Foreign Affairs / UN Debates PA Resolution Demanding Israel Leave ‘Occupied Palestinian Territory’ by Kuginzi: 8:28pm On Sep 18
By AGENCIES and TOI STAFF

UN member states debated Tuesday a push by the Palestinian Authority to formally demand an end to Israeli rule of “Occupied Palestinian Territory” within 12 months.

The text, which has faced fierce criticism from Israel, is based on an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice calling Israel’s military rule of areas captured during the 1967 Six Day War “unlawful.”

“Israel is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory as rapidly as possible,” read the opinion, requested by the General Assembly.

In response, Arab countries called for a special session of the assembly just days before dozens of heads of state and government descend on the UN headquarters this month to address the kick-off of this year’s General Assembly session.

“The idea is you want to use the pressure of the international community in the General Assembly and the pressure of the historic ruling by the ICJ to force Israel to change its behavior,” said Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour on Monday, acknowledging the draft resolution had “shocked many countries.”

The draft resolution, due to be voted on late Tuesday or Wednesday, “demands that Israel brings to an end without delay its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” and that this be done “no later than 12 months from the adoption.”

The first draft text gave only six months.

Israel firmly rejected the resolution on Tuesday.

“We gather here to watch the Palestinians’ UN circus — a circus where evil is righteous, war is peace, murder is justified,” said Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon.

“How dare you continue this tradition of passing one-sided resolutions against Israel.”

US envoy also decries ‘inflammatory’ motion
The draft resolution — which would be non-binding — also “demands” the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the West Bank and Gaza, a halt to new settlements, the return of seized land and property, and the possibility of return for displaced Palestinians.

A paragraph calling on member states to halt arms exports to Israel disappeared from the draft text during negotiations, however.

“The Palestinians want to live — not survive. They want to be safe in their homes,” said Mansour on Tuesday, kicking off the debate on the first resolution ever introduced by the Palestinians.

“How many more Palestinians need to be killed before change finally takes place to stop this inhumanity?”

The ICJ opinion was “a historic opinion as this was the first time the court examined the Israeli occupation as a whole,” Mansour said.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned the draft resolution as “inflammatory” and said it “is not going to advance the cause of peace.”

“It also fails to acknowledge, among other things, that Hamas, a terrorist organization, is currently exerting power, control and influence in Gaza,” Thomas-Greenfield added.

In its July decision, the ICJ said it determined Israel’s policy of settlement in the West Bank violated international law, and that Israel had effectively annexed large parts of the West Bank — along with East Jerusalem, which it formally annexed and designated as sovereign Israeli territory in 1980 — due to some of the apparently permanent aspects of Israeli rule there.

The legal consequences of its findings, the court ruled, were that Israel must end its control of these areas, cease new settlement activity, “repeal all legislation and measures creating or maintaining the unlawful situation” — including those that it said “discriminate against the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” — and provide reparations for any damage caused by its “wrongful acts.”

In addition, the court said that all UN member states are obligated not to recognize changes to the status of the territories and that all states are obligated not to aid or assist Israel’s rule of the territories, and ensure that any impediment “to the exercise of the Palestinian people of its right to self-determination is brought to an end.”

While the Security Council is largely paralyzed on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, from which Israel unilaterally withdrew from in 2005, the General Assembly has adopted several texts in support of Palestinian civilians amid the current war.

In May the assembly overwhelmingly supported a largely symbolic resolution on full Palestinian membership of the UN, garnering 143 votes in favor, nine against with 25 abstentions.

Religion / Fufeyin: Jesus Didn’t Sell Miracle Water, Slam-dunk Christians, Victoria Orenze by Kuginzi: 8:27pm On Sep 17
By Enitan Daramola

As Prophet Fufeyin faces an investigation by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control over allegations of selling miracle products, prominent gospel singer Victoria Orenze has issued a stern warning to Christians, urging them to beware of infiltrators who misuse religious authority.

The ‘Truth In Sounds’ singer’s comment comes against the backdrop of controversies surrounding the sale of the products branded “miracle water” and “River Jordan water”, amongst others, by a faith-based organisation, Christ Mercy Land Delivery Ministries, led by Prophet Fufeyin.

In a statement addressing the public on her verified Instagram page, Orenze criticized the practices of some religious leaders who deviate from the teachings of Jesus Christ. “Dear General Public,” she began, “for those that are quick to call anyone USING (abusing) the name of JESUS CHRIST, pastors, prophets, etc., JESUS did not slam anyone on chairs like a wrestler. JESUS did not sell spiritual fish, key, water, light, money, ATM, apple, mango, and more.”

Fufeyin who is not new to controversies, having been accused of allegedly attempting to bribe OAP Daddy Freeze back in 2020, is known to perform questionable miracles.

Orenze continued, “There are more like them that are less or almost not obvious like they are, some sleek, smooth, and very appealing in their ways. Those using juju to perform miracles, using divination to prophesy, and more. Looking nothing like JESUS CHRIST in the Bible but the one they have created for themselves.”

She urged the public to recognize and reject such figures, calling them “INFILTRATORS” rather than genuine servants of God. Orenze also appealed for compassion and prayer for those who follow these misleading leaders, suggesting they might be under a spiritual spell.

Her statement highlights growing concerns about the commercialization of religion and its impact on true spiritual practice. As the investigation continues, Orenze’s message serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and faithful to the authentic teachings of Christianity.

Sports / Afcon 2025 Qualifier: Forget You’re Nigeria- Rohr Advises Two Benin Republic Pl by Kuginzi: 6:07pm On Sep 07
By Don Silas

Head coach of Benin Republic, Gernot Rohr, has advised two players of Nigerian descent to put aside their ties to Nigeria on Saturday when they face the Super Eagles in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifiers in Uyo.

Rohr has selected Lorient’s Lagos-born striker Tosin Aiyegun and Grenoble Foot 38’s Junior Olaitan in his squad list to tackle Nigeria.

Olaitan was born in Porto-Novo to a Beninese mother and a Nigerian father.

The 31-year-old forward was eligible to represent the Super Eagles but opted to commit his international future to the Cheetahs despite growing up in Lagos, Nigeria.

Aiyegun, on his part, was scouted by Rohr with a view to a call-up to the Super Eagles but the invitation never came before he was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, in 2021.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Rohr said: “We have some players who are born in Nigeria. It’s a neighboring country so they also speak Yoruba. They have to forget they are also a little bit Nigerian.

“They are now playing for Benin and they will give the best for their country and I think they will be able to have perhaps a special motivation to show that they also could have a chance to play for Nigeria.

“I hope there will not be any problem for them.”

Politics / Dangote Refinery: No Guarantee Of Lower Prices, Says NNPC by Kuginzi: 3:01pm On Sep 07
By Moses Adenitis

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has denied claims that it is responsible for the recent hike in Premium Motor Spirit, commonly called petrol, in the country.

The company said the pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery Ltd, is determined by global market forces, stating that there is no guarantee of lower prices associated with domestic refining of the products in the country.

The NNPC stated this on Saturday in reaction to rumours it is attempting to monopolise the offtake of all products from the Dangote refinery.

In the statement titled “NNPC Ltd Not the Sole Offtaker; Market Open to Lower Prices from Any Domestic Refinery”, the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, said, “The attention of the NNPC Ltd has been drawn to a press release by the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, which claims that the Dangote Refinery Limited (DRL) is being undermined by actions of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd).

Specifically, MURIC asserts that recent changes to the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) will prevent the Dangote Refinery from offering lower prices and that NNPC Ltd. has become the sole off-taker of all products from the refinery.”

The company said to set the records straight, “The pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery Ltd. (DRL), is determined by global market forces.”

NNPC said, “The recent changes in PMS prices have no impact on the DRL or any other domestic refinery’s access to the Nigerian market,” adding that “In fact, if current prices are perceived as high, it presents an ideal opportunity for the refinery to sell its products at lower prices in the Nigerian market.”

The NNPC further emphasised “that there is no guarantee of lower prices associated with domestic refining compared to any global parity pricing framework, as confirmed by the DRL.”

“The NNPC Ltd. will only fully offtake PMS from the DRL if the market prices of PMS are higher than the pump prices in Nigeria. The DRL and any other domestic refinery are free to sell directly to any marketer on a willing buyer, willing seller basis, which is the current practice for all fully deregulated products.

“NNPC Ltd. has no desire or intention to become the distributor for any entity in a free market environment, and therefore, the notion of becoming a sole off-taker does not arise,” it said.

The NNPC said it cannot undermine a business in which it holds a billion-dollar stake.

“As an advocacy group for fair and just treatment, MURIC should have verified the facts before making statements that are entirely flawed and has the potential to incite ordinary Nigerians against the NNPC Ltd,” the company said.

