Politics / Economic Hardship: Cassava, Potatoes To The Rescue In Borno, Taraba by Kuginzi: 8:19am On Nov 05, 2023
As you step out of the streets of Maiduguri and Jalingo, capitals of Borno and Taraba states, different aromas of fast food attract potential buyers. Daily Trust on Sunday reports that because of the economic situation in the country, many Nigerians now resort to boiled sweet potatoes and cassava because of their affordability.

Taimakon gaggawa, also known as “emergency aid,” is increasingly becoming popular and the most sort after by the poor and even the middle class because of its affordability.

Majority of commuters and passersby in Maiduguri and Jalingo are now smartly bypassing suya and roasted chicken spots that used to be everyone’s favourite to buying sweet potatoes and cassava cuisines due to hard economic realities.

Daily Trust on Sunday toured the streets and other public places in Maiduguri and Jalingo, where a very large number of vendors sell cassava to regular customers for breakfast and lunch.

Also, buyers of boiled and cassava tubers interviewed by our correspondents said that as the prices of cereals soar, sweet potatoes and cassava became the choice of the poor, and probably the future of Nigerian fast food.

A housewife, Aisha Abubakar, said sweet potatoes and cassava had become saviour to millions of households in Nigeria.

If you go to the market today you would see a mad rush for cassava, sweet potato and their products: garri, tapioca, cassava flour, cassava cake, ‘dan wake’, potato flakes and other delicacies in the streets because they are among the cheapest so far.

"Everyone is looking for a way to deal with the difficult economic situation and these tubers are now their options,” she said.

One of the sweet potato vendors, Mustapha Ali, who claimed to have spent 15 years in the business, said it had become the only staple food people buy without break because of its affordability, and it requires less ingredients to prepare.

"Last year, we were very few in this business because not many people bought it as it was just considered a snack. They took very little of it, but because of the economic hardship now, the demand has increased and many have resorted to it. I now cook and sell at least two bags of sweet potatoes every day,” he said.

Another seller, Modu Mustafa, said that despite the high demand, the price of sweet potatoes still reduced from N23,000 to N18,500 per bag.

“Few days back, we used to buy a bag of sweet potatoes between N23,000 and N25,000, but as God would have it, it is now N18,500, making life easier for the poor,” he said.

Yusuf Aminu, a sweet potato consumer said the increased demand for the food in Maiduguri was overwhelming.

“If you go to the markets and roadsides, it will look as if it’s only sweet potatoes that everyone is selling, both cooked and raw. Both the poor and the middle class patronise it,” he said.

Taraba

In Taraba, findings revealed that cooked cassava is now a major staple in most homes in the capital city as majority of the residents have resorted to it.

A Jalingo-based journalist, Ya’ u Ibrahim, said that in the face of the high cost of foodstuff, cassava products became the solution.

“You don’t need ingredients to cook cassava, all you need is groundnut cake and spices and you will have a delicious meal for the day,” he said.

Ibrahim said he opted for cassava when rice, yam and maize became costly, adding that he only spends N1,500 on cassava to feed his family.

"Also, cassava is still cheaper even though prices of food items have dropped in the state,” he added.

A civil servant, Mallam Umaru Abubakar said he opted for cassava when he could not afford to buy rice or maize because of its cost.

According to him, in the past he did not like eating cassava but the situation has forced him to eat it regularly.

"Two months ago, my salary was not enough to buy a bag of maize because it was sold at the rate of N57,000, but with N1,000 l can buy cassava to feed my family,” he said

Politics / Poverty Not A Shameful Thing But Nigeria Must Dig Itself Out, Says Tinubu by Kuginzi: 8:17pm On Nov 04, 2023
President Bola Tinubu has tasked members of his cabinet and other top management staff of the civil service to work together, change the narrative of Nigeria, and bring economic prosperity to the country.

The president said this at the closing ceremony of a three-day cabinet retreat which took place in the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

He also obtained a promise from them that they would work for Nigerians and work as a team to achieve for the country.

Tinubu said: “Since we are one family and one nation, and we are in this vehicle together, to change the narrative and bring about economic prosperity of our country; are we ready?”

"Poverty is not a shameful thing but it’s not just acceptable. If you check your history, there’s a trace of poverty in it but we should find a way to dig ourselves out of it,” Tinubu added. “So, it is left for you and me to navigate his ship out of poverty. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Foreign Affairs / Biden Calls For "Pause" In Israel-hamas War by Kuginzi: 10:35pm On Nov 02, 2023
Minneapolis — President Biden said he thought there should be a humanitarian "pause" in the Israel-Hamas war, after his campaign speech Wednesday evening was interrupted by a protester calling for a cease-fire. "I think we need a pause," Mr. Biden said.

The call was a subtle departure for Mr. Biden and top White House aides who throughout the Mideast crisis have been steadfast in saying they will not dictate how the Israelis carry out their military operations in response to the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

But the president has faced intensifying pressure from human rights groups, fellow world leaders and even liberal members of his own Democratic Party who say that the Israeli bombardment of Gaza is collective punishment and that it is time for a cease-fire.

In his comments, Mr. Biden was exerting pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to give Palestinians at least a brief reprieve from the relentless military operation that's left thousands dead and mired the 141-square-mile strip in a roiling humanitarian crisis.

The White House has declined to call for a cease-fire but has signaled that the Israelis should consider humanitarian pauses to allow civilians to receive aid and for foreign nationals trapped on the strip to leave Gaza.

The president was speaking to a crowd of supporters in Minneapolis when a woman got up and yelled, "Mr. President, if you care about Jewish people, as a rabbi, I need you to call for a cease-fire."

Mr. Biden replied, "I think we need a pause. A pause means give time to get the prisoners out."

He went on to say, "I'm the guy that convinced Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) to call for a ceasefire to let the prisoners out. I'm the guy that talked to Sisi (Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi) to convince him to open the door" to let humanitarian aid enter through the Rafah border crossing from Gaza into Egypt.

White House sources told CBS News Mr. Biden was referring to Judith and Natalie Raanan of Illinois, the mother and daughter who were released earlier this month after Hamas held them hostage. The pause in hostilities lasted "a few hours" to facilitate the transfer, the sources said.

Mr. Biden's presence in the city drew more than 1,000 demonstrators near the fundraiser. They carried Palestinian flags and signs that said "Stop Bombing Children," "Free Palestine" and "Ceasefire now."

Mr. Biden said he understood the emotions motivating the demonstrator, who was quickly shouted down by others in the room and removed.

"This is incredibly complicated for the Israelis," Mr. Biden went on. "It's incredibly complicated for the Muslim world as well. ... I supported a two-state solution, I have from the very beginning."

"The fact of the matter is that Hamas is a terrorist organization. A flat-out terrorist organization," he said.

But Mr. Biden noted that he's been working on humanitarian aid, saying he was the one who persuaded both Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi to allow aid into Gaza.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said earlier on Wednesday that the president's newly confirmed ambassador to Israel, Jack Lew, would soon be dispatched to the Middle East and would be tasked in part with "supporting U.S. efforts to create the conditions for a humanitarian pause to address the worsening humanitarian conditions facing Palestinian civilians."

Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Herzog told "The Hill" on NewsNation Wednesday "we don't need urging" in response to calls for more aid for Gaza.

"We are ramping up humanitarian supplies into Gaza in those areas which are away from Hamas in the southern part of Gaza. The number of truckloads doubles and is going to pick up more and more," he said. "We provide water. We provide other types of supplies."

He told NewsNation they were happy to see foreigners leave Gaza. "So we don't need urging, urging in that sense. Our Cabinet discussed this week this issue and decided there are no limitations as long as we can make sure that Hamas does not put its hands on humanitarian supplies and uses them to feed its war machine. That will not happen. Short of that, everything is open."

Travel / Foreigners Troop To Nigeria As Citizens Japa In Search Of Greener Pastures by Kuginzi: 7:55am On Oct 29, 2023
A recent visit to the departure hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos was a beehive of activities with thousands of Nigerians leaving the country. From findings, majority of them were going with a one-way ticket, which means that they have no intention of coming back soon, if at all they would return.

This is the reality of the moment as the japa syndrome that has hit the country’s fabric has continued unabated, with thousands of Nigerians leaving the country on a daily basis in search of what is usually known as the greener pastures in Europe, America and other countries, where they believe there are opportunities.

