According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, State Department, Joy Basu, made this known at a digital news conference with participating journalists.

Basu said that the U.S. was committed to fostering its collaboration with Nigeria to tackle myriad pressing issues and obstacles, which Nigeria, being Africa’s largest economy, was facing.

The envoy said her country was working closely with the U.S. Treasury, Nigerian authorities, and African central banks towards ensuring public and private sector economic restoration, stability, and prosperity across Africa.

Speaking against the backdrop of the recently concluded 16th U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Dallas, Texas, Basu said the U.S. was also working on curbing Africa’s security, infrastructure and energy challenges.

"We just came back from a meeting in Abuja, which was between the Secretaries of State and the United States and is committed to being a good partner of prospect.

"We have made commitments to work on the security situation, infrastructure and energy, which is a common challenge not only in Nigeria but in some other countries in the continent.

“We have made concrete commitments to work on an enabling business environment in Nigeria and to make sure that American companies that are investing in Nigeria are having a transparent experience.

“We are working closely with our U.S. treasury, and with the central banks of African countries, particularly Nigeria and the World Bank, to restore the economy, help the people, and ensure public and private companies to thrive,” she said.

Reta Lewis, President, U.S. Export-Import Bank, in her remarks, highlighted U.S. efforts towards bolstering trade and investment across Africa and emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in fostering stronger U.S.-Africa partnerships.

She disclosed that the U.S. government had earmarked $900 billion for the construction of solar power plants in Africa, being the largest renewable energy project and transaction this year.

Politics / Give South-east Power Or Get Out Of Our Region – IPOB Warns Enugu Distribution C by Kuginzi: 7:26am On May 11
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has asked the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to provide steady power supply in the South East region or shut down and vacate the region immediately.

IPOB made the demand in a statement issued on Friday by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful.

Powerful also lambasted the power distribution company for excessive estimated billing of electricity consumers in the South East.

According to the IPOB spokesperson, EEDC is engaging in what he described as a deceptive strategy to sway the people of the South East by claiming that IPOB criticisms over non-supply of power and extortion of their customers was misinformation.

encourages vandalism because many communities pay through their nose to EEDC to fix the vandalised infrastructures.

“Many faulty power transformers that some villagers bought by themselves that EEDC took for repairs were never returned to the communities.

“The EEDC claimed that no amount was involved in the MOU signed by Anambra State Government and EEDC. We therefore challenge EEDC to publish the same terms of MOU.

“The EEDC further claimed that their Chairman, Emeka Offor was wrongly portrayed. They claimed that their chairman had a testimonial of good works in the South-East but failed to show any evidence of his good works.

“The EEDC must provide adequate light and free prepaid meters across the South East. All the lazy excuses why EEDC are strangulating economic growth in the South-East will no longer be tolerated.

“If EEDC is finding it difficult to provide power to the South-East region based on the challenges they enumerated in their press release, then they should plan to vacate the South-East for another company to take over before we chase them out of the South-East without remorse.”

Politics / Gowon: Nigeria Would Have Been Better If Yar’adua Had Completed His Tenure by Kuginzi: 9:18pm On May 06

A former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has said Nigeria would have been a better country if President Umaru Musa Yar’adua had completed his tenure.

Gowon spoke on Monday during a first President Umaru Musa Yar’adua international leadership conference and awards organised by Global Initiative For Leadership Success in Abuja.

Recall that Yar’adua became president in 2007, but in 2010, he died as a result of ill- health.

Gowon said Yar’adua had achieved significant milestones for Nigeria within his short time in office including granting amnesty to the Niger Delta militants as a way of restoring the economy of the country.

He lamented that though Yar’adua admitted that the process that produced him as president in 2007 was flawed and constituted the Justice Muhammed Uwais Committee for electoral reforms, successive administrations failed to continue with his initiative.

Gowon said, “He was a decent man; a man with absolute integrity. He was an honest man. He did very well and he has to be remembered. He was so honest that he said the process that brought him to power was not right. And he set up a committee. But it was not followed by successive leaders.

"However, I believe that one day, we shall have a solution. He was honey and sincere in dealing with any problem, and he was incorruptible. You can not blame him for corruption; he was clean. His various activities including the amnesty programme that he brought to the Niger Delta ensured our economy was protected.

“His illness and death, I believe if God had allowed him to complete his years in service, I believe Nigeria would have been better. A lot of things would have been better because he meant well for the country. So continue that love for the country and love for one another to make Nigeria great.”

Gowon also decried the spate of insecurity in the country and called on government and security agencies to fish out perpetrators of violent killings, abductions of schoolchildren in the North, and kidnapping for ransom in other parts of the country.

In his welcome address, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Global Initiative For Leadership Success, Gen A.B Mamman, said, “The blatant refusal to adopt and implement in whole this Uwais Committee report is consequential on the ever-faulty governance leadership recruitment system in Nigeria till date, accounting yet for her to remain in doldrums.

"Most public office holders continue to appear at the the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), or the Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) office to answer questions on their tenure and so many reasons.”

Politics / IPOB Warns Ohanaeze Ndigbo Against Apologising To Northern Nigeria Over 1966Coup by Kuginzi: 5:39pm On May 05
The Indigenous People of Biafra has warned pan-Igbo organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo against apologising over the 1966 military coup on behalf of the Igbo people.

IPOB made this known in a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, at the weekend, threatening that an order would be given to treat anyone who identifies themselves as an Ohanaeze Ndigbo member - at home and in the Diaspora - as a criminal and traitor should the organisation apologise to northern Nigeria for the coup.

The group warned the organisation led by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu not to go to Sokoto to apologise to the Fulani people for the coup, which has been tagged as ‘Igbo coup’ in some quarters.

The statement reads in part, "Ohanaeze has crossed the red line by attempting to go and apologize to the Fulani terrorists for what the clueless Ohanaeze called forgiveness from the Caliphate for Igbo military officers involvement in the 1966 coup that led to the death of Sir Ahmadu Bello.

“By the abominable planned visit of Ohaneze Ndigbo will be on record as aggressors instead of victims.”

It said, "Ndigbo never sent military officers to stage a coup for them or to murder on their behalf. Nevertheless, the 1966 coup that was carried out by the young military officers from all the ethnic groups in Nigeria was viciously tagged as Igbo coup. Why was the military coup led by Murtala Muhammed, Babangida, Buhari, Abacha and other Northern military officers not tagged Hausa or Fulani coup?”

