Belgian Foreign Minister announces his country will recognize “Palestine” and impose sanctions on Israel over its actions in Gaza. The move includes sanctions on Israeli “settlements” and support for a two-state solution. Belgium has announced its decision to recognize a Palestinian state and impose firm sanctions on Israel in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Among the 12 national sanctions implemented by Belgium are restrictions on the importation of goods from Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, the suspension of public procurement with Israeli companies, and a reduction in consular services to Belgians living in illegal settlements. Additionally, the government has taken steps to block several extremists, including Israeli ministers and violent “settlers”, from entering the country, labeling them "persona non grata." Prevot also confirmed that Belgium would support measures at the European Union level to suspend collaborations with Israel, including the suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement, research programs, and technical cooperation. Further, Belgium will officially recognize “Palestine” as a state, in line with the joint initiative of France and Saudi Arabia, who have announced their intention to recognize “Palestine” at the UN General Assembly later this month. "This gesture is a clear condemnation of Israel’s expansionist policies, including its settlement programs and military occupations," Prevot stated. The move was announced by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot in a post on Monday night. Prevot condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, arguing they violate international law and obligations to prevent genocide. "The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic proportions. Israel's actions, violating international law and its responsibilities, have forced us to take decisive steps to pressure the Israeli government and the Hamas terrorists," wrote Prevot. He emphasized that the sanctions were not directed at the Israeli people, but aimed at holding the Israeli government accountable and ensuring that international and humanitarian law are respected. Prevot also confirmed that Belgium would support measures at the European Union level to suspend collaborations with Israel, including the suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement, research programs, and technical cooperation. He wrote that the recognition will take place after the formal release of all hostages by Hamas and when Hamas no longer maintains governance over Palestinian Arab territories. Belgium also reaffirmed its commitment to support the reconstruction of “Palestine” and intensify efforts against antisemitism, mobilizing security services and Jewish community representatives. Belgium was among 26 countries that issued a joint statement in July, demanding an immediate end to the war in Gaza, expressing alarm over the worsening humanitarian situation and accusing Israel of imposing unacceptable restrictions on aid. Also in July, Belgian authorities arrested two Israeli citizens attending the Tomorrowland music festival in the country and interrogated them on suspicion of war crimes in Gaza. The arrest followed a report submitted by the Hind Rijab Foundation, which works to prosecute IDF soldiers around the world. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/414244

