EducationWhy We Sacked 2,414 Teachers Employed By Ex-gov Ahmed –kwara Govt by Le124(op): 8:47am On Dec 26, 2020
Tunde Oyekola, Ilorin

Kwara State government has explained why it disengaged 2,414 teachers from the service of the State Universal Basic Education Board.

The teachers’ disengagement was announced in a statement titled, ‘Kwara govt takes stand on 2019 SUBEB workers, offsets pending seven months’ salaries. New employment portal opens January.’

The statement was signed by the Press Secretary, state Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mr Yakub Ali-Agan.

The statement indicted that the sacked teachers were recruited in the twilight of the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

The teachers were employed to teach English, Mathematics, and science subjects in junior secondary schools in the state.

However, the state government said although it had earlier screened the teachers and cleared 1,658 of them, it was later discovered that the majority of them were not qualified to teach.

The statement read, “For instance, it was discovered that some of the 1,658 [teachers] purportedly adjudged to be qualified did not, in fact they don’t have the required teaching certificates.

It was discovered that the teachers were engaged for subjects not covered in the executive approval, underscoring the unwholesome and impeachable nature of the entire process.

“Following from the above, the government has decided to start the employment process all over again in January 2021. The government will open a new application portal for all the 2,414 and any other eligible persons to apply for SUBEB teaching jobs in relevant subjects to be advertised. This effectively nullifies the controversial employment process of 2018/2019

The statement further explained that the decision to sack the teachers was built on justice and fairness to everyone, particularly taxpayers, and children, whose future depended on the quality of teaching they received at the elementary schools.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has directed the immediate payment of seven months’ salaries earlier withheld from 594 SUBEB teachers since June 2020.

“The salaries were paid on Thursday night on compassionate grounds as their employment status remains unofficial,” a government statement said on Thursday.

RomanceCan Your Spouse Regain Your Trust After Engaging In Extramarital Affairs? by Le124(op): 4:10pm On Dec 19, 2020
Our correspondent asked some couples if they would trust their repentant partners again after being unfaithful

He can never regain my trust

Annabel Onwuchekwa

It takes years to build trust. You slowly begin to know somebody; you become friends; lovers, then you get married. Marriage is when two strangers that came together as a couple to make a home begins to show their true characters. As a person, I cannot forgive my partner if he engages in extramarital affairs and he can never regain my trust. Even if I try to forgive, that trust is gone for life. With the trust gone, if he makes a statement, I would interpret it into 10 places. If he makes a move, I would doubt it. The worst thing you can do to your partner is to cheat on them. I can decide to stay (in the marriage) to keep my home but everything will change emotionally.

There wouldn’t be trust anymore

Oluwadare Agboola

It takes the heart of God to forgive. It would be very embarrassing if I catch my spouse red-handed or in the act or have solid evidence that she is having an extramarital affair. So, I wouldn’t stick out my head to say what I would do or would not do in such a situation but the relationship may not continue. Even if she repents, it is like stabbing somebody; the scar will still be there. There won’t be trust anymore. I don’t have to pretend about it.

I would trust him again
Olajumoke Otitoloju

Yes, my spouse will regain my trust because sometimes certain things push men into extramarital affairs. I would try to ask him what pushed him into that act. I would make him comfortable and try to check myself. Is there anything I am doing wrong that pushes him outside? Is there anything bothering him? I would try to know if I am not giving him attention and someone else is giving him. If there is anything I have noticed in myself, I would amend but definitely I would give him a second chance. At the same time, I would also guide myself. I would not leave any stone unturned anymore. Sometimes men don’t intend to engage in extramarital affairs; it’s situations that warrant it. He should also look thoroughly into those situations and see how we can work out things together. It takes two to tangle.
She would regain my trust

Toyin Okanlawon

Yes; my wife can regain my trust after engaging in extramarital affairs. I would also have to look into the factors that led her to such an act because going into an extramarital affair is a premeditated action. Though we are humans and it will hurt so much, we have to find a way around it and put our home in order. If trust is no longer there, there is nothing she would do that I would be pleased with. Forgiving her and letting her regain my trust will take a while but definitely we have to move on because of the family so that we don’t put it in disarray. I will first place her on ‘C-Caution’ to make her realise the gravity of what she did. Once she realises her fault, I would forgive and let go.

He would regain it on conditions

Adebimpe Arogundade

Yes, he can regain my trust based on certain conditions. Extramarital affairs do not start in a day, it’s a process of carelessness that leads to lust of the flesh. The greatest hurt one can get in marriage is for one to discover someone else is ‘sleeping with’ your spouse. It brings dishonour, shame, reproach and setback to the marriage. To regain that trust after the terrible scar has been inflicted, it will be at a cost and I will need grace to forget about it. One can forgive but to forget will require a special grace. To regain my trust, he needs to burn all bridges that connect him with the adulterous partner. He will have to carefully select his friends going forward, seek constant help and counsel from elders with proven testimony of long years of marriage. He also has to make it a daily routine to tell me, ”I love you”. By so doing, he will be buying my trust back.

It may end our marriage

Kola Abiola

First, it depends on the person involved because our characters differ as human beings. Some people can forgive, forget and continue to trust their partners while some will forgive, forget and yet have issues with trusting their partners. The mind drifts to the wrongdoing immediately the partner steps out of the house. Personally, l may end up not trusting my spouse again which might unfortunately lead to the dissolution of the marriage. Religiously, it is better to let go than have reservations towards someone.
The trust won’t remain the same

Bukola Abdulganiy

Trust, just like a shattered glass, can only be fixed or mended but can never be the same again. I cannot trust a cheating spouse again. Though I can forgive him, I can never forget let alone trust him. With time and his actions that show he is trying to earn my trust back, I can actually yield a little but I can’t trust him wholeheartedly again!

She deserves a second chance

Ameen Akeem

God forbid that this should happen. However, I believe that love supersedes all that we may think about. She deserves my forgiveness. No matter what, I am willing to let go and start afresh, giving her another chance. Another thing is that I would be expecting the same treatment from her if I were the one (involved in such) too. So, such important factors as love, reciprocity, children, etc. would certainly affect the decision. Many factors would come to play; she has to be remorseful and then we build the trust between us again. In the same vein, both of us have to sit down and talk about the challenges facing us. I think everyone deserves a second chance. In sum, I would forgive her like nothing happened.
I would find it difficult to trust him again

Olohunshayo Akinyele

As a couple, the first thing in a relationship is trust. It is not ideal for my husband to engage in an extramarital affair because there is a commitment between us and that should be respected. For me to lose trust in him based on his extramarital affair is expected and for the trust to be regained would be difficult. Even if I claim to have forgiven him based on the love we share, the trust is wavering and is already on a thin rope. It is not impossible (for him to regain my trust) but it is not easy. As long as there is a commitment, there shouldn’t be any reason to engage in extramarital affairs.

Our relationship can’t remain the same

Eyitope Afolabi

No, my spouse can’t regain my trust. Trust is very important in any relationship and I don’t trust easily. So, trusting my spouse is something I have built over the years. I expect that it should be cherished and respected. As humans, we tend to falter sometimes so I would have given room for my wife’s shortcomings, except adultery. But the moment you do it (adultery) to my face and it’s confirmed, then you don’t expect me to trust you again because that trust has been betrayed and taken for granted. I hate to be taken for granted or played for a fool. It doesn’t mean I won’t forgive my spouse or love again, it just means the relationship can’t be the way it used to be because an integral part of the relationship has been violated.

PoliticsMiddle Belt, Southern Leaders Give FG 90 Days To Repeal 1999 Constitution by Le124(op): 3:52pm On Dec 19, 2020
Olufemi Olaniyi, Ibadan

Prominent leaders from various ethnic groups from the South-West, South-East, South-South and the Middle Belt have described the 1999 Constitution as a fraud put together to perpetually subjugate other nationalities under the control of the Fulani.

