https://thelead.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Hajiya-Aisha-Jummai-Al-Hassan.jpg The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Aishat Al-Hassan has condemned the abduction and forced child marriage of a 13 year old girl, Ese Oruru. Ese was allegedly kidnapped by one Yunusa in Opolo, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, in August, 2015 and renamed her Aishat on arriving Kano state. The Minister and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made this known on twitter handle on Monday. Her words: “Our laws are very clear on the case. Ese Oruru is 14 and as such cannot consent to marriage. Any such union she’s in is illegal. “I have been in touch with the police authorities in Kano over Ese’s immediate release to her parents and we are making progress. “I can assure you that I will use all my powers and influence as a Minister and woman to secure the release and return of Ese Oruru. “Ese is still a child under our laws, and her right to freedom of movement is subject to parental control. She must be returned. “Child Rights Act says no person under 18 is capable of contracting a valid marriage, and a marriage so contracted is null and void. “The Act also clearly states that anyone who marries a child is liable to a fine of N500,000 or 5 years imprisonment or both. “No culture, religion or personal conviction supersedes the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Ese Oruru must return home. “My ministry is on this case and we will ensure full prosecution of anyone who is found to have contravened the law.” The Minister further noted that Ese’s case has brought to the fore the need to protect the rights of children and women in our society, stressing that her ministry will not relent. “I assure you all that Ese Oruru will be released & reunited with her parents without further delay. All hands are on deck for this,” she maintained. My ministry is on this case and we will ensure full prosecution of anyone who is found to have contravened the law. #FreeEse — Sen Jummai Alhassan (@JummaiAlhassan) February 29, 2016 I assure you all that Ese Oruru will be released & reunited with her parents without further delay. Ifeanyi Ubah, managing director and
CEO of capital oil, has claimed victory
for the gains experienced by the naira
over the past two days.
Speaking on Channels TV programme,
Ubah had said that if consulted, he could
restore the naira to 200 against the
dollar in just 30 days.
“Look at the economy, look at the position
of the naira today; some of us have ideas
on how we can restore this,” he had said.
“Do you know how many Burea De
Change people who food has been taken
out of their families because of this? If
you say they are the ones causing it, then
where are you today?
“It needs strategic management. It won’t
take me one month, if you give me part of
that consultancy, naira would come back
to 200. I can bet my life with it, naira
would come back to N200. If you call me
for that consultancy, I would put naira
back to 200.”
After his comments, the naira was quoted
at 370 to the greenback on Monday, and it
rose to 364 on Tuesday morning, closing
trading hours around 340.
Arguing that the currency is recovering
due to his efforts, he said in a statement
on Tuesday: “Fellow Nigerians, I wish to
thank you for the support and
encouragement you have given me so far.
It has been unprecedented.
“As at this evening, the Dollar has
dropped further to N310 as against N390
on Sunday evening before my interview
on Channels.
“This shows that the earlier increase has
been artificial as some people were
manipulating and benefitting from it. They
will all be fished out in due course so that
Nigeria will be better and the suffering of
the masses will end.
“With God and our sincere efforts, even
when we have not been fully consulted,
the Dollar can still be brought down to
N200 and below. Let the discourse
continue. Shun the Dollar till it’s N200.
Pray for Nigeria and let the Dollar go
down to N200 and below.”
Independent investigations by TheCable
show that “big companies” are shunning
dollars on the parallel market, reducing
demand, consequently leading to an
appreciation of the currency. https://www.thecable.ng/.Vsy2BGeG_Qw.twitter |

Addressing the unions and allies before the match began, the leader of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Aliyu Wabba, said the increase was outrageous and should not stand. “From 14 Naira per unit to 28 or 26 Naira. This increase is outrageous. When it subsists this time around, be sure that it will continue and the exploiters will continue to exploit us. “This is the message that we are taking to all these agencies. “We are also going to the National Assembly because they are the true representatives of the people. They feel our pulse and they represent our various constituencies and therefore they must stop all these by making laws that will actually protect the people. “Law should be made to protect the people and not encourage exploitation,” he told the gathering. Multiplier Wffect The NLC leader also pointed out that the increase was the fifth in a roll since 2012. The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Aliyu Wabba, requests that Nigerians should get pre-paid meter free of charge Mr Wabba believes the increase will have a multiplier effect on the Nigerian economy, with manufacturing companies having to pay more for power. “The increase is going to affect manufacturers, Medium and Small Scale Enterprises and even consumers. Every consumer must be provided with meter because people should be able to pay for what they consume and not to pay for darkness,” he stressed. The labour leader also accused electricity companies of deliberately refusing to provide meters for consumers and using estimated billing system to exploit Nigerians. “This should stop,” he insisted. The increase in electricity tariff was announced by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and it kicked off on February 1. Organised labour said that the protest had become necessary after all efforts to make NERC shelve the idea of electricity tariff increase failed. According to labour, the due process in the extant laws for such increment was not followed in consonance with section 76 of the Power Sector Reform Act, 2005. Organised labour also believes that there has been no significant improvement in service delivery. “The fact is that most consumers are not metered in accordance with the signed privatisation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of November 1, 2013, which stipulates that within 18 months gestation period, all consumers must be metered,” the organised labour said. A statement by the labour unions said that the Abuja rally would start at Labour House, Central Business District at 8:00a.m local time, before moving to the NERC head office at Adamawa Plaza, Plot 1099, First Avenue, Off Shehu Shagari Way, Central Business District http://www.channelstv.com/2016/02/08/labour-unions-in-nationwide-protest-over-electricity-tariff-hikes/ cc Lasticlala |
