PoliticsGo Beyond Twitter Ban, Suspend, Dissolve Nigeria, Ozekhome Begs FG by Le124(op): 3:06pm On Jun 05, 2021
Human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has asked the Federal Government to go beyond the suspension of micro-blogging site, Twitter, and “dissolve the Nigerian people which it has become so allergic to and no longer wants to see or hear about”.

The senior advocate also said the government is trying to cover its atrocities from global exposure with its decision to suspend the operations of Twitter in the country.

He made this known in a statement on Friday titled, ‘When A Tottering Government Twiddles Twitter’.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Twitter deleted a post by the Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday.Consequently, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of Twitter on Friday, citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Mobile network operators also said they received a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission to block access to Twitter in the country following the suspension by the government.Reacting in a statement, Ozekhome said, “Well, I am not surprised that the Federal Government has suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria. Are you? I have always said that this Government has a very thin skin for criticism. It is a government that cannot take punches, but delights in always giving punches to adversaries, real or imaginary. The Government knows that Nigerians now express their resentment and protest through Twitter, by telling the whole world how Nigeria has been turned into a corruption haven, and a sprawling field of butchery, extra-judicial executions and slaughtering.

“Those in Government do not want the world to hear about their atrocities. So, they just gleefully tell the world that they have suspended Twitter and that they would soon license other OTT and social media operations. These people in Government know that Nigerians have been reaching out to the whole world, and they are very embarrassed that the breeze has been blowing, and the smelly backside of the fowl is always being opened for the whole world to see and smell its odorous side. This is the same Government that undeservedly rode to power using the same Twitter and other social media platforms it now detests.

“My humble appeal to this Government is that it should go further than this. It should actually suspend or dissolve the Nigerian people which it has become so allergic to and no longer wants to see or hear about. Then, it can now go ahead to elect or select another people in place of the present Nigerians who appear to have become a nuisance to it.

“I am greatly disappointed about this government round and round. I feel very sad as a Nigerian being led by a Government of one scandal per day.”

PoliticsNorthern Women Protest In Abuja, Demand Referendum For South-East To Choose by Le124(op): 1:18pm On Jun 05, 2021
A group of women under the aegis of the Amalgamation of Northern Women Associations, on Saturday, demanded a referendum to allow Biafran agitators to chose whether or not to remain in Nigeria.

The coordinator of the group, Hadiza Adamu, spoke on behalf of other members, during a protest in Abuja, on Saturday.

She said, “Nigerian History has shown that women carry the heavy burden of war and acts of insurrections and terrorism. We have gone through it from 1967 to 1971, our men died and left us with the children to cater for out of nothing, other men that survived simply moved on but we never moved on.

The aftermath of the war and the sufferings left lifetime scars in our hearts and on our bodies. It is for this reason that we (have) come together today and say we don’t want another war, another insurrection.

We, therefore, unanimously call on President Muhammadu Buhari as the leader and father of the country; and the leadership of the National Assembly, President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawal; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; to immediately call for a referendum in the country.

“Let people choose to live in peace in Nigeria or leave, any other group or nationality that wants to secede to exercise their rights of self-determination like the South-East has been agitated for decades to be allowed to leave Nigeria peacefully, without resorting to a second civil war.

Today the Igbo nation has turned the entire South-East to almost a war zone, northerners irrespective of their tribes are no longer safe, states’ infrastructures are no longer safe, service personnel from police to army are not safe, INEC offices and other symbols of democracy in the country are being destroyed on daily basis, our husbands that go to do business in South-East no longer return home safe, our political leaders who travel to the South-East on national assignments are assassinated in broad daylight.”

While tasking the security agencies to give his family justice, the distraught Onyekachi said it was unfortunate that Oguchi was killed by security personnel, who were supposed to protect him.

PoliticsObaseki: Oshiomhole Says Conflict Unfortunate, Ize-Iyamu Pleads For 14 Lawmakers by Le124(op): 3:43pm On Jun 01, 2021
IMMEDIATE past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, and the APC candidate in the September 19, 2020, Edo State Governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, have appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki, to be magnanimous in victory.

They appealed to Obaseki to consider a political solution to the case involving members-elect of the State Assembly who failed to present themselves for inauguration.

In his letter to Obaseki, which was made public by Oshiomhole’s media aide, Victor Oshioke, in Benin, on Monday, the former APC national chairman urged the governor to put the past behind. The letter read in part: “Congratulations on your victory at the Supreme Court which has effectively laid to rest all matters arising from the last election.

“As I had repeatedly reminded you during our several meetings, our relationship has through the years developed beyond being friends to being brothers of different parents.

“Whatever happened is unfortunate and I believe God has a reason for everything. I have put all behind me and moved on. As I have consistently advised, please be magnanimous in victory. You are the Governor of all Edo people, regardless of political leanings.

“Once again, congratulations Excellency! Please accept the renewed assurances of my very best wishes and high regards.”On his part, Ize-Iyamu, who dwelt on the issue of the 14 lawmakers-elect and some Local Government Council Chairmen in a separate letter, said, “Though the matter is in court, you are in a vantage position to consider an out-of-court settlement of the issue, in the overall interest of our state.”

He equally wrote, “I also urge the Governor to intervene in the issue of elected Local Government Chairmen, Vice-chairmen, Councilors and Supervisory Councillors, who sometimes ago were suspended and removed from office. Our appeal is that you consider paying them their entitlements since it is now late for them to return to their offices. This can also be through an out of court settlement”.

“Last Friday’s judgement of the Supreme Court puts an end to the series of litigations we had over last year’s governorship elections.

“We are happy that all these cases have come to an end. Now that it is all over, please accept my congratulations.”

However, the Edo State chapter of the PDP, which spoke through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare said, “Now that it is clear that the APC boobytraps of unwarranted, unnecessary, mindless and malicious court cases have collapsed, we have entered the season of congratulatory messages.Edo PDP thanks all Nigerians, especially Edo people, who have congratulated us and of course His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, on the resounding victory he recorded at the Supreme Court on Friday, May 28, 2021.”

HealthChina Confirms First Human Case Of Bird Flu Strain by Le124(op): 11:10am On Jun 01, 2021
China reported the world’s first human infection of the H10N3 bird flu strain on Tuesday but said the risk of it spreading widely among people was low.

A 41-year-old man was admitted to hospital with fever symptoms in the eastern city of Zhenjiang on April 28 and was diagnosed with H10N3 a month later, China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said in an online statement.
The NHC said there had been no human cases of H10N3 previously reported in the world.

