John Charles Makurdi A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomole, on Tuesday, sought for an out-of-court settlement in the N10bn libel suit instituted against him by Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom. Ortom had filed the suit against the former APC chairman over his comments against him at a press conference on July 27, 2018, where Oshiomhole accused the governor of having a hand in the death of two Catholic priests and other parishioners at Mbalom Community, Gwer East Local Government Area on the grounds that one of the priests had preached a “very critical sermon” against him (the governor). Earlier on the suit, Oshiomhole had filed six preliminary objections which the court resolved all in Ortom’s favour. However, at the resumption of the case on Tuesday, counsel for Ortom, Samuel Irabor, submitted that he was ready to call his witnesses, but said that Oshiomhole’s counsel, Festus Jumbo had informed him that they have considered putting up a retraction of the publication and it would be ready within a week. He said he was applying for another date to take a look at the terms of settlement canvassed by Oshiomhole. Titus Akhuwa who held the brief of Oshiomhole’s counsel, Festus Jumbo confirmed the submission of Governor Ortom’s lawyer. The Presiding judge, Justice Augustine Ityonyiman of State High Court sitting in Makurdi, after listening to both parties, adjourned the case to October 29, for a report on the out-of-court settlement. https://punchng.com/oshiomhole-pleads-for-out-of-court-settlement-in-ortoms-n10bn-suit/ |
By Bashir Bello Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State, yesterday suspended his Special Adviser on Media, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, over some unguarded verbal attacks on President Muhammadu Buhari on the social media platform. Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who conveyed the governor’s directive in a statement, said the suspension was with immediate effect. He said though the media aide had owned up that the indiscreet comment was his personal opinion, but as a public figure, it would be difficult to differentiate between personal opinion and official stand on matters of public concern. The governor warned political appointees and public servants to guard against making statements capable of drawing unnecessary controversy and heating up the polity. The statement reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Ganduje to the policies and programmes of President Buhari’s administration. The suspension might not be unconnected to Yakasai’s tweet on Sunday on his twitter handle @dawisu, where he said: “Whatever you do in life, make sure you never lose your voice. Speak up against injustice, speak up against inaction, speak up for what you believe in, demand for your right and never let a temporary position or privilege stop you from standing with the people. Enough is enough! #EndSARS,” the tweet however reads. Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/10/ganduje-suspends-media-aide-over-verbal-attack-on-buhari/

What is eternal life and what is heaven, where do people who had eternal life end there life. You are complicating the whole thing. It's two ways , its either you end up in hell or heaven and it's those who are save that will make heaven. So what's the point of been save and not make heaven Kobojunkiee: |
So many people especially some ministers have argued that salvation is to eternity, that once someone give his/ her life to christ that he/ she will make heaven even if the person commit sin and did not repent of that sin been fornication, lying, stealing etc. That the person will only be punished on earth according to the law of the land, but won't stop the person from entering the kingdom of God . Citing Ephesians 2.8 and some other scriptures. And on the other hand many people have have also argued that someone can actually lose their salvation if the person commit sin .Matthew 24:4-34. Who is right? And what is the bible stand on this? Can someone actually commit sin after confessing christ and still make heaven or not? |

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would not participate in a virtual debate with 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden after organizers plan to stage the rivals’ next face-off virtually to protect the health and safety of those involved. “I’m not going to do a virtual debate,” Trump, who’s recovering from COVID-19 at the White House, said in an interview with Fox Business. “I’m not going to waste my time with a virtual debate. That’s not what debating is all about. You sit behind a computer and do a debate, that is ridiculous,” Trump said. The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) announced on Thursday morning that the second Trump-Biden encounter, scheduled for Oct. 15, “will take the form of a town meeting, in which the candidates would participate from separate remote locations.” The town meeting participants and the moderator, it added, would be located at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida. Bill Stepien, Trump’s campaign manager, said in a statement that “there is no need for this unilateral declaration,” referring to the change to the debate format. “The safety of all involved can easily be achieved without cancelling a chance for voters to see both candidates go head to head,” said Stepien, who also recently tested positive for COVID-19. “We’ll pass on this sad excuse to bail out Joe Biden and do a rally instead,” Stepien said. The presidential candidates met for their first debate in the race in Cleveland, Ohio on Sept. 29, two days before the incumbent tested positive for COVID-19. Biden has undergone multiple tests since Trump’s diagnosis, with each one returning negative. The former vice president has said the second debate should not be held if his Republican opponent still has the virus. Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, said on Thursday that the Democrat intended to take part in the virtual debate next week. “Vice President Biden looks forward to speaking directly to the American people and comparing his plan for bringing the country together and building back better with Donald Trump’s failed leadership on the coronavirus that has thrown the strong economy he inherited into the worst downturn since the Great Depression,” the spokesperson said in a statement. Frank Fahrenkopf, head of the CPD, told CNN that the panel spoke with both campaigns “just before” it announced the decision to hold the Miami debate virtually but did not consult with them about the decision. Fahrenkopf said that the decision had the support of the Cleveland Clinic, the commission’s health advisers, while also acknowledging that it was fully within Trump’s right to decline to debate. “There is no law requiring any presidential candidate to debate,” he explained, adding: “So it is up to every candidate to decide whether they want to debate or not. ” Trump returned to the White House on Monday, where he continues to receive COVID-19 treatment after a three-day hospitalisation. Speaking to Fox Business on Thursday, the president said he was feeling “perfect,” while appearing eager to hit the campaign trail as Biden’s lead over him in national polls continues widening. “I think I’m better … to a point where I’d love to do a rally tonight. I wanted to do one last night. “I feel perfect. There’s nothing wrong,” Trump said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals self-isolate for at least 10 days after the onset of symptoms from COVID-19, which has infected more than 7.55 million people and killed nearly 212,000 in the U.S. Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/10/trump-refuses-to-take-part-in-virtual-debate-with-biden/

By Ebele Orakpo It’s often said that what a man can do, a woman can do even better. This saying has been proven to be true in the North-Eastern region of Nigeria, which has been the theatre of war between the forces of evil (Boko Haram terrorists) and good (the Security agencies and the poor masses) for about 11 years. In Adamawa State, one of the states being ravaged by the Boko Haram, considered the third most dangerous terrorist organisation on earth after Al Qaeda and The Islamic State, lives a queen by all standards, by name, Sarauniya (Queen) Amina Bakari Gombi, a wife, mother, hunter, warrior, and tailor. Due to her exploits as a warrior, she has entered the folklore of the locals just like the legendary Queen Amina of Zazzau, Hausa warrior queen who ruled in the mid-16th Century. Perhaps, one can confidently say that Queen Amina has come alive in Aisha Gombi, Queen Hunter and nemesis of Boko Haram fighters. At a time when many, including men, were running away from the insurgents who were raiding communities, maiming, killing raping, and abducting men, women, and children, and razing down villages, Aisha stood to be counted. She decided to use the gift God gave her, hunting skills, to protect her people, rescue the captured, especially women and children, from Boko Haram enclaves. Aisha is among the many hunters enlisted by the Nigerian Army to track and capture Boko Haram fighters. In this chat with Vanguard, the beautiful, brave, bold, and dauntless Aisha speaks on several issues including the reason she joined the war against Boko Haram and amnesty for the insurgents, noting that her driving force is freedom for her people and Nigerians at large. Excerpts Venturing into male-dominated profession According to the soft-spoken Queen Hunter, a sobriquet she got from appreciative hunters and locals whose lives and livelihoods she has helped to save, becoming a hunter, a profession seen as an exclusive preserve of men, was a calling. She was born into a family of hunters and she inherited the profession from her father who inherited it from his own father. As a young girl growing up in her village in Adamawa State near the Sambisa forest, the Boko Haram enclave, she would go hunting for guinea fowls, antelopes and baboons with her grandfather. In the course of time, she became proficient as it is said that practice makes perfect. Joining the fight against insurgency Speaking on why she joined the fight against the insurgents, Aisha said she saw the way the terrorists were killing innocent and defenseless people, destroying property, abducting people, and razing whole villages. The tigress in her couldn’t keep calm when her village came under attack; so when others were running away, she decided to stay back and fight. There was no way she could watch the terrorists take over her beloved hometown without a fight. She was determined to give the terrorists a run for their money. Perhaps, she, like Queen Esther in the Bible, Aisha was prepared by her creator for a time like this. People couldn’t believe it. They felt she was out of her mind, trying to attempt the impossible. They must have given her the popular Hausa adage: Karambani akwiya, gai da kura which means (it was pure meddlesomeness on the part of the goat to think she could greet the hyena without disaster. i.e. Don’t attempt the impossible.) But Aisha was ready to face the terrorists. Preparedness meets opportunity Then the opportunity came for her to officially join the fight. She did not hesitate to grab it with both hands. In her case, it was an opportunity meeting with preparedness. The Nigerian military engaged in this unconventional war with Boko Haram knew that to win the war, intelligence-gathering was non-negotiable and who can better give the needed information than the locals especially hunters and vigilantes who know the nooks and crannies of the area! She volunteered to use her talent to help save her people and country from terrorists. Aisha was one of the few women recruited by the Nigerian military as volunteers to fight Boko Haram on an ad hoc basis. Even youths were not left out as the military formed an arm of the Joint Task Force, JTF, named Civilian JTF made up of civilians who went to war to protect their communities. Aisha said that the hunters know the terrorists’ hideouts in the forest better than the soldiers. Today, Aisha finds fulfillment in battling the terrorists and freeing their captives, mostly women and children. Passion, women, and terrorists Just as Boko Haram terrorists are said to be driven by ideology and not motivated by money or material gains, Aisha is not motivated by money but love for her people and country. She didn’t bat an eyelid when she had to sell her sewing machine just to raise money to purchase a more powerful rifle. A report by ABC in 2016 had said that ISIS terrorists feared the female members of the Zeravani unit, a branch of the Kurdish Peshmerga (Black Tigers) so