The founder of a medical facility in Lagos recently complained how he lost virtually all his personnel (doctors and nurses) to the Japa syndrome, leaving him virtually stranded and unable to cope with the number of patients trooping to his clinic. This is the case in other sectors as citizens flee the country while the country’s human resource is badly depleted.

In the first half of 2023, the United Kingdom, which is unarguably the first country of destination by many Nigerians, especially those going for further studies with their dependents, said it issued some 132,000 visas to Nigerians.

According to Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, “In the first half of the year we granted approximately 132,000 visas, which include visit, work and study.

“In the previous full year before that, we issued about 324,000. In that year, the United Kingdom issued about three million visas, and of the number, 324,000 were issued to Nigerians, which is about 10 per cent.”

Apart from the United Kingdom, those going on irregular migration through the Sahara desert are also in thousands despite the risk involved as shown in the figure of evacuation. In the first half of 2023, no fewer than 4,000 Nigerians were stranded in different countries, especially the Middle East and were evacuated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in different exercises.

The IOM, through its Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme, also repatriated over 3,000 Nigerians from Libya alone in 2023, with majority of the returnees languishing in Libyan detention camps before the help of the IOM came. They were arrested after failed attempts to cross to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea.

While this migration, whether regularly or irregularly, otherwise known as Japa, has continued, some foreigners are not seeing an entirely hopeless situation in Nigeria as many of them also troop to the country on a daily basis for businesses.

Foreigners find solace in Nigeria

Findings by Daily Trust on Sunday indicate that many foreigners from China, India, Lebanon, United Kingdom, among others, have also found Nigerians as home, leveraging on opportunities in the country in oil and gas, construction, telecommunication sector, among others.

Our correspondent gathered that foreigners trooping into the country for businesses have virtually tripled in recent times, with China leading. Also, Indians, Lebanese, among other nationals have made Nigeria their homes, working in various sectors.

From Ikeja GRA to Victoria Island, the Lebanese community in Nigeria has grown over time, becoming one of the largest diaspora communities in Nigeria with about 75,000 people. The existence of blue chip companies owned by Lebanese, as well as construction sites belonging to their nationals, has seen some of their kinsmen playing significant roles in their operation.

Similarly, the Chinese community has grown in leaps and bounds owing to the various construction projects handled by Chinese construction giants in Nigeria like the China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) handling various railway projects. The CCECC constructed the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway, Abuja-Kaduna rail, Kaduna-Kano rail, the four new international airport terminals, among other projects.

In addition, findings by our correspondent showed that many Chinese are working at various quarry sites across Nigeria.

Our correspondent recently visited the popular Chinese Village in Lagos, which has become a marketplace for their nationals in the state, where they live and ply their trade.

According to an official of the village, more Chinese nationals troop into the village on a daily basis.

“If you need any special Chinese attire or product, you see hundreds of China Town vendors in this village. They are here making a living and contributing to the economy of the state and Nigeria in general,” the manager said.

India is another big community in Nigeria spread across the South and northern part of the country. According to India’s High Commissioner in Nigeria, Gangadharan Balasubramanian, there are no fewer than 60,000 Indians who have made Nigeria their home. In all, there are estimated 90,000 Indians in Nigeria working in various industries, especially the manufacturing sector.

In most cases, they are filling vacancies in management and technical positions, especially where the expertise is lacking in Nigeria. But many Nigerians have also raised questions about the abuse of expatriate quota.

Daily Trust on Sunday reports that expatriate quota policy enables foreign companies to recruit foreign employees to work legitimately in Nigeria.

Visas-on-arrival doubled

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the number of visas-on- arrival (VoA) issued at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos has doubled since the policy was implemented in line with the ease of doing business policy of the federal government.

From 38,000 VoAs issued at the busiest airport alone in 2018, the number grew to 53,644 in 2022. While efforts to get this year’s figure were futile as the immigration declined to release it, our correspondent learnt that more people are coming into the country for businesses.

Opportunities abound in Nigeria – Foreigners

Some foreigners who spoke with our correspondent said opportunities still abounded in Nigeria despite the Japa syndrome.

An Indian who has made Nigeria his home said there were opportunities for the people to explore, especially in the technology and start-up ecosystem.

The Indian businessman, Anil Rai, who resides at Ilupeju, Lagos said, “Nigeria is known for having many different cultures and lots of good things to offer. One important thing is that there are various opportunities for both people and the environment. People in Nigeria are friendly to one another and show a lot of respect to their bosses at work. They are also eager to learn new things and use new technology.

How to reduce the Japa syndrome

On the Japa syndrome, he said that while there are opportunities in Nigeria, there are also challenges.

“The problem is the economic situation, interest rate and inflation. When I talk to people who actually engage in the Japa syndrome, they talk about their children, the education system in the country and other practical things. There are lots of elements but that is up to the new Nigerian government to make sure that these things are tweaked and the economy would be growing again.”

He said if the economy of Nigeria grew, jobs would be created and the Japa syndrome would reduce.

Politics / LP Resorting To Masses’ Court, Says LP Campaign Spokesman, Yunusa Tanko by Kuginzi: 8:40pm On Oct 26, 2023
The spokesman for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, has lamented that the Supreme Court turned deaf ears to the several pleas made by the party.

The apex court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed the petitions filed by the LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, against the election of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 presidential poll.

Reacting to the judgment, Tanko, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday, said, “As far as we are concerned, we have brought out our cases beyond reasonable doubt, but the court chose to look at the other side and turn a deaf ear to our plea. And they have taken their decision.

“As democrats, we will not do anything otherwise but rather resort to the masses’ court — the public and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They can analyse this judgment vis-a-vis what they are facing at the moment and what’s the credibility of the leadership already enthroned.”

Tanko added, “We’ll continue to be law-abiding and follow the dictates of democracy. Don’t forget that democracy also gives room for people to speak on issues if they feel they are being offended. So we have done our bit and we will leave this particular issue now to the masses’ court.”

He insisted that the party asked for Tinubu’s disqualification because of their belief that he was not qualified to run for election.

He added, “Also, we made a plea as regards the interpretation of the 25 per cent qualification of the Federal Capital Territory.

"We also made a plea as regards the issue of the processes in which INEC followed according to the Electoral Act which all fell on deaf ears.”

The spokesman added that Obi would make pronouncements on his political future soon.

Foreign Affairs / Not In My Name’: The European Jews Condemning Israel’s War On Gaza by Kuginzi: 8:35pm On Oct 23, 2023
By Alasdair Soussi

When Jonathan Ofir heard the West-led chorus of vehement condemnations of the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, coupled with a flood of statements supporting the country’s right — in effect — to retaliate, he feared he knew what that meant.

"That is, a green light for Israel to carry out a much larger massacre than the one they were revenging,” said the Jewish musician, conductor and writer.

More than 1,400 people were killed in Israel in the Hamas attack, prompting the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare war on the armed Palestinian group. An incessant and brutal bombing campaign by Israel has since killed more than 5,100 people in the Gaza Strip, with large parts of the territory reduced to rubble in just over a fortnight. A Palestinian NGO reported that the Israeli bombing of Gaza had tragically claimed the lives of one Palestinian child every 15 minutes since the start of the conflict.

Ofir, a pro-Palestinian campaigner who was born in Israel but lives in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, is among many Europe-based Jews who are critical of Israel’s policies and have joined protests that have exploded across the continent against the ongoing attacks on Gaza.

From Glasgow to London, Paris to Barcelona, many have joined pro-Palestinian rallies to express solidarity with the people of the blockaded enclave. They represent a vocal minority of Jews that continue to make the case for the rights of a people who have lived under Israeli occupation for generations – the Palestinians – just as they have for decades.

“Israel claims Jews as its national asset, and it weaponises us, as Jews – both as bodies in the demographic battle vis-a-vis non-Jews and particularly Palestinians, and ideologically as born representatives of the Jewish state – [and] seeks to do that to Jews worldwide,” Ofir told Al Jazeera. “That claim, in turn, makes [us] the human shields of the state, as it assaults Palestinians under its settler-colonialist agenda, be it through ongoing ethnic cleansing, through siege or through seasonal massacres.”

Naama Farjoun largely grew up in Jerusalem, but has long described herself as an anti-Zionist Jew. In January 2001, she left Israel, just months after the outbreak of the second Intifada. Today, the 54-year-old lives on the outskirts of Valencia, Spain.

