I understand to a large extent what the other poster is saying with capitalism and profit maximization
That's why many companies like Apple Google Microsoft Samsung etc the major beacon bearers for capitalism moved most of their production to China and Asia where they can exploit cheap sometimes underage labor and terrible working conditions that wouldn't stand scrutiny of any western nation
If in Nigeria and other developing nations we have to abide by the western nation standards like environmental protection, standard working conditions , wages to match the west. Then our people won't be able to afford it
Where I differ is you refusing to pay for work already done. That is fraud We are not even talking about working conditions yet because if we do, we will not even finish this discussion. Like I said before, what you get in Nigeria is cheap labor when you compare our working conditions/salaries and other benefits with other top African countries not to talk of the western world. It's even the Nigerian companies (mostly start ups) that are incorporating standard work benefits into their employee benefits. Like you said, it is fraud to not pay people for work they have done. The State Govts owe salaries, pensions and gratuities without consequences, why wont private employers think they can get away with it. At least a decent labor law will ensure that people get paid for the work they have done. |

DontBullshitMe: I deeply sympathise with your situation and I hope that you get a divine break soon enough.
But the truth has to be said. Nigeria, a struggling, poor, underdeveloped, overpopulated country cannot afford to enact strong labour laws, no matter how painful and depressing it sounds. Strong labour laws will scare off entrepreneurs who are willing to take huge financial risks setting up businesses and factories. Apart from the discouragement it will instill into entrepreneurs, it will also kill the little industries we have because Nigerians are very indisciplined, undutiful, and too entitled.
Bring strong labour laws into this country (which is impossible by the way) and watch how the little factories and industries will pack up before six months. Then, you have worsened unemployment rate and the cheap products you buy in the market disappear.
Also, you talk about Lebanese and Chinese and it sounds so embarrassing. Those guys are the real life savers of Nigeria's economy. They take huge financial risks setting up factories and producing very cheap items to the Nigerian market. Remember that they have no safety net, many of them have started industries that eventually resulted into huge financial loss, nobody cares.
Look at all Nigerian big men, they always go for the low risk sector like Petrol stations, hotels etc. Lebanese and Chinese will set up a high risk factory, employing thousands and producing cheap products. Yet you still dislike them. Abeg.
The country is overpopulated, the only competitive advantage we have is our cheap and exploitable labour. If Nigerians didn't want this, they should have kept their population around 40-50m so the oil money can go round like the Arab countries. I dont even know where to start replying you from. How you people are equating non payment of salary to cheap labor is what I really dont understand. It's not as if Nigeria labor isn't cheap already. Let's kuku allow employers to do whatsoever they want. |

DontBullshitMe: The whole essence of Capitalism is exploitation of labour. The truth is : for Nigeria to become industrially competitive, labour will still have to be exploited far more than they are experiencing presently.
Economy is down, Zero jobs. Una say make Nigeria enact strong labour laws. Who go invest capital in a (clearly underdeveloped) country whose Government cherishes labour more than the owners of the chain of production?
Dey play. . . Theres a difference between cheap labor and refusing to pay your workers your agreed wages. It is this mindset that you have and people like you that allow these Lebanese, Chinese and the likes to take advantage of our people. The country is currently on cheap labor anyways but we need laws to at least protect employees from employers that still want to take advantage of their workforce because theres no solid labor laws to use against them. Look at most state govt that are owing several months of salaries, most of them are not even paying the minimum wage yet are still owing several months of salary. Please what do you call that? |

Ibime: It's possible that those expansion efforts have led to cash flow problems. It happens, however it is incumbent on the company to collect a loan to satisfy it's working capital requirements, of which salary payments should have the utmost priority. In Nigeria, it seems wages are the first to go when any company or entity is having cash flow problems, which speaks to weak employment choice, poor labour laws and impunity. Yes and that's why I said we need better labor laws.it could've been another thing entirely if we were paid in November. The last salary we received was October. They promised they will pay Nov and Dec salary before Christmas in the early weeks of Dec when Nov salary never show only to start telling us another thing entirely this year. |

There are diagnostic tools used in diagnosing depression depending on the individual patient. Oh thank you. Donjazet2: It's funny seeing you list out these things as potential causes.
But seriously, can depression be accurately diagnosed? Like, how does someone know if he's depressed or not? Can a doctor know if someone is depressed? What are the unique symptoms? If you are depressed you will know. I really dont know how to explain it but you will definitely know if you are. Maybe doc can elaborate on possible symptoms to watch out for. |

BlueRayDick: I will suggest u get a bigwig lawyer like dem Femi Falana or upcoming activists like Inibehen Effiong. They will probably not burden u with high retainers hip fees but expect to get something out of the Compenasation u will be awarded by the court.
Some of those companies are just plain evul and u will see their promoters spending millions over the weekend at parties and charity donations. That's the plan. We just want to give them the chance to do the reasonable thing before we drag them through the mud both on social media and through the court. HR practically told us we should just manage and bear with them that it was the expansion and its infrastructural needs that's causing the salary delay. I havent heard tha kind of excuse before. |

BlueRayDick: The Labour laws are not the problem, it's the slow judicial process. Check the link below :
https://www.nairaland.com/365622/justice-t-last-supreme-court
Sacked lecturers got justice after being sacked 10 years before the final judgement. 3 of the sacked workers even died in the course of the 10 year legal battle. That is why u will see people rather focus on getting new jobs after being sacked unjustly than pursuing justice in a law court. I'm currently dealing with one case like this. The company I work for hasn't paid us since Nov. Infact the company hasn't resumed this year because we have all refused to work and demanding our unpaid salaries. Infact most of us have our resignation letter in hand, we just want them to pay and we resign. The annoying part is that they are expanding their branches while owing salaries of most of their workforce. The plan is to initiate a class action suit by the end of the month our salaries are not paid by then. Already on the look out for other opportunities. However long the lawsuit might be, better to test our laws against these private employers than just resign to fate. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by larride(m): 11:10am On Jan 15, 2023 |
We need to strengthen our labor laws tbh. The way some companies are moving mad is unexplainable.
Once companies start getting class action suit, maybe just maybe we will have some sanity back. Ditto for State Govt that refused to pay their workers their due wages.
Employees should be able to initiate class action suit against the govt. |