The aggrieved leaders gave the Federal Government a 90-day ultimatum to constitute a committee on Sovereign National Conference to decide on the repeal of the 1999 Constitution or to dissolve Nigeria’s amalgamation of 1914.

According to a statement on Friday, the Middle Belt and southern leaders made the resolution at a meeting in Lagos.

The leaders, who spoke on the platform of the Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination, said the 1999 Constitution was responsible for the worsening insecurity and poverty in the land.

Some of the leaders who signed the communiqué are former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang; Prof. Yusufu Turaki; a prominent historian, Prof. Banji Akintoye; President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo; Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe; Senator Aniete Okon; and Fred Agbeyegbe.

Others include Air Commodore Indongesit Nkanga (retd.); Ambassador Godknows Igali; Fred Agbeyegbe, Rear Admiral Geoffrey Yange and Dr Kunle Oshodi.

The leaders said all elections must be suspended so that winners would not be sworn in with the same 1999 Constitution which they described as faulty.

The communiqué read partly, “Being confronted by the clear and present danger of extermination in the hands of our supposed compatriots in the union of Nigeria, (we) hereby declare a sovereignty dispute with the federation of Nigeria as represented by the Federal Government of Nigeria, on account of our repudiation and rejection of the imposed 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, whose authorship was fraudulently imputed to us.

“Furthermore, effective from today, 18th December, 2020, (we) give a 90-day notice to the Government of the Federation of Nigeria, the Security Council of the United Nations, the Government of the United States of America, the European Union as well as the international community, of the intention of the peoples of the alliance territories to reconsider our continued allegiance to the disputed 1999 Constitution as well as the unitary union of death, attrition and backwardness it foists on us.

“It is our demand that in the 90-day period of this notice, the following specific actions must be taken by the Federal Government of Nigeria to firmly set in motion an irreversible process by which the aforementioned grave constitutional grievances would be addressed:

“A formal announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria acknowledging the constitutional grievances and sovereignty dispute now declared by the peoples of the South and Middle-Belt of Nigeria.

“A formal commitment by the Federal Government of Nigeria to the wholesale decommissioning and jettisoning of the 1999 Constitution.

“A formal announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria suspending further general elections under the disputed 1999 Constitution.

“A formal initiation of a time-bound transitioning process to engender the emergence of fresh constitutional protocols by a two-stage process in which the constituent regional blocs will, at the first stage, distill and ratify their various constitutions by referendums and plebiscite and in the second stage, negotiate the terms of federating afresh as may be dictated by the outcomes of a referendum and plebiscite.”

PoliticsPresident Buhari Meets Kankara Schoolboys by Le124(op): 5:06pm On Dec 18, 2020
Sodiq Oyeleke
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is presently meeting with the students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, in Katsina State.

The PUNCH had reported that hundreds of the schoolboys were kidnapped by suspected bandits on Friday, December 11.

They were released on Thursday, December 17 in Zamfara State and taken to Katsina State on Friday morning amidst tight security.

The Personal Assistant on New Media to the President, Bashir Ahmad, had tweeted that Buhari would be meeting with the students.

Buhari had initially refused to visit the school where the students were kidnapped despite public outcry.

But the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, at a press conference on Friday, said although the President did not visit Kankara, Katsina State where students were abducted, he coordinated rescue efforts from his hometown,

When asked why the President failed to visit Kankara despite that he was in the state as of the time of the abduction, the minister said, “Yes, the president did not visit the town but he was busy coordinating the entire operation to ensure the safe return of the students within the fastest time possible.”

PoliticsBuhari Not Stingy, Gave Me Envelope With Foreign Currency -adesina by Le124(op): 2:11pm On Dec 17, 2020
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says contrary to widespread belief, the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is not a stingy man.

Adesina said Buhari on one occasion handed him an envelope filled with foreign currency and also sponsored his family on a trip to the South-East when he was given a title.

The President’s spokesman said this in a birthday tribute in honour of his principal titled, ‘Buhari at 78: If Only We Knew the President’, on Thursday.

He wrote, “And in January 2017, I was to receive the traditional title of Nwanne di Namba of Mmaku Kingdom, in Enugu State. Courtesy demanded I tell the President. This man, who prides himself as ‘very stingy’ gave me a handsome amount of money to ferry my friends and family to the ceremony. How much? I won’t tell you, lest you ask for a belated share.

“And in May 2018, I was billed for China for a 12-day course for senior government officials from Africa. He said when the journey was two days away, I should come to see him. I did. You know what he said? ‘Adesina, I know that you don’t have money. But you are too shy to ask.’ We both laughed, and he gave me an envelope which contained foreign currency. How much? You think I’ll tell you? For where?”

Adesina dismissed reports that one Jubril from Sudan was impersonating Buhari while the real President was dead.

He said Buhari’s memory was still very good as he remembered several events that occurred during the Nigerian civil war in the 1960s.

The President’s spokesman said his principal believed in rewarding good deeds hence his decision to reward the late Justice Sylvester Nsofor and Justice George Oguntade with ambassadorial appointments.

“Ask me for a loyal man, who never forgets a good turn, and I’ll show you Muhammadu Buhari. Among the last class of Ambassadors, he had personally picked Justice George Oguntade, who was sent to United Kingdom, and Justice Sylvester Nsofor, who he deployed to America. The latter died only last week, aged 85.

“How did the two men gain the favour, loyalty and respect of the President? In his many legal battles after disputed election results in 2003, and 2007, they had given dissenting judgements at both the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, nullifying the election results, saying Candidate Buhari had been cheated. The man never forgot, and sought them out in due time. The same also happened to some of us working with him today”, Adesina said.

By Abayomi Adeshida, Abuja.

Former Nigerian senator, Dino Melaye, who represented Kogi west senatorial district at the red chamber, has on Tuesday tendered a public apology to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan at a book launch in Abuja over his role in the 2015 general election that resulted in the loss of the Presidency by the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party. PoliticsArmed Thugs Invade CNG Security Summit In Kaduna, Attack Officials, Guests by Le124(op): 5:23pm On Dec 14, 2020
Godwin Isenyo, Kaduna

Officials, members of the Coalition of Northern Group, security experts as well as other participants on Monday, narrowly escaped death as thugs invaded the venue of the security summit in Kaduna State.

The security summit organized by the CNG was starting at the Arewa House Auditorium, Kaduna the state capital when the armed thugs in their hundreds invaded the place.

The Summit aimed to discuss ways to achieve synergy between communities and government security and design a uniform approach to the current security situation in the North.

Participants at the meeting included retired military officers, retired police officers, religious leaders, traditional rulers, various women, youth, and trade associations.

The meeting was coming on the heels of the abduction of students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State and other communities in the north.

It was gathered that as the meeting kicked off, the thugs armed with dangerous weapons stormed the auditorium and unleashed terror on participants and guests at the meeting.

Scores of people who gathered at the venue immediately took to their heels, some jumping through the windows.

Reacting to the development, the CNG’s Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement condemned the action of the armed thugs.

In a statement titled ‘How sponsored thugs invaded CNG meeting,’ the CNG spokesperson wondered how armed thugs would freely move in the state capital without the intervention of security operatives.
He said, “We regret to announce that armed thugs numbering hundreds were unleashed on the Arewa House venue of the security summit hosted by the Coalition of Northern Groups on Monday, December 14.
Just as the meeting was kicking off, sponsored armed thugs stormed the auditorium after subduing the civil guards at the gate.

“They overturned tables shattered glasses, attacked the guests and officials, wounding several people and smashing vehicles parked in the premises.

