Politics / Re: No Hope For You At The Supreme Court – Umahi Advises Peter Obi by Laheelow(m): 10:30am On Sep 10, 2023
CharleyBright:
Oga Dave Imahi, Biko eat your cake quietly, but let it not choke and humble you too soon ( cos it eventually will).

And let me ask you, if Tinubu had lost at the Tribunal, what would have been your advise to him? You would have told him he shouldn't appeal?
Atiku is also heading to supreme court, why haven't u advised Atiku not to do same?
Peter Obi name kee u there!!

Though I don't see the supreme court upturning Tinubu, but let Atiku and Peter Obi go and contest the judgement again.... At least that aspect that say INEC has liberty to determine how it wants to transmit result. That is unacceptable.

I went to vote because the electoral law mandate INEC to transmit results electronically, and INEC told us severally they would transmit electronically.
No corrupt rag-tag judges should turn the rules upside down and drag our electoral process backward.

But the same Supreme Court has already ruled in the case of Oyetola vs. Adeleke that INEC is at liberty to determine how to transmit the result.

Bola is good in politics only but zero in good governance. No wonder he tried to steal Obi 's manifesto and blueprints during the election period.

You are a liar just like Naanu himself. Obi was the last person to come out with his manifesto. He was practically forced to come out with one after he was lambasted for saying he doesn't need a manifesto to govern.

Politics / Sanusi Exonerates Tinubu From Nigeria’s Economic Woes, Blames Previous Administr by Laheelow(m): 3:21pm On Sep 05, 2023
In a recent virtual religious event, the former Emir of Kano and ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammadu Sanusi, chose to exercise restraint when it came to criticizing President Bola Tinubu over the ongoing economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

Former Emir of Kano and ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammadu Sanusi, chose to exercise restraint when it came to criticizing President Bola Tinubu over the ongoing economic challenges faced by Nigerians. During the event, he diverted from the religious theme to remind the audience of his stance on the poorly managed economic policies of the previous administration led by Muhammadu Buhari.
Subsidy removal, a correct decision Sanusi expressed that the prior administration had neglected his advice on how to steer Nigeria out of economic turmoil. He contended that those well-versed in economics would recognize that the current administration made the correct decision by discontinuing the fuel subsidy to safeguard the country from the financial abyss created by the past regime. country from the financial abyss created by the past regime. He stated, “I have, over the years, talked about the impending crisis, given the current economic hardships. Any economist who has studied monetary policy in the last eight years knows that Nigerians would find themselves in this challenging situation.” Sanusi cautioned that the hardships Nigerians currently face might be just the beginning if the appropriate measures are not taken. He highlighted that similar economic predicaments had occurred in other nations, such as Germany, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Venezuela. Nigeria lived beyond its means in the last 8yrs Sanusi asserted that while he was not absolving President Tinubu of any wrongdoing, the blame for the present economic difficulties should not rest on his shoulders. He emphasized that during the past eight years, Nigeria had been living beyond its means, accumulating substantial foreign and domestic debts. The Central Bank of Nigeria alone had accrued over N30 trillion in debt, leading to debt servicing surpassing 100 per cent. It is unjust to blame Tinubu He further stated, “I can’t join other Nigerians in criticizing Tinubu for the current economic hardship. I am not saying he is faultless, but in this current economic situation, President Tinubu is not to be blamed. I will also speak out if I observe any detrimental economic policies in Tinubu’s administration in the future.” “It’s injustice for anyone to blame the Tinubu administration for the current economic hardship because there is no other alternative than the removal of the fuel subsidy. After all, Nigeria cannot even afford to pay the subsidy.”

Politics / Election Tribunal: First-time Voters Blackmailing Presidential Tribunal – Falana by Laheelow(m): 3:10pm On Sep 05, 2023
Human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, SAN, has said that those attempting to blackmail the judiciary to give their political candidate a favourable verdict are “first-time voters.”.

He made this statement while featuring on a programme on Channels TV on Monday.