"I left [Israel] because I could not bear the burden of being a privileged [Israeli] citizen in a racist state,” said the mother of two, who said that she was daily angered by the “Israeli occupation and discrimination of my Palestinian co-citizens”.

Farjoun told Al Jazeera that the Hamas attack on Israel brought her “great sorrow … causing suffering no one should endure”. But she added: “I believe the current tragic events are a direct result of years of abuse, repression, violence and deprivation implemented by the State of Israel.”

Jews — including Israeli Jews — voicing their condemnation of Israel’s conduct against the Palestinians is not a new phenomenon. So-called Israeli refuseniks – citizens of Israel who have snubbed its compulsory military service laws in protest of the country’s treatment of the Palestinians – have often served jail time for their principles.

Joseph Abileah, an Austrian-born musician, is widely considered to be the first individual in Israel to stand trial for refusing to serve in the Israeli military, doing so just months after the Jewish state was established in 1948. The violinist managed to escape a prison sentence, and his stance paved the way for generations of Israeli conscientious objectors.

Yet just as Israel’s refuseniks often face backlash for their convictions, so too do pro-Palestinian Jews elsewhere.

It is, said one European resident, rarely easy to publicly support Palestine and condemn Israel as a self-declared Jew.

“When I first started identifying myself as Jewish and supporting Palestinian rights on X [formerly Twitter], the issue in the UK was closely bound up with Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party,” said British citizen Tom London, referring to the strident pro-Palestinian convictions of former United Kingdom opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn.

He added to Al Jazeera: “I got plenty of abuse then on X, including describing me as an anti-Semite and saying I was lying about being Jewish. Someone once went through every tweet I had ever sent – but found nothing to help their vile and ridiculous claim that I was an anti-Semite.”

At the time of this writing, a Jewish Voice for Peace petition, calling for an immediate end to the Israeli attack on Gaza, has gathered more than 1,300 signatures from Israeli citizens living in Israel, Palestine and abroad. “As a Jew, and particularly as an Israeli Jew, I feel it is incumbent upon me to say that this is not in my name, and I will fight it as such,” asserted Ofir. “Because freedom, justice and equality for Palestinians is a necessity, and if that necessity doesn’t get sufficed, it is not only harming them, it will come to haunt Jews.”

People sheltering at the Saint Porphyrius Orthodox church which was hit by an Israeli airstrike on Thursday, killing 18 including several children.

Gaza City – Ibrahim Jahsan’s young family has been sheltering at the Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza City since the war began.

One of Gaza’s 1,000 Christians, Jahsan never doubted the church was a safe space for him, his pregnant wife and two children aged five and six. The Greek Orthodox church – the oldest in the city, located in the Zaytoun neighbourhood – has traditionally served as a sanctuary for both Christians and Muslims during Israel’s periodic wars against Gaza.

The church was sheltering hundreds of people when an Israeli bomb severely damaged one of the four buildings in its compound on Thursday evening, causing its ceiling to collapse and leaving dozens trapped under slabs of concrete, according to witnesses.

By Friday afternoon, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem told Al Jazeera at least 18 people were confirmed to have been killed, including several children.

We thought we would be protected’
“The building that they bombed is beside the church,” said Jahsan, still shaken from what he says was a massive blast. “We just pray to god to end this war.”

About 200 children, women, elderly and sick people were taking shelter at the church when Israeli warplanes targeted the building with two raids, said Ibrahim Al-Souri, another survivor who had also been taking shelter.

We thought we would be protected by the church but unfortunately the brutal Israeli occupation does not differentiate,” he said. “They have targeted churches, mosques and hospitals. There is no safe place.”

Al-Souri called on free people around the world to pressure their governments to stop the bloodshed against Palestinians.

"We know that the world leaders are against us, but as [former PLO leader] Yasser Arafat said, we are a mighty people. And this is the price we have to pay,” he said.

According to Father Issa Musleh of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Bethlehem, the building that collapsed was part of the church’s compound. Dozens were found to have been injured as rescue efforts were still under way on Friday to find victims trapped under the rubble.

Politics / Attahiru Jega 2023 Elections Compromised – Jega by Kuginzi: 8:39am On Oct 22, 2023
By Abdulqudus Ogundapo

Attahiru Jega, a former chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says some officials within the electoral commission compromised the outcome of the last general election.

Mr Jega, a professor of political science at Bayero University, Kano, explained that the INEC authorities who compromised the outcome of the election were able to carry out the illegal deal because they were nominated for the positions based on political bargains.

The former INEC chairperson disclosed this when he spoke as a guest lecturer at the two-day retreat organised for senators in Akwa Ibom.

Mr Jega spoke on the topic “Electoral Reform and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria: Review of 2022 Electoral Act (areas for further legislative actions).”

“We have seen, in 2023 elections, the damaging effect of how people in the corridors of power get their client/partisan nominees appointed, without being thoroughly screened, and then they are influenced to compromise the integrity of elections,” Mr Jega said.

Appointment of INEC chair
In his recommendation on electoral reforms, the former INEC chair said for a transparent election to be conducted, the president must not be involved in the appointment process of chairman of the electoral commission and resident electoral commissioners.

Mr Jega recommended that a joint committee of the National Assembly should be given the responsibility to shortlist, screen and confirm nominees for the position of INEC chair and resident electoral commissioners.

Screening
He also said that the Senate confirmation of the electoral appointees should be strict and not the ‘usual take a bow and go.’

"On second thought, and for obvious reasons, I will recommend a joint committee of the National Assembly be given this responsibility, with criteria, for transparency, non-partisanship and stakeholder engagement for the process. The applicants/nominees for these appointments should be subjected to public scrutiny with regard to knowledge, skills, good character and non-partisanship.

"Guidelines should be provided for submitting petitions against any nominee during this process. In any case, the Senate screening process should be more serious and rigorous. Also, there should no longer be the patronizing “Take a bow and go”.

Mr Jega also recommended that the federal government should make INEC completely independent in such a way that it will be able to hire and fire its officials independently without interference from the government.

“Professionalise lower level administrative appointments, including headship of state offices of INEC. In this regard, the appointment of Resident Electoral Commissioners should be divested from the president and given to the Commission at INEC, with powers to hire and fire.

"Once the appointment of Chairman and National Commissioners is sanitised, infused with public scrutiny for integrity and non-partisanship, then the Commission should be entrusted to hire and fire competent and skilled staff for administrative roles at both the headquarters and state offices of INEC. Thus, there will be clear lines of authority and directives, which would prevent the kind of unwholesome situations we have seen, in which RECs pander more to their partisan political bosses who nominated them into office, and ignore the lawful directives of the Commission.”

Political parties
Mr Jega also said registration and monitoring of activities of political parties should be taken away from INEC and entrusted to another federal agency.

“Electoral boundary and constituency delimitation should be reassigned and entrusted to the National Boundary Commission, or such other agency as may be created. Registration and monitoring of the activities of political parties should also be taken away from INEC and entrusted to another federal body/agency.”

The former INEC chair stated that there is a need to review parties and candidates that contest for presidency and governorship elections.

He said, “There is a need to review the manner by which every “Dick and Harry” party/candidate vies for the presidency, and even governorship, making the cost of elections relatively high.

"A legal threshold needs to be provided, which political parties and candidates have to cross, beyond mere registration as a political party, before they can vie for the presidency or even governorship elections. There are models of this in many electoral jurisdictions, that Nigeria can learn from, and adapt to our context.”

Politics / Politics Is The Only Lucrative Business In Nigeria, Says Afe Babalola by Kuginzi: 8:26am On Oct 22, 2023
By Nosakhale Akhimien

The founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola, believes politics has become the only lucrative business in Nigeria.

The legal icon spoke during the 11th convocation ceremony of Afe Babalola University on Saturday, lamenting that education is gradually being relegated to the background with politics taking centre stage.

The ABUAD founder recounted his experience with a first-class graduate who turned down further education after a master’s degree because he saw a secondary school colleague who didn’t go to a higher institution achieve material success in politics.

"I was the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos and a young man came out with first class in Chemistry and had the highest score that year. I called him and said, ‘I am going to give you a scholarship to do your master’s.

