Politics › Tambuwal: No Politician With Conscience Will Join APC by Kuginzi(op): 7:28am On Feb 16, 2025 |
A former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has dismissed the wave of defections in the NorthWest, saying they are driven by personal gains rather than the interest of the people.
Speaking with journalists after the maiden Zonal Executive Council Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northwest in Kaduna on Saturday, Tambuwal criticized defectors who align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that their motives are not rooted in public service.
“People leave parties for different reasons. But what I have observed is that defections are not based on the interest of the people but on personal gains, what I call ‘stomach infrastructure.
“If you are a politician with a conscience, you wouldn’t join the APC given the current economic hardship and the poor performance of the Tinubu administration,” Tambuwal stated.
The PDP Chieftain lambasted the APC-led federal government, accusing it of lacking focus, compassion, and direction. He called on opposition forces to unite and strategize for the 2027 elections to provide an alternative for Nigerians.
"There is nothing appealing in the APC beyond personal benefits. Those of us who believe in this country and in service to the people must come together to ensure that by 2027, we remove this administration that has failed Nigerians,” he added. Meanwhile, the PDP Northwest reaffirmed its commitment to reclaiming power in 2027, emphasizing the need for unity and strategic mobilization.
A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and read by the PDP Northwest Chairman, Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, underscored the party’s resolve to take its place in national leadership.
The PDP of the Northwest zone should take its rightful position in the nation by providing quality leadership. All internal conflicts at the national level must be resolved swiftly because Nigerians are looking to PDP for leadership,” the communiqué stated.
Despite challenges from the 2023 general elections, the party reaffirmed its strong grassroots support and an increasing national shift toward the PDP, stressing that unity is key to achieving success in 2027.
“We call for unity among party members so that we can solve our problems and ensure victory in 2027. All hands must be on deck to take over leadership in our states and at the national level,” the communiqué added.
The high-profile meeting was attended by key PDP stalwarts, including former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi; former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau; PDP governorship candidate for Jigawa, Mustapha Sule Lamido; Senator Lado Dan Marke; Hon. Isa Ashiru Kudan; Hon. Ango Abdullahi; and the PDP National Youth Leader, among others. https://dailytrust.com/tambuwal-any-politician-with-conscience-wont-join-apc-because-of-tinubus-poor-performance/

Crime › I’ll Remain In Detention For Life Until Impartial Judge Takes Over My Case –kanu by Kuginzi(op): 5:59am On Feb 16, 2025 |
By Seun Opejobi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Saturday said he’s prepared to remain in detention all his life until a proper and impartial judge handles his matter. Kanu alleged a serial executive and judicial fraud being perpetrated against him since 2021 when he was extraordinarily renditioned. The IPOB leader claimed that his matter is deliberately being shielded from judges and justices who can deliver impartial judgments that may lead to the Federal Government losing in court. Kanu is currently facing trial before Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court on terrorism-related charges. He has been detained since 2021 when he was subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria. Since his return to Nigeria, the Appeal Court in Abuja had discharged and acquitted him of all charges against him. Despite the ruling, the Nigerian government has refused to grant Kanu freedom. Meanwhile, there has been some back and forth with Justice Nyako over the handling of his matter. In 2024, Kanu had challenged Nyako to step down from his trial because he lacked confidence in her judgment. Responding, the judge recused herself, but the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, insisted that she should continue with the matter. Last week, Justice Nyako adjourned the matter indefinitely. However, in an open letter he personally signed, Kanu said: “I have been compelled by the events of the past few days to take the unusual step of writing this Open Letter for the singular purpose of calling the attention of the general public to the serial executive and judicial fraud being perpetrated against me since my extraordinary rendition in 2021. The details are as follows: “In a judgment entered on 1st March 2017, the Federal High Court Abuja ruled that the ‘IPOB is not an unlawful group.’ At the time, it received widespread publicity which can be verified. This landmark ruling (made by the court before it turned unjust) emanated in a criminal proceeding that required ‘proof beyond reasonable doubt’ and in which the Federal Government and my humble self presented our respective cases. Alas! Instead of the Federal Government to go on appeal as the law mandated (if they are dissatisfied with the judgment), the former Attorney-General (Abubakar Malami) went behind closed doors with a letter signed by late Abba Kyari and got IPOB proscribed/tagged a terrorist group in an ex parte proceeding conducted without notice to me or to the IPOB. This abominable incident was the earliest sign yet that the government and its judiciary have struck an unholy and fraudulent alliance to deny me my rights and thereby imperil the lives and liberty of millions who identify with IPOB. “On 26th October 2022, a Federal High Court declared my extraordinary rendition and detention as unconstitutional, stating that: ‘the manner of arrest and detention of the Applicant (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) in Kenya, his continued detention in Abuja, his subjection to physical and mental trauma by the Respondents, the inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to the Applicant amounts to a brazen violation of the Applicant’s fundamental right to dignity of his person and threat to life under Section 34 (1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).’ The Court further ordered the Federal Government to apologize to me and pay me compensation. In a responsible and well-ordered society, run by a responsible government, this judgment is sufficient to have ended my lengthy detention and encouraged the Federal Government to constructively engage me on the issue of the self-determination agitation that triggered this whole saga. “Pedal back to 13th October 2022 when the Court of Appeal held that: ‘The Courts must never shy away from calling the executive to order when they resort to acts of “executive lawlessness.” The duty of the Courts is to maintain a balance between ensuring that law and order is obeyed and the protection of the individual from oppressive actions by the executive. By the forcible abduction and extraordinary rendition of the Appellant (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) from Kenya to this country on the 27th day of June 2021, in violation of international and state laws, the lower Court or indeed any Court in this country is divested of jurisdiction to entertain charges against the Appellant.’ “Despite the clarity of this judgment and its comportment with reason, the Federal Government refused to release me from detention while it went behind closed doors and connived with three other justices of the Court of Appeal who fraudulently and swiftly sat on appeal over the judgment and practically destroyed it by issuing what they termed ‘a stay of execution.’ One may then ask: Is it not abominable for a court to stay a judgment the government already disobeyed? In a plethora of cases, the Supreme Court has held that anybody who disobeys a related court order cannot be given any judicial relief until such order is obeyed. This is sound reasoning that applies to everybody but is fraudulently overlooked when it comes to my case. https://dailypost.ng/2025/02/15/ill-remain-in-detention-for-life-until-impartial-judge-takes-over-my-case-kanu/

Politics › North Divided Over Tinubu Re-election As Leaders Take Sides by Kuginzi(op): 5:41am On Feb 16, 2025 |
Ismaeel Uthman, Godwin Isenyo, Faith Maji and James Abraham Northern leaders have been divided over the possible re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Findings by Sunday PUNCH revealed that the once monolithic North is now split, with core northerners determined to oust Tinubu in 2027, while northern minorities support his re-election. Our correspondents noted that although core northerners complain about the President’s unfavourable disposition towards the region, minority groups argue that they have fared well under his administration. The Middle Belt, southern Kaduna residents, Hausa Christians of Northern Nigeria, and many natives of Plateau State have distanced themselves from the plot to unseat Tinubu. However, core northerners, represented by various political, socio-cultural, and indigenous groups, insist that Tinubu does not deserve a second term. The division among northern stakeholders is evident in social media exchanges between former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and a human rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani, who frequently express differing views on Tinubu’s approach to northern issues, particularly security. The Arewa Consultative Forum, a key political and cultural association in Northern Nigeria, alongside several prominent northern figures, said the region could not be coerced into re-electing Tinubu. Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, the Secretary General of the group, Murtala Aliyu, stated that the forum remained nonpartisan and would not support or oppose any candidate. The ACF was responding to a recent statement by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, who urged northern politicians with presidential ambitions to abandon their aspirations because Tinubu would serve for two terms. “What we normally do at ACF is to highlight critical issues that the people should consider when choosing a candidate, irrespective of their political party. We do not involve ourselves in promoting or antagonising any candidate,” Aliyu said. The League of Northern Democrats, a northern group comprising members of the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, vowed to support an alternative candidate in 2027. The spokesperson for the group, Ladan Salihu, said, “We don’t have a personal agenda against Tinubu, but we believe his government has not delivered. The performance indicators do not add up to justify northern support. “The government has not met expectations, and we in the North are not convinced he deserves another opportunity. Even those who voted for him are now filled with regret. His administration has brought hardship, poverty and agony to the people. "No northerner with a conscience can claim to be impressed with Tinubu’s performance. He may have the best intentions, but the system he is working with is flawed and unsustainable. It cannot deliver on the promises he made to the North.” Salihu also hinted at the possibility of a new political movement to field a northern candidate against Tinubu in 2027. “Yes, there is a possibility, because we are not convinced that this government can lift Nigeria out of its current predicament,” he said. Similarly, the National Coalition of Northern Groups warned that the North would not vote for Tinubu if economic conditions did not improve. In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the coalition president, Jamilu Charanchi, stated that the North, which holds the majority of votes, would not re-elect Tinubu if economic hardship persisted. "It is the people who will decide who leads the country—there is no doubt about that. The North has a majority. It is up to President Tinubu to make the right decisions so that people will re-elect him. If he continues on this path, I can tell you clearly that people will not vote for him,” he said. Urging Nigerians to vote wisely, Charanchi advised the electorate to choose leaders based on competence, capacity, integrity and adherence to the rule of law. He said, “Nigerians should not allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians. They should vote based on merit and mobilise others to elect leaders who will lift the country out of its current crisis.” Charanchi described Ganduje’s comment as troubling and disheartening, stating that it indicated the APC chairman was out of touch with reality. “Is he satisfied with Nigeria’s failing economy? Does he believe these failures are acceptable or justified?” he asked. A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, had previously hinted at northern efforts to remove Tinubu in 2027. Lawal recently declared his intention to work with El-Rufai to prevent Tinubu’s re-election. In an interview, Lawal blamed Tinubu’s economic policies for worsening poverty and hardship in Northern Nigeria. The North is seriously mobilising with a consensus that Bola Tinubu must step down in the 2027 election. There is no doubt about this consensus. “I may not have always agreed with El-Rufai, but on this issue, I will join him to stop Tinubu from winning the 2027 election. If Tinubu wins, northern Nigeria will turn into one large refugee camp,” he said. El-Rufai, on Monday, shared on his X handle an opinion by a chieftain of the party, Uche Diala, who warned that if Tinubu was not careful, he might face the same fate as former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 election. The article stated, “I have read and heard the arrogant posturing and braggadocio by some people who I refer to as political rabble-rousers, but I get more worried each day as it keeps looking more and more like a movie we had seen before. “May I remind some persons that, more than the performance or lack thereof of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, it was his attitude, and that of people around him, towards the North that ultimately brought him down and by extension the PDP that had boasted that it would rule Nigeria for 60 years.” https://punchng.com/north-divided-over-tinubu-re-election-as-leaders-take-sides/

