GoldNiagara:
Seal emerged from England's house music scene in 1990, to become the most popular British soul vocalist of that decade. Although his earliest material still showed signs of acid house, by the mid-'90s he was known for a distinctive fusion of soul, folk, pop, dance, and rock that brought him success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Early on, he enjoyed a very high level of success -- an Ivor Novello Award was given to him for the writing of his first single, and he won three Grammy Awards only a few years later. His albums were typically released a few years apart, yet they tended to earn multiple gold and platinum certifications in different countries.

https://www.yomzansi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/seal-southafrica-yomzansi.jpg

The son of Nigerian and Brazilian parents,
Seal , born Sealhenry Samuel in 1963, was raised in England. After graduating with an architectural degree, he took various jobs around London, including electrical engineering and designing leather clothing. After a while, he began singing in local clubs and bars. He joined an English funk band called Push , touring Japan with the band in the mid-'80s. When he was in Asia, he joined a Thailand-based blues band. After a short time with that group, he traveled throughout India on his own.

Upon returning to England, Seal met Adamski , a house and techno producer who had yet to make much of an impression in the U.K. Seal provided the lyrics and vocals for Adamski 's "Killer," which became a number one U.K. hit in 1990 and was acknowledged with an Ivor Novello Award. Seal signed a solo recording contract with ZTT and recorded his eponymous debut album with label founder Trevor Horn , who had previously worked with Yes, ABC , Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Grace Jones , among others.

The first single pulled from the album, "Crazy," became a number 15 hit in the U.K. in 1990 and reached number seven in the U.S. upon its release there the following year. Seal was likewise a success, reaching number 24 in America and selling over three-million copies around the world.

Seal subsequently took three years to complete his second album. In between the two records, he appeared on the Jimi Hendrix tribute album Stone Free, singing on Jeff Beck 's version of "Manic Depression." In the summer of 1994, he released his second album, also titled Seal .

Preceded by the American Top 40 hit "Prayer for the Dying," the album did well upon its release, peaking at number 20 and selling a million copies by the spring of 1995, but it didn't really take off until a year after its release, when "Kiss from a Rose" was featured on the soundtrack to Batman Forever . That song became a number one pop single in America and spent a total of 12 weeks at the top of the adult contemporary chart.

https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/05/26/05/40CE20C700000578-4543884-Legend_Seal_has_been_a_musical_mainstay_for_more_than_25_years_r-a-40_1495774162535.jpg

Its success sent the parent album into multi-platinum status; two years after its original release, the album had sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone. Additionally, the song was connected to three Grammy awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Human Being , Seal 's third album, hit the shelves in 1998 and didn't fare nearly as well on a commercial level. Five years passed -- a period that included the recording of Togetherland, a shelved album Seal termed "crap" -- prior to the release of Seal IV . That album put the singer back in the Top Ten of the U.K. album chart and, for the first time, in the U.S. Top Ten. As another lengthy between-album period ensued, there were a couple stopgap packages, namely Best: 1991-2004 and the live CD/DVD combo Live in Paris. Additionally, Seal married Heidi Klum , who appeared as a duet partner on "Wedding Day," a song on the 2007 album System .

For the next several years, Seal was more productive than ever. He switched gears with Soul (2008), for which he covered classic soul songs. In eight territories, the album was certified gold, platinum, or diamond, while it reached number 13 in the U.S. It was produced by David Foster, who remained a creative partner for Commitment (2010) and Soul 2 (2011), the latter of which -- a second set of covers -- also involved Trevor Horn.

The album 7 (2015), issued three years after Seal and Klum 's divorce, was previewed with the tracks "Every Time I'm with You" and "Do You Ever." Those two songs, as well as all others on the album, were produced by Horn.

Seal was actually born Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel at Paddington General Hospital in Paddington, London, to a Nigerian mother, Adebisi Ogundeji, and a Brazilian father, Francis Samuel. Seal's first and middle names are in the Yoruba language https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_(musician)

Olatorera Oniru is one of Nigeria’s most assiduous and ambitious young entrepreneurs. The 29 year-old lady is the founder of Dressmeoutlet.com, a Lagos-based e-commerce startup, that retails fashion products sourced from across the globe.

