Celebrities‘game Of Thrones’ Actor Neil Fingleton Dies Aged 36 by LegendVibes(op): 6:59am On Feb 27, 2017
Game Of Thrones actor Neil Fingleton has died at age 36.
The actor played the character of giant Mag The Mighty in the HBO series. The cause of death has been reported as heart failure, according to Chronicle Live.
The British-born Fingleton was named the tallest man in the UK in 2007 with his height being measured at seven feet and seven inches.
Speaking to a local paper to his home county of Durham in 2007, Fingleton said of his height: “I do cause a bit of a stir wherever I go, with people pulling out cameras, but it doesn’t bother me.
“I’ve never been embarrassed about my height and I actually like the size I am. It’s something unique and original. My group of friends are great and I come from a good family, so being tall hasn’t ever been an issue. I’ve not been self-conscious.”
He originally was an athlete and played basketball in the NBA developmental league, but injury forced him to retire.
As well as Game Of Thrones, Fingleton also appeared in Doctor Who, Jupiter Ascending and X-Men: First Class.
His GoT character, Mag The Mighty, appeared in one episode of the show in 2014. The series four episode was called ‘The Watchers On The Wall’ and saw a battle between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings.

HealthNew AIDS Vaccine ‘cures’ Five Patients, Report Claims by LegendVibes(op): 6:17am On Feb 27, 2017

• Nigeria disease control centre insists only treatment recorded
Three weeks after Prof. Maduike Ezeibe of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Abia State claimed to have discovered a cure for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS), Spanish scientists over the weekend said five patients living with the disease are virus-free seven months after taking a new vaccine.
According to a study published in New Scientist but first reported by DailyMailUK Online, the treatment, developed by researchers in Spain, allowed the patients to stop taking regular antiretroviral (ARV) drugs – the current method of suppressing HIV.
Scientists have yet to test the results in a large-scale clinical trial, but they say the vaccine may be a “functional cure.”
It is the first step towards success in a field that has failed to find a vaccine in the last 30 years.
Dr. Beatriz Mothe, from the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain, said: “It’s the proof of concept that through therapeutic vaccination we can really re-educate our T cells to control the virus. This is the first time that we see this is possible in humans.”
Mothe and her colleagues used an HIV vaccine made by Professor Tomáš Hanke from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom (UK).
The study included 13 participants, who had taken ARVs for a little over three years on average – all within six months of being infected.
After four weeks, eight of the patients saw the virus rebound. But the other five patients have gone six to 28 weeks without having to restart the treatment.
The virus became temporarily undetectable, but it has never gone above 2,000 copies per milliliter, which is the criterion to restart treatment.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, told The Guardian yesterday that there is no cure for HIV/AIDS as claimed by Ezeibe. “No, there is no cure for HIV. It is important that we do not deceive our people. There is no cure for HIV. However, treatment is available that allows those infected to live healthy and productive lives. We encourage everyone to get tested, know their HIV status and if positive, get treatment in one of many centres in Nigeria. Treatment is free,” he said.
Ihekweazu said NCDC wants to avoid giving false hope to patients who may now abandon their Anti Retro Viral (ARVs) drugs thus leading to an increase in prevalence and mortality from the disease. He said the agency also does not want a situation where the trust of partners and donors in the country’s health system is lost.
How about the claim of HIV cure by Prof. Ezeibe? The NCDC boss said: “Science is universal and there is no place for sentiments when it comes to science. While I would love for this breakthrough to come from Nigeria, there should be no emotional considerations in assessing the validity of scientific evidence.

FamilyTeenage Pregnancy: A Silent Menance In Nigeria by LegendVibes(op): 9:17am On Feb 26, 2017
https://i2.wp.com/newtelegraphonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/pregnant-woman.png
Teenage pregnancy in Nigeria has been on an alarming increase in recent times. It has become a menace that plagues the lives of young girls in this century. It is defined as, an unintended pregnancy in female humans who are between the ages of 15–19 years; it can occur in ages as low as 12 years.
As at 2013, statistics by the National Population Commission showed that about (23%) of adolescent women aged 15-19 years were already mothers or pregnant with their first child. Researches have also shown that prevalence of this menace is highest in the North West Zone (36%) and lowest in the South East and South West Zones (8% each) of the country. About 80% of these pregnant teenagers were totally unprepared for this situation in which they ignorantly or innocently found themselves.