“It is disturbing that a battalion of armed thugs can stroll free across the streets of central Kaduna wielding dangerous weapons without the intervention of the security. Security only arrived hours after the thugs had left.

“It is quite obvious now that some powerful forces are benefiting from the current security situation and would do everything for it to continue.
“We are now all the more committed to ensuring the safety and security of the North and its people.”

PoliticsKatsina Abduction: Buhari Fails To Visit School by Le124(op): 9:28am On Dec 14, 2020
It’s shocking Buhari is in Katsina and can’t visit Kankara – Nigerians
Parents protest, PDP alleges tear gas attack on protesters, flays FG
Our focus is to resolve students’ abduction, not politics, says Presidency

Our Correspondents

Prominent groups and Nigerians from different walks of life, on Sunday, took a swipe at the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over Friday’s abduction of students of the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

Most of those who reacted said Buhari had failed and said they were shocked that the President had not visited the school despite the fact that he is in Katsina State on a weeklong vacation.

Those, who commented on the abduction of the students and Buhari’s inaction, included the Coalition of Northern Groups; the Middle Belt Forum; the Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin; the Pan Niger Delta Forum; and the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Also, on Sunday, several Nigerians took to the social media to lambast the President for failing to visit the school.

However, the Presidency, through the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said its focus was how to quickly resolve the issue thrown up by the abduction of the students, and not politics.

Shehu said this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, who sought to know from him when Buhari was planning to visit the school.

In responding, the presidential aide said, “As I speak to you, the Minister of Defence and the nation’s service chiefs just left the place.”

When told that Nigerians were already faulting the President for sending a delegation, while he is currently in the state, Shehu said, “Our focus is about resolving the issue. Leave us out of politics.”

Buhari criticised for failing to visit school

Several Nigerians took to the social media to criticise the President for failing to visit the school and wondered why he would ask the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, to travel to Katsina State from Abuja, when he (Buhari) was currently in the same state on vacation.

One @SodiqTade tweeted, “My problem right now is Buhari sending delegates to Katsina from Abuja while he is currently in the same state. It takes minutes to get to the school but no let’s waste resources.

“Those who asked Goodluck Jonathan to travel miles from Kano down to the incident site in Borno on same day are now making ‘long distance’ excuse for Buhari. Even though the incident site is Katsina and Buhari is in the same Katsina. They said 150 minutes road journey is much for him.”

@EhiOziegbe tweeted, “Buhari should resign if he is not well. How can he be in Katsina and a delegation is going there? There is something that is not adding up with all the nonsense happening in the North.”

Similarly, one @Boufdadi tweeted, “Where is Buhari? Why isn’t he showing his face? Why can’t he go and commiserate with the parents of the abducted children? There are things we are not being told. Time will tell us these things.”

Another tweep, @maojawo, described the visit by the delegation as a waste of public resources.

“Wastage seems to be the only thing this government know how to do. Buhari in Katsina cannot pay condolence to the people, he sent people from Abuja to do it for him. The time, energy, and resources for it are wasted,” he tweeted.

“Is the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria not in Katsina State? Only God knows how much fund will go down into this visit,” @aladeniyi_ asked.

In his contribution, @DanielBalogun wondered why Buhari could not cut short his vacation to visit the school and commiserate with families of the victims.
This does not add up. Ordinarily, the sitting President will cut short his private visit to attend to issue in his state. He should be seen with Masari to find the 333/600 students remaining. Another lesser delegation? Really? Is Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo also incapacitated?” he tweeted.

Be a man of honour, resign, M’Belt Forum tells Buhari

The Middle Belt Forum, on Sunday, asked the President to resign from his position having failed to tackle the security challenges facing the country.

Speaking with one of our correspondents in Jos, the National President of the Middle Belt Forum, Dr Bitrus Porgu, lamented the incident and wondered why Buhari, who promised to bring insurgency to an end within three months of assuming office, would continue to remain in power for more than six years without solving the problem.

Porgu said, “As far as we are concerned, in a civilised society, he would have resigned as an honourable person, because he has not been able to fulfil his promise to Nigerians.

“Unfortunately, in our clime, that has not happened, because people are not people of honour. The abduction in Kastina is just one too many. Those who abducted the young students will go and initiate them forcefully into terrorism and this is an unfortunate development.

“As the students were abducted, just yesterday (Saturday), a village south of Chibok in Borno State was attacked by terrorists, and from the information I gathered, two soldiers were killed along with one civilian, while the soldiers were able to bring down two of the insurgents.”

On his part, Odumakin said the nation had become virtually ungoverned under the President.

“The position of the President has become untenable and it is a wasteful venture calling for his resignation. The country under him is virtually ungoverned and practically ungovernable,” he stated.

While sympathising with the families of the abducted students, PANDEF described the action as condemnable and unacceptable, especially as it happened in the President’s home state.

It, however, said calls for the resignation of Buhari over the prevailing insecurity in the country was misplaced.

The spokesman for PANDEF, Ken Robinson, who stated this in a chat with one of our correspondents, said there were constitutional provisions to fall back on if the President was failing in his responsibilities.

He stated, “The fact remains that this administration of Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigerians and has failed to secure and protect the lives and property of Nigerians across the country.”

On its part, Ohanaeze Ndigbo said calling for the resignation of the President because of the pervading insecurity in the country would not solve the problem.

Ohanaeze’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke to one of our correspondents, asked: “If he resigns, who solves the problem?

“You can consider that in a sane clime, but we have not yet built sanity in our polity. Those that may be genuinely asking him to resign will become attack dogs if you tell them. Our real solution is restructuring our polity.”

Self-defence only option left for northerners – CNG

But the Coalition of Northern Group said the call for the resignation of the President, would not be out of place.

According to the CNG, the only option left for northerners in the current face of insecurity, is self defence.

The CNG’s Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman told one of our correspondents in Kaduna on Sunday that the organisation was pained by the renewed onslaught of attacks on Northerners by bandits.

PoliticsKogi Council Poll: APC Wins All 21 LGAs, 239 Wards; Opposition Parties Kick by Le124(op): 6:58pm On Dec 13, 2020
By Boluwaji Obahopo – Lokoja

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission, KOSIEC, has declared the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner in all the 21 local government council elections conducted on Saturday.

By Clever Advertising The state electoral body also declared the APC winner of all the 239 wards. The election was contested by other political parties in the state as voters turned out to vote for their respective candidates. Although there was low turnout in some places, but it was peaceful throughout the state as no single crisis was recorded during the election. KOSIEC chairman, Mamman Nda Eri while announcing the result on Sunday said the All Progressive Congress (APC) won the chairmanship position of all the 21 LGA and all the councillor seats of the 239 wards in the state.

He said that the local government councils polls were free, fair and credible. However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kogi state chapter has faulted the council polls across the 21 Local Government Election of the State describing it as a big mockery to the nations nascent democracy. The State Publicity Secretary of the Party, Mr Bode Ogunmola in a statement on Saturday, described the entire process as a scam.

He said the State Government should have opened up to the entire Kogite that they were not ready to conduct any council election rather than wasting the precious time of electorates who are willing to express their anger through the ballot on the maladministration of the present All Progressive Congress, (APC), in the last five years. Ogunmola noted that the feelers he is getting across the state polling booths showed that there was no election conducted anywhere in the State. The Party spokesperson alleged that some thugs loyal to the ruling party, invaded the headquarter of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission, (KOSIEC), on Friday night, to snatch ballot boxes into an unknown destination. He said the ruling party would have tasted a sweeping defeat if they were willing to conduct a credible, free and fair election, as their five years in power has been greeted with poverty, unemployment, hunger and a shrinking economy.