Dressmeoutlet.com strongly promotes made in Africa goods with the goal of retailing only the best 20% African designers. Olatorera continues to travel across Africa and beyond in search of unique treasures and creative manufacturers to retail on her website, and will be visiting China, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Morocco, Ethiopia and Tanzania within the next coming months.

She enjoys going into the most rural of areas – learning, mingling and discovering unique treasures and natural resources that can be converted into luxury fashion apparel, shoes, jewelry and accessories.

Dressmeoutlet.com ships worldwide and currently has customers in different states across Nigeria, Uganda and the United States of America. The company now employs more than 20 full-time employees and will officially launch with a sales and exhibition event in Lagos, Nigeria on May 22nd, 2016.

With years of experience from top companies including Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Ericsson, Central Bank of Nigeria and General Electric, Olatorera Oniru is successfully building Dressmeoutlet.com into a fashion e-commerce powerhouse and currently has funding offers from notable investors including Nigerian investor Tony Elumelu.

In 2008, Olatorera Oniru graduated cum laude Honors with a degree in Business Administration/ Management and Entrepreneurship from NC A&T State University where she had served as a Senator for Academic Affairs, Founder and President of the Association of African Students, Tutor for Disability and Support Services, Campus Lead for Monster’s Diversity Leadership Program and during a time when she had also worked for General Electric under the Financial Management Program Internship.

Upon graduation, she accepted an excellent opportunity to work for Bank of America Merrill Lynch as a Senior Analyst for the Global Markets and Investment Banking group attaining my 2nd Fortune 5 company work experience. Working for Bank of America Merrill Lynch sums up one of the absolute best times of my life – working on Wall Street in the world’s greatest city that never sleeps – New York City, while leading million dollar initiatives supporting the optimization of revenue by investment bankers.

https://blogs-images.forbes.com/mfonobongnsehe/files/2016/04/IMG0119.jpg

" I was one of the analysts at Merrill Lynch that led the 2009 Global Asset Services Initiative to integrate Merrill Lynch systems with Bank of America’s after the industry buyout and consolidation, during the 2008 financial Industry crisis.

During my employed years at Merrill Lynch, I also served as co-founder and president of Network of African Professionals in New York and as a Junior Board Member of CASA-NY (Court Appointed Special Advocates New York).

After 2 years at Merrill Lynch, I accepted an opportunity to work for the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Senior Supervisor which I did for a year and then proceeded to obtain my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) Degree from Emory University where I focused on Finance, Leadership and Entrepreneurship. While at Emory University, I received scholarships from the National Black MBA Association and The Executive Leadership Council and was a finalist for the Emory Goizueta Business School Entrepreneurship Scholarship.

I was also elected Vice President of Multi-cultural and served as Continent of Africa Captain. During my MBA days, I was keenly learning and strategizing on how to innovate, build, grow and lead a large company and thus my goal as an MBA candidate was to learn, learn, learn, plan, plan, plan. A good percentage of the business plan for Dressmeoutlet.com was written during my MBA days.

Upon graduating with my MBA degree, I accepted an offer with Lars Magnus Ericsson Corporation that provided me the most amazing 3 years of work experience as a global consultant and subsequently as Head of Sales Governance for the MTN Nigeria account, an account that generated over 300 million dollars in annual revenue for Ericsson.

While at Ericsson, I obtained two Executive Leadership Certificates from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland and from Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden.

Over the course of my employed years, I travelled to over 50 cities in over 10 countries in 4 continents. My entire career has been whole-heartedly rewarding and now I am more than ready for the ups, downs, thrills and joys of the entrepreneurial world."
https://aypafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/IMG_8200-300x300.jpg

So what made you delve into entrepreneurship? Seeing that you had built a very successful career working for multi-national conglomerates.
"I was ready for the leap. I believe I have leadership capabilities to create, establish and innovate; and now I want to create global visibility for African products, create jobs for people, and generally do my part in making the world a better place and I would not have 100% of the freedom I need to grow if I remain employed. I have dreams and I want to make all my dreams come true and this requires me investing as much of my time as possible into my dreams. I want to express my love and care for people in my own way.

