PoliticsFayose Gets Approval To Borrow N19.6bn by lekanolas(op): 4:28pm On Sep 09, 2015
Ekiti State House of Assembly on Wednesday unanimously approved N19.6 billion loan facilities for the state government.

The approval followed two different letters written by Gov. Ayo Fayose requesting the house consent to access the loans.

The letters are, “Consideration of the proposal of the State Government to Partake in the Excess Crude Account and Consideration of the Intention of Ekiti State Government to Partake in the Federal Government Bailout Package to pay Backlog of Workers’ Salaries’’.

A breakdown of the loans showed that the state would access N10 billion from Access Bank on 10 years and 9 per cent repayment arrangement.

Also, the state government would access N9,604,430,000 from Skye Bank on 20 years and 9 per cent repayment arrangement.

The Leader of the house, Mr Akinyele Olatunji, had appealed to members to give the request accelerated considerations.

Olatunji described the government intention as a good development, saying that it would better the lives of Ekiti citizenry.

“Access to the N10 billion Excess Crude Account (ECA) and over N9.6 billion Federal Government bailout loan, respectively is a good development for the state.

“The loans will enable the present administration provide basic infrastructure and social amenities for its citizens.

“If the government is able to access these loans the government will be able to execute developmental projects.

“Apart from the loan being used to pay the backlog of workers’ salaries, it will also enable the government provide some basic social amenities in the state,’’ Olatunji said.

The views of the leader of the house was corroborated by the trio of Messrs Gboyega Aribisogan (Ikole I), Deputy Speaker, Segun Adewumi (Ekiti West I), and Dele Fajemileyin (Gbonyin).

They described the decision by the state government to access the loans as the best way out of the current financial situation.

“If these loans are obtained, it will take care of government campaign promises to the people,’’ they said in their different contributions to the debate.

Earlier, the Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, had read the two executive letters from the governor requesting the house permission through resolutions.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the police would rely on the government circular on use of siren.

“We will still go by the Federal government circular in implementing the directive,“ Kolawole said.

She said that the rate at which siren was being used in the country had reduced drastically because of the efforts of the police.

Kolawole warned that the police would not hesitate to arrest any unauthourised persons found using the siren.

“The police will not relent in their effort to carry out their duty,“ she said.

She stressed that the police would always be on its guard to enforce law and order in the country.

“I just want to let you know that this current police administration will not condone any act of public disorder, “ she said.

She urged motorists not to pay money for permit for the use of vehicles with tinted glasses, as it was free.

Kolawole said that the only authourity with the sole right to issue the permit were; the Inspector-General of Police and state commissioners of police.

She advised motorists to take advantage of the whistle blowing platform opportunity to report to the police any personnel who demanded money from them.

PoliticsBuhari, Tinubu In Fresh Move Against Saraki by lekanolas(op): 10:21am On Aug 02, 2015
There are fresh indications that President Muhammadu Buhari and the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, have allegedly forged a secret alliance to ease Senate President, Bukola Saraki out of office

The fresh move against Saraki, NewDay learnt is in threefold.

The first part of which has already been experimented through the now waning police report on the alleged forgery of the Senate Rules.

The second, considered as political, is a design aimed at branding Saraki and his supporters as ‘enemies’ of the President.

The third, according to our source, is that Saraki will be pressurised to throw in the towel once his wife, Toyin, who has been interrogated twice by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is formally charged to court.

Aware of the fresh plot, Saraki has resorted to seeking the assistance of Emirs and traditional rulers to help pacify President Buhari and Tinubu to drop the idea of plotting to ease him out of office.

Already, Saraki has reached out to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi I and the Emir of his home town, Ilorin, Kwara State, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari to intercede on his behalf with Buhari.

Both Emirs have already established communication with Buhari.

The monarchs had wanted to meet with Buhari but could not as a result of the President’s visit to the United States and his recent visit to Cameroon to seek for regional collaboration against Boko Haram.