His words, “There is no election anywhere in Kogi State. I am at 002 Open space voting unit in Ogori, This is 9.30 am and there is no sign of any voting anywhere. Reports reaching me from across the state is the same. This is a big disgrace to our state again under the APC led government”. Also, the state chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Muktar Atimah has condemned the outcome of the election. Speaking with newsmen on Sunday, Atimah pointed out that having received assurances from the SIEC Chairman of conducting a credible polls, the council election lacked the minimum standard, was an aberration to known democracy. The SDP called on the President to ensure that holistic reforms on the conduct of the election are carried out before he lives Office, “Else it will be safe to say democracy in the country has been murdered.

“We called on the members of our party to observe a month of mourning as a way of registering our displeasure to the conduct of the concluded Kogi State Council election. The elected chairmen are expected to be sworn in on Monday at government house Lokoja.

PoliticsPDP Reps Demand Impeachment Of Buhari by Le124(op): 4:53pm On Dec 06, 2020
…Want FEC to declare President Incapacitated

By Tordue Salem, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on members of the Green Chamber, to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari. They opine, he is incapable of continuing as the leader of the country. Besides, the section of PDP lawmakers in the Green Chamber, urged members of his cabinet to declare him incapacitated, invoking section 144 of the 1999 constitution.

By Clever Advertising The caucus “wants Nigerians to compel their representatives in the National Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari for gross incompetence and persistent and continuous breach of Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution. The Section provides ” the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government; …” “The PDP caucus also wants members of the Federal Executive Council to invoke the provisions of Section 144 (1) of the Constitution by declaring that the President is incapable of discharging the functions of the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “The Section provides ” The President or Vice-President shall cease to hold office, if- by a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of all the members of the executive council of the Federation, it is declared that the President or Vice-President is incapable of discharging the functions of his office”. Leader of the caucus, Rep. Kingsley Chinda (PDP-Rivers) in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, said “it was disheartening to the PDP Caucus that the President has failed to lead Nigerians from the front as he promised. Nigerians are daily and defencelessly killed by terrorists and bandits, while the economy is being freely bleed by public officers”. He was reacting to the recent killing of farmers in Zambarmari area of Borno state, adding that the reactions of the presidency and the military to such killings “highlight a certain crassness and lame duck attitude that has for the past five years come to define the Buhari presidency”. He said “ the body language of the government is worrisome as it emboldens terrorists in the country, the greater worries for the country however, is “the do-nothing posturing and the effeminate reactions of the presidency and the military that follow the dastardly attacks.” According to him, “the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the House of Representatives have observed with deep pain the dastardly attacks on poor farmers which have continued unabated across the vast swathes of northern Nigeria, which act came to a sad climax over the weekend in Zabarmari, near Maiduguri, north east Nigeria.

“The attacks continue to take a consistent pattern – a pattern that results in mass deaths and emboldens the insurgents to embark on more spectacular attacks that provide them national and global attention. While the emboldening of terrorists remain sources of worry, the greater worries for us is the do-nothing posturing and the effeminate reactions of the presidency and the military that follow the dastardly attacks”. Chinda said “The reactions of the presidency and the military highlight a certain crassness and lame duck attitude that has for the past five years come to define the Buhari presidency.” He lamented that “Northern Nigeria has long become the vortex of massacres. From Buni Yadi, Gamboru, Baga, Gwoza, Shiroro, Konduga, Kawuri, Southern Kaduna to Benue and certainly everywhere else in Nigeria, lives are being snatched by insurgents, bandits and kidnappers who have no respect for the sanctity of life.

While President Buhari idles in the typical fashion of Emperor Nero as our country burns. Questions must be asked about his capacity to lead at a time that our country desires robust and responsible leadership that can pull it from the brink and rescue it from the debilitions of insurgents, terrorists, bandits and kidnappers.” Chinda observed that “President Buhari is unwilling, (as it consistently appears,) to provide leadership to our fast collapsing country. Rather than take the proverbial bull by the horn, President Buhari ensconces himself in Aso Rock, typical of a Mourner-in-Chief, and issues press statements that make no meaning to a grieving nation”. He reminded the President that “a true leader who is worth every ounce of respect leads from the front as you assured Nigerians that you will do; a true leader doesn’t hide away from those he leads and pretends to mourn with the circus, whilst in fact, he lacks empathy and compassion.” “When a country elects a clown as its President based on sentiments and deceit, the country becomes saddled with circus, pantomime jesters who reduce statecraft to utter joke.” “Our country is in the grips of the clowns, hyenas and the circus is on.

We need to rescue Nigeria from the clowns, acrobats, trapeze actors, hawks and hyenas manipulating the statecraft. ” He added that, “As Vice-president Yemi Osibanjo SAN tweeted ‘if the President says I’ve lost the capacity to guarantee the security of lives and property, it’s certainly an impeachable offence. “Most painful is that whilst leadership is completely absent in Nigeria and the country dovetailing to a state of survival of the fittest, the economy is being fleeced in an unprecedented manner by public office holders.” He recalled “the warning by Albert Einstien that ‘the world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything”, as he called on “Nigerians across tribe, religion and political party to wake up their National Assembly Members, and compel them to commence impeachment process against President Buhari to save Nigeria Rep Chinda advised”.

Foreign AffairsBreaking: U.S. House Passes Historic Bill To Legalise Marijuana by Le124(op): 10:24pm On Dec 04, 2020
The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday passed a bill that seeks to decriminalise the use of marijuana at the federal level. Initiated by Democrats, the Marijuana Opportunity, Re-investment and Expungement Act contains provisions for “re-assessment of prior marijuana-related convictions”. It also seeks investments in services for people caught up in the country’s war on drugs, and opening up of funding by the Small Business Administration for legitimate cannabis-related businesses. The historic bill sailed through with 228-164 votes, with just five Republicans voting in favor and six Democrats against. Supporters described the proposal, which has a slim chance of approval by the Republican-controlled Senate, as a rejection of the country’s war on drugs. Medical cannabis is legal in 36 states and the District of Columbia (DC), while 15 states and DC have legalised the substance for adult recreational use. During debate on the bill, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Mr Jerry Nadler, a Democrat, said the legislation would reverse “the failed policy of criminalising marijuana at the federal level”. Nadler stated that it would also address the heavy toll “this policy has taken across the country, particularly on communities of color”. He said: “For far too long, we have treated marijuana as a criminal justice problem instead of as a matter of personal choice and public health.

“Whatever one’s views are on the use of marijuana for recreational or medicinal use, the policy of arrests, prosecution, and incarceration at the Federal level has proven unwise and unjust. “I have long believed that the criminalization of marijuana has been a mistake, and the racially disparate enforcement of marijuana laws has only compounded this mistake, with serious consequences, particularly for communities of color.”
But many Republicans, including Greg Murphy (North Carolina), opposed the bill on the ground that marijuana was responsible for increased traffic deaths and as a “gateway drug”. “Marijuana is one of the most abused substances on this planet. Legalising weed would create revenue from taxes, but at what cost? “Do we then start legalising cocaine? Marijuana is a gateway drug, make no mistake about that. It undoubtably leads to further and much more dangerous drug use,” he said. Analysts say the passage of the bill by the House could influence President-elect Joe Biden’s policies on cannabis after he assumes duty in January. While serving as a senator, Biden was tough on crimes, but soft pedaled in the run up to the Nov. 3 election. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is a strong supporter of marijuana legalisation in the Senate, and urged her colleagues to act to remove the “burden of marijuana convictions”. NAN

PoliticsAppeal Court Sacks Ararume, Reinstates Ibezim by Le124(op): 6:56pm On Dec 04, 2020
By Chidi Nkwopara, Owerri

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Owerri, sacked Senator Ifeanyi Araraume and declared Sir Frank Ibezim as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the rescheduled Imo North senatorial bye-election. The judgment, which was delivered less than 24 hours to the bye-election, was read by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam.