Foreign Affairs / U.S. President’s Son, Hunter Biden Faces Up To 17 Year In Prison Over Tax Evasio by Kuginzi: 9:09pm On Sep 06
The charges include tax evasion, filing fraudulent tax returns, and failing to pay taxes. Scarsi indicated that Biden could also be fined up to $1.3 million.

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, is facing up to 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to nine federal tax charges in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday.

This unexpected move came on what was supposed to be the first day of a lengthy trial.

District Judge Mark Scarsi, a Trump appointee, accepted the plea and set sentencing for December 16, CNN reports.

The charges include tax evasion, filing fraudulent tax returns, and failing to pay taxes. Scarsi indicated that Biden could also be fined up to $1.3 million.

During the hearing, prosecutor Leo Wise, who led the case, expressed surprise at Biden's change of plea, saying, “We were as shocked as everyone else in the courtroom this morning.”

Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, defended his client's actions, stating, Hunter decided to enter his plea to protect those he loves from unnecessary hurt and cruel humiliation.”

Lowell added that the plea was made to avoid another public trial, which would focus on Biden’s struggles with addiction. He said, “This plea prevents that kind of show trial that would have not provided all the facts or served any real point in justice.”

Prosecutors, however, maintained that Biden was guilty and had initiated the events leading to the charges.

“He’s the one that triggered this set of events,” said Wise.

He also opposed Biden’s initial attempt to enter an Alford plea, which allows a defendant to plead guilty while maintaining innocence.

Biden's case has drawn attention due to the possibility of a presidential pardon. However, the White House reiterated Thursday that President Biden had ruled out this option.

Hunter Biden previously faced trial in June for gun-related charges. He was convicted and is awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for November 13.

Politics / I’m Ready To Take Hard Decisions To Move Nigeria Forward — Tinubu by Kuginzi: 8:26pm On Sep 06
By Johnbosco Agbakwuru, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu, on Friday in Beijing, said he was ready to take the hard decisions to move the nation forward, adding that it is not always easy for a leader to have a national consensus on issues.

The President stated that when he met with Nigerians living in the People’s Republic of China to round off his official engagements in the country.

TInubu described his visit as “very good and successful”.

Addressing members of Nigerians in Diaspora Organization in China, NIDO China, and the Nigerian community at the China World Hotel, President Tinubu emphasized his efforts to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure, trade, finance, energy, green economy, and mining during his discussions with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and his participation at the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The President, in a statement by his spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, said: “What is uppermost in my mind is for you to continue representing Nigeria as good citizens. And I urge you all to be good ambassadors of our nation in China.

"We will always celebrate our diversity. We cherish it, but this diversity is our commitment to serve. If it is about service, we must be good citizens.”

He emphasized the importance of discipline and commitment to national service, citing China’s disciplined society as an example for Nigerians to follow.

"I cannot tell you more, except from the embassy, that China is a very disciplined society and we have to be disciplined too. Without discipline and commitment, we cannot build a nation that is respected everywhere in the world.

"We must exploit our diversity and be ready to do everything required of us within the laws of the communities that we live in and reflect a good image of our country,” the President said.

Reforms
Highlighting the impact of investments in China’s economy, President Tinubu assured Nigerians in Diaspora that Nigeria’s Bank of Industry is prepared to collaborate with them to leverage opportunities back home.

“Nigeria is going through reforms, and we are taking very bold and unprecedented decisions.

“For example, you might have been hearing from home in the last few days about fuel prices.

"But, can we help it? Can we develop good roads like you have here? You see electricity being constant in quantity and quality. You see water supply, constant and running, and you see their good schools.

"And we say we want to hand over a banner without stain to our children?

“What is the critical part to get us there if we cannot make hard decisions to pave the way for a country that is blessed and so talented?

“So many of you are so talented, speaking very fluent Mandarin. It is what you contribute and tell them at home that will reflect in the attitude of our people.

“The more you want everything free, it will become more expensive and long-delayed to achieve meaningful development,’’ the President said.

Take-away from China
To the applause of the audience, President Tinubu stated that one key takeaway from his visit to China is the commitment to replicate China’s infrastructure back home.

“We want our children to be in good schools, not tattered huts and dilapidated buildings. We must make our teaching innovative and allow businesses of all kinds and sizes to flourish.

“One economic action leads to another, and it is in your hands to build our nation. Mine is to provide the leadership, and I am committed to doing just that,” the President stated.

According to the statement, ” The President noted that while it is not always easy for a leader to have a national consensus on issues, he is ready to take the hard decisions to move the nation forward.”

He said, “We are focused, and I have a very good team.”

In his remarks, Dr. Oche Barnabas, President of NIDO China, commended President Tinubu for his commitment to strengthening Nigeria-China relations, particularly in trade, investment, and people-to-people collaboration.

Politics / Bill Gates Advocates That Nigeria Spend More On Public Healthcare by Kuginzi: 6:31am On Sep 06
American billionaire and philanthropist, Bill Gates, on Wednesday, remarked that Nigeria’s economy has stagnated, noting that the country’s revenue-to-GDP ratio was better 15 years ago than now.

He advised the Federal Government to prioritise spending on health care as a means to revamp the economy.

Gates, who attended the National Economic Council meeting at the State House in Abuja, highlighted the importance of investing in Nigeria’s most valuable asset—its people—while tackling the country’s economic issues.

He noted that Nigeria is faced with financial constraints but insisted that the health of the populace must be prioritised.

Gates said, “Nigeria’s economy has stagnated. Earlier this year, your debt exceeded 50 per cent of your GDP for the first time since 2001. And while your revenue-to-GDP ratio has grown, it’s still lower than what it was 15 years ago. The result is that Nigeria spends less per-capita on its people than other African countries with a fraction of your wealth.

"I understand this is a politically sensitive area. Nigerians are struggling. Incomes have fallen. Prices have soared. And like in many other countries, people are protesting.

“Taxes are never popular. That’s true in America too. But they’re part of a social compact. People are more likely to pay them when they see the government spending that money to give Nigerians a better life.”

He stressed the need for the government to invest in human capital, beginning with increased healthcare spending.

He said, “After all, priorities without funding are only words. And I know that right now, it’s impossible to give every priority the funding it needs. That’s why it’s more important than ever to focus on the areas you know will make the greatest difference.

"I’ll start with health, because without health, there can be no opportunity.

“Primary care is the first—and sometimes, the only—point of contact most patients have with the health system. Yet Nigeria spends just 3,000 naira on primary health care per person, per year. 70% of your spending goes to secondary and tertiary care, compared to just 30% for primary care. That ratio should be reversed.

"Last year, the Federal Government launched an ambitious HPV vaccination campaign. In one month, Nigeria immunised more girls than 40 other Gavi countries combined did the entire previous year. In total, Nigeria reached more than 12 million girls with this life-saving vaccine.

"That’s genuinely incredible. And I hope you carry the lessons from that campaign to future efforts.”

He said that he had been visiting Nigeria for over two decades, noting that over the years, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had invested over $2.8bn in Nigeria, the largest such investment in Africa.

Gates stated, “ I have been coming to Nigeria for over two decades now. In that time, I have seen performances by Afrobeats legends. I have formed friendships with leaders across sectors. And I’ve met with innovators who are changing the world.

"I am also proud to support their work. To date, our foundation has invested over $2.8bn in Nigeria. It’s our largest commitment in all of Africa.”

He stated that while President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda was ambitious, it faces resource constraints.

Bill Gates said despite common knowledge that that nutrition is crucial for public health and that agriculture plays a vital role in ensuring proper nutrition, “Nigeria has the second-highest rate of food insecurity on earth.”

"You’ve seen how the problem has grown worse as climate change has accelerated. Arable land has disappeared. Pests have wiped out harvests. And prices for staple foods have soared.

“But there are some ways to address this crisis I hope you’ll consider.

"First, Nigeria needs more funding for extension workers, to advise and support farmers; fertilizers, to make sure the soil is healthy enough to grow more crops; and infrastructure, so that farmers have roads to bring their goods to market.

"One key solution is to embrace the new generation of innovative crop varieties that have shorter growing periods, higher yields, and greater resistance to pests,” the American said.

Politics / Rescue Of Medical Students, Corps Members Relieving, Says Peter Obi by Kuginzi: 8:06am On Aug 25
By Donatus Anichukwueze

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has welcomed the rescue of the medical students recently kidnapped in Benue State and the prospective corps members kidnapped in Zamfara in August 2023.

Obi, who described the rescue of both the medical students and corps members as relieving and gladdening, thanked the security agencies who contributed to the rescue operations.

Channels Television reported that the 20 medical students who were abducted in Benue State on their way to Enugu State have been rescued.

"Many of these criminal activities go on unreported in different parts of the nation. Insecurity must stop. Those behind insecurity in Nigeria must be stopped. Our nation must move forward.