According to Falana, this is the first time the judiciary will be witnessing “such level of intimidation and cheap blackmail”. He questioned why the judiciary is being pressured with what he referred to as “cheap blackmail” when anyone can still appeal to the Supreme Court if they don’t agree with the tribunal’s decision on Wednesday.

Speaking further, the human rights lawyer said the judges will deliver judgement based on the evidence presented before the court, and not some random intimidation from social media influencers.

His words,

‘We have been having election petitions since the colonial era, but none has attracted such level of blackmail and intimidation of the judiciary,

“I am worried that people give the impression that everything ends with the judgment of the court of appeal.

“Any party that loses on Wednesday still has the opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court. So, what is the basis for the cheap blackmail that is going on?

“Some of the people involved are voting for the first time and they believe rightly or wrongly that their candidate must be declared the winner and I think that is what is going on”.

Politics / Nigeria Maintains Largest African Economy For The Fifth Year In A Row by Laheelow(m): 8:48pm On Jul 21, 2023
Nigeria maintains largest African economy for fifth year in a row as Egypt catches up.

Nigeria remains the largest African economy with a nominal GDP of $477.4 billion.
The top three economies accounted for 49.5% of the African continent’s economy.
Angola recorded the fastest growth, while Zimbabwe contracted the most.
Egypt is catching up with Nigeria with a GDP of $476.7 billion.
Nigeria maintained the position of the largest economy on the African continent for the fifth consecutive year in 2022, with a nominal GDP of $477.4 billion.

The giant of Africa, as it is mostly referred to, accounted for 17.4% of the African economy in the review year ($2.7 trillion).

This is according to data released by the World Bank. Nigeria has topped this list since 2018 when it overtook South Africa as the largest African economy. According to the World Bank, Nigeria’s economy grew by 8.3% year over year in 2022 from $440.8 billion recorded in the previous year.

Egypt followed with a GDP estimate of $476.7 billion, having recorded a 12.3% growth in its GDP from $424.7 billion in 2021. In third position was South Africa with an estimate of $405.9 billion.

It is worth noting that the top three economies on the continent account for almost half of the continent’s economy (49.5%).

Other countries that made the list of the top 10 largest economies in Africa include Algeria ($191.9 billion), Ethiopia ($126.8 billion), Kenya ($113.4 billion), Angola ($106.7 billion), Tanzania ($75.7 billion), Ghana ($72.8 billion), and Cote d’Ivoire ($70 billion).

Egypt is however catching up with Nigeria on the list of largest economies on the African continent after the northeastern country expanded by 12.3% to $476.7 billion, almost levelling with Nigeria. Egypt surpassed South Africa in 2020 as the second-largest African economy and has remained in that position to date.

Fastest growing economies

On the list of fastest-growing economies on the African continent, Angola topped the list with a growth rate of 62.5%. Specifically, the GDP of the central African country increased from $65.7 billion recorded in 2021 to $106.7 billion in 2022.

According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), the growth was spurred by sustained high oil prices, which averaged $100.65/barrel in 2022.

Sudan followed with a growth rate of 50.9% as GDP grew from $34.2 billion to $51.7 billion in the review year. Zambia recorded a growth rate of 34.5% to stand in third position, while Guinea was the fourth fastest growing with a nominal growth rate of 31.9%. Seychelles grew by 23.4% to $1.59 billion in 2022.
On the flip side, Zimbabwe recorded the highest contraction of 27.1% as its nominal GDP dropped from $28.4 billion to $20.7 billion. Ghana followed with an 8% contraction, while the GDP of Sierra Leone dipped by 6.6% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the continent’s economy expanded by 3.8% to $2.7 trillion from $2.5 trillion recorded in the previous year, despite different headwinds, which impact most economies on the continent, ranging from high inflationary pressure, fiscal deficit, and high debt amongst others.
What they are saying

The African Development Bank has said that Africa is poised to become the second-fastest growing region globally in 2023, following Asia, underscoring the resilience of its economy in the face of numerous global shocks.
However, the attainment of this projected growth hinges on both global circumstances and Africa’s capacity to enhance its economic resilience, as indicated by the 2023 African Economic Outlook report by the African Development Bank.
The report, unveiled by the regional bank, predicts that Africa will strengthen its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to a 4.3% increase in GDP growth in 2024, up from 3.8% in 2022. It further highlights that 22 countries are expected to achieve growth rates exceeding 5%.
It, however, recommended robust policy actions, including incentivizing green industries, and providing guarantees at scale to de-risk private sector investments in managing natural capital across the continent.