Saraki has also commenced moves to pacify Tinunu by appointing some of his loyalists in the Senate to to key and strategic positions in the Senate ad-hoc committees

Saraki on Wednesday named Senator Babajide Omoworare, a key loyalist of Tinubu, as the chairman of Senate Committee on Rules and Business, the engine room of the Senate’s operations

Newsday learnt that Saraki was actually disposed to offering his arch rival, Senator Ahmed Lawan the Senate Leader position, but that his pleas with senators from the North East caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were rebuffed.

PoliticsCourt Stops Planned Demolition Of Ladipo Market by lekanolas(op): 7:01am On Aug 01, 2015
Reprieve came the way of traders at the popular Ladipo Market on Friday when a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja restrained officials of the Mushin local government area of Lagos State from going ahead with the planned demolition of the market.

The court presided over by Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe ordered the local government to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of a suit filed by some traders in the market.

No fewer than 10 traders including Nnamdi Chukwuka and Franco Offia had approached the court seeking an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the local government, either by itself, agents, officials, privies, servants or persons, from unlawfully carrying out any demolitions or ejection of the applicants from their respective business premises at the market pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit filed before the court.

The traders are also asking for the sum of N5 million damages as compensation for the loss they suffered when part of the market was demolished in June 2015.

The case was however stalled due to a prayer by counsel to the defendant (Mushin local government), Mrs A.O. Akin-Ajayi, seeking more time to respond to the suit because she was served with a copy of the processes only recently (July 27).

Akin-Ajayi told the court that she was surprised that the traders decided to file the action after a group, Igbo Conscience Group, waded into the matter.

The meeting, however, turned out to be for a secret endorsement of Jonathan’s candidacy.

In attendance at the meeting were Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo of the Winners Chapel; Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, CAN President; Rev. Felix Omobude, PFN President; Pastor Paul Adefarasin, PFN Vice President; Pastor Wale Adefarasin of the Guiding Light Assembly and other key Christian leaders in the nation.

Pastor Osinbajo was also at the meeting to seek their blessing to support him and the candidacy of Muhammed Buhari.

Pastor Paul Adefarasin was said to have broken the silence when he asked Adeboye who they should support since his ‘son’, Pastor Osinbajo is vying for the vice presidency with Buhari.

They wanted Aeboye to say something and Osinbajo was watching as he believed that Adeboye will certainly ask other leaders to endorse him, but he was disappointed.

Adeboye was said to have told them that he is a man under authority and that since he is under the authority of CAN and PFN, whoever they endorsed, he would support and go with them.

It was then that Oyedepo stood up and said he had prayed and that God was leading him to endorse and support Jonathan and that was the script the Christian leaders adopted at the expense of Osinbajo.

Instead of the meeting being for prayer for the nation, it was gathered that it turned out to be for the secret endorsement of Jonathan as all the leaders present except Osinbanjo agreed that CAN and PFN should go with Jonathan.

Osinbajo was not allowed to address the Christian leaders, giving the excuse that since the other contesting party was not present, they would not allow him to address the audience.

He was said to be downcast as his own rejected his aspiration.

PoliticsLabaran Maku Fails To Get APGA Ticket by lekanolas(op): 7:06am On Jan 01, 2015
Former minister of information Labaran Maku yesterday failed in his bid to secure the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to run for governor of Nasarawa State, after the holder of the ticket declared his resolve to run for the office.

Maku had led a delegation of his supporters for discussions with APGA governorship candidate, Matthew Umbugaku, at the latter’s office in Abuja, on the feasibility of Umbugaku handing over the party’s governorship ticket to Maku in the forthcoming general elections.

However, in yesterday’s deliberations, the APGA flag bearer was said to have stated his intention to run for the office, insisting that he was not ready to relinquish his slot.

Umbugaku’s spokesman, Mannix Ebhota, told reporters that the APGA candidate was ready to kick-start campaigns on januarry 5, starting with sensitisation tour of communities and towns throughout the state. On his boss’ chances of winning, he noted that Umbugaku had a lot of developmental programmes which will be unveiled during the campaign, saying he is the best candidate for the state’s top job.

