PoliticsNdigbo: A New Direction By C. Don Adinuba by lawbabs(op): 10:29am On Apr 09, 2015
Twenty-four hours after the historic March 28 presidential election, my phone began to ring ceaselessly for the next two days. You would think, on the basis of the torrent of congratulatory messages, that I had transformed into Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). But almost two weeks after Buhari’s well deserved victory, I had found it difficult to write even an article on the victory, a supreme irony for someone who crafted over 30 enthusiastic articles on Buhari’s campaign. This is no mystery. I am deeply worried by the absence of my Igbo people in the electoral victory map, all the more so since most of my articles on the presidential election were written from the Igbo perspective.

It is unlikely that an Igbo could become the next Senate President because there is no Igbo APC senator. There is something fundamentally wrong with a system that would not allow someone like Chris Ngige to return to the Senate. Ngige would have been the natural Senate President. As things stand today, no Igbo is likely to head the executive arm of government or the legislative arm or the judiciary. This is not a great record for a majority ethnic group. Under outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan, the Igbo became the only majority ethnic group not to have a representative in the nation’s security council because Jonathan did not find any of them fit in the last two years to be the chief of defence staff or to head the army or the navy or the air force or the police force or the Department of State Security (DSS) or the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA); Ambassador Nwana who was the most senior officer in the line to become the NIA director general was bypassed and retired.

It is not flattering that the Ohaneze leadership could not pick up intelligence that President Jonathan was a tough product to market, hence its unwavering support for a candidate who, far from developing Igboland, was in cahoots with a majority of inelegant beings from our place to ruin Igboland. It smacks of awful intelligence failure on the part of Igbo think tanks that none of them knew that the United States, European Union and even Chad and Niger Republic were up in arms against Jonathan on account of his grand failure to deal with large scale insecurity, his indifference to unprecedented graft and his inability to move the country in the right direction.

I had argued before the election that anytime two of the country’s three majority ethnic groups came together in politics, they would carry the day, citing the instances of the coalition government in the First Republic, the working accord between the Nigerian People’s Party (NPP) and the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the Second Republic and the map of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) electoral victory since the restoration of democracy in 1999. True, the Igbo-dominated All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was part of the grand coalition which formed the APC, but ex governor Peter Obi and APGA national chairman, Victor Umeh, opted out abruptly and then mounted the most vicious hate campaign ever seen in the country’s history against the APC. Putting to effective use his position as chairman of the Conference of Southeast Governors, Obi embarked on religious and tribal propaganda against the party.

Even otherwise rational people in the South-east and the Igbo world generally began to internalise the propaganda that the APC was the main promoter of Boko Haram, Nigeria’s islamisation, etc. Both Obi and Umeh will for life bear the burden of their use of terrible propaganda to scheme their own people out of political relevance. We are now in a situation where almost every presidential candidate could feel that he or she could win without the Igbo vote. The APC will from May 29 become the government party, yet there is not one single Igbo APC senator that can attend any of its senate caucus meetings. Ironically this is a party that could have easily chosen an Igbo as the presidential running mate if only the Igbo had shown a bit of interest in it. And this candidate would have been now not just vice-president-elect but president in waiting!

The good news is that deeply thoughtful Igbo people like Festus Odimegwu, Pat Utomi, Charles Soludo, Oby Ezekwesili and Bart Nnaji did not capitulate to the mass mind programming of PDP operatives. They were later joined by ex governor Ikedi Ohakim and his Igbo Conversation Group which included erstwhile ex House of Representatives member Nze Chidi Duru, ex PDP senatorial aspirant Chike Maduekwe and all factional Ohaneze factional leaders, whose stout refusal to compromise managed to reduce the millions of votes the PDP usually awarded itself in the South-east.

Truth is that Jonathan could have won the presidential vote in the South-east on March 28, but not with the same margin which was proclaimed officially. PDP operatives used the police and army to write false election results, and in some places tried to kill those who resisted the perfidy. A perfect example is what took place in my hometown of Ihiala in Anambra State where a daring attempt was made in broad daylight before over 1,000 people to assassinate the Nestoil chairman, Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi.