Several strains of bird flu have been found among animals in China but mass outbreaks in humans are rare.
“The risk of large-scale spread is extremely low,” the NHC said, adding that the man was in a stable condition and his close contacts had reported no “abnormalities.”

It described H10N3 as low pathogenic — less likely to cause death or severe illness — in birds. The last human epidemic of bird flu in China occurred in late 2016 to 2017, with the H7N9 virus. The H7N9 has infected 1,668 people and claimed 616 lives since 2013, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

Following recent avian flu outbreaks in Africa and Eurasia, the head of China’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention last week urged stricter surveillance in poultry farms, markets and wild birds.

Covid-19 was first detected at a food and animal market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

CrimeBusinessman Kicks As Guard Arrested For Murder Dies In Ogun Police Custody by Le124(op): 9:15am On Jun 01, 2021
A businessman, Oluwaseun Adegoke, has lamented the death of one of his security guards, Shola Adeleke, in the custody of the Ogun State Police Command.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Adeleke and four other guards – Olaitan Oluwaseun, Jimoh Ibrahim, Wasiu Adeshina and Hakeem Elegbede – were arrested after the corpse of a yet-to-be-identified man was found a few metres to Adegoke’s farm at Ipaya in the Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

Upon the discovery, Adegoke said the Divisional Police Officer, Ayetoro Division, one Mr Olusesi, after telling him on the phone that the corpse was not found on his farm, requested his workers to come to the station for questioningThe businessman said, “As a law-abiding Nigerian with massive investments in the area, I immediately summoned my farm manager and security team to report and help with the police investigation.

“At the station, my farm manager gave a statement, but our security men were detained and asked to make statements and the Investigating Police Officer, Ahmed Abdullahi, asked the farm manager to leave the questioning room.

“Abdullahi was questioning my men and also writing the statement for them; he wrote that they said we gave them guns to secure the farm against sticks, which they told him. This was a red flag and I immediately asked my lawyers to come in.To my surprise, the police sensing that they had no case as all the complainants they paraded couldn’t identify any of my security men as the supposed attackers, transferred the case to the state Homicide Department, Eleweeran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.”The case, however, took another dimension when the businessman said Adeleke died in police custody, adding that despite the ongoing investigation, the police claimed that the corpse found a few metres from his farm had been buried.

He said, “On arrival at the Homicide Department, my men were about to be released when the IPO insisted that they must not be granted bail but must be tortured to confess to an offence they knew nothing about.

“On May 28, 2021, I received a distress call that one of our security men, Shola Adeleke, had died in police custody in circumstances the police couldn’t explainUpon his death, the police hurriedly released three members of our security team. One of my guards is still in their custody and I don’t know his current state. My question is, if truly there was ever a murder, why would the police release three of the suspects on the same day that one of them died? It is obvious that the police feel guilty.

“We have asked the police to produce the corpse found around the farm and till date, nothing has been produced as they claimed that it had been buried. How do you bury the evidence in a murder case and claim to be investigating the matter?

“The thing that escalated the matter was the fact that somebody died under my watch. I have been trying to hold on; we shall use every legal means available to us to fight this injustice. Shola Adeleke will not die in vain.”

CrimeGunmen Rob 25 Oyo Estate Households, Steal Money With POS Machine by Le124(op): 9:03am On Jun 01, 2021
Armed robbers numbering about 20 were said to have invaded Alaafia Estate at the Orogun area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, dispossessing residents of their money and other valuables.

It was gathered that the hoodlums used Point of Sale machines to transfer money from the accounts of some residents, who did not have cash.

They were said to have collected the Personal Identification Numbers and went away with the ATM cards of some when they could not transfer money from their victims’ accounts due to network failure.

The robbers, it was gathered, had stormed the estate about two weeks before the Sunday operation, which was said to have lasted from 11pm on Sunday to about 2am on Monday. Our correspondent gathered that about 25 families were robbed during the Sunday attack.

The armed robbers were said to have angrily destroyed properties at House 25, where they accused some of the occupants of peeping to see the way they operated during their previous visit to the estate.

It was gathered that the police were eventually alerted and the arrival of some armed policemen stopped the robbery, as the hoodlums took to their heels. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Adewale Osifeso, said the police received a distress call around 3am and deployed some of its men to the scene.

He said, “On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums fled the scene after they were thoroughly resisted. In the process, a pistol was recovered along with three cutlasses and a bag containing both male undergarments and SIM cards.”

He said efforts were on to apprehend the hoodlums.

PoliticsWike, Ex-commissioner Exchange Hot Words On TV Programme by Le124(op): 8:55am On Jun 01, 2021
The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, and his former Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, John Bazia, traded words on Monday over the recent defections between the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in the state.

Both Wike and Bazia featured on Politics Today, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, on Monday.

The ex-commissioner had not only left Wike’s cabinet, but also dumped the PDP for the APC.

The programme ended on a dramatic note when Bazia described the governor as a thug. The ex-commissioner said, “The governor, Wike, I must tell you (that) all those who are with him, they know what they are going through. But you have been seeing him on TV and the way he has been behaving in Nigeria. Sometimes, you will be baffled if that is an enlightened and educated mind; the way he carries himself. He forgets that he holds the exalted position, the office of the governor. He behaves like a thug…”

The anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, however, interjected Bazia, saying his words were weighty.

Wike was miffed when the interviewer called him to react to the ex-commissioner.He partly said, “You sit down there and somebody who said I appointed him had the temerity, the audacity to say I behave like a thug, and you are asking me that question to react to what somebody I appointed (as commissioner).

“However, let me tell you: look at him talking now. When he was commissioner, did he look that haggard? A thug appointed you commissioner; you never knew that he was a thug but he appointed you a commissioner. So, only when he removed you that you then know that he behaves like a thug. You did not resign, you were working with a thug all the while until when the thug did not bring you back as a commissioner (for a second term in 2019), you then realised that he behaves like a thug. Now, look at the kind of characters we have and these are the kinds of people that you want me to respond to: somebody who stole the ‘kola’ of traditional rulers and up till now, he has not gone to court to challenge our saying (allegation) that he stole ‘kola’ given to traditional rulers and clergymen.

“Why did he not resign when he was commissioner? When I won my second tenure, he was lobbying that I was going to bring him back, but when I appointed another commissioner, he knew that he would not come back.”