“He was very happy and he agreed; he passed his masters. I had forgotten all about him, then he came in and said, ‘Sir, thank you for the scholarship given to me’ and I said ‘Yes, proceed to your Ph.D.’ and he said ‘No’ and I said ‘Why?’

"He said, ‘My colleague who was in class with me in secondary school did not go to university; he is the chairman of the local government of my place. He is riding a car; he has a house.’ I was depressed.

“I said, ‘What do you want to do now?’ He said, ‘I want to go into politics.’ I wept inside me. That is what your country has made of Nigeria. The only business in this country today which is lucrative is politics,” Babalola said.

He said that while he does not disapprove of any political ambitions, he believes that politics has become less ethical and more of personal gain than about serving the public good.

“I do not say you cannot be a politician but to be a politician is different from what we have now. Who thinks that politics is for making money? Politics is for service,” the legal icon added.

“I was a Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor before and I never had a kobo because I saw it as service. People go now to make money from public money given to them.”

According to him, the nation lacks strong leadership and high-quality education.

“Our problem in this country is leadership in Africa. People believe that when they come out of university, they should go and work or alternatively, go into politics,” he said.

“What we need in this country is quality education. When you have quality education, you have power and when you have power, every other thing submerges,” Afe Babalola said.

Politics / Nationwide Hardship: These Challenges Are Temporary, Tinubu Tells Nigerians by Kuginzi: 9:55pm On Oct 21, 2023
President Bola Tinubu says the current challenges facing Nigeria are only temporary.

Tinubu said his administration would do its best to make Nigeria’s economy get better for the benefit of Nigerians.

The president, however, stated that the restoration of the country to its rightful place in the comity of nations requires sacrifice.

He said this during a meeting with a delegation of South-West Muslim faithful, led by Rasaki Oladejo, in Abuja on Friday.

"We have to believe in one country; we have to believe in Nigeria. We will do our best, and our economy will get better for the benefit of Nigerians. I am very sure of that, and we are putting in the work to ensure that.”

“It is about our future. We must guarantee our future. Almighty Allah will not give us a burden that we cannot bear. He has put us here for a purpose. It may look difficult; even rough, but it will get better.

"We avoided it (removing petroleum subsidy) for 40 years. We are all going through the pain now, but for Nigeria not to collapse, we had to remove the subsidy.

“In the history of successful nations, there is nothing more vital than the leadership of a nation taking difficult decisions at the right time and for the right reasons. There would have been no money for the subnationals.”

Tinubu commended the leaders for their prayers and support, assuring them that his administration would empower the youth with skills and create an enabling environment for them to prosper.

Politics / Pandemonium As Correctional Service Vehicle Rams Into Okada Riders In Kwara by Kuginzi: 8:59pm On Oct 19, 2023
Pandemonium broke out at the Oja Oba area of Ilorin in Ilorin West Local Government area of Kwara state on Thursday morning following an accident involving a Hilux Van belonging to the Federal Correctional Service and some commercial motorcyclists known as Okada riders.

The accident reportedly left four people dead while two others were injured.

The accident was reported to have happened at about 8:40 am when one of the correctional service vehicles rammed into some Okada riders at the Isale Oja roundabout while conveying the inmates to the court.

As a result of the accident, the people in the area began a protest during which one of the vehicles in the convoy was vandalised while the inmates in the vehicle were quickly evacuated by the police and kept at the police station ‘C’ division, Oja Oba, for safety.

Though the people in the area alleged that four people were killed in the accident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Frederick Ade Ogidan, who confirmed the incident said that no life was lost in the accident, adding that the victims were critically injured and were receiving treatment in the hospital.

As a result of the confusion, security men drawn from the police and the state service were drafted to the area and condoned off the areas around the palace of the Emir of Ilorin and blocked the roads leading to Oja Oba, Isale Oja, Idi Ape and Ago Markets.

"The incident happened this morning at a roundabout in the Oja Oba area when one of the vehicles of the Federal Correctional Service and some Motorcyclists collided. Four people were involved and were seriously injured and have been taken to the hospital for treatment, none of them has died as I’m speaking now. They are being treated in the hospital and they are responding to treatment.

"The accident was caused by over-speeding and refusal by some road users to give those who are on emergency the right to pass,” Ogidan stated.

Ogidan, however, advised the people to always give vehicles that are on emergency services the chance to pass when driving on the road.

The spokesperson for Kwara police command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, also confirmed the incident saying that six people were involved and were receiving treatment in the hospital.

He said, “Two out of the six people have been treated and discharged from the hospital while four are still recovering.”

The PPRO said that the police had restored peace to the area.

Politics / Stop Wishing Nigeria Fails Because Your Candidate Is Not President – Laycon by Kuginzi: 9:27pm On Oct 17, 2023
Big Brother Naija Season 5 winner, Olamilekan Agbeleshe, popularly known as Laycon, has questioned the behaviour of opposition party supporters in Nigeria over wanting the country to fail because their preferred candidate didn’t emerge as president.

The reality TV star wondered why citizens would wish for their country not to get better because of political differences.

On his X handle, the singer wrote, “Abeg wait to… so there are people (Nigerians, living in Nigeria) actively hoping and praying for things not to get better in this country“

To what end?”

Coming off his tweet was a massive backlash with with many asking him if it was the “prayers and wishes” of opposition party supporters that brought the current economic hardship in the country.

Laycon, in his reaction to the backlash, said he was misunderstood, stressing that the Nigerian leaders are a reflection of the Nigerian people.

He wrote, “I have always stood on the opinion that our leaders are a reflection of who we are as individuals. And as long as we as individuals don’t change, we’ll continue to experience what we give out. Living with the notion that disagreement means hostility and bad intention is wrong.

“I put out a tweet concerning a conversation I had earlier today and the mentions and response to the tweet shows how much some of you do not read to understand before replying. Take a moment and think before talking or typing.

“And yes, I believe our leaders are a reflection of us as a people. We have bad leaders. Yes, but bad people become bad leaders, not the other way around. The everyday people who make life hard for everyday people need only be in power for them to become leaders.

“The fuel attendants during fuel scarcity, the POS attendants during Naira scarcity, if they become leaders what would they do? The ones earning money in dollars, do you think they pray for the exchange rate to reduce or increase? Your super power of criticizing should be aimed at yourself once in a while.”

Foreign Affairs / Israel-hamas War Upends China's Ambitions In The Middle East But May Serve Beiji by Kuginzi: 9:13pm On Oct 17, 2023
WASHINGTON (AP) — In June, Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted the Palestinian president in Beijing and invited the Israeli prime minister for an official state visit. Benjamin Netanyahu accepted, and China was on track for a bigger role in the region.

Then came the Hamas attack against Israel, which has made Netanyahu’s late October trip uncertain and put Beijing's Middle East approach to the test. China’s stated neutrality on the war has upset Israel, but Beijing may gain in the long run by forging closer ties with Arab countries, experts said.

“For a while at least, Beijing’s Middle East policy is paralyzed by the war,” said Shi Yinhong, professor of international relations at Beijing-based Renmin University of China. “The U.S., which strongly supports Israel, is directly or indirectly involved. Who is there to listen to China?”

That hasn't stopped China from trying to be heard.

Its Middle East envoy, Zhai Jun, talked to Palestinian and Egyptian officials by phone this past week, calling for an immediate cease-fire and humanitarian support for the Palestinian people.

Zhai also called Israeli officials to say China “has no selfish interests on the Palestinian issue but has always stood on the side of peace, on the side of fairness and justice.” He said that “China is willing to work with the international community to promote peace and encourage talks.”

Wang Yi, the Chinese foreign minister, came out more strongly for the Palestinians, saying “the crux of the matter is that justice has not been done to the Palestinian people.”

“This conflict once again proved in an extremely tragic manner that the way to solve the Palestinian issue lies in resuming genuine peace talks as soon as possible and realizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian nation,” Wang said during a call with an adviser to the Brazilian president.

China has long advocated for a two-state solution that allows for an independent Palestinian state.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, while traveling in the Mideast over the weekend, called Wang to ask China to use whatever influence it has in the region to keep other countries and groups from entering the conflict and broadening it, according to the State Department, which declined to characterize Wang’s response. China is known to have close trade and political ties with Iran, which in turn supports Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

The conversation was the first high-level U.S. contact with China over the Mideast situation since the Hamas attack.