Teenage pregnancy carries a social stigma in many communities and cultures. A lot of researches have attributed the increase in teenage pregnancy in Nigeria to a number of factors, they include, absence of parental care and guidance, peer pressure, ignorance on the part of the teenager on sex related issues, financial hardship, low level of education, cultural and religious beliefs, sexual assault and many more.
It is commonly believed that all adolescent pregnancies happen by chance however, this is not usually true. A few young people effectively plan to end up pregnant by not utilizing contraception, believing that pregnancy is a genuine strength in some dicey situations.
In other situations, a few parents or guardians give their teenagers out in marriage on the grounds that they do not have the fortitude to provide food and educate them. The implications of teenage pregnancy are quite grave both for mother and child.
The after-effect of these consequences tell a great deal on the economy and society at large; they often are not immediately felt or seen but on the long run, they tell. Teen mothers suffer more from these implications. At the forefront of these consequences is unsafe abortion. Abortion is illegal in Nigeria, it is permitted only in exceptional cases where it is performed to save a woman’s life.
Unsafe abortion is one of the major reasons the maternal mortality rate (1500 women per 100,000 births) of the country is on the high side. According to the WHO, 14% of all unsafe abortions in developing countries are among women under 20 years of age.
Obstetric complications can also occur in teen mothers due to their body not being fully developed physically to sustain a healthy pregnancy or to give birth. These obstetric complications can result in mortality of either the mother/child or both. Contributing to these difficulties is their unwillingness to use antenatal and other health care facilities that would be beneficial to them due to stigmatization. Poor dietary patterns (skipping meals, eating junk foods) is a norm in adolescent ladies.
This unhealthy habit puts them at a higher risk of malnutrition which is further compounded by pregnancy. A malnourished pregnant teenager has limited reservoir of nutrients from which the foetus can take its supply. They also have a higher danger of postnatal depression than matured women.
This is undoubtedly because of various elements including an absence of support from companions as well as family, budgetary weights and societal pressures. Amongst the most troubling consequences for adolescent moms is not finishing their education.
They get to be drop outs and represent a high risk factor to the country’s economic development. This absence of training can bring about unemployment or occupation choices that are poorly paid and uncertain.
A low wage implies poor living conditions and not being able to manage the cost of satisfactory human services or even fundamental necessities. Shockingly, in this 21st century, there is still a stigma that is perceived from the public that brings a cloud of shame towards a teenage mother. This shame can influence the way a young mother feels about her child nurturing abilities and her failure as a person; such negative outlook slowers their self-esteem.
For the babies born to teenage mothers, they are usually preterm and of low birth weight. They have an increased risk of being still born or dying within the first few weeks of birth. Those that survive, are more likely to suffer from poor nutrition, childhood illnesses, poor cognitive and educational attainment, emotional and behavioural problems, and become teenage parents themselves.
Preventing teenage pregnancy ought to be the collective effort of all stakeholders, these include the individuals, parents, communities, the media and government. Quite a number of researches have shown that age-appropriate sex education and access to modern contraception are indispensable in averting teenage pregnancies.
Adolescent who were initiated to early sex practices, are usually uninformed, naïve and misinformed about sexual practices, their reproductive health, myths and contraception.
As proof of the hazards associated with teenage pregnancy, it is clear in many cases, that much more extensive approaches than sex education and access to modern contraceptives are required to avoid teenage pregnancies.
Security from abuse, family support, conducive environment, enhanced school care, building self-esteem, well equipped youth friendly centers and counselling are altogether required.
For teenagers who unfortunately get pregnant, appropriate counselling, affordable and adequate health care services, and alternative methods of education should be made available for them. All hands must be on deck to ensure that our teenage girls transit properly without any hazard.

PoliticsChanges Starts From The Top by LegendVibes(op): 3:16am On Feb 26, 2017

The change mantra of the new order under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari sounded sweet until the people began to swallow the bitter pills accompanying the promised revolution. However, in the midst of recession as often preached by those in power, governments at all levels in the country fritter away hard earned resources while they expect compatriots to tighten their belts. It indeed appears lame that while the people are forced to live with hardship induced by maladministration, our leaders are living big and doing virtually nothing to salvage the situation.