Politics / Issuing Our Passport To Nigerians Dent Our Reputation, Says Italy-based Ghanian by Laheelow(m): 6:30pm On Sep 01, 2022
By Biodun Busari.

An Italy-based Ghanaian man, Matthew Quaicoo has said that the issuance of Ghanaian passports to Nigerians will make his countrymen lose their reputation in oversea countries.

Quaicoo who is reported to be an evangelist in Italy, then, asked Ghana’s foreign affairs to stop issuing the country’s passports to Nigerians residing in Ghana.
The Ghanaian who had lived in Nigeria but now works at an international airport said this after his encounter with a Nigerian lady who could not pronounce Takoradi, a Ghanaian city properly.

According to GhanaWeb, Quaicoo also found out that the Nigerian woman could not speak Ghana’s Fante language, which made him describe her as ‘fake’.

“I met her last Sunday. I asked her where she comes from in the Igbo language, and she said Aba. I lived in Nigeria for a while, so I can speak the language. But I saw the Ghanaian passport and asked how she got it. The lady said she’s half-Ghanaian.

“According to the lady, she comes from Takoradi, but she mispronounced it. Then I asked how she was doing in Fante, and she was confused. That was when I realised she was fake,” Quaicoo said.

He said he did not proceed to ask her more questions because his job does not allow arguments with passengers. He said by the time he could explain to the Italian immigration, the lady had left the vicinity.

He said further, “The passport was the biometric one, meaning she has the Ghana Card too. So, I called the Ghana embassy here and inquired about her. They told me that it happens a lot, and they seize them whenever they come to renew them. That is all they can do here, but the problem comes from those in Ghana.

“Ghanaians may lose the reputation we have abroad. They will tag us fraudsters like some Nigerians. Italians know that Ghanaians are hardworking, but some Nigerians do illegal stud here.”

APC running mate: Christian groups disagree with Babachir, Dogara, others
August 1, 2022

By Ibrahim Hassan-Wuyo

Christian groups in the North under the aegis of Arewa Coalition for Good Governance has said that the hardline position of former Secretary to the Federal Government; Mr. Lawal Babachir, former Speaker Dogara and Senator Ishaku Abbo over issue of the All Progressives Congress, APC’s choice of Muslim-Muslim ticket was based on selfish interest.

According to the group, their anger was premised on the fact that none of them was picked as running mate and not on issue of Muslim-Muslim Ticket as was being projected .

“At a time when all critical stakeholders of APC are supposed to be working for unity and progress of the party during the forthcoming 2023 general elections, they have decided to deploy religious sentiments as a weapon of war to discourage Christians from Tinubu/Shettima”, the group said. .

In a statement signed by the leader of the Coalition , Elder Peter Sati Auta, they said that, ” Nigerians , especially the electorate are wise enough to know that whipping religious sentiment against any candidate is not the solution to the challenges of insecurity; dwindling economy, Insurgency, high unemployment rate, bad governance and other problems militating against progress and development of Nigeria.”

While stating that the Holy Bible gave Christians the mandate to pray for leaders, they said that “anything out of this is not only unhealthy ,but retrogressive”.

“This amongst several reasons is why as Christian leaders in various churches , we decided to come out and speak against the divisive move by our brothers to create a religious crack in the polity ahead of the 2023 elections.”

“Instead of holding nocturnal meetings to fight the issue of of Muslim -Muslim Ticket, we expected them to spend energy on talking about how to contribute their quota in finding solutions to plethora of above mentioned problems that over the past twenty years have served as cog in the wheel of progress.”

“Babachir and Dogara could be the ones working to overheat the polity and destroy same party that gave them platform of political relevance. We hold the view that this is nothing but mere selfish interest of the spent forces ,which should should be rejected outrightly “.