PoliticsFor Over A Year After Relocating To US, I Had Nightmares About Boko Haram – Bish by Le124(op): 2:26pm On May 23, 2021
After escaping being kidnapped in 2014 alongside over 200 pupils of Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, Joy Bishara was moved to the United States of American where she schooled on scholarship and recently graduated. In this interview with GODFREY GEORGE she speaks about how she dealt with the trauma from the experience, as well as her future plans

What was it like the day you escaped from Boko Haram terrorists?
It was very scary. My family and other families of the girls who were taken were outside the night I came back after having jumped down from the Boko Haram truck. The entire village of Chibok and the town of Wutanku were crying. Losing over 200 girls all in one night was not what anyone of them envisioned. For weeks, we spent the night in the bush or nearby farmlands instead of our homes for fear of another attack by the terrorist group. We were all in a panic mood.
Did going to the United States to study relieve you of the trauma from that experience?

It was not easy for me at all. I had nightmares which scared me, and most times, interrupted my sleep for more than a year after I moved to the US. It did not help my healing process. But I am thankful to the people in the States who supported me emotionally and gave me all the love they could offer.

What was the experience like for you moving to the United States having spent all your life in Nigeria? It was a good experience. I got to the US through the help of some Christians. A family which I would not like to name for security reasons accommodated me while I waited to get my passport and visa processed. They were so helpful. Jubilee Campaign had a huge hand in making sure that my friend, Lydia Pogu, who also escaped, and I got to the US safely. When we got to the US, other Christians who had heard our stories were always willing to help in all ways possible. A few churches donated towards our plans for a better life and other things.

What was your experience schooling in the US?
I was on a scholarship and I was also working. I had an amazing boss, who made sure the best in me manifested. On my graduation, she baked me and Lydia a cake and we were so happy and felt loved.

When you were told you were going to the US, what was your reaction?
Honestly, I said no. I told them I was not interested. The Boko Haram terrorists warned every one of us that if we wanted to be alive, we must quit school, else they would find us and kill us, no matter where we ran to. I was so scared. The voice kept echoing in my head, telling me I was going to die. But I told myself that with God by my side, no stupid voice in my head had the right to crush my dreams. I am now a university graduate despite being told in the past that I was not smart enough. The greatest revenge is success.

You studied Social Works. What informed that choice?
I chose to study Social Work because I love people and I love to work with individuals and families who are facing challenges such as abusive relationships, loss of homes due to terrorism, poverty, in their lives. My aim is to assist them get their needs met and make sure they live healthy social lives.
I love to provide resources for those who can’t defend themselves. It is especially important that those who are vulnerable are taken care of by those who are privileged or in power. No one should be abandoned or left to suffer so much just to make ends meet. I want to be someone who fights against injustice and preserve the rights of the poor.

What advice do you have for young girls going through the same things you had to go through before help came your way?

Ladies, you have the power to change the world. Giving up or doubting yourself is not an option. God created each of you for a purpose. If I had given up the night I was kidnapped, then I would not have lived to become what God had kept in store for me. Even during danger and uncertainty, God has your back and will always make a way where there seems to be no way. Don’t allow anything stand in your way. You are brave, strong, beautiful and smart. You can be whatever you wish to be.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to be the voice of the voiceless and build my own agency where I will be helping those in need such as homeless people and persecuted Christians.

PoliticsNigeria May Not Last Till 2023, Says YCE Scribe by Le124(op): 11:39am On May 23, 2021
The Secretary-General of the Yoruba Council of Elders, Dr Kunle Olajide, has said Nigeria may not last till 2023 when another round of general election will hold.

Olajide said the level of mutual suspicion among various ethnic nationalities in the country and the level of attacks against the government agencies were an indication that all was not well with Nigeria and urgent actions must be taken to bring it back from the brink.

The YCE scribe said this in an interview with SUNDAY Punch on Saturday. He said, “The attacks on police stations, Independent National Electoral Commission offices are a manifestation of general disenchantment of Nigerians. When INEC offices are being attacked, and police stations are also attacked, that is a direct attack on the state.

“It is a reflection of how bad we have descended in the last six years of this administration. It is still a manifestation of the general disenchantment of the people and something has to be done urgently otherwise, may God forbid, the country may not even last till 2023.”

Asked if what is happening now should be blamed on the present government, Olajide said his answer was “yes and no.”He said, “ They inherited a country that has been dysfunctional because if the structure and fraudulent constitution of 1999. But they promised Nigerians so much in 2014 that they were going to restructure the country to reflect true federalism and the basis of our union in 1963.
What have we found since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power? The President and his people did not say anything about restructuring until 2017. They wanted to creat an impression that they were sincere and (Governor Nasir) El-Rufai committee was constituted.

“The committee came up with a very good report but not one word has been said about that report since 2017. I think Mr President must have underrated reactions of Nigerians and this thing has gone beyond him now. This is the ninth National Assembly and they have been amending the constitution since. You can’t continue to panel beat a badly destroyed accident vehicle. We need a new constitution. The 1999 Constitution should be discarded and a process of writing a new one should be put in place.”

He said the 1999 constitution turned politics to commercial ventures when politicians go to invest and make huge returns on their investment within a short period at the expense of the citizens.

He said the new constitution should address such trend and make politics an avenue to serve the people.Commenting on the response of the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) to the ban in open grazing declared by southern governors, the YCE leader described the AGF’s response as childish and unfortunate.

He added, “The response of the Attorney General is infantile and very elementary. His response reflects the quality of people we have at the highest level in this country. That is how low this country has descended. The chief law officer of this country doesn’t realise that there is no freedom of movement for cows in our constitution. Animals are restricted to the zoos and ranches. They don’t have freedom of movement like human beings.”

PoliticsMilitary Airstrikes In Imo: Ohanaeze, IPOB Kick by Le124(op): 10:13am On May 22, 2021
Igbo socio-political group, Ohanaeze, and the Indigenous People of Biafra have kicked against the resumption of airstrikes in Imo State by security operatives.

There was panic in Imo state on Friday as security operatives resumed airstrikes in the state.

The military bombardment was reported to have been initiated against those terrorising the state.

The airstrikes, which took place in Amuzi and Odenkwume communities in the Ihitte/Uboma Local Government Area and some neighbouring communities in the Ihitte/Uboma LGA of the state caused the natives to flee their homes.

An indigene of the area said, “There is an ongoing military airstrike in Odenkwume and Amuzi communities in Obowo and their neighbouring communities in Ihitte/Uboma LGA.

“They have continued to attack the communities in search of gunmen suspected to be ESN (Eastern Security Network) members, thereby putting the people of the area in fear.

“Just a few minutes ago, I got a call from my brother and other family members to inform me of what is going on in my community. There is a heavy downpour now that a temporarily suspended airstrike continued in Odenkwume Odenkwume.”When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abutu Yaro, told Saturday PUNCH that he knew nothing about military activities.