Beijing, by trying to maintain a delicate balance, wants to position itself as a mediator and exert its influence in the region, said Maria Papageorgiou, a lecturer in politics and international relations at University of Exeter, and Mohammad Eslami, a researcher at University Minho, in joint email.

The U.S. support for Israel will give China an opportunity to expand its arms sales to dissatisfied Arab countries, but China also wants to resolve the crisis to protect its economic interests in the region, they said.

“China’s engagement in the Middle East is set to increase during this conflict. Beijing will play an enhanced role in efforts to end the war and secure its economic interests and wants to capitalize on the Arab states’ frustration with U.S. to establish itself as a great power in the region,” the researchers wrote.

Beijing's approach, though, risks alienating Israel.

Tuvia Gering, a researcher at the Israel-China Policy Center at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, described Beijing's position as “pro-Palestine neutrality,” much like its position on Russia's invasion of Ukraine has signaled support for the Kremlin.

“You cannot be neutral in something like this. Silence is acquiescence,” Gering said. “The problem, I think, the biggest one we have, is that China, instead of being the responsible major power that it claims to be, it is exploiting this conflict for geopolitical benefits.”

He said China was looking to win the support of Arab countries on contentious issues such as Beijing’s treatment of the Muslim ethnic Uyghurs in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

Under Xi, Beijing has pursued a proactive, sometimes assertive, foreign policy. It has sought closer ties in the Middle East, the source of much of the oil China needs and a nexus in the Belt and Road network, Xi’s massive infrastructure-building project to connect markets around the world through railways, roads, seaports and airports and to extend Beijing's influence.

This year, Beijing helped restore diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, building its credentials as an alternative to the United States in brokering peace deals.

Wang Yiwei, another international relations professor at Renmin University, said China is better positioned than the U.S. to help resolve conflicts, whether between Saudi Arabia and Iran, Russia and Ukraine or Israel and the Palestinians.

"If you’re just on one side, and make another side hate you, you cannot be a broker,” he said. “So that's the reason China did not join the West to sanction or contain Russia in the Ukraine war. Because we need to be the bridge.”

But China's proposals to end the war have been seen as benefiting Russia.

In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, “China’s stance might be more about projecting an image of a neutral and responsible global player rather than acting like one,” said Dale Aluf, research director at Sino-Israel Global Network and Academic Leadership, an Israel-based think tank.

China's continued insistence on a two-state solution is “disconnected from reality," Aluf said. China also has displeased Israel by refusing to join the U.S. and other countries in designating Hamas a terrorist organization, seeing it instead as a “Palestinian resistance movement.”

Since the war began, Chinese state media have come down hard on Israel. They have cited Iranian news outlets in reporting the illegal use of white phosphorous bombs by the Israeli military. And they have blamed the U.S., Israel’s strongest supporter, for fanning the tensions in the region.

Bombarded with hostile messages, the Israeli mission in Beijing now filters the comments on its Chinese social media account.

There has been a surge of antisemitic sentiment in the Chinese internet, said Yaqiu Wang, research director for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan at Freedom House.

“On the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Chinese government has always propagated a narrative that places the blame squarely on Israel, a key U.S. ally, because this aligns with a key objective of (the ruling Communist Party’s) propaganda: to undermine the U.S. in the international community. This time, it is no exception,” she said.

Foreign Affairs / There Is No Good Reason Why Israel Should Not Be Under Sanctions by Kuginzi: 11:17am On Oct 15, 2023
Sanctions are used to respond to violations of international law. Israel has violated it many times, so why is it not sanctioned yet?

Last month a parliamentary petition was launched in the United Kingdom, calling for sanctions against the Israeli regime, blocking all trade, especially the export of arms. The petition received more than 386,000 signatures, forcing the UK parliament to debate the topic. The response from the British Government was clear: it stated it firmly opposed sanctions and boycotts against Israel, citing their “close relationship”.

In Ireland, the issue of sanctions against Israel was also brought up in an amendment to a motion condemning the “de facto annexation” of Palestinian land. While the amendment did not pass, the topic of sanctions was brought front and centre.

The momentum for both the petition and the amendment came from the sharp public reaction against the intensified violence the Israeli regime has been inflicting on Palestinians over the last few months, including the most recent Israeli regime bombardment of Gaza in which more than 256 Palestinians were killed including 66 children.

Yet, , the call for sanctioning Israel has long been a focal point of the Palestinian struggle. Indeed, it is a core pillar of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement – launched in 2005 which calls on people to pressure governments into fulfilling their obligations under international law to end Israeli apartheid by imposing sanctions. These can include banning business with illegal Israeli settlements, ending free-trade agreements, curbing military trade, and suspending Israel’s membership in international forums such as United Nations agencies, sports federations, international cultural organisations, and others.

International sanctions were mandated in the League of Nations more than a century ago as a way to deter aggression and war. Since then, they have been enshrined under the international legal regime as an appropriate and effective way for third countries to punish those who violate international law.

example, sanctions including an arms embargo were used against South Africa’s apartheid regime to help end its racist rule over the country. More recently, in 2014, the European Union adopted sanctions against Russia following its illegal annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.

But sanctions have also been used as a form of collective punishment. For example, the United States imposed an embargo on all trade with Cuba in 1962, three years after the Cuban Revolution deposed a pro-US government. It has had a devastating effect on the Cuban economy and people as a whole.

Although sanctions continue to be misused, many still consider them a legitimate tool to counter violations of international law.

As Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, recently told the UN Security Council: “[Sanctions] are a key instrument at our disposal to counter breaches of international law, proliferation of weapons, staunch the flow of arms into war zones … to combat human rights abuses and target those individuals who seek to undermine peace processes … They are designed to bring about change in policy or activity.”

By Borrell’s logic, there is no reason why sanctions should not be imposed on the Israeli regime to hold it accountable for its many violations of international law. Yet the Israeli regime, which has been described as an apartheid one by human rights organisations and is currently under investigation by the International Criminal Court for committing war crimes against the Palestinian people, has faced no such sanctions.

Indeed, it is rather remarkable that even though all Israeli governments to date have been violating Palestinian rights, Western countries which are otherwise quick to sanction those who breach international legal norms have not done so with Israel. Not only that, but the Israeli regime continues to enjoy full diplomatic and trade relations with most of the international community.

Israel continues to be part of media bodies like Eurovision and EU research projects such as Horizon 2020. It also enjoys lucrative arms deals and financial support. The US, Israel’s most generous supporter, has provided it with some $146bn in military and financial assistance to date. European countries have also supported Israel’s military, supplying some €777m ($927m) worth of arms to it between 2013 and 2017.

Clearly, the Israeli regime is not the pariah state it should be. Even the mere suggestion of sanctioning the Israeli regime evokes cries of exceptionalism and bias towards it. Yet sanctions, as outlined in international law, are a legitimate response to Israel’s continuous acts undermining international law. The failure to use them against the Israeli regime makes a mockery of the international legal order and human rights.

Foreign Affairs / Israel-hamas War: Iran Tells Israel To Stop Before ‘it’s Too Late’ by Kuginzi: 10:58am On Oct 15, 2023
By Itodo Daniel Sule

Iran on Saturday warned Israel to immediately halt its “war crimes” against Gaza or it could face “a huge earthquake” of resistance.

More than 320 Palestinians have been killed in the past 24 hours, including many women and children in Israeli air raids on convoys fleeing Gaza City, according to health officials.

The rising death toll comes as Israel continues bombing Gaza a day after telling 1.1million residents to head south ahead of a looming ground offensive following Hamas’s attack inside Israel last week.

At least 2,215 Palestinians have been killed and 8,714 wounded in Israeli air attacks on Gaza. The number of people killed in Israel has reached 1,300, with more than 3,400 wounded. The Palestinian health ministry said Israeli airstrikes had killed 724 children by yesterday, of the over 2,000 Palestinians killed in the past week.

In the occupied West Bank, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in the past week has topped 50. More than 1,000 have been wounded and hundreds arrested.

The Israeli military said it was planning an attack by land, air and sea, according to a statement, but gave no timing or specifics.

Daily Trust on Sunday reports that Israel has warned 1.1m Palestinians living in northern Gaza to evacuate to south; and thousands have been fleeing by vehicles or on foot.