"And an order will be given to treat anyone that identifies himself or herself as an Ohanaeze Ndigbo member both at home and in the Diaspora as a criminal and traitor and will be treated as one. In fact, going forward, Ohanaeze Ndigbo should stop speaking or representing Ndigbo,” it added.

However, Iwuanyanwu has said that Ohanaeze never had the intention to apologise for the 1966 coup.

According to him, the coup was strictly a military affair.

Addressing journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital at the weekend, Iwuanyanwu said, “We can’t go to beg anybody. Igbos were killed in that coup. As far as Ohanaeze Ndigbo is concerned, Igbos did not have any affair with the 1966 coup. It was purely a military affair.

“It’s not true, it’s fake news. The man that even carried the fake news has apologised. What happened was that we had a retreat at Enugu. Nobody talked about it. The only thing we did was to appoint a peace and reconciliatory committee because we want peace for our people in Lagos and everywhere else.

"First of all, Igbo didn’t carry out any coup. People who were killed were not killed by Ndigbo; they were killed by soldiers. Igbos didn’t kill anybody. The coup was carried out by soldiers.

“It was purely a military affair; nothing to do with the Igbo. We have no reason to apologise to anybody.”

Iwuanyanwu said he had never accepted responsibility for the coup.

"Nobody told Nzeogu to do coup, just like nobody told the others that did coup in Nigeria,” he added.

Politics / ‘Establishment Of Criminality’ Did Not Allow INEC Server Work – Peter Obi by Kuginzi: 9:13pm On May 04
By Francis Ugwu

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, said it was the ‘establishment of criminality’ that made the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, servers not work during the last presidential election.

Obi, who insisted that the people must one day make it to work, explained that Amazon testified there were no glitches recorded globally on the day of the presidential election.

The former Anambra State governor made the statement on Friday in Canada while addressing the issues about the last general election, including IREV servers.

DAILY POST reports that the LP presidential candidate was in Canada for a “thank you” tour to appreciate Nigerians living in the country for their support offered him during the 2023 campaign/ general elections.

He said: “Where did we go wrong in the last election? We didn’t go wrong anywhere. We did the right things. But as I can always tell people: when you bring a change, you fight all those who live off the old order. They don’t go away; they gang up. And don’t think it’s a straight race to remove an establishment. It’s a long-distance journey anywhere in the world. Go and check anywhere, whether you are looking at what happened in India, with Mandela in South Africa, or America. No change has happened overnight, it takes time. I urge all of you, if you really want change, we have just begun. We just have to continue from where we are.

“Yes, there might be one or two things we will correct, those things we will correct. I assure you we are correcting them without naming them.

It’s not going to be easy.

“The INEC server was the same as the establishment. The server would not work because it was the establishment that made it so it wouldn’t work. It’s ours to continue to say that it would work. But there was no glitch. Amazon came and said there was no glitch. Amazon glitch is noticed globally – it’s recorded globally. And at that period, we brought down an Amazon person who said this is the number of glitches we have had since inception. And there was none that it reported that day. We know it didn’t occur. It was the glitch of the establishment criminality that was in the system.
And we must one day make it work.”

Crime / Dikko Radda: Bandits Recruiting Youths For As Low As ₦‎500 by Kuginzi: 8:42pm On May 04

The governor of Katsina State Dikko Radda says poverty is one of the major factors fueling banditry in the country, citing instances where young people are recruited into crime for as low as N500.

"The issue of the hypothesis behind political motive as responsible for banditry is not true,” the Katsina State governor said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Secondly, what also causes the recruitment of under the logistics services for bandits was a result of poverty because surprisingly with N5,000, N2,000, and N200, you can be able to convince some of these youths to join into this exercise which brings about money,” he insisted.

The governor lamented that banditry which is rife in the North-West region of Nigeria has become a business venture for some persons including government officials.

'Business Venture’
“Now it has turned out to be a business venture. A business venture for the criminals, some people who are in government; and some people who are in security outfits, and some people who are responsible for the day-to-day activities of their people,” the governor said. “These are so many reasons why we are unable to bring banditry to an end.”

In recent years, criminal gangs known locally as bandits have repeatedly raided places mostly in rural areas in the northern region, abducting many and killing others.

President Bola Tinubu has made reducing insecurity one of his priorities. Some have called for negotiations with the bandits as a way to end the menace.

But the Katsina State governor said his government won’t negotiate from a “point of weakness”.

"When you understand the terrain of the forest, and the different camps that we have within those forests… like in Katsina, we have more than 100 different camps that are being led by somebody. So, they have many leaders, many camps and if you’re negotiating with camps A and B and don’t negotiate with camps C and D, it will not bring any lasting peace,” Governor Radda said.

“Even if you negotiate with the leaders, the other followers of the leaders may not necessarily comply with the directives of their leader. So that is what makes the negotiation with the bandits a very difficult task,” he said.

"What I said is that I would never go into negotiations with any criminal at the point of weakness,” the governor added.

Crime / Organ Harvesting: Police Arrest 10 Suspects In Lagos by Kuginzi: 11:03pm On May 03
By Bola Frazer

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a gang of suspected ritualists who specialise in killing people and harvesting body parts for sale in various states.

The suspects include a woman who is an Osun priestess, a community chief, an Ifa priest, an Islamic cleric, and a trado-medicine practitioner.

While confirming this burst on Friday, the spokesperson of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the suspects who operate in one of the extreme divisions of Lagos were arrested through intelligence reports from the public.

According to him, the leader of the gang, a 33-year-old man, Ademola Akinlosotu, confessed initially that he was exhuming corpses from cemeteries and selling their parts to ritualists but later graduated to killing and selling human parts to customers on demand.

Speaking on his antecedents, Akinlosotu said that he moved from killing people to harvesting parts because his clients requested fresh parts rather than dead body parts.

Akinlosotu said ”while I and some members of the gang would do the killings,” he would supply the parts to a 52-year-old man, Ahmed Wahab, aka Alfa Bororo, who operated from Badagry in Lagos State and Ogun State, to supply his clients.

The suspect said a fresh human head is sold at N45,000 or N50,000 while a dried human head sells between N30,000 and N35,000; heart for N70,000 and hands for N50,000.

Akinlosotu speaking further admitted to killing two persons, which included a friend he met through social media, before he was arrested.
He said before they killed anyone, the herbalist would be contacted to consult an oracle to determine whether the killing would be successful or would bring trouble.