More importantly, as comfortable as I was, earning way above average with the conglomerates I worked for, I just could not be too comfortable knowing that the poverty rate in Nigeria is 65% and even worse in other African countries. And I know we need more leaders in Africa coming out of our comfort zones to change the status quo. If we have the capabilities and opportunities to do something and do it well, we must utilize it, we must go out there and make a difference.

I am ready to do whatever it takes to build the fashion industry in Africa, create more jobs, contribute to the economy, increase the standard of living and witness Africa blossom. With Dressmeoutlet.com, I aim to witness Africans innovating more with natural resources and capabilities, exporting more finished products and catching up with the giants of the world."

What Does Success Mean To You?
"Success means doing everything I can to push my dreams beyond my biggest imagination. Success means providing for others, creating jobs, employing people. Success means witnessing a reduction in poverty across Africa, witnessing a worldwide increase in the appreciation of human creativity. Success means stronger leaders in politics, success means more entrepreneurs across Africa, and success means a strong boom in the retail industry across Africa.

Success means the smile on employees’ faces when they get a raise, success means the smile on the face of the graduate from Mushin, when I tell him you’re hired. Success means greater partnerships between Africa and America and between Africa and the rest of the world.

Success means the rise of Africa. Success means Africa catching up with the rest of the world’s developed nations. Success means dispatching the very best products out of Africa to homes worldwide. Success means: Greatness. For Nigeria. For Africa. For the world."

Any words of wisdom for young African entrepreneurs that are afraid of starting something?
"Please do it. Go out there and do it, one step at a time, one day at a time, one handshake at a time, one clap at a time, one achievement at a time. Africa now more than ever before, needs more entrepreneurs springing up and booming industries. Africa needs you, I need you, and the world needs you to succeed in whatever your passion is as an entrepreneur.

Utilize any and every resource that comes your way. Speak to professors, attend conferences, and apply to opportunities. Push your dreams; don’t let anything stop you from doing anything great for the world. Simply do well, live well and work hard."

Forbes
Someone had already done a good job at profiling this amazing entrepreneur, Olatorera Oniru, so I thought of reposting the article here. Olatorera Oniru was born to Chief Dr. Femi Majekodunmi and Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi in Ibadan, Oyo State, while she is married to Adedapo Oniru. My gratitude goes to the original poster of this story. cheesy

Just on a lighter note, I came across this excerpt from Tatler, a UK magazine. cheesy

“THE NIGERIANS HAVE ARRIVED!....and London is paying attention.” TATLER UK | By David Jenkins | NOVEMBER 12, 2013

You might not know Tatler, but you should. It’s one of Britain’s more upscale society magazines – which is really shorthand for elevated gossip. So when they make the point that a new set of “young moneyed Nigerians” have arrived, we pay attention.

According to Tatler, “Nigerians spend 300 million pounds annually at British Universities and schools” and they also note we are investing over 250 million pounds in British property every year. And they wouldn’t be the British press if they didn’t know, amongst other more pointed snarky statements, that “All of which might seem jarring from a country of 170 million people, 70 per cent of whom live on under £ 1.25 a day.”

Okay, so another excerpt:

"…the budding oil and property mogul Rotimi Alakija – whose mother, Folorunsho Alakija, is the richest black woman in the world (oil) and dropped £100m on four flats in One Hyde Park (‘She didn’t mess around,’ says Vedelago, who helped sell them to her) – tells me a Nigerian champagne war in an American club ended with the winner spending £1.1 m, though Rotimi Alakija certainly wasn’t there: "‘That’s just silly. It’s not part of who I am.”

The late Right Honourable Sir Adeyemo Alakija KBE, the Bariyun of Ake and Woje Ileri of Ife, was an accomplished gentleman. A distinguished lawyer, politician and businessman, with a passion for the arts and the written word.

https://literaticlothing.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/3-860x572.jpg

He was born into the family of Marculino sometimes called Elemeji and Maxmilliana Assumpcao - the youngest of the seven children in the family. His father was of Egba ancestry, and his mother was the daughter of Alfa Cyprian Akinosho Tairu of Oyo. Cultural awareness & self-assertiveness led his family to abandon their assimilated Portuguese name in favour of their native one, Alakija. His father was a scion of the principal branch of the family of Jiberu, King of Ikija, a province of the kingdom of Abeokuta, Southern Nigeria, where he was born in 1884.

https://i2.wp.com/www.proudlyoruba.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/adeyemo.jpg?resize=279%2C395

The man who is often credited by historians for the political unity of the Yoruba in the modern era, was the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, an Ijebu man, but his quest was greatly aided by no less a person than Sir Adeyemo Alakija, a Saro (descendants of returnee ex-slaves from Brazil).