The United Nations has said it is “impossible” for 1.1m Palestinians, about half of the 2.3million people in Gaza to evacuate because there is no place to go.

Meanwhile, BBC Verify has confirmed that women and children were killed when a strike hit their vehicles as they headed away from northern Gaza

This is as thousands of Palestinians sought refuge yesterday after Israel warned them to evacuate the northern Gaza Strip ahead of an expected ground offensive against Hamas, one week after the deadliest attack in Israel’s history.

The alarm has grown over the fate of Palestinian civilians in blockaded and besieged Gaza – one of the world’s most densely populated areas – if it becomes the scene of intense urban combat and house-to-house fighting.

“The situation in Gaza has reached a dangerous new low,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, adding, “Even wars have rules,” he added, stressing that “civilians must be protected and also never used as shields.”

Israel, which has vowed to destroy Hamas, has massed ground forces and tanks around Gaza, dropped leaflets in the north of the enclave telling civilians to flee and staged “localised” raids.

The raids have also sought to locate “missing persons” inside Gaza, the military said, as Hamas has been holding some 150 hostages, whose families have been protesting inside Israel for the release of their relatives.

Al Quds Hospital defies Israeli evacuation order

As thousands flee northern Gaza towards the south, Al Quds Hospital, one of the overstretched health facilities operated by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), refused to follow the orders of the Israeli government that it should evacuate by 4pm local time yesterday.

In a statement posted on the organisation’s X 9, formerly Twitter) handle, the PRCS – equivalent to the Red Cross in many countries – said it would continue with its mandate to attend to the sick and the wounded.

“PRCS-Al Quds Hospital is offering live-saving services to a large number of Palestinian patients and the wounded, including critical cases in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and children in incubators, in addition to hundreds of civilians who took refuge at the hospital.

"Accordingly, PRCR cannot evacuate the hospital, and by its mandate is bound to continue the provision of services to the sick and wounded,” the statement noted in part.

“Accordingly, PRCR cannot evacuate the hospital, and by its mandate is bound to continue the provision of services to the sick and wounded,” the statement noted in part.

North Gaza resident: ‘We prefer to die in dignity’

Meanwhile, it remains unclear how many Palestinians have stayed in northern Gaza after Israel ordered all 1.1million there to leave immediately.

“What we know is that hundreds of thousands of people have fled. And one million people have been displaced in total in one week,” said Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

A Gaza resident, Rami Swailem said he and at least five families in his building decided to stay put in his apartment near Gaza City. “We are rooted in our lands. We prefer to die in dignity and face our destiny.”

An estimated 35,000 displaced civilians have crammed into the grounds of Gaza City’s main hospital, sitting under trees in the empty grounds, as well as inside the building’s lobby and corridors, hoping they would be protected from the attacks.

“People think this is the only safe space after their homes were destroyed and they were forced to flee. Gaza City is a frightening scene of devastation,” said Dr Medhat Abbas, a health ministry official.

With no aid in sight, Gaza doctors warn of humanitarian disaster

Doctors at Shifa Hospital, the largest medical complex in Gaza City, have warned of an impending infectious disease outbreak due to overcrowding.

There are thousands – if not tens of thousands – of people who have flocked to the hospital,” surgeon Ghassan Abu Sitta told Al Jazeera.

“They are sleeping on the ground, in the corridors between patients’ beds. People are absolutely terrified. They think this is the safest place, and everything around them confirms that.

“Unless there is respite there is going to be a public health catastrophe at the hospital,” he said.

Thousands of Pro-Palestinian protesters march in UK, US

Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters yesterday took to the streets across the United Kingdom (UK), including in London and Manchester.

In London, more than 1,000 police officers were deployed as crowds marched from the BBC’s New Broadcasting House to Downing Street.

The Met Police said seven people had been arrested, including one for criminal damage and two for public order offences.

The protest came a week after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel.

Similarly, thousands of people also marched in New York City to support Palestinians and raise awareness about Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip.

Sports / My Parents, Grandparents Are Nigerians' - Arsenal Product Confirms He Wants To P by Kuginzi: 8:59pm On Oct 14, 2023
Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Nathan Tella has confirmed that he granted an interview to the German media in which he stated that he would love to play for the Super Eagles.

Tella was born in England to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to play for the 1966 world champions and three-time African champions.

The exciting winger had always leaned towards playing international football for the Super Eagles over his country of birth, but has yet to be invited to the Nigerian teams.

Tella will bring his versatility to the Super Eagles if handed a call-up by Jose Peseiro as the Bayer Leverkusen star is also comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder, second striker and centre-forward.

The 24-year-old knows some of the Super Eagles players currently in Portugal including fellow Hale End grduate Alex Iwobi, Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo and Victor Boniface, his teammate at Bayer Leverkusen.

When asked to confirm reports that he has decided to play for Nigeria, Tella told German-based Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba of OmaSportsTV: "It's true it has come from me. A couple of years ago I spoke to my family about it and said that's the route I wanted to go down and to play for Nigeria.

"I've been doing well, hopefully I can get into the team and then if the call-up happens I am more than happy to accept it as something I want to do."

On the rationale behind his decision to commit his international future to the Super Eagles, Tella said: "I feel like it has always been a big part of my life obviously.

"Like I said in the interview I'm a London boy. I've been in London, I have been in England but at the same time my parents are Nigerians, my grandparents are both Nigerians so for me I feel it's the right route to go down.

"I want to do something which makes my family proud as well. I know they are happy with me doing football but for being in Nigeria as well I think that's another big thing for me."

After a banner 2022-2023 season at Burnley that saw him score 19 goals in all competitions, Tella was acquired by Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window.

Foreign Affairs / Israeli-palestinian War: US, Nigeria, Others Demand Ceasefire, Scores Killed by Kuginzi: 10:19am On Oct 08, 2023
GODFREY GEORGE and GIFT HABIB

The European Union, Russia, the United States and Nigeria, among other nations, have called for ceasefire and dialogue between Israel and Palestine over the renewed outbreak of hostilities between both countries, which began on Saturday.

The health ministry in Gaza revealed on Saturday that at least 250 Palestinians had been killed in Israeli air attacks launched after a Hamas offensive against Israel killed at least 200.

Six others (two in Ramallah, one in Jericho, one in Qalqilia, and two in Hebron), according to Aljazeera, have also been killed, with more than 50 injured in the West Bank.

This brings the number to 450 as of the time of filing this report.

A tally by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society noted that another 126 Palestinians had been injured.

Thirty-three were hit with live ammunition, 10 injured by rubber-coated bullets, 69 treated for teargas inhalation, five injured by shrapnel, eight were physically assaulted and one was stabbed by an Israeli settler.

The growing casualty toll on Saturday came after the Palestinian group running the Gaza Strip launched the largest attack on Israel in the year, Aljazeera reports, infiltrating areas in the south of the country following a barrage of thousands of rockets fired from the besieged territory.

Israel’s national rescue service on its part said at least 200 people were killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years.

Sunday PUNCH gathered that an unknown number of Israeli soldiers and civilians had also been seized and taken into Gaza.

Earlier on, Israel’s Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, warned Hamas, saying that it made a “grave mistake” in launching the attack, which began at 6.30am local time (03.30 GMT) and involved barrages of rockets fired from multiple locations in Gaza as well as fighters infiltrating Israel by land, sea and air.

“Citizens of Israel, we are at war. The enemy will pay an unprecedented price,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video message from military headquarters in Tel Aviv, sighted by Sunday PUNCH.

Israel’s military launched a series of air raids on Gaza in response to the attack. “Dozens of [Israeli military] fighter jets are currently striking a number of targets belonging to the Hamas terrorist organisation in the Gaza Strip,” he said.

Israel’s military said the commander of the Nahal Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Yonathan Steinberg, was killed by Hamas fighters in southern Israel.

The brigade is the main infantry branch of the Israeli military.

The military said on X that Steinberg was fatally shot near Kerem Shalom as he was responding to a gunfight between his brigade and Hamas fighters.

A member of the Israeli Knesset, Danny Danon, on Saturday, said it would “not be easy” for the people of Gaza tonight.

“I can tell you tonight that the people of Gaza will have to take into consideration that they will have to pay a price and we will advise them to take steps to avoid any casualties,” the former UN ambassador told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv.

“We will be efficient, and we will do whatever it takes to hunt them [Hamas] down,” he stated.

