All these comments about nail care and all is really making me feel very unladylike. Honestly, you don't want to see my nails! Interestingly, i av naturally lovely nails that grows very easily and has a naturally lovely shape, that is if i allow it grow. it's about the only part of my appearance i take for granted. Many times when people compliment me on my overall appearance, when they eventually see my nails shocked, I'm sure they feel like withdrawing the compliment

Victoria Garden City (VGC) is one of the areas generally reputed to be safe. Same cannot however be said of other parts of Lekki, with the increasing spate of armed robbery in recent times. Apapa is also relatively safe.

FoodRe: The Worst Food You've Ever Eaten !! by lami4life(f): 1:10pm On Apr 04, 2008
i have this aunt who's very, very adventurous when it comes to culinary skills. She can come up with a wide variety of food combinations that can actually expedite ones journey to the grave! But because she's a very nice individual and has the best of intentions, some of us who are dear to her have had to endure the minutes of gulping down these poison sorry, food, with plastic smiles and complimentary remarks God help you if you leave out the complimentary remarks

Now one of most amazing combinations I'v encountered with her is Akamu (pap) with cooked rice now wait for this mixed together shocked.

On learning about our menu for the day, virtually every family member came up with reasons to abscond or abstain (e.g 'Sorry I'v got to leave, something just came up'; 'I'm on a special diet, won't be able to join you"; I'll eat mine later. Just leave it in the pot"wink . Muggins (now that's me) was feeling so considerate and decided to make her happy by eating.

In retrospect, that was the singular most suicidal action I'v ever taken angry. I still live with the regret. cry

Lmao so because she gave a GENERIC answer like "the bible", she has brains?

How is that any different than the just as generic response of "I wish there was peace on Earth" answer to "what would you wish for in this world" in just about every pegent show
Actually, Agbani was asked to mention three items she'd want to have if lost in the dessert. While i can't remember the full answer she gave, i recollect that the 3 items served basic needs: Bible (for her spiritual well-being), a blanket (clothing/Physical) and a 3rd item i just can't seem to remember. What made the reply tick is the fact that the items represented the basic needs of life and she came up with the response within seconds and without hesitation. I'v also listened to a number of her interviews. I think she has depth unlike our new MBGN.

Oh my gush, the judges need GOGGLES really, how could they pick her of all others available. Well not impressed by all the girls presented, i don't see anything that strikes as distinguishably beautiful. If was was to pick a winner, Well based on the pictures provided, I will give it to Miss Taraba.

I think the taraba chick is the most presentable as a beauty contest winner followed by nasarawa. I hope I am not blind

well, i did not listen to the questions they answered so this is just based on appearance alone. Also, the person that took their pictures made it look awful. sorry to say
Not only are the judges blind, they are also deaf. Now more than ever before, i believe intelligence is a very insignificant part of competition. The winner was so so shallow. Miss Taraba deserved the crown. the integrity of the whole thing is questionable.
Christianity EtcRe: Noisy Places Of Worship by lami4life(f): 3:03pm On Apr 01, 2008
I'm a christian and I love church BUT I think we should be respectful of our neighbors and their space and peace. Serving and praising God does not mean we disrupt the lives of those around us.

Yes have service, we'll praise God lively and sometimes it'll get real loud but don't exaggerate with speakers that you can hear from the next country, or have round the clock events at 3am on a weeknight when people are trying to sleep and get rest for work the next day. Part of serving and loving God is treating your neighbor like you'd want them to treat you, and respecting their needs.

But poster I think you have few no options. . . unfortunately there's nuthin you can do.

But we must admit DO ME is better than Stylee, and DO ME got first on MTV base for a good number of weeks
STYLEE was first for two weeks and it was out

I think P squared deserved to win something it is not that i love them so much but
let us open our eyes and stop the tribalism
They were right that Award ceremony was a Yoruba hip hop award

Ehn ehn, so the award wasn't a yoruba one when they got several awards in previous years. It probably was an Igbo award the year before when they won several awards and actually stole the show! Let's grow up and reason less superficially.