This idea of blaming the immediate past government of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan cannot sell anymore. We believe that after spending over 20 months in power, the Buhari administration should provide solution, not excuses.
And the way to get rid of the mess is still far away. Nigeria may be copying the American democratic ideals but we are not and cannot claim to be the United States. In other words, the Federal Government cannot because President Barack Obama flies around the world on Air Force One maintain a bogus Presidential Fleet of aircraft. If what the country needs at this time is an austere system of governance, it should start from the top. Government spends millions of scarce dollars and pounds to maintain the Presidential Fleet.
In the years of petro dollars, it could. We cannot afford to continue to live like Kings when our economy has been pauperized. Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Europe’s strongest economy can afford the luxury of a Presidential jet, she does not. Neither Queen Elizabeth of England nor British Prime Minister Theresa May fly a Presidential jet. Both powerful leaders enjoy the comfort of the British Airways. Unfortunately, Nigeria has no national carrier.
Nigeria Airways, our pride in the First and Second Republics, died because some corrupt government officials decided to make money out of our commonwealth. It is a national shame that tiny countries like Rwanda and Cameroun have more presence in the air. It is also more than national disgrace that when Nigerians want to travel, they embark on permutations on how to fly Air Maroc, South Africa Airways, Ethiopian Airlines or Egypt Air. Many of our state governors are burning tax payers money hiring and flying jets.
There is the case of a particular governor who has a jet handy and spends quite some time in the air while workers in the state air their frustrations frequently through work to rule. These flights cost millions of naira. It does not make sense that a state Chief Executive who says there is no money to pay workers doles out cash to junket in the skies. It is no longer news that another governor is so carried away by this executive recklessness, that in one day, while he chartered a jet to Abuja, his wife hired another one to Lagos. The lady does not work for the state but she used state money to fly.
On the road, the governors waste more money. A governor’s convoy could include as many as 25 vehicles. These automobiles and the legion that adorn the backyards of Government Houses are fuelled and serviced regularly even if they are not moving.
All manner of officials occupy the vehicles. Many of them would be better in the office facing problems confronting the state. As they travel and lunch alfresco with the governors, governance suffers. A governor does not need more than seven vehicles on his convoy.
The pilot car, his official car, a back up and maybe, a bus for all the retinue of commissioners and aides, another for the media team, then two others for security especially now that there are threats arising from the under performance of the so called leaders.
Some governors have Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Principal Secretary, Chief of Protocol, Private Secretary and all kinds of personal staff. Most of the time some of these aides only look after the numerous Guest Houses allocated to the governors. It is unbelievable that some states keep as many as 15 Guest Houses for the governors’ use. Things are not better in the legislature. From the office of the Senate President down to principal officers, so much money is spent on aides.
Some of these so called aides may never be seen or known. And many of them may just be aides in name and on paper. They may not receive what the treasury releases.
Government must take a look inwards and begin the change from within. So much money is wasted by the same administration that wants Nigerians to accept the worst. Government is a continuum. If the previous government led us into recession, the new regime must lead us to Paradise as promised. No more excuses.

PoliticsKaduna Constrain 24-hours Curfew On Communities by LegendVibes(op): 4:48am On Feb 22, 2017

Death toll rises to 26
Kaduna State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on troubled southern communities following the escalation of violence as a result of alleged attacks and killings by armed Fulani herdsmen.
Already, the death toll from the invasion of three villages in Kaura and one in Jema’a local councils in the southern part of the state by alleged herdsmen rose from 21 to 26 yesterday after the Atakad Development Association (ADA) confirmed the recovery of four more dead bodies and the death of another victim.
State Police Commissioner, Mr. Agyole Abeh, confirmed that he lost two of his men during the attack on Bakin Kogo village in Jema’a.
He said he had relocated to Kafanchan to co-ordinate the police efforts to ensure peace and security in the troubled area.
Abeh said: “Yes, two of my men were killed in Jema’a. But the situation has been brought under control. I have already relocated to Kafanchan as directed by the governor. I have just returned to Kaduna to brief the governor on the situation. But I want to assure you that we have the situation under control. From now on, I will be operating from Southern Kaduna.”