Sir Adeyemo Alakija, served as a member of the Nigerian legislative council for 9 years starting in 1933. In 1942, he became a member of the Governor's Executive Council. Alakija was also president of the Yoruba pan-cultural group known as Egbe Omo Oduduwa from 1948 until his death in 1952.

When the Daily Times Newspaper started on June 1, 1926, published by the Nigerian Printing and Publishing Company, Sir Adeyemo Alakija became the first Chairman of the Board, while Ernest Ikoli became the first editor, who wrote the first editorial. And for this, he will forever be remembered, as the moving spirit among the founding fathers of the Daily Times of Nigeria.

In 1945, Adeyemo Alakija was knighted— an honour shared with his wife Ayodele (who became Lady Alakija), and who, for many years after the death of her husband in 1952, served on the Board of Directors of The Daily Times of Nigeria.

Alakija will also be remembered as an aristocrat, a great social elite, first indigenous Chairman of the Island Club, Lagos traditionalist, sportsman, philanthropist, a founding member and Vice President of the Nigeria Football Association in 1933. One of his daughters Titi, was married to the former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. His grandson is Kojo Annan.

Law, politics and journalism apart, Alakija was a man of great learning and high stature in esoteric orders of Masonic Ontology. As a Freemason, he was the first Nigeria District Grandmaster of the English constitution. Similarly, he will be remembered as the Master in Nigeria’s Masonic history, who reigned three times in Lodge Scotia —a leader member of the Scottish Constitution.

Among his colleagues were Dr. Henry Carr, Dr. Magnus Macaulay, Mr. Justice S. Bankole Rhodes, Chief Adegunle Soetan, The Rt. Revd.Adelakun Howells, former Anglican Bishop of Lagos and Sir Kofoworola Abayomi, first president of the association of Lagos titled chiefs.

In the divine sector however Sir Adeyemo will be remembered as the foundation president of the Cathedral Torch Bearers’ Association, Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, which was founded September 1942 and remains the most senior social male organization of the Cathedral Church of Christ, Lagos. Here perhaps we should draw the curtain on the life and times of the honourable Sir Adeyemo Alakija. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adeyemo_Alakija

This is a statement from Laolu Akande,Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity to the President.

Nigeria produces the best in every way, its citizens continue to shine in various ways around the world, and as we continue to do what is right in public service, the country is bound to reach the top globally as a people, according to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo was speaking at the Presidential Villa where he received Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, Houston, US-based Nigerian doctor who successfully led a medical team that operated on a foetus, winning US and global acclaim for the feat.

In a rare medical feat that drew global applause, Olutoye brought out a foetus from a mother-Margaret Boemer’s womb to remove a tumour from the foetus, and then restored the unborn baby to the womb successfully. The mother then continued to carry the pregnancy to term, and later on, delivered the baby safely and well. She named her Lynlee Hope.

Osinbajo told Olutoye who was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by members of his family including his wife and parents that “our country continues to shine in various ways, your achievement is remakable in every sense. People are bound to wonder. It’s the kind that fables are made of. And this is from someone who is Nigerian-trained.”

According to the Acting President, “this country can be well run, we produce the best in every way, but it will take a lot of doing, by good men and women. This is what i have learnt in the past over two years here. If we do the right things, day by day, we’ll change and improve the Nigerian situation significantly.”

He continued, “the problem is not the about the availability of resources, but its the management,” recalling how it is that the Federal Government is now doing more when funds are scarce than in the days when oil was selling at over $100 per barrel.

“When we were making over a $100 per barrel, we were owing oil JVC cash calls, not able to pay salaries and owing contractors. Now that we are down in earnings by 60%, we have sorted out the problem of cash calls and are able to support states to pay salaries.”

Speaking earlier, Dr. Olutoye attributed his medical successes in the US to his Nigerian training and education up till the university. He is a graduate of Medicine from the then University of Ife.

“All we have achieved from primary to university is from Nigeria, and I believe that Nigeria will surpass what we have achieved out there."