The suspect alleged that a traditional ruler in Badagry requested him to kill his son because he was giving him problems. He also said that the day they were to carry out the killing was when a friend he met online visited him, and he was killed.

Akinlosotu said that all he harvests, when he kills, is the person’s head, the heart, and the hands.

Hundeyin said exhibits of different human parts were recovered from the suspects as the police continued the trail of other suspects. The command said that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

Commercial banks in Nigeria closed 2.021 million bank accounts in the first quarter of 2024, Q1’24, to clean their books of questionable accounts and comply with regulatory orders on the linkage of bank accounts to the National Identity Number, NIN.

This is contained in a report by the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System, NIBSS, which also indicated that the number of inactive bank accounts grew month-on-month, MoM, by four million or 2.0 per cent to 19.7 million in March 2024 from 19.3 million in the previous month, February.

Politics / Lagos-calabar Highway: Peter Obi Is Hypocrite, Demolished Houses In Anambra, Ref by Kuginzi: 5:43pm On May 01
Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, recently condemned the demolition of structures along the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, describing the project as a "misplaced priority in the face of pressing national challenges."

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has attacked the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, for criticising Tinubu’s government over the demolition of structures on the path of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, recently condemned the demolition of structures along the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, describing the project as a "misplaced priority in the face of pressing national challenges."

Obi, who said that it was not too late to discontinue the project in order to focus on other pressing issues in the country, also identified several road construction projects abandoned across the country, saying that many of them might not be completed in 30 years.

He expressed deep concerns over what he described as the insensitivity displayed by President Tinubu-led Nigerian government.

Obi highlighted the devastating impact of the project’s initiation on businesses and residences located in the designated right-of-way and lamented the destruction of livelihoods, the waste of lifetime investments, and the loss of jobs as bulldozers tore down affected areas.

Reacting to Obi’s criticism, Onanuga in a post on X platform on Wednesday said that the former Anambra governor was "an incurable hypocrite for attacking the President" over the project while in his time as the governor, he demolished structures of Anambra residents for construction of roads without paying them compensation.

Onanuga said, “Peter Obi is an incurable hypocrite. As governor of Anambra, he demolished houses to build roads and refused to pay compensation.

“Today, Obi is attacking the Tinubu government for demolishing structures standing on the path of Lagos-Calabar superhighway.”

Education / 2 Undergraduates Of Ambrose Alli University Killed In Edo Cult Clash (Photos) by Kuginzi: 7:34am On May 01
By Mumini Abdulkareem, Ilorin

Two undergraduates of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State have been shot dead in a cult-related reprisal attack.

It was gathered yesterday that one of the victims was a member of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and a 400-level student in the Faculty of Agriculture.

The incident occurred on Poultry Road Extension in Ekpoma after the death of a person named Eddy, who was reportedly beaten to death for allegedly using fake bank alerts to make purchases.

However, the circumstances surrounding Eddy’s death were misinterpreted as an attack by rival cult members, leading to a retaliatory attack by a rival cult group and resulting in the deaths of the two students.

The Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the cult-related killings and stated that some suspects had been apprehended, with investigations ongoing.

In a related development, one person has been killed and several properties were destroyed on Tuesday in a deadly clash between cult groups in Kwara State.

The incident occurred at Eyenkorin, Asa Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, confirmed the incident, saying “Mobile men and tactical teams have been deployed and are presently on the ground.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters were called to the scene around 4:50 hours only to find two buildings engulfed in flames.

"Investigations revealed a sinister plot as the inferno was deliberately set by rival groups clashing in a deadly confrontation. One life was lost and the bereaved group avenged it by targeting the home of the rival group’s leader, leaving two houses in ruins,” Adekunle said.

Daily Trust reports that five persons had been killed in recent clashes between Eiye and Aiye rival cult groups in the state.

Channels TV reports that commuters in the state said most filling stations are locked under the guise that there is no fuel, while black marketers are selling a litre of petrol between N2,000 and N2,500 across the state capital.

Some of the residents called on the government to intervene to bring the situation under control so as not to degenerate, as they lamented that the situation has started affecting business activities and making life difficult for people.

They also said that the black market price of N2500 per litre is becoming scarce and that this is bringing business and other activities to a standstill in the state capital.

However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) blamed the fuel scarcity and queues that had resurfaced in Lagos, Abuja and other states on “logistics issues”, but said that the issues had been resolved.

The NNPCL in a statement said, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) wishes to clarify that the tightness in the supply of Premium Motor Spirit currently being experienced in some areas across the country is as a result of logistics issues and that they have been resolved.

“It also wishes to reiterate that the prices of petroleum products are not changing,” while calling on Nigerians to “avoid panic buying as there is a sufficiency of products in the country."

Business / Naira Rebounds, Sells For 1,280/$ At Parallel Market by Kuginzi: 6:43am On Apr 28
By Sunday Michael Ogwu

The Naira yesterday recovered against the US dollar at the parallel market as it appreciated to N1280/$, according to market information obtained by Nairametrics from currency traders.

This implied that the Naira appreciated by N120, representing a gain of 8.57 per cent when compared to the N1,400 to a dollar at which it traded on Friday.

Currency traders confirmed that they sold between N1, 280 and N1,300/dollar.

The local currency had, midweek lost a third of its value barely two weeks after strengthening to below N1,000 against the dollar.

It later dropped to N1,400 against the dollar at the black market on reports of fresh demand pressure.

This had made many people to question the impact of the sales of $15.83 million to 1,583 Bureau De Change (BDC) operators by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The apex bank had, on Monday announced the sale of $10,000 to its licensed currency traders nationwide at the rate of N1,021/$1 as part of its plans to aid foreign currency accessibility for qualified end users and stabilise the foreign exchange market.

Currency traders had attributed the recent depreciation of the Naira to market forces as supply had been unable to meet up with the demand.

Meanwhile, a data from FMDQ showed that the Naira continued its downward trend against the greenback at the official foreign exchange window, closing at N1,339.23/$1 on Friday.

This represents a 2.24 per cent depreciation when compared to the N1,309.88/$1 that was reported the previous day.

Recent initiatives by the apex bank had tempered forex scarcity, aiding the Naira’s recovery from an early March rate of N1,617 per dollar to N1,072 per dollar on April 17.

BDCs proffer solutions to depreciation

Meanwhile, the Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), has revealed plans for a unified retail end of the foreign currency market to tackle the recent Naira depreciation.