The Court of Appeal roundly faulted the November 6, 2020, judgment that sacked Ibezim and announced Araraume as the candidate of APC, having won the party primary election.

It was the considered opinion of the Judge that the revalidation of Ibezim’s candidacy, was in tandem with the Electoral Act, having won the APC party primary, way back in September 2020. Justice Onyemenam ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately enlist Sir Ibezim’s name, as the APC candidate for the bye-election. It would be recalled that the bye-election is expected to hold today, in the 64 wards across the six Local Government Areas that make up the senatorial zone. They include, Okigwe, Obowo, Ihitte-Uboma, Isiala-Mbano, Ehime Mbano and Onuimo local government councils.

…Invitation, not necessary-Gbajabiamila, Doguwa

…thunderous shouts of No, No-Borno Lawmakers

…as House abruptly goes into executive session

By Levinus Nwabughiogu

Members of the House of Representatives were divided at Tuesday plenary on whether or not to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to appear before them and offer explanation on the true security situation of the country. An earlier circulated motion had prayed for the invitation of the president.

But the motion eventually moved by Hon. Satomi Ahmed on behalf other 10 Borno State lawmakers on the floor prayed the president to amongst other things, declare a State of emergency on security matters. But the motion as presented didn’t sit down well with another Borno lawmaker, Hon. Ahamdu Jaha who relied on Order 6, Rule 1 of the House to say that the original motion to which all the lawmakers agreed on was to call on the President to address them on the security situation especially in the north east region. He, therefore, amended the prayers of the motion. “My amendment is that Mr. President should be invited to come and explain the security situation in the country especially in the northeast”, he said. His amendment got the support of the House.

But the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila said it was not necessary, stressing that the State of emergency prayer sufficed This was however rejected by the House. Similarly, the majority leader of the House, Ado Doguwa added his voice, saying that security issues can’t be discussed openly, pleading for the understanding of his colleagues not to summon the president. His contribution was however greeted with a thunderous shout of No. Seeing the rising tension and the determination of the lawmakers, the Speaker suddenly called for executive session to resolve the matter. “Hon. Colleagues, I am a little bit disappointed with a lot of these no, no. “This is not the spirit with which we started this 9th assembly. “We will go into executive session to resolve this matter”, Gbajabiamila said The House is yet to reconvene at the time of filing this report.

PoliticsBorno Killings: Nigeria At Mercy Of Terrorists, We’re Being Denied Weapons — Lai by Le124(op): 2:07pm On Nov 30, 2020
By Peter Duruw

The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Monday said Nigeria is currently at the mercy of terrorists because the country is being denied access to acquire needed weapons to fight the insurgents despite efforts to do so. The Minister who lamented the killings of 43 farmers in Zabarmari, Jere Local Government Area of Borno State said the federal government would not relent in its efforts to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.

Alhaji Mohammed who spoke in Makurdi when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Samuel Ortom said terrorists were enjoying global funding and would require an equally global collaboration to defeat. He said, “when people talk about terrorism, they don’t seem to appreciate the fact that terrorism is not a local issue but a global issue and there is no part of the world that is not experiencing pockets of terrorism. “I am glad that the Governor Ortom himself has said the federal government has assisted a lot in curbing the issue of insecurity in Benue State. “We will never stop protecting lives and livelihood of the people, but you must understand that we are also dealing with terrorists who are financed globally and we also need more support from global partners. “For instance, Nigeria has made attempts to acquire better and more effective platforms to deal with terrorists and for one reason or the other we have been denied these platforms, and without these weapons and adequate platforms, we will remain at the mercy of terrorists.

“But you see, fighting terrorists is not a joke because what actually happened in Borno State was quite unfortunate. “You must be also able to look at the strategy of the terrorists. You see, terrorists also use media and publicity as oxygen. So when they go on this kind of mindless killings of innocent people, it is just that a dying terrorist group will now suddenly again spring to life. “It does not mean that the government is not doing enough. Terrorism in Africa and any other place in the world has the same concept which is, you have a group of people who are extremists in their thoughts, who don’t believe that me and you should be alive.” Earlier, Governor Samuel Ortom had commended the efforts of the federal government to curb insecurity in the state. He said, “this is the reason Benue is relatively calm and the issue of herdsmen attacks have been reduced to the barest minimum.” The Governor warned that the state would not hesitate to apprehend and prosecute any herdsman caught violating the law prohibiting open grazing in the state. He appealed to the federal government to urgently release the N10billion promised victims of herdsmen attacks to enable Benue rebuild homes of farmers sacked from their ancestral homes.

PoliticsBiafra Existed 500 Yrs Before Nigeria Was Created — Emekesiri, Original Founder by Le124(op): 11:56am On Nov 07, 2020
*Describes Kanu as ‘worst evil I’ve met on earth’

*’IPOB ostracised him before he registered his own in UK, hijacked, adopted our name

*FG pproscribed Kanu’s IPOB which can be sued, but we’re remnants of land of Biafra and cannot be proscribed *Original IPOB in court for devolution of powers

*Like Britain, we can have Biafra, Arewa, Oduduwa etc in Nigeria

Barrister Emeka Emekesiri is the presumed founder of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. He is the spokesman and counsel of the Supreme Council of Elders of IPOB, which formed the customary government of IPOB. He speaks on the original philosophy of IPOB and Nnamdi Kanu’s incursion. He also explains why Igbo presidency is not a solution to Biafra agitation and the Biafra case against Nigeria still pending in the court of appeal.