The CP said, “I don’t know anything about military activities in the state. I only know that of the police.”

Efforts to get the comments of the spokesperson for the 34 Artillery Brigade Command, Obinze, Owerri, Babatunde Zubairu, proved abortive. Though he promised to get back to our correspondent, he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

But the spokesperson for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbenna, told our correspondent that it was against the ongoing military operations in the South-East, saying there was no peculiar reason for a concentrated military operation in the zone.According to Ogbenna, the insecurity in the South-East and the South-South zones is not different from what is happening in the North-East and other parts of the country.

He said, “There is nothing special happening in the South-East and the South-South zones that is peculiar, compared to what is happening in other parts of the country.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo has already issued a press statement on this that we are against the arrest of our youths without any justifiable reason by the military.”Also, the Indigenous People of Biafra kicked against the military airstrikes, saying the Federal Government has declared war on Biafra by resuming its military operations in the South-East.

The proscribed group stated this in a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful, which was made available to Saturday PUNCH on Friday.

The statement read in part, “Just two days ago, the Inspector General of Police, while launching a special police operation for the South-East called Operation Restore Peace, in Enugu, confirmed the people’s fears when he asked police personnel not to wait for any other special order before they start killing protesters and anyone confronting them in the zone.He specifically directed them to ensure they eliminate anybody suspected to be a Biafran agitator or IPOB member, and not to bother bringing them to police stations anymore.

“There are so many security challenges in the North where the rampaging Boko Haram terrorists and bandits have seized the control of many communities and the local government areas, yet there is no shoot-on-sight order declared by the double-faced Buhari-led Federal Government. South-East and South-South are not at war with anybody but Fulani terrorists supported by the Nigerian government brought war into our land, killing innocent people while pointing accusing fingers at IPOB members and ESN operatives.”

PoliticsKaduna Crash: Adesina Opeyemi Deeziah Prayed Against 'Bloody May' by Le124(op): 9:41am On May 22, 2021
How Kaduna Plane Crew Member Shared Prediction Of Bloody May, Called For Prayer

One of the crew members of the Beachcraft 350 aircraft that crashed at the Kaduna International Airport on Friday, Sgt Adesina Opeyemi Deeziah, died less than a month after sharing a post predicting bloody May in Nigeria and asking for prayers for the country.

Adesina and the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, as well as nine other military personnel were onboard the jet when it crashed around 6pm on Friday. The 11 souls died in the tragic incident.

The late sergeant had on April 30 shared a story “Something bad is going to happen in Nigeria in May” on his Facebook page and asked for prayers for the country.

Adesina had written, “This parable is heavy. Me and you need to pray for our country Nigeria.”The attached link is a news report quoting the General Overseer of the Champions Royal Assembly, Joshua Iginla, warning about heavy clouds on the country in May, June and July.

“Mark all I have said in parables. My spirit boils. For the past six months, God has been revealing to me some things that are hard for me to say. We need to pray for Nigeria.
“What is coming ahead in the next three months is not good, that’s May, June, and July. I can’t talk more than this. We need to pray for Nigeria,” the cleric had said.

Meanwhile, Adesina died alongside others about three weeks after his daughter’s dedication.

He and his wife of three years, Adesina Gift Funke, dedicated their five-month-old daughter to God in their family church on May 2.

Shortly after the child dedication, Adesina’s wife had shared photographs from the event on her Facebook wall with the caption, “My dashing baby dedication was a success, may ur days be long my beautiful baby.”She tagged her husband in the post that attracted over 50 congratulatory messages.

Adesina himself had announced the birth of his daughter in a December 26, 2020 post.

He wrote, “*GoodNews*. It is a girl. My Queen has finally arrived. Mom, Dad and baby are in good condition.”

The late sergeant had earlier on April 9 celebrated his birthday with his wife also taking to her Facebook wall to celebrate him.She wrote “Happy birthday to the best husband anyone could ever ask for!
“Today, I’ll be more than ready to grant any wish you have…
“I can’t imagine spending a lifetime with anyone but you. Your love always brightens my day. Happy birthday my adeori.”

On March 10, they celebrated their third wedding anniversary with him writing, “#Happy3YearsAnniversary#
Merry Anniversary to us! May we enjoy many more years of life and moments together, may we have several times of celebrations together, and may the heaven smile on us as we celebrate our love today.”
His friends and colleagues have since taken to his Facebook wall to mourn him.

While condoling the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, the Military and the Nigerian Army in particular as well as his immediate family and Nigeria in general he described late General Attahiru as a gallant, dogged, disciplined and dedicated senior officer who died in the line of duty to his fatherland.

He described his emergence as Army boss at such a critical time in the nation’s efforts at surmounting her internal security challenges as symbolically strategic but impactfully short-lived in the anals of the service.

PoliticsLooters’ List: Court Orders Lai Mohammed, FG To Pay Secondus ₦20 Million by Le124(op): 2:15am On May 22, 2021
A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has entered judgment against the Federal Government and the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a defamation suit filed against them by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus.

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra, in a judgment delivered during a virtual court sitting on Thursday, said Secondus successfully proved his case that the defendants jointly and severally defamed him by publishing his name on the looters’ list in 2018.It would be recalled that the Minister of Information and Culture had in March 2018 published a list of some Nigerians he claimed looted the country’s treasury and named Secondus as one of such looters.

In protest, Secondus, through a pre-action letter by his lawyer, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), demanded the retraction of the publication as well as a payment of N1.5bn damages to him within 72 hours, failing which he threatened to go to court.

He later filed a libel suit marked PHC/1013/2018 against Mohammed and the Federal Government, urging the court to declare that the respondents defamed him by putting his name on the looters’ list.

The court on Thursday entered judgment in Secondus’ favour and awarded N20m in damages against the defendants.

The judge said, “The claimant’s case succeeds and the defendants are jointly and severally liable for the libelous publication made against the claimant.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants shall publish a written apology in favour of the claimant in the newspaper of the 3rd defendant.”

The judge made “an order of injunction restraining the defendants whether by themselves, agents or privies from further publishing defamatory statements against the claimant.”

The judge added, “The defendants shall pay the sum of N20m to the claimant as damages.”

PoliticsYou Can’t Defeat Boko Haram By Sitting In Aso Rock, Soyinka Tells Buhari by Le124(op): 10:51am On Jan 10, 2021
Kayode Oyero

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called for a national mobilisation to combat the menace of insecurity bedeviling the country.

He also said Nigeria’s sovereignty had been taken away by Boko Haram terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.