Foreign Affairs › Monkey Triggers Nationwide Blackout In Sri Lanka by Kuginzi(op): 9:21pm On Feb 09, 2025 |
By Adam Mosadioluwa A monkey that intruded into an electrical grid substation triggered a nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka on Sunday According to government officials, the blackout which began at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time (0600 GMT), affected the entire island and had yet to be fully restored after three hours. “A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer causing an imbalance in the system,” Energy Minister, Kumara Jayakody told reporters. He stated that the incident occurred in a suburb of south Colombo. While electricity was restored in some areas, authorities could not immediately determine how long it would take to fully resolve the outage. “Engineers are attending to it to try and restore the service as soon as possible,” Jayakody added. The disruption comes as Sri Lanka continues to grapple with energy challenges. In the summer of 2022, the country suffered prolonged blackouts due to an economic crisis that led to fuel shortages. At the peak of the crisis, thermal power stations were forced to ration electricity for up to 13 hours a day. https://tribuneonlineng.com/monkey-triggers-nationwide-blackout-in-sri-lanka/

Politics › Ohanaeze Asks Tinubu To Give South-East More States by Kuginzi(op): 9:12pm On Feb 09, 2025 |
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on President Bola Ahamed Tinubu to exercise the needed political will and courage to address the historical state creation imbalance in the country.
The Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, who made the demand through a press statement issued on Sunday in Abakaliki with a title “A Call for Equity: Proposed 31 States Must Acknowledge Southern Needs” said there was the need to make up the states in the south to 19 to bring it to parity with states in the north.
According to him, the President and House of Representatives should be concerned about creating two states; one for the Southeast and the other for the South-south to bring to an end the intimidation against the aspirations of the Southern populace.
The Statement reads in part “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people and, by extension, the Southern regions of Nigeria, unequivocally voices its profound objections to the recent proposal put forth by the House of Representatives advocating for the creation of thirty-one new states. This proposal is an exercise in futility, characterized by a blatant lack of credibility and a fundamental misunderstanding of the criteria essential for the establishment of viable political entities.
“We commend the leadership of the House, particularly the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for his forthright dismissal of this proposal, which fails to meet basic constitutional requirements. His remarks serve not only as a necessary disclaimer but as a vital effort to preserve the integrity and dignity of our legislative institutions. The suggestion to create an unwieldy number of new states is, frankly, premature and displays a level of immaturity unbecoming of our representatives. Such proposals do nothing but cast a shadow over the stature of the House of Representatives and compromise its essential role in governance.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo staunchly reaffirms its position that any discourse regarding state creation must prioritize the Southern region of Nigeria, which has been historically underrepresented. The Northern region, currently endowed with nineteen states—a configuration established by past military regimes—benefits from an unfair numerical advantage that has led to systemic inequities. This disparity has long been employed as a strategic instrument of intimidation against the governance and development of the Southern populace.
“In this context, we urgently appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to summon the political will and moral strength necessary to correct this longstanding imbalance in state representation. The political and economic advantages enjoyed by the North, due in large part to its nineteen states, must be counterbalanced by the creation of two additional states in the South. Our immediate recommendation is that the first of these new states be established in the Southeast, which currently consists of just five states. It is imperative that the Southeast achieves parity with other geopolitical zones, particularly the Northwest, which boasts seven states.
“Moreover, we propose that the allocation of the second new state be judiciously considered for either the Southwest or the South-South region. This strategic adjustment is not merely a numeric correction; it represents a critical step toward addressing the long-standing grievances of the Southern populace and fostering a more equitable distribution of power across the federation.
“The imperative for action is now clearer than ever. By fostering this equity, President Tinubu will not only be advancing the cause of justice for the Southern regions but also dismantling the historical political and economic dominance that has marginalized our people for far too long. The establishment of these two states is essential for ensuring that the Southern regions are empowered to contribute significantly to the national dialogue and development agenda.
“In closing, Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains steadfast in its commitment to achieve fairness and equity for our people. We assert that the time has come for President Tinubu to take decisive action. The creation of two additional states within the Southern regions is not merely a policy recommendation; it is a clarion call for justice, equality, and national unity. A stronger, more equitable Nigeria is possible if we take the necessary steps to right the imbalances of the past”. https://tribuneonlineng.com/ohanaeze-begs-tinubu-to-give-south-east-more-states/

