According to the United State Dept, in 1984 Assistant Secretary Linda Thomas-Greenfield was serving as a Consular Officer in Lagos, Nigeria, when an artist named Tunde Odunlade came to her window seeking a visa to the United States.

Thirty-two years later in Washington, DC, Mr. Odunlade recognized the Assistant Secretary when they were both panelists for a discussion on the Chibok girls in America.

He recently visited her at the U.S. Department of State and he brought along some of his artwork. He also thanked her for approving his visa three decades ago.

I have really observed this trend, especially with people that graduated with a 2.2 grades and below, they would smartly omit their grades when preparing their CVs. For instance a 2.2 graduate is most likely to write "second class (honors)" instead of "second class honors (lower division)" on his CV. My question is why is this so? Since if eventually u are being called for interview u would definitely be asked. I believe recruiters would most likely sideline ur application because of this omission. What do u think?

What would you have done if your were below 2.1, Is this thread necessary in the first place? Or would rather d person dump his CV BC of 2.2. I am not encouraging mediocrity but some 2.2 are way better than 2.1,...

Science/Technology / Re: The Dangers Of Staring At The Sun As Mercury Transit Tomorrow May 9. by kwyllancy: 8:06am On May 09, 2016

What you need to Know as the incredibly rare celestial event which will see Mercury appear in front of our home star.

This rare astronomical event which occurs just 13 times each century will pass in front on the sun tomorrow Monday May 9, 2016. But it's not one of those event you rush out to view, because anyone who stares at the sun as the tiny black spot makes its journey past the sun risk permanent damage to their eyesight.

This relatively tiny planet will begin its journey past the sun at just after midday in most parts of the world.

It will then be visible as a tiny black spot as it spends 7.5 hours "transiting" our parent star.

According to NASA "Due to its diminutive size, viewing this event safely requires a telescope or high-powered binoculars fitted with solar filters made of specially-coated glass or Mylar."

The transit of Mercury will be observable across the whole of Western Europe, South America, the eastern part of North America, West Africa, and the western region of North Africa.

Mercury is the planet which is closest to the sun and is named after the famous "winged messenger" of Roman mythology.

See the transit path of the celestial event below:

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: FG Takes Over Recruitment Duties From Teaching Hospitals by kwyllancy: 7:58am On May 09, 2016

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has declared that henceforth recruitment of staff for teaching hospitals will be done centrally by the Ministry of Health once in a year.
Adewole declared this while responding to a request made by the Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) Prof. Etete Peters on Saturday when he visited the hospital.
Peters had told the minister that lack of funds had made it difficult to recruit 141 staff members approved by the Federal Government.
He said that lack of funds had prevented the hospital from recruiting staff, in spite of waiver granted to employ staff of various cadres mostly nurses and resident doctors.
Peters, who decried the shortage of staff in key specialties, sought the Minister’s permission to recruit consultants in Neurosurgery, Chemical Pathology, Dental Surgery, Endocrinology and Pathology.

“The hospital is currently facing dearth of staff following massive retirement of nurses and other staff.
“The challenges facing the hospital range from paucity of funds, inability to complete the ongoing infrastructural projects to the provision of more medical equipment,” the CMD said.
He listed uncompleted projects in the hospital to include Radiology Services Block, General Outpatients Block, Laboratory complex, School Block and Theatre Building.
Peters also complained that facilities in the 520 bed hospital were over-stretched and as such the hospital needed more funds for expansion projects.
Responding, the Minister promised to look into the 2016 budget for the hospital with a view to ensure the completion of the ongoing projects.
Adewole said that he would like to inaugurate the General Outpatients Building within the fiscal year so as to give the hospital enough space for Accident and Emergency Unit.
He commended the Akwa Ibom government for announcing the release of N100 million for the completion of the General Outpatients Building out of the N150 million required.
The minister commended the CMD for maintaining services in the hospital in the face of lean resources and called for improvement.
He said that the 2016 budget was very tight and promised that more things would be achieved for the hospital in 2017 budget.
Adewole said that the recruitment of house officers in Teaching Hospitals would be done centrally from the Federal Ministry of Health once in a year. – The News.

Crime / Re: Injured Armed Robber Escapes From Hospital (photo) by kwyllancy: 7:49am On May 09, 2016

An injured armed robber is currently one of the most wanted men in Ghana after his daring escape from a heavily guarded hospital in Sunyani, Ghana. 21-year old suspected armed robber, Kwaku Yeboah, who was under a 24-hour guard at the Sunyani Regional Hospital managed to outwit a security guard and escape.

Yeboah was arrested for robbing a trader, Madam Kate Sam Wilson at gunpoint at Ohene Djan, a suburb of Abesim, near Sunyani on May 2, 2016. Yeboah and his accomplice who is currently at large, came to the lady's shop with a motorcycle. They parked the bike a few meters away from the lady's shop, before attacking and taking her handbag containing GH2,500 and other items at about 7.30pm that day.

Luck ran out on Yeboah when an 18-year old boy who witnessed the robbery laid ambush near the motorbike and attacked Yeboah with a big stone.

Yeboah, who was riding the motorbike and wielding a gun, fell off the bike. Yeboah's accomplice immediately took to his heels while Yeboah started struggling with the boy. A mob quickly gathered and Yeboah would have been lynched if not for the police's timely intervention. The criminal was rushed to Sunyani Regional Hospital because of the severity of the injuries he sustained as a result of the assault and was placed under a 24-hour guard. His jaw was broken.

He escaped on Thursday by tricking the police constable guarding his hospital room. The victim, Kate Wilson, on learning of yeboah's escape, expressed fear and serious concern over her life and business. The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command has given the police constable that guarded Yeboah a 10 day ultimatum to find him or face the full wrath of the rules and regulations of the Ghana police service.

Health / Re: Bennet Ifekandu-Omalu Honored By Xavier University For Discovering Brain Injury by kwyllancy: 9:35pm On May 08, 2016

Nigerians continue to get all the recognition they deserve abroad, the latest being the famous doctor, Bennet Ifekandu Omalu, the man who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (or CTE) after he conducted autopsy on former NFL player Mike Webster.

Yesterday, Ifekandu took to Twitter to announce that he has received a honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Xavier University in Louisiana in the United States, for massive contributions to science.

Bennet Omalu ‎wrote.....

'Got Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Xavier University of Louisiana today. I am deeply grateful and thankful'.

The school detailed his battles with the NFL which tried to discredit his earlier discoveries, Omalu’s refusal to back down, and finally gaining the attention of Hollywood’s Ridley Scott, who proceeded to work on a feature film telling Omalu’s stories with Will Smith starring as the doctor.

Last December, Concussion, the true life story of Omalu’s battles hit the cinemas, with hopes that it would draw attention to the link between the football head injuries and early onset of dementia that could lead to death, and more importantly, how this has continued to be a bone of contention within the NFL. Finally, in March, the NFL admitted that there’s link between football and brain damage.

Now, Omalu is gaining all the recognition he deserves, and as he said on Twitter, “Got Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Xavier University of Louisiana today,” he wrote, adding, “I am deeply grateful and thankful.”