In a direct reference to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the Nobel laureate said the President could not end the insecurity challenge in the country, sitting down in Aso Rock.

Soyinka stated this on Saturday while featuring on an Arise TV programme monitored by Sunday PUNCH.

According to him, Nigeria has reached the “stage of desperation” and the government should be willing to “pay people to come and help us” in defence against Boko Haram insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements.

Soyinka said, “There are those on whose shoulders must be placed the primary responsibility and that include some former Heads of State who refused to see the inevitability of what we are going through right now.

“I am very glad that the northern elite are now speaking up, boldly and practically, (and are also) now taking measures which they should have taken years ago. They’ve moved beyond the unbelievable policies of actually paying killers to stop killing. I don’t want to mention names but some of them admitted that they were paying protection money to killers instead of dealing with that cancer in the only way which they should which, is excision, to take out killers instead of giving them money.

“You don’t appease evil and we are dealing with evil; there is no other word, we are dealing with the proliferation, the enthronement of evil in the society. And unfortunately, we have encouraged its manifestation, its proliferation, its entrenchment.

So, let them get away with the issue of sovereignty. If they have to pay people to come and help us, then call them whatever you want. Please go ahead because we’ve reached that stage of desperation.
“But I will prefer a general mobilisation in which people are trained, farmers especially are trained to work with the hoe in one hand and the gun in the other hand, ready to protect their lives, their harvests and the rest of us.
We are not unique, history is full of those situations. I will like to see a national mobilisation. Let’s be practical.”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that at least 43 rice farmers were beheaded by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State last November.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, had consequently urged the Federal Government to engage mercenaries and the militaries of neighbouring countries, like Chad and Cameroon, to crush the over decade old Boko Haram insurgency.

Soyinka added, “From a self-protective point of view, it is a common problem; it is a national, collective issue. Don’t just sit there and think that you can solve it from Aso Rock,; no. This now concerns even the lowest common citizens in this nation because that lowest, that most impotent individual has become a prime target. So, it’s a collective issue. I’m not surprised some governors now say let us reach outside help; it’s something I have said also. I don’t say mercenaries necessarily, but this has gone beyond a Nigerian problem.

“Instead of that, what do I hear? Somebody gets on the podium and say, ‘The sovereignty of this nation cannot be challenged. Please, don’t let us hear any more of that rubbish. The sovereignty of this nation is in the hands of the murdering herdsmen. The sovereignty of this nation has already been taken over by Boko Haram, it’s been taken over by ISWAP, it’s been taken over by those with absolutely no respect for what is called national integrity.”
Soyinka also said Buhari’s nepotistic tendencies were outrageous, adding that the President appointed wrong people into the wrong places.

Soyinka’s statement comes two weeks after the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Kukah, also accused the President of nepotism.

‘Amotekun must not become another SARS’
Meanwhile, Soyinka also warned that the Western Nigeria Security Network, otherwise known as Amotekun, must not transform into another form of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
The writer said Amotekun operatives must be trained in ethics so they would not end on the wrong side of history.
Soyinka said, “Community policing, like Amotekun, is a recognition of the fact that the civic part of the entire national polity has got to wake up in not just its own defence but also survival.

“I have told them that anytime they want us to come and assist; we will come even if it is just on the ethical session so that as you are training them to defend us, we are also training their minds so that Amotekun does not become another SARS – very important. We must do everything together.

“It is about time the public examined itself; what are we made up of? Are there those among us who, if they got into power, will behave exactly as those kinds of agencies which we are repudiating and against which we are protesting? There is absolutely no excuse for the brutality that occurred in the wake of the noise, rumour or reality of people being shot at the Lekki tollgate.”

RomanceSex Without Consent In Marriage Is Rape –halima Abubakar by Le124(op): 6:50am On Jan 09, 2021
Mobola Sadiq

Actress, Halima Abubakar, is of the opinion that a man should never have sex with his partner without her consent.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, she said, “There have been reports that some homes broke up because of sex but I am sorry to say this, some people are limited in their sexual expression because of religion. Some women just lie down there (during sex) because they are scared of expressing themselves. But, men can encourage their women to be more expressive, without using abusive languages.

“Also, if the woman is not in the mood, her wishes should be respected. There are other things, aside from sex, that a man should concern himself with. I consider it a turn off for a man to like sex too much. I feel some men are insatiable (sexually). Some people have said that when one is legally married, there is nothing like rape. But, I don’t agree with that. Any sex that is not consensual is rape. The woman could even get injured in the process. Would we still call that pleasure? One’s husband should not forcefully have sex with one. I am not saying a man should not have sex, but he should control his appetite for it so that it doesn’t lead to his destruction. I feel the wife can report this kind of case if she cannot talk to the husband, but should go to the family first. If he does not change, then she should take it to the authorities.”

Abubakar also advocated for castration as the ideal punishment for rapists. She added, “Any rapist caught should be castrated because rape is a pandemic just like COVID-19. Many people do not seem to know the extent to which rape damages victims psychologically. People have to take responsibility for their behaviours. I know a lady that eventually died after being raped. She went through hell. I also know a man who tried something with a neighbour’s child but thankfully, he did not succeed. Because of that, I don’t talk to him till date. Rapists should be castrated. When it is done to some of them, others will learn how to control themselves or get married.”

SportsI’ll Knock Joshua Out Within Two Rounds, Says Fury by Le124(op): 4:56pm On Jan 04, 2021
Tyson Fury said on Monday he can knock out fellow British world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua inside two rounds due to his recent form.

WBC belt holder Fury said following Joshua’s past two bouts — a unanimous points decision over Andy Ruiz Junior in December 2019 and a ninth-round stoppage of Kubrat Pulev last month — the fight would be a no contest.

Fury gained a unanimous points decision over Swede Otto Wallin in September 2019 before an impressive seventh-round knock-out to take the WBC title off Deontay Wilder last February.

“I don’t believe he’s (Joshua) as good as people crack him up to be, or he doesn’t believe he is in his own self,” Fury told Sky Sports.

“He’s got a confidence issue. He’s coming off two shaky performances and boxing is all about who is in form and who isn’t. In his last two fights, he’s not in form.

“On mine, I am, so momentum is with me and I just believe take him out early, very early, maybe even one round or two rounds.”

Fury is optimistic about the fight, which would be one of the biggest in British boxing history, will take place as soon as possible.

Potential hurdles in the way of the super-fight include Joshua’s WBO mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk and another possible meeting between Fury and Wilder.