“The government and our security agents must now take the lead in protecting the lives and properties of our people from these criminal elements. As I have insisted, a New and more secure Nigeria remains POssible.”

According to security sources, the rescue operation was coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser.

In a related development, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Major General Yusha’u Ahmed, also announced the rescue of all eight prospective corps members who were kidnapped along Funtua-Gusua Road of Zamfara State on August 17, 2023.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, the former Anambra State governor said that beyond rescuing victims, he is encouraging the government and security agents to be more proactive in preventing these criminal activities from occurring in future and in ensuring that those behind these nefarious acts are brought to book.

According to him, insecurity and those behind insecurity must be stopped for the country to move for award.

The post reads, “The two media reports showing the rescue of the 20 Medical Students who were Kidnapped In Benue State and the release of 8 National Youth Corps Members by their captors are relieving and gladdening.

"The NYSC members were kidnapped in Zamfara, on 17th August, while travelling from Uyo in Akwa State to Sokoto State, I thank the combined team of security agencies – the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS the military personnel, and everyone who contributed to the rescue of our children from captivity.

“I commend them for their gallant efforts and sacrifices. Beyond rescuing kidnap victims, I encourage the government, and our security agents to be more proactive in preventing these criminal activities from occurring in future and in ensuring that those behind these nefarious acts are brought to book.

"Until we fully declare war on insecurity in our nation, such ugly stories will continue to define our national existence.

“Just 2 days ago, it was reported that 13 farmers were killed by bandits at the Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State. Another attack by bandits on Moriki Community in Zamfara State was also reported the same day, where about 10 persons were kidnapped.

Many of these criminal activities go on unreported in different parts of the nation. Insecurity must stop. Those behind insecurity in Nigeria must be stopped. Our nation must move forward.

“The government and our security agents must now take the lead in protecting the lives and properties of our people from these criminal elements. As I have insisted, a New and more secure Nigeria remains POssible.”

Politics / Ogun FTZ Dispute: I Won’t Allow Chinese Firm Scam Nigeria – Amosun by Kuginzi: 8:53pm On Aug 17
By Olugbenga Ige

A former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has said he will not allow a Chinese company, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, to scam Nigeria.

PUNCH Online reports that a contract dispute between the Ogun State Government and the Chinese company has led to the seizure of three Nigerian presidential jets.

The dispute reportedly stemmed from a 2007 agreement for the development of the Ogun Free Trade Zone, which later fell apart, leading to arbitration and, ultimately, the seizure of the jets.

Despite an independent arbitral tribunal awarding Zhongshan approximately $74.5 million, the Ogun State Government has disputed the decision and has not yet honoured the award.

In a statement on Saturday titled ‘Zhonfu firm is an imposter, it’s Chinese against Chinese dispute’, Amosun stated that Zhongfu has no legal right to appropriate any Nigerian asset.

Amosun, who was governor of the state between 2011 and 2019, explained that the Chinese government has disowned the firm.

The statement read, “We have read various media accounts of the above in both the print and social media. We have also read and aligned with the very appropriate responses from Ogun State and the Federal Government. At different levels, government is a continuum, and the various segments of events leading to this unfortunate situation occurred before, during and after our administration.

"Our administration assumed office on May 29, 2011. Very shortly after we took office, two different sets of Chinese companies, Messrs China Africa Investment FXE and Zhongfu International Investment FXE, laid claims to Management rights over the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ). The business dispute and rivalry between the Chinese concerns soon became fierce, grounded seamless business activities and threatened public peace and safety within the Zone and neighbouring communities.

"There were claims and counter-claims as to who between the two was the lawful representative of the original joint venturer, Guangdong Province, China and consequentially who had the right to manage the Zone.

“Zhongfu International Investment FXE, pretending to be a concerned and genuine tenant and Zone stakeholder, volunteered very damaging and destructive information about the official representatives of Guangdong Province, the Joint Venturer and lawful Zone Managers, China Africa Investment FXE and subsequently requested to be appointed as Interim Zone Managers.”

Amosun said based on the information at the disposal of the government at the time, Zhongfu International Investment FXE was 15/03/2012 appointed as Interim Zone Manager pending further evaluation.

He added, “The whole idea was to ensure that someone was in charge and thereby prevent unwholesome and untoward development in the Zone pending the completion of our fact-finding exercise.

“It was later discovered that the information and claims volunteered by Zhongfu International Investment FXE against China Africa Investment FXE were tissues of lies.

Unknown to the Ogun Government at the time, Zhongfu International Investment FXE merely sought to de-market China Africa Investment FXE and to surreptitiously covert the State-owned assets of Guangdong Province in China together with the Zone ownership and management rights of their business rival.

"It was further discovered – much later – through the intervention of the Chinese Government via Diplomatic Note 1601, dated 11 March 2016.

Politics / Declare War On Insecurity, Economic Woes, Obi Urges Nigerians by Kuginzi: 2:40pm On Aug 17
By Deborah Sanusi

A former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has made a call to action in response to insecurity and economic hardship in the country.

Citing recent cases of kidnappings, including the abduction of medical students in Benue, and a state commissioner and his wife in Edo, Obi stated that it was time to “declare war on this massive insecurity.”

In a statement on X.com on Saturday, Obi wrote, “When I say we should declare war on the economy, power, and insecurity, some people spin the narrative, while others complain. But what else can we do?

“In the last 24 hours, several people have been kidnapped across Nigeria, including about 20 dental students from Maiduguri and Jos in Benue State.

An Anambra State Commissioner and his wife were abducted in Edo State, and others travelling with them were killed. These are just a few of the many tragic incidents happening across the country.”

The former Anambra State Governor, hence, called for a united battle against the challenges facing the nation.

"We cannot continue living like this,” Obi said. “It’s time for bold action, collective resolve, and a united front against these challenges.”

We must declare war on this massive insecurity and other ills that threaten our society and work tirelessly to build a safer, more prosperous, and just society for all,” he added.

PUNCH Online reported on Friday that not fewer than 20 medical and dental students, along with a house officer, were kidnapped by gunmen in Benue State.

The students were reported to be travelling to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention in Enugu when they were ambushed around 5.30pm in the Otukpo area.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Youths Development in Anambra State, Patrick Aghamba, and his wife were reportedly kidnapped in Edo State on their way to Abuja on Friday.

Politics / Fuel Scarcity: FG Threatens To Withdraw Marketers Licences Over Hoarding by Kuginzi: 9:49am On Aug 17
The Federal Government has threatened to withdraw licences of oil marketers found guilty of hoarding Premium Motor Spirit otherwise known as petrol, following the unabated scarcity in Abuja, Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and many other states.

Some states, especially those in the North have witnessed continuous petrol scarcity for a while now, a situation that has since degenerated into many stations closing up shop due to a lack of supply.

However, the Federal Government through its Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has issued a warning to oil marketers that filling stations that hoard petrol and sell to black marketers in jerrycans would have their licences withdrawn.

The warning was handed down by the Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure, NMDPRA, Ogbugo Ukoha, in a video clip shared by the regulator during an inspection tour in Abuja.

Ukoha was heard telling one of the managers of the inspected stations that “You need to take this (warning) very seriously. If you need security reinforcements, speak to your management.”

He said retail petrol stations should stop encouraging the sale of products to black marketers who dispense the products in jerrycans.

Ukoha said such actions posed serious safety concerns and should be discontinued.

Also on its X handle, the downstream regulator said it had declared war against the illegal sale of petroleum products.

“NMDPRA embarks on a war against the illegal sale of petroleum products, especially PMS in jerrycans. Filling stations are advised to desist from servicing illegal peddlers; failure to do so would result in the suspension of retail licences,” the agency stated.

On July 27, NNPCL spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, said the fuel scarcity witnessed in Abuja and Lagos was due to a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels.

“The NNPC Ltd wishes to state that the tightness in fuel supply and distribution witnessed in some parts of Lagos and the FCT is a result of a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels,”
Soneye had explained

According to him, the company was working around the clock with all stakeholders to resolve the situation and restore normalcy in operations.

At some point, the NNPCL also said the fuel crisis was caused by bad weather.

"Adherence to these regulations is mandatory as any deviation could pose a severe danger to the trucks, filling stations, and human lives. Similarly, the development was compounded by consequential flooding of truck routes, which has constrained the movement of PMS from the coastal corridors to the Federal Capital, Abuja,” he added, saying loading had commenced at the time.

Despite the promises, petrol scarcity has persisted in many northern states.

By Kayode Oyero.

Renowned Professor of History and African Studies, Toyin Falola, says the President Bola Tinubu government has failed to address the major triggers for the #EndBadGovernance protests that reverberated in most states in Nigeria earlier in August.

The septuagenarian professor at the University of Texas was a guest on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political programme aired on Channels Television on Friday.