By Dennis Agbo What is the customary government of IPOB all about? You know that as it is now, Biafra does not exist as a sovereign nation but the human beings called Biafrans are still in existence and when the Republic of Biafra ceased to exist, what ceased was the republic and the status made by the government of Biafra, the laws made by the republic of Biafra ceased to exist. The Human beings remained as well as the customs and tradition of the people. These native laws, customs and traditions of the people remained and were adopted by the Nigeria government under section 315 of the constitution as the existing laws. That is why the customary law and the Sharia law are recognized by the Nigeria constitution as existing laws in force before Nigeria was created. So on the fall of the Biafran republic, all the laws made by the Biafran parliament ceased to exist but the customary laws of the people remained intact, valid and adopted by the Nigerian constitution as existing laws. That is why today in Nigeria customary laws are given their proper position as part of Nigerian law and that’s why we have customary courts and customary courts of Appeal just like Sharia law. Is it not spurious to claim there were people called Biafra earlier than Ojukwu’s declaration in 1967? Biafra had existed about 500 years before Nigeria was created. It wasn’t actually a new country that was declared by the 1967 proclamation of Biafra but it was like a restoration of the old Biafra. There was no Nigeria abinitio. We had three regions from where Nigeria was carved out in the 16th century. We had the Zamfara region in the north, the Biafra region in the east and the Benin kingdom in the west. From these three regions in the ancient map of Africa, up to 1885 when there was the scramble for Africa in Berlin, where they shared the map for Africa, that Map continued to be in existence until 1885. It is from these three regions that the country, Nigeria, was created. When the country was created, they left some part of Zamfara region into the present-day Niger and Chad; they left some of the present day Biafra people in Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and left some parts of Benin people in Dahomey which is now called Benin Republic and some other parts. So they took a few and put us in a new country called Nigeria. They distorted the map of Africa and created a new country called Nigeria, merging the incompatible tribes together. So when the Eastern Nigeria wanted a republic of their own, it was Chief Frank Opigo from the present day Bayelsa state that suggested they should use the ancient name of their ancestors, Biafra, and that’s how it was adopted. It wasn’t even Ojukwu that suggested the name but Opigo. Remember that before then there were the Bite of Biafra and Bite of Benin which they changed in the Nigeria map in 1975. After the Biafra war, the bites of Biafra and Benin continued to feature in Nigeria map. Bite is like a bay beach, the river mouth, the ocean mouth of Biafra. So there was a nation called Biafra that had that ocean mouth. In 1975 the Nigerian government made a law called the bite of Bonny act to replace the bite of Biafra. So our history shows there was Biafra before the Ojukwu declaration of Biafra. If such is the case, why is the present day Biafra limited to the Ibo tribe alone? That is because when the war was fought, the enemy sowed a seed of discord among Biafrans that some Biafrans decided to deny their identity, especially the Biafrans of the South-south and other areas that decided so. It was a mechanism for self-preservation. In other words, when the enemy catches on you, you will say I am not a Biafran to save your life. Such is usual in a war situation; people out of fear decide to deny their identity. It’s there in the Bible, when Peter denied Jesus Christ to stay alive but he repented. So I am now expecting those who denied Biafra to stay alive to now come back and accept we are Biafrans. We lost our sovereignty but our identity is not lost which is what I have argued in court face to face with Nigeria lawyers. What we lost was our ability to govern ourselves but we are still the remnants of the Biafra that were not consumed. How come everything about IPOB is now centred on Nnamdi Kanu? I don’t know how to describe Nnamdi Kanu but without apologies I have come to say that Nnamdi Kanu is the worst evil I have met on earth. Tell him I said this. I pray God to give me the ability to forgive that boy. He destroyed everything we built. He came from MASSOB and joined us in IPOB; I didn’t know who he was. It was just unfortunate. I created that name Indigenous People of Biafra and I wrote it in my Book, Biafra or Nigeria Presidency, What Do Igbos Want? and gave reason I called it IPOB. While I was writing the Book from 2007 to 2011, the United Nations passed a law called UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People in 2007. So I instituted a case at the Owerri Federal High Court in 2012 and served notice on Nigeria government that we are Indigenous people of Biafra since we were not all consumed by the war. What were your prayers in the suit? The prayer was for self-determination because we took the law. Fortunately, the Nigeria government enacted the right of people to self-determination. The Nigeria law cap10 of the federation 1990, Articles 19-25 enacted the rights of indigenous People to self-determination. So I picked it by originating summons, let the Attorney General of the Federation come to court to interpret this law, whether by such provision indigenous people have right to self-determination and if so, we ask for it. There were many prayers including the prayer Ohanaeze Ndigbo brought before the National Assembly dated June 28, 2012, where Ohanaeze Ndigbo brought a memorandum to the National Assembly to create six autonomous self-governing regions in Nigeria.

PoliticsBear With Us, If We Have Not Done Enough – Buhari Appeals To Nigerians by Le124(op): 6:16pm On Nov 06, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday appealed to Nigerians yet to feel the impacts of his Administration and those who feel the government is not doing enough to bear with the government. The President made the appeal in Ilorin at a town hall meeting with the traditional rulers, youths, students, organised labour, market women and other stakeholders on the #EndSARS protest and its aftermath.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN recalled the President had directed all his cabinet ministers to go to their respective states and interact with the people over the protest and what the government had done. The Kwara state meeting hosted in Ilorin by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed was attended by the state Governor Abdulrazaq Abdulrahman. Speaker of the state House of Assembly Hon. Yakubu Danladi, Emir of Ilorin, HRH Sulu Gambari and other traditional rulers, representatives of market women, traders and other stakeholders attended the event. In the President message delivered by the minister, he said the Administration has the interest of the youths and the people in general at heart and has been doing a lot to touch their lives. The president said the government is constraint by the dwindling resources occasioned by the impact of COVID 19 which also affected the global economy. “If we have not done enough or we have not touch everybody, we appeal that you please bear with us.

“In the first instance, what we have is less than 60 per cent of the revenue that was available to other governments that came before us. “We all know what we suffered during COVID 19, and as we are just trying to recover from this we also face another crisis. “We appeal that you should please assist the government and be patient. “This government is dedicated to serving the people and we will continue to try our best to do so “I thank you all for your perseverance, understanding and patience’, he said The president said the administration has many initiatives targeted at creating jobs for the youths and alleviating poverty among women and vulnerable groups. He said the government initiated N75 billion National Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) aimed at providing opportunities for the youths. He said the Fund is part of the N2.3 trillion Economic Sustainability Plan to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on most vulnerable Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country. He also listed MSMEs Survival Fund as part of the administration’s initiative at jobs sustainability. He said the Fund is a cluster of grants to support MSMEs to meet their payroll obligations and safeguard MSMEs jobs from the shock of COVID-19 pandemic. The President said other initiatives targeted at the youths included N-POWER which had engaged 500,000 beneficiaries with 400,000 more in December. He said 10,000 youths had been trained and benefitted under N-TECH and N-AGRO respectively. The president said the federal government FINTECH created enabling environment for growth of businesses that use technology to enhance or automate financial services and processes. He said over two million farmers, traders, mostly youths were empowered under FARMERMONI, TRADERMONI and MARKETMONI. The president said over 500,000 youths have also benefited from the Graduate Internship Scheme which provides short-term employment graduates. He said 1000 farmers from each of the 774 LGAs in the country were empowered and guided under the Youth Entrepreneurship Support programme. Earlier, Gov. Abdulrazaq thanked the President for the initiative of directing ministers to interact with the people at the state level. The governor prayed for peace unity and stability of the country. In his contribution, the Emir of Ilorin said the town hall meeting is a good forum for the people to expressed their minds and grievances to government. The Emir said he was concerned about the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) affecting the children of the poor who could not send their children abroad and to private universities to study. The traditional ruler also charged the leader to address the challenges of bad roads corruption and decay infrastructure accross the country. The Chairman of ASUU in University of Ilorin, Prof. Moyosore Ajao said the #EndSARS was successful largely because many frustrated University students who had stayed at home for over right months joined in the protest. He called on government to settle the lingering crisis for students to return to schools. Mrs Raliat Yusuf who spoke on behalf of women urged the government to open all borders for food items to come in and to address the problem of hunger in the country. Some other stakeholders who spoke at the event complaines that many of the laudable programmes of the federal government did not get to the grassroot. The host assured that the Federal government would address all the issues raised by the stakeholders. (NAN)

Counsel to the Lagos State government, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), on Friday, told the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the Lekki Tollgate shootings that #EndSARS protesters were a body not recognised by law. Owonikoko made the submission after Mr Adesina Ogunlana announced his appearance to the panel as the counsel representing the EndSARS protesters.

Ogunlana had informed the panel that he would be cross-examining Mr Abayomi Omomuwasan, the Managing Director of Lekki Concession Company (LCC).

Omomuwasan was appearing before the panel to testify on the Oct. 20 shooting of #EndSARS protesters by members of the Nigerian military at the Lekki tollgate. “To the best of my knowledge, there is no body called #EndSARS protesters and we know that a lawyer must adjudicate based on instruction. “My learned friend is entitled to representing anyone recognised before the law. We must know the persons the counsel is representing. “We cannot have anyone appearing for a body without any structure.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), for instance, is a known public body with known structure,” Owonikoko said. The LCC Counsel, Mr Rotimi Seriki, also aligned himself views with Owonikoko’s submission. “He must represent a body known to law.

The witness (LCC MD) appeared before the tribunal because they have evidence that would be of interest to the panel. “We cannot allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to cross-examine the witness,” he said. Responding, Ogunlana said he was neither a Tom, Dick or Harry, adding that he received his instruction from #EndSARS protesters, some of whom were present during proceedings. “He (Seriki) is not in a position to describe my clients or leadership. It is because of #EndSARS protesters that we are here; it is because of the #EndSARS protesters that this panel was created. “My lord did counsel a few days back that this is not a regular court but a fact-finding body. I’m not representing spirits; I’m representing actual persons,” he said.

