Phones / Re: No Data Limits On New Mtn Nigeria Simple Surf Internet Subscription Plan by KunleA2(m): 7:14am On Apr 05, 2012
MTN Simple Surf: My story

I live in California and was in Nigeria last year for about 9 months on business trip. Left in December and came back in March this year. I am saying that to let you know that i have something to compare Nigeria network to.

I revolve between ibadan (Oyo) Lagos and Ijebu Ode (Ogun State). My business depends mostly on the internet stuff. i buy and bid (live) for cars online.

So data cap and speed is very crucial to me. I have tried mostly all available networks: Glo, Multilinks, Etisalat, Starcomms, etc.

Different ones are good in different areas. Multilinks is better (then) in Ogun. Starcomms in Lagos/ibadan and Etisalat.

The issue i have with Etisalat when i came back this March is the data limit. i went thru 250mb (N1,000) in few hrs nightly.

I tried the Simple surf and its has been great in ALL my areas. Ogun, Oyo and Lagos.

I have even watched video online and make calls to the US over the net (especially late at night) from my flat in Ibadan. If there is a problem or a cap on the simple surf, i am yet to see it. There have been slow connections sometimes and just yesterday, the connection kept logging off everytime i log on. i just took out my multilinks modem and finish the job. Hours later, its fine

i can only call it like i see it. i have no loyalty to any network but the one that's good to me.

By the way, i use glo for all my calls cos they charge N9/min to call the US. MTN charges a LOT.

Criticism should be based on PERSONAL experience.

Thanks

also i have gone tru the website- there is no place they ask for bank account details

Let me clarify myself. If you must register with salvage auction company directly (copart, IAAI), they will need your Bank info on file. However, companies like Ridesafely and Auctionexport are agents. They can bid for you.

Their standard practice is for them to ask for between 10 - 25% of intended bid. Supposed you plan to bid $2,000 on a car, they will bid for you if you deposit like $200 (10%) or more. If you win, you pay all necessary fees (minus the $200 deposited) If you did not win, you get your money back.

If suppose you ask them to bid and you win but did not pay, the deposit on hand will be needed to pay the auction house the fine for backing out. Auction houses will fine you everytime you did not pay when you win.

That is what auction house are trying to guard against in the 1st place if you register directly with them when they ask for bank info.

i hope i have made myself clear.

You can reach me at: kunleautos(at)yahoo.com

OR (call/text) 0705-477-3686. I am presently in Nigeria.

Anything is possible in Nigeria. i will advise you to look for a trusted mechanic and make him buy it with guarantee. So if something goes wrong, you can make him responsible.

if you buy it and there is a problem, then its YOUR problem!
Autos / Re: I Need A Usa Car Auction Website To Bid For Auction Cars by KunleA2(m): 6:37pm On Apr 01, 2012
Actually you can register as a bidder even if you live outside the USA. But there is a catch. The process is long and you have to have bank info set up so that you can pay them.

Once you make a bid, its a commitment. They have to be sure that there is a way for them to collect. They cannot allow people to come and bid and walk away without paying. it wrecks the whole process.

Also, you have to worry about trucking and shipping the car when you are done buying. Trucking and shipping in on itself is a whole totally different ballgame. It can get REALLY complicated quite fast.

You are better off finding someone to bid on your behalf and pay them to handle all the logistics. I know you are trying to save as much as you can but not at the expense of you possibly losing more in the long run.

Buy a car in the wrong location and watch your potential savings go up in smoke. And we are not even talking about possibly buying the wrong car yet.

As much as i can bid for you, i will like you better still, to try:

www.ridesafely.com

www.auctionexport.com

They will require a deposit from you before bidding on your behalf though.

Good luck in your bid.

dawgy: I am interested...N700k? I hope it would get to calabar safely?

Sorry 700k wont cut it. Not this condition and LAGOS cleared. Lagos clearing runs about N220k itself. Will make it anywhere. At 61k true mileage, its barely broken in. So many worse off cars are making the trip.

Thanks for the offer though

This is a rare find for a 1994 Toyota Camry. V6 Engine. Very immaculate throughout. Engine so clean, you can eat on them. Check out the belts, Hoses and Clamps. I can bet you, its one of the cleanest you have ever seen!!! Bar none.

And yes, its still rolling like off the assembly line in 1994!!!!

I acquired the vehicle thru a dealer friend in the U.S with a damage to the drivers side door. Door changed and its immaculate again.

Computers / What's The Best Internet Connection In Ibadan? by KunleA2(m): 8:47pm On Mar 25, 2012
Hello Forumites,

From personal experience, which internet connection will you recommend in Ibadan. I reside in Challenge / Felele Area.

I came to town about 3 weeks ago, i used Starcomm (not good as i used to know it) Multilinks has also been TERRIBLE (i am using it right now)

Etisalat is good (but sometimes switch between 3g and GPRS) When on 3g its cool but otherwise its pain.

My main gripe is the Data Cap limitation. I usually exhaust the 260mB (N1,000) in one night. I have refilled 4 times since i arrived. 1 @ N4k, 1@ N2k and twice at N1k each

Hoping to try the MTN Simple surf plan tomorrow (No data cap) but not sure how good they are.

Looking for people with personal insight to share.

Thanks
Computers / Re: Internet Speed Rank In Africa; Ghana 1st & Nigeria 9th by KunleA2(m): 8:27pm On Mar 25, 2012
Ghana is surely making its strides. i was surprised when i visited about 2 yrs ago. The cell phone service is great and MUCH CHEAPER than Nigeria. Not to mention RELIABLE!