He said the protesters were charitable to announce their protests weeks ahead, giving the government time to map out strategies to stifle the impact of the rallies.

Falola, however, said the Tinubu administration should fear spontaneous and uncontrollable protests like those being experienced in South Asian country Bangladesh where young demonstrators are against the policies of fleeing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Between August 1 and 10, young demonstrators held rallies in most cities in Nigeria, protesting high cost of living and soaring food prices. The protesters also asked Tinubu to reverse the subsidy on petrol for prices of basic commodities to drop.

On August 4, 2024, Tinubu addressed Nigerians and ruled out the return of petrol subsidies, a major demand of #EndBadGovernance campaigners.

Speaking on the programme, the don faulted the presidential statement on the #EndBadGovernance protests, saying the major issues of hunger, skyrocketing energy costs, high standard of living and insecurity raised by young demonstrators were not addressed by the President.

"When the President issues his own, no issue around fuel subsidy, no issue around infrastructure, no talk about electricity, no talk about security – – all the elements that drove the protests.

"Aṣọ Rock’s fundamental reaction was: ‘we don’t want anyone to destabilise the government’.
Nobody wants to destabilise the government.

“Of course, some elements took advantage of protests with the Russian flags, calls for coup, but the protest was not about destabilising the government; the protesters were not calling for a coup. Of course, in Kaduna, they did but that was not the original intention which was to say, ‘we are very hungry’. Are they not hungry? They are.”

He said there is no way Tinubu won’t know about the rising cost of living in Nigeria, fuelled by persistent inflationary pressure in the country.

Falola said, “He (Tinubu) knows, and making excuses is not the way to govern but at the end of the day, we are lucky that there were no damages. People were expecting Igbo-Yoruba warfare in Lagos (but) it didn’t happen.

"The fundamental things that produced the protest are still there. What the government should pay attention to is that undated or unannounced or unplanned protest that is more dangerous. Because you cannot control that one. This one that there was notice and you can put your police or bullies on the streets. But the protest to fear is like that of Bangladesh.”

Politics / Speaker Bows To Pressure, Withdraws Controversial Counter Subversion Bill by Kuginzi: 8:35pm On Aug 14
By Adetutu Sobowale

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has withdrawn the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislations following widespread public concern.

The decision, announced in a press statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, Musa Krishi, on Wednesday was said to have come after extensive consultations with various stakeholders and a careful assessment of the nation’s current circumstances.

The Counter Subversion Bill, which was introduced on July 23, 2024, sparked public debate and raised concerns about its potential impact on civil liberties.

The statement read, “In response to the voices and concerns of the people, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has decided to withdraw the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislation.

His decision to withdraw the bill reflects his commitment to ensuring that the House of Representatives remains a true representation of the people’s will.”

Krishi noted that the withdrawal of the bill underscores Tajudeen’s pledge to never support any legislation that could potentially disrupt the peace and unity of the nation.

"Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, a champion of the people’s interests, has always prioritised listening to the citizens and fostering unity. His decision reflects his commitment to ensuring that the House remains truly the People’s House.

"He acknowledges the significance of the concerns raised and the attention the Bill has garnered, reaffirming that he will never support any action that might disrupt the peace and unity of our nation.

“The public is hereby notified of the withdrawal of the Counter Subversion Bill and other related ones introduced on July 23, 2024,” he added.

The Counter Subversion Bill 2024 went viral on social media on Tuesday after it scaled through the first reading and proceeded to the second, where its general principles would be debated on July 23.

It aims to impose stringent penalties on Nigerians who fail to recite the newly approved national anthem or abuse politicians or community leaders.

According to the bill, anyone found guilty shall be fined up to N5 million and would face five to 10 years prison sentence or both.

Crime / Protest: Sudan Crisis Mastermind Planned To Destabilise Nigeria – IGP by Kuginzi: 9:46pm On Aug 12
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday said a man, who was one of the masterminds of the crisis that ravaged Sudan, was among the organisers of just-concluded #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest.

Egbetokun, clarified that the operatives of the force did not raid headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), but an office in the building being used by the foreigner.

The police chief, who stated this in Abuja during a Youth Summit organised by the force, specifically said the raid was not targeted at the labour leaders but the foreigner hiding in one of the offices at the popular Labour House in Abuja.

The top cop, while fielding questions after the summit, said the foreigner who was traced to the Labour House later escaped, saying valuable documents in connection with his “activities” were recovered.

He said, “My response to this will be in three parts. Number one is that, of course, our responsibility is not to protest but to manage protest. Two is that the intelligence at the disposal of the police, anyone who knows what we know about this protest, will not come out to protest.

“We had intelligence at our disposal that some agents of destabilisation are ready to use the hardship protest to destabilise our country. I won’t be able to share the details yet because we are still on the trail of these individuals.

"Some of them are already out of the country, and they immediately escape. Some of them are even foreigners. One of them was traced to the Labour House the other day, and I was just wondering why the noise about the raid on the Labour House.

“We raided only a shop that the individual was using as a front and we have been monitoring his activities. He was very active in the Sudan crisis and he’s in Nigeria mobilising people to destabilise our country.

"We traced him to that shop and our detectives raided his shop. We recovered valuable documents, so there was no need for the noise about the raid of the Labour House.”

Egbetokun said the police would always be against any protest in the country because of the experience police had during #EndSARS riots in 2020, arguing that any protest that started on social media has tendencies of being violent.

He stated, “I always refer to the #EndSARS protest which turned violent. It started initially as peaceful, but any protest that is mobilised on social media has the potential to be violent because when you are mobilising on social media, you are mobilising the whole population, including the criminals.

“So, the idea of the protest being hijacked, I don’t believe that a protest that is mobilised on social media is hijacked. Hijacked by who? By the same people that were mobilised for the protest.

"So, our experience in the past in previous protests would not make the police want to take part in any protest that we know is going to be violent.”

Earlier, the former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Olanrewaju Fagbohun, who was the guest lecturer advised the federal government to be intentional about engaging the youths in the country about current situation in the country.

Politics / Your PVC ‘Greatest Weapon’ To Remove Bad Leaders – Al-Mustapha Tells Nigeria by Kuginzi: 9:02pm On Aug 12
Former Chief Security Officer to the late military head of state, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd), has called on Nigerian youths to use their voter cards to unseat bad leaders.

Al-Mustapha spoke in Abuja on Monday at the commemoration of the International Youth Day Celebration 2024 by the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

Al-Mustapha accused politicians of being disconnected from the people.

He said: “They’re not connected to the villages and do not know how the councils and local governments functioned before and that is why the LG system was crippled.

“This is part of the crisis the federal government is trying to handle today. If the LGs were functioning, we would not have the food supply chain cut off because the foods are being produced at the community and LG levels.

“Today, insecurity, kidnapping, barbarism and the failure of leadership have crippled our communities. They cannot even farm. The crop of leaders from 1999 who are not career politicians queued in and hijacked the system and this is the only reason a governor will tell you that the state resources belong to him and say, ‘It’s my money’.

"This situation, we have the capacity to change it and we can change it through only one way. In a democracy, the day of the election is the day of coup and the weapon for coup is your fingers. You change bad leaders by voting them out, not with guns.

“And then, all of you here, you have your weapons, you have your guns – your fingers. Now, if you don’t use it, who would you blame? People rig elections where they’re not popular. Nobody will rig if you cast your votes and work together to protect them. I’m happy that the era of rigging is gone.

"If you see millions of youths on the streets, you will assume that the world is coming to an end. You can’t afford the injustices in Nigeria that have kept us where we are today.

"I read the recent report released by the MBS; our judges are the most corrupt judges in the world. Get your PVC. That is your greatest weapon. Don’t be deterred. Don’t let anyone intimidate you. This is our country.”

Politics / One Million-man March Flops, Hunger Protest Quietly Ends by Kuginzi: 4:51am On Aug 11
By Solomon Odeniyi, Dennis Naku, Adeyinka Adedipe, Peter Dada, Tukur Muntari, Godwin Isenyo, Bankole Taiwo, Ismaeel Uthman and Bola Bamigbola

The one million-man march planned by leaders of the #EndBadGovernance protest flopped on Saturday across the country due to low turnout.

In different parts of Nigeria, protesters shunned their usual meeting points, which had been occupied by security agents.

Organisers of the protest had said the march would signal the end of the 10-day protest against economic hardship.

In preparation for the march, security agencies deployed operatives into cities as roadblocks were mounted.

Low turnout in Abuja

The security situation was the same on Saturday as the police mounted barricades on all roads leading to Eagle Square, the venue where the protesters intended to converge for the protest.

Although protests were held in the Lokogoma and Apo areas of the FCT, the turnout was noticeably lower compared to previous events.

