The visa delays are nerve wracking and depressing I must confess. I got my visa 2 weeks shy of losing my scholarship, and 4months post application.(happened last year).
I've come to see it is a general problem. Asides them tightening immigration laws, they are overwhelmed or rather inadequately prepared for the tons of applications. Maybe it is deliberate, I do not know. But it is not just targeted at Nigerians. My German colleague got a post doc renewal for one year. She submitted her application since January and hasn't heard from there. She is stuck, as she can't leave the country untill a renewal, so she hasn't seen her loved ones as she would have wanted, two years running . My Malagasy colleague on the other hand got his in 3 months (they both applied from South Africa as they had already landed the previous year and got contract extensions)

I advise anyone who wants to apply for a study visa in particular to do so at least 6months ahead. Even that isn't a guarantee.
Even if you go to the embassy (like I did in frustration), you may not gain access, and you will return home angry.
You may gain access and they'll still ask you to go and wait like I was told.

All the best guys

Hi @Greenhold, kindly ignore this fellow and his mentality. One of the biggest advice I've been given is to make use of my SA study visa and travel round the world, get my passport stamped. I am working on it. My friend here has been to at least 4 countries including the US and Europe on her SA study visa.
I am very sure that it's the normal visa backlog, and your visa will be out soon. Welcome to South Africa (in advance..lol)

Meanwhile, that daddy guy and pufframmy, is it impossible to ban them from this visa thread? They never have any help to render or any thing good to say, always insulting SA and mocking people with Visa troubles.

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a female roommate. The apartment is a secure complex and the room is large, with double furniture to accommodate 2 people comfortably, dedicated cleaners, wifi and water. Rent and electricity is split by roommates and is very affordable (should be R3,300 PM all inclusive).
This is ideal for UCT/CPUT Postgrad students as it's in Rondesbosh.
Kindly send me a DM, let us escape this Capetown's exorbitant rent.

P.S: mature person o, and someone who like me, doesn't like wahala

I thought of this, then I remembered that big brother is a DSTV program, and DSTV is a South African company. So it made sense how that was possible in such a short time. Holding on to people's passports for so long is still unfair though.

BTW I gave 15k rands for naira. Who is interested??
Lion123:
Big Brother Naija ended on October 3. Meanwhile, some of the participants who were finalists (and who have never visited South Africa before), were able to get visas to visit South Africa -- because one of the South African High Commission's agents in Abuja has some ambassadorship dealings with a couple of the BBNaija finalists. So, in less than a month, these people were able to apply for a visa and get it.

Very well said.

It was nauseating to see people defending Ill behavior, telling horrible lies to drive home their point and cussing out the same people accommodating them, and whose visa they are dying to have. We are our own problem. If you call internet fraud hustle, you're a despicable person!!

We like to cry foul and blame the government. We forget that the government is actually a reflection of who we are. The average Nigerian is just waiting for his/her turn to take a piece from the national cake. And you expect South Africans not to protect their own space by shutting you out?
They already have a lot of problems to deal with, you shouldn't be part of it!!
Untill we do some introspection, we will continue to get this treatment being meted on us.

Somandla:
The empty arrogance of most Nigerians beats me. As a professional who has lived in SA for 22 years, I have seen over the years how the reputation of Nigeria has gone down, thanks to the unending fraudulent activities of a lot of Nigerians. Drugs, internet fraud, and fraud in general.
In SA, senegalese people own shops and boutiques, I know Ghanian people who own good businesses. Manufacturing of products that occupy the shelves of chain stores. I have lots of friends who are building contractors and still continue to make good money doing clean legit businesses. Not to talk of lawyers, accountants, doctors etc.
The issue is that the Nigerians who do clean businesses and ply their profession are in the very very minority.
I as a Nigerian get panic attacks going into johannesburg cbd. If those Nigerians all over hillbrow are what Nigerians are made of, then I think South Africans are actually very patient.
Why do Nigerians find it soooo difficult to be part of a progressive society.
And please if you think white in SA like Nigerians, then you need a reality check. Whites are not willing to participate in addressing past injustices that the apartheid government did. They would make friends with anyone who speaks evil of the locals. Whites are hardly your friend...wake up!
Their distaste for you might be subtle..but don't get it twisted....who are you
If you are from Ghana, your SA visa application can be done online and an approval sent to you online, if you are from Benin republic, you do not need a visa to get into SA and I am sure it's like that with so many other African countries.
Instead of us introspecting, we cry foul...talk of jealousy...call indigenous people lazy...yet the evil that we do live with and after us.
Nigerians...., start by changing your orientation, to by pass the laws of a land and undermine it, is not smartness. To go to people's country and become human traffickers, drug dealers and internet fraudsters is not hardwork.
It's destroying those countries and creating problems for other well meaning Nigerians who want to migrate and be a progressive part of other societies and those who want to genuinely visit and explore other countries.
South Africa has its own problems...and has the citizens fight to rescue their country from high crime rate, employment and greedy politicians, Nigerians should not further burden their system or make the hurdle harder .
Dubai is an example... people would take steps to preserve their country..
African brotherhood should not destroy, it should build.

