom for each of the nine persons held captive in their den.

The abductors, however, on Thursday reduced the ransom to N15m for all the abductees with a threat to kill the victims if the money was not paid on time.

But, the embattled parents on Saturday while receiving representatives of the Ekiti State government expressed fears over the threat by the kidnappers that if they failed to pay the ransom on time they would kill their children.

Mr. Adebisi Jegede, whose wife and 12-year-old son are in the kidnappers’ den said that the kidnappers had promised not to accept anything less than N15m as ransom.

Jegede, who said that the parents could see the efforts of individuals, and communities said, “With help here and there, we have realized N7m, we begged the kidnappers to accept N7m, but they refused. We are still looking for a sum of N8 million for it to be completed so that we can rescue these people.

“Whenever the kidnappers contact us on the phone, they will be hitting the people with them so that we can hear their cries and feel their pains and take the money to them on time. We need help because the kidnappers told us that they will not release our people if the money is less than N15m.

"We want the government to please remedy this situation for the safety of our children and wives.”

Mr. Oluwadare Oniya, father of the abducted nine-year-old girl, said,“We plead with the government to help us today so that these people can rejoin us today. There is a problem, let us focus first on how the children can be released, after that the government knows what can be done to arrest the perpetrators.

My child there is nine years old, with that age, you can imagine the situation she will be in because when we talk with the abducted persons, they tell us that the kidnappers don’t give them food or water. It is going to be a week now. We have tried, but our best appeared not up to what the kidnappers want”.

Also, Pastor Clement Adebisi, who was anxious over his wife, said, “We are appealing to the government to come to our aid so that we can rescue the kidnapped persons today (Saturday). We are getting worried about the condition of the children.

"We plead with the government to come to our aid. We have offered all that we could raise, but they said it was not enough, and insisted on N15m. That is why we want the government to come to our aid so that they can be released today,” he said.

Addressing the embattled parents and families, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Interest Groups, Princess Toyin Agbaje-Malomo assured the parents that their loved ones would soon be rescued to rejoin them.

Agbaje-Malomo said, “You are not alone, we are together in it. The governor is assiduously working on it so that our r people in captivity will be rescued to rejoin families and loved ones.

"The governor is with you, he feels your pains. He has asked me to assure you that based on ongoing efforts, all of them will be returned to you safely in no time. That is the assurance I am here to relay to you today,” she added.

Adeboye: Fire of God will consume those attacking traditional rulers

Pastor Enoch Adeboye declared that peace would elude anybody attempting to meddle with the nation’s monarchy.

“The fire of God will consume all those trying to mess around with our traditional rulers,” the Pentecostal preacher declared during the church’s monthly Holy Ghost Service programme tagged: ‘From The Mountain Top 2’.

“Because as far as God is concerned, traditional rulers are anointed,” Adeboye said.

Two prominent monarchs in Ekiti, Oba David Ogunsola of Esun-Ekiti and Oba Olatunde Olusola of Imojo-Ekiti, were assassinated on Monday while returning from a meeting in Irele-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Some pupils and teachers were also abducted in the interconnected attacks.

Security forces, including the police, have sent an armoured vehicle and a helicopter to Ekiti and promised to apprehend those responsible.

Nigerians are still calling for prompt justice and a stop to the pandemic of kidnappings and killings in the nation.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha said this during a meeting with top officials of the ministry in Abuja.

She urged the ministry’s leadership to adopt a private sector-driven approach, emphasising efficiency and productivity in fulfilling the ministry’s objectives.

In a statement on Saturday by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister, Emameh Gabriel, she said there was a need for a result-oriented approach within the ministry akin to that found in the private sector.

Onyejeocha said the shift was essential to fulfilling the proposed achievements outlined in President Bola Tinubu’s eight points agenda.

She said: “We need concrete results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our programmes. Business as usual won’t cut it. We must work as people in the private sector; focused, accountable, and results-oriented. We are currently engaging development partners.”

The minister emphasised the ministry’s crucial role in achieving the President’s agenda, aligning with six of its eight points.

She said: “At the end of every week, I will like to have the report of every department. I have never been in the last position and I don’t want to find myself there. Everybody will fail when the Ministry of Labour cannot account for the people we took out of the street and employed.

"The ministry is committed to taking immediate action to tackle poverty and unemployment. We will hold the Head of every department accountable for the achievements outlined in the president’s agenda.

“Out of the eight Renewed Hope Agenda, Labour is concerned with six. We have a serious task to accomplish. So, we need to work hard on our template. I am passionate about reducing poverty in Nigeria, because our position is one that is directed to humanity.

“Nigerians are tired of conferences, words alone are not enough. What we need now is result, and Nigerians need to see employment and empowerment.

"I am no longer interested in teaching how to fish. I want to see the fish that have been harvested. Nigerians should see the fishes of those who were taught how to fish. Reduction of poverty in Nigeria is waiting for no date. So, all work against poverty and unemployment starts now.”