The protest waned in the FCT after security forces targeted leaders, arresting and shooting at protesters.

After there was calm, protesters returned to the streets.

The youth, who began their demonstration as early as 7 am were chrousing ‘End hunger’ and ‘Reverse fuel subsidy removal,” among others.

Rivers police patrol

In Rivers, protesters were absent on the streets of Port Harcourt and its environs.

It was the third day in a roll that residents refused to come out over fear that the demonstration would be hijacked by hoodlums.

This came as operatives of the Rivers State Police Command embarked on a show of force with huge presence in strategic parts of the state.

The state spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement on Friday night, had said some miscreants were planning to hijack the one million-man march to loot and attack peaceful residents.

One of our correspondents, who monitored the state on Saturday, reported that cops were seen in patrol vans as security was intensified.

Police patrol vans were also mounted at the gate of the Federal Secretariat, while several operatives hung around in vigilance in the event of any untoward incident.

When contacted, one of the supporters of the protest, Gogo Wellington, said he did not show up due to fear of violence.

He recalled with bitterness how some persons tried to attack some protesters.

“For that reason, we decided not to come out to avoid any clash.

“We hope that the government will be up and doing and immediately address the problems,” he added.

Kaduna, Kano, Katsina stop protest

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that residents of Kaduna, Kano and Katsina States shunned the one-million-man nationwide protest.

NAN added that hordes of people were seen going about their business activities.

Markets, motor parks, supermarkets and other economic activities were going on unfettered.

Commercial motorists and motorcyclists were also busy conveying passengers to and from their various destinations.

The Kaduna State Government insisted that unverified processions were not permitted in the state for reasons of public safety and security.

The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, gave the warning in a statement on Saturday.

In Kano, some of the residents of Kano metropolitan local government areas said they would not participate again in any form of protests in the state.

The police and military personnel were also deployed in strategic locations in the state.

In Katsina, protest organisers complied with the order issued by the police and the state government that banned all forms of protests and unlawful assembly.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, said the order was still in force across the state.

He said the measure was aimed at preventing further escalation of violence, vandalism, and looting of private and public property.

Edo residents shun demonstrations

The Civil Society Organisations, organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protest in Edo State, could not gather people for a rally on the final day of the protest.

The group, which had chosen Ring Road as its protest venue, withdrew from the protest on the third day, stating that they would review their strategy.

The state capital, Benin, was peaceful on Saturday, with residents going about their business unhindered.

Oba Market and Lagos Street, the major commercial hubs, experienced a surge of activity as people conducted their transactions.

Similarly, Uromi in Edo Central and Auchi in Edo North were also peaceful, with no protests taking place in those areas.

Kola Edokpayi, speaking on behalf of the Concerned Civil Society Group in Edo, confirmed that there were no plans to resume the strike on Saturday.

Plateau protesters meet gov

Meanwhile, a coalition of youths in Plateau State presented its demands to the state Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Saturday, for transmission to President Bola Tinubu.

A representative of the group, Mr Sam Ode, stated that the demands required the input of both the state government and the Federal Government.

“For the state government, we demand an immediate reduction in the cost of governance. We also request an explanation of how the various palliatives and funding from the Federal Government are being utilised.

“We further call on the state government to implement the minimum wage recently signed into law by the president and to reduce the school fees of tertiary institutions.

For the Federal Government, we urge the president to end corruption, reverse the pump price of fuel to N300, and also reverse the hike in electricity tariffs,” Ode said.

Ondo gov candidate arrested

Meanwhile, men of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested no fewer than nine youths who took part in the #EndBadGovernance protest in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Saturday.

It was gathered that the protest, which happened at the NEPA Roundabout area in Akure, the state capital, was disrupted by men of the state police command.

According to one of the protesters, Tope Temokun, some of those arrested are the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, Kunle Ajayi; Patrick Owolabi, Oluwatobi Akinkuotu, Kolawole Kumuyi and Olalekan Oladehinde.

He said, “The arrest that took place is highly condemnable and stands condemned. If the police has any evidence of violence from the protesters, it should come out with it.

Group threatens to continue protest

But a group, Nigerian Patriotic Front Movement, Northern chapter, threatened to begin an indefinite protest after the curfew in the state is lifted.

The Secretary of the NPFM, Anas Adamu, said the group would resume the protest because the President, Bola Tinubu, failed to address their demands 10 days after the commencement of the nationwide protest.

He said, “We are all aware that Nigeria is facing a major governance and economic crisis, which the government of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has, in 15 months, exacerbated.”

Politics / Hardship: Why Igbo Shunned Nationwide Protest — Ukwu, Ameh, Igbo Elders by Kuginzi: 8:03am On Aug 10
It is no longer news that Igbo, especially in the five Southeast states, did not participate in the End Bad Governance protest that started in other parts of the country on August 1.

However, why the Igbo shunned the protest and the implications for the country are raising issues in the polity.

Across other parts of the country, angry protesters stormed the streets and for more than five days vented their spleen against what they described as bad Governance, hunger and hardship in the country. The protest became riotous in the North as hoodlums looted shops, and business centres among others. Many states declared curfews to contain the mayhem.

But there was pin-drop silence in the South-East leading many to ask if the zone and Igbo are insulated from the prevailing economic downturn in the country.

Ameh fingers inequity, injustice

Speaking on the issue, Chief Peter Ameh, former Presidential candidate and national secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, said the “absence of equity, justice and fairness is the reason for the political apathy by Igbo in the Nigerian project.”

According to him, “constant and unjust scapegoating of the Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria is the major reason why Igbo abstained from the nationwide protests.”

He continued: “Failure to implement General Yakubu Gowon’s Reconstruction, Reconciliation and Rehabilitation programme is a catalyst for growing lack of commitment by all persons of Igbo extraction within and outside Nigeria in many programmes of the government.”

Chief Ameh also attributed Igbo boycott of the protest to “marginalisation of Igbo in strategic economic and administrative positions under the APC governments, and acts of tribal exclusion mixed with political bigotry.”

He continued: “The main reason why the entire Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria was unanimous in their decision not to participate in the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest across the country is primarily as a result of the easy targeting of lives and property of Igbo whenever there is an uprising or protests in Nigeria.

"Being the only tribe in Nigeria that could be found and visibly seen in the remotest parts of the country, Igbo are always at the receiving end of the consequences of any activity carried out either by the Nigerian government or the public.

Politics / Most Nigerian Leaders Should Be Behind Bars, Gallows – Obasanjo by Kuginzi: 7:42am On Aug 10
Former Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday, expressed disapproval at the current state of the country, saying that the majority of its leaders should be behind bars or gallows instead of public offices.

Obasanjo, who spoke while addressing six lawmakers from the House of Representatives, maintained that in choosing good leaders, characters must be considered and questioned.

The former president asserted that until leaders changed their mentality, the country would never see the change it desired.

“Our main problem is ourselves and until we take care of ourselves, we may have one term of four years, one term of six years, one term of seven years, if it’s the same people and same mentality and way we do things, then it won’t change.

“Yes system, yes democracy, we have to rethink democracy, we have to rethink the form of government, but what is the character of the people in government?

“With all due respect, most of them should be behind bars, some should even be in the gallows and that is the truth.

"Now if these are the people that are ruling us, then what do you expect? So, the point is the character of the people that are coming to the government. Their attributes, the sort of people they truly are.

“We need to really think about how we select leaders, what should be the character of a leader we select? What should be their track record ?

“Where should we find them? Are they role models? And I think those are the first things we have to think about,” he stated.

The lawmakers’ entourage included Abdulmalik Danga from Kogi, Dr Usman Midala from Borno, Matthew Nwogu from Imo, Peter Aniekwe from Anambra, Kama Nkemkanma from Ebonyi and Ugochinyere Ikenga from Imo.

Politics / Obasanjo Warns Tinubu Govt Of Dire Consequences If It Neglects #endbadgovernance by Kuginzi: 7:51pm On Aug 09
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has again cautioned the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government about the potential repercussions if it fails to address the demands fuelling the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.
Obasanjo on Friday addressed six members of the National Assembly during a visit to his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State.
He noted the need for the Federal Government to heed the concerns that sparked nationwide youth protests, calling their demands legitimate.
Obasanjo warned of potential severe consequences if the government failed to address these issues promptly.

The six legislators, who are co-sponsoring a bill proposing a single six-year presidential term with rotational presidency between the North and South, were present at the event.
The former President urged the government to take the youth’s concerns seriously, stating that their frustration stems from poverty, unemployment, and a lack of listening.
He stressed that the country’s progress depended on a collective effort and a shift in mindset.
Obasanjo argued that the debate should not center on the length of presidential terms but rather on changing the mentality of those in power.

He, however, suggested that whether Nigeria adopts a single six-year term or maintains the current system, the effectiveness of governance hinges on trust in institutions and leadership.