The late Chief Antonio Deinde Fernandez was a very deft diplomat, who was also instrumental to the Bangui Agreements of 1997. He has denied having any links with the Nkomati Accords signed in 1984 between Mozambique and South Africa, to which some have given him credits. He gave brilliant speeches at the United Nations, and below is an excerpt:

Mr. Fernandez (Central African Republic) I take pleasure in congratulating Mr. Opertti on his election to the presidency of the General Assembly at its fifty-third session, and I pledge my delegation’s full cooperation. I commend his predecessor, Mr. Udovenko, for bringing the fifty-second session of the General Assembly to a successful conclusion.

I take great pleasure in expressing my pride in our Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan. His leadership and many achievements during the short period of his tenure are highly commendable. Just as this session of the General Assembly coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it also coincides, providentially, with the fiftieth anniversary of the commencement of peacekeeping operations by the United Nations.

These coincidences are striking because, while one was envisaged in the Charter of our Organization and was the subject of painstaking negotiations, the other was a chance development, not having been envisaged in the Charter. Yet both have had a profound effect on the influence of the United Nations in global affairs and on the perception of the Organization by those whom it was established to serve and who were identified in the opening words of the Charter as “We the peoples of the United Nations”.

https://thewillnigeria.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/ANTONIO.png

The double celebration this year should also enable us to appreciate better the interrelationship between human rights and peacekeeping. There can be no question of human rights being enjoyed in a situation of conflict. Put another way, conflicts create conditions for the most outrageous violations of human rights, since, contrary to all international law and rationality, the most vulnerable in society — children, women and the aged — are often targeted and deprived of the most basic of human rights, the right to life.

As we define and refine our Organization’s responsibilities in peacekeeping, which, by common consent, is now taken in its broadest sense to mean the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts, let us always be conscious that the universal enjoyment of human rights, one of the major aspirations of humanity, cannot and will not be achieved unless we devote as much effort to the elimination of the conditions that provoke the violation of those rights.

I believe that it is with this fact in mind that international organizations, whether global, regional or sub-regional, have been devoting considerable time, to devising effective means of preventing, managing and resolving conflicts in their various area of competence. Of course, the United Nations, with its unique role as the only global Organization invested with authority for the maintenance of international peace and security, is, appropriately, taking the lead in these efforts….

https://www.9jas.com/wp-content/uploads/photo-gallery/late_Ambassador_Chief_Antonio_Oladeinde_Fernandez_photos_15.jpg

-In 1987, his American wife of 25 years, Barbara J. Fernandez, filed for divorce, and the proceedings of the case was at the Supreme Court of the State of Connecticut (Barbara Fernandez v. Antonio Deinde Fernandez (13283) and the case ‘involved the applicability of the doctrine of diplomatic immunity to an action for marital dissolution and equitable property distribution.’

As at the time of the divorce, Barbara Fernandez stated ‘an international businessman and diplomat who has admitted to being one of the richest men in Africa. He heads dozens of companies, and I believe his net worth exceeds $75 million.’ She (plaintiff) also stated that, in her opinion ‘the defendant could easily sell or transfer assets that are relevant to her claims for relief.’ (Fernandez vs. Fernandez).

-Ambassador Antonio Deinde Fernandez ‘claimed diplomatic immunity by virtue of his status as an ambassador to the United Nations for the People’s Republic of Mozambique’, and moved that the court dismiss the entire suit for lack of personal jurisdiction. A waiver was later provided, and the full text of the waiver went thus, providing: ‘Limited Waiver of Immunity.’ ‘Pursuant to Article 32 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the People’s Republic of Mozambique hereby waives the immunity extended by the United States of America to Ambassador Antonio Deinde Fernandez under the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to the following limited and restricted extent only…’

One very unique thing about this Yoruba high chief is that unlike many other moneybags in Nigeria today, he did not make his money in Nigerian public office, but rather by working as a suave and most talented diplomat for other African nations of the globe, at a time when IBB and others were struggling over coups to rule Nigeria, he was already dealing with governments one-on-one.

https://i0.wp.com/www.thescoopng.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Nigerian-Billionaire-Oluwo-Antonio-Deinde-Fernandez-Is-Dead-Aged-79-Years-.png?resize=373%2C330

It is quite unfortunate that quite little is known about him (haha, I know how much I wrote on Adenuga na…lol!) because of intense privacy (which he has every right to), and what that means is that we may never know his real worth.