The president of the association, Aminu Gwadabe, disclosed this on Friday, noting that the move would tackle volatility and boost regulatory compliance within that market segment.

According to him, the association is implementing plans meant to unify operators from different cadres of the market, including the inauguration of state chapters for market coordination, integration and administering a united market structure.

He revealed plans to upgrade ABCON’s Business Process Platform, formerly called SAAZ Master.

"Part of our vision for a united retail-end forex market includes activating geo-mapping and automated BDCs physical office verification exercise using the Remote Gravity Physical verification apps.

“This will enable forex buyers to easily locate BDCs offices for effective and seamless transactions,” he stated.

Currency can’t appreciate in a vacuum – Senator Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko yesterday advised the federal government and the CBN against any measure capable of artificially forcing the Naira to gain value against other currencies.

Nwoko, who represents Delta North, gave the advice in a statement he signed and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He stated that continuous revisits to previously implemented policies and considerations of new ones were imperative.

He noted that the value of a sovereign nation’s currency is the cornerstone of respect and collaboration among nations.

The lawmaker emphasised that Nigeria must stimulate Naira demand.

According to him, as a country that exports crude oil and other commodities globally, it is imperative that all transaction on these items be conducted exclusively in Naira.

"This will incentivise buyers to seek out Naira, thereby driving its appreciation due to increased demand and scarcity.

“Moreover, the foreign reserve policy warrants reassessment.

“The practice of maintaining reserves in foreign jurisdictions, termed “foreign reserves,” is not only objectionable but also counterproductive to Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.

"Unlike other countries like the United States, Britain, France and Japan, which hold their reserves domestically, Nigeria’s adherence to this practice raises questions about its colonial legacy.

“If our early indigenous leaders acquiesced to this approach due to colonial influence, why should we perpetuate it? The primary rationale often cited to justify foreign reserves is trade balance maintenance,” Nwoko said.

According to him, this argument lacks merit when considering the limited number of traders involved in importing goods into Nigeria, which constitutes a negligible fraction of the country’s population.

Romance / I Still Want Godly Husband Despite My Past – 26-year-old Sex Worker by Kuginzi: 5:33am On Apr 28
By Godfrey George

A 26-year-old Ebonyi State lady, Chinaza Nwaezere, battling goitre (thyroid enlargement) decided to go into sex work to raise the money for her surgery after two failed businesses in Enugu State. She tells GODFREY GEORGE how life has been for her caring for her sick father and six younger siblings with the proceeds from the ‘business’ and why she wants to quit

Where are you from?

My name is Chinaza Nwaezere. I am 26 years old. I am from Abakiliki Local Government Area in Ebonyi State.

Did you go to school?

No, I did not finish secondary school. In fact, I stopped in JSS 1. I could not further my education because it was the period my mother died, and she was the breadwinner of the family.

What year was this?

This was in 2014.

Where is your dad?

My dad is alive, but my mother was the one taking care of the family.

How has life been since your mother’s passing?

Hmm… Life has been hard since she passed, especially as my dad is not really doing his work as a father. Everything is left for me and my siblings to hustle to make ends meet. We are just trying to survive.
When you said your father is not doing enough as a father, what did you mean?

My father is not capable of taking care of us.

Is he sick?

Yes, he is sick. He has been sick for many years, long before my mother’s demise. He has a heart condition, and because of that, he doesn’t do any hard work. He is just always at home because the doctors were very clear when they told him that he must avoid anything that would be classified as hard work. So, it has been me and my siblings struggling for the family.

We came together and gathered some money and opened a foodstuff business for him. That is what he does in Enugu. Although the business is very small and barely makes any profit, at least, my father can come out, interact with people, and make some sales so he will not just be lonely at home. He has been doing this business for a few years.

How many siblings do you have?

We are eight children. I am the second child. I have seven other siblings. Our last child should be around 11 years or so and he is still in school.

You mentioned you have an elder sister; where is she?

She is in Enugu. She is married with kids. She is a fashion designer. The burden of taking care of the family falls squarely on both our shoulders. My dad particularly relies on me so much and I have to do anything I have to do to provide, and all this was part of the reason I started sex work. My dad believed that, even if my siblings would not be able to give him any money for upkeep, I should be able to give him. We are really close.

How have you been able to live up to this responsibility?

Hmmm… It has not been easy. I was into food business. I sold food by the roadside in Enugu, but the business was not going as planned. It was not yielding much profit because the weight of the entire family was on it. It was from that business I took care of seven of my siblings and my father as well. The business collapsed before it even started. I also tried to do baking but it was not profitable to me. The money I was getting was not enough to take care of myself and my family.

It was around that period of my confusion that I was introduced to the ‘hustle’. I started hustling.

What do you mean by ‘hustling’?

I started hookup (sex work) in Enugu but had to relocate to Asaba, Delta State. I didn’t work for up to one week before I relocated to Asaba.

Why?

It was someone who told me to move to Asaba. She said the business there would be more profitable than Enugu. I also wasn’t feeling okay there, because that is where my family is based. I was staying with my dad and had to lie to him every night and I didn’t like it. I had to just decide to either stop it and return to poverty or move to Asaba and make some money.

I had to lie to my dad that I had a job in Asaba. He was so happy. He told me to kneel and he prayed for me before I left. He doesn’t really know what I am doing there.

What year exactly did you move to Asaba?

I moved in January 2024. I have only been in Asaba for four months.

How much have you made in four months?

The thing is that it is not every day I normally go out for this kind of stuff. There is also an issue of police clampdown. They are everywhere here, disturbing us. I had to stop for a while because of the police palaver. They are really disturbing girls here. I was squatting with a friend of mine here but she drove me out of the house, saying that she couldn’t accommodate me if I was not bringing money into the house for some basic things. I became homeless for a while before I got to the place where I am squatting now. I pay N11,000 here every week.

In a month, I may hustle for just two weeks. The money that I get, I will try to save. The money that they are paying me here is not even big.

How much do you charge for your services?

I can tell a man that a night with me is N30,000. They will beat it down to around N10,000. If it is okay by me, I will go with the man.

What is the highest that you have been paid in a night?

The highest? I don’t know. If it is someone that I have looked at from afar and weighed his pocket, I can demand N50,000 or N40,000, and they may beat it down to N30,000 which is my regular charge. But, it is not that simple.

At what point did you notice that you had goitre?