– ‘One-on-one combat’ –

Fury, 32, said now was the time for Joshua to back up his words by finally fighting him.

“Whenever the world gets back to normal, whatever normal may consist of after this pandemic, then that’s when this fight is going to happen,” he said.

This fight has been brewing for a long time. They’ve been avoiding me for a long time and now it’s finally got to happen.

“They either run away from the fight and announce it publicly or they take the fight. Either way, it’s a lose-lose situation for him.”

Fury believes there is an imperative for the fight to happen sooner rather than later, comparing the bout to the one between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao that finally took place in 2015.

Mayweather won it on a unanimous decision.

“Boxing is one of those sports where rarely do you see the best fight the best,” said Fury.

“It’s always the champion picks his opponents and you never get the two top guys fighting each other.

“We saw the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, we were waiting for that fight for 10 years. When it finally happened, I believe Pacquiao was past his best. It maybe should have happened four or five years earlier.

“So hopefully we get to go one-on-one combat with not only the two best heavyweights out there but two heavyweights who are in their prime and not past it.”

PoliticsNorthern Coalition Plans To Sue Buhari Over Service Chiefs’ Tenure by Le124(op): 8:07am On Jan 04, 2021
Godwin Isenyo, Kaduna

THE Coalition of Northern Groups says it’s dragging the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to court over the continued retention of the nation’s service chiefs.

On assumption of office in 2015, the President appointed General Gabriel Olonishakin as Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff, Air Marshall Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff and Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as Chief of Naval Staff.

There have been calls for their removal for non-performance, but spokesman for the President, Mr. Garba Shehu, had consistently argued that only Buhari could hire and fire the service chiefs.

However, the CNG disagreed, saying that the service chiefs have overstayed.

The coalition added that under them, the security situation in the North had worsened, hence the need for the court to compel Buhari to remove them (service chiefs).

The CNG argued that there were laws guiding the appointments of the service chiefs, which must be followed to evolve the system.

This, the northern organisation said, would be explored when they get to the court.

CNG’s spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, stated these in an exclusive chat with The PUNCH in Kaduna.

Suleiman said, “The CNG is going to court because we believe it is now no longer a question of performance, but one of legality on whether the service chiefs, who have overstayed their years of service should not be compelled to comply with the laws guiding the prevailing scheme of service in the country.

“We would seek interpretation from the courts on the applicability of the law that says if a public servant attains 60 years of age, he must retire, or if he covers 35-years in service, he should go.

On moral grounds, CNG regrets that by any standard of judgement, President Muhammadu Buhari and his security chiefs as constituted today have failed the nation in the vital area of improving its security.

“We at the CNG have been consistent with our warnings that President Buhari lacked the will, his overstayed service chiefs lack the capacity, competence and commitment to lead Nigeria into a secure and prosperous future.

“It is shocking that in spite of unprecedented consensus among Nigerians that the administration requires a new resolve, approach and leadership in the fight against the nation’s multiple security challenges, President Buhari appears either totally isolated or in deep denial over the result of his service chiefs’ failures to secure Nigerians.”

PoliticsPolice Council May Nominate New IGP February by Le124(op): 1:49pm On Jan 03, 2021
ADELANI ADEPEGBA

There are indications that the Nigerian Police Council may nominate a new Inspector-General of Police by February.

It is unclear if the current Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, will get a tenure extension but unconfirmed sources said his successor may be announced.

The council, which is chaired by the President, comprises the 36 state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

Adamu, who is the 20th indigenous police boss, is expected to retire next month when he would clock 35 years in service.

Sources said he had launched a vigorous lobby for tenure extension to enable him to conclude certain reforms in the police but it is still unclear if his bid to secure an extension additional was successful.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had recently extended the tenure of the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, and the Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Muhammadu Gana.

Buhari has been under fire for extending the tenure of the Chiefs of Defence Staff, Army Staff, Naval Staff and Air Force.

It was gathered that the race for the IGP’s successor has begun with some state governors, influential politicians and traditional rulers rooting for their candidates.
A senior official said intense lobby for the new IG has commenced with various interest groups pushing the candidacy of their protégés.

A handful out of about 20 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police are eligible for appointment as the next IG, Sunday PUNCH gathered on Saturday.

A source stated, “The police council always meets confidentially to decide the next IG but a lot of people are already pushing for their candidates; the pressure is high but it is the President’s prerogative to select the IG.

We have about 20 AIGs but most of them do not qualify under the new Police Act, which stipulates that a candidate for the office of the IG must have at least five years of service.

“We know that AIG Moses Jitiboh (former Chief Personal Security Officer to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan) still has over five years but they are trying to spoil his chances. Apart from him, about four other AIGs from the North also have good chances of being appointed.”

The source disclosed that the IG recently nominated Jitiboh for promotion to DIG in a move to bypass the most eligible AIG who was said to be sick.

When asked about the race for the police top office, the Commissioner representing the media on the PSC board, Mr Austin Braimoh, said the commission was not involved in the appointment of the IG, noting that this remained the prerogative of the police council.

HealthCOVID-19: Over 4,000 Lagosians Undergoing Home Treatment Amid Deadly Second Wave by Le124(op): 8:12am On Jan 02, 2021
. We’re not responsible for low testing, six states tell FG
. Doubts, violation of safety protocols worsening infections –NMA
Our Reporters

At least 4,176 persons infected with coronavirus in Lagos State are currently undergoing home-based treatment in the wake of the second wave infections across Nigeria, and the world at large.
The state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, disclosed the figures on Friday via his Twitter handle, @ProfAkinAbayomi, noting that 115 cases were in isolation.

Abayomi wrote, “Total number of #COVID19 recovery in communities – 22,789; cases currently under isolation – 115; active cases under home-based care – 4,176; new #COVID19 related death – 3; total deaths – 240.”
He put the number of COVID-19 cases discharged from Lagos care centres at 2,901 while three new coronavirus-related deaths were recorded, bringing the total COVID-19 induced fatalities in the state to 240.
The commissioner also identified five top high burden local government areas in the state with COVID-19 cases as Eti-Osa, Ajeromi, Surulere, Amuwo-Odofin and Mushin.

He appealed to people to stay safe, avoid crowded places and celebrate responsibly, warning that those who have no reason to move around should stay at home.

In his earlier tweet on December 30, 2020, Abayomi said COVID-19 infections in Lagos were 30,221.
We’re not responsible for low testing, five states tell FG
Meanwhile, some state governments have shot back at the Federal. saying they are not responsible for low COVID-19 testing in their states.
The states are Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Zamfara, and Osun.

