Videos for introduction, and then documentation afterwards.

One of the advantages of documentations is the detailed information that let you know the reasons you are doing things you're doing, though it can be time consuming. The visuals illustration of video tutorials is also another good feelings of video tutorials

I still watched Django tutorials today and also read its documentations. I am still trying to see the one that is most effective for learning.

If I may ask, which one do you prefer?

I have always been on the look out to see your diary on your IT journey. qtguru diary is inspiring and motivating. I read a line of qtguru diary where you guys met at the gym centre. How is everything?

To the extent that if-else statements are no longer confusing.

Well done.

Okay.

I think you should go further to cover Function and Object before starting react at least.

You'll get more confused if you use John Smilga running your React for the first time.

There is a short video on youtube of about 11 minutes you can watch to create your first React app. Also make sure you got Node.js installed before installing React. Very smooth trust me.

Use PedroTech or Arcade Mind to soften the ground before John Smilga. Though I'm learning with John Smilga now, the confusion I'm experiencing can easily be bypassed because the aforementioned helped me.

Don't bother about Vite for now to avoid confusion. Learn the (normal) basic - create-react-app.

Thanks.

Thanks for the input.

How far have you gone on JavaScript?
Programming / Re: The Journey by learning22: 1:01pm On Apr 24, 2023
Anonymous6o6:

I suggest you use Vite to create react application, it is quite fast and simple. Let me explain the process:
- start by typing this on your terminal
npm create vite@latest
- press enter and it will show a pop up for the project name. You can either rename it or press enter to leave the default name.
- After which you will be given options to pick a framework, pick React and press enter
- Next, you will be required to pick a variant btw Typescript or JavaScript. Pick JavaScript and press enter
- Then you will be prompted to run three commands:
- cd project-name
- npm install
- npm run dev

This will run your app on the browser and you can start building your react application.

Thanks.
I will do that.

I just checked the tutorial you mentioned by John. I am currently working with it, although he said he will use vite as he proceeds, currently I am still at the stage he is using create-react-app.

Thanks.

They are a couple of Youtubers I follow. Honestly, I don't hold a strong opinion for paid courses because you can get great courses on YouTube depending on who you follow. Here are the ones I follow:
- Code Evolution: His react courses are broken into short videos which makes it easier for you to follow. And he also covers Typescript and Redux but the course was recorded 4years ago and the playlist has over 100+ short videos.

- Netninja: Theirs is also a playlist consisting of 38 videos or so. But it was recorded 2 years ago.

- freecodecamp: There's this react course I downloaded. It is over 14hrs long but it was recorded few weeks ago so you can find all the latest update there. The course is being taught by John Smilga and it is very comprehensible.

Thanks for the response. It is nice hearing some of this guy's from you.

I have the full course of that Codevolution downloaded some months back, although I have not been using it at the moment.

On Netninja, the guy is super good for me, that's why I have been following his playlists. His CSS and CSStailwind and modern JavaScript courses really help me a lot. I wanted to start this React course last week, but it was unfortunate I could not create the react application with the normal way of using "create-react-app". I thinking react is moving away from that. Reason I picked his next.js which is a framework of react. I still discovered that some things have to been learned in that react. I tried to work on it yesterday but I couldn't create it. So how are you creating react app now that the create-react-app that is popular isn't working anymore.

Okay, I will check that of the Freecodecamp, I have been using Freecodecamp tutorials mostly taught by Dave Gray but I think this guy isn't simplifying things enough, although the guy is good, I am happy he's not the one that taught this latest one you are talking about. I'll check it out.

Thanks and Well-done Anonymous.

It is you and your ancestors that are not normal tongue

I didn't conclude that you are not normal, I was only asking you if you are normal or not so as for you to reply in simple answer with either yes or no. Rather, you took it personally as if I said that you are not normal which I didn't. Anyways, your response helped me with the right answer I needed.

You can visit any psychiatric/rehabilitation center close to you. By God's grace you'll get the needed help to solve your abnormalities problems/challenges as the case may be.

Dear programmers on nairaland,so i am thinking of getting a hp 250 G6 with a 1000 HDD,4gb ram .then later on i found out that Android studio requires a high spec system to be able to run the system smoothly without any girdles .
Then i also saw another HP 250 G6 with 8gb ram,256 SSD,the thing is that the disk space of this system is very little ,but i know SSD are also very fast .
The problem now is tha,t i will be entering 100 level this year, you know i am going to be storing a lot of files on my system due to school work,
Please between the two, which should i go for .

The thing is.. Growing up, I always wanted to be a geek but dad wanted something else. He wanted me to become a medical doctor…

Unfortunately , I go admitted into Microbiology. You won’t believe I used to admire my guys in computer science and just go through their text books once once .. cheesy

Once I opened my Microbiology text books and saw those crappy bacteria and virus , all my body will start itching me..

I just could not read or study, going to the lab was a major turn off for me. Like it was mad ..

I just said this is not for me, I will manage and complete it, though very frustrating expecially seeing your life being ruined by parent.

I forgave him in 2012, because as I grew older I realized he wanted the best for me but in a wrong way.