Politics › Stop Attacking Tinubu Over Subsidy Removal, Presidential Aide Tells Nigerians by Kuginzi(op): 9:17pm On Feb 08, 2025 |
By James Abraham The Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Constituency Affairs, Khadijat Omotayo, has urged Nigerians to stop attacking her principal over the removal of fuel subsidy. Omotayo made the call on Saturday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, during a town hall meeting attended by various stakeholders, including market women, youth groups, labour leaders, farmers, traditional rulers, government officials, and students, among others. According to Omotayo, the President is committed to implementing initiatives that will improve the lives of all Nigerians. She emphasized that the resources generated from the removal of the fuel subsidy have been shared among all states and that the President has also increased the salaries of workers, with promises of more increments during his tenure. Omotayo praised the President’s commitment to inclusivity, citing her own presence in Plateau State, a PDP stronghold, as evidence of his willingness to work with all Nigerians. The presidential aide also commended the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Muftwang, for his efforts in promoting democracy and inclusivity. She said, “I don’t expect us at this point to keep attacking Mr President, who wants dividends of democracy to go down the states. If Mr President is a partisan politician. He won’t let me come to Plateau State, as we all know it is a PDP state. But I’m here to represent him just because he wants to carry everybody along. When it was an election period, we fought for it and got it. After the election, we have to carry all the good people of Nigerians along. "Yes, Mr President has removed the subsidy, but the resources accruing from that removal have been shared with all states. On the issue of salary increment, when last has any president of the country increased the salary of workers? So, I think Mr President needs a little thank you from us. He has not spent one year in office, and he has increased the salaries of workers and he said this is not going to be the end of salary increments for workers during his tenure. "The students are talking about free education, and Mr President has initiated free loans for the students. All regions are benefitting from this loan. Tell a friend to tell a friend; tell a mother to tell a brother, tell a father to tell a brother. There is a free student loan without collateral. What do you want again? And Mr President has said you can repay the loan after two years of securing a job. You are not to pay the money from your pocket, but it will be deducted from your salary. "Please, go and apply for the student loan. It is something that we should be clamouring for, but Mr President has deemed it fit as something he should do, which he has done. Let’s encourage our youth to go for the student loan so that they can continue with their education” She added, “I was with the Deputy Governor of Plateau state yesterday, and I’m so happy with what I saw. We are truly in a world of democracy, and I’m proud of the sitting Governor. We are not running a partisan government. We are not running a religious -bigot government, but we are running an all-inclusive government. "Please, for God’s sake, let us work together to build a country that works for all of us. Be rest assured that whatever empowerment is going to the states through my office, we will all be carried along. Please, we need to be asking our representatives questions and not be attacking Mr President. He is rich enough to sit down in his house and say, I’m not contesting, but he wants to bring back the renewed hope to Nigerians, and that is why he said I want to do Emilokan.” The Special Assistant urged Nigerians to work together to build a country that works for all and to hold their representatives accountable rather than attacking the President. The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, thanked the President for allowing his aide to organise the town meeting which allowed the citizens to air their views. Mutfwang emphasised that his administration is committed to empowering every segment of the state and promoting the welfare of all citizens. “Mr President is doing a lot for us in Plateau, but like Oliver Twist, we are only asking for more. Like you said Emilokan, as Plateau state, it is our time for development, ” Mutfwang, who was represented by state Commissioner for Youths, Musa Ashoms, added. https://punchng.com/stop-attacking-tinubu-over-subsidy-removal-presidential-aide-tells-nigerians/ |
Crime › Government, Businessmen Back Anti-IPOB Vigilantes As SE Violence Escalates by Kuginzi(op): 7:14am On Feb 08, 2025 |
Following wanton killings and abductions of innocent residents in the South-East, some prominent businessmen in the region have begun moves to fight against hoodlums who have made life unbearable for residents and investors.
Findings by Saturday PUNCH showed that billions of naira had been raised by the groups, including those from Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State and its neighbouring Ihiala council area of Anambra State.
The businessmen, it was gathered, were funding various resistance groups in the form of vigilantes to tackle the rampant killings by hoodlums terrorising Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu states.
Also, in rural areas across the region, our correspondents learnt that wealthy businessmen were secretly funding militias to counter the insurgency in the South-East.
In the last one week, states in the region have come under intense attack by gunmen who have unleashed mayhem in Orlu, Okigwe, Oru West, Ihiala, among other areas.
The militant wing of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, known as the Eastern Security Network, has been accused of complicity in the continuous breach of security in the region.
Imo merchants raise N800m
Saturday PUNCH gathered that the Idinma Orsu Initiative, a community-led effort to combat insecurity in Imo State, raised over N800m in its ongoing fight against criminals linked to IPOB’s ESN.
The initiative, which began in 2023, has recorded notable successes, including the acquisition of 18 operational vehicles and collaboration with security forces to restore peace in the region.
The President of the Idinma Orsu Initiative, Chief Chuddy Okapaku, said the group’s journey began with a gathering in Owerri, Imo State, where members read out a communiqué and started raising funds.
“After we did this, these ESN members started panicking, burning houses, and looting goods. They felled many trees, hijacked trailers, and used them to block roads to cut off the authorities,” he said.
He explained that the turning point came when the kidnapping crisis became unbearable.
In response, the group met with the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who granted them an audience for about a month.
They then reportedly collaborated with officers of the Department of State Services, who deployed personnel in their local government.
"We started with one town. From there, we started fighting IPOB. We also got the military involved. We assist the military in providing AGO (diesel) and PMS (petrol). We also buy some food and service the vehicles. We have over 18 vehicles and have arranged our vigilantes,” Okapaku stated.
He noted that the group had been active for four years, with 2025 marking its fifth year of operations.
Vigilance groups in Ehime Mbano
Also, businessmen in Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State said they took it upon themselves to fund small vigilance groups to improve security in the area.
One of the vigilance groups in the area, funded by local merchants, is the Nsu Security Vigilance Group.
A community leader in the area, Chief Kelechi Anowi, told Saturday PUNCH that the vigilantes often escorted wealthy individuals to burials and other ceremonies to prevent attacks by criminals.
He noted that hiring vigilantes was cheaper than engaging the police.
The businessmen, who are among the wealthy people in the area, have continued to fund the Nsu Security Vigilance Group. They have also purchased patrol vehicles for the local security outfit. This is all targeted at countering moves by criminals.
"Some of the vigilance groups here in Ehime Mbano and other parts of Imo State escort these rich men to burials and other ceremonies just to protect them. The vigilantes are paid salaries every month. Millions of naira have been spent on vigilantes by these wealthy men since the rise of insecurity in the state and the South-East in general,” Anowi added.
South-East killing fields
The killings in the South-East have increased in the last few weeks.
On Sunday, suspected criminals invaded Amagu and two other villages in Nkalaha community, Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi State, killing no fewer than 10 residents and burning houses.
As of Wednesday, the death toll had risen to 15, with many more residents still missing.
Again, at least six church members, including a pastor of The Lord’s Chosen Church, Nkaleha, Ebonyi State, were killed by suspected hoodlums last Sunday.
Sources said the attackers also injured many worshippers during the attack.
Similarly, the lifeless body of Justice Azuka, the member representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, was found along the 2nd Niger Bridge in the early hours of Thursday.
Azuka was abducted on Christmas Eve along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, while returning home for the festivities.
However, his decomposing body was later discovered by a joint team of security operatives, raising further concerns over the spate of mindless killings in the South-East.
Earlier in January, a former National Human Rights Commission Chairman, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, who hails from Orsu, Imo State, posted on X that at least 18 people were killed in coordinated attacks across several communities in his hometown.
He listed the affected areas as Umukabia, Eziawa, Ihitte Nasa, Umuhu, Amaoku, and Amaebe, adding that the victims suffered machete wounds.
The President of the Idinma Orsu Initiative, Chief Chuddy Okparaku, told Saturday PUNCH how IPOB insurgents infiltrated the community in 2020.
He expressed shock at how the police, military, and other agencies ignored the situation until the militants relocated to Orsu Itokwa, taking advantage of the area’s rugged terrain.
He said, “What baffles me is that the police, military, and other agencies did nothing until they relocated to Orsu Itokwa. This is because that community has a long valley.
“There are several valleys in my community that are as low as 1,500 kilometres below sea level. Some are 800 kilometres deep. These terrorists hide in these valleys and plan how to carry out their wicked acts.”
Okparaku lamented the severe impact of IPOB’s activities, noting how their occupation of Orsu stripped the people of their freedom and peace.
Deserted communities
In Imo State, the worst-hit local government areas include Orsu, Orlu, and Okigwe, where communities have been deserted.
Others are Ideato North, where a council chairman, Chris Ohizu, was kidnapped and later beheaded.
Njaba, Onuimo, Oru West, and Oru East council areas have had a significant presence of IPOB and ESN activities. https://punchng.com/govt-bizmen-back-anti-ipob-vigilantes-as-seast-violence-escalates/

Politics › Tinubu Committed To Strengthening Democracy – Ganduje by Kuginzi(op): 3:44pm On Feb 01, 2025 |
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to strengthening democracy.
Ganduje also reassured Nigerians of Tinubu’s commitment to tackling the country’s challenges with determination and a clear sense of purpose.