A statement by the governor’s media aide, Samuel Aruwan, said: “The Kaduna State Security Council has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Jema’a and Kaura Local Council of Kaduna State with immediate effect. The action became necessary to protect lives and property and avoid further breakdown of law and order in the two local councils.
“All security agencies on a special operation in the two local councils have been directed to ensure strict compliance. Only essential workers and those on humanitarian services are allowed movement after due clearance by security agencies.”
Meanwhile, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU has faulted the 24 hours curfew imposed on the two councils. It said that innocent natives have suffered both death and hunger than peace and security under such total curfew in the past.
And, reacting to the alleged attack by herdsmen yesterday, SOKAPU’s president, Dr. Musa Kaptain Solomon, said: “I want the position of SOKAPU to be clear. We are all in support of any lawful measure that would bring succour, peace and security to our people. We are not against any curfew if it would make us more secure.
“But our experience in the past few weeks has shown that anytime a curfew was imposed, it keeps our people at home for the marauders to easily attack. It was under a curfew and the heavy presence of police that Goska, a short distance from Kafanchan, was attacked last December.”

CelebritiesFear As Government Plans To Ban Danfo Buses In Lagos State by LegendVibes(op): 10:53am On Feb 19, 2017
https://i1.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/02/Danfo-Buses.jpg
For Ayo Bamidele, a typical day begins at 4:00 a.m. and ends 19 hours later at about
11:00 p.m. A driver of the popular commercial mini-bus, otherwise known as ‘Danfo’, Mr. Bamidele plies the Oshodi-Ilupeju route of the Lagos metropolis. But because he resides in Agbado-Ijaiye part of the city, he wakes up very early and gets home late in the night. And, like most Lagosians, Ayo does not enjoy the 7-9 hours sleep range recommended by the National Sleep Foundation.
“That early morning ‘rush hour’ is when we make our money as transporters, so I cannot afford to sleep at home when others are making money or else I will go hungry,” he told LEGENDVIBES in an interview.
“This is what I do to feed my family, pay rents and send my children to school,” he added.
But the recent pronouncement by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to banish yellow buses from Lagos road has sent jitters down Ayo’s spine. Like most commercial bus drivers in Lagos, he is apprehensive. He told our correspondent that if the government eventually executes its plan, he is worried about the fate of commercial bus drivers whose source of income is the yellow ‘danfo’ bus.
“To be frank, many of us are afraid now. We don’t know what the government wants to do exactly and what it wants us to do; we don’t know how it expects us to feed our families and survive if it banishes ‘danfo’ from the road,” he told LEGENDVIBES.
Akinwunmi Ambode’s plan
While speaking at the 14th Annual Lecture of the Centre for Value and Leadership held in Lagos with the theme: “Living Well Together,
Tomorrow: The Challenge of Africa’s Future Cities,” Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State had said that he would banish yellow commercial buses from Lagos roads this year.
Mr. Ambode, while buttressing his points, had maintained that connectivity was a critical element for a mega city to work, which required having mass transit systems to move people from one point to another.
https://i1.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/02/Akinwunmi-Ambode-1.jpg
“I tell you what, I want to banish yellow buses from Lagos this year,” the governor had said, adding that there was still a lot more to be achieved as regard making Lagos one of the vibrant cities of the world.
“My dream of ensuring that Lagos becomes a true megacity will not be actualised with the presence of these yellow buses on Lagos roads.”
According to Mr. Ambode, cities are the most attractive destination for those who want to realise their dreams.
“It is estimated that 86 immigrants enter Lagos every hour – the highest in any city in the world – and they have no plans to leave.
“This is because Lagos has remained over time, and most especially in the last decade, the most attractive destination for those who want to realise and live their Nigerian dream.
“This ever increasing population of the state however means that we have to be on our toes to provide facilities for this more than 23 million population,” Mr. Ambode said.
The state government has, however, not announced the modalities for the phasing out of the buses.
Impossible dreams
A survey by LEGENDVIBES revealed that some commercial bus drivers in the metropolis believe the proposed plan cannot be executed by the state government. Many of them expressed concerns over what would become of them if thrown off the road.
https://i2.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2017/02/IMG-20170214-00313.jpg
“It is not possible… it is a crazy idea. Who will feed our families? What job has the so-called government created for us? Where does he want us to dump our numerous buses? Would the proposed new buses even reach every part of Lagos like we do? It is a crazy idea…” an apparently furious Joe Eze, a commercial bus driver at Ilupeju, told our correspondent.