It started developing in my body in 2022. I just woke up and noticed I had a swelling. I thought it was just neck pain or sore throat. I went to a pharmacy and got medication for a case of sore throat. But, it kept growing bigger. I carried it for the entire year and even into 2023. It was in 2023 that the pain became unbearable as the swelling got really bigger. It has been weighing me down. This is the major thing that made me say I must take it out.

Foreign Affairs / US Agrees To Withdraw Troops From Niger, Clearing Path For Russia by Kuginzi: 9:44pm On Apr 20
US officials have stated that the United States has agreed to Niger's request to withdraw US troops from the West African country.

During a meeting, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine committed to initiating conversations in Niamey to plan an orderly and responsible withdrawal of US troops from Niger.

Last year, more than 1,000 US troops were stationed in Niger, operating from two bases. Among these bases was Air Base 201, a notable $100 million drone facility situated near Agadez in central Niger.

Since 2018, the base has targeted Islamic State militants and Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen, an al-Qaeda affiliate, in the Sahel region.

Last year, Niger's army staged a coup, seizing power. Until then, Niger had remained a key security partner of the United States and France.

Niger's recent leadership change has triggered a significant realignment of alliances. The new governments, mirroring actions taken by neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso, have terminated military partnerships with Western nations such as the US and France.

They have also disengaged from the regional economic bloc ECOWAS and pursued closer ties with Russia. These developments have prompted the US to accept Niger's request for troop withdrawal.

Last month, Niger's ruling junta announced the immediate revocation of a military agreement permitting the presence of military personnel and civilian staff from the US Department of Defense on its soil.

Following the ruling junta's announcement, the Pentagon stated it was seeking clarification on the next steps. It confirmed that the US government engaged in "direct and candid" discussions in Niger prior to the junta's decision and remained in communication with Niger's ruling military council.

Last week, hundreds of protestors rallied in Niger's capital, demanding the withdrawal of US troops. This came after the ruling junta's pivot in strategy, which included terminating the military agreement with the United States and welcoming Russian military instructors.

The region has witnessed eight coups in West and Central Africa over the past four years, raising concerns about democracy erosion in countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Politics / Moves To De-Register LP Will Be Resisted With Our Blood – Awamaridi by Kuginzi: 8:28pm On Apr 15
By Olayinka Ajayi

ACTING National Chairman of the Labour Party, Prince Ifagbemi Awamaridi, has raised an alarm of alleged plans to kill the LP, saying they would resist the plots.

Briefing newsmen in Lagos, Awamaridi, in a press statement titled: “Nigeria; the hard way, the only way” apologized on behalf of the party for the “disappointing conduct of the past executives,” which he described in Yoruba as “Gbajue” (fraud).

He said: “I and other members of the party apologize on behalf of the Labour Party for the disappointing conduct of the Gbajue executive.

“They commercially rented the party as a Special Purpose Vehicle mapped out as a mischief to kill the party in such a way that the party will be de-registered.

"The de-registration move they are making is done secretly, and we are aware. We will resist it with our last blood.

“We are now in charge of the Labour Party, and any group or individuals that call themselves the Labour Party are mere political clubs as all former excos’ tenures have expired.”

Politics / It’s Too Early To Threaten Nigerians With 2027 Election, Hayab Tells NEF by Kuginzi: 9:36am On Apr 13
Former Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. John Joseph Hayab, has told the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) that it is too early to threaten Nigerians with 2027 election.

In a statement yesterday, Hayab stated categorically that, “It is sad to read that some members of NEF are saying North will not vote for Tinubu in the next election in 2027.”

As a stakeholder, he said: “I find this call coming at the wrong time and lacking in good reasoning. The speed at which our naira is improving against dollars shows Tinubu is doing better than our almighty Buhari.”

He further explained that the speed at which Nigerians got the Kuriga school children from Kaduna State back is a huge progress in handling insecurity compared to how innocent parents suffered when Bethel Baptist School children and others were kidnapped.

He, however, advised that, “NEF should instead seek ways to collaborate with this government to find solutions to insecurity, hunger, improved economy and making our currency add value for the overall progress and development of the country.

“Threatening the government with no vote in 2027 shows they may not have a good heart for the progress of the country but are only interested in what they will benefit.”

He challenged bodies like NEF to use their groups to support and challenge their leaders or government authorities to make the country great and a better place for all Nigerians.

“Let us not bring issues that have no basis at this time for the progress of our land. We need elders that will help unite the country, offer useful advice that will help the nation not coming up with provocative statements that will only provoke other regions to start making statements that will further bring division and confusion in the country,” he further advised.

Crime / I Collected Dollars In Cash For Emefiele, Dispatch Rider Tells Court by Kuginzi: 5:57am On Apr 13

Explains how he picked up $1m, $850,000, $750,000, $400,000 for ex-CBN gov

…says Emefiele never rewarded him, case adjourned to April 29

A dispatch rider, Monday Osazuwa, on Friday, narrated to the Special Offences Court in Lagos how the embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, instructed him on different occasions to collect the sum of $3m cash in tranches.

Osazuwa, who was led in evidence in chief by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), told the court that he had been a dispatch rider at Zenith Bank since 2001, before joining the CBN as a contract staff member in 2014.

The witness said Emefiele was the Managing Director of Zenith Bank while he worked there as a dispatch rider.

According to Osazuwa, he knew Emefiele, who was his boss while in Zenith Bank, before he later joined him in the CBN.

The witness, who testified before Justice Raman Oshodi, said he was later appointed as a senior supervisor (full-time) in charge of recording and filing documents while working in the CBN Governor’s office in Lagos.

Osazuwa said, “I was still working in the governor’s office when I was appointed a full-time staff member, and we usually communicated through WhatsApp and email.

"I performed as a senior supervisor, recording and filing with other official roles.

“I could recall that, in 2020, when he was outside Lagos, Emefiele called me and gave me a number that a man had something I would collect from him, and that the man would give me the number of another person.

When I got to the man’s office, I was given an envelope. I counted the money (in it), and was told to give it to my boss.”

The witness further told the court that Emefiele usually collected money alone whenever he was in Lagos.

According to him, any time the defendant was not around, Emefiele would tell him (Osazuwa) to give the money to the second defendant, Henry Omoile.

Osazuwa added that Emefiele sent him to MINL Limited when he was with Zenith Bank.