Politics / Most Protesters Were Almajiris, Didn’t Know Reason For Rallies – Governor Sule by Kuginzi: 9:38pm On Aug 08
By Emmanuel Egobiambu

The Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule wants the north to address its challenges, saying most of the protesters during the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in the state were Almajiris who knew nothing about the rallies.

The #EndBadGovernance demonstrations which started on August 1 across cities in the country – to press home for a better economy – were largely peaceful initially. But the protests assumed worrying dimensions after looting and destruction in some northern states led to the imposition of curfews.

Governor Sule who is worried that some of the people who protested were young persons said most of them did not know why the processions were taking place.

“During this last protest that we had in Lafia, the majority of those that came out on the streets were the Almajiris – some of them five years old, seven years old, nine years old,” the governor said on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“A lot of them didn’t even understand the meaning of the protest. When I spoke with them later, they didn’t even know what they were protesting against.”

"A Ticking Time Bomb’
One of the ways to address the level of illiteracy in the north, according to the governor, is to educate the people. He said the protests are an eye-opener for leaders in the region, tasking them to double up their efforts in fixing issues affecting them.

“So, we must sit down. At one point in the year 2020, we sat down as the governors and took the decision about the Almajiris. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out well. They went back to square one,” Governor Sule said.

“Some of the religious leaders criticized it. But from what happened now, I don’t believe anybody will continue to criticize actions that will be taken in order to move forward. Otherwise, it’s a ticking time bomb, it will come and consume every one of us.”

One of the biggest problems we have in the north, from the day I came, is the idea of education and the one we are still pushing on,” Sule said.

“When people actually don’t have education and don’t have economic empowerment, these people will continue to behave the way these Almajiri actually behaved during this protest. So, education must be taken seriously in the North. We must be honest with one another.”

Politics / Nigerians Angry Because Tinubu Is Deceiving Them – CDD Ex-Director, Ibrahim by Kuginzi: 6:37pm On Aug 08
By Abdulyassar Abdulhamid

Jibrin Ibrahim, a professor of Political Science and a member of governing board of the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD) has said that Nigerians are angry because they are being deceived the President Bola Tinubu government.

Ibrahim, a former CDD Director, stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

He said governance was collapsing in Nigeria because the government had failed in its promises.

He added that because of the level of inflation in the country Nigerians were starving on a daily basis.

Ibrahim said, “When they removed the fuel subsidy, they said in weeks we will have CNG buses and the price of transportation will crash. They said this 13 months ago. Nigerians have not seen those buses. It is called waiting for Godot in literature. When you are told continuously that you will see them and you wait for weeks, months and a year and nothing is coming. You know that what you are told is just a narrative not based on reality.

"That is why Nigerians are very upset. They are very angry. They are being deceived regularly and systematically by a government that feels that it can tell stories and we survive. We refuse to do what we need to do but we survive because we tell stories that will cover up. And Nigerians said no you can’t tell stories.”

The political analyst noted that patients were dying on a daily basis because they did not not have money to buy medicine.

According to him, Nigerians are starving because of the economic situation in the country, but the government wants them to starve in silence.

Politics / Security Operatives Raid NLC Headquarters, Cart Away Documents by Kuginzi: 6:35am On Aug 08
Heavily armed security personnel stormed and raided the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Thursday, the union has said.

According to the union, the operatives stormed the Labour House, as its headquarters is called, around 8:30 pm.

"They broke in and ransacked the bookshop on the 2nd floor carting away hundreds of books and other publications,” said a statement by the NLC’s head of Media and Public Relations, Benson Upah.

“The invading troop claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGoveranance Protests.”

The NLC is not immediately able to ascertain all the things taken away from its offices.

The raid, which was carried out six days after the #EndBadGovernance protests started, has been blasted by the union. The NLC also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the security operatives from its headquarters.

"The Nigeria Labour Congress condemns in its entirety this new low in security operations in Nigeria. The armed security operatives showed no legal document permitting them to invade the premises of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the ungodly hours of the night,” the NLC said.

“Even in the dark days of military rule, NLC secretariats were never invaded and ransacked by security agents. Today is indeed a very sad day for our democracy.”

Read the NLC’s full statement below:

Press Release

This evening at about 8.30 pm long after the close of work, a troop of heavily armed security operatives invaded the Labour House, Central Business District, Abuja which serves as the National Headquarters and Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The security operatives, some from the Nigeria Police Force, some wearing black tee-shirts presumably from the Department of State Services (DSS), and others on outright mufti swooped on the 10th Floor of the NLC and arrested the security operative on duty and then commandeered him to the second floor where he was asked to produce the keys to the offices. When he told them that he had no such keys on him, they broke into the 10th floor and ransacked the bookshop on the 2nd floor carting away hundreds of books and other publications. The invading troop claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGoveranance Protests.

The Nigeria Labour Congress condemns in its entirety this new low in security operations in Nigeria. The armed security operatives showed no legal document permitting them to invade the premises of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the ungodly hours of the night. Even in the dark days of military rule, NLC secretariats were never invaded and ransacked by security agents. Today is indeed a very sad day for our democracy.

Just this afternoon, the National Executive Council of the NLC took note and vehemently condemned the high-handed manner that security agents manhandled protesters in many parts of the country and the needless bloodshed that ensued. We also condemned the sweeping mass arrests of those perceived to have led the protest. The NEC also frowned at the reckless use of ‘treason’ to describe the protest and demanded for moderation. What we did not see coming was the invasion of the Labour House by masked and heavily armed security operatives hours later.

In the light of the foregoing and the ominous sign it portends for democratic rights, freedom of speech and association, and the unimpeachable right of citizens to protest peacefully on any issue they feel strongly about, we call on the international community to take note of the deterioration of democratic principles in the bid to turn Nigeria into a Police State. Given the experience of the leadership of the NLC in recent times at the receiving end of the naked brute force of the state especially the near daylight assassination of the NLC President by security operatives and thugs, our fears of a Nigerian state that is descending into enforced brutality are well founded. We fear that the situation might deteriorate.

Given the state of things, the Nigeria Labour Congress has directed all its staff to stay away from the Labour House for now until we are certain that there are no incriminating materials or harmful substances dropped in our offices by the invading operatives. In order to allay our fears, we demand an international inquiry into this very traumatic invasion.

Finally, we demand the immediate withdrawal of the troops of invading security agents from the premises of the Labour House, Abuja. We also demand that all the books and materials carted away by the invading security operatives should be returned unfailingly to where they were taken from before the end of work tomorrow, 8th August 2024. We make this demand given the illegality of the operation as there was no court order for the invasion, ransacking and looting of the publications.

If this harassment continues, the Nigeria Labour Congress will not hesitate to call on its members to stay home until their safety and security are assured. We warn that the asphyxiation of the public space and channels for constructive engagement, dialogue and negotiations in light of the excruciating difficulties that Nigerians are going through right now would only make matters worse. A stitch in time might still save nine!

Politics / Tinubu Rules Out Return Of Fuel Subsidy, Says Decision Painful But Necessary by Kuginzi: 7:23am On Aug 04
By Baba Martins

Contrary to the demands of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protesters, President Bola Tinubu has ruled out the return of fuel subsidy.

The President in a Nationwide broadcast to Nigerians on Sunday morning, disclosed that even though the decision to remove the fuel Subsidy was painful, it was necessary because it has constituted a noose around the economic “jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress.”

The President also told the protesters that law enforcement agencies would continue to ensure the full protection of lives and properties of innocent citizens in a responsible manner, adding that “Our democracy progresses when the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected.”

President Tinubu stated that, “My vision for our country is one of a just and prosperous nation where each person may enjoy the peace, freedom, and meaningful livelihood that only democratic good governance can provide – one that is open, transparent and accountable to the Nigerian people.

"For decades, our economy has remained anaemic and taken a dip because of many misalignments that have stunted our growth. Just over a year ago, our dear country, Nigeria, reached a point where we couldn’t afford to continue the use of temporary solutions to solve long-term problems for the sake of now and our unborn generations.

"I therefore took the painful yet necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems which had constituted a noose around the economic jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress.”

He said these actions “blocked the greed and the profits that smugglers and rent-seekers made. They also blocked the undue subsidies we had extended to our neighbouring countries to the detriment of our people, rendering our economy prostrate.

"These decisions I made were necessary if we must reverse the decades of economic mismanagement that didn’t serve us well. Yes, I agree, the buck stops on my table. But I can assure you that I am focused fully on delivering the governance to the people – good governance for that matter.”

Politics / Hunger Protest: Tinubu’s Silence Heightening Public Apprehension – PDP by Kuginzi: 12:40pm On Aug 03
By Abdulrahman Zakariyau

The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised President Bola Tinubu for not addressing the nation amid the nationwide EndBadGovernance protests.