Hello everyone, I'm new here.

First of, thank you to every contributors here, I read from page 600 till here and I've learnt new things together with what I had researched, nonetheless, I still have further questions.

1. How much (or range) do I have to have in my account to show proof of funds for student visas?

2. How much (or range) is the medical insurance for student visas too? If you could pls add some examples, it'd be helpful.

3. About the Police report, how can one get it? Do I just walk into any police station and request for it or it has to be an headquarters or somewhere else? If there's an example of a place, pls suggest. I stay in Ibadan so I can work with Lagos too.

4. On the Medical report, can it be together with the Radiological report too or separately? Name of health centers I can do that too? (Price range pls?)

5. I have read about accommodation reservation here but I didn't see any website, can someone help with that too?

6. Finally, for the Birth certificate, will the one from NPC suffice?

Pls keep in mind my questions are for student visa. Thank you so much. I look forward to the replies.

This is untrue, and quite misleading. It's not in our hands who gets the visa or not. I was delayed for over three months even with a legit admission letter, a bursary attached to it and up to date documents. The requirements for a visa are on their website and except you have issues with your proof of accomodation, finances..you're most likely on the right track and everything else lies in the hands of the person approving or disapproving.

I got mine after series of mails and follow up from my supervisor.
Let's just say you're one of the very lucky few!
GazaQueen:
Submitted my application (visit visa) for my mom and I on the 4th of March this month and we got our passports back on the 19th of March. NB: I sponsored her application and attached the required docs. SA visa is the easiest to get once you know what you’re doing or how to go about it. wink

I booked a return ticket cos I thought I could get BTA with it. Well, banks no longer give BTA. I was also happy I booked return as the airport people kept asking for my return ticket.
080bjaked:

You don't need return flight ticket for Study visas but you may not be able to apply for Personal Travel Allowance without it.

Get your accommodation sorted and a copy of your admission letter ready for the immigration officers and ofcourse tip money for naija immigration dudes if you aren't cut out for long stories. grin

Safe trip.

Those ones at the airport kept hounding me about return ticket, and asking what I was travelling for, even when it was clearly a study Visa.. Thankfully I booked a return ticket. My residence was paid for by my supervisor, see why I say she is an angel yea.
LOquence:
wow! Congrats. I have been given my study permit too(uct)..haven't traveled though..
What questions was asked by airport authority?was the temporary residence paid for? Did you book one way or round trip?
Sorry for asking so many questions..

I don't know what worked, prayers, my supervisors follow up mails, or calls to vfs officers to help forward my appeal to the embassy. Every mail I sent I copied my supervisor and she kept sending them reminders.funniky I never got replies, but they always sent her replies.

I arrived Capetown yesterday, 15th merch 2021. I got my visa on the 4th of March, and had applied since November 27th 2020.
In all of this, I've been lucky to have an amazing supervisor who stood by me through delays and almost losing my scholarship. She even picked me up from the airport and shopped groceries for me. A real angel.
I'm in a temporary residence close to UCT, I'll be here for two weeks.i will commence my house search this weekend. You can use gumtree website to search for accomodation. The accomodation here is really expensive generally.
I have also been able to begin the bank account opening process.

This thread was really helpful to me. I will be glad to answer questions or help anyone who needs Information.
Cheers.

Submitted my application on January 27th for study visa, Abuja centre. Received text and email today that my passport is with the courier and ready for dispatch. Approximately 4weeks. Although, I don't know the outcome at the moment but it's a full scholarship at wits. Best wishes everyone.