“Everyone knows that both former Lagos State Governor ,Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former Borno Governor , Alhaji Kashim Shettima are not religious bigots ,so the earlier they know that the idea of whipping religious sentiments against then won’t work.”

“It is in public domain that Tinubu and Shettima helped good number of Christians during their days as Governors of Lagos and Borno.Where were they, when the heavy campaign of calumny of being a “religious bigot” was muted against Buhari? Of course , some of them supported him to win and were later compensated with appointments. Even with all the unprintable names Buhari was called ,yet they worked for him.”

“We are urging Christians to shun Babachir ,Dogara and Senator Abbo’s divisive strategies and vote candidates of their choice regardless of religion and tribal backgroundsThe most important thing for Nigerians now is to come out during the election and vote good leaders based on merit ; experience and records of performance.”

10 Best States To Find Jobs In Nigeria
July 29, 2022

One of the best decisions a Nigerian can make is to find a job in a good state. Nowadays, security, ethnicity, cultural disposition and availability of industries affect the jobs that Nigerians opt for.

Nobody in Nigeria is in a position to predict the future of the job market in different states. Most states in Nigeria have better-growing economies than others. There are states that are best for looking for employment, be it white-collar or blue-collar jobs. That is why we took the pleasure of putting together this article of the 10 best states to find jobs in Nigeria. Without further ado, let us dive in.

1. Lagos State

Lagos is one of the world’s five largest cities. Lagos, which was the former capital of Nigeria has so many industries where Nigerian graduates and other prospective employees of labour can be absorbed. The large population in Lagos suggests that there is an active market for brands and industries that offer different products and services. From Real Estate to Raw Materials Industries, and even Fintech companies, Lagos houses the brightest minds in the Nigerian business sphere. This is why the best recommendation for a Nigerian youth seeking blue-collar or white-collar employment should be to start their job search from Lagos.

2. Abuja

Abuja also referred to as the “federal capital territory, ” houses lots of Ministries and MDAs. This part of Nigeria is home to the Headquarters of top brands in Nigeria. As a Nigerian graduate looking for a federal or private job, Abuja is a search-worthy locale in Nigeria. The major mantra of Abuja is its safety courtesy of it being the residence of the Nigerian president. So many brands to date, are drawn towards the Nigerian capital to set up their businesses. Due to the high societal standards in Abuja, getting a job there can prove to be difficult. All the same, job-seeking in Abuja across all of its working sectors is worth it.

3. Kano State

Just behind Lagos, Kano is the second most populated state in Nigeria. Wherever you find a high population, there are chances of meeting a booming economy. Economies across different states in Nigeria thrive due to the symbiotic relationship between businessmen and the State Government. It is important to note that Kano State is one of the non-oil states in Nigeria that has a booming economy.
Second, only to Abuja, Kano State is the best place for an unemployed Nigerian to look for jobs. If you graduated with an engineering-related degree, your chances of getting a job in Kano State are high. This is because the booming economy of Kano State revolves around; agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The Fintech sector of Kano State is also thriving. A high population means that there will be a need for individuals, banks and the state government to maintain cash flow at different levels. A graduate with a finance-related degree can easily land a job in Kano State.

4. Rivers State

Another interesting state in our listicle, which is a good option to find jobs in Rivers. Unlike Abuja and Kano, their economy is driven by oil and fishery. If you are a graduate with an engineering degree that is related to the Oil and gas industry, this is the go-to state for job opportunities. The Education sector in Rivers State is also a gold mine. Having an education-related degree can also increase one’s chances of landing a job in this riverine state.

Another interesting perk of job seeking in Rivers State is that it is a major trading hub in Nigeria. Port Harcourt in Rivers State has luxurious layouts that give the State and private Real Estate investors huge turnover in profit. Getting a job in related sectors is a no-brainer in Rivers.

5. Ogun State

This State mainly favours blue-collar job seekers. If you are not an industrialist, your chances of landing a job in Ogun State are very low. This state in Nigerian state is known for producing raw materials used by Pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria. Some of such materials produced include; limestone, clay, and phosphate. The major export of this state is raw materials. A degree in an engineering job is a good way to start.

