Noisyrians: Must Ghana share a border with Nigeria to enforce the ecowas rule on free movement of people? Did Nigeria restrict free movement of people? |

Ibime: No he is right. Since Nigeria decided their local laws supercede Ecowas freedom of movement (whether from Benin, Cameroon, Chad or Niger), then Ghana can also feel empowered to supercede Ecowas freedom of movement laws with their own. They actually still maintain freedom of movement, you just can't trade freely without meeting their threshold. The law has been there since 1992 and there has always been issue concerning that particular law which they usually look a way to settle them up. The land border was closed to exporting and importing of goods. People still cross over from those borders. They can also still import their stuff through the sea or by air. The land border was closed to checkmate smuggling and loss of import duties that would have been earned if those smuggled goods were imported legally. For example, While Nigeria wanted to focus on home grown rice production and attain rice sufficiency, Nigeria imposes 70% duties on rice importation. Benin republic responded by reducing their own custom duties from 35% to 7% while Cameron responded by reducing their own custom duties from paltry 10% to ZERO. This is clearly sabotage. Most of those riceprenuer just reroute their cargo to Benin republic, Togo and Cameron paying next to nothing on custom duties and then smuggle those rice into Nigeria through the porous border. Nigeria has even complained bitterly to all those countries we share land border with that they need to police their border efficiently while we focus on our side of the border also. Nigeria even complained to Ecowas also about how these countries are encouraging smuggling into our country, turning our country into a dumping ground and killing off local manufacturers and farmers. What did Ecowas do? Nothing. We don’t share land borders with Ghana. For Ghana to get to Nigeria through the land border, they will have to pass through 2 countries (Togo and Benin) before getting to our land border. They should look for another excuse to enforce their law. |

Thanks for shedding light on the situation Charlie. It's understandable. One love. He’s trying to be smart by half. For starters we don’t share land border with Ghana. What we share with Ghana is maritime border and it wasn’t closed. He’s right though about the law banning non Ghanaians from operating petty or retail business outlet. |

Me & few colleagues wrote a manuscript detailing the mechanism of action of some FDA approved repurposed drugs, most especially Remdesivir for the virus therapeutic management. I’d rather look inward to Remdesivir (& ritonavir) as it’s in phase 2 clinical trial, same with tocilizumab, both works to inhibit RNA Dep & interleukin-6 respectively. A critical stage that prevent the viral synthesis & decreases inflammation. Will share the link once published in few days. You are doing well. |

Ibime: This may be a bad move as most Local Government leaders are despots, most in the South-South are either militants or vicious thugs who got LGA Chairman role as their reward for delivering for the Governor. LGA Chairmen commit more abuses and there are no press controls on their actions, whereas a Governor has to manage press fallout from their actions.
Any further loosening of central command-and-control toward a democracy of thugs is to be discouraged. Democracy of thieves and thugs us the worst thing that can happen to a country. We already have too much Executive power in the hands of tinpot Governors. I have always maintained that FG does a much better job than State Govt and State Govt does a much better job than Local Govt. This is because FG is somewhat accountable to International bodies and International perception, while State bodies are somewhat accountable to National perception. For example you can never see FG not paying salaries for months on end unlike State Govt.
Local Govt own is to do anyhow, anyhow and no one will hold them to account. On NL front-page yesterday we saw a pastor being tortured on camera for criticising Local Government. But the local government are closer to the people and if we get local government councils to work as they should, we will witness massive developmental improvement. There are lots of responsibilities that State Gov take on that are meant for the local government especially when it comes to constructing of inner roads, maintenance and repairs, primary health care centers and primary schools. Local government are meant to bring governance closer to the people. I’m really hopeful that when the National Assembly rework the electoral reform bill, we will make headway in the way LG elections are conducted. The Supreme Court already ruled that State Gov has no power to remove elected local government chairmen and appoint caretaker committees. We just need to keep strengthening our institutions till we get it right. Governance must be decentralized if we want rapid development. |

Good decision to leave the war alone. Even people that participated in the war gave different accounts that don't even in any way agree with each other.
Imagine Gowon claiming he released Awolowo and Ojukwu claiming same. Unfortunately the Awo himself was late and couldn't tell the two ex-warlords to keep his name out of their mouths.
Funny thing is someone sympathetic to Biafra course thinks Awo is a backstaber who was released by Ojukwu but turned back to join forced with Gowon; while fans of Gowon and one Nigeria thinks Awo was released by Gowon and his contribution to the war effort particularly allged advice to Gowon to starve Biafra of relief materials won the war for Gowon.
The war story is very sensitive It’s a very sensitive matter that shouldn’t have been brought here. |

But how is giving state judiciary direct access to federal funding a good move? Not federal funds, the money will be deducted from the State allocation. The plan is to make them really independent in the true sense of it. At least with these move, we can begin to see State HoA actually doing their job and not being a lackey for state govenors. |

nihilistjnr: What source?
I'm confused The source is the Consolidated Federation Account. Just like what Buhari hope to achieve with the local government financial autonomy. The sharing formula from the federation account is FG: 52.68%, State: 26:72% and LG: 20.60%. The State government cunnily made sure that LGA allocation were paid together with the state allocation directly to the state account and then “they” will credit their respective LGA account. Buhari change that last year June. Now back to the State HoA and State Judiciary, the executive order mandates each state to compulsorily add their state HoA and Judiciary to their statutory transfer list. The State HoA and State Judiciary will no longer be the mercy of the State government as their salaries and the likes will be paid by themselves according to their budget. The order even empowers State Judiciary to embark on special capital project like building and maintaining of state high court complex, magistrate court complex and the likes. Any State Government that fails to comply with the order, the funds will be deducted at source (Consolidated Federation Account) during the allocation sharing by the FG and it will be sent directly to the State HoA and State Judiciary account. Buhari has set up a Presidential Inplementation committee to make sure the order is implemented across the nation. |