much that they are referred to as ISIS’ nightmare. It is said that ISIS fighters fear them because it is a taboo for them to be killed by women so they steer clear of the female fighters. Aisha boldly says that Boko Haram terrorists know her and fear her. She is in fact, a terror to the terrorists. Many women becoming hunters Aisha’s attitude and her love for hunting endeared her to many women who were influenced to become hunters so today, Adamawa State boasts of almost 100 female hunters. She said she enjoys the support, encouragement and cooperation of the locals, particularly the women. Security, everyone’s business Aisha believes that the security of lives and property should not be left in the hands of government and security agencies alone but should involve everyone. She noted that women have a big role to play to ensure the safety of lives and property of Nigerians, adding that Nigeria will not develop as long as there is no peace in the land. Challenges She said the major challenge the hunters face is convincing the military to allow them to go on rescue missions. Perhaps, the military is afraid for their lives. Another challenge is funds as hunters sometimes have to raise the money for ammunition and to hire and fuel vehicles. Despite all these, Aisha said that any time she goes to the bush, she feels very happy. Juggling work with home On how she combines her duties as a wife, mother, commander, tailor, hunter, and warrior, Aisha said she has no problem juggling her responsibilities at home and outside the home. She said she handles her domestic affairs in the way an any good wife would handle her domestic affairs and also handles her work as a warrior very well. Above all, her husband has been very supportive and is in fact, very proud of her. He believes that her success is his success. Regrets On whether she has ever regretted joining this war which entails leading the hunters under her command deep into the forest in search of the terrorists and their captives, she said never! She enjoys fighting for her people and bringing smiles to their faces. She, however, appeals to the Federal Government to equip the military and the volunteers with more sophisticated weapons. She said she and her team sometimes spend so many days in the forest searching for terrorist hideouts and when they capture the terrorists, they force them to lead them to where the victims are kept, then the terrorists are handed over to the military while they rescue the victims. Her team has rescued a huge number of captives and captured many Boko Haram fighters. Multi-talented Aisha does not only hunt for animals and terrorists, she is also a tailor. She said tailoring has helped her to meet some of her financial needs. She advised women to ensure they don’t just sit at home and wait for the man to provide all their needs. Amnesty On amnesty to repentant Boko Haram fighters by the Federal Government, Aisha said if they are truly repentant, then it’s good but if the repentance is not genuine, then it’s bad. She said that when they repent, they are kept in a place where they are closely monitored and their habits reviewed before they are released into society so it’s between the terrorists and government. …Suspect, accomplice, to be charged to court after Investigation – EFCC By Bashir Bello The Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command on Wednesday says it has arrested a Dubai-bound passenger, Sanusi Labaran with 5,342 Automated Teller Machine, ATM cards concealed inside a sack of beans while trying to board a flight, Ethiopian flight to Dubai through the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, MAKIA. The Comptroller, Nasir Ahmed disclosed this while handing over the suspect and other seized items of seven pieces of memory cards and one SD card to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Zonal Office in Kano. Ahmed further said investigations will reveal whether the ATM cards were in use or expired and how much was domiciled in the ATM cards. The Comptroller commended his men and officers at MAKIA for the job well done while describing the act by the suspect as a disservice to the nation as it has a negative impact on the economy and foreign reserve of the country. According to him, “The Custom were empowered with Section 150 to search and section 157 empowers for detention and seizures of the ATM. “The law will take it course. We will hand him over to the EFCC. We are 100 per cent sure that the EFCC will do a thorough job because this a disservice to the nation,” Ahmed said. Responding the Kano Zonal Head, Mr Sanusi Aliyu vowed that the suspect and other of his accomplice will be charged to court upon completion of its investigation and one’s prima facea case is established. “EFCC will conduct a diligent and thorough investigation into the reasons why one person is carrying over 5,000 ATM to another country. “EFCC will not only stop at investigating the person in whose possession the items were recovered but will go a long way in tracing the owners of the cards and reasons behind efforts to ship the cards to Dubai. “After the completion of the investigation and one’s prima facea case is established, the suspect and his accomplice will be duly charged to the court of law. “The mere fact that he alone was holding over 5,000 ATM cards raises a very strong suspicion and red flag. We believe he is not alone. He has other people that have been working with him either independently or as a group. “The fact that he has a resident permit in Dubai tells us he probably has been in this business for a time. We will join hands with all relevant agencies to find out how many times he has left this country and then for what purpose and should we have any offence linked with his earlier travels, we will also coopt that into the charges that he will face before the law in the court,” Mr Aliyu however stated. By Kingsley Omonobi The Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Frank Mba, has said the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), cannot be scrapped because of its potency in combating criminality and deadly criminal gangs in the country. Mba, however, disclosed that the Police headquarters is currently reforming the operations of SARS officers nationwide to curtail their excesses. Speaking during an Instagram Live Chat with Nigerian