Foreign Affairs › Us-Based Nigerians Go Into Hiding Amid Trump’s Deportation Crackdown by Kuginzi(op): 8:20am On Feb 01, 2025 |
Ismaeel Uthman, Gift Habib, Muhammed Lawal and Biodun Busari Nigerian illegal immigrants in the United States have disclosed that they have restricted their movements to public places to avoid being arrested and deported. This came as they expressed optimism that they would be protected against deportation by the many lawsuits filed against President Donald Trump over his immigration policies. Some of the illegal immigrants, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH, said they had refrained from going to work, church, and public places since Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States as a sacrifice to continue staying in the country. 3,690 Nigerians face deportation About 3,690 Nigerians in the United States are facing deportation, according to a document compiled by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Removal Operations. The document, titled, ‘Non-citizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship,’ shows that Mexico and El Salvador top the list of nations facing the highest number of deportations, with 252,044 and 203,822, respectively. As revealed in the document, 1,445,549 non-citizens were on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders as of November 24, 2024. On his inauguration day, Trump signed a series of executive orders aimed at toughening immigration policies, including the termination of birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants. The US Justice Department also threatened to prosecute local and state authorities that failed to comply with Trump’s immigration directives, which included a pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. Following the directive, 538 illegal immigrants were deported from the United States on January 23. We no longer go out – Nigerian immigrants Meanwhile, Trump’s Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, disclosed on her official X handle that the largest deportation operation in history was underway. Saturday PUNCH had earlier reported that Nigerians and other African illegal immigrants in the United States might be the next targets for deportation by the American government. However, our correspondents gathered that the affected Nigerians had devised means to avoid being deported, expressing fear that their forced return to Nigeria might spell doom for them. In separate interviews, the illegal immigrants, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being identified, stated that their difficult living conditions in the US were better than returning to Nigeria, citing reports of hardship and insecurity as their major concerns. One of the affected Nigerians, who resides in Tampa, Florida, said he had stopped going to work to avoid being arrested by ICE operatives. He said, “Ever since Trump came to power and acted on his threat of deportation, some of us have stopped going to work because ICE officers can raid workplaces to arrest illegal immigrants at any time.” Aside from that, the distressed Nigerian said he had also stopped going to church and other public places, disclosing that the only safe place for him was his house. “I work in a factory with many other Nigerians and Africans. Some other Africans who are also illegal immigrants have stopped going to work. The fear of Trump is the beginning of wisdom now. “I don’t go to church anymore because it is possible to be arrested there. For now, the only safe place is your house—stay indoors.” However, he expressed optimism that the deportation exercise would be relaxed after some months. “We survived Obama’s deportation actions; we will survive this one as well. We hope that the various lawsuits against the immigration policies will slow things down and eventually restrain Trump from carrying them out.” Asked why he had yet to regularise his documents, he said all efforts to validate his stay in the US had been futile. According to him, all the systems he tried to obtain valid residency papers didn’t work for him, lamenting that he had lost close to $30,000 in the process. He said, “I left Nigeria for the US in 2013, and I have been trying to get my papers since then. I was scammed through marriage and other means. In this regularisation process, I have lost close to $30,000. At a point, I wanted to file for asylum, but I was advised against it because I had spent over three years without valid papers. I decided to take under-the-table jobs instead.” Another Nigerian illegal immigrant in Columbus, Ohio said he stopped going to work for the first week after Trump’s inauguration due to fear of being deported. According to him, though Nigerians are not the primary targets of the mass deportation exercise, any foreign national staying in the US illegally can be arrested and deported by ICE operatives at any time. He explained that the first set of illegal immigrants being deported were those with criminal records, noting that the process of deporting others without criminal offences had also begun. “I cannot assume that Nigerians are not their target now and become exposed to them. No. The best self-defence is to stay out of trouble, and the best way to avoid being deported is to stay out of sight of ICE officers. “The truth is, Trump’s war on illegal immigrants has restricted our movements. People are mindful of where they go now. The situation is like a rat monitoring the presence of a cat before stepping out. Personally, I stopped going to work the first week Trump was inaugurated, and I have not been going to work regularly since. May we not be unfortunate. “Going back to Nigeria is not an option—not when millions of Nigerians are trying to japa because of hardship and insecurity. My difficult living conditions here are still better than what is considered ‘comfortable’ in Nigeria. However, we hope that this threat will subside in the next few months,” he said. Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, a Nigerian journalist in the US said many Africans in the country were anxious about Trump’s immigration policies. Trump to hit Canada, Mexico, China with tariff Trump to enforce tariff hikes on Canada, Mexico, China from Feb 1 “If they ask all of us to go back to our countries, we will have no choice but to leave. It is their country. If Nigeria were a better place, nobody would have left in the first place, and many of us would be ready to go back home. But unfortunately, our country has been plagued by bad leadership,” he stated. According to him, the deportation exercise is more welcomed in Republican-controlled states than in Democrat states. He confirmed that many Nigerians and other Africans had restricted their movements in various parts of the US to avoid being arrested and deported. “It is true that Nigerians are avoiding public places, including their workplaces and churches, but it is not in every state,” he stated. Also, a Nigerian Uber driver in New York, who identified himself only as Mathew, said some of his colleagues had been staying home and reducing their movements in the neighbourhoods. “A lot of my Nigerian colleagues are not coming out for now. They can’t just risk it. They are all afraid of deportation,” he said. Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, a Nigerian lawyer in the US disclosed that many Nigerian churches had instructed their members who are illegal immigrants to join online services. “Some people have gone underground. Nigerian churches are advising their congregations to worship online and not come to church if they are undocumented,” he said. 201 Nigerians in custody for deportation The Federal Government has, however, said a total of 201 Nigerians are currently in the custody of the US authorities and are ready for deportation. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the date and time of their deportation had not been communicated to the Federal Government. The acting spokesperson for the ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stated that for Nigerians to be deported, the established diplomatic practice was to officially communicate such intentions to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC. “The total number of 201 Nigerians are currently in their custody for deportation but the date and time for deportation have not been communicated. And there is no way they will be deported to Nigeria without communication with the embassy in Washington DC. “Moreso, if Nigerians are to be deported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission will all work together on how best to receive and reintegrate them into Nigerian society,” Ebienfa stated. “For instance, special flights will require necessary permits from Nigeria and we have to equally verify that the deportees are all Nigerians. “However, since no formal communication has been received regarding the deportation schedule, the Federal Government is monitoring the situation with keen interest, and the right thing will be done to give our citizens a sense of belonging.” Japa: Nigerians shun travel to US Meanwhile, Trump’s immigration policies have discouraged many Nigerians from traveling to the United States. Many people who were considering the US as a destination for higher education have reconsidered, leading to a reduction in the number of people applying for US visas. Speaking to Saturday PUNCH about the matter, the Chief Executive Officer of a travel consultancy firm, Cardinal E-School and Edu Services, Sulaimon Okewole, said Trump’s executive orders had negatively impacted travel activities to the US. He noted that prospective international students from Nigeria were exploring alternative destinations due to uncertainty and fear about studying in the US. Okewole stated, “Political stability is now a key consideration, alongside economic stability when choosing a study abroad destination. “The US is going to experience a decline in international student enrollment, and addressing these concerns is crucial to regaining its position as a premier destination for international students.” A representative of Renpha Consulting, another education consulting firm, Choice Ukpe, stated that obtaining a US visa was already difficult under normal circumstances. Ukpe added that the executive orders would make it even harder for Nigerians seeking opportunities in the country. She said, “It will be very difficult for Nigerians to study in the country now as they will tighten requirements and all. Schools in the US offer scholarships to encourage international students, but this still doesn’t guarantee a visa. “What we’re doing here now is finding alternatives for our clients. Just like when the United Kingdom introduced a policy on dependents, we looked for other options.” A student seeking admission to the US, Wale Dada, expressed sadness over the matter, stating that it was already affecting him. He added that he had been planning to start a Master’s degree programme in the US this year. Dada said, “With what I have heard about the orders, I do not think I will proceed with the preparations. I cannot afford to leave the country only to get there and be rejected or treated like a criminal. I believe this order will severely impact my plans and those of many people like me.” Another prospective international student, Abdulateef Oriyomi, noted that Trump’s executive orders had deterred his plans to study in the US. Oriyomi said, “I was already seeking admission and exploring various options, hoping to begin my academic journey at one of the prestigious institutions in the US. Unfortunately, with the recent policy, that aspiration now feels almost unattainable.” https://punchng.com/us-based-nigerians-go-into-hiding-amid-trumps-deportation-crackdown/

A Nigerian national, Okezie Ogbata, has been charged by a district court in Florida, United States, for defrauding more than 400 elderly and vulnerable victims of over $6m.
The Southern District of Florida, last Wednesday, found Ogbata guilty of operating a transnational inheritance fraud scheme to dupe American senior citizens.
According to the Department of Justice, the 36-year-old Nigerian and his co-conspirators told a series of lies to victims “to send money for delivery fees, taxes and other payments to avoid questioning from government authorities.”
Ogbata and his accomplices sent letters falsely claiming that the sender was a representative of a bank in Spain and that the recipient was entitled to receive a multimillion-dollar inheritance left for the recipient by a family member who had died overseas years before.”
In pleading guilty, Ogbata admitted to defrauding over $6m from more than 400 victims, many of whom were elderly or otherwise vulnerable.
Reacting to the case, the Head of the Justice Department’s Civil Division, General Brian Boynton, said, “This case is a testament to the critical role of international collaboration in tackling transnational crime.”
Ogbata is scheduled to be sentenced by US District Judge Roy Altman on April 14, 2025 with The Nigerian Achievers Awards Institute, with the possibility of a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. https://punchng.com/36-year-old-charged-with-defrauding-400-americans-in-us/

Politics › Hardship: FG To Gift 70 Million Nigerians N75,000 Each by Kuginzi(op): 9:35pm On Jan 19, 2025 |
In a bid to cushion the effects of hardship, the federal government has concluded arrangements to distribute N75,000 in cash to 70 million Nigerians. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Hon. Aliyu Audu, in a statement on Sunday, explained that the gesture aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s determination to address the growing poverty in the country. Audu, who is also the convener of the APC National Stakeholders Forum and APC Rebirth Movement, as well as a past APC Transition Committee member, stated in his 2025 New Year message to the party’s promoters that Tinubu has provided sufficient evidence of performance in just 19 months in office. Audu said that Tinubu’s bold policies have yielded tangible results at home and abroad, marked by a massive influx of foreign portfolio investments into the country. He also noted that debt obligations are being met to preserve Nigeria’s corporate integrity among nations. According to Audu, about 23 per cent of foreign reserves have surged into the country, amounting to $7.69 billion in one year (Year on Year) due to the effective monetary and fiscal policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government. He argued that while CBN’s benchmarked interest rate management incentivized foreign exchange inflows, the Federal Government’s improved activities in the non-oil sector and its boosted oil production have transformed fiscal earnings into its coffers. At the state and local government council levels, Audu noted that significant federation allocations are being received, with some boasting triple increases, enabling improved payments to local contractors while food prices are falling as farmers now have better access to their farms, thanks to increased security by the armed forces. He added that the President’s bold economic policies continue to garner praise, with food surpluses expected soon following the delivery of 255 tractors to mechanise and transform agriculture. These tractors are being distributed to farmers. Audu also applauded the government for the repatriation of $52.88 million of looted funds from the United States, stating that it is important for APC promoters to engage more Nigerians this year and market Tinubu’s people-oriented policies ahead of May 29, 2025, as he approaches two years in office. "The negative rhetoric and antics of opposition politicians misinforming Nigerians about the true state of things are fast evaporating. Nigeria is working by optics. Available credible data shows that President Tinubu’s government is hitting amazing targets, with the World Bank projecting a 3.5 per cent GDP growth for Nigeria’s economy in 2025 and a slight rise to 3.7 per cent in 2026,” he said. “As Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria’s oil sector saw a significant increase, rising by 6.3 per cent in December 2024 to reach 1.507 million barrels per day, according to the just-released January 2025 Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR). This means the government is hitting higher oil production targets after years of fluctuation. “It’s a good omen at a time when the Nigeria Customs Service generated N6.105 trillion in 2024, surpassing its revenue collection target by 20.2 per cent. It’s our duty as APC image enhancers to spread these facts in the public space and counter the naysayers and their toxic false narratives. "This 2025 is crucial in our strategic communication engagement with Nigerians. We must let people know how the President is working. Right now, President Tinubu’s leadership is increasingly sought after in the West African region as ECOWAS chairman and around the world. He was the toast of the day in Ghana as the special guest of honour at President Mahama’s inauguration recently. "Just days ago, President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) promised to visit Nigeria soon following our president’s request, the first such visit in UAE history. Dubai, in particular, is a preferred home for many Nigerians after the UK. "Nigeria has indeed gained much in the last 19 months under the Bola Tinubu presidency. He has given us sufficient tools to market his achievements within such a short time.” https://guardian.ng/news/hardship-fg-to-gift-70-million-nigerians-n75000-each/