In an attempt to broker peace, the Russian foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, on Saturday, in a statement called on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to implement an immediate ceasefire.

We call on the Palestinian and Israeli sides to implement an immediate ceasefire, renounce violence, exercise the necessary restraint and establish, with the assistance of the international community, a negotiation process aimed at establishing a comprehensive, lasting and long-awaited peace in the Middle East,” Zakharova noted.

Also, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, in a statement sighted by Sunday PUNCH, said, “This horrific violence must stop immediately. Terrorism and violence solve nothing. The EU expresses its solidarity with Israel in these difficult moments.”

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, said Hamas contributed to “the intensification of violence”, adding that Israel “has our full solidarity the right, guaranteed by international law, to defend itself against terrorism.”

The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, assured his support for Israel, saying, “We’ll make sure that they have the help that her citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves.

In this moment of tragedy, I want to say that the United States stands with Israel. We will not ever fail to have her back. We will make sure that they have the help that their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves.

Politics / INEC Seeks Support From Traditional, Religious Leaders For Credible Governorship by Kuginzi: 7:36am On Oct 08, 2023
Ahead of the off-season November 11 Governorship election in Imo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has solicited the support of traditional leaders and faith-based groups toward the conduct of a violence-free and credible electoral process in the State.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sylvia Agu, who made the plea at an interactive meeting with religious leaders in Owerri, said the meeting became imperative in view of their roles in guiding their faithful to enthrone good governance.

She urged the attendees to help ensure that the election is conducted in a fair and impartial manner, free from violence or other disruptions.

“Help us to revive the hopes of the people, mobilise your members against voter apathy, and tell them what we are doing to get the process back.

“You have the capacity to engage them and turn them into patriotic citizens.

"We request that you partner with INEC in sensitising and encouraging your members to actively participate in the election process, from PVC collection to voting on election day and protecting their votes in line with electoral guidelines,” Agu said.

She stated that the final day for collection of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) is October 9, and urged those who have not collected theirs to visit their local government offices to do so.

However, residents of Orsu council area should visit the INEC office in Owerri due to security concerns in the area.

According to her, the commission has taken inventory of all non-sensitive materials and sorted them by registration area.

She further noted that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines have arrived in the state and are being prepared for the election.

She added, “To ensure early arrival of election material to the polling units, the commission has insisted that Registration Area Camps (RACs) must be activated so as to reduce the travel time of election staff and materials on election day and ensure early commencement of voting.”

Agu further assured the people that the sabotage witnessed during the general elections would not repeat itself, saying that adequate preparations had been made for the transportation of materials and training of ad hoc staff.

"INEC meant no harm. We did our best in the last elections, but we are still asking for your continued prayer for our country and with God on our side, we will succeed,” she said.

In response, the General Secretary, Christian Association of Nigeria, Imo chapter, Mr Sunny Odoemene, urged INEC to ensure proper preparations to discourage voter apathy.

Odoemene also appealed to the commission to ensure that results were pasted at every polling unit by electoral officials before leaving, to check electoral malpractices.

Politics / Floods Loom In Adamawa, Bayelsa, Kogi, Others As Cameroonian Dam Releases Water by Kuginzi: 7:15am On Oct 08, 2023
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted Nigerians to expect floods as Cameroonian authorities release water from the Lagdo Dam.
The agency noted that nine states could be affected by the recent release of water from the dam, which is expected to last till the end of this month.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Director General of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, during an emergency meeting where he gave an update on the release of water from Lagdo Dam and the consequential flooding of communities along the banks of River Niger and River Benue.

The states that may be affected are: Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states.

Ahmed said the recent release of water by the dam has led to the displacement of 48,100 persons in 13 states of the federation and could lead to the destruction of crops and other infrastructure.

He added that since August 14 when the dam was opened, 28 deaths have been recorded and 159,157 persons have been affected.

The NEMA DG called on all heads of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to cushion the effects of the disaster.

He said: “NEMA has been alerted on sudden increased inundation of riparian communities and farmlands along the banks of River Niger in Adamawa, Taraba and Benue states in the past 48 hours.

"The sudden situation is attributed to the rapid release of waters from Lagdo Dam in the Republic of Cameroon and has resulted in the displacement of several inhabitants of the affected communities.

“Furthermore, croplands and valuable infrastructure are at risk of getting washed away by the flood waters. Situation reports from Adamawa State confirm the upsurge of flood waters along the flood plains of River Benue.

"The situation is expected to be replicated in downstream states of Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta and Bayelsa as the River Benue joins River Niger and flows to the Atlantic Ocean through the Niger Delta.”

The agency cautioned authorities of state and local governments along rivers Niger and Benue basin areas to immediately activate their emergency response plans to avert potential damage and losses that will arise due to the flooding of communities.

"I want to use this opportunity to alert authorities of state and local governments along rivers Niger and Benue basin areas to immediately activate their emergency response plans to avert potential damage and losses that will arise due to inundation of communities by flood waters,” he said.

NEMA promised to give further updates as it expects to receive updates from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), NIMET, NEMA Operations Office in Yola Adamawa state, and from State Emergency Agencies of the frontline states.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Israel declares war readiness as Hamas springs surprise multiple attacks by Kuginzi: 9:03am On Oct 07, 2023
ISRAEL AND OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES

Amnesty International takes no position on issues of sovereignty or territorial disputes. Borders on this map are based on UN Geospatial data.

Israel’s continuing oppressive and discriminatory system of governing Palestinians in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) constituted a system of apartheid, and Israeli officials committed the crime of apartheid under international law. Israeli forces launched a three-day offensive on the occupied Gaza Strip in August during which they committed apparent war crimes. This compounded the impact of a 15-year ongoing Israeli blockade that amounts to illegal collective punishment and further fragments Palestinian territory. Israel escalated its crackdown on Palestinians’ freedom of association. It also imposed arbitrary restrictions on freedom of movement and closures that amounted to collective punishment, mainly in the northern West Bank, ostensibly in response to armed attacks by Palestinians on Israeli soldiers and settlers. The year saw a rise in the number of Palestinians unlawfully killed and seriously injured by Israeli forces during raids in the West Bank. Administrative detentions of Palestinians hit a 14-year high, and torture and other ill-treatment continued. Israeli forces demolished al-Araqib village in the Negev/Naqab for the 211th time. A further 35 Palestinian-Bedouin towns in Israel were still denied formal recognition and residents faced possible forcible transfer. Authorities failed to process asylum claims for thousands of asylum seekers, and imposed restrictions on their right to work.

Lucky Obukohwo

A Moroccan, Mr. Eddahmani Abdelileh and his wife, Rihab Gwayed, a Tunisian, have arrived Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria on bicycles after spending 11months on the roads cycling through some Africa countries.

The couple said they decided to embark on the expedition to mark their honey moon having met during one of their cycling outings which eventually resulted to their marriage last year.

Mrs. Rihab who spoke on behalf of his husband said they have been hearing about Nigeria and based on that, they decided to include the country as one of the Africa countries to tour.

She said they never wanted to think of the risk involved in coming to Nigeria despite all the bad things they have been hearing about the country but to their surprise, what they have been hearing, turned out to be the opposite adding that Nigerians are hospitable and accommodating.

The tourists said the Nigerian delicacies that have caught their fancies are “Fufu and Egusi soup”

The tourists who tied their tenths and other cooking utensils on their bicycles said whenever they are tired and wanted to pass the night, they simply make use of their make shift tenths.

Rihab who said that their cycling started in December 2022, added that they have toured 11 countries and that their intention is to tour all the Africa countries using the bicycles.

“Morocco was the first, Maritenia, Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Guinea, Nigeria.

"First of all, it was a passion for us to travel and cycling, we combine two passions together and we also like to explore our continent as we are also Africans and we don’t know enough about Africa only in the news or in the media you hear about it and we don’t really see the real side of Africa. It was for us like curiosity to know more about it.

“So, we want to come here and see with our eyes, live with the people around here and see how are their cultures too”, Rehab said.

Receiving the tourists who were briefed that the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council is one of the safest place to pass the night, the chairman of the council, Festus Alenkhe welcomed the tourists and assured them of their safety.