With the governorship election coming up on Saturday, PDP elements have resumed the task of setting up the Igbo against the Yoruba in Lagos State. Capitalising on an unfortunate statement by the Oba of Lagos about possible consequences if the considerable Igbo population in the state should vote against APC candidate Akinwunmi Ambode, the PDP has been trying to give the false impression that the Oba is a card carrying APC member who speaks on behalf of the party. The APC is bound to win the gubernatorial vote. No one should deny the Igbo the opportunity to be part of this victory by forcing them to take sides with a losing party. The Igbo lost out at the national level by wasting their votes on the PDP on March 28. They should not repeat the same mistake on April 11, otherwise we will be suffering double jeopardy.

We have a big stake in Lagos, Nigeria’s most strategic state. More Igbo people live in Lagos than any other place in the world, and Ndigbo prosper here more than any other place. The Igbo and the Yoruba have been living in harmony with each other, and the relationship should be deepened in the overriding national interest. Good a thing that leading Igbo individuals and groups like Eze Igbo of Lagos, Igbos In Commerce and Senator Annie Okonkwo who voted for the PDP on March 28 are daily endorsing the APC candidate in droves. Ambode will certainly win, and it is in the interest of our people to identify with him early enough.

What is axiomatic now is that the Igbo need to go into a new direction. The leaders who have emerged in recent years cannot engage in strategic thinking, an awful handicap in the 21st century. We must take our rightful place in the world.