Politics › I Declined Rituals In My Governorship Bid, Says Diri by Kuginzi(op): 10:02pm On Jan 18, 2025 |
By Samuel Ese Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has revealed how his absolute faith in God earned him the sobriquet ‘miracle governor’ According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Saturday, the governor stated this on Friday during the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area Annual Day of Thanksgiving held in the Sampou area of the state. Diri disclosed how, in 2020, a senior citizen of Nigeria invited him to Abuja and advised him to perform certain rituals if he wanted to be governor, but he turned down the offer. He said that at that time, he had challenged the All Progressives Congress candidate’s declaration as the winner of the November 2019 governorship election, and the matter was then pending at the Supreme Court. Diri told the crowd at the gathering that the senior citizen flew in some marabouts from Senegal to perform the rituals, and when he bluntly rejected the offer, he said the man demanded a refund of the money spent to transport them into the country, and he had to pay him the sum of $10,000. He explained that his unshaken faith in God made him decline the advice to look elsewhere for help, saying God, against all the odds, proved that He is always faithful and stressed the need for politicians to learn from his experience and put their trust in God rather than in man. The governor stated that the KOLGA people have reasons to be thankful to God, given the level of development they have witnessed, and thanked the council for giving Thanksgiving Day legal backing through legislation. Governor Diri also expressed gratitude to Apostle David Aggrey, head of the Royal House of Grace Church, the convener, and those who have sustained the programme. His words: “I thank God and also thank Apostle David Zilly Aggrey because he started this event. And because his prayers were heard, God made it possible to bring me in, and today, it is by law that all Kolokuma/Opokuma people can gather to praise God. “Let me reveal to you why it is important to thank God and have faith in Him. Sometimes ago, a senior citizen of this country invited me to Abuja and asked me to perform certain sacrifices, but I declined. I told him my faith in God would not allow me to do it. He got angry and told me I would never become governor. "He told me that he had spent $10,000 to bring the people for the sacrifice and asked for a refund, which I obliged. When the Supreme Court’s pronouncement came, the man was shocked and could not call me. Sadly, he passed on after some time. The story I have narrated was witnessed by my deputy and a friend in Abuja as both of them accompanied me to visit the senior citizen. “Kolokuma/Opokuma people have every reason to thank God. As a state, we do not want anybody to be harmed in the name of politics because we do not know who God has destined for greatness. So I call on all of us in the political game to be very civil and recognise that there is God who rules in the affairs of man.” In his welcome address, the chairman of Kolokuma/ Opokuma Local Government Area, Tariye Lelei, said people of the area have reason to thank God for the gift of a governor. Lelei said it was in recognition of the goodness of God in their lives that the local government passed legislation legalising the thanksgiving on January 17 annually. In his sermon, Apostle David Aggrey said the younger generation might not understand the reason for the thanksgiving as they did not experience the difficulty older ones in the local government area faced and said if they do not thank God for what He had done for them, they could be regarded as ingrates. Aggrey said Bayelsa was witnessing tremendous development under Diri and thanked the people of the state for giving him the opportunity to serve a second term. https://punchng.com/i-declined-rituals-in-my-governorship-bid-says-diri/

Crime › Nasarawa Court Remands Gospel Singer Caught With Corps Member’s Severed Head by Kuginzi(op): 9:31pm On Jan 17, 2025 |
By Johnson Idowu A Nasarawa State High Court has ordered the remand of an acclaimed gospel singer, Timilehin Ajayi, who was caught with the severed head of a National Youth Service Corps member, Salome Adaidu. The remand was contained in a short statement posted on the X page of the Nasarawa State Police Command on Friday. According to the statement, the suspect was arraigned pending his formal arraignment. The statement read, “Timilehin Ajayi was charged to court today and remanded in prison custody pending his formal arraignment.” PUNCH Online reported on Tuesday that Ajayi was arrested by churchgoers for allegedly killing and dismembering Adaidu, for suspected ritual purposes. The church’s Bible Study Teacher and General Secretary, Caleb Umaru, had explained that a member noticed Ajayi acting suspiciously near a river. He claimed that the said member alerted others when Ajayi threw a bag into the river, which was later retrieved and found to contain his girlfriend’s severed head. The suspect, who had admitted to committing the crime, however, said he had no regret for his action. He had alleged that the late Adaidu, who was his girlfriend, was cheating on him which prompted him to kill her. Meanwhile, members of the deceased family had claimed that their sister was never in a relationship with the suspect and that contrary to reports that Adaidu had visited the suspect, she was allegedly kidnapped. https://punchng.com/nasarawa-court-remands-gospel-singer-caught-with-corps-members-severed-head/

Politics › 2027: Anti-Apc Alliance Seeks Obasanjo, Gowon, Other VIPS’ Backing by Kuginzi(op): 7:41am On Jan 12, 2025*. Modified: 8:16am On Jan 12, 2025 |
ISMAEEL UTHMAN, ADEBAYO FOLORUNSHO-FRANCIS and ABDULRAHMAN ZAKARIYAU A former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, is leading the northern elite to woo southern bigwigs for an alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, Sunday PUNCH reports. Sources said former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, are among supporters of the group. Our correspondents gathered that Shekarau, a leader of the League of Northern Democrats, had been discussing coalitions with political leaders in the South-West, South-East, and South-South. The Convener of the LND, Dr Umar Ardo, had on January 5, declared the group’s readiness to transform into a political party, citing the need to create a unified and credible national political platform. According to Ardo, the LND plans to transform into the League of National Democrats to provide Nigerians with a viable alternative for leadership and governance. “This new political platform seeks to provide a credible alternative by institutionalising meritocracy, promoting accountability, and ensuring the emergence of leaders with proven competence and integrity,” Ardo stated. Sunday PUNCH gathered that Obasanjo and Gowon advised the group’s leaders to make it a national platform and incorporate southern politicians. Obasanjo had late October 2024 urged the LND to consider changing its name to the National League of Democrats because the ideals the group espoused should cut across the nation. The former president, who received the 20-member delegation of the LND led by Shekarau at his penthouse, inside Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, said he would not mind being the group’s patron. "It is high time we began working for the national interest. Yes, you have identified your group as the League of Northern Democrats, but how I wish you call your group National League of Democrats, because where you come from should not be a problem,” he stated. Umar Sani, a former spokesperson for ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, who is a pioneer member of the LND, told Sunday PUNCH that both Obasanjo and Gowon were among the backers of the group. Sani confirmed that Shekarau was leading discussions with prominent southern politicians. He said, “We’re talking with some southern politicians, but I don’t know who they are. Shekarau and others are making the moves and doing the talking. “But when we met Baba Obasanjo, he said the initiative should be made national. General Gowon also said it should be national, and other influential Nigerians gave similar advice. When we engaged politicians in the South-East, South-South, and South-West, they began suggesting that this movement be turned into a political party. While we were briefed in meetings, the leaders didn’t disclose the names of the southern politicians they were speaking to.” Sani clarified that the LND had not yet been registered as a political party, as consultations were still ongoing. The spokesperson for the group, Dr Ladan Salihu, said discussions were ongoing with southern leaders, including former governors, senators, and ministers. https://punchng.com/2027-anti-apc-alliance-seeks-obasanjo-gowon-other-vips-backing/