Some of the state governments outright debunked that they were not conducting enough tests, while others like Anambra blamed the low testing on religious leaders who make their followers believe that the coronavirus was a farce.
The Federal Government had on Tuesday complained that despite the resources available to states, the test they were conducting was still low.
The NCDC, in its statistics released last Sunday, listed eight states and the Federal Capital Territory with the high number of tests.

They are the Federal Capital Territory with 119,843 tests; Rivers, 84,553; Kano, 61,768; Ogun, 44,398; Plateau, 43,063; Kaduna, 39,642; Oyo, 30,579; Gombe, 28,806; and Delta, 23,116.
The states with low tests conducted, according to the NCDC, are Kogi, 451; Zamfara, 1,211; Cross River, 2,166; Kebbi, 2,766; Jigawa, 3,273; Anambra, 3,395; Akwa Ibom, 4,143; Adamawa, 4,649; Yobe, 4,277; and Osun, 6,379.

Abayomi had on Monday said the state had conducted 236,212 tests, the highest in the country.
On Thursday, fresh 1,031 COVID-19 cases were recorded by the NCDC, shooting the number of cases in the country to 87,510.
Amidst the growing concerns over the second wave of the pandemic and low testing, some state governments, in separate interviews with our correspondents, have explained why they are not responsible for the situation.
For instance, the Cross River State Government said the state’s reference laboratory which was vandalised and looted during the #EndSARS protest in October 2020 had yet to be rehabilitated.
The state, therefore, called on the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to rehabilitate the lab.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, told Saturday PUNCH that the reference lab had yet to be rebuilt months after it was vandalised, adding that the state government had taken steps to notify the NCDC Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, and the PTF about the urgency of the matter but to no avail.
She said, “The reference lab was vandalised and looted during the #EndSARS protest in October. I have gone to Abuja to meet with the NCDC boss. We have written and sent applications to the chairman of PTF (Boss Mustapha).
“The governor has even discussed it with senior authorities and we have yet to get an urgent response from the government which should be interested in testing at this point, knowing that we are coming into the second wave of COVID-19, which might be stronger than the first wave.
“The PTF, at this point, should be interested in ensuring that every single public lab in Nigeria is up-and-running at maximum speed. If possible, expand the lab so that they can test more people. But this is three months going (sic). Every other day, I send emails to Chikwe and we have been trying to reach out to them so that they can get our lab back so that we can continue massive screening and testing.”
Edu further said only the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital had been carrying out tests in the last two months for severe cases brought to its isolation centre, as against the idea of community testing and collection of samples, due to the condition of the state reference lab.

She said, “This is what the PTF should place as a priority at this point in time. They (testing centres) are things that should take two or three weeks to set up. This is a matter of national emergency that should be addressed almost immediately. But it is taking so long for them to do it.
“So, for me, really, they (PTF) should pay less attention to numbers and more attention to getting the job done. They should fix the lab and let there be massive testing across the country.”Giving its reasons for low testing in Anambra State, the government blamed some clerics, doctors and some Indigenous People of Biafra.
The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, said IPOB and the clerics had told the people that COVID-19 was a hoax.
Adinuba also attributed the low testing to the activities of some medical doctors in the state who he said treated some patients in their private hospitals, thereby reducing the number of tests being carried out at government facilities.Stating that there was no Federal Government-owned COVID-19 laboratory in the state, Adinuba said the state had three testing centres.
He said the state had about 500-capacity isolation facilities across the state, adding, that the state government had adopted home treatment for COVID-19 patients for convenience.
He said as of press time, no COVID-19 patient was in any isolation centre in the state.Adinuba said, “We don’t have any COVID-19 laboratory in Anambra State that belongs to the Federal Government.
“We have three, one in Nnewi, run in partnership with the state government; one owned by the state government at Onitsha General Hospital; then one, which is the biggest, at the state university teaching hospital.
“But of late, our people have not been going for testing because of reasons like indoctrination by IPOB, and the clerics telling [people] that COVID-19 is not real. Also, our doctors treat COVID-19 patients in their private hospitals.”
Also citing its reason for low testing, Zamfara State Government said it had no testing facility in the state.
Due to this, the state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Yahaya Kanoma, said the state used to send blood samples of suspected cases to Abuja. We have no test centres in the state. But what we do is that we take blood samples to Abuja,” he said.

Kanoma added that the 112 cases recorded in the state by the NCDC were the results of blood samples sent to Abuja several months ago, saying, “We have no COVID-19 case at the moment.”
Also reacting to the claim by the NCDC regarding low testing, the Special Adviser to the Osun State Governor on Public Health, Dr ‘Siju Olamiju, said the state had been conducting tests and working on preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus.
Olamiju said between Monday, December 28, and Thursday, December 31, the state took 68 samples, out of which 10 returned positive for COVID-19.
He said, “There is always room for improvement, but to say we are not conducting enough test is not correct. We presently have one patient in our isolation centre.
“As of today, we have two labs functioning and recognised by the NCDC – the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics and Infectious Disease at Redeemer’s University, Ede, and Osun State University Molecular Lab.”
On its part, Akwa Ibom State government said it was shocked at the NCDC report which listed it among the states with low number of COVID-19 tests.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, said the state had even gone a step further by conducting community testing for suspected patients.
“That information is strange to us because we have PCR [Polymerase Chain Reaction] labs here and we are into community testing, so I don’t know why Akwa Ibom State should be listed among the states with low tests.
“We conduct tests based on the NCDC protocols and we have gone into community testing. That is why we tested corps members who were posted to the state and some of them were positive. The state epidemiologist is up and doing with community (testing),” Ememobong said.Nigerians’ nonchalant attitude responsible for second wave –Lagos NMA
Meanwhile, the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has lamented the nonchalant attitude of Nigerians, saying it is responsible for the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chairman of the Lagos NMA, Dr Adetunji Adenekan, said this on Friday in a statement, titled, ‘Reflecting on the lesson of (the outgone) year 2020.’
Adenekan also stressed the need for a high index of suspicion among health care professionals.
He said, “We must state, with the utmost sense of responsibility, that the carefree or nonchalant attitude of the Nigerian public towards the COVID-19 protocols is largely responsible for the second wave of the pandemic. In an interview with The PUNCH live-streamed on Facebook on Wednesday, a virologist, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, stated that there was mutation in the structure of COVID-19 with a new strain that spreads faster now found in Nigeria.
He said the strain might lead to more infections and deaths if people failed to observe the necessary safety measures.
Tomori said, “The latest I have read this morning (Wednesday) is that it seems to affect younger people a little more than before. This is an evolving thing and people are learning about it every day. So we have to keep our eyes open. It is difficult to predict (that it will lead to more deaths) but because it spreads faster and in an environment where people are not taking proper preventive measures, it means more people will get it.
“How you react to it depends on individuals so it may lead to more deaths. The chances are that if the virus is affecting more people, we are likely to have more people dying.”