PoliticsA Letter To Lagosians By Governor Fashola by lawbabs(op): 9:07pm On Apr 08, 2015
This is what I urge you to think about as you vote on Saturday – Read Governor Fashola’s Letter To Lagosians
Dear Lagosians,
First let me thank you all for turning out to vote on the 28th March 2015 and for doing so peacefully to make history by electing the All Progressives Congress candidates in the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Once again, I must address you as we approach Saturday’s elections, when you will be electing a Governor who will continue after me and consolidate on the progress we have built together.
You will also be electing members of the State House of Assembly who will make laws on your behalf to assist the Governor and his team in the Executive arm.
Although your votes will be cast for one political party or the other, let me remind you that you will actually be voting for your wellbeing, security, prosperity and future.
You will also be voting for the future of your children. You will be choosing candidates and a party that you will entrust your lives to.
Think hard, think clearly, think deeply. Ask yourselves a few questions.
Who has shown a better record and example of protecting and securing you between the political parties?
Which of the parties cares more when disasters happen?
What is the record of the parties as it relates to the promises they have made to you in the past?
Which of the parties do you see regularly and which one do you see once in a while?
Which of the parties do you see when your life or property is threatened by epidemics like Ebola or by unfortunate accidents like plane crashes?
Which of the parties is showing that you can become home-owners without knowing anybody?
Which party has responsibility for providing electricity for you, and which one is taking up the responsibility to light up your streets and communities at night?
Which of them cares more about your children and their safety?
Indeed ask yourself; which of the parties threatened you with thugs on that sad Monday of March 16th and which is seeking to protect you by supporting the police; with patrol vehicles, fuel and other equipment?
Ask yourself when last you saw the Federal Fire Service in Lagos. The proud men and women of the Lagos State Fire Service have taken over admirably.
Ask yourself who should be supporting the police and who is actually doing it?
Dear Lagosians, your choice of who to vote for will be easy if you answer these questions within yourself honestly.
Indeed, you have clear choices to make between parties that use your resources to develop your society and community on the one hand, and the party that chooses to bring money to you for distribution when election beckons.
So you can choose between schools for your children, hospitals for your community, roads for your transportation or in the alternative, you can choose to have these services monetized once in four years.
Remember, that choices have consequences and your vote will decide the choice that shapes your lives.
Dear Lagosians, it is tempting to take the right and opportunity to vote for granted. It is tempting to think that it is too much trouble.
I agree that the process can be made much easier. But it is no excuse to refuse to vote.
Out of 5.8 million registered voters and 3.8 million PVC collections, only about 1.5 million turned out to vote, on the 28th March 2015.
Think of all the pain, the effort, the sleepless nights it took to get the PVCs to you. Think of the best way to show that the effort was not wasted or in vain.
It seems to me that the best way is to have all these 3.8 Million voters come out to vote.
By refusing to vote, you surrender decision making to a few and you will be bound by the consequences of your choices.
By refusing to vote, you do a great disservice to many who have lived before you, who fought very hard at great personal costs to themselves, to earn you this right.
By refusing to vote, you dishonour the sacrifice of patriots before you who fought for the right to vote.
Remember that when they were fighting for the right to vote, they were not fighting for yesterday, they were fighting for today and tomorrow.
They have handed today to you and I, can we secure tomorrow for the next generation?
Remember that since the capital of Nigeria was moved from Lagos 24 years ago in December 1991, Lagos has been abandoned by the Federal Government.
Ask yourself when the last major new road in Lagos was built by the Federal Government. It was the 3rd Mainland Bridge completed in 1990.
The assets the Federal Government left behind almost became a burden but for our resilience to maintain them. Today the Federal Government is owing Lagos N51 Billion which remains unpaid.
This is not in accord with the spirit of the promise made to Lagos when the Federal Government first declared Abuja as the capital in 1976.
The Head-of-State at the time, the late Gen Murtala Muhammed, said then and I quote him:
“…Lagos will, in the foreseeable future, remain the nation’s commercial capital and one of its nerve centres. But in terms of servicing the present infrastructure alone the committed amount of money and effort required will be such that Lagos State will not be ready to cope.
(But we have coped at great sacrifice)
“It will even be unfair to expect the state to bear this heavy burden on its own. It is therefore necessary for the Federal Government to continue to sustain the substantial investment in the area. The port facilities and other economic activities in the Lagos area have to be expanded.
“There is need in the circumstances for the Federal Government to maintain a special defence and security arrangement in Lagos which will henceforth be designated a special area. These arrangements will be carefully worked out and written into the new constitution. Kaduna and Port Harcourt are to be accorded similar status and designated as Special Areas…”
Sadly, no Federal Government and indeed not the PDP Government has done anything to redeem that promise for the 16 years it was in power or to protect Lagos.
Instead of assisting Lagos, they attacked her. If you remember FERMA, in 2006, the same PDP seized your Local Government money and resisted the attempt to bring Government closer to you by creating more local Governments.
On Monday 16th March 2015, the same PDP continued in their tradition of assaulting Lagos. Their supporters took over a major road in Lagos and threatened your peace and security.
On Wednesday 18th March 2015, the President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari came to Lagos and said Lagos will receive compensation for the role she has played in maintaining Federal Government Assets.
Yesterday on Tuesday the 7th of April 2015, he was here in Lagos in his first political engagement since he became President-Elect and he reiterated his commitment to support Lagos.
This is what I will vote for. This is what I urge you to think about as you vote on Saturday.
This is the place that every Nigerian calls his home. It is the home of displaced people. It is the place where the homeless arrive and are made welcome.
It is the place where generations of Nigerians have arrived without knowing anybody but have, through the opportunities and inclusion, become somebody.
This is the place where the Late Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya and Owelle Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe consummated the handshake across the Niger and played politics without bitterness.
Tell those who try to divide us that our greatest strength has always been our diversity.
Tell them that you feel safe here, and that I have continuously assured you of your safety as the basis of our mutual co-existence.
Tell them that our waterways have been assets of prosperity and sustenance, for transport, recreation and fishing and they will remain so.
Let nobody now attempt to re-write that history for you.
When they reel out false statistics about Lagos, please ask them the statistics about the places they governed for 16 years.
When they reel out statistics, please remind them that those statistics don’t stand in isolation, they are the burden of a whole nation and many parts of West Africa that Lagos state bears.
When they promise you heaven and earth, remember their broken promises on power, security and many more.
Ask them to show you a plan, if they can produce one, which is doubtful, ask them whether they have implemented it elsewhere.
Tell them that you have seen the Lagos Development plan for 2012 – 2025, that the Lagos Light Rail Project, the Adiyan Water Works Phase II of 75 Million gallons a day, the solar power for all schools and many more which are part of the plans for you and your children and which are already being implemented.
Tell them that you will vote to keep a plan that you can see, that is already working, instead of a plan that you have not seen.
Ask them what happened to Vision 20:20, to the 7-Point Agenda and to Transformation.
Tell them that your bird in hand will not be traded for a dozen unseen birds in the bush.
Tell them that this election is not about money, tell them that it is not about ethnicity and it is not about religion.
Tell them that this election is about the place you call your home, the place you earn your living and the place where your investments are the safest.
Tell them that you will not play ethnic or religious politics with your survival. Tell them that you will not vote with anger.
Tell them that you will vote with common sense and for experience.
Tell them that you have seen Lagos survive without Federal support, and you wish to see her flourish with Federal support.
That will be the most historic thing you will have done, putting Lagos in the centre with your votes.
History and tomorrow beckons. Don’t turn your backs.
Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN

PoliticsRe: President Goodluck Jonathan Will Win On Saturday - Abdullahi Maibasira by lawbabs: 9:45am On Mar 27, 2015
ochejoseph:
Abdullahi Hussaini MaiBasira is the National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Director of Youth Mobilisation of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization. He recently talked to journalists on the youth preparation of this month’s general elections and how well the PDP’s Youth wing has prepared and galvanised support for President Jonathan's re-election nationwide.

[img][/img]

Q. What is the focus of the youth wing of your party in this month's general election?

As youth leader of my party, our present focus and direction is simply that candidates of our party should emerge victorious at all levels at the polls. Our work is to mobilize and ensure the re-election of Mr. President and to principally galvanise youth support nationwide.

Q. The Directorate of Youths have been traveling round the Country galvanising the Youths for the President, What is the response of Youths based on your interactions country wide?

Yes, we held several side-line programs for the campaigns. We held town hall meetings in Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Calabar, Owerri, Akure, Ilorin, Lagos, Kaduna and our other officers were detailed to Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau and Nasarawa. We also did stop overs in Zamfara, Kebbi and Ekiti. Some of these were youth regional meetings while some were States. We engaged youths on social media through the “PDPyouthtweetmeet” with over 2.3 million reach, We also mobilized members of the Youth Campaign Committee for all the Presidential Campaign rallies. The 2015 Youth Campaign Committee will go down in history as one with the most assembly of youth and student leaders. We liaised consistently with the youth and students movements and we also got endorsements of youth leaders from other political parties who joined us in Lagos. We convened an interactive session with youth groups and we had fruitful engagements with our peers and colleagues. Other groups too have held some programs for youths and we are satisfied that we are all on board for the same success.

Why do you think young people should vote for President Goodluck Jonathan?

If you take a close look at his policy initiatives and thrust, you will find out that the administration has consistently placed young people in all of its interventions. Federal Government led interventions in agricultural, ICT, education, public health, works and infrastructure, employment drive such as the Graduate Internship Scheme that allows corporate and private enterprises mentor young people and prepare them for full scale employment, and channelling funds oil subsidy funds into youWIN and SureP programs. The budgetary allocation to the education sector in particular has increased and has allowed for the creation of additional tertiary universities bringing to total one federal university in each state of the federation. All these signify a broad and concerted approach towards enhancing youth policy objectives in government. We are also confident that he would do more in this regard after his re – election so that these policies will be consolidated and strengthened.
What is your take on the recommended 30% inclusion of Youth in governance by the National Conference?
I am for it. We had advocated for it. We shall work towards its full realization. At the CONFAB, we were represented by 18 young people whom we must commend. They pushed home our call for youth inclusion in governance and it was part of the recommendations in the final report. Commendably, the Federal Executive Council chaired by Mr. President has adopted the report and that is the first step. This party, the President and our leaders will advance any genuine and constructive effort that will strengthen the involvement of young people in our democracy. This strategy will open up new gates to ensure that more young people are deliberately involved not only governance but would also expand the horizon for mentorship and leadership recruitment.
The place of useful youth in country in the next 20 years is without a doubt important, but how do you reconcile it with the fact that 60% of the thugs or miscreants are youth?
First as a party and the ideals of President Jonathan, we denounce, deplore, abhore and reject all forms of political violence. Though I have not seen any empirical evidence to concede to this assertion, I am confident that given increased awareness of the populace, improved credibility in our electoral system and the increasing involvement of young people seeking elective office, and subsequently being appointed, this tendency will be greatly reduced in the future. The fact is, this nation has no greater resource than its youth, and that is why education, youth empowerment, capacity building and promotion of self – reliance should and has been the centre piece of PDP and the present administration. It has been stated by the year 2030, Nigeria’s most important asset will not be our crude reserves, or mineral deposits or agricultural capacity, it will be in our nation’s capacity to harness the full potentials of its youthful population for economic development. By that time, I for one should have left the youth constituency by age but we presently have a responsibility to prepare for the future. That is what President Jonathan represents. That is what we shall work for and that is why the PDP should be re – elected.