artiste, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley on Tuesday morning, DCP Mba advised Nigerians to take video recordings of SARS operatives who abuse their fundamental human rights “as long as it is safe to do so.” Recall that the singer cancelled a planned demonstration against SARS infractions and molestations on Tuesday morning. Following the excesses of its operatives, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had banned SARS personnel from engaging in routine patrols, stop-and-search, mounting of roadblocks and traffic checks with immediate effect. Emphasizing that the IGP and the Force were committed to reforming SARS. Mba said, “What we need to do is to reform SARS and make them responsive, responsible and make them work in accordance with laid down procedures. “We need them to continue to respond to violent crimes. We need them to continue to respond to armed robberies. We need them to continue to respond to kidnappings. ” During the interaction, Naira Marley agreed that the special arm of the Police should not be scrapped but be reformed saying, “You talk about End SARS, you cannot end SARS but let us ask for reform. Why do you want to end SARS? Are you an armed robber?. While expressing support for the directive of the IGP to get SARS operatives off the roads, Marley said, “SARS is a special arm that should only come out during robbery incidents.” Furthermore, he urged the Police to give an update on SARS operatives that have been arrested and what has been done to compensate the families of the victims allegedly killed by SARS officers. By Rasheed Sobowale The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, in his presidential speech to mark the 60th Independence of the nation shaded his predecessors claiming they presided over the near destruction of the country. Buhari in his speech also boasted that “no government in the past did what we are doing with such scarce resources” and that “we have managed to keep things going in spite of the disproportionate spending on security.” In his attack on previous governments, Buhari said; “Those in the previous Governments from 1999 – 2015 who presided over the near destruction of the country have now the impudence to attempt to criticize our efforts”. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo served as the Nigerian president between 1999 and 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Umaru Musa Yar’Adua succeeded Obasanjo in 2007 but was unable to complete his first term tenure. He died in office 5th May 2010. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who was the vice to Yar’Adua was sworn in as the president 6th May, 2010 following the demise of Yar’Adua. He also won the 2011 presidential election and served till 2015. Jonathan was defeated by the President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He will later win the 2019 election to serve the second term. Obasanjo is known to be a strong critic of governments that succeeded him. The ex-president in 2013 wrote an 18-paged letter titled: “Before It is Too Late” to criticize the government of Goodluck Jonathan. He also wrote a letter to Buhari in July 2019 criticising his government. The opening paragraph of the letter reads; “I am constrained to write to you this open letter. I decided to make it an open letter because the issue is very weighty and must be greatly worrisome to all concerned Nigerians and that means all right-thinking Nigerians and those resident in Nigeria.” Buhari’s administration is renown for always blaming the past administration for the governmental issues it is facing. Some of the occasions his government has blamed the past administration are highlighted in our headlines below: FG blames past administrations for poor rural roads Blame past govt for bad roads, schools and hospitals ―BMO FG blames past administrations for poor rural roads We’ve done far more than previous govt — Osinbajo Osinbajo blames irresponsible leaders for Nigeria’s woes Osinbajo shifts blame again Grand corruption in Jonathan era: Osinbajo releases details Osinbajo to past Govts: What did you do with our money Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/10/nigeria60-obasanjo-yaradua-jonathan-presided-over-near-destruction-of-nigeria-%e2%80%95-buhari/

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has suspended its planned nationwide strike that would have started today, Monday, September 28, in protest against the hike in pump price of fuel and electricity tariff. Earlier, there were indications that the Federal Government and NLC might reach an agreement to avert the looming nationwide strike. The Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo(SAN) tweeted that there was hope the industrial crisis might be avoided. He stated on his verified Twitter handle(@fkeyamo): “Still negotiating with labour at exactly 12.34am. Some progress have been made. Concrete proposals on the table from both sides. “Details being worked on by the temporary Secretariat. Gradually moving towards a point of convergence. Let’s hope….” Furthermore, a source told Vanguard that it is possible the tariff will be suspended for two weeks, but said nothing specific about fuel pump price. The source also said a joint government/Labour committee will be set up to review the issues within those two weeks. Vanguard also learned that a communique is being hammered out, an indication that some sort of agreement had been arrived at. To avert the strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) billed to commence on Monday, the House of Representatives has offered organised labour some palliatives. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, at a negotiation meeting with labour on Sunday in Abuja said the palliatives would be included in the proposed 2021 budget. Gbajabiamila said that the budget would soon be presented to the National Assembly, stressing that some palliatives were being considered to cushion the effects of an increase in electricity tariff and fuel price hike. The palliatives, according to the speaker, includes distribution of food items, reduction of taxes on minimum wage, and payment of some special allowances. Others are involved in the ownership of housing programmes through mortgage and distribution of special buses to public institutions that run on autogas. Gbajabiamila said that the palliatives would go a long way to assuage the suffering of Nigerians. He said the lawmakers would also make provision in the budget to tackle the eight million deficit of meters to enable Nigerians to access them. Gbajabiamila, who described estimated billing as a scam, said: “I have never heard it anywhere in the world, so if we may have to provide for the deficit, we will have to do that.” He appealed to labour to suspend the planned strike, saying embarking on industrial action at this critical time would not augur well for the citizenry. “You know, you cannot go on strike at this time, if you go on strike, the people you think you are protecting will be at the receiving end, we share your philosophy regarding workers’ rights. “We know what Nigerians are going through, our position on electricity billing is obvious, the only thing now is to continue to talk, I am concerned about the people out there. “Shutting down the markets, banks and other places of work is my worry, I am concerned about the people,” he said. Gbajabiamila said that there was the need for every Nigerian to be properly metered in order to capture the true cost, adding that the lawmakers would consider metering in the 2021 budget. The President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, said that the increase in electricity tariff and hike in fuel price had eroded the purchasing power of Nigerian workers. He said the initial plan was that there would not be an increase in electricity tariff until meters were provided for Nigerians. Wabba commended the speaker for the intervention, adding that he had consistently represented the interest of Nigerians. The NLC president said there was a valid court judgment nullifying the electricity tariff, adding that the judgment of the National Industrial Court asking NLC to stop its planned strike could not be sustained. Wabba insisted that the NLC would go ahead with the strike if its demands were not met by the Federal Government before the expiration of the ultimatum. Throughout the years I lived with my mother, I was never in doubt she hated me”. Shenne, a 43-year-old industrial nurse said, as part of the reason why she refused to attend her biological mother’s funeral. “She had me at 19 when she got pregnant for a fairly well-to-do businessman who ended up marrying someone else. When she re-married, I was about six years old, and even at that age, I realized I was no better than a maid as far as my mother was concerned. I did all the household chores and when my half-siblings started arriving, I was forced to wash all their dirty nappies as well as do the household chores whether I liked it or not. Anytime I fell short of expectation, I was thoroughly beaten. “As I grew older, my mother’s grudges against me increased, and I constantly wet the bed – not a surprise really, considering the stress I was under. My mother’s solution to my bed-wetting problem was to wake me up in the night and wallop me with a shoe. She then made me pee on coal embers and promised I wouldn’t wet the bed that night. If I did, I would get beaten again in the morning. My step-father was no better. He agreed with my mum that I was the ugliest of the children. His children wear lovely clothes whilst I was dressed in clothes sourced from the ‘bend-down boutiques’. Whenever there were any children’s parties, I was the Cinderella left behind to do all the rotten chores with my mother constantly abusing me physically and mentally. “I was still in primary school at age 12 because most of the time, I didn’t attend classes. It was at this time that my step-father started raping me. He was almost as violent as my mother – punching me all the time. He always said I was so ugly that no man would have me, that he was doing me a favour by even touching me. If I protested, he would slap me across the face. All the time I asked for my father’s whereabouts, my mother would laugh at me, pointing out the fact that my father was a randy bastard who kept having one wife after the other. “It was a kind neighbour who wanted to know what my father had to say to my abuse, that helped me find out my father’s address. When next my step-father raped me and fell asleep, I removed some money from his pocket and fled while he slept off his lust. I then traced my father to the address my neighbour gave me. He was shocked to see me to say the least. When I told him all I’d gone through, he actually wept. He said he’d tried to look for me but when he heard my mother had married, he didn’t want to upset a family arrangement. “He then took me to his elder sister’s place and she was even more shocked than my father was when she saw me. I must have looked a fright but she grudgingly agreed for me to live with her. Her only child was abroad with her family and she lived alone with some domestic helps. “When I finally settled into her impressive looking house, she regarded me with caution. With my mother’s lies on the atrocities I was alleged to have committed, she didn’t know what to believe. But she took me to a second-hand market and bought clothes and shoes. For the first time in my life, I had real toilet soap instead of the abrasive soda soap that my mum always bought, which doubled as my bath soap, and dishwashing soap. I was re-enrolled into the local primary school and put back a year because I failed the test for my current class. “In my new home, I actually had my own room and slept on a bed for the first time in my life. Big Mummy, as I called my auntie, already had a maid but I eagerly did most of the chores. I’d been used to all that and more, and didn’t want to give her an excuse to send me back to my nasty mother. She encouraged me to attend evening lessons run by one of the neighbours and I discovered I actually enjoyed learning. Once in a while, my mother would visit but I looked frightened of her that Big Mummy asked her to stop coming. All she wanted anyway, was the money she always got off Big Mummy. She tried a couple more times and even threatened to take me but Big Mummy threatened her with police action that she eventually stopped calling. “With time, I finished secondary school and trained as a nurse. Big Mummy encouraged me to have enough experience in a proper teaching hospital before I later trained as an industrial nurse. After I got married to my medical doctor’s husband, he used his influence to get me a job as a