At any rate, I stick to Forbes and Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index which lists Aliko Dangote as the richest black person on the third planet in the Solar System. Maybe a day will come when the Big Masquerade, the Afobaje (Kingmaker), the Custodian of Prosperity & Panache, Olori Ogboni Agba (Supreme Ogboni Chief) and Olori Oluwo of Lagos, will come out and displace the Kano tycoon. If that day comes, this piece will be rewritten.

Let’s take a good look at some of his titles, honours and awards (he is a tribal Yoruba chief and said to be one of the most prominent members of the Ogboni Confraternity):

His Excellency, Ambassador (Chief) Antonio Deinde Fernandez:

-His Imperial Highness Garsan Fulanin Kano (Kano State, Nigeria).

-Baron of Dudley (England). -Grand Officier de l’Ordre National du Leopard (Grand Officer of the National Order of the Leopard, the Democratic Republic of Congo)

-Grand Officier de l’Ordre du Merite Centrafricain (Grand Officer of the Order of Merit, Central African Republic).

-Grand Officier de l’Ordre du Mono (Grand Officer of the Order of Mono, Togo).

-Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Merite du Gabon (Commander of the National Order of Merit, Gabon).

-Officier du Ouissam Alaouite (Officer of the Ouissam Alaouite, Morocco where the descendants of the Alaouite dynasty rule as kings. The present is King Sidi Mohammed VI)

Thanks for your time.

Someeone had posted a tribute to the late Chief Antonio Deinde Fernandez a few years ago. I do not think it could have been done better. cool So I am reposting it here, hopefully with the kind permission of Iyaniwura, the gifted wordsmith.

Iyaniwura123:
He is a Billionaire. Reputed to have not one, but 6 private jets. He owns a chateau in France, once occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor Of France. He is a friend Of Mobutu. Ally Of Kofi Annan. Associate Of Mandela.

I Call Him 'The Emperor of Blinding Swagger'. Terrific Swagger. He is so classy that when he enters a restaurant to eat, everyone else must leave because he takes over entire restaurants for the night, just to avoid others. (Chai! Poor Man Don Suffer). Of all the richest Nigerians I know, none comes close to this man when it comes to the level of Style, 'Tooshness' & Money-Backed Aloofness. But who is he? How did he make his money? His marriages? Why did he leave his house for a Hotel?

Welcome to the world of one of Africa's richest men: His Excellency, Oluwo Antonio Oladeinde Fernandez, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative, the Apesin Ola of the Egba clan (see his writings to the President of the United Nations Security Council and United Nations Secretary General on behalf of President Ange-Félix Patassé of the Central African Republic in 1998).

When it comes to the most impressive and exuberant display of the splendour of wealth, Fernandez dusts them all -by miles. The name 'Fernandez' is Portuguese in origin and shows that he is of the popular Fernandez family of Lagos. Historical accounts show that the Fernandezes were originally descendants of freed slaves from Brazil, where Portuguese is the official language.

Some of the first modern-styled buildings in Lagos were built by the Fernandezes, and these buildings are known for their spectacular Brazilian architecture. Portuguese navigators were also the first European explorers to reach Lagos State. Actually, they gave the state the name 'Lagos'

His wealth has dazed and fazed many, and left even many more speechless. Okay, enough of that. Let's get some bits on him:

-He is the perfect combination of a diplomat (you can also refer to that as ambassador), businessman and yes, a gentleman. He is multilingual, tall and dark (yeah, take a look at the pix again, will you?)

https://www.voice-online.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/455/fernandez.jpg

-Even though he is Nigerian, he was appointed the Permanent Representative of Central African Republic (CAR) at the United Nations in 1997 (ain't that classy?, but with the current turmoil in CAR, with former President Francois Bozize fleeing the nation, things are hazy). -

Fernandez is said to have interests in the CAR's oil industry (at a time, he was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Central African Republic). That does not include his bauxite (for aluminum) exports, gold mines (in Angola) and diamonds pits.

