rabstyle: It occurs to me that you are looking for something that is too old at a price you probably wouldn't find. The harder it is to find a car, the more expensive it will be. Unless you want to do your legwork and go to Cotonou yourself to look for them. Be prepared to pay more for them. No one will be running pillar to post for vehicles you probably price down outrageously. If you are using them for a project be ready to go to every length in finding them. Kinda know why you need the cars, they are very reliable and easy to work on. Also put the pics of the cars you are talking about. I was wondering which Jetta is not "normal"? There is NO Hiace buses available in the USA. It was never sold here. The only ones you can get is Chevrolet/GMC Savana Buses as earlier mentioned. Those buses are very rugged. They are used mostly here for Airport shuttle buses. They last well too. However if you are going to use it in Nigeria, make sure you give it to someone that knows how to repair them when the time comes. If you are going to be in an area where you won't be able to find a qualified mechanic to keep up the chevy/GMC vans, i will advise you to stay with Hiace. They are much cheaper than hiace at the moment. Average hiace will cost you about N2m or so. I have a chevrolet bus in Lagos at the moment. I am asking N1.2m. The pics are attached. [b] With that said, i personally think that the reason for the ban on importation of tires in Nigeria is either political or to protect the budding tire industry in Nigeria (which is fine). Likewise the way cement was banned from being imported in bags. Only in bulk. It was mainly political (paddy-paddy system  ) to give the big guys total control of the country's cement business. (I think they are trying to reverse that cos of acute shortage of cement.)Back to the tires, i will rather buy a good quality name brand tires instead of these Chinese-made tires of low quality. Although new, they don't always support the weight they are rated for. Hence lots of blowout and accident. Since there is no govt regulations or consumer watchdog of any kind in Nigeria, its everyone on its own. These are tires in the name of "Brand New", yet they don't last long at all or worse still unsafe. The ply(s) are not accurate, so is the treadwear or load ratings. In the US here, if you are around the salvage/dismantling business for a considerate length of time, you will notice that there are lots of near new tires that just installed on vehicles for few months before car was involved in accident. There is nothing wrong in buying those. Its sold all the time here and you can save money buying them. The importer has to be aware that since they are banned, its a risk trying to bring thru Cotonou and you can lose your goods.[/b] Nigerian consumers are way more sophisticated. There is no way to hide a bad tire no matter how much washing or painting you put on to it. If you bring worn out tires, you will be sorry, no one will buy it. If you have to bring it in, make it good ones and remember its still a risk. You might lose your container. Otherwise, carry go. Lots of people can't afford new ones anyway. And as for me, i will rather buy a good brand used tire before a no-name brand new one. |
