deltadegre: Boss you are my senior colleague but i would still want to stress my point because though the kind of school you attend matters but i think for any medical school to be accredited by council they must have reached the minimum qualifications like staff as well as teaching hospital. Boss for you to advice somebody to fill a school only because they have carried out a successful kidney transplant that i think its a fallacy, let me prove my point before you gained admission to uniilorin i dont think they had any breakthrough in kidney transplant. if that is the yardstick to measure a medical school then i dont think if schools like UNN, UI,OAU,UNIBEN to mention but a few big name would be advice able to do medicine cos they are yet to record a breakthrough in kidney transplant but those it mean these schools are not good enough ?. Big Boss i would rather you advice these upcoming ones to consider schools that have full accreditation not name. you and i know that studying medicine in nigeria is not something really to write home about, you claim you school have neurosurgeons, how many of your colleagues can carry out neurosurgery?. all we need as medical students in nigeria is to graduate and go to a better country to get specialized in something very good. Some times last two years i read from the news paper the registrar of medical and dental council of nigeria lamenting inadequacy of medical staff in the country he said it himself that we have only 9 resident neurosurgeons in nigeria where as only Sheffield university in london has 15. let me use this opportunity to wish you success in you final MB i hope immediately after your graduation you would go abroad to good countries to advance in you study then you would reason back all i have said if you are studying in nigerian the surviver of you ways is in you hand not the school, though the school has its part to play but we need do ours. once more SUCCESS

boss,i really understand what you are saying, and i am not saying my school(unilorin)is the best in the world..... well, maybe i misunderstood northern teaching hospitals shaa....

i really wish to travel to the north, cos i love their culture and way of life, really have to see things for myself....

deltadegre: i still repeat myself lets leave all this big name schools what is important is your personal determination that really counts trust me school only give you an edge but if you dont develop urself you would have yoursef to blame after graduation. if you doubt m ask practicing doctors

Now let me tell you something...

If you want to be a good doctor, you need to attend a good medical school, where there are seasoned lecturers, well equiped practical labs with good instructors, and a wide variety of specialties!!!

If there is NO neurosurgeon, plastic surgeon or even an orthopedic surgeon in a teaching hospital, then you need to be careful...

BTW, why do some teaching hospitals still refer to others for kidney transplant or MRI scan

That's the only way you can develop yourself!!!

Obinnau: erm pls let me add some thing which some of us jambites may need to know from u. What are the performances of most federal universities in the core north? Are they as good as their counterparts in the other regions? Schools like UDUSOK, UNIMAID UNIJOS ETC

The only university that I trust in the north is Ahmadu Bello university, zaria. Then maybe Bayero University, kano.....

If you're opting for Uni-Ilorin, First let me ask you "Are you a muslim?" From my observation admission to that school have something to do with your religion, Grades, connection... (i am not saying they don't accept other religions too oo, but the percentage difference is wide).

I think you may be wrong... In my class for example, the ratio of christians to muslims is roughly 1:1.5, which is just a narrow margin, religion has nothing to do with medicine, moreover our provost is a christian...

Like I said, unilorin needs 240 jamb, about 70 post jamb and strong connections, with powerful prayers that's all...

Since you chose unilorin as first choice, you have to work hard in your UTME, cos the cut-off mark is 240 there... Post jamb is also there...

And, you must have a lot of connections, cos admission is now competitive, first come first serve...

You see, it all boils down to the nigerian system of running the health sector, where everybody believes "the doctor is the one and only expert" so who wants to employ an "ordinary" BMS graduate...

But they are very wrong!!! In the USA, BMS 1st degree holders are called to work in hospitals...

Anatomists test nerve function, muscle tone and power, dermatomes, etc,

Physiologists calculate ventilation/perfusion ratio, perform nerve conduction tests, and if you don't believe this, THEY ARE THE ONES THAT SET UP ECG, EEG, EMG ETC....

The only work doctors do there is mainly clinic work...

But here in 9ja tiwa n tiwa.....

1. Most of thos graduate don't even know the course before they got admmitted, they never had proper orientation about the course.

2. BMS is not for First degree Holder! If you think you're going to get a fancy job in some big hospital after a first degree in anatomy or physiology, bch, bros, thats pure fantasy! BMS is for people that desire to put in their time to discover and add to the knowledge of medicine.

3. B.sc, B.tech, this is just the stepping stone to what BMS is all about, upgrade yourself, get a second degree, third degree perharps.

4. I'd like to correct the notion that every BMS graduate most become a lecturer for them to get a good job, you're very wrong, below is analysis on how you can make the best from your BMS degree.

A). Study for a second degree in Public Health: With such degree, the sky is your limit,

B). Study for a second degree in you initial field, with such level of education, you're opportuned to apply for reseach grand and set-up your own lab.

C). Enterprenureship: Start your own Business. Funeral home is a very good business, if you actually knew what you were taught in school.

D). Write Professional Exams in HSE courses, coupled with your BMS degree, then you're good to fo.

E). Study for PhD, and become a consultant for different companies (Pharmaceuticals especially)

Do you know that in the United state MD is a second degree? Not a first degrre? You must have a bachelor degree, before you can apply to medical school.

It is the right time that our peopl learn that it's actually not about the money that you earn from your job, it's all about the impact that you can make. </p>

Emzybrown: sir, its very encouraging that you show interest in laboratory medicine which is quite laudable,but in nigeria as an entity were things are not done as it suppose to be,with my observation of health care services both private and government hospitals establishment,as a doctor specializing in hemat or chem path or pathology, it is usualy not lucrative and their is minimal job satisfaction when compared to other areas lik gynae.i know so many pathologist having some element of regret cos yu cant compare them with the bigwigs in obsteric n gynae or maybe paediaterics and otherz,what is your take on this?

It all depends on your personal interest, and as a doctor, you are paid the same salary... Whether you are a gynae, hematologist or a gastroenterologist!!!

The only people paid higher salary are radiologists, neurosurgeons and anaesttiologists, because of "hazard allowance" (these dudes are REALLY EXPOSED TO A LOT OF HAZARDS, and they spend more time in the hospital)

So it doesn't matter, cos we all contribute towards saving a life!!!

I am not doing it because of the money, its all to save a life...

well, I want to know what is really wrong: is it his reading pattern, or he goes to parties/clubs or he has a lady molesting his life, or he always goes to fellowship/ assalatu