Let the states generate their revenue and be in charge of it. They can be sending some percentage to the federal instead of the other way round. You will see how states will sit up and nobody bothers abuja again on major issues. BlueRayDick: Thank u for this. I find it hard believing whatever figure they churn out because we don't even know the population of the country. The last census was done 14 years ago and it was fraught with controversies that shows the data is inaccurate.
We don't have unemployment benefits, so at what point does the government know someone used to work but he's now unemployed?
That was why I said those guys just padded figures and dish it out and claim that is the situation on ground when it's far from it. You hardly see 15 people gaining employment out of a class of 100 within the first 1 year of graduation and NYSC. Yet they are talking about a Lower unemployment rate. @ bolded, I think this is a wrong choice of word. You cannot claim they didn’t use enough sample test and at the same time claim the figures they release are padded. You can say you think they didn’t have sufficient sample to pool from but categorically saying they are padding figures they release is a bit of an overstretch since you yourself don’t even have any data we can compare it with. If you check our unemployment rate, you will notice they are rising on an annual basis. If you say they are padding the figures, are they padding it to increase the figures yearly? |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by larride(m): 12:42am On May 22, 2020 |
Ibime: UK unemployment rate is measured via a random sample of 100,000 adults so 800,000 in Nigeria is OK as a sample size.
What Naija doesn't have is a sense-check mechanism like in the West they also track the no of unemployment benefit claimants.
TBH, you cannot argue with any figure produced in Naija because what really defines unemployment? Whilst the average Nigerian girl baking cake and chinchin in her house after NYSC may describe herself as unemployed, one can argue she is self-employed. I am guessing if the statisticians call her as part of the 800k sample and she says she is making chinchin, they will mark her down as employed. There is no profit figure you must hit to class yourself either way. However what I know is that very few Nigerians are gainfully employed. Underemployment. YES. |

BlueRayDick: Oga mi, the 800k is their sample which they will use to represent the population. Whatever Labour force figure they want to come up with is in the 800k. That is how sampling works.
What I'm saying is doing analysis and basing decisions on a sample of 800k out of over 100m population shows Ur data will not be accurate.
By the way IMF, World Bank will not leave their country and organize census in Ur country for u na. Na wetin u give dem in terms kf Ur population dem go take. @ bolded, the pooling sample of 800k was in 2014, it’s definitely not going to be the same sample size they will use for 2019. I don’t think it’s right to claim they are still using the 2014 sample to derive their stat for 2019. IMF and World Bank do partner with relevant agencies to conduct their research especially for planning purposes. That’s why they have their representatives in each member state. |

BlueRayDick: Since u say u don't know, no problem then.
But just take a look at this screenshot below. Without attaching sentiments, will u take whatever data obtained from the process described in the screenshot serious?
Nigeria has a population of over 100 million (that has not been verified to be true or not) , they want to know the unemployment rate amongst the population so they decided to gather data thru a field survey that lasted just 3 weeks and allegedly had a sample size of 800,000
Do u know what percentage of 100million 800k represents? 0.8% which is even less than 1%
A certain Dr Yemi Kale and his team Sat down and calculated unemployment rate based on this 800k sample size and use it to represent the whole population and we are supposed to swallow it hook line and sinker because dem Sabi economics and statistics pass. Fixed. Looking at the screenshot, it talks about what they start about how they began collecting data for the unemployment rate. I believe unemployment rate will be gotten from the labor force. Maybe Ibime or Nihilistjnr can shed more light on that. The screenshot was talking about what happened in 2014, a lot of things will have changed and some things improved upon. Data collection is no joke. Almost all data that world bank, IMF or any other body post about Nigeria are majorly sourced from the NBS which means to an acceptable degree, their data are reliable. |

When I remind her of the non-stopping increase in her children's fees since the advent of this administration, how much she fuels her car now, how the car park at marina has increased parking fees from ₦500 to as much as ₦750 daily, how the company's investment income is no longer anything to write home about......etc all in response to how things has deteriorated economic wise. I've been doing research in the social sciences since I was an undergraduate, I've gone to different lengths to get some of these data, there are no records anywhere . How many company inform government about retrenchment / laying off their staff? How many people have unemployment benefits insurance that will signal the government there has been increase in Unemployed population when they claim on these policies?
I know at least 5 persons personally that have lost their jobs since 2016 till date. Only one of them has been able to get another job. Then I know others that have not gotten a job since they graduated till date.
All those unemployment rate figures u see does not in anyway represent the reality on ground at all. The recently concluded Lagos state teacher's recruitment ; they were recruiting for just 1,000 teachers but they received 50,000 applications. So 1,000 were selected on merit + connection + long leg. Now what happens to the 49,000 that were not selected?
Imagine if we have about 49,000 that couldn't make it to the teaching job's finale, what about engineers, accountants etc?
Once again, forget those figures. Quick one, when they say Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world, did you bother to ask them where they get the data from? According to you, there’s no data anywhere so how do we believe the poverty rate and other stats in Nigeria? |