He has an oil company called Petro Inett which obtained a 50% share with South African-based Energy Africa Limited in a deal with the state oil company for exploration rights in a 4,700 km2 area of Angola’s coast in 1996. He also has shares in View, Sandcat Petroleum, Sanantonio, Goldfields, Voguehope, Grantdalem Inuola, Sandcat Goldfields (now I understand those two cats...lol), Woods and Petro Inett Equatorial Guinea.

-Before then, he had served as the Special Adviser to the President of Mozambique on International Economic Matters. From 1992-1995, he was the Ambassador-at-Large for the Republic of Togo and Angola.

-He was also once the Consul for Benin Republic (then Republic of Dahomey) (1966), made the Economic Advisor to the Angolan Government in 1982 (just for perspective, only Nigeria produces more oil than Angola in Africa, shey you gerrit?). To be specific, he was a long-time adviser to President José Eduardo dos Santos of Angola (he’s been ruling since 1975).

In 1984, he was the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the United Nations. At a point, he was a Deputy Minister of Finance in Swaziland.

-He has houses in Kano, built a tower for himself in Lagos (where he was born in 1936), New York (where he is said to stay almost permanently), Scotland, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. But that’s not all, he has accounts in the Cayman Islands, France, Switzerland (I love that country joor), Ireland, Hong Kong, Scotland and the United States. Don’t ask me of Nigeria.

-He surrounds himself with the finest, classiest and the most exquisite things that money can buy. One of them was his luxurious yatch - "Yemoja."

https://cdn.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Fernandez8-300x156.jpg

https://cdn.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Fernandez11-298x300.jpg

In a divorce case with one of his former wives, it was revealed that he splashed 200,000 British Pounds on his seven-storey townhouse to buy 1,000 books of gold leaf to ‘toosh’ up the already ‘tooshed’ cornices and balustrades.

-A high chief of the Ogboni Confraternity, he is highly revered in his Yorubaland and his family motto is: Aguntan meji kii mumi ninu koto kan na (see images for the insignia). Okay, what that simply means is that two rams cannot drink from the same container. Or some people will say, there cannot be two captains on a ship.

-He once married (some reports insist they were only romantically linked) the Erelu of Lagos, Abiola Dosumu but they fell apart and the Erelu of Lagos has since stopped using his name, Fernandez.

Today, he is married to a beauty from Kano State. Her name? Haleema, and has a daughter, Mahreyah. She is said to be of the Alhaji Muhammadu Maude (also known as Maude Tobacco) family of Kano. Alhaji Maude was the Presidential Liaison Officer for Kano State during the Shehu Shagari presidency. A wealthy businessman, he made attempts to become governor of Kano State in the 1980s but lost even though his campaign was one of the most colourful and was associated with the use of yan banga, local thugs.

In 2012, he denied reuniting with Aduke, his former wife. The chief thundered: ‘It’s a big lie. It will never happen, even in a million years.’

-He owns one of the most luxurious homes in Kano State (with one of the largest horse stables and farms in Nigeria, one of the Boko Haram battles in January 2012 during which the pregnant wife of one of the Boko Haram leaders was reportedly killed, was close to his property). But the house is now said to be falling apart. Well, he doesn’t stay at home!

He finished from Cambridge University and Columbia University (business degree) and has been using private jets long before people like Dangote and what is the name of that man again o…. ehen! Adenuga! started dreaming of a billion dollars.

https://cdn.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Antonio-Deinde-Fernandez1-300x227.jpg

-He has been in international business since 1966, so billions are not new to him. He has direct contacts to some of the most powerful world leaders, business executives and entrepreneurs. He is said to be very close to leaders like Nelson Mandela and George Walker Bush -and they address themselves by the first names. He surely pulls the strings.

Late Chief Emmanuel Oyedele Ashamu the Maye of Oyo, and Chairman of Ashamu Group of Companies, was a wealthy land owner and Oyo aristocrat, who featured prominently in the Nigerian business sector, from the 1960s - 90s. He attended Durbar School, Oyo, and the Grammar School, Ilesha, before going further to study Pharmacy at Yaba Higher College, in 1951.

His career started as a pharmacist at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Lagos. He later left to join Lion Chemists as a manager. Due to his background as a trained pharmacist, he set up Industrial Chemists Limited, within the city of Lagos. He rose to become one of the most prominent businessmen in Africa, with interests in agriculture, banking, transportation and real estate.