This Yoruba state has other working state-owned and private sectors that are economically vibrant such as the Fintech sector, Transport, Healthcare and Sports.

6. Edo State

First off, not all parts of Edo State give Nigerian youths high chances of employment. Getting a job in Edo State’s private sector is relatively hard. The major private sector that is doing well, and might be the only one, is the banking sector. Other small-scale fintech companies, such as Microfinance banks, Loan Sharks and POS services, are enjoying a boom. Edo state houses Benin City, which is the number one export of rubber in Nigeria. Getting a blue-collar job in Edo State is easier than getting a white-collar job. To stand out from other job seekers you need to have an engineering degree or Master that is related to what the state exports nationwide (rubber).

7. Oyo State

This listicle will not be complete without including Oyo State. The whole of Oyo state is not enjoying any form of economic boom. However, there is a part of it that is doing so: Ibadan. Ibadan which is the capital of Oyo state is a major trade centre in Nigeria. Ibadan in Oyo State is home to lots of Pharmaceutical companies, Foods and Beverage companies, Agricultural Companies and even big- name Fintech companies in Nigeria.

Just like Kano state, Oyo is a non-oil state that has Ibadan city championing the state’s economy. Any Nigerian with a degree from a professional course can land a job with ease in Oyo State (Ibadan).

8. Enugu State

Enugu State economy is bent around handicrafts, Civil Service jobs, Fintech sector, and Education sector. A Social worker can easily land a job in Enugu. Agriculture is an interesting sector which the balance of the states economy hangs on. A graduate of an Agriculture related job can easily land a job in Enugu. Also worth noting is that Nigerians with degrees related to Engineering can also fair well in their job search. I got a question for someone please. Someone who will be 45yrs old by December with a BSc & MSc in Engineering intends to go to Australia via study visa (to study 1yr Diploma in Leadership&Management from Canterbury College in preparation for managerial role in his current place of work). If he gets the study visa and travels with it, would he be able to change d visa type to work visa on getting a job there or to a PR visa? How? Or what are the alternatives he has?
Thanks in anticipation.

The candidate of a godfather dey perform while that with no godfather has nothing to show in office. It makes sense to stay with the godfather candidate.

Tinubu brought Sanwo-Olu and Shettima brought Zulum, you don't need to struggle to see their achievement in office. Meanwhile, out of 36 governors in Nigeria about 80% came in through their godfathers. Hypocrisy will finish some people in this country walahi!

Politics / Igbo Fought Civil War Out Of Sentiment, Says Dr. Paul Okoye, NIROH President by Laheelow(m): 10:32pm On Jan 11, 2022
Igbo fought civil war out of sentiment, says NIROH president, Dr. Paul Okoye.
By Gordi Udeajah (Umuahia) and Charles Ogugbuaja (Owerri)

• PDP scribe Anyanwu, raises the alarm over plots to discredit him.

President General of Ndigbo Royal Heritage Worldwide (NIROH), Dr. Paul Okoye, has stated that the Igbo fought the Nigerian civil war out of sentiment, but its politicians can not realise their quest for Nigeria’s president in 2023 through sentiment or deceit.

Speaking in Umuahia, Abia State on the sidelines of the NIROH conference for 2023 general elections tagged: Igbo President or Interest, at the weekend, he said the Igbo ought to eschew ethnic campaign, work hard and invest strategically to actualise the president of Igbo extraction.

He stated that the Umuahia conference was convened to strategise on the best way to actualise the quest for an Igbo person as the next president of the country in 2023.

Okoye said Ndigbo had not come to terms with the reality of their existence partly because they have never accepted that they were defeated in the war, adding that time has come for them to come to face the realities of their existence and try other alternatives.

“The North is static, while the West and the East are dynamic. Whoever aligns with the North rules the country. We did it before and we can do it again. Suffice to say that we have the West to checkmate in our quest for Aso Rock.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo gave the West their share. Goodluck Jonathan gave the South-South their share. President Muhammdu Buhari is serving the share of the North. So it is only natural that the Igbo get 2023. But the sad story is that we stand to lose our chances in 2023, if we fail to understand that power can not be acquired on a platter of gold,” he added.