Following his submission, Ogunlana presented three #EndSARS protesters, Victoria Oniru, Dabira Ayuku and Perpetua Kamsichukwu, as his clients. Reacting, Owonikoko, however, said “these are decent people. I withdraw my objection.” The LCC counsel also withdrew his objection, following the presentation of the #EndSARS protesters before the panel.

PoliticsIt Is Better To Lose Power And Gain Honour —jonathan by Le124(op): 1:31pm On Nov 06, 2020
Kayode Oyero

Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, says it is better to lose power and gain honour.

Jonathan, who made this known in a Facebook post on Friday, recommended this ‘philosophy’ to all leaders facing ‘challenging situations at the polls’.

He wrote, “Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any citizen. It is better to gain honour at the cost of losing power than to gain power at the cost of losing honour.

“At any point in time, the power of love should matter more than the love of power.

“This is my philosophy. I have lived it. It has brought great peace to both my beloved nation and I. And I recommend it to all leaders facing challenging situations, either in government, or at the polls, or even in their dealings with fellow political actors.”

Jonathan, who sought reelection on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015, had conceded defeat to the incumbent Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), of the All Progressives Congress.

Although Jonathan was not specific about the world ‘leaders’ he made the recommendation to, his statement was made at a time when the United States is electing a new President to lead the nation for another four years.

The incumbent American President, Donald Trump, and his Democrat challenger Joe Biden are presently slugging it out at the polls but the electoral college votes are tilting in favour of Biden who is some figures shy from the magic number of 270.

The Republican candidate has, however, been alleging fraud in the voting process. Trump has also threatened that the election would end up at the US Supreme Court.

HealthCOVID-19: Lagos May Re-impose Lockdown, Other Measures —health Commissioner by Le124(op): 11:13pm On Nov 03, 2020
Sodiq Oyeleke

The Lagos State Government may impose a new lockdown and return other measures if there is a recurrence of high cases of coronavirus in the state.

This was contained in a press statement by the Director, Public Affairs of the Ministry of Health, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, on Tuesday.

The statement was titled, ‘Lagos calls for precautions against second wave of COVID-19’.

The statement quoted the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, as saying that many countries around the world have found it necessary to impose a second lockdown and restriction of movements, which have significant socio-economic and security consequences.

The commissioner, however, warned that “the continuous flagrant disregard of safety guidelines by citizens heralds’ danger and may lead to a second wave of new infections in Lagos”.

Part of the statement read, “The Lagos State Government has once again stressed the need for residents to strictly adhere to precautionary measures against COVID-19 infection transmission to prevent a recurrence of the situation that led to the lockdown of the economy.

“A resurgence of cases in Lagos may lead to the reversal of the strategically calculated measures put in place by the Government to open up the economy.

“The first wave of coronavirus started in December 2019 and swept through an unprepared world. The first case of COVID-19 in Nigeria was recorded in Lagos on the 27th of February 2020. Lagos has since become the epicentre of the outbreak in Nigeria with a record of 21,107 confirmed cases and 212 deaths from the virus till date.

“The containment measures put in place at the time included COVID-19 testing, isolation and treatment, surveillance, total shutdown of the State for about 12 weeks and partial shutdown of social, economic and academic activities for over four months.”

Abayomi advised citizens against unnecessary movement and social gatherings, “unless it is absolutely necessary stressing that travelling into and outside the Country should be discouraged except when absolutely necessary”.

He said, “The erroneous belief that COVID-19 has been conquered and is no more in Nigeria should be discarded. Based on our data, this assumption is invalid. It creates a false sense of security amongst the citizens causing many to abandon the use of face masks and other safety measures and protocols put in place by the Government.

“Though we have reached our peak as predicted and are now experiencing a decline in the number of positive cases, this is not a reason to conclude that all is over. COVID-19 is still very much with us as evidenced in the number of cases being recorded in the community daily and occasional deaths from severe complications.

“The reason for the decline in COVID-19 cases in Lagos is attributable to a number of factors, including public adherence to safety regulations of physical and social distancing, hand hygiene, use of face mask in public places, expanded testing strategy and contact tracing, among others, and this is the more reason why citizens should not relent in this regard if we don’t want to experience a second wave of the disease.”

PoliticsUS 2020 Election: Fani-kayode Prays For Trump by Le124(op): 12:46pm On Nov 03, 2020
As United States begins election today, Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Tuesday prayed for God’s intervention, asking him to make his friend President Donald Trump victorious in the ongoing election. Trump who is a Republican is contesting against, former Vice-President Joe Biden, a Democrats. Biden according to yesterday’s report was leading by a narrower margin in many key states and has multiple paths to victory. Trump’s route to the required 270 votes is thinner but still viable, meaning either candidate could win.

However, Trump’s campaign is counting on a surge in Election Day turnout from his supporters to fuel the President’s path to reelection. Biden is ahead in sufficient swing states to allow multiple routes to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, including through the Sun Belt and the Midwest. Praying for his friend, Fani-Kayode said: “Let your name be glorified today O Lord and let your son and servant President Donald J. Trump, prevail. We pray this in Jesus name. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is with you. The Holy One of Israel is your strength. He is a man of war and He is irresistible in battle. He is your shield, your glory and the lifter of your head! He will show Himself mighty today! Congratulations in advance!”.

PoliticsImmigration Prevents #endsars Promoter From Travelling by Le124(op): 12:37pm On Nov 03, 2020
Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja

The Nigeria Immigration Service on Monday prevented a promoter of the #EndSARS movement, Modupe Odele, from travelling.

Although the officers did not disclose the reason for their action, it is believed that the action was taken because of her alleged role in the #EndSARS protests.

Odele, had through her Twitter handle, @Mochievous, mobilised her 219,000 followers during the protests.

She had also offered free legal aid to persons who were unjustly arrested during the demonstrations.

Confirming the development in a newsletter sent out on Monday, the lawyer said she was on her way to the Maldives to celebrate her birthday when she was accosted by immigration officers.

She wrote, “For my birthday, I had planned a trip to the Maldives. It was really for a break as the events of the last three weeks have exhausted my mind and body in a way I have never been exhausted in my life.

“I went to the airport, passed through immigration, and while I was putting my bags through the body and baggage scanner, the immigration officer who had previously cleared me, called me back. He told me he had orders from above to detain me.

“Okay, at this point I’m like excuse me, my flight is in an hour. On what grounds are you detaining me?” He didn’t respond. Instead, he goes to his computer where he typed in my name and something that looked like a ‘wanted poster’ popped up on the portal.

“He blocked my view so I couldn’t see most of it but I saw some of it. And it read something like – ‘This person is under investigation by XYZ Intelligence Agency. If seen, they should be apprehended on sight.'”

Odele said she was detained while her passport was seized by the officers and she was made to miss her flight.

The lawyer said that she had been able to identify the security agency that put her on the watch list, adding that she would be returning there on Tuesday.

Odele wrote, “Since the #EndSARS peaceful protests started in Nigeria about three weeks ago, I and some super courageous women have been providing support to Nigerians as they came out to peacefully exercise their constitutional rights.

“I was specifically in charge of legal aid and so co-led www.endsarslegalaid.co where we succeeded in helping over 80 peaceful protesters who were arrested get released. It was back-breaking and emotionally tasking work but the joy that the family expressed when being reunited with loved ones made it all worth it.

“I’m not a full-time activist or human rights attorney. I am a corporate lawyer at the moment so dealing with police stations isn’t my area of expertise. I did what needed to be done in the face of gross injustice and had the support of over 800 wonderful volunteer lawyers.”