I haven't visited lately to test their internet services compared to Nigeria (with extensive use from the US as my background) it will be nice to know the difference.

I am certain that i will be impressed. I remember that we go to cybercafe all day everyday to watch Nigerian movies on youtube without any delay. We pay like 1 Ghana Cedi for like 1hr 30mins.

Power is quite much stable too in the Accra area. While it goes off occasionally, WE DID NOT SPEND THE NIGHT IN DARKNESS FOR THE ENTIRE 2 MONTHS I SPENT THERE. If there is power failure, the maximum is 4hrs and by 6.30pm or 7pm its already back

I am not sure of any cybercafe in Nigeria where you can do that without any issues.

Way to go Ghana. Proud of you

chucky234:

Imagine one lousy mouth saying I dont know what anything about car import when I have two accounts with top auction companies in Canada.
I said you can ship a car from US to Lagos for as low as $800 and one literate-illiterate asked if from Senegal or Port Harcourt.
You can buy a clean trouble-free 2003 EOD in US for $6,000 if you are buying directly from the owner and not from dealers or sub-dealers and N1,050,000 is enough to keep the car at your showroom in Lagos, why then you dont want to sell for N1.3m?
People sell their cars in US for different reasons, not every car you find cheap has problem.
The best way to buy a car from US is by buying directly from the principal owner,I told him my friend sold his car a nicompoop said I dont know what my friend does in the US when I was talking of a white American man who have used 6 cars in the last 4 years and sold 5 of them at very cheap prices.
If you are making a N100,000 from a car thats more than enough profit for a single car sold but no Nigerian dealers always want to make a fortune from selling a car, this attitude will never help you.
there are so man good guys out there who sell their cars at reasonable prices and those unscrupulous element will go about telling buyers that cars sold at such rates are faulty cars.
Lets be sincere with ourselves and call a spade a spade, there are good cars out there going for N1.3m

Autos / Re: Cant Someone Get A Good Car Deal On Nairaland? by KunleA2(m): 4:35pm On Mar 05, 2012
SimonTemp:

I'm not a dealer, but i've bought a car on NL before, and I've also sold one. And i follow the auto section.

My experience leads me to this conclusion:

Dealers
Only a few dealers are reliable, trustworthy and reasonable. I've seen dealers advertising Nigeria used cars as Tokunbo. I've seen Mileage rollbacks. I've seen cars with history of 3 accidents been advertised as clean title. My conclusion is that it is better to use a reliable dealer with a good track record, then ask for a breakdown of the cost of the car,(if you are importing) - then do an on-line search yourself and compare the prices. If the dealer's price is reasonable, negotiate a bit more before settling for the deal. And have everything documented and signed by both parties.

Buyers
Nigerians just love cheap stuff. No wonder the Chinese have flooded our markets with cheap, sub-standard stuff. Most of just look for a cheap bargain when looking for car.

More often than not, if its cheaper than usual, there's a catch that will come back to bite u. If you want to buy a Tokunbo car. Go online and search, check autotrader, yahoo autos, ebay, carsforsale.com. Get the average price, not just the cheapest, then add at least $3500 (Trucking, Shipping, Clearing, Dealer's fees) to the cost of the car. This will give an idea of what the price should be in Nigeria.

@Kuntash
For argument's sake, please go and inspect that car, get VIN and do a VIN check. Also take your mechanic along. I can guarantee you that one of this will be the case:
-Nigerian used been sold as Tokunbo
-Stolen Car
-Serious Mileage roll-back
-Serious accident or damage

I couldn't have said it any better.

Thanks Wonderz for ur post,

ehen, who says a 2003 honda cannot be boughty with 1.3M?

I am sure this one was stolen or maybe accidented or , not legit,

http://www.tradestable.com.ng/lagos/cars/Tokunbo_Honda_accord_end_of_dicussion_18001.htm

Looking at the pics, if you notice the front tire with the front fender, something doesn't look right. However, with more pics and VIN we can check on the validity of the 50,000k miles claim.

Good luck

kuntash:

which means, it is fixed! thats vague I must say!

imagine you that just gave conditions or rather exceptions to buying that car @ 1.3M, now u say its not possible?

dont u think there could be enough people that falls into that category of just selling off?

I dont know if its still there,  there is currrently a red 2003 BMW 330 series on www.autotrader.com ,  read thru what the seller said as d reason for selling the car. I think it was less than $3k USD . I tell u bro, there are lots of people willing to sell @ rock bottom price,

also note, there are people who know how to bargain very well in yankee and knows the secret of these biz, its a free market.

I am sure u would even agree with me that people patronize ur neighboring country to buy cars lately due to reasons stated by the poster

You are mixing apples and oranges. The used car value of a BMW is NOT the same as Honda Accord. Also, if you think all deals on autotrader or cars.com are legit, you are in for a rude shock. i bet you have never lost your money before. Most of the fake ads will not have a phone number or will have email and the jerking around begins. You really want a good 2003 BMW 3301 for less than $3k? Think again.

You can bargain here but its not like naija that you get a product for half of what the seller was asking. NOT here.

You can post the link to the BMW for all to see.

And don't forget the poster is looking for 03 Accord. In case you see one that will sell for under $3k, kindly post it here too. Since you are the only one that know how to search.  undecided

Without running a check, its hard to know. A possible culprit is the fuel pump relay. Even with a good fuel pump, a bad relay will still give you a bad result.

Run scan to prevent you from running from pillar to post.