Politics › Edun: Tinubu’s Reforms Save Nigeria ₦930 Billion, Drive Economic Recovery by Kuginzi(op): 9:02pm On Jan 11, 2025 |
The economic reforms of the Tinubu administration, including the market-based pricing of premium motor spirit (PMS) and adjustments to foreign exchange policies, have saved the country approximately N930 billion in previously lost revenue, according to Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun.
The N930 billion represents about five per cent of revenue losses addressed through these measures.
Edun told the Senate Committee on Appropriations during a briefing on the 2025 Appropriation Bill on Thursday that the administration inherited a precarious economy but has implemented targeted reforms that have now placed the country on a recovery trajectory.
"The administration inherited an economy on the brink, but through targeted reforms, we are now on a recovery path,” he said.
He cited the 100 per cent implementation of the 2024 recurrent expenditure as proof of government’s ability to meet its obligations despite the challenging economic environment.
Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, he said, exceeded three per cent last year; a figure he described as a milestone, particularly when compared to developed nations struggling to achieve one per cent growth.
Gross Domestic Product is the monetary value of all finished goods and services made within a country during a specific period.
Edun said the administration’s focus “remains on growing revenues, improving fiscal discipline and ensuring sustainable economic growth for all Nigerians.”
Enhanced performances by revenue-generating agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, he added, were driving consistent revenue growth critical for achieving the government’s development goals.
Edun explained that the 2025 budget is planned to build on the successes of the previous year, prioritising increased tax-to-GDP ratios and higher national revenues.
He spoke of President Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining fiscal stability, meeting debt obligations, and implementing reforms that foster inclusive growth.
Ministry of Industry, Trade, Investment targets N2.4trn IGR for 2025.
Industry, Trade and Investment Minister, Jumoke Oduwole, who took her turn yesterday to brief the Senate committee, said N2.4 trillion has been projected as its internally generated revenue (IGR) for the 2025 fiscal year.
But she described the sum of N3.844 billion allocated for capital expenditure in the Ministry’s 2025 budget as inadequate to fund its programmes and plans aimed at driving the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu Administration.
She appealed for the support of the lawmakers for additional funding to enable the Ministry align its projects according to the objectives spelt out in the National Development Plan and the Medium Term Expenditure Framework.
Oduwole said her ministry remained committed to achieving its vision of promoting economic growth, creating jobs and generating wealth as well as formulating and implementing policies and programmes that attract foreign direct investment, boost industrialisation, increase trade and export as well as encourage the development of enterprises.
The ministry is currently implementing strategic policies, plans and programmes targeted at economic recovery and growth for employment generation and wealth creation for the generality of Nigerians, she said.
She named some of the programmes and policies of the Federal Government being promoted as the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan, the National Enterprise Development Programme, the Trade Policy of Nigeria (2023-2027) and the Nigeria investment Policy (2023-2027). https://thenationonlineng.net/edun-tinubus-refoms-save-nigeria-n930b-drive-economic-recovery/amp/

Politics › Why Peter Obi Never Mentions Kidnappings In Southeast – Omokri by Kuginzi(op): 5:32pm On Jan 11, 2025 |
Social commentator, Reno Omokri has accused former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi of speaking only about insecurity in the North and Southwest but neglecting the Southeast.
Omokri said this in a post on his official X account.
He mentioned that the southeast has the highest number of kidnapping for ransom in 2024 but a study of Peter Obi’s posts on kidnapping, abduction shows that his posts were directed at the North, Southwest and South South.
Omokri wrote, “The Southeast had the highest incidents of kidnapping for ransom in Nigeria for the year 2024, according to data from the analytical firm SMB Morgen. According to the statistics, Anambra is the state most prone to such abductions, followed by Imo, Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi.
“But the strange thing is that a study of posts made by Peter Obi on the subject of kidnapping, abductions, and ransom payments for the year 2024 found that most of his posts were directed at the North, the Southwest, and the South-South, respectively, in that order.
The Southeast, which had by far the highest percentage of abductions for ransom, featured the least in Mr. Obi’s condemnatory posts about the issue.
"This is surprising given the data from SMB Morgen. Peter Obi attacks other regions and ethnicities for a malaise that is more prevalent in his own region and particularly his home state. Why is that?
“When it happens in the North or Southwest, Peter Obi will dance naked in public. But if it occurs in Igboland, Mr. Obi will chop and clean mouth. He will usually not comment until he has been called out. And even in the rare event he addresses abductions in the Southeast, his words are tame, compared to the hyperbolic and hostile words he uses when they occur outside his home region.
"Can such a person govern a multiethnic and religiously heterogeneous nation like Nigeria fairly and objectively? You be the judge!” https://thenationonlineng.net/why-peter-obi-never-mentions-kidnappings-in-southeast-omokri/amp/

Politics › INEC Rejects ₦40 Billion Allocation In 2025 Budget, Proposes ₦126 Billion by Kuginzi(op): 3:39pm On Jan 11, 2025 |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the N40 billion earmarked for it in the 2025 budget.
Chairman of the Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, rejected the estimate during budget defence before a joint committee session on INEC and Electoral Matters, at the National Assembly on Friday. The INEC chairman in his presentation before the joint committee chaired by Senator Sarafadeen Alli (APC, Oyo South), said elections in Nigeria have become huge burden requiring adequate funding.
He said, “Our proposal for the 2025 budget, the provision requires the sum of over N126 billion. We have the document that has provided details line by line on how we intended to spend the N126 billion.
"We would like the support of the National to enable us to achieve our responsibilities in the first line charge and most of these responsibilities are constitutional. “In a nutshell, the N40 billion budget envelope given us for 2025 will not cover 1/3 of projected expenses which totally amounts to over N126 billion.
"We would like the support of the National to enable us to achieve our responsibilities in the first line charge and most of these responsibilities are constitutional.
"In a nutshell, the N40 billion budget envelope given us for 2025 will not cover 1/3 of projected expenses which totally amounts to over N126 billion “Aside the off-cycle elections for 21 constituencies to be filled through bye – elections and the Anambra governorship election this year, personnel cost alone on account of the new minimum wage will eat up the N40 billion budgetary envelope.”
He added that the inadequacy of budget made the electoral body to get intervention funds of N10.5 billion for Edo and Ondo elections in 2024 and another N500 million for bye -elections on affected constituencies in 2024.
In their response, members of the joint committee one after the other, assured the electoral body that the proposed sum would be appropriated in the budget for the 2025 fiscal year. https://dailytrust.com/inec-rejects-n40bn-allocation-in-2025-budget-proposes-n126bn/

Crime › Re: US Returns $50 Million In Alleged Stolen Funds by Alison-Madueke To Nigeria by Kuginzi: 10:26am On Jan 11, 2025 |
sunky97: In a significant move to combat corruption and support public services, the United States has returned nearly $53 million in alleged illicit funds to Nigeria. The recovered money, linked to Nigeria's former oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke and others, will be used to fund critical projects aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
The funds, which were repatriated from the US, are part of a broader effort to recover assets allegedly stolen by Alison-Madueke during her tenure as Nigeria's petroleum resources minister. US authorities claim that she enriched herself and others by awarding lucrative contracts in exchange for bribes while leading Nigeria's state oil firm. These alleged ill-gotten gains were reportedly used to purchase a 65-meter superyacht named Galactica Star, as well as multiple luxury properties in California and New York.
Alison-Madueke, 64, has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing. However, her alleged corrupt activities have drawn international scrutiny. In the UK, she faces bribery charges, including accusations of accepting luxury goods, paying private school fees, and receiving at least $127,000 in cash.
A prominent figure in the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Alison-Madueke made history as the first female president of OPEC, the oil exporters' group. She served as Nigeria's petroleum resources minister from 2010 to 2015, following previous roles as transport minister and minister for solid minerals and steel development.
The repatriation of the $52.88 million marks a milestone in the ongoing efforts to recover assets linked to Alison-Madueke. This is the first time funds tied to her alleged corruption have been returned to Nigeria from outside the West African nation.
At a formal signing ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria's Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, highlighted the importance of this development in the fight against corruption. He announced that $50 million of the recovered funds would be channeled through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2.88 million would be allocated to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and bolster anti-corruption initiatives.
US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the use of the returned funds. "The ministry of justice must guarantee that these funds are used transparently and effectively to improve the lives of Nigerians," he stated. https://aidiscoveries.io/us-returns-50-million-in-alleged-stolen-funds-to-nigeria/ Corruption has become a deeply entrenched problem in Nigeria, permeating every aspect of society and hindering economic growth and development. Despite efforts to tackle this issue, it continues to eat away at the very fabric of the nation. In this article, we will explore the causes and consequences of corruption in Nigeria, as well as the ongoing efforts to combat it. |
Politics › Tinubu Calls For Increase In China-Nigeria Currency Swap by Kuginzi(op): 5:42am On Jan 10, 2025 |
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday urged the government of the People’s Republic of China to increase the $2 billion currency swap between Nigeria and China to enhance trade between the two countries.
He also called for an upward review of the $50 billion aid package for Africa, which China’s President Xi Jinping announced last year.
China and Nigeria recently renewed their currency swap agreement, valued at 15 billion yuan (approximately $2 billion), to enhance trade and investment.
Receiving the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi, at the State House Abuja, the President said increasing the level of currency swaps will speed up the infrastructural development in Nigeria and deepen the strategic bilateral relations.
"We still demand more in the area of currency swap. The level you have approved as a government for Nigeria is inadequate considering our programme. If you can increase that, it will be well appreciated. Our bond should grow stronger and become unbreakable,” the President was quoted to have said in a statement signed by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
Regarding the 50 billion dollars pledged by the Chinese Government to support Africa, President Tinubu noted that the continent’s infrastructural needs would require more commitment, urging a review of the amount to reflect the continent’s reality.
“I am happy you are part of China’s highest decision-making body. We will want you to use your position to influence improved project funding. First, I say yes to the 50 billion dollar support, and thank you for contributing to African growth.
"The infrastructural needs of Africa are greater than that, and we want to move as rapidly as our other counterparts. All share your vision of rapid development. Africa values the relationship with China, and we seek deeper collaboration for infrastructural development,” he stated.
Tinubu called on China to support Nigeria’s bid for a permanent United Nations Security Council seat.
“You are a member of the UN Security Council. We want you to use your influence to ensure Nigeria secures the seat,” the President said.
The Nigerian leader thanked President Xi Jinping for his warm reception during his visit to China last year.
He said Africa, particularly Nigeria, was prepared to meet developmental goals and contribute counterpart project funding.
"We are ready to move and reach the various developmental goals. Due to our deliberation, we signed many MOUs and planned many action programmes.
“My visit during FOCAC was a good experience. We signed several comprehensive MOUs during the visit. We planned several programmes of action. As a result of that deliberation, I made sure that immediately after I returned, I appointed one of the best brains available to coordinate Nigeria-China relations, Mr Joseph Tegbe. He will work to actualise various MOUs and promote a greater understanding of developmental programmes.
It is good that you came at such a critical time. My visit to China was a good experience. Once again, accept my sympathy for the earthquake in Tibet. It was a natural disaster that nobody expected. We commend your government for the rapid reaction to protect lives.
Yi thanked President Tinubu for appointing a Director General and Global Liaison, Nigeria—China Strategic Partnership, to oversee the implementation of the MOUs for the rapid development of the Nigerian economy.
"I would like to thank Nigeria for abiding by the one-China principle, and we will continue to support Nigeria in achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda, countering terrorism and ensuring regional security,” he said.
Yi said Chinese investments in the country would focus on employment generation and infrastructural development. He said the Chinese National Development Bank had started funding some development projects.
He said the Chinese Government would support including an African country in the UN Security Council, adding that “it was a historical injustice by the world that should be corrected”.
“We stand with Africa, and we will not support a country that invades another country,” he stated.
The foreign minister said China would welcome Nigeria’s membership in the BRICS and participation in the global development mechanism.
He said China fully supported Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), for a second term in office.
The minister lauded President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and consistency in projecting Africa’s needs, which require China’s support.
“You brought Renewed Hope to the people of Nigeria. Your economy has sustained sound momentum, and Nigeria’s global influence has steadily increased. Nigeria has played an important role in upholding regional peace and has become an important force for African stability.
“We congratulate Nigeria on its achievements and believe that, under your leadership, Nigeria will realise greater achievements,” the Chinese foreign minister stated. https://www.channelstv.com/2025/01/09/tinubu-calls-for-increase-in-china-nigeria-currency-swap/

