Livestock business only tie down your money. Broiler is not lucrative unless you're doing it for festival. If you're doing it for processing, its just for turn over, you hardly make more than 15% profit in two month.

Cost of building and equipment sucks. Maintainance too.

The only aspect of livestock farming that as higher turnover is breeding (fingerlings production, day old production, pure breed pigs)

Expected ROI

Broiler for processing: 10-15%
Layer: #5/layers/day if your egg production is 68% upward

Catfish melunch production: 18%+ 3month
Catfish table size: 30%+ 5month

Hatching catfish can send you back to village but when you master it and the world is at your back you make nothing less than 70% profit in 10weeks with hardwork

Pig: #3500+ per pig 6 to 9month depend on management.

For festive period you can make up more than 70% from Turkey, broiler and cockerel. Think about morality too.

Pig its the one with low risk, because it does not die any how, followed by fishes if well managed and you don't by runt.

Poultry is the toughest but can gives you cash flow for life time.

Assume you have 5000 laying bird and you do have 2 to 5 morality per day for 365 days making 1 year. Calculate such loss.

your analysis is SPOT ON, but if you do poultry well you will always smile after 6 to 8 weeks, broiler has higher roi than layers from my own pov, let me explain, if you spend 1k on a bird to get 2.8 to 3kg in 6 to 8 weeks, let's say you sell at 520 or 550 per kg let's say 520*2.8=1456.
let's say you make 456# on each bird . let's limit mortality to 10% you would still get reasonable profit, FYI processors buy At #525 mostly but if you sell to frozen food stores or cold rooms and you Target a liveweight of 2.8kg after evisceration you should have 1.9 to 2kg left and selling at 800 per kg you should make 1600 per bird .In poultry Business all would fall in place for you if you avoid mortality and your management is top notch. if you can get good breed from the hatcheries and not the runts marketers sells (this one na big Tory, I know how these demons sell runts as premium broilers) you would really love broilers biz. emmachile and jjbest have one of the best threads about broilers on Nairaland

Many organic fertilizers claim micronutrients inside. Let me show you something. Poultry manure has around less than 2% NPK in it. lol. You need huge amount, yet conc organic people who say it like it has all the nutrients in thus world. So, if NPK is less than 2%, how many % of each of the micronutrients will be in it? It us why I call them traces elements. Look at another product called supergro, it has less than 0.2% NPK. hahaha. And if you see how the so called marketers promote it like it is a super made in heaven fertilizer. Seriously, if the macro and micro elements in it is ok for plants, I think it will be toxic for animals and poultry. Yet poultry use it. The
brand you call micronutrients is used for animals too. So, I don't think you can say you are applying micronutrients at all. They are traces elements. That King humus too is a glorified brand. I don't use those things. They don't work. Though, it is possible to do 100% organic very well. Constant bombarding of the land with manure. There are other methods of apply nutrients apart from manure, but not those products.


Solarization works, and can be done during dry season. You just have to use transparent nylon, and not black. Only transparent nylon works. But the depth sun works on what is sterilized. As soon as the roots move below that part, the plants will be infected. It works more for shallow roots, and short term crops. It is why Americans do not use the system again, especially for tomatoes.

@pistotita is it ok to mix manure with bone meal to provide phosphorus for good root development for seeds and seedlings?

@pistotita please is monalisa a good variety to cultivate cos you said it sheds flowers after every harvest and you said it may take ten days from one harvest to another.

Many unlaballed mixtures are very good. It is the maker you just have to depend on. Since some have not got patent or registered with nafdac, they will not bother to write it. Just be careful. Try it, if it works well, let us know.

What kinds of vegetable do you cultivate? How is your progress so far?

Bro, if you get a good 15 15 15 NPK, it is better than the 0 15 15 fertilizer in my opinion. But like I said earlier, 15 15 15 NPK is not a good fertilizer. It needs to be adjusted. I always fine tune it. Very soon, it will be banned. And this 0 15 15 is worse. A terrible option in my opinion.

I wish you share the pictures of all these boom, harvest, bal.bla bla products. And I wish that the manufacturer write details about the enzymes that attracts insects for pollination which are added to the products. Organic stuff makers are deceivers. LOL.

bro, I don't want to spoil market for anyone. But DI grow is not as good as it is claimed. It is ordinary water to me. There is no enough nutrient inside it. You better formulate your own Foliar spray instead of using that DI grow, or whatever it is called. One day my manager brought it newly that there is a miracle Foliar spray. As soon as I checked it, I told him that he should never bring it to my farm again. Never! If you want me to show you why I said he should never bring it to my farm again, just get me pictures of DI grow and I will show you clearly that the stuff is almost like water. I will rather prepare my own Foliar spray than use that product.

If possible, let us see the pictures of all these stuff you have mentioned. And post the picture of the ingredients if they write it on the label. I doubt it. Organic manufacturers will never. And it is why I do not use them, esp those ones from Asia. The ones in the US always put the ingredients there and it is why I patronize them more. Who will just spray what he does not know the content? absolutely, not me. Never!

I doubt the inorganic stuff in it. Also, I doubt organic fertilizers in Nigeria can have up to 15% P and K. I still think you mix it up. But if true, it is worth looking into. And I will have to send it to a laboratory to confirm if truly the content is accurate. Too many dishonest sellers in Nigeria.

no sir, you got it all wrong, the npk 0 15 15 is an inorganic fertilizer while the fruit bloom is an organic fertilizer, it enhances multiple flower formation.here is a snapshot of the fruit bloom from the guy that introduced me to it, di grow red also works wonders with multiple flower formation

I think using NPK 15 15 15 is more cost effective. You don't have 15% Nitrogen on it. So, the manufacturer will add more filler which is not too good. And they call it bloom fertilizer. Hmmmm! But wait! Did you call it organic? Ok. If organic, that is another story. What materials are used to make it? And the urea + npk. Just use NPK 15 15 15 again during flowering. I would ditch the bloom fertilizer if it is synthetic. But if the raw materials are organic, I will go for it since it will help in reducing salt.

But why dont you just use SSP only for phosphorus? And if you will NO later, just subtract that from the SSP you will apply during soil preparation. You need to apply nutrient before sowing. apply nutrient 10 days after sowing is a bad technique. If you apply nutrients in soil before planting cucumber, be ready to run cos that cucumber will be flying.


Why do you delay fertilizer application till 10 days after germination? What will your plants feed on for 10 days? Try to use SSP + NPK inside the holes you are planting. Mix very well and see result. You will be amazed. Then after 10 days, start using urea only.

If MOP works well for you, fine. But for me, it is too expensive to use on open field when there are cheaper options readily available.

it's #8200 per 50kg bag and it's in granules. my fertilizer protocol is this, I use npk + ssp a week after germination and urea + npk when the plant is 15days old then at flowering stage, mop + npk or npk 15 15 15 with fruit bloom organic fertilizer.

the first thing to do before planting is apply manure,then plant,if u see tendrils,apply npk 20 10 10,we mix it with urea because of the poor soil we have,if u have good soil leave urea at that stage,after 2 weeks put npk 20 10 10 + urea,if you see flower at 28-30 days use,npk 15 15 15 + manure,after 2nd harvest repeat only npk 151515 and do so every 2nd harvest,for serious commercial cucumber farms fertilizer is applied every 7-10 days and while u are doing that foliar fertilizer will be sprayed on the leafs every week with fungicides and other concoctions.if your soil is rich and u follow this procedure u will harvest more than ten times.NB we use bottle crown cap for measuring ferts,it's roughly 6 grams.