I'm still trying to understand whether that was a joke or not. THAT ad was awful! The radio advert of the same product also deserves the worst ad of the year. You need to listen to the sentiments of the ad: A woman is wondering why her husband and the kids have been looking so healthy lately (courtesy of their use of YOYo bitters). Arrant nonsense! What are they? Strangers under the same roof? NONSENSE!

Christianity EtcRe: What Is Free Will? by lami4life(f): 2:25pm On Mar 14, 2008
The concept of freewill has to be put in perspective. Having freewill presupposes the following:
- You have options
- You are aware of the options
-You can choose which option you decide to. Choices cannot be imposed on you.
-Consequences are attached to each of the options.

Learn from the example of Ancient Israel. Even though they were God's chosen nation, he always laid bare the options to them i.e if you go this way, this is the consequence but if you choose the other, this is the consequence. Inspite of the several privileges they enjoyed as his special people, they kept sinning against him over and over again and he on the other hand kept appeasing them to make decisions dat won't hurt them. However, he did not impose any course of action on them. Infact the scriptures show he was deeply hurt by the negative reactions. That does not sound like the concept the poster was trying to put forward. We are not propelled like robots. If we weren't free moral agents, don't you think all the people in the world would just be zombie-like followers of the Maker? Instead, we are choosing our paths in life: whether to serve God or not to.

Christianity EtcRe: How Do We Know The Bible Is The Word Of God? by lami4life(f): 11:09am On Mar 14, 2008
@Poster

Aside from several fulfilled prophecies over the centuries, I'll tell u why i'm convinced the bible is of divine origin

- Archaelogy and history support it. in fact, many historical facts raised in the bible which were hitherto doubted and criticized by scientist are now being established by new archaelogical findings. will be back with specific instances.

- Tell me of any other compliation of 66 small books, written by 40 different individuals with diverse backgrounds over several centuries, with such coherence and consistency and i will accept it as THE BOOK. for it have achieved this, it must have been divinely inspired. Think about, even in the field of advanced science, they never agree.

-I am yet to see any other book that has undergone such intense extinction attempts by governments and other authorities over several centuries and yet survived it. Right now it's even waxed stronger as it is the most widely distributed book in the world. It's phenomenal! IT HAS TO HAVE DIVINE BACKING. Will be back with specific cases.

-This book has positively changed lives in unimaginable proportions.

IT IS DIVINE.

romeo:
I know there are songs titled "don't take it personal"

one by Monica and another by Usher ft. Lue Diamond and many more

and there is a book called "don't take it personally" by Elayne Savage

So i need some good grammatical reasons why they are wrong wink
Romeo, do wordings of TODAY'S songs provide the benchmark for your measurement of good english? I wouldn't use dat as a basis if i were you! tongue I'd rather suggest the use of an advanced dictionary or advanced grammar books.

cashoggy:
Really? 'personal' is an adjective, just like 'good', 'easy' 'cold' etc. If one can say 'make it good' 'take it easy (and not necessarily 'take it easily')', and 'drink it cold', I don't want to believe ', take it personal' is wrong. Peeps, what do you think? Please let's learn.
cashoggy:
Furthermore, I believe '‘taking it personal’ would mean ‘applying a direct and personal meaning to it’ For example, my reference to some Igbo people’s pronunciation of ‘lining’ as ‘landing’ above may trigger off a negative reaction by an Igbo Nairalander who may see it as offensive. It can then be said that such a person is ‘taking it personal’ whereas I've made a general observation. On the other hand, ‘taking it personally’ would mean ‘getting hold of, or laying one’s hand on an object by oneself, instead of another person doing it for one. That is, being physically or personally involved in that action. kiss

Also, about the 'bandwagon' issue, I think (not sure though) it is an idiomatic expression. huh Does anyone else know about this
?
On your literal application of 'take pesonally' and reference to similar phrases, let me ask you these:

- Why is the plural form of sheep, sheep when similar words have 's' added ?
- Why is the plural form of Chief, chiefs and not chieves like we find in words like Leaf-leaves?
-Why is it permissible to use 'she' for ships when it they are not humans?
-Why, in spite of the rule in english language that vowels should be preceeded by the word 'an', are some 'h' words preceeded by 'an' and others are not ?

it is because english language(as well as most other languages) are not what you can always call scientific. There are ever exceptions to the rules.
Beyond that, 'take personally' is an idiom that means getting offended by something. As such the example of cashoggy of someone being offended by another's opinion fits perfectly into the use of the phrase 'take personally'. it can be said thus: 'The Igbo nairalanders took it personally'. It is ever so right and was not used literally but idiomatically.

Climbing/jumping on the bandwagon is an idiom as well.
CultureRe: Mis-used And Mis-pronounced English Words by lami4life(f): 4:36pm On Mar 12, 2008
@Romeo
Really. wink

I've noticed dat we atimes make the mistake of juxtaposing local terms with English words. A good example is the english word 'lanky'(thin) and the yoruba word 'lanki' ( as in lanki lanki)- plump. These two words are virtually antonyms but some people tend to use ' Lanky' (the english word) in the context of a plump person.

LANKY MEANS THIN.
CultureRe: Mis-used And Mis-pronounced English Words by lami4life(f): 4:13pm On Mar 12, 2008
I've heard people make statements like "Don't take it personal". It should be "Don't take it personally".

Another commonly misused one especially in Naija is "join the bandwagon". You don't join the bandwagon, u either climb or jump on the bandwagon.

Will try to think of some more.

Below is a write-up by an unknown writer and is written in the 1st person. It's written to chronicle the process of fetal development.
Go thru it and tell me what u feel. Will tell u what i feel later.

OCTOBER 5:

Today my life began. My parents do not know it yet, i am as small as a seed of an apple, but it is i already. And i am to be a girl. I shall have blond hair and blue eyes. Just abut everything is settled though, even the fact that I shall love flowers.

OCTOBER 19:

Some say that I am not a real person yet, that only my mother exists. But i am a real person, just as a small crumb of bread is yet truly bread. My mother is. And i am.

OCTOBER 23:

My mouth is just begining to open now. Just think, in a year or so i shall be laughing and later talking. I know what my first word will be: 'MAMA'

OCTOBER 25:

My heart began to beat today all by itself. From now on it shall gently beat for the rest of my life without ever stopping to rest! And after many years it will tire. It will stop, and then i shall die.

NOVEMBER 2:

I am growing a bit every day. My arms and legs are begining to take shape. But i have to wait a long time yet before those little legs will raise me to my mother's arms, before these little arms will be able to gather flowers and embrace my father.

NOVEMBER 12:

Tiny fingers are begining to form on my hands. Funny how small they are! I'll be able to stroke my mother's hair with them.

NOVEMBER 20:

It wasn't until today that the doctor told mom that i am living here under her heart. Oh, how happy she must be! Are you happy, mom?

NOVEMBER 25:

My mom and dad are probably thinking about a name for me. But they don't even know that i am a little girl. I want to be called Kathy. I am getting so big already.

DECEMBER 10:

My hair is growing. It is smooth and bright & shiny. I wonder what kind of hair mom has.

DECEMBER 13:

I am just about able to see. It is dark around me. When mom brings me into the world it will be full of sunshine and flowers. But what i want more than anyting is to see my mom. How do you look, mom?

DECEMBER 24:

I wonder if mom hears the whispering of my heart. Some children come into the world a little sick. But my heart is strong and healthy. It beats so evently: tup-tup, tup-tup. You'll have a healthy little daughter, mom!

DECEMBER 28:

Today, my mother killed me.

I know issues of abortion have been discussed in past threads, but I'm reliving it from another perspective. What do you think?