Politics › I Rose From Almajiri To Become NNPCL Boss, Says Mele Kyari by Kuginzi(op): 5:46am On Jan 09, 2025 |
The man sitting at the top of Africa’s leading oil firm – the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) – was an Almajiri as a boy. Mele Kolo Kyari made this revelation in a tweet on his X handle yesterday to mark his 60th birthday. The Almajiri is a system of Islamic education practised in northern Nigeria. It encourages guardians to cede parental responsibilities to Islamic schools. Many Almajiri children roam the streets of many Northern cities and towns. Kyari said: “Allah, by his grace, spared my life to this exceptional day, making it my 60th year from birth, even much earlier on the Hijra calendar. “I am profoundly grateful to my country for giving me the opportunity to grow from an Almajiri (Tsangaya) school pupil to become the CEO of Africa’s largest energy company. “My deep appreciation to my family, friends and associates, my colleagues at work and my teachers (western and of Almajiri extractions) and many unmentioned people who account for many of my accomplishments, unconditional support and my overall wellbeing.” Kyari, however, did not give further information on his Almajiri background. He started post-primary education in 1977 at the Government Community Secondary School Biu, Borno State. He completed his secondary school in 1982 and attended the University of Maiduguri where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Geology and Earth Science in 1987. He joined the then-NNPC in 1991. In his tweet, Kyari expressed gratitude to Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving him the opportunity as chief executive of the oil giant. “Even more particular, I deeply appreciate the exceptional privilege given to me by Presidents Buhari and Tinubu to serve as the last GMD of the NNPC and the pioneer CEO of the NNPC Limited. “Reflecting backwards alone can’t account for the profoundly eventful life I spent to this date, walking through good and bad times, travails and triumphs, pains and happiness, fails and successes and many more that only the sufficiency of Allah will explain. "At this milestone, I feel the obligation to serve with even greater conviction and with elevated expectation of eternal recompense so deeply pleasing. “I am hugely indebted to my family for being nearly absent for most of my later years serving our nation and the common good.” Buhari appointed Kyari as NNPC GMD on June 20, 2019. He officially assumed the role in July of the same year. On July 19, 2022, at the transformation of NNPC to NNPCL, Kyari assumed office as Group Chief Executive Officer of the Limited Liability Company. The Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo) hailed Kyari on his 60th birthday. Tompolo’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo. The former Niger Delta freedom fighter, while noting that Kyari had “remarkably transformed NNPCL to the acknowledgement and admiration of the doubting Thomases,” expressed renewed commitment to building on the achievements made in Nigeria’s increased crude oil production. The Ibe-Ebidouwei of the Ijaw nation commended the NNPCL GCEO for his patriotic and nationalistic zeal. He said: “Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, in sustained strides, has succeeded in putting Nigeria on the path of sustainable growth and development in tandem with the development blueprints and economic recovery plans of President Tinubu, as carefully enunciated in the Renewed Hope Agenda.” Recalling that the defunct NNPC was comatose before Kyari came to its rescue, Tompolo emphasised that the success stories recorded by the company under his supervision had received widespread accolades from all relevant stakeholders. Tompolo commended Mallam Kyari for ensuring that two of the nation’s refineries, the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company and the Port-Harcourt Refining and Petrochemical Company, were revamped. He said: “This has led to the unlocking of a total refining capacity of 117,000 barrels per day (bpd) with the operational take-off of both the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries in November and December 2024, respectively. “The Port Harcourt refinery, which resumed production on November 26, 2024, after extensive rehabilitation, currently operates at 70 per cent, thus accounting for 42,000 barrels per day capacity, while the Warri refinery restarted operations on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 60 per cent capacity, translating to 75,000 barrels per day. “This revival is expected to enhance Nigeria’s energy security and reduce reliance on imported refined products, marking a significant step in the country’s refining sector transformation”. Similarly, Tompolo, whose company, TSSNL, is a major actor in the war against crude oil theft and other sharp practices associated with petroleum products in the Niger Delta, appreciated Kyari’s commitment and encouragement in the battle to save the nation’s economic mainstay from saboteurs. https://thenationonlineng.net/i-rose-from-almajiri-to-become-nnpcl-boss-says-mele-kyari/amp/

Crime › Ohanaeze: I’m Ready To Exchange My Freedom For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release – Omenazu by Kuginzi(op): 5:33am On Jan 09, 2025 |
By Seun Opejobi The newly elected factional President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Jackson Omenazu has vowed to stop at nothing in order to secure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom.
Omenazu said the restoration of peace in Igbo land rests upon Kanu’s release.
In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, Omenazu said “I stand resolutely prepared to exchange my freedom, my liberty, and, if need be, my very life, in pursuit of the release of our brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
He stressed that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization of over 80 million Igbos across the globe, was unwavering in its conviction to explore every conceivable avenue to secure Kanu’s liberty.
“We recognize the historical precedents set by the Yoruba leadership exemplified in the release of Sunday Igboho, where steadfast solidarity and bold diplomacy carved pathways to justice.
“It is incumbent upon us, as guardians of our cultural heritage, to adopt a similar resolute approach, employing innovative and discreet tactics rather than the ineffective, superficial measures that have characterized our past engagements.
“In pursuit of this noble cause, Ohanaeze Ndigbo will embark on a strategic collaboration with all religious organizations active within Igbo land, be they Christian, Muslim, traditional, or Jewish.
“We shall consecrate the last weekends of each month throughout 2025 as sacred times for prayer, supplication, and ordinances.
“We will earnestly seek the countenance of Chukwu Okike Abiama (God Almighty) imploring divine intervention in the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, other prisoners of conscience in the country for restoration of peace throughout our homeland.
"As the leader entrusted with the voice of our people, I vow with utmost commitment to this cause.
In the spirit of true leadership, which is defined not by titles but by sacrifices made for the collective good for all humanity.
“I declare: I am prepared to sacrifice my personal liberty and comfort for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This is not just an aspiration; it is an oath I solemnly take as I assume my role as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide,” he noted.
The Ohanaeze President urged President Tinubu to listen to the cries of the Igbo people, just as he offered himself as a guarantor “for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s cooperation post-release, ready to ensure that his return catalyzes healing and reconciliation rather than discord.”
“We must not allow fear to hinder our collective responsibility—a fear that unfounded in all political calculations because the stability of the Nigeria government will not be destabilized for single action based justice in this instance.
“The challenge before us is profound, yet it is not insurmountable.
“The advocacy for Kanu’s freedom only serves to underscore the need for a unified front.
“This sacrifices must be counted as steps toward justice—let us not shy away from this noble endeavor.
“I call upon every Igbo individual, every leader, and every citizen of goodwill to rally together in this quest for justice.
“Let us remember the sacrifices of our forebears who fought valiantly for our rights and freedoms,” he further stated. https://dailypost.ng/2025/01/08/ohanaeze-im-ready-to-exchange-my-freedom-for-nnamdi-kanus-release-omenazu/