Foreign AffairsTrump Extends Suspension Of Work Visas, Green Cards by Le124(op): 10:28am On Jan 01, 2021
US President Donald Trump on Thursday issued a proclamation extending the suspension of issuance of work visas and green cards.

Trump imposed the measures in April and June to protect job opportunities for American workers amid a rise in unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proclamation came hours before the president’s executive order on the immigration restrictions was set to expire.

The order will now expire at the end of March, extending into the first term in office of President-elect Joe Biden, who has vowed to reverse Trump’s immigration policies.

The proclamation said allowing immigrant workers into the country would “pose a risk of displacing and disadvantaging US workers during the economic recovery following the COVID-19 outbreak”.

“The effects of COVID-19 on the United States labour market and on the health of American communities is a matter of ongoing national concern.

“And the considerations present in Proclamations 10014 and 10052 have not been eliminated,” Trump wrote in the proclamation.

The president first imposed the restrictions on the issuance of green cards for immigrants in April and expanded it in June to limit several other work visas.

They include new H-1B tech worker visas, H-2B seasonal worker visas, certain J work and education exchange visitor visas and L executive transfer visas.

The proclamation said the recent surge in COVID-19 cases had surpassed previous highs in June.

This, in addition to the implementation of pandemic-related restrictions, has placed further strain on US businesses, it said.

“The effect of recently approved vaccines and other treatments has not yet been fully realised for the US labour market.

“While the November overall unemployment rate in the United States of 6.7 per cent reflects a marked decline from its April high, there were still 9,834,000 fewer seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in November than in February of 2020,” the proclamation added.

The order applies only to foreigners who are currently outside the US and do not yet have permission to enter.

Those who already have permanent residency are not affected, and there are exceptions for certain people, including spouses and children of US citizens.

PoliticsEkiti Senator Rejects Voting Rights For Married Underage Girls by Le124(op): 11:41am On Dec 30, 2020
Sunday Aborisade, Abuja

The Senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, Biodun Olujimi, has vowed to reject any proposal seeking voting powers for underage married girls should it come up for debate in the Senate.

Olujimi, a former Senate Minority Leader, stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The Senator alleged that promoters of such a proposal were looking for ‘a smart way’ of legalising child marriage and capture their victims in the electoral system to gain undue advantage over other regions.

SUNDAY PUNCH had in an exclusive report last week, exposed a proposal by members of the National Assembly to push through an amendment to the Electoral Act to enable underaged wives vote during elections.

Chairman, Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, Senator Kabiru Gaya, and his counterpart in the House of representatives, Aisha Dukku, presented the proposal to a Technical Committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Some estimates put the number of child brides in homes in northern Nigeria at about 40 million.

But Olujimi said, “The idea of capturing underage married girls in our electoral system by recognising them as voters doesn’t make sense.

“Only the adult, as defined by the Nigerian constitution should be eligible to vote. Why should we be proposing a law that would suddenly turn our young children to adults?

The first thing to attack is the issue of child marriage. We should have a minimum. There has to be a standard to qualify a lady to be either an adult or eligible voter and our constitution has clarified that already.

“We must stick to our voting age. The proposal is a smart way of bringing a huge chunk of people into the voting system. That is not right, it is not correct.

“Whoever that is married to an underage lady should be patient until such a girl turns 18 before, she should be allowed to vote. This may even prevent those marrying underage girls from further defiling our children.

“When the matter is brought to the floor of the Senate, we will surely be there to attack and reject it because I will not sit down and watch my 14-year-old granddaughter, turned into an adult all of a sudden because you want to commit electoral fraud.”

PoliticsBuhari’s Impeachment: More PDP Reps Tackle House Leadership Over Sanction Threat by Le124(op): 2:41pm On Dec 26, 2020
Leke Baiyewu, Abuja
More members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the House of Representatives have faulted the threat by the leadership of the House to sanction the leader of the PDP caucus, Mr Kingsley Chinda, over his call for the impeachment of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Chinda had urged Nigerians to prevail on the National Assembly to begin the impeachment process against Buhari over the killing of 43 rice farmers in Borno State by Boko Haram and the abduction of over 340 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State.

But the Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, had in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Monday, threatened Chinda with sanctions by the House if the PDP leader continued to call for Buhari’s impeachment.

A member from Rivers State, Mr Awaji-Inombek Abiante, in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, however, stated that Chinda had not committed any offence by speaking for his constituents and other Nigerians as their representative.

Abiante dismissed the threat as “a lack of understanding of the responsibilities of a legislative arm of government,” adding that it exposed the “lack of depth.”

Responding to a question on whether members of the PDP caucus were out to defend Chinda, Abiante said, “Does the House have the power to send a member elected by the people of a constituency out of legislative functions? The answer is no. If in the past, people have been so barred, my people elected me to be in the House and I speak on their behalf. Nobody has the right to take me out.”

Chinda had, in his reaction to Ado-Doguwa’s threat, said he was ready to face the consequence of the impeachment calls. “I’m prepared,” he had told our correspondent.

The PDP leader had added in part, “You should ask if it would be fair to Nigerians. I speak for Nigerians. They should ask Nigerians to stop the call for the removal of President. I have the backing of the majority of Nigerians.”

Another PDP member, Farah Dagogo, representing Degema /Bonny Federal Constituency in Rivers State, had also chided Ado-Doguwa for “playing to the gallery.”
Dagogo said the Majority Leader, who was also a legislator in the defunct Third Republic, “ought to be experienced enough to know that Kingsley Chinda did not commit any legislative infraction with his patriotic call.”

The lawmaker described the alleged claim by Ado-Doguwa that the President failed to honour the invitation of the House because of Chinda as “not only ludicrous but has only exposed the leadership of the House to hypocrisy.”

Also, a prominent member of the PDP caucus, Mr Tajudeen Yusuf, had dismissed Ado-Doguwa’s threat as “part of the sycophancy that is killing Nigerian democracy,” adding that the “wishful thinking antagonises the rising concern of Nigeria citizens.”

According to Yusuf, some All Progressives Congress bigwigs’ “nasty” sycophancy is “one of Nigeria’s biggest silent problems and their unending, unthinking and non-critical ‘yes sir’ syndrome is a silent killer of democratic ethos.”