So basically in the midst of suicidal thought, I started attending a Church when my life was done with. Not a deliverance ministry cheesy but a word-activated ministry where my mind was opened. My pastor said one thing that I will never forget ,” if you fail, take responsibility. Don’t blame people for your failure , otherwise you will always be miserable”

That was the quote that change my life forever. I felt the Pastor was just talking to me. I needed to make moves, and because of my moral upbringing , fraud or yahoo was not an option for me.

So I started life again , learned web design , learned graphics , learned small bit of programming before running away ..

Started blogging , started earning , then moved to e-commerce and all that..

It’s been a long journey and I won’t lie that it was easy. There were ups and down , but you know what? There is no witch that can stop a determined person.

At the end of the day, it’s not your certificate that makes you less. Nobody can actually make you inferior without your permission.

Good evening.

Please can we discuss?
Thanks

Sincerely, when I started going through the thread created by alchemeyofcodes something in me was connecting the thread with the manoftheyear's thread due to ways they both write. I was even telling myself that alchemyofcodes got some of his motivations from the thread by manoftheyear

I got confused when I read the same comment you mentioned by alchemyofcodes under the thread by manoftheyear.

Anyway, since you are just connecting dots, he deserves benefit of doubt to an extent. Coincidence happens. At the same time your thoughts can't be outrightly ruled out.

You should be a part FBI I think grin

@ OP, I am currently on a Full-Stack dev program now and I am same age as your bro. It requires serious discipline, (you might find it hard to mix it with something else) but it's free. My school is Alx. Search for Alx SE to apply. There are other courses there as well.

Which of the cohort will you belong?

@Anonymous6o6 and others.

Please I need your help on this.

It happened that I applied for ALX Africa program in which my cohort was to start in the month of June.

I have done all the preliminary tasks needed to onboard for the program. But unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, I could not start the program on that day.

I just got a login to my email now to discover several messages by ALX. I really know that I have missed a lot and I doubt I can meet up with all the assignment if I'm to start now owing to the deadline of each task.

I learnt a cohort will be onboarding by August, Is there any thing that can be done for me to be a part do this cohort?

Programming / The Decision Point To Switch Career To Tech And The Second Thought by learning22: 1:56am On May 14, 2022
About two months ago, the curiosity in me to switch careers from what I studied in the University to Tech was awoken after searching for a job for over five years of graduation with nothing tangible to show for it apart from all these demeaning jobs around in Nigeria.

I wouldn't say I know nothing about programming because I borrowed some programming courses in the University back then from the Computer Science department, where python, which is one of the languages being talked about now happens to be one of them. But the truth of the matter is that I only read those courses to pass, and not to understand, let alone apply it to any real life situation.

That's to inform my readers that at least I am not ignorant to programming languages. Note: I said programming languages and not programming.

Maybe I should conclude that the programming courses I did then exposed my knowledge to something called programming languages.

By counting, this year will make it 10 years of doing those programming courses and I have practically forgotten everything I did then.

The only thing I can remember now is that there is something called programming languages which are used in the world of technology to solve problems. But when it comes to how to use it to solve the problem, I really don't have any idea.

Fast forward to the two months I mentioned at the early part of my write-up. After reading threads here on nairaland I could practically tell you that I have finished even threads having more than 125 pages on the programming section.

This has given me a little eye opener on programming and its application and many latest programming languages and the opportunity in it if chosen as a career path.

That being said, I have made the determination to switch from what I read to have a career in tech and to take it full time.

My concern now is that I don't really trust myself in self learning, that is to say I am not sure I will be effective at self learning as so many people here did successfully, as I wouldn't want the boredom of taking too much time to get things right be a discouragement. This is due to our individual difference when it comes to learning. But I am very sure that I can perform brilliantly if I will be training in any training institute.

The challenge now is that I have read about some nairalanders here condemning those training institutes with the claims that they don't train effectively saying they are just after the trainees money.

This is giving me a huge concern, because I have research on some training institutes online with most of them located in Lagos.

Some of them are Decagon and Univercity which are the ones I may finally opt for after seeking advice from you guys at the same time looking at some things from my side too in order to make the final decision.

One of the institutes I mentioned above charges 1m while the other charges close to 3.3m.

The money may not be the problem, but the problem lies in the value of service they render if it is worth paying those amounts for.

Decagon promises to get students jobs on graduation, I wouldn't know how true this is, part of what makes me to create this thread.

In the course of researching, I came across ALX Africa, I applied and the application was successfully, class to begin online by next month.

They also said they help their graduates secure jobs on graduation.
But my challenges are the following

Power/Electricity: No explanation on this for fellow Nigerians

Time: As one has to be able to make 70 hours per week for the classes according to them. Implying that one will have to be online at least 10hours per day for 12 months for classes which I'm not seeing as 90% practicable here in this part of the world.

Ability to self train.

So, please should I forgo the institutes for the ALX Africa which is starting by next month and try to make everything work or I should prioritize the institutes.

Decagon promises to accommodate students, feed students, give students training materials, laptops inclusive and help to secure a job after graduation.

Please elder in this house kindly give your lucid advice