Politics › FG ₦9 Billion E-Border Project Fails To Stop Bandits, Illegal Aliens by Kuginzi(op): 5:12am On Jan 09, 2025 |
Despite the Federal Government’s multi-billion-naira border surveillance systems launched in 2019, illegal migrants, some of whom have been identified as bandits, terrorists and kidnappers, continue to cross into Nigeria from the Republics of Benin, Chad, Niger, Mali and Cameroon.
This is as the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said e-border surveillance is now being mounted across the nation’s borders with its neighbouring countries.
“As we speak, more than half of our borders have been automated. There are visuals, and a lot of processes going on now. So, effectively, there is e-border surveillance now in our borders.
"By October (2024), we will be done with the first phase of the e-border surveillance project, including our marine borders. Now, we have the command and control for air and land. You cannot secure your borders effectively without technology,” Tunji-Ojo said in a live national television programme in May 2024.
At the launch of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex in early December 2024, the minister said about 250 trained Immigration Service personnel run 24-hour shifts at the e-border control centre.
However, some foreigners still crossed to Nigeria from the Republic of Benin through the Baruten/Kaiama border posts despite the closure of the border by the FG.
Checks by The PUNCH from residents of border communities in the Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara state revealed that illegal immigrants still crossed the border into the country daily.
The immediate past chairman of Baruten Local Government Council, Abdulrasheed Abdullahi, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said that citizens of the Benin Republic are still migrating into the country through several illegal routes.
Abdullahi said, “Although the border posts have been closed since 2020 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari to beef up security, the border closure has not stopped citizens of Benin Republic who are our neighbours from coming into the country.”
"The e-border control system installed to stop the illegal immigrants from coming to the country had not stopped their citizens from entering Nigeria,” Abdullahi, who ended his tenure as the council chairman in September 2024, added.
The Federal Executive Council approved N52bn for the e-border surveillance system in 2019 to monitor and provide real-time information from major border posts nationwide.
However, the project faced delays due to funding challenges and did not commence until 2022. Nigeria’s extensive borders, covering approximately 5,330 kilometres, have numerous illegal entry points and present ongoing security challenges.
The Nigeria Immigration Service says it has since deployed advanced e-border solutions to over 80 crossing points nationwide, marking the project’s first phase. It says the e-border system offers real-time, 24/7 monitoring and intelligence, enabling better tracking and management of border activities.
Speaking in a telephone with The PUNCH on Monday, the Emir of Yashikira, a border community in Baruten LGA, Umoru Usman, said foreigners cross into the locality daily.
Usman explained, “Despite the border closure and the e-border control system installed by the Federal Government to stop illegal immigration into the country, which are all moves by the government to ensure security, the people from the Benin Republic who are our neighbours still crossed the border. Though we cannot give the figure, people are still crossing the borders on a daily basis.”
When reached for the comments, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kenneth Udo, did not respond to calls to his mobile line. Also, text messages sent to his mobile and WhatsApp number were not answered as of this report.
Meanwhile, the Eselu of Iselu, Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, on Monday, said that the purported N9bn e-border control system project initiated under the Buhari government has failed to check the influx of illegal migrants into the country.
The royal father said there has been a steady increase in the number of illegal migrants moving into the country from the Benin Republic due to the absence of tangible barricades or landmarks demarcating the borders of both countries.
He attributed the influx of illegal migrants for the surge in crime.
Oba Akinyemi said, “The N9bn e-border control system project is a white elephant project just like the botched Nigeria Airways” under the same government of President Buhari.
He expressed doubts about the existence of any e-border control system along the land border with neighbouring Benin Republic. https://punchng.com/fg-n9bn-e-border-project-fails-to-stop-bandits-illegal-aliens/

Politics › I Will Stand As Guarantor, Release Nnamdi Kanu – Abaribe Tells Tinubu by Kuginzi(op): 8:58pm On Jan 06, 2025 |
Abia South Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has expressed his willingness to stand as a guarantor for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
Abaribe made the remark while addressing journalists after his visit to Governor Alex Otti of Enugu State.
He also urged President Bola Tinubu to listen to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi and other stakeholders over their calls to release Kanu.
Abaribe informed Tinubu that releasing Kanu would put a stop to the issue of criminalities in the Southeast.
He said: “I expect that the President will listen to both his Attorney General and every one of us who have been agitating that the issues in the Southeast; first of all the insurgency, the sit-at-home on Mondays and every other thing we have noticed in the Southeast, what we now know in the Southeast is that criminals and all other people who advocate violence have taken over and using the name Nnamdi Kanu to perpetuate all these their despicable acts.
"We know that the President, being a listening President, will also look at all the issues involved which we have presented to him from various mediums and that he will do the needful and release Nnamdi Kanu so that it will put a stop to all these things that are happening in the Southeast and bring back the Southeast as the hub of production in Nigeria.
“So he needs Nnamdi Kanu out so that all those things that are holding us down in the Southeast, that have made us not produce as much as we ought to produce, will not be there.
“So, we continue to call on President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu and we are ready and willing to be guarantors for him to be released so that we can have life coming back into the Southeast and take it away from the criminals, kidnappers, the cultists and dangerous elements that are floating around us who have made it a point that they would perpetrate violence, do criminal activities and use Nnamdi Kanu’s name as their reason.”
Kanu remains incarcerated since June 2021 when he was rearrested and subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.
Upon his return to Nigeria, the Appeal Court in Abuja ordered his release but the Nigerian government refused to let him off the hook. https://dailypost.ng/2025/01/06/biafra-i-will-stand-as-guarantor-release-nnamdi-kanu-abaribe-tells-tinubu/

Politics › I Removed Fuel Subsidy To Prevent Nigeria Becoming Bankrupt — Tinubu by Kuginzi(op): 10:13pm On Jan 04, 2025 |
By Seun Opejobi President Bola Tinubu has said he removed the subsidy on fuel to safeguard the future of Nigerians.
Tinubu said he couldn’t allow Nigeria to go bankrupt, hence the need to remove the subsidy on fuel.
He disclosed this during a town hall meeting with the people of Enugu State after inaugurating some of the projects built by Governor Peter Mbah on Saturday.
According to Tinubu: “We must build this house called Nigeria to not just satisfy our immediate need, but our tomorrow too. That’s why the removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary. We cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they’re born.”
Tinubu had announced the removal of the subsidy on petrol on May 29, 2023.
His actions led to a hike in the prices of commodities, with some of his critics condemning the policy as not well thought out. https://dailypost.ng/2025/01/04/i-removed-fuel-subsidy-to-prevent-nigeria-becoming-bankrupt-tinubu/

Politics › Omokri: Obi Lacks Moral Authority To Criticise Tinubu’s Economic Policies by Kuginzi(op): 7:54am On Jan 04, 2025 |
A former presidential aide, Mr Reno Omokri, has said that Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, lacks the moral authority to criticise President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.
The Labour Party’s former candidate recently assessed the President’s performance as below par. He said his economic policies had left many Nigerians poorer than he met them, advising the President to tour the states to experience first-hand the high poverty rate across the country.
However, Omokri, in a statement on Friday, said Obi did not have the moral right to make adverse comments on Tinubu’s economic policies, because as the governor of Anambra State, his people’s poverty level worsened.
"Peter Obi, who worsened poverty in Anambra State, has no moral authority to accuse President Tinubu, who is reducing it,” the former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan said, adding, “Mr Obi’s recent blunder, in which he urged the President to travel to the states to see the poverty level faced by Nigerians, is just another reminder that the only New Year resolution he appears to have made is to continue to misrepresent statistics through propaganda.”
Omokri recalled that under Tinubu’s watch, Lagos State experienced a reduction in poverty while Obi increased misery in his home state of Anambra State.
"Before Peter Obi took over as Governor of Anambra, poverty in that state was 41.4%. However, under Mr Obi, it grew to 53.7%. This is partly because Peter Obi refused to use the state’s allocations to build infrastructure, preferring to deposit them in his bank to yield interest,” he stated.
He said that rather than building schools and improving the education of his people, the former governor of Anambra State chose to build breweries, which he claimed benefited his family’s interests.
Omokri said Obi’s persistent criticism of Tinubu’s economic policies was mischievous because it discountenanced its increasing gains in the last 18 months.
He said that with the autonomy the President has secured for the local governments, the people at the grassroots level will witness poverty reduction as the councils’ direct funding starts this month.

Omokri said: “Obi is fixated on President Tinubu because he wants the President’s power and the ability to wield it well. Therefore, he is the wrong person to advise about fighting poverty. Obi is the problem. President Tinubu is the solution.
