Orlu Crisis: Policeman Who Ordered Me To Lie Down At Gunpoint Can’t Do That To Hausa, Yoruba Rulers, Igbo Monarch Laments

The Igwe Uzoubi Umuna Orlu, Imo State, Eze Boniface Okereke, has recalled his ugly encounter with a policeman during the recent clash between members of the Eastern Security Network and personnel of the Nigerian Army in his domain, saying a policeman from the North assaulted him.

The monarch lamented that the policeman asked him to lie on the ground “for over eight minutes” despite being a monarch, an action which he said desecrated the traditions and culture of the land.

In an Interview with PUNCH, Okereke said the crisis, about three weeks ago, was strange to the community as his domain had been largely peaceful, while noting that the “clash was regrettable because people died, properties were lost and business activities were halted.”

He said, “Orlu has no history of violence. Apart from the #EndSARS protest in 2020, this was the first time they clashed. The Indigenous People Of Biafra members don’t live with us here. They came, struck and left. And that is why every traditional ruler was enjoined to find out if any youth in Orlu is among the people who are causing these pains.

“The greatest humiliation of my life was when a policeman desecrated the culture of Igbo people by ordering a traditional ruler of my class and status to lie down on the road before my subjects. I suffered an embarrassing humiliation in the hands of mobile policemen at Carrot Junction here in the domain on Wednesday, January 27.

“At about 2pm, while I was returning from a meeting of the Orlu Traditional Rulers Council held at Umudioka ancient kingdom, on reaching the junction, a team of mobile policemen stopped me and one of them ordered me to get out of my car. I quickly hearkened to his order.

“Despite the inscription on my vehicle number plate asserting to my status as His Royal Highness, Eze B.C. Okereke, the traditional ruler of Uzoubi Umuna autonomous community and my physical appearance as an old man and verbal expression to him that I am the traditional ruler of this community, he still pointed his gun at me and ordered me to lie flat on the ground. I quickly obeyed him because he pointed his gun at me and I didn’t want him to shoot him.

“I lay flat on the floor for over eight minutes and it was thereafter that one of the policemen who later saw the inscription on my car and my regalia quickly urged me to stand and reprimanded the other overzealous cop. This humiliation, desecration of our cultural institution happened in the full glare of my subjects and passersby. It was an embarrassing situation, a big disgrace to my throne and disrespect to my person, community and the council of traditional rulers.”

“I have petitioned the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Imo State Police Command, informing him of the humiliation and urging him to investigate it. That was a humiliation that should not be swept under the carpet. This insult on a traditional ruler of my class cannot happen in Yorubaland or Hausaland. This must be corrected.”

Joe Biden makes a victory speech from the Chase Center after the media declares him the winner of the presidential election against President Donald Trump on November 07, 2020, in Wilmington, Delaware.
Presumptive President-elect Joe Biden pledged not to “see red states and blue states, only to sees the United States” and quoted from the hymn “On Eagle’s Wings" as he addressed the nation in a victory speech Saturday night.

“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but unify. Who doesn’t see red states and blue states, only sees the United States. And work with all my heart with the confidence of the whole people, to win the confidence of all of you. And for that is what America I believe is about. It’s about people. And that’s what our administration will be all about,” Biden said in his speech in Wilmington, Delaware.

While President Donald Trump hasn’t conceded defeat in the 2020 election, as his campaign has several legal challenges in states over ballot counting discrepancies, Biden called his victory “clear” and “convincing.”

“For all those of you who voted President Trump, I understand the disappointment tonight,” he said. “I’ve lost a couple of times myself, but now let’s give each other a chance. It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again. And to make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as our enemies. They are not our enemies. They are Americans. They are Americans.”

Referring to the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, Biden continued, “‘To everything there is a season: a time to build, a time to reap, and a time to sow and a time to heal.’ This is the time to heal in America.”

He added, “Americans have called upon us to marshal the forces of decency, the forces of fairness, to marshal the forces of science and the forces of hope in the great battles of our time. The battle to control the virus. The battle to build prosperity. The battle to secure your family’s healthcare. The battle to achieve racial justice and root out systemic racism in this country.”

Biden also recalled his deceased son, Beau, a former attorney general of Delaware who died in 2015 from brain cancer.

“Folks, in the last days of the campaign, I began thinking about a hymn that means a lot to me and my family, particularly my deceased son Beau,” he said. “It captures the faith that sustains me and which I believe sustains America,” he added, referring to Americans who have lost a loved one through COVID-19 this year.

“And he will raise you up on eagles’ wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, and make you to shine like the sun and hold you in the palm of his hand,” Biden recited the lyrics of the hymn.

Some Christian leaders and Republicans reacted to Biden’s declared victory on Saturday.

J.D. Greear, the pastor of The Summit Church in North Carolina and president of the Southern Baptist Convention, urged Christians to pray for Biden. “Join me in praying for @joebiden and our country. Pray for wisdom, justice, and truth. I pray for success in where he leads in what is righteous and right,” he wrote on Twitter.

Russell Moore, president of the SBC’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, also encouraged Christians to pray for Biden.

“No matter how you voted, now is the time to pray for the country and for our newly elected leaders in both the White House and the Congress,” Moore wrote on his website.

“If government or ideology is an idol for us then the stakes are always apocalyptic and existential,” he warned. “If we seek first the kingdom of God, then we can ask God to bring about good from our leaders — to hold them accountable when they don’t and to commend them when they do, without checking first with whether praying for such is to the advantage or disadvantage of whatever our temporal ‘tribe’ might be.”