He added, “This company is situated at Isolo. The first defendant(Emefiele) do send me to collect cheques from the company from Mr. Monday, and when I collect the cheque from Mr. Monday, I would give it back to Emefiele, and he would lodge the money into the account of Dummies Oil and Gas.”

Osazuwa further stated that Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile, lived in the residence of the former CBN governor.

He stated that when he collected money for his boss (Emefiele), he would take it to his residence at Iru Close, Ikoyi, Lagos.

"Whenever I received the money and took it to my boss’ residence, Mr Emefiele would tell me to give it to the second defendant (Omoile) whenever he was not home.

“I did not keep a record of the transactions, because he instructed me that I should collect the money and bring it to his house.

"I did not keep a record of the transactions, because he instructed me that I should collect the money and bring it to his house.

“The highest amount I collected was $1m, all in cash. Some weeks later, the businessman also called me, and I collected $850,000, $750,000, and $400,000 in cash in different tranches.

"I have never been rewarded, paid, or given anything. I was doing it out of faithfulness, and he knows it, but he never for once said, ‘Take this’,” the witness said.

While being cross-examined by the defence counsel, Mr. Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, the witness confirmed to the court that he had been working with the defendant since 2002.

Earlier, Justice Oshodi had granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N50m.

He is being tried for alleged abuse of office and fraud to the tune of $4.5bn and N2.8bn.

The judge admitted Emefiele to N50m bail with two sureties in like sum.

He held that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have three years of tax payment with the Lagos State Government.

Oshodi also said that the sureties must show proper identification and be registered in the Lagos State Bail Management System.

The judge also said that he was satisfied with the bail conditions of N1m earlier granted to Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoil, who is standing trial in another charge before Justice Olufunke Sule-Hamzat of the Yaba High Court.

Oshodi, however, said that the bail documents must be transferred to the Special Offences Court and registered in the Lagos State Bail Management System.

The EFCC arraigned Emefiele on Monday, April 8, on 23 counts bordering on abuse of office, accepting gratifications, corrupt demand, receiving property fraudulently obtained, and conferring corrupt advantage, while his co-defendant was arraigned on three counts bordering on acceptance of a gift by agents.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Justice Oshodi also refused an oral application for adjournment, which was moved twice by defence counsel, Labi-Lawal, to cross-examine the witness.

The judge adjourned the case till April 29, 2024, for trial and the hearing of an application for a closed section.

Crime / Borno CJTF Brutalises Youth With Gun Barrel, Machete, For Wearing Afro Hairstyle by Kuginzi: 6:54am On Apr 12
Borno CJTF Brutalises Nigerian Youth With Gun Barrel, Machete, Sticks For Wearing Afro Hairstyle, Forcibly Cuts His Hair And Detains Victim For Refusing To Pay For 'Service'

Ayouth identified as Titus Durkwa David has narrated how he was assaulted, brutalised, humiliated, and detained by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Maiduguri, Borno State for wearing an Afro.

Afro is a hairstyle popular with black people in the 1970s in which the hair is cut into a large round shape.

David said he was tagged a criminal for wearing the hairstyle and brutalised by 10 members of the task force, who hit him with a machete, gun barrel, and sticks. He said he was subsequently subdued and his Afro was shaved off.

Narrating his ordeal in a Facebook post on Thursday, David said, "Earlier this afternoon, around 1:00 p.m., while on my way back home from my friend's place at Federal Low-cost Maiduguri, Borno State, wearing my native attire and sporting a clean afro haircut, looking decent and presentable, I alighted from the Keke Napep at the popular Mala-Kachalla Roundabout.

"Upon disembarking, an individual from the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) approached me. He told me that I looked like a criminal and one of those nuisances carrying out illegal activities in the city because of my haircut (afro), and instructed me to meet their commander, who was standing nearby in a sky blue native attire.

"At that moment, I tried my best to remain calm and respectfully challenged him to justify how I resembled the people he accused me of being. He couldn't provide a satisfactory response, and as we conversed, two more of his colleagues joined us, and we proceeded to see their commander.

"Upon meeting the commander, I greeted him and recounted what had transpired. He then inquired about my identity, whether I was a military personnel or not. I introduced myself modestly, avoiding any hint of disrespect. He explained that he was ordered to shave the hair of anyone with a hairstyle other than a low-cut.

"I remained composed while engaging with the illiterate commander when suddenly, I was slapped across the face and pushed to the ground by approximately ten CJTF members. Despite my resistance, I was subjected to blows from a machete, gun barrel, and sticks to my back. I was forcibly subdued and my hair shaved as seen in the below pictures."

David, who shared pictures of his new look after the humiliation suffered at the hands of the security task force, said despite the assault, he was asked to pay for the service of a barber engaged to cut his hair. And when he refused, he was detained.

"I was told to pay for the services of the haircut to a local barber (Mai Wanzam), I refused and we fought again, leading them to hold me in their custody for about an hour," he said.

David alleged that some members of the task force had been engaging in illegal activities but the state governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum had been ignoring such.

"These CJTF members, who have been oppressing innocent citizens like myself, are doing more harm than good. The fact that they carry guns doesn't mean one can't fight back to the last straw of the energy God has given us.

For the record, these CJTF have been involved in numerous illegal and criminal activities within and around the state, and the Governor is aware but turns a blind eye.

"Dear Governor Engr Babagana Umara Zulum, with all due respect, I urge you to call upon these illiterate individuals who are ignorant of their responsibilities before the situation escalates further.

"As for today's ordeal, I will live to fight another day, and there, we shall settle the score. I will never forget these.

"This is just the beginning of the end," he said.

Politics / Enugu Community Resorts To Invoking Deities Against Pro-Biafra Attack by Kuginzi: 5:01pm On Apr 11
A community in Enugu State, South-east Nigeria, has resorted to invoking deities to stop frequent attacks and killings by pro-Biafra gunmen in the area, PREMIUM TIMES reports.

The community, Enugu-Ezike, which is in the Igboeze-North Local Government Area of the Nigerian South-eastern state
, had been witnessing frequent attacks and killings by the pro-Biafra gunmen.

Multiple sources told PREMIUM TIMES that the community invoked the deities following the alleged inability of the security agencies to stop the attacks in the area.

How it happened

An indigene and elder in the community, Nicholas Idoko, told this newspaper earlier in March that leaders of the community were disturbed by the frequent attacks and killings in the area, which prompted them to make an arrangement to track down the hoodlums behind the attacks.

Mr Idoko said the first set of the people arrested by the community were confirmed to be indigenes of the community.