Odele stated that she had begun providing pro bono lawyers to victims of police brutality who wish to file petitions before the Judicial Panels set up by states across the country to investigate alleged incidences of police brutality.

When contacted, NIS Spokesman, Sunday James, said he couldn’t confirm the development yet and asked for more time.

However, #FreeMoeSexy had begun trending on Twitter by Tuesday morning with thousands calling on the authorities to stop harassing Odele.

PoliticsFG To Spend N269.38bn On Six Million Free Meters by Le124(op): 9:34am On Nov 02, 2020
Okechukwu Nnodim, Abuja

The Federal Government is to spend between N269.38bn and N497.13bn on the provision of six million free meters to various unmetered power users across the country.

Also, findings from separate quarterly reports of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on the power sector showed that the number of unmetered customers in Nigeria has reduced by 210,359.

It was also gathered that about 245,916 unmetered power consumers would not benefit from the six million free meters, as Nigeria currently has about 6,245,916.

On Thursday, a presidency source told reporters in Abuja that the government would commence its free meter distribution scheme the following day with Kano, Kaduna, Eko and Ikeja electricity distribution companies’ franchise areas.

The PUNCH reported on Friday that the presidency official, who pleaded not to be named as he was not authorised to speak on the matter, explained that the exercise would be carried out under the National Mass Metering Programme.

“The NMMP is to roll out six million meters for all connection points on grid without meters over the next 18 to 24 months, estimated to impact 30 million consumers nationwide,” the official stated.

It was also gathered that the mass metering scheme took effect after a recent directive by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Based on the directive, the CBN approved guidelines for funding the programme, which entailed that all meters under the scheme would be locally sourced in order to create more jobs.

Our correspondent gathered from the NERC that most meters used by power consumers in Nigeria come in single phases and three phases.

The power sector regulator in June approved a hike in the prices of both meters.

The commission increased the price for a three-phase meter from N67,055.85 to N82,855.19, while the cost of a single-phase meter was raised from N36,991.50 to N44,896.17.

Going by the hike in prices, findings showed that for three-phase meters, a total of N497.13bn would be required to provide the six million meters planned for free distribution nationwide.

On the other hand, for the single phase meter, a total of N269.38bn would be required to provide free six million meters.

It therefore shows that the government would need to spend a minimum of N269.38bn to freely provide the six million meters planned for nationwide distribution.

However, data in the most recent quarterly report of NERC showed that the number of unmetered customers in Nigeria was more than six million.

Unmetered customers in Nigeria, according to analysis of the first quarter 2020 industry report that was recently released by the commission, was 6,245,916.

This indicates that a total of 245,916 power users may not benefit from the free six million meters that are planned for distribution by the government.

Findings from separate NERC quarterly reports showed that while the number of unmetered customers in Nigeria in the fourth quarter of 2019 was 6,456,275, the figure dropped by 210,359 to 6,245,916 in the first quarter of this year.

The commission said in its recent report, “Although there was a slight improvement during the quarter, the huge metering gap for end-use customers remains a key challenge in the industry.

“The records of the commission indicate that of the 10,477,856 registered electricity customers as at the end of the first quarter of 2020, only 4,231,940 (40.39 per cent) have been metered.

“Thus, 59.61 per cent of the registered electricity customers are still on estimated billing which has contributed to customer apathy towards payment of electricity bills.”

In comparison to the fourth quarter of 2019, the commission stated that registered and metered customers increased by one per cent and eight per cent respectively.

It explained that the increase in registered customer population was due to the ongoing customer enumeration exercise by power distribution companies.

The NERC stated that through this means, unregistered consumers of electricity were brought unto the Discos’ billing platform.

“Similarly, the increase in metered customers was attributed to the roll out of meters under the Meter Asset Provider scheme,” it added.

A review of the customer population data in the report indicated that all the Discos recorded progress in the metering of their customers as of March 31, 2020 compared with December 31, 2019.

Further findings showed that Abuja, Benin and Eko Discos had metered more than 50 per cent of their registered electricity customers as of March 31, 2020.

To ensure speedy metering of electricity customers in line with the target of closing the metering gap in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry by December 31, 2021, the commission said it had continued its monitoring of Discos.

It said the monitoring exercise was to ensure that the Discos implemented and complied with the provisions of the MAP Regulations to fast-track meter roll out.

The commission stated that during the quarter, it approved more preferred MAPs for Discos that had finalised their MAPs procurement process, increasing the total number of approved MAPs to 29 as of the end of the quarter.

The Deputy President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, told our correspondent that part of the recent power sector discussion between organised labour and the Federal Government also bordered on the provision of meters to unmetered customers

Ajaero, who doubles as General Secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees, said it was important for power users to have meters in order to accurately pay for what they consumed.

On his part, the Secretary-General, Nigerian Electricity Consumers Advocacy Network, Uket Obonga, said power distributors must work with their respective Meter Asset Providers to close the metering gap in Nigeria.

Ubonga welcomed the six million free meter scheme of the Federal Government. He noted that the exercise would considerably reduce the metering gap if adequately implemented.

PoliticsEndSARS: We Can’t Guarantee Security During Yuletide – Law Enforcement Officers by Le124(op): 7:51am On Nov 02, 2020
…Say ‘we are endangered species’

…Add Police Commission can’t force officers to work

…PSC denies threatening to dismiss officers over delayed return to duty

…Pleads with officers to resume work in spirit of nationalism

By Kingsley Omonobi

Law enforcement officers in areas worst affected by the #EndSARS protests in the southern part of the country have resolved to continue to stay off their duty posts, especially during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. Rising from a joint meeting of the law enforcement officers weekend, a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, who attended the meeting, told PRNigeria, that Nigerians should rather find a way to protect themselves from thugs, hoodlums and miscreants during the seasonal period.

According to him, the meeting which was attended by officers of the Nigerian military, security, intelligence and response agencies analysed how the violent assaults on innocent security personnel during the #EndSARS protest significantly dampened the morale of many of the servicemen and women. “In these ember months, and up to Christmas period and the New Year, I doubt if any of the security services can guarantee maximum security as usual. There is no way we can discharge our statutory responsibilities and function when we have become soft targets of miscreants and violent persons,” he said.

The DPO further said he would not allow any of his officers and men to be drafted to life-threatening beats and assignments during the period. He added: “Our destroyed facilities are yet to be reconstructed and rehabilitated; our looted armouries are yet to be restocked and when our men and women are yet to get over the humiliation of the atrocities committed on them by the same people we are charged to protect, how can we return to our duty post?” In the aftermath of the #EndSARS nationwide demonstrations, which turned violent and led to the loss of lives, including that of police personnel, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, on Friday, directed men of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, to, henceforth, protect themselves against any attack by hoodlums. Speaking while on an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Adamu said: “If anybody touches or assaults you, you can also protect yourself.” But despite the marching order given by the IGP, PRNigeria gathered from a cross-section of personnel who preferred anonymity, that they were still sceptical about returning to their duty posts, especially in volatile areas in some states.

Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission, PSC, has also stated it would not force the security personnel to return to work after the recent attack on them and their facilities. While denying a report that the commission would dismiss any police officer who failed to return to work, its spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, said the agency had condemned the killing of security personnel on legitimate duties and had warned that any attempt to make the country lawless would be an ill-wind that would blow nobody any good. In an official statement, Ani said the commission could only plead with the officers to in the spirit of nationalism, return to work while government works out enough protective programmes for them. He said: “The commission will continue to do its best to ensure the police is motivated to do its job.
“The commission, being the employers of the Police, is pained that Policemen were killed and stations set ablaze throughout the country. ‘’It will be very insensitive at this point for anyone to say that the commission will dismiss any policeman who didn’t return to work. ‘’The commission is even at present mourning the deaths of its gallant officers who were killed in the crisis.’’