nurse in an industrial firm. As my life progressed beyond my wildest dreams, I had to pinch myself that what was happening to me was real. “When Big Mummy had breast cancer, I was devastated. Thanks to my training and her being the mother I never really had, I was constantly by her side. When her daughter visited and saw how well her mother was being taken care of by me, she was full of praises and appreciation. Believe me, it was no fun looking after a bed-ridden woman whom you’d always looked up to as strong and independent. My heart broke as she wasted away but I made sure she had all the care and love she could get at home. She refused to stay in the hospital and would rather my husband treated her. When she eventually died at the age of 68 at home, she was surrounded by all the people she loved. My mother shocked us all by attending the funeral with her no-good husband. I simply ignored both of them as I’d severed contact with that side of my family ages ago. They obviously didn’t belong anywhere and came to sit with my friends and relations at the night party. My husband restrained me from being nasty to both of them and he saw to their being served. If it were left to me, they would have been totally disgraced out of the party. “Now that I am a mother of three, I think back constantly to how my mother treated me and I shuddered at the fact that you could give life to a child and treat that child like dirt. I never forgave her and when she died two years ago, I didn’t bother to attend her burial. My half-siblings came for money and it was my husband who gave it to them. As far as I was concerned, I’d already buried my mum when Big Mummy died. “To this day, I never mentioned the constant rape by my stepfather to anyone; it still fills me with shame. Maybe it’s about time rape victims were encouraged to come forward. Unfortunately, the rape law of the land is not encouraging even after all the efforts of various NGOs that rapists be named and shamed and jailed. A colleague recently dragged her neighbour’s driver to the police station for raping her house-maid. When the police interrogated the girl, she was asked if the boy had struggled whilst entering her or if he entered easily. The girl said there was no struggling. Was there blood? NO. “You see,” said the main interrogator triumphantly, it’s not rape!” Rape is forcing yourself on your victim without her consent whether she’s a virgin girlfriend or a wife. In a society where men do that all of the time under the pretext that the more a victim protests, the more she wants it, rapists will continue to keep quiet for being branded teasers”. The death toll from a jihadist attack on the convoy of Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has risen to 30, security sources said Saturday. Two sources told AFP fatalities from the attack Friday in restive Borno state had doubled as more bodies were found and now included 12 policemen, five soldiers, four members of a government-backed militia and nine civilians. “The tally has increased to 30 as many bodies were picked in the surrounding areas after the attack,” one of the sources said, adding that “many people were injured”. Sources had earlier told AFP that a convoy transporting Governor Zulum came under attack from insurgents on Friday near the town of Baga on the shores of Lake Chad. A second security source gave the same death toll of 30 from the assault and said the militants seized eight vehicles. “The terrorists made away with an armoured personnel carrier, a gun truck and six sports utility vehicles in the convoy,” the source said. Police confirmed in a statement that the attack by suspected jihadists on the “security convoy” had killed eight policemen and three government-backed militia members. It said 13 other people had been wounded and the attack had been “successfully repelled”. Zulum — who sources said was unhurt in the attack — had flown to the area to prepare for the return of residents displaced from Baga by the conflict. He was driving in the convoy accompanied by government officials under tight security towards Baga ahead of the arrival of the returnees. The IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group maintains most of its camps on islands in Lake Chad and the region is known as a bastion for the jihadists. The militant group has recently intensified attacks on military and civilian targets in the region. In July Zulum’s convoy came under gun attack from ISWAP outside Baga, forcing him to cancel his trip to the town. The decade-long insurgency in northeast Nigeria has killed 36,000 people and forced over 2 million from their homes. Most of the displaced have been housed into squalid camps where they depend on food handouts from international charities. Local authorities have been encouraging the displaced to go back to their homes despite concern from aid agencies of the security risks. ISWAP splintered from the main Boko Haram group in 2016 and has gone on to be the dominant insurgent force in the region. By Olayinka Ajayi The flag-bearer of National Conscience Party, NCP, in the just-concluded Edo State governorship election, Pastor Peters Omoragbon, has rejected the outcome of the election. Omoragbon in a statement entitled “Rejoice not Godwin Enogheghase Obaseki-This is but a Pyrrhic Victory”, blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for not obeying court judgement regarding the delisting of some political parties in Nigeria. He maintained that the election was marred by vote-buying, ballot box snatching, militarisation and compromised by APC, PDP, INEC and security operatives Omoragbon also expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the election, as he queried the people for hailing the election. According to him, “It’s unfortunate that those across the globe are praising the election as free, fair and very democratic. “Such sentiment begs the truth. The election witnessed monumental financial inducement of the electorate.” He urged his teeming supporters to remain calm, as he assured them that NCP would rely on the court to obtain justice, adding that he is optimistic that the court would do the needful by nullifying the election. Arsenal are interested in signing Jorginho from Premier League rivals Chelsea, while Atletico Madrid are confident of securing a loan deal for Gunners midfielder Lucas Torreira. Jorginho is one of a number of midfielders Arsenal are keen on, with Atletico's Thomas Partey and Lyon's Houssem Aouar also on their radar. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was assistant to Pep Guardiola when Manchester City came close to signing Jorginho from Napoli in 2018. However, the Italy international appears to be part of Frank Lampard's plans at Chelsea, and has captained the side in both of their Premier League games so far this season. While Arsenal continue to search for a new midfielder, it looks as though they will be without Torreira for the 2020/21 campaign as he nears a move to Atletico. The La Liga side are keen to take the Uruguay international on loan and retain the option to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season. Alternatively, Arsenal would like to sell Torreira, but would be willing to agree to a loan deal if it includes the obligation for Atletico to buy the 24-year-old. If Arsenal are able to persuade Atletico to buy Torreira, the money raised could go towards triggering the £45m release clause in Partey's contract. Source: sky sports news

The Nigerian government has said it considers it disrespectful to the Sovereignty of the country for any outside country to apply punitive measures such as visas restriction on its citizens. The Nigerian government made this known in a statement issued by Mr Ferdinand Nwonye, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday in Abuja. This comes as a response to the recent announcement of the U.S. and the United Kingdom to impose visa restrictions on those who undermine electoral processes. The Nigerian Government said it was committed to providing all necessary logistic, financial and security support to the electoral process. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to state that the Nigerian government has taken note of the concerns of some of our partners, especially the U.S. and UK governments regarding the elections in Edo and Ondo States. “They have also expressed their intentions to take punitive measures against those who decide to, in what they termed as, undermine democracy. “It is important to highlight that the responsibility for the conduct of elections in Nigeria solely resides with the Independent National Electoral Commission and State Independent Electoral Commissions. “The Federal Government, and especially the President, is committed to providing all necessary logistic, financial and security support to the electoral process. “The President has continually urged all parties and contestants to peacefully conduct themselves before, during and after the elections, and supported patriotic non-governmental initiatives such as the Abdusalami Abubakar-led Peace Committee. “Furthermore, it should be noted that there are ample provisions in our laws to sanction violators and perpetrators of electoral violence and fraud. “It would be considered disrespectful of the sovereignty of Nigeria for any outside authority to sit in judgment over the conduct of our citizens and apply punitive measures such as visa restriction, unilaterally. “While we appreciate the support and encouragement of our international partners such as the EU, we urge our equally valued partners such as the UK and U.S. to cooperate with our relevant agencies,” the government said. The government called on the partners to support security agencies by providing them whatever concrete evidence of observed misconduct to allow our laws and regulations to take their course. The Nigerian government also expressed solidarity with the government and people of the U.S. as regards their forthcoming election, which it hoped would be free from interference and violence. The Action Democratic Party (ADP), has called on the Federal government of Nigeria, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, to ensure that, free and fair elections are conducted both in Edo and Ondo State, to show loyalty and his readiness to leave a good legacy to the Nigerian people as he departs power in 2023. Stand-alone elections have a history of violence, election malpractices and other irregularities, despite concentration of resources for such elections. By Clever Advertising ADP said that there should be no excuse whatsoever, for the Edo election slated for Saturday, September 19th this weekend, across the 18 local government in the state, not to be peaceful, owing to the fact that, over 30, 000 security personnel are deployed for the election, which should be adequate to guard and guide the people and their franchises. The party, in a statement issued and signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Adelaja Adeoye, on Thursday, said that the expectations of Nigerians, in many of the elections, conducted by this administration, fall short, from the tradition of free and fair elections, that brought President Buhari in 2015, adjudged to be the finest transition of power. Nigerians will be happier, if the President can clearly instruct all those saddled with the upcoming elections, to conduct an election that will not bring disrepute to this government. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the IGP have greater roles to play in ensuring that, a decent election is conducted, also calling on all Edolites, to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner, that election is not war. The party said further that, level playing ground should be provided for all candidates participating in the election, so that their own impacts can be felt, without intimidation of any kind. ADP noted that it is not a good tradition, where at every election, Nigerians will be afraid to exercise their franchise, because of the fear of violence, “Federal Might”, and other funny political behavior by the government in power, stressing that, the only way the gains of our democracy can be beneficial to both Nigerians and our partners across the world, is when free and fair elections are conducted. The party commended the United States for slamming sanctions on election riggers, calling on the United Kingdom, European Union, and others, to increase the consequences and sanctions for election riggers in Nigeria. Tinubu had on Tuesday asked the electorates in Edo to reject Governor Obaseki, who is seeking re-election in office Nigerians have lambasted the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, following his