Jack Burgess Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across Israel to oppose the government's plan to expand its military operation in Gaza. On Friday, Israel's security cabinet approved five principles to end the war that included 'taking security control' over the Gaza Strip, with the Israeli military saying it would "prepare for taking control" of Gaza City. Protesters, including family members of 50 hostages in Gaza, 20 of whom are still thought to be alive, fear the plan puts the lives of hostages at risk, and urged the government to secure their release. Israeli leaders have rejected criticism of their plan, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying "this will help free our hostages". A group representing families of the hostages said on X: "Expanding the fighting endangers the hostages and the soldiers - the people of Israel are not willing to risk them!" One protester Shakha, rallying in Jerusalem on Saturday, told the BBC: "We want the war to end because our hostages are dying there, and we need them all to be home now." "Whatever it takes to do, we need to do it. And if it needs to stop the war, we'll stop the war." Among the protesters in Jerusalem was a former soldier who told the BBC he is now refusing to serve. Max Kresch said he was a combat soldier at the beginning of the war and "has since refused." "We're over 350 soldiers who served during the war and we're refusing to continue to serve in Netanyahu's political war that endangers the hostages (and) starving innocent Palestinians in Gaza," he said. The Times of Israel reported that family members of hostages and soldiers at a protest in Tel Aviv near the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) headquarters called on other soldiers to refuse to serve in the expanded military operation to protect hostages. The mother of one of the hostages has called for a general strike in Israel, and the main opposition leader, Yair Lapid, said it would be a "justified and worthy" response. However, the country's main labour union will not back a strike, according to the Times of Israel. During Saturday night's demonstrations, Tel Aviv's Ayalon Highway was blocked by protesters who lit bonfires. Three suspects were arrested and "materials intended for setting fires on main roads" were seized, Israeli police said. Netanyahu has also faced strong opposition from the army's Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir who, according to Israeli media, had warned the prime minister that a full occupation of Gaza was "tantamount to walking into a trap" and would endanger the living hostages. Polls suggest most of the Israeli public favour a deal with Hamas for the release of the hostages and the end of the war. Netanyahu had told Fox News earlier this week that Israel planned to occupy of the entire Gaza Strip and eventually "hand it over to Arab forces". "We are not going to occupy Gaza - we are going to free Gaza from Hamas," Netanyahu said on X on Friday. "This will help free our hostages and ensure Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel in the future." The Israeli security cabinet's plan lists five "principles" for ending the war: disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarising the Gaza Strip, taking security control of the territory, and establishing "an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority". A top UN official earlier this week warned that a complete military takeover of Gaza City would risk "catastrophic consequences" for Palestinians civilians and hostages. Up to one million Palestinians live in Gaza City in the north of the Gaza Strip, which was the enclave's most populous city before the war. The UK, France, Canada and several other countries have condemned Israel's decision and Germany announced that it would halt its military exports to Israel in response. The United Nations Security Council will meet on Sunday to discuss Israel's plan. International leaders and UN agencies have also called on Israel, which controls the entry of all goods into Gaza, to allow more humanitarian aid and food into the territory amid a growing number of reported deaths due to hunger. Five people, including two children, died in Gaza during the past 24 hours due to malnutrition, the Hamas-run health ministry said on Sunday. The total number of malnutrition-related deaths in Gaza is now 217, including 100 children, the health ministry added. Israel has blamed Hamas and denied starvation in Gaza. However, UN-backed food security experts assessed in July that "the worst case scenario of famine is already playing out". The BBC and other news organisations are not allowed by Israel to report independently from Gaza. At least 59 people were killed and 363 injured in the past 24 hours as a result of Israel's military operation, the health ministry said, with 35 people killed while trying to get aid. Israel began its military offensive in Gaza after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Since then, 61,430 people have been killed in Gaza as a result of Israeli military operations, the health ministry says. By Samuel Akpan Elisha Abbo, former Adamawa north senator, says he has fasted and prayed for 31 days to seek God’s guidance on his next political move. In a post via X on Friday, Abbo, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020, said at the time, he made the decision without spiritual guidance. "In 2020, I left PDP for APC without praying and asking God’s direction on which party to join,” he wrote. I left for tangible reasons and raw instincts and joined APC out of human judgment and to flow with the tide.” Abbo, however, said he is now seeking divine direction ahead of his planned exit from the APC. “This time around, I undertook 31 days of fasting and prayers, seeking direction among other things, I asked God to do for me,” he said. “In few weeks time, a tentative official statement will be issued by my humble self after due final consultation with my people on what the spirit told me. “I am no longer moved by sight, sweet words, emotions or just mere instincts. I am now moved by the spirit of God and calm, spirited negotiations.” Abbo was first elected to the senate in 2019 on the platform of the PDP before defecting to the APC the following year. He was re-elected in 2023, but in October, the court of appeal sacked him and declared Amos Yohanna, candidate of the PDP, as the winner of the Adamawa north senatorial election. https://www.thecable.ng/extra-i-left-pdp-for-apc-without-prayers-ive-now-fasted-31-days-says-elisha-abbo/

By Charles Collins Pope Leo XIV once again appealed for an end to the conflict in the Holy Land, where tens of thousands of people have died during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Speaking about his General Audience in the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican, the pontiff said the conflict is causing “so much terror, destruction, and death.” The Gaza War broke out following an Oct. 7, 2023, surprise attack by Hamas militants that left 1,200 Israelis dead and saw 251 people taken as hostages. Israel launched a retaliatory offensive in Gaza to oust Hamas from leadership, with the ensuing conflict resulting in the deaths of around 70,000 people to date in Gaza, according to Palestinian estimates. A peace deal made earlier this year broke down, and Israel has increased its attacks on Gaza, killing thousands of people, most of them civilians. On July 17, 2025, an Israeli tank fired on the Church of the Holy Family, the only Catholic parish in Gaza. The attack killed three people and injured several others, including Father Gabriel Romanelli, the pastor of the church. In his appeal on Aug. 27, Pope Leo implored that all hostages be freed, a permanent ceasefire be reached, the safe entry of humanitarian aid be facilitated, and humanitarian law be fully respected, “particularly the obligation to protect civilians and the prohibitions on collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force, and the forced displacement of populations.” “Let us implore Mary, Queen of Peace, source of consolation and hope. May her intercession bring reconciliation and peace to that land so dear to all,” the pontiff said. been enough devastation, in the territories and in people’s lives. There is no reason to justify keeping civilians as prisoners and hostages in dramatic conditions. It is now time for the healing of the long-suffering families on all sides,” they say. “With equal urgency, we appeal to the international community to act for an end of this senseless and destructive war, and for the return of the missing people and the Israeli hostages,” the statement says. On Wednesday, Pope Leo said he joined in the Joint Declaration of the Greek Orthodox and Latin Patriarchs of Jerusalem, “who [on Tuesday] called for an end to this spiral of violence, an end to the war, and a priority for the common good of all people.” https://cruxnow.com/vatican/2025/08/pope-leo-laments-terror-destruction-and-death-in-gaza