For another driver who simply identified himself as “Baba Luku”, the yellow commercial mini-bus popularly known as ‘Danfo’ has been a part of Lagos for a long time and it would be difficult, if not impossible, for any government to banish it from the road.
“Those who say they want to banish yellow buses from our roads, as well as their forebears, met the system on ground. ‘Danfo’ is Lagos and Lagos is ‘Danfo’,” he told LEGENDVIBES in Yoruba language, amidst laughter.
Baba Luku, who plies the Mushin-Oshodi route of the metropolis, added that the plan, if executed, would only aggravate the security situation in the state, noting that it would negatively affect the rate of armed robbery and all sorts of criminal activities in the state.
“Ambode is doing fairly well in terms of security, let him not jeopardize his efforts with this ill-conceived idea. Where does he want the army of conductors and drivers of the yellow buses to go? He wants to push us into criminality?” he said.
Ayo Bamidele, a driver, said, “I have a family I feed, clothe and send to school from this business. I am a Poly(technic) graduate but there is no job. The government doesn’t provide jobs yet it wants to take away the one we have. It is unfair.”
Drivers, Conductors Plead
Others who spoke with our correspondent however pleaded with the state government to look into the plan holistically, by considering its implication on the lives of people who feed their families with the income generated from their daily operations as drivers and conductors.
On his part, Edwin Igwe, a driver who plies the Oshodi-Toll gate route of the city, pleaded with the government to be considerate in the execution of the policy, adding that an alternative plan should be provided for the drivers.
“Government should be considerate… some of us took these buses on ‘hired purchase’ arrangement, how does it want us to survive and pay the debt? Where do we even dump the buses? The plan is hasty and insensitive,” he said.
Explaining further, he noted that the government could as well extend the period it plans to banish the buses from the road, so it would enable affected drivers plan for other means of survival.
“Even if Ambode wants to ban the yellow buses, it should not be this year. He could as well give us a three or two years notice so that those who want to invest in other businesses would have time to plan and invest.”
Mr. Bamidele, who plies the Oshodi-Ilupeju route, said the government could as well adjust the present system by regulating the activities of the bus drivers and conductors, rather than banish them from the road.
“If you want to take something from someone, you give him another thing. The government can come up with alternatives for us or even make adjustment to the present system instead of banishing our buses from the road,” he said.
When LEGENDVIBES approached a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Oshodi unit, he declined to speak with our correspondent.
Passengers react
Mixed reactions, however, trailed the news of the proposed ban among passengers who spoke with LEGENDVIBES.
“I think the plan is good and will enhance development. But it will also force people out of job. Government can look at it very well and see how it will minimize the negative effects,” a trader at Oshodi market, Sadiat Ajani, said.
“It is the best thing to come out of this (Ambode) administration, I support it hundred percent. Those drivers are so reckless and manner-less. They deserve to go,” a civil servant who declined to have his name in print, told our correspondent at Ikeja.
Others who expressed concern over the operations of the government-owned buses, said the ‘Danfo’ drivers should be spared but their routes could be defined and regulated.
“I think traders will be most affected by this plan. Let them have dedicated routes. The state-run BRT buses don’t allow traders and their goods to join the buses. Yellow bus drivers and conductors are the ones we rely on. It is possible this new system too will not allow us (traders) convey our goods in their buses. It will just lead to suffering and frustration for us (traders),” an agricultural produce trader who simply identified herself as Alimot, told our correspondent.
A civil servant who works on the Island, Ade Johnson, however, said the plan would affect the transport system in the state as the proposed government-run buses would not be as effective as the yellow bus system.
“I work in Victoria Island and I leave at Sango; only the yellow bus can ensure that when I wake up by 4:30 a.m., I will get a bus and get to office in no time,” he said.
“Most BRTs start operation around
7:30 a.m. or even at a time later than that but ‘danfo’ is already on the road by 4:00 a.m. Again, BRTs close for work by around 9:00 p.m. or thereabouts but ‘danfo’ operates till around 11:30 p.m. or 12:00 a.m.
“As you can see, if those yellow buses are banished from Lagos roads, passengers are the ones who would bear the brunt and suffer the most.”