In the 60s, he delved into the real estate sector and was involved in land development, in areas which included Ire-Akari Estate, Isolo in Lagos.
His properties go beyond Nigeria, to United Kingdom and the United States of America. He was also the owner of Igbeti Marble Mining Company in Oyo State.

Igbeti Mining Industries Limited (IMI) was later taken over by Oyo State Government in 1978, and renamed Nigeria Marble Mining Company Limited. The state govt then changed the shareholding structure to a different pattern - 30 per cent was awarded to Oyo State Government, 25 per cent to IMI (i.e. Ashamu's company), 20 per cent to Federal Government, 10 per cent to Local Government and 15 per cent to Technical Partners.

https://i2.wp.com/von.gov.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/marble-design.jpg?resize=696%2C298&ssl=1

Ashamu later established Oke Afa Farms in 1970, which was the largest poultry in the Nigeria at that time. From there, he set up Oyo Feeds and Premier Farms. At the height of its' success, the business employed up to 1,000 people.

Premier Farms specialised in Maize plantation at its Okaka Farm, in Ikoyi near Igbo-Ora, Oyo state. Most of its products were sold to its' sister company Oyo Feeds, which turned it to animal feed and then resold much of it to their parent company - Oke Afa farms. Oke Afa then sold commercial meat and chicken, to eateries and the military.

Unfortunately, by the late 1970s, these agro-business ventures were hampered by import restrictions that curtailed the availability of feed ingredients. Several years later, Chief Ashamu signed technical services agreements with foreign firms to collaborate in various business undertakings. The foreign firms would provide technical consultation, management and sizeable financial commitments to his businesses, in exchange for a proportion of the shares of these companies.

By the time Chief Ashamu died on 20 August 1992, his estimated net worth was $50 million US Dollars.

Craig Thomas an American scholar from Harvard, was so fascinated by Ashamu's style of management and backward integration, that he wrote a whole excerpt on Ashamu Holdings, in a management book titled Strategic Management in Developing Countries, edited by James E. Austin and Tomas O. Kohn, which was published by Simon & Schuster, in 1998. Chief Ashamu's philantropic gestures was well documented, and it even extended to foreign institutions abroad.

His son, Samson Ashamu, attended Brown, graduating in 1979 with a B.A. in economics. That same year, the Chief and Mrs. E. O. Ashamu donated the funds to build Ashamu Dance Studio in the building, formerly occupied by the Colgate Hoyt Pool. The studio, along with the Isabelle Russek Leeds Theatre, was dedicated on April 21, 1979, with a ceremony, followed by a week long festival of performances, workshops, and recitals.

The dedication plaque outside the Ashamu Dance Studio reads, “In loving and affectionate memory of our beloved mother and grandmother, Madam Adeoti Ashamu….”

The Ashamu family’s commitment to Brown continued over the years. Throughout the 1980s, Samson and his wife Leslie donated Egungun costumes, ceremonial robes, and accompanying dress-related materials to Brown’s Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology. Two of the pieces were included in the museum’s extraordinary international textiles exhibit, “Warp Speeds,” in 2004. Samson Ashamu died on July 20, 1995.

Following Emmanuel Ashamu’s death in 1992, several pieces of fabric and ceremonial clothing were left in the possession of a personal family friend. Just last year, the items were given to Brown’s Department of Theatre, Speech and Dance for preservation. http://today.brown.edu/articles/2009/02/ashamu

When Sir (Chief) Theophilus Adebowale Omotosho set up Bond Chemist Limited in 1976, as a retail outlet for pharmaceutical products, he had no idea that the little seed would one day become a giant tree, in the corporate sector. By March 1988, the company had delved into full-scale manufacturing of drugs and medications, at its factory site in Awe, in Oyo State. It was then renamed Bond Chemical Industries Limited.

While the factory was developed in Oyo State, the corporate head office was left in Lagos. Bond Chemical Industries Limited has expanded more than five times its' original size at inception, in terms of structure, equipment and workforce along with its diverse range of qualitative pharmaceutical products. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programmes, the Asiwaju Debo Omotoso Tertiary Education Fund was launched to cater for the less privileged students in their community.