Politics / FG Has Changed Our Negative Narrative About Buhari, Says Igbo Group by Laheelow(m): 7:58am On Dec 31, 2021
Air Peace: FG has changed our negative narrative about Buhari, says Igbo group
Friday Olokor, 25 December 2021.
punchng.com © 1971-2020 The Punch newspapers.

A socio-political organisation, under the aegis of Igbo Centre for Education and Cultural Advancement, on Friday said the Federal Government had changed the negative narrative of the South-East about the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), following the resolution of the air transport impasse with the United Arab Emirates through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

The organisation said that in a country in which the government had repeatedly failed the people, the act of defending individual business to promote the national economy should be applauded.

The Secretary-General of IGBOCECA, Abel Onyemaechi, made these known during a press briefing in Abuja.

According to him, stakeholders of the Igbo nation should support the Buhari regime for the decisive intervention it took over the Air Peace diplomatic face-off with the UAE.

Onyemaechi said, “In the last couple of weeks, we have witnessed the diplomatic brick-bat between the Nigerian government and the United Arab Emirates over landing slots for Air Peace, an airline owned by a businessman from the South-East.

He said, “Air Peace had sought three landing spaces for the Airport in Sharjah, UAE, but was denied the request and offered one slot. In response to the UAE government’s refusal, the Nigerian government withdrew the earlier winter schedule granted to Emirates Airline through the NCAA.

“Expectedly, the UAE government, through the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, in protest of the Nigerian government directive, cancelled its flights’ operation to Nigeria and also stopped other airlines from airlifting Nigerians to Dubai. The UAE government had thought that the Nigerian government would have buckled under pressure and rescinded their decision.”

WhatsApp Launches Campaign to Tackle Fake News in Nigeria
December 9, 2021 6:47 am

WhatsApp, has announced the launch of #YouSaid, a campaign to educate people on how to verify information they come across before passing it on, to help reduce the spread of false news in Nigeria.

The campaign offers tips for WhatsApp users to spot false news and take responsibility in minimising its spread, by encouraging people to think carefully and check authoritative sources before deciding to share any information with their friends and family, according to a statement.

“At WhatsApp, all personal messages are protected with end-to-end encryption because the safety and security of our users and their messages is important to us,” WhatsApp’s Public Policy Lead, Akua Gyekye said, while commenting on the launch of the campaign.

“While we remain committed to creating a safe space for our users to communicate privately, we encourage everyone to verify any information they receive and confirm whether it is true or false before sharing it with other people.

“Regardless of the person you received the information from, as soon as you share any information, it becomes something people think #YouSaid.

“Our hope is that this campaign will open up a conversation on the importance of verifying information and thinking carefully about what people read, trust and choose to share” Gyekye added.

The statement listed four easy ways to reduce the spread of false news on WhatsApp to include: understanding what a ‘Forwarded’ message means; always fact check information with other sources; looking out for messages that look different; and to read the message objectively.

It explained: “Any message that has the ‘forwarded’ label (an arrow or double arrow icon) did not start with the person who sent it to you.

“They will also have received it from someone else before passing it on to you. If you are not sure the information is true, do not forward it to someone else without verifying it.

“A double arrow icon and “Forwarded many times” label will be displayed when a message has been forwarded more than five times since it was originally sent and will restrict sharing to just one chat at a time.”

The statement added: “False news can go viral, and photos, audio recordings, and videos can be edited to mislead you. If you’re unsure whether a message is true, check trusted news sites to see where the story came from. When a story is reported in multiple places and from trustworthy sources, it’s more likely to be true.

“If you receive messages that have such things like misspelled words, wrong dates, awkward layouts, unrelated pictures and web addresses (URLs), it’s a sign that the information could be false.

“Don’t let what you think you know get in the way of your judgment. Review the facts yourself before sharing information. Stories that seem hard to believe are often untrue.”