Foreign Affairs / Isreali Police Arrests US Tourist For Destroying Two Roman Artifacts by Kuginzi: 8:33am On Oct 07, 2023
By Salome Maji

In a negative outturn of a supposedly fun-filled event, the Isreali authorities have arrested a US tourist for destroying ancient Roman statues dating back to the 2nd century in a Jerusalem museum.

According to Times of Israel reports, the 40-year-old tourist, who was arrested Thursday, considered the artifacts to be “blasphemous” and “in violation of the Torah.”

Meanwhile, management of the museum also disclosed that the two artifacts destroyed by the tourist were kept in the archaeology wing.

Images from the scene showed scattered pieces of one of the sculptures on the floor, with the other bearing a severed head.

Reacting to the incident, head of the Isreal Antiquities Authority, Eli Escusido, said, “One statue is a marble depiction of the goddess Athena that was found in excavations at Beit She’an in the 1960s.

“The second was of the mythological creature Griffin, who was the symbol of divinity in the Roman pagan era and found in the Negev.

“This is a shocking case of destruction of cultural heritage. We view with great concern the fact that religious extremists take such action.”

The museum, in their statement, said, “This is an unusual incident.

"We condemn all forms of violence and hope such events do not happen again.”

Authorities have commenced investigation into the case.

Crime / Blind Herbalist defrauds 86-yr-old woman of N19m, sleeps with her daughter, gran by Kuginzi: 8:02am On Oct 07, 2023
An 86-year-old woman is currently battling to retrieve N19 million from a blind herbalist who allegedly defrauded her under the pretext of healing her child and making money rituals for her, reports Head of Investigation Desk, KUNLE AKINRINADE.

The desperate attempt of an aged woman to prevent death from snatching her children has landed her in trouble. The 86-year-old woman identified simply as Madam Alimot had 15 children, but they were snatched by death one after the other until she was left with only three.

When one of the remaining children was also hit by a strange illness last year, the octogenarian woman began a frantic search for healing. In the process, she stumbled on a weekly programme on a popular radio station based in Ogun State, where a blind herbalist was advertised as a man with mystical powers to heal the sick and see visions about people’s life problems.

Consequently, Madam Alimot, who lives in Mowe area of Ogun State, visited the herbalist, Owolabi Adefemi a.k.a. Ojunu after taking down the his phone number and address, at his home in Ogijo, another community in Ogun State, for a solution to the sickness that had seized her daughter.

Unknown to her, she had walked into the dragnet of a fraudster. Adefemi was said to have told the woman that death was hovering around her household and could only be averted through an atonement requiring a sacrifice with a cow.

The desperate woman promptly provided the amount requested for the sacrifice, setting off a chain of subsequent requests for additional money for unexpected sacrifices that gulped a princely N19 million.

By the time the scales fell off from the eyes of the woman and her children, she had sold her two buildings while her daughter and granddaughter had warmed the herbalist’s bed several times.

The homeless aged woman and her children are now left to cry for justice and a refund of the money the herbalist allegedly defrauded them of.

She said she had noticed that rather than giving her a concoction for the treatment of her daughter’s illness, the herbalist kept saying he could make her rich after making some sacrifice with cows and other expensive items.

Alimot said: “He said we were taking the big cow to Agbara and later changed it to Mowo area of Badagry.

"We were asked to enter the house with our back to the door, and we saw a well-built young man on the floor. He said the cow we gave him money to buy had turned into a man.

"We were shown plenty of cash of different denominations stuffed in a sack.

"Babalawo Ojunu (Owolabi Adefemi) and one old man called Agbaakin, who we met in the building, then said that we could not take the money because we did not come with the third person. We left the place without the money.

"When we went back to him, he also did not give us the money. Instead, he said the money would just appear in my house with at night.

"Later, he said a monarch in Ile-Ife, Osun State had summoned him over my matter and that a sum of N2 million was needed to pacify the monarch.

“We ended up paying him the sum of N5 million on that day, but he never gave me any charm for my sick child and the child has not died contrary to what he said to cajole me to sell my houses and give him the proceeds of the sale.

"I sold the house I had built with N9 million for N5 million and gave him the money. I also sold another house and gave him the money, totalling about N19 million.

“I want to collect my money from Owolabi Adefemi a.k.a. Ojunu and Nigerians should help me because I don’t have anywhere to call home anymore.

Politics / MC Oluomo: Why Peter Obi Lost 2023 Election, Odumodublvck Explains by Kuginzi: 9:26pm On Oct 06, 2023
Rapper, Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu aka Odumodublvck has explained why the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi could not win the February 2023 poll.

He expressed confidence in the fact that Obi would certainly have won his 2023 presidential bid if he had the popular road transport union leader, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo in his corner.

He said that people like MC Oluomo confronted situations and would go any length to ensure events turn out in their favour.

According to him, anyone who hoped to clinch the seat of power must necessarily have people like MC Oluomo on their side, adding that to save the country, one needn’t wait to be given power but to take it.

The Def Jam Recordings artiste stated this while addressing claims about his single “MC Oluomo” during his mixtape listening party on Thursday night in Abuja.

He explained that though the song title is the same with the transport boss’ name, it was however a means to achieve an intended result.

He said: They started insulting me that I’m singing for MC Oluomo, idiots! Declan Rice is not about Declan Rice, idiots! MC Oluomo is not about MC Oluomo, idiots!

"I, myself, I was on the other side of politics; I was supporting Peter Obi. But I cannot even lie, if Peter Obi had an MC Oluomo, we would have had a chance.

“Person wey be say when dem dey win us for the ballot box, e go say, ‘Come on, una mama. Scatter am!’

“That is what we need to save the country. Power is not given, it is taken. Whatever you are doing in your life, have MC Oluomo in you.”

Politics / Peter Obi: Don’t Use Our Money To Sponsor Labour Party Operations, Abia Youths by Kuginzi: 10:09am On Oct 02, 2023
Omeiza Ajayi

Youths under the aegis of Abia Youths Interest Group AYIG have warned the state governor, Alex Otti against attempts to use state resources in sponsoring Labour Party operations and the court case of its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.

Mr. Otti is the only serving governor on the platform of the opposition Labour Party LP.

Peter Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election is legally challenging the victory of President Bola Tinubu.

At a news conference Sunday in Abuja, leaders of the Abia Youths Interest Group said if the state governor funds the LP presidential case, it will have negative effects on the economy, welfare and development of the state.

They challenged the governor to make public, the cost of various contracts execution in the state.

Henry Chigozie who read a prepared text on behalf of the youths, said the funding of Peter Obi’s case has led to the retrenchment of about 10, 000 civil servants in the state, thereby depriving Abians of the dividends of democracy.

However, the state government had recently denied sacking 10,000 civil servants, saying only those who were employed between December 2022 and April 2023 were shown the exit because some of them were ghost workers while others who were illegally employed and their appointment letters criminally backdated, were thrown out.

He said; “We, the Abia Youths Interest Group, the national umbrella body of all progressive youths of Abia irrespective of political affiliations, have observed with dismay the following dangerous developments, that if not immediately checked will plunge our dear state into avoidable socio-political crisis and financial quagmire:

"That Mr. Alex Otti is (among those) funding the Presidential Court case of Mr Peter Obi leading to massive retrenchment and sack of citizens thereby depriving Abians of the dividends of democracy. So far, in less than 3 months, over 10,000 Abia workers have been retrenched. This is unacceptable.

"In Otti’s Abia, transparency and accountability have been relegated to the background. No one knows the costs of projects nor contractors working on projects in Abia.

"That Mr Alex Otti is creating crisis and instigating political unrest in Imo state thereby creating political instability in the South-east. By asking a sister governor to immediately write his handover notes, such unguarded and reckless statement which is capable of creating disunity amongst these states, can also lead to crisis amongst unsuspecting citizens.

"“In view of the foregoing we wish to draw the attention of the nation, well-meaning Abians and the relevant security agencies to these sinister activities and urge all concerned to take necessary steps to ensure that the interests of our great state and nation are not jeopardized.”

Also speaking, spokesperson of the group, Dr. Stephen Ukpai Ukwa, said the Labour Party-led Abia government should bear in mind that the youths of the state are watching and will resist any act that will endanger the wellbeing of Abia people.

"Mr. Governor should know that Abia youths will resist any act that will cause problems between us and the President of Nigeria. We will resist any act that will endanger the lives of Abia people. So, any act that will lead to the mismanagement of Abia state funds should stop forthwith.”