He said following the discovery, the community decided to invoke several deities against the attackers.

“We carried the deities in all parts of the community beginning from Orute Roundabout and petitioned the deities to kill anybody – man or woman who attacks or kills or causes insecurity in our land,” he said. “That was in November 2023. Since then, our place has been calm.”

Another indigene of the community who identified himself simply as Afamefuna confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday.

Mr Afamefuna said the community decided to invoke the deities because the hoodlums behind the attacks believe strongly in the deities.

He said before the deities were invoked, the community leaders had tactically recruited the suspected attackers into the community’s Neighbourhood Watch Group. Still, their insistence on the Biafra agenda caused disputes between them and original members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, resulting in several killings.

“In the heat of the killings and attacks, soldiers were deployed to solve the problem. But the soldiers’ intervention did not really work,” he said in Igbo.

“So, the community invoked the deities in November 2023. That day, the whole community was filled with people. Even security agencies were guiding those carrying the deities.

As of now (after the invoking of the deities), to be honest, the insecurity has slowed down (in the community),” Mr Afamefuna added.

The indigene said more than seven deities were invoked by the community leaders on that day.

Sit-at-home also disappearing’

Like other communities in the South-east, sit-at-home had been enforced in the Enugu Ezike community on Mondays.

But Mr Afamefuna said after the invoking of the deities, the sit-at-home waned in the community and that attacks often witnessed during the illegal action in the area had also stopped.

“Mondays are like business hours for those criminals. But now, there is nothing like an attack, even on Mondays (in the community). The only thing is that fear of what happened before still prevents some people from coming out on Mondays,” he said.

‘Kill anybody who murders, kidnaps again in Enugu-Ezike.’

PREMIUM TIMES obtained a video clip which showed the community leaders invoking the deities.

In the clip, a traditionalist in the community identified as Stone Igwe was seen carrying a fetish pot while speaking to the deities and appealing to them to kill those who further murder, kidnap and carry out any attack or evil against any member of the community.

We are handing Enugu Ezike into your hands today. We are invoking you today in this land. We are asking you all from today henceforth whoever murders any innocent indigene of Enugu Ezike whether through charm, gun, or machete, kill such person or persons,” he shouted in Enugu Ezike dialect of Igbo language.

“Isee,” villagers chorused, meaning Amen.

“Whether you are from Hausa land, Fulani, Yorubaland, or even from India, and you murder any Enugu Ezike indigene, may these deities kill you,” the community leader implored the deities again.

Apart from killing, the community leaders also invoked the deities against kidnappers and armed robbers operating in the Enugu Ezike.

Biafra agitators or criminals?
Some residents of the community said the hoodlums initially terrorising the community were not members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or any other pro-Biafra group but criminals hiding under the cloak of Biafra agitation in the region.

"They (the gunmen) are not Biafra agitators. Some of them were initially IPOB members, but later they had internal disagreements,” one of the residents, who asked not to be named, said.

“I heard that IPOB coordinators would tell them what to do, and they would reject it probably because they have guns. From there, they were sacked from IPOB,” the resident added.

It’s not new’
The invoking deities to fight insecurity is not new in the South-east, according to Nnamdi Anekwe, a security expert.

Mr Anekwe told PREMIUM TIMES that invoking of deities was used to resolve disputes, secure the people and achieve peace in the region during Nigeria’s pre-colonial era.

The security expert, who hails from the South-east, said communities in the region relied on deities to ensure orderliness because there was no police and judicial system at the time, explaining that the practice gradually went extinct due to the coming of Christianity.

“I buy into the idea that deploying traditional methods and practices can help them to solve insecurity (because the) people tend to believe in it rather than using the police force or the court,” he said.

“So, the approach by the community using traditional methods to solve or prevent crime dates back to more than 200 to 300 years. It’s not a new thing. It’s going to be effective,” Mr Anekwe stated.

Background
Like in other communities in the South-east, security had deteriorated in Enugu Ezike with frequent attacks by armed persons.

The attacks often target security agencies, residents and government facilities.

The Nigerian government has accused IPOB of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region. However, the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attacks.

IPOB is a group leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra, which it wants carved out from the South-east and some parts of South-south Nigeria.

The group had repeatedly disowned the Monday sit-at-home and attacks in the region, saying those behind the attacks and the illegal order were criminals attempting to blackmail the separatist group.

Politics / Cleric To Nigerians: Stop Cursing President, Others by Kuginzi: 9:19am On Apr 11
By Abbas Jimoh

Nigerians have been urged to stop cursing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders over the hardship and other socio-economic challenges facing the country.

The Chief Imam and Grand-Mufti of Al-Huda Mosque Byazhin, Kubwa, Abuja, Dr Rafee Busayree Al-Ijebuwi, made the call on Wednesday in his Eid-el-Fitri khutbah (sermon) titled, ‘No fleeing from Allah but refuge with Him’, after the two units of prayers offered at the end of the 2024 Ramadan fasting.

He noted that this year’s Ramadan came at a hard time when the minds of the citizens sloped into impatience with their government because of the reforms embarked upon by President Tinubu. “I do not think that any of the good Muslims does not know for certain that there is no fleeing from Allah but to take refuge with Him and pray that the Omnipotent Allah should provide President Tinubu with members of cabinet who shall never fear criticism.

“My appeal to those who meet our politicians with taunting and cursing is: take it easy, because, when a man who drank wine was taken to the Prophet Muhammad and some people lambasted him saying: May Allah disgrace you! But the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) snubbed them and said: (No! Do not assist Satan upon him) that anger may induce an obstinate persistence on the crimes,” Dr Al-Ijebuwi said.

He urged Muslims to remember the recommended six days fasting from the current month of lunar month of Shawwal as Prophet Muhammadu said that ‘Whosoever fasts in Ramadan and follows it with extra six days from Shawwal; then shall have a lifespan fasting reward’, which means that the six added to Ramadan make a total of 360 days reward because each good act is paid back 10-fold.

The cleric also urged Muslims to allow males and females of marriageable ages engaged in legitimate marriages.

Politics / I’m Learning On The Job, I Won’t Drag Power With Obaseki — Omobayo Godwins by Kuginzi: 4:43am On Apr 09
The new Deputy Governor of Edo State, Omobayo Godwins, has pledged his unalloyed loyalty to Governor Godwin Obaseki in the few months they will work together before the end of the governor’s eight-year double terms on November 12, 2016.