Amid severe economic hardships, many Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities. In response, youths began protests on Thursday, continuing into Friday, across Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, and other regions, demanding an end to hunger and poor governance.

In a statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP urged Tinubu to break his silence, address the nation immediately, and reassure citizens of the pressing issues affecting them.

The statement read in part, “The PDP demands that President Tinubu immediately address Nigerians on urgent steps to reduce the price of petroleum products, stem the fall of the Naira and ensure speedy provision of food among other critical issues so as to revamp the productive sector, stimulate employment and restore stability in the polity.

"Our Party expresses concerns that President Tinubu’s silence is sending a very dangerous signal and heightening public apprehension that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government is insensitive to the feelings of the citizens and the overall sorry state of affairs in the nation.

“It is indeed worrisome that President Tinubu could remain silent as Nigerians are on the streets demanding good governance, protection, security and welfare, which are the primary purposes of government.

"The world is watching in horror as operatives of APC-controlled security agencies assault, shoot and kill unarmed protesters, with thugs allegedly mobilized by the APC also unleashing violence on innocent Nigerians.”

The opposition party also demanded a comprehensive investigation into the reported killing of unarmed Nigerians, allegedly by security operatives.

It continued, “Our Party calls on President Tinubu to end his silence, immediately address the nation and reassure the citizens on issues agitating their minds, particularly the reduction in the price of petroleum products and food items.

"Our Party insists that with deft, transparent and innovative management of resources, economic potentials, comparative advantage and refining capacity, petrol should not sell more than N200 per litre in Nigeria, especially with a strategic investment in gas production.

"President Tinubu should also urgently commence the process of recovering the over N50 trillion reportedly stolen by APC leaders, reduce tariffs on essential goods, cut the cost of governance, review all luxury items in his government and channel funds recovered to programmes that have a direct bearing on the wellbeing of Nigerians.

"Furthermore, while calling for a thorough investigation into the reported killing of unarmed Nigerians by certain unscrupulous security operatives, the PDP urges the security agencies to ensure a high level of professionalism in their duty of providing security and protection to the citizens.”

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Calls For Prayer To Avert Too Many Deaths In Igboland by Kuginzi: 4:33am On Aug 01
By Seun Opejobi

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed pain over the deaths of Ohanaeze President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former Minister Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Ifeanyi Uba, and Onyeka Onwenu.

Kanu called for prayers to avert too many deaths in Igbo land.

The IPOB leader also cautioned against speaking ill about Iwuanyanwu, Onu, Uba, and Onwenu because it’s against Igbo tradition.

Kanu disclosed this during his routine meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services facility in Abuja.

Making Kanu’s remark public, his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, said: “Today, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu directed me to convey his heartfelt sympathies to the families of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Ifeanyi Uba and Dame Onyeka Onwenu.

“MNK is pained at their demise and as he mourns, he sends his comfort to Ndigbo and requests that none should speak ill of the departed, as such is repugnant to Igbo traditions.

"He sees these deaths to be too many in so short a time and calls for prayers to avert too many deaths from the land.

“Onyeka Onwenu in particular was very close to Onyendu, who found her private advice to be invaluable. MNK recalls that Onyeka was a firm believer in freedom and that she lived a fulfilled life that guaranteed her eternal rest in heaven.”

Politics / Protests: IGP Orders Officers To ‘deal Decisively’ With Arsonists, Troublemakers by Kuginzi: 4:00am On Aug 01
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed his men across the country to “deal decisively” with arsonists and troublemakers as youths stage #EndBadGovernance protests against hunger and economic hardship across the Federation starting on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

In a statement he personally signed on the eve of the nationwide protests, the police boss said the organisers of the planned demonstrations failed to furnish the police with the details of the protests including the names of intending participants, routes of rallies, among others.

The IGP said “the name given to the movement — ‘Take It Back Movement’ has far-reaching undemocratic, unconstitutional and illegal connotations”.

He said intelligence revealed that the protests are aimed at unleashing mayhem on the polity and innocent citizens.

Egbetokun said the police won’t fold their arms and watch a degeneration of the situation into a “state of anomy”.

He put all police formations across the country on alert to protect innocent lives and properties from attack and destruction.

“All officers and men of the Nigeria Police are hereby directed to act and deal decisively with any act of arson, intimidation or harassment of any citizen, threat to lives and properties, breach of peace and any act of criminality that may arise or flow from the planned protest in any part of the country.

“Perpetrators of any crime will be arersted and promptly prosecuted,”
he said.

The planned protests against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, have been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the nation’s capital Abuja in August.

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic crises sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

The police, military and the Department of State Services had warned against Kenya-styled protests. Politicians, who surmised that the planned rallies might end up like the EndSARS demonstrations of October 2020, have continued to appeal to youths to shelve the planned rallies but the young people remain unfazed, doggedly insisting that the protests will hold.

Politics / Don’t Bring Your Hunger Protest To Niger Delta, Asari-Dokubo Warns by Kuginzi: 8:53pm On Jul 30
Former Niger Delta freedom fighter, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has warned organisers of the planned nationwide protest against hardship scheduled for August 1 not to come to the Niger Delta.

Dokubo-Asari said the agenda of those behind the protest do not capture the problems of the people of the Niger Delta.

While daring them to come to the oil and gas-rich region, he said they would be resisted, alleging that they were merely interested in the resources coming from the Niger Delta, describing them as ‘anarchist.

This is as the former leader of the defunct Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force alleged that some people who lost the election were backing the protest aimed at removing the government in power.

Dokubo-Asari, handed down the warning while speaking at the Niger Delta Sensitisation Conference for Ethnic Nationalities, Youths, and Women’ with the theme ‘Come let us build together’ held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday.

He stated, “I and all those who believe in me and those of you who are committed to the interest of the Niger Delta, we are not going to be part of any protest. It is as clear as that.

“If anybody has the right to protest, I also have the right to resist protest. Where your right stops, that is where my right begins. ”

He said the same people who protested against former President Goodluck Jonathan, who hails from Niger Delta, have come with the same tactic against another Southerner in the person of President Bola Tinubu, urging the people not to be carried away by sweet talk.

Dokubo-Asari stated, “I’m anti-protest. When our brother was here (making a veiled reference to Jonathan) they protested. Today, another of our brothers is here. They want to protest. That is the truth.

“When you allow yourself to be used, when you always bend your back for people to ride on you, they will continue to ride on you.

"Are our needs included in their 10 points demand? No. So, we are not important to them. But it is our resources that they want to share. I want to say that me, I have the capacity. If you carry your protest near where I am, you will collect (they will be resisted).”

While referring to the #EndSARS protest, he said, “Those who brought anti-protest and went to Oyigbo (Rivers State), they collected (they got what they deserve). Everybody knows, the government, the security agencies knows it. I gave it to them.

“Look, don’t be deceived by people’s flowery words and statements. What have they done to impact their society and the environment?

"The lack of hospitals in Buguma, Abonema, and the entire Kalabari land didn’t start today. It has always been like that. And I will not expect my friend to come (referring to President Bola Tinubu) one year later because there has been no hospital in Buguma since the 90s. I should then kick my friend out of power.

"I will not be part of it. These are anarchists. When you lose the election, wait for another election season. It is four years. Sell yourself to the people, but you don’t want to.

“After you have failed, you continue. Then you’re not patriotic; you’re the problem of this country. President Bola Tinubu won the elections against all odds. No candidate has gone through the travails President Tinubu went through to win the elections.

"I went through to win the elections.

“Everything was against him, but he triumphed. Wait for your turn. You heard what happened in Imo State yesterday (Monday) where they killed police officers.

“That is what they want to do. And we must resist them. We must not allow them to bring their anarchy here.

“But if you are stubborn and you want to bring it here, I’m not President Tinubu, I’m not in the government, I’m not the Chief of Army Staff or the Inspector General of Police, but if you do it anyway, you will see it anyway.

Politics / Nothing Good Will Come Out Of Your Protest, Sudanese Cleric Warns Nigerians by Kuginzi: 9:28pm On Jul 27
By Mohammed I. Yaba

A Sudanese cleric, Ambassador Al-Mustapha Bala Assudany, has cautioned Nigerians, particularly youths, against embarking on protest over economic hardship, saying nothing positive will come out of it.

Worried by the economic hardship amid rising inflation, some Nigerians fixed August 1 – August 10 for nationwide protest.

The government, religious leaders, traditional rulers, among others have appealed to young persons to have a rethink on the protest, but they have insisted to go ahead.

Weighing in on the situation during the pre-huduba sermon at the famous Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna, the cleric cautioned the youths not to give room to enemies of the country to destroy Nigeria.

He took about 20 minutes sharing his experience as a Sudanese citizen about what happened before and after the protest that led to war in the country.