attack on Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, in a viral video. Tinubu had on Tuesday asked the electorates in Edo to reject Governor Obaseki, who is seeking re-election in office. Speaking in a video aired on TVC, Tinubu said the people should vote out Obaseki in Saturday's election. Obaseki is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the September 19 election. Tinubu accused Obaseki of being a dictator in Edo, noting that the governor also lacked the rule of law and respect for the people of the state. He said, "I want to appeal to you to reject Godwin Obaseki in this coming election. I have suffered with many others to bring about this democratic regime that today we are enjoying in the country. “Then, Godwin Obaseki didn’t participate in any aspect of the struggle to enshrine democracy in the country. "Therefore, he could not understand the value and the pains associated with this democratic struggle. “He does not deserve any democratic ballot paper. Don’t vote for him, I appeal to all of you. “Obaseki demonstrated the act of dictatorship, lack of respect for rule of law, lack of respect for you, the people, who voted for those legislators prevented from being sworn-in." Reacting on Wednesday, many Nigerians said Tinubu's utterances on Obaseki was uncalled for and should be condemned. They explained that the APC National Leader cannot tell the people, who to vote for during elections in the country. One of them, Prince Zephaniah, described Tinubu as a non-democrat for attacking Obaseki in the viral video, noting that the people can no longer be deceived. He said, "We saw the democratic struggle that turned him to Lagos landlord. The generation that was deceived in this country is dead. You can't deceive this generation again." Akorede Oladipupo said Tinubu needed to be aware that the Nigerian people were now wiser. "I'm not for any political party because they are the same, but how could someone that called himself a democrat ask people to reject someone. So, he is not a democrat. "But when he was in their party, he was holy then? You (Tinubu) are rejected already, Nigerians are waiting for you to declare your ambition," he said. Akinyemi Opeyemi, one of those who also commented on the attack, wondered why Tinubu had refused to talk more on the issue of insecurity and the hardship being faced by Nigerians under the APC-led federal government. "He (Tinubu) is less concerned about insecurity and hardship in the country but how to expand his tentacles. Shame on those defending politicians like this. He is not a democrat," he said. Mr Uche Wills, another commentator, said the former Lagos governor does not have the right to tell Edo people, who to vote for during Saturday's governorship election. "Edo people are wise. Edo State is not Lagos. Tinubu can't fool Nigerians again after he landed the whole nation in a mess. He doesn't have shame and can't tell Edo people whom to vote for," he said. Also commenting, Ben Adeleye accused the APC National Leader of being greedy and selfish for asking people to vote against Governor Obaseki. He said, "Can you imagine the level of his (Tinubu) greediness. When he (Obaseki) was in APC, they said Edo should vote for him. "Now, he is in a different party, they want the people to reject him. This is greediness and selfishness." For Igbinovia Osazee, m the people of Edo State would surprise Tinubu during Saturday's governorship election due to his attack on Obaseki. "Thank you Tinubu for making us know how seriously you need to add Edo State to your colonies where you milk state resources. "We are smart and alive to know your antics and if you like bring your bullion van to our state, after all, it's our national cake," he said.

Abiodun Nejo, Ado Ekiti The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State on Tuesday set up an eight-member disciplinary committee saddled with the responsibility of hearing the reasons some members of the party were violating the National Executive Committee’s resolution on litigations. APC State Director of Media and Publicity, Elder Sam Oluwalana, said the disciplinary committee chaired by a former Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker, Patrick Ajigbolamu, was set up in line with the directive of APC NEC. Oluwalana stated that “You will recall that on the 25th June, 2020, the NEC passed a resolution directing members of the party not to institute any court action and to withdraw their cases in court in order to explore the internal conflict resolution mechanism of the party”. He said the party NEC frowned at the complete disregard of the affected members to the resolution hence the directive to the state chapter to “immediately set up a disciplinary committee to commence and complete the process of suspension of the affected members from the party.” The committee is to complete the assignment in 19 days and forward the proceedings and records to the national body. The APC director listed the erring members as Presidential Adviser, Senator Babafemi Ojudu; son-in-law to Senator Bola Tinubu, Oyetunde Ojo; former governorship aspirant, Dr wole Oluyede; Ayo Ajibade; and Femi Adeleye. Others are Chief Akin Akomolafe; Bamigboye Adegoroye; Olusoga Owoeye; Dele Afolabi; Toyin Oluwasola, Ben Oguntuase, and Bunmi Ogunleye. But reacting to the move, Ojudu said, “It is laughable and also against the constitution of the party because the state working committee lacks the power to suspend any member. It is only the ward that can do that. They are setting out on the path to perdition.” The NEC directive dated September 7, titled ‘Resolution and directive of the NEC on litigation by party members’ and signed by APC Head Legal Service, Dare Oketade, to the state chapter, stated, “You are expected to forward to the National Secretariat all records of the disciplinary proceedings against them for disobeying the directives of the NEC issued on June 25, 2020. “it is important that all the disciplinary procedures to be undertaken must be consistent with the right to fair hearing as enshrined in the party’s constitution. Also, note that the state legal adviser is expected to be part of every proceeding to give legal guidance and this exercise is expected to be completed and records sent to the party within 19 days.” https://punchng.com/ekiti-apc-begins-process-to-suspend-ojudu-11-others/