What efforts are you making to ensure that non – violent elections?

We launched the no - violence campaign during our Youth interactive session in Sokoto State. We launched it because we believe that young people should not be involved in violence, we should actively play a part in the electoral process without engaging in conflict. And we have taken this message to all the other places where we subsequently went for our various town hall meetings with youths. We also informed youth leaders at the state level and the Presidential Campaign Committee members on the need to sensitize our supporters that we believe in one Nigeria and the survival of the country is very important to us all. Our candidate, the incumbent president has vowed that no shedding of blood is worth sacrificing for his ambition; and I believe for any other politician for that matter. So we believe that we should follow suit.

How much more should Nigerian youths be willing to sacrifice for the country, given the sacrifice the Nigerian youths has done over time without results?

I believe that nation building is a continuous process. Our founding fathers have played their parts, as a country we have had our challenges, we would simply have to play our part in keeping the eagle’s flag flying. Our diversity is both a great asset but also a call to continuously rectify our fault lines. As long as humanity exists, Nigeria will continue to exist because we have responsibility to the black race and the world. All of us young or small, big or small, male or female must continue to strive to ensure that this country continues to exist. In my opinion no sacrifice is too much in keeping Nigeria one. There is no country that does not have fault lines, we have to work on ours, solidify them and know that we don't have anywhere else to go and we have to work to meet the aspirations of our people and make sure our children inherit a better country, better than how we met it. I believe that the PDP is the only true Nigerian party that cut across every segment of the country, a party that embraces all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, ethnicity, norms, cultures or religion.
What are the prospects of the youth in the PDP?
It is bright. I'm the youngest National Youth Leader the party has ever had, and currently, the youngest Governor is PDP – Ramalan Yero and the youngest Governorship candidate is PDP – Umar Nasko. We have young men like Comrades Tony Nwolo, Onofiok Luke, Bello Ahmed Agwara, Kolade, Tony Nwoye, Ben Duntoye and many contesting on our platform for legislative houses. Many more aspired. By next year or the year after that, I would leave office and definitely another young man will also emerge. This party is youth friendly. Our President youth focused. We have consolidated the youth movement in the party, our prospects for a well - defined youth wing within the context of the organs of the party will be our post - election priority so that mentorship, succession planning and leadership identification will be institutionalized, planned and monitored.
What informed your decision to resign as the Speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament?
I was elected on 14th December 2011 and I resigned on 13th December 2014. I must give credit to President Jonathan who continued with the policy of the Youth Parliament after Late President Umaru Yar'adua. It shows a leader with vision and conscious of continuity with objective government policies. I am one of the products of the Parliament.
The fact is there was no rule of the Parliament requiring me to vacate office but as I resigned for three reasons. One was my belief that I cannot be a Youth Leader and the same time Speaker because the Parliament is non – partisan in structure. Two; because I have work to do galvanizing and mobilizing youths for the re – election of President Jonathan and the success of our party. And three, because I believe another young man can fill in the space and even perform better than me in taking the Parliament to the next level. I am still a member of the Parliament though.

How would you describe the forth coming elections?

First we are confident we will win. The PDP is a truly Nigerian Party. On the election, it is an election that, in my own opinion will consolidate our country's democracy and prepare us to face the challenges of overcoming our fault lines. This election will make Nigerians really appreciate democracy. It is about moving forward and enhancing our country’s prospects. It is about consolidating our hold on our economic growth to further translate it into full development. In our appraisal, I would rather suggest that we be objective than subjective.
We expect high turnout of voters, which is good for democracy and the confidence of our elected Leaders. Nigerians will participate in the process and appreciate the fact that democracy is here to stay and we must all work together to ensure that it stays

Q. What is your opinion on those calling for Change?

That is slogan of another party; the slogan and motto of my party - the PDP is “Power to the people” and I think that is what democracy signifies.

Jonathan has been smiting everyone that helped him in 2011. He insulted past presidents. He keeps behaving like a bast^rd to his elders. surrounded himself with noise makers and miscreant, empowered militia groups and criminals, who don't even know the history of PDP, who have wide mouth to curse and insult elders.

He will suffer the consequences alone unfortunately... GEJ - The damager of Nigeria!