The 37-year-old, who was sworn in on Monday after the state assembly impeached Philip Shaibu as Edo deputy governor, was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

Godwins said he is learning on the job and won’t hesitate to do all that his principal instructs him to do.

When asked if he is satisfied that the role of a deputy governor has been relegated to a “spare tire”, Godwins said, “It’s okay with me. Life is a process. At 37+, I am already a deputy governor, it has improved my political outlook and I am not in a rush to drag with my governor. Whatever he say I should is what I will do. He knows my strength. So, I will dwell on my strength when it comes to adding value. Politically, I am learning on the job.”

The new deputy governor was unambiguous that his becoming deputy governor, months to the expiration of the eight-year tenure of Obaseki, was part of the political permutations for Ighodalo to defeat his closest contenders like LP’s Olumide Akpata and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Godwins boasted that he has robust grassroot support from his base in Akoko Edo, one of the local governments in the Edo North Senatorial District, to boost the chances of Ighodalo, who hails from Ewohimi in the Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo Central Senatorial District.

On Shaibu’s impeachment, he said, “That is politics for you. Your job first of all is to be loyal.”

Meanwhile, Shaibu has rejected his impeachment by the lawmakers, describing it as a threat to democracy.

“This is not just an attack on me as an individual but on the democracy that we hold dear,” he said

"It is a dangerous descent into dictatorship and a threat to the foundation of our democracy. Let it be clear that this impeachment was hatched because of my ambition to contest the Edo State 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. An ambition that is a legal right to all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Shaibu was Obaseki’s deputy from November 12, 2016 till April 8, 2024 when he was unceremoniously removed following a protracted rift between the two former political allies.

For about one year, Obaseki and Shaibu had been engaged in counter-accusations as their once-smooth relationship completely broke down. The governor had claimed that Shaibu was planning a “coup” to unseat him while the labour leader also accused his principal of instigating the state assembly to impeach him.

Shaibu, who contested the PDP governorship primary, had declared himself a winner in a parallel election after the party announced businessman Ighodalo the party’s flag bearer.

Politics / Petrol: Oil Marketers Propose N550/litre Price To Dangote by Kuginzi: 4:45am On Apr 08
By
AS the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC Limited, moves to end petrol scarcity in Lagos and its environs, Dangote Refinery and oil marketers have intensified efforts at taking final decisions on pricing and delivery of petrol to filling stations nationwide.

Dangote Refinery, which can refine 650,000 barrels per day, bpd of crude oil, intends to commence production and distribution of the product, the bulk of which is currently imported from the global market, in May 2024.

Checks by Vanguard, weekend, indicated that the parties have been meeting and exchanging notes on the pricing, distribution and margins to stakeholders in the value chain, including transporters and insurers.

Recall that depot owners buy the product from NNPC Limited at N556 per litre and sell to independents at N640 per litre.
It was, however learnt that independent markers have proposed N550 per litre to management of Dangote Refinery who is currenty in a discussion with them.

We have proposed N550 per litre — Marketers

The President of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Alhaji Abubakar Migandi Garima, who confirmed the development yesterday, said: “We have been discussing with Dangote Refinery. The discussion, centering on pricing, margins and other issues, is still ongoing.

“We have proposed that the lifting price should be N550 per litre in Lagos. The price of the product will differ from one part of Nigeria to another because of distance and cost of delivering petrol to different locations.

"We are currently waiting on Dangote Refinery to conclude and communicate the price per litre, so we can plan to lift the product when it comes on stream.

‘’We expect that the price of the locally refined petrol would be cheaper than imported petrol, due mainly to local availability of the bulk of its crude oil and removal of transportation cost.”

Let’s enjoy benefit of domestic refining — Experts, consumers

Similarly, Executive Director, Emmanuel Egbogah Foundation for Petroleum and Energy Industry Economics and Policy Advocacy, Professor Wumi Iledare, said the coming on stream of Dangote Refinery presented an opportunity for Nigerians to enjoy cheaper prices of petrol now or later.

He said: “The price of petroleum is majorly correlated with the acquisition cost of crude oil. The cost of running the refinery and opportunity cost of capital contribute marginally. Distribution and retailing costs are important but the crude cost matter the most.

"Thus, low price of petrol in Nigeria when Dangote Refinery operates at full capacity, is a possibility indeed, ceteris paribus.”

A motorist, who pleaded anonymity, said: “Most people have stopped driving every day. That is why we do not experience much traffic in the cities, including Lagos anymore. I am pleased that the Dangote Refinery will soon supply petrol. We hope and pray that it will be cheaper than the imported product.”

FG should float $1bn fund to complete new refineries — Refinery owners

However, President of Crude Oil Refinery-owners Association of Nigeria, CORAN, Mr. Momoh Oyarekhua, said: “ The coming on stream of Dangote Refinery is a very good development, especially as it would reduce huge dependence on imported petrol, conserve foreign exchange and create additional jobs.

"The government needs to support the construction of other indigenous refinery projects, currently at different stages nationwide. We have proposed the creation of $1 billion fund to support local investors.

‘’If this is done, lack of funds, which has always been a major challenge, would to some extent be addressed.

“The federal government and other stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream, Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, should engage with indigenous investors to explore the best ways and means of bringing this into reality in the best interest of oil and gas industry and the nation’s economy.”

We expect sector wide impact – CPPE

Also, the Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, Dr. Muda Yusuf, said: “If we are able to take advantage of Dangote refinery to reduce our consuming products, it will go a long way in easing the country’s foreign exchange crisis. However, it would also make positive impact across all sectors.”

It’s premature for our reaction—NLC

Asked to react to the development yesterday, an official of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, who chose to remain anonymous, said it was premature for comments, saying “how can we react to speculations? When we see what they have done, then, we can say something. For now, we think it is premature.”

NNPC Ltd moves to end shortage

On the current scarcity of fuel in some parts of Lagos and its environs, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Limited, Olufemi Soneye, stated: “The NNPC Limited wishes to inform the general public that the tightness in Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, supply witnessed in some filling stations in Lagos was a result of an issue in one of the depots in the area.

"The NNPC Retail Limited, our retail arm, has since resolved the issue and effective tomorrow (today), normalcy will be restored within the affected area.

“NNPC Limited calls on motorists in Lagos to avoid panic buying of PMS as all hands are on deck to sustain sufficiency in the supply of petroleum products in the area.”