Dwight McKissic, the founder and senior pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, wrote on Twitter: “May our land be healed from the virus, unrighteousness, racism, elitism, classism, sexism, family division, devaluing human life, in the womb, and outside the womb. May humility, holiness, health, wholeness and joy return to the land. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

Derwin L. Gray, the lead pastor of Transformation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, warned Christians not to give “Messianic hope and expectation to any president, a Democrat or a Republican. You will be disappointed every time. Do not let the zeitgeist captivate you. Your captivation is reserved for Christ alone,” he tweeted.

Pastor Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, said on Twitter, "America cannot heal as long as we approve of aborting millions of unborn babies and flaunting the moral laws of God without remorse or repentance."

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a Republican, congratulated Biden. “I have prayed for our president most of my adult life. I will be praying for you and your success. Now is the time to heal deep wounds. Many are counting on you to lead the way,” he wrote on Twitter.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, wrote, “Ann and I extend our congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. We know both of them as people of goodwill and admirable character. We pray that God may bless them in the days and years ahead.”

Is Buhari’s daughter a board member of NNPC?

“BUHARI’S daughter is a board member of NNPC,” a social media user @tesseract_ claimed on Monday, October 19, 2020.

“Her salary is N6.7 million, you get N30, 000 monthly for N-Power and you are telling me Buhari shouldn’t resign” reads part of the tweet which also have the EndSARS hashtag.

The hashtag, End Special Anti-Robbery Squad (#EndSARS) or is a decentralised social movement against police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria.

Muahammadu Buhari is the President of Nigeria.

N-Power is a social investment scheme which pays enrolled youth a monthly stipend of N30,000.

The claim has been retweeted by over 30, 000 people, quoted 720 times and garnered more than 24, 000 likes.

THE CLAIM:

That Buhari’s daughter is a board member of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

THE FINDINGS:

The claim did not state which of the Buhari’s daughters is being referred too. However, a picture of Zahra Buhari was added to the the thread. In addition to a contradictory screenshots which state that she is a deputy manager at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.

The NNPC is the state owned oil corporation which asides its exploration activities, has powers and operational interests in refining, petrochemicals and products transportation as well as marketing.

A check on the official website of the NNPC shows a list of a 10-member board of the corporation which does not include Zahra Buhari or any of his known daughters.

They are: Chief Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Stephen Dike, member of the NNPC board and Chief Pius Akinyelure also a member.

Other members are Sen. Magnus Abe, Dr Tajuddeen Umar, Mallam Mohammed Lawal, Mrs Lami Onayi Ahmed, Dr Mahmoud Isa Dutse and Mrs Hadiza Coomassie who is the Secretary to the Corporation and Legal Adviser.

More so, on June 24, 2020, the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture (FMIC) published a press statement announcing the list of the board members approved by the president.

The statement was signed by Mrs Enefaa Bob-manuel, a Deputy Director (Information) in the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

“The members of the NNPC Board who had on 2nd June, 2020 been approved by President Mohammadu Buhari are the Hon. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva who doubles as the Alternate Chairman of the Board, Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, GMD of NNPC, Senator Magnus Abe, Dr Isah Dutse, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance, Dr Tajudeen Umaru, Dr Steven Dike, Mrs Lami Ahmed, Chief Pius Akinyelure, Malam Mohammed Lawal and Secretary of the Board, Mrs Hadiza Commassie,” the statement reads in part.

Prior to that, the list of the board members was earlier released by the Presidency on May 30.

In addition, the list of the previous set of board members during leadership of the late Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru did not have Buhari’s daughter’s name either.

THE VERDICT:

Available evidence does not support the claim that Buhari’s daughter is a board member at NNPC. The claim is FALSE.

What technologist? I can't tell you specific what she can do but if her experience fit in to a skill level 2 occupation, she can assess for it. For Engineering Australia, it is unsure if they accept 5 years experience in lieu of qualification. You can take the plunge, write a good CDR and see how it turns out.

Actually, she presently works as a Process Support Technologist in a service/ contrat company (in contract with a cement company) in charge of some quality control/assurance/laboratory stuffs. Prior to this, she has also work for 4 years as a chemistry teacher/laboratory coordinator in a private school. That's why she had to obtained a PGD(Edu) in 2015 from NTI in case she may want to go back to teaching. Her work experience has always revolve around laboratory. Is it advisable to add her PGDE to her qualification in other to make it equivalent to bachelor degree for this purpose or we should just proceed writing her CDR and see out it turns out as suggested by you. This is because there seems to be no skill level 2 job that is matching her profile. Thanks in anticipation.

Chemical engineering is a skill level 1 occupation, a bachelor degree is required.

There is no Mechanical engineering technologist occupation. Available occupations are Mechanical engineering technician, Mechanical engineering draftsperson and mechanical engineering itself. If you are talking about Engineering technologist (mechanical engineering), the occupation is a skill level 1 occupation and requires a bachelor degree.

However, if your experience is motor mechanic, small engine mechanic or diesel engine mechanic related, you can choose one of those and assess with TRA.

Only Tasmania sponsors Mechanical engineering technician and no state sponsors the draftsperson.

For PhD evidence, you have to submit the PhD certificate plus letter of attestation issued by the school on the successful completion of the research work. Hope it helps.