Umbugaku is credited with establishing APGA in the state and was elected unopposed in the party’s governorship primary on December 9, 2014, while Maku lost the governorship ticket of his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), coming in second place.

Since then, Maku has reportedly been seeking an alternative political platform to fulfil his ambition to govern his state, after resigning from President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet. He was said to have unsuccessfully tried to run on Labour Party’s platform.

PoliticsTompolo’s Cousin Emerges Delta PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate by lekanolas(op): 7:47am On Dec 28, 2014
Delta State gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, yesterday picked the nominee of a former militant commander in the Niger Delta, Chief Government Ekpemukpolo (alias Tompolo), Mr Kingsley Otuaro, as his running mate in the February 2015 governorship election.

The emergence of Otuaro, an Ijaw ethnic nationality and cousin of the ex-militant leader put an end to the protracted battle over the choice of running mate to the candidate of the ruling party in the state.

Otuaro is presently a commissioner representing the Ijaw ethnicity on the board of the state’s oil agency, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC). He hails from Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West local government area of the state.

It was learnt that Okowa has forwarded Otuaro’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to beat yesterday’s deadline set by the electoral umpire.

The choice of Okowa’s deputy has been a subject of acrimony among the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko ethnic nationalities in Delta South Senatorial District of the state.

The Ijaw and Isoko were opposed to the Ijaw picking the slot on the strength that it could not add it to the senatorial ticket of the ruling party already won by another Ijaw citizen, Senator James Manager, who is running a fourth-term ticket.

Each of the ethnic nationalities had mounted pressures on Okowa to pick his running mate from the group. It was learnt that the disagreement by the three ethnic nationalities accounted for the delay in filling the slot.

PoliticsAtiku Woos APC Delegates With N50,000 Each by lekanolas(op): 6:33am On Nov 23, 2014
Even before the commencement of the presidential primaries of the opposition party All Progressives Congress (APC), former vice president Abubakar Atiku has splashed about N16.4million on Katsina APC, that included N50,000 each to the state’s 208 delegates.

Atiku, who is one of the frontline presidential aspirants of the APC, gave the money on Saturday when he visited Katsina State to lobby delegates preparatory to the party’s presidential primary election.

Speaking at the Katsina State APC Secretariat, Atiku said he viewed the APC in Katsina State as an orphan, because the party is not in government. He then announced the donation of N5 million to the state secretariat, N1 million to the elders of the party, and N50,000 each to the 208 delegates.

“APC in Katsina Sstate is an orphan. I said this because it is not in government. I have seen the condition of the secretariat; so in my capacity as one of the elders of the party, I give the party secretariat N5 million, the elders N1 million and the delegates N50,000 each,”

He added that he was confident of winning the primary election, while stressing that “the time for consensus has gone, because it is too late for the process of consensus”, adding that the best thing for the party was to go for the primaries.

In a short speech, the Katsina State APC chairman, Dr Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa, extolled the virtues of the former vice president and said “Nigeria needs the likes of Atiku”.

Politics200 Reps Sign Impeachment Motion Against Jonathan by lekanolas(op): 6:16am On Nov 23, 2014
Not fewer than 200 members of the House of Representatives have endorsed a motion seeking to institute impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan, House minority whip, Rep. Samson Osagie, has said.

Osagie (APC Edo), said they have far exceeded the number required by the constitution to serve president Jonathan impeachment notice.

Members of the House began collecting signatures for a motion against the president last Thursday following a siege on the National Assembly by police.
Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and other lawmakers were locked out of the parliament building for hours and had to scale the fence but on getting inside the complex, they were tear gassed by police.
The House was reconvened to consider the emergency rule extension in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, a request forwarded by the president but police laid siege to the National Assembly preventing lawmakers and workers from gaining access into the building.

Members had on Thursday commenced collecting signatures after a motion on the matter was tabled by an MP from Kano State.
Osagie said there are over 20 impeachable offences against the president which include, “gross incompetence in the administration of the nation, mismanagement of the nation’s resources resulting in untold hardship on the citizens and inability to recover stolen funds from various ministries and agencies”.