JAKARTA, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Police fired tear gas and used a water cannon to push back hundreds of demonstrators trying to break into Indonesia's parliament building on Monday to protest against what they called excessive pay and perks for legislators, witnesses said. Some protesters, clad in dark clothing, threw rocks and set off fireworks at riot police in the capital Jakarta. At least one motorcycle was set ablaze by protesters, but officials did not provide details of damage, any casualties or arrests. Protesters marched through the streets around the parliament building, calling for a salary cut for parliamentarians, according to a press release by Gejayan Memanggil, one of the groups organising the protest formed by students in the Yogyakarta province. This month, local media reported parliamentarians were paid upwards of 100 million rupiah ($6,150) a month, including a substantial housing allowance. While Indonesia is Southeast Asia's largest economy, that remuneration is far above the average income in the archipelago of 3.1 million rupiah. Demonstrators also protested against what they termed "corrupt elites" within the government and policies that benefit conglomerates and the military, the press release said, in an apparent reference to the growing role of the military in civilian life under President Prabowo Subianto, a former general. Some were seen on television footage carrying a flag from the Japanese manga series "One Piece", which has become a symbol of protest against government policies in the country. Jakarta police spokesperson Ade Ary Syam Indradi told reporters 1,250 police personnel were deployed to maintain security around the building. The parliament's speaker and deputy speakers of parliament, as well as a spokesperson for Prabowo, did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Parliament speaker Puan Maharani told local media she would accommodate all aspirations from the public. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/indonesian-police-clash-with-protesters-against-parliamentarians-salaries-2025-08-25/

Did Israel know over 80 percent of those it killed in Gaza were civilians? Israel claims it is targeting fighters from Hamas, not civilians, but a leaked military report reveals a different story. The high civilian death toll makes Israel’s assault on Gaza City, which it said has already begun, even more frightening.

SaniPublished on August 16, 2025By Seun Opejobi Recently, there have been unconfirmed reports that former President Goodluck Jonathan could join the race for the 2027 presidential election. Those flying the news believe he could be the right man to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the polls. Apart from Jonathan, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar is also seen in some circles as one of the favourites. However, former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Anthony Sani, in this interview with DAILY POST, rules out the possibility of Atiku and Jonathan defeating Tinubu if he they join the race in 2027. Excerpts! With the numbers of imminent Nigerian politicians in the coalition, do you think ADC stands a chance of unseating Tinubu in 2027? I am not a psychologist but I guess that the coalition would not be able to unseat the incumbent president precisely because the eminent people joining the ADC are from PDP. As a result, the opposition is being split and weakened by the movement to ADP. You would recall the APC prevailed in 2023 because Peter Obi and five Governors G5 under the watch of Gov Wike left PDP. Such a split of opposition seems to repeat itself for 2027. Can Atiku muster the kind of votes he got during the 2023 presidential election in 2027 should he decide to finally run in 2027? Since most southerners would prefer the president to remain in the South for eight years from 2023 and most Northerners would prefer President Bola Tinubu because he is the only southerner who has only one term of four years to go, it will be difficult for former VP Atiku to device any winning game plan in the circumstance. With the current political atmosphere in the North, where is the region likely to swing in 2027? Stay with Tinubu or back its own, Atiku if he decides to run? I told you the dynamics of the politics of zoning does not favor Atiku because both the North and the South want the president to be in the North in 2031. Note that in 2023, Bola Tinubu prevailed in the north despite Atiku being their own, all because of the politics of zoning. There are reports that Jonathan has accepted to run in 2027, do you think it’s the right move? I have read reports that former President Jonathan has agreed to join the presidential contest under the PDP. But I am not sure that will be a wise decision in the sense that the former president is politically savvy and savant enough not to know that the main opposition is currently fragmented- into former VP Atiku to contest in ADC, Peter Obi to contest in Labour Party and the former president Jonathan in PDP- and not sturdy enough to confront the incumbent and prevail. Considering the current state of Nigeria, does Jonathan have what it takes to turn the tide around? What is more, there is nothing in his past performances that suggests he can overcome the current insecurity, to overwhelm the corruption that steals our empowerment, steals our opportunity and steals our future, and turn the economy around. https://dailypost.ng/2025/08/16/2027-atiku-jonathan-cant-defeat-tinubu-north-wants-2031-arewa-leader-sani/