According to him, enemies of Nigeria are indirectly instigating innocent youths to embark on the protest just as they did to Sudanese, leading to civil war.

He said Nigerians need to learn from Sudan’s experience to avoid bloodshed or any action that could lead to the destruction of peace.

He listed Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan as countries which suffered destruction from what started as peaceful protests.

Ambassador Assudany said presently 2 out of the 3 percent of Sudan’s population have abandoned their houses and fled the city center, while some fled to other countries due to war.

“Before they started talking about the planned protest in Nigeria, it happened in some Muslim countries like Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, and Sudan. I’m a Sudanese citizen and what happened in Sudan was the same thing that happened in other Muslim countries.”

"When I heard about the planned protest in Nigeria, I felt as a Muslim I should share the experience of what I saw in Sudan and what happened in other Muslim countries. Economic hardship was responsible for all the protests witnessed in those countries. That was what led people to protest in Sudan, thinking a solution would come through protest.

Those that started were Sudanese citizens in an attempt to draw the attention of the government to end their hardship. But the opposition groups that were against the government penetrated them because every government has opposition. This was what led to the chaos in the country.

"Some foreign countries also took advantage of the protest and came into the country. They were the ones sponsoring these youths and supporting them. This led to regime change in the country but despite that there was no peace in the country.

"Many people thought after the regime changed there would be peace in the country but it turned out to cause more chaos across the country. As we speak, Khartoum, which is the capital of Sudan, has been completely destroyed and the residents fled.

The war spread to other parts of the country. There was crisis everywhere, people being killed in villages, women raped, kidnapped, and sold as slaves in foreign lands. This is why I’m calling on Nigerians, especially the youth, not to allow themselves to be used by the enemies of the country to destroy their country. This is because nothing good will come out of the protest but destruction.

This is because Nigeria has bigger challenges compared to us in Sudan because in Sudan majority of the citizens are Muslims and yet are killing themselves, what about Nigeria with tribal, religious, and ethnic differences? What do you think will happen if after the regime change? Do you think there will be somebody that can caution the youths against future protest?”

He further prayed for peace and harmony in Nigeria, with a call on the leadership to do the needful to end the economic hardship in the country.

Crime / Why We Disguise As Alfas, Pastors, Seek Spiritual Protection — Yahoo Boys by Kuginzi: 8:57pm On Jul 27
By Victor Ayeni

In a bid to evade strategies deployed by law enforcement agencies to end their illegal activities, fraudsters, commonly known as ‘Yahoo boys’, who primarily exploit digital cyberspace to defraud unsuspecting members of the public of their hard-earned money, now resort to various shady means, including seeking spiritual protection to hide their identities, Victor Ayeni writes.

The EFCC officials, acting on a tip-off about some suspected fraudsters residing in an estate in the Lugbe area, invaded their compound and in the process, caused a commotion that woke the 26-year-old, making his heart pound rapidly.

Confused and disoriented, Marcel peeked through his curtains, saw an EFCC van parked outside and heard the law enforcement officials moving into his neighbour’s apartment.

With a sense of urgency, the Imo State indigene picked up the phone he had been using for over two years to scam unsuspecting people and rushed to the restroom.

“My hands were shaking but my brain was working like a clock. An idea came into my head to wrap my phone in a nylon bag and that’s what I quickly did. A voice in my mind told me to hide the phone in the toilet tank, but another voice told me they would find it and I would be busted.

“I decided to dip the phone in the toilet bowl and shove it in the connecting pipe. That phone is what I used for ‘bombing and grinding’ and if EFCC finds it, I’m done,” Marcel confessed to Saturday PUNCH.

In Nigeria, Internet fraudsters, aka Yahoo boys or G-boys, are known to make a living by defrauding people online and offline.

Two of the slogans used by members of this criminal network are “bombing” which means finding a victim online and “grinding” which refers to chatting with a victim. These victims are often called “clients” or “magas.”

Before Marcel could fully comprehend what was happening to his neighbour – whom he claimed to be a G-boy – the door to his room was flung open with a force that sent it slamming against the wall.

Several EFCC officers stormed in, their flashlights sliced through the darkness that permeated Marcel’s room. One of the officers stepped forward, and with a stern expression, he said, “We are EFCC, stay where you are.”

As the young man sat there, frozen in a mixture of fear and bewilderment, the officers began their meticulous search. They rifled through his drawers, upended his mattress, and scattered his belongings across the floor.

“Show me your phone,” one of the officers shouted, his tone brooking no argument. Marcel told our correspondent that he denied having a phone as he had recently lost it.

He said, “I don’t think they believed my lie. One of them quickly pointed at my charger which was still plugged into an electric socket and told me ‘Is that not the charger to your phone? What are you charging with it?’

"As I tried to lie, I felt a slap across my face which made me see stars and planets. I started to cry, begging them that I was not a Yahoo boy and that I was just a shoemaker. I showed them the set of sandals I recently made, and they took it and flung it to a corner of the room. It was then I knew it was over for me.

"They started to rummage through my room, searched my drawers, and threw down all the boxes on top of my wardrobe. My room looked like a tornado had swept through it. Then one of them went into the restroom. From where I was seated, I could see him looking through the toilet tank and checking the toilet bowl but didn’t see my phone. Eventually, they all left my room.”

After an hour, when the EFCC enforcement officers had left, Marcel borrowed a phone from one of his neighbours and called his mother, Bridget, who resided in Lagos.

Bridget, a fervent member of a popular Pentecostal church is aware of her son’s involvement in Internet fraud. She had been functioning as a spiritual adviser who prayed for Marcel’s protection from the authorities.

Marcel added, “My mother was almost weeping on the phone. She thought I had been arrested because she had a dream earlier that month that EFCC arrested me and she warned me. She prays for me and I believe so much in her prayers. I believe it was what saved me from being arrested on that day.

"Most of the G-guys living in our flat and estate were arrested, they even arrested some innocent people. One teenage boy who came to stay temporarily with his aunt was one of those arrested. I’m very sure that if they had seen my phone, I would have been caught because it is my hustle pack.”

‘Nigerian princes’

In the early 2000s, a phrase known as ‘Yahoo boys’ was coined to describe young, financially driven persons who utilised Yahoo.com’s email accounts to execute phishing scams, also known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ or ‘419 fraud’ in the Nigerian slogan.

According to Infosecurity Magazine, Internet fraudsters are the original ‘Nigerian Princes,’ who have shifted in recent years to conduct elderly fraud, fake job scams, and romance scams.

Meta clampdown

In its Q1 2024 Adversarial Threat Report on Wednesday, Meta Platforms Incorporated, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced that it removed 63,000 accounts associated with the notorious ‘Yahoo boys’ scammers.

Politics / Nationwide Protest: Monitor Your Children’s Movement, APC Warns Parents by Kuginzi: 9:17pm On Jul 24
The All Progressives Congress, on Wednesday, called on parents to watch the movement of their children to prevent them from being recruited for violence ahead of the nationwide planned protest.

The warning comes in the wake of Tuesday’s threat by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, that security operatives wouldn’t hesitate to make arrests if the planned protest turns violent.

The protest, scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, has continued to generate tension and elicit mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Several groups who indicated interest in championing the campaign said the call for protest was provoked by the soaring cost of living and economic hardship in the country.

Addressing newsmen after its 153rd National Working Committee meeting, the National Secretary of APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, announced that the ruling party has joined the President to appeal to those planning protests to shelve their plans and have confidence that the Federal Government would address most of the economic challenges facing the nation.

Basiru also urged Nigerians to monitor the movement of their children to ensure they are not caught on the wrong arm of the law.

He said, “We noted that since coming on board in 2023, the government met quite several challenges, especially economic challenges, and Mr President is gradually implementing programmes and policies that would in the nearest future bring succour and relief to the citizens.

"The NWC noted that some issues highlighted by the protestants are political, while others are constitutional matters that can only be addressed through the amendment of the constitution, which is ongoing at the National Assembly.

"We, therefore, urge all those planning the protests to have confidence in Mr President’s unrelentless efforts at repositioning the economy, while assuring Nigerians that the challenges will sooner or later come to pass.

“The meeting urged parents and well-meaning Nigerians to monitor the movement of their children/wards so that they will not be used in causing chaos in the country.”

Continuing, the national secretary added that an emergency meeting of all Chairmen of the APC in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory has been called for ‘further discussions.’

Although he did not specify the date, PUNCH Online gathered that the state party leaders would meet with the leadership of the APC at the secretariat on Friday.

This was also confirmed by the National Deputy Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, in an exclusive phone call with our reporter.

Duru, however, confided that the protest was not the sole reason for the meeting.

Yes, the meeting is scheduled for Friday. That issue (protest), of course, and the State of the Nation,” he said.