By Tom Jones Usen A former vice-president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has said that leaders after former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, did little in checkmating insurgency and the rise in terror groups across the nation. Atiku made this assertion on Wednesday in Abuja during a visit by stakeholders from Kogi East Senatorial District, led by former Kogi State Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba. “So I hold our leadership responsible for all the insecurity that is going on all over the place” According to the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) flagbearer during the 2023 presidential election, Obasanjo was decisive in quelling Boko Haram when it reared its head over two decades ago in Yobe. “You remember when the Boko Haram started in Yobe? It was actually in 2002. We were in the office. The president sent for me. ‘VP, what do we do about this?’ Then I said, ‘Mr President, let’s call the Service Chiefs and give them a deadline. If they can’t put it down, then they should put down their uniform and go away. We will get some other people,” Atiku said in a video shared on his official Facebook handle. Atiku added, “So, I will say there’s a lack of political will on the leaders. When they’re killing your citizens, how can you even eat? They’re killing your citizens and you don’t give a damn; that is the greatest irresponsibility by any political leader, anywhere. Boko Haram has been waging a 15-year insurgency for an Islamic caliphate in Nigeria, which has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced around two million more. https://www.channelstv.com/2025/05/16/leaders-after-obasanjo-responsible-for-growing-insecurity-in-nigeria-says-atiku/

By Francis Ugwu Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that there will be no political party in Akwa Ibom State come the 2027 general election. The Senate President claimed that all political parties have collapsed to vote for him for the Senate of Ikot-Ekpene Senatorial District. Akpabio, who stated this on Friday during his midterm empowerment briefing held at Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) umbrella has been torn into shreds and can no longer protect the people. Akpabio is representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District at the Senate. “As I speak with you, there is nothing like a political party in 2027 in Akwa Ibom State again. For the Senate of Ikot-Ekpene Senatorial District, all political parties have collapsed to vote for Senator Godswill Akpabio,” he said. Akpabio further described the state governor, Umo Eno, as a man of peace and one who professes God in his heart, adding that there are people who profess God with their lips and not their hearts. https://dailypost.ng/2025/05/16/therell-be-nothing-like-political-parties-in-2027-akpabio/

By Cletus Ukpong The Court of Appeal in Calabar, on Wednesday, upheld the conviction of Peter Ogban, a professor jailed in 2021 for rigging a senatorial election for Godswill Akpabio, a senator from Akwa Ibom State. Mr Akpabio, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is the president of the Nigerian Senate. The rigging happened in an election he lost before he contested again in 2023, won the election, and was elected the Senate president. Mr Ogban, a professor of soil science at the University of Calabar and a returning officer in the 2019 general elections in Akwa Ibom North-West District, was jailed for three years by a State High Court in Uyo for announcing fake election results in two local government areas – Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo – in Mr Akpabio’s favour. A lawyer who participated in the case at the appellate court told PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday afternoon that the Court of Appeal, apart from affirming Mr Ogban’s conviction and three-year jail term, frowned at his role as a university professor in the fraudulent manipulation of election results. The case for hearing was a fundamental human rights enforcement suit she instituted earlier in the month to block EFCC and other law enforcement agencies from arresting her following her being declared wanted last month. During Wednesday’s hearing, the judge, Inyang Ekwo, ordered EFCC to release Ms Achimugu within 24 hours. The judge also ordered the agency to report compliance with the order in court on 2 May Background Mr Ogban had told the trial court in Uyo how the election results were falsified to give the APC an unfair advantage over its main rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). For instance, some 5,000 fake votes were added to the APC’s score in Oruk Anam in the election. Mr Akpabio was seeking a return to the Senate after he defected from the PDP. The PDP candidate, Chris Ekpenyong, a former deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State, defeated Mr Akpabio in the election, which was gripped by pockets of violence. INEC prosecuted Mr Agban in the landmark case. Before his sentencing, the professor pleaded for mercy from the judge, Augustine Odokwo. Justice Odokwo, who described the case as novel, told the lecturer that there was not much he could do other than let the law take its course. He said the prosecution was able to prove its case against Mr Ogban, beyond any reasonable doubt. Another professor, Ignatius Uduk, was recently jailed by a State High Court in Uyo for election fraud. Mr Uduk, a professor of Human Kinetics in the Department of Physical and Health Education at the University of Uyo, was jailed for three years. INEC prosecuted him on three charges: announcement of false election results, publication of false results, and perjury during the 2019 general elections in Essien Udim State Constituency, where he served as INEC’s collation and returning officer. The professor falsified the election results to the advantage of the APC candidate, Nse Ntuen, who was then an ally of Mr Akpabio. However, Mr Uduk was recently granted bail by a State High Court in Uyo. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/south-south-regional/791503-breaking-appeal-court-upholds-conviction-of-professor-jailed-for-rigging-election-for-akpabio.html
