The Federal Government on Wednesday said the 16 500 resident doctors on its payroll have not been sacked.

The Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, made this known while fielding questions from State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

The clarification is rather late, coming a week after the announcement of the suspension of the doctors residency programme in all Federal Government hospitals.

Chukwu blamed misinterpretation for the wrong signal sent out, insisting that the programme has only been suspended to give room for total overhaul by a committee that would soon be put in place.

He, however, hinted that the suspension of the residency programme may last for months.

His words: “They were not sacked.

“It is a matter of interpretation.

“For example, if someone while still working actively dies or whether that person resigned or was dismissed or retired or terminated, all mean different things in the public service.

“But the end point is that the person is no longer working.

“I want us to put things in perspective.

“Government did not sack anybody.

This is contained in a statement signed by Dan Nwomeh, his Special Assistant on Media and Communication.

“Presently, Nigeria has only two confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease.

“This clarification follows media reports of five new cases in Lagos State. The report should be disregarded.

“Any doubtful information on the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria should be verified from the office of the Minister of Health.

“The minister has the sole authority to announce confirmed cases as far as disease in Nigeria is concerned,’’ the statement stated and promised that any new confirmed case would be promptly announced.

Moves by the Nigerian Medical Association ( NMA ) and the National Association of Resident Doctors ( NARD ) to pressurize the federal government to withdraw the circular suspending residency training programme have fell on deaf ears as officials at the Federal Ministry of Health were adamant on reversing the suspension.

The suspension of the residency training programme indirectly means the sack of about 16 000 medical doctors, leaving behind 3000 medical consultants and higher ranking medical personnel to cater for medical services around the country.

The government also lampooned the medical doctors for embarking on protest and demonstration in Abuja, calling their actions as hypocritical.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Linus Awute, stated this Saturday in an interview with journalists in Abuja.

Awute observed that though the doctors claimed to be on strike, some were working on the field.

He blamed the doctors for the decision by the federal government to suspend residency training for the medical practitioners, including the directive to the managements of public hospitals to find replacement for them.

One of the National Youth Service Corps members currently doing their orientation in Ekiti slumped and collapsed at the orientation camp.
Rather than his colleagues coming to his rescue, they all ran thinking the guy might have contacted the Ebola Virus.
It took the intervention of camp officials and the Ekiti State Ministry of Health before he was rescued.
It was discovered that he was suffering from chronic fever.
To be sure of his correct state of health, his blood samples were taken and sent to Lagos.
He did not test positive to the Ebola Virus.
The corps member has since been taken away from the camp and is currently being kept at an isolated centre located within Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.

Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State on Friday married the first daughter of late President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua, Maryam.

The wedding which was conducted shortly after Friday prayers at the Usman Danfodio Mosque saw several dignitaries in attendance including Kebbi State Governor, Saidu Dakingari.

Dakingari himself is married to Zainab, one of the late president’s daughters while another of his daughters, Hafsat, is married to Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State.

Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar Farouk, who stood in for the bride’s family, received a dowry of N20, 000 from the groom’s representatives.

Alhaji Mande Haliru, who paid the bride price, stood in for the groom, while Chief Imam Ahmed Mohammed- a former Grand Khadi, officiated the ceremony.

Shortly after prayers for the wedding, the Chief Imam urged the couple to be fair and just to each other, and for the bride to be obedient at all times to her husband. He also called on the bride to be loyal and respectful to the senior wife, even as he wished them a happy and fruitful marriage.

The occasion, which was attended by several political office holders in the state, also saw former Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, in attendance.

Following the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in the country, churches in Anambra State under the auspices of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) have raised prayer warriors to fight against the spread of the virus.

Bbriefing reporters on Friday at Gelly’s Gardens resort in Awka, the state chairman of Social Security Outreach (SSO), a political arm of (PFN), Evangelist Peter A.K Okoye, said very soon the virus would be a thing of the past.

He said with the efforts of the Federal and State governments and the combined prayers by the churches, that the battle would soon end.

Also, the chairman media group of (SSO), Pastor Emma Obiorah, told reporters in Awka yesterday that intercessors had been set up from different churches to checkmate the spread of the virus.

“Ebola is just a name given to one sickness out of many, but Christians have started praying that God will heal all, including the so called deadly virus,” he said.

The Lagos State Government has declared its resolve not to use any drug other than the American ZMAPP for the Ebola patients in its custody.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide idris, disclosed this on Friday.

As at Friday evening, it was still sketchy if the drug has arrived the shores of Nigeria.

Dr Idris said the Nano Silver being suggested by the Federal Government by a Nigerian scientist is a natural health product and the state is not ready to take chances with the health of the patients at all.

“Should we have access to ZMAPP now, right away, we will start the administration on the patients.

“We are attending a meeting soon with the Task Force on Ebola to know if the ZMAPP drug is available as stated by the Federal government,”Idris said.

Meanwhile, Idris disclosed yesterday that First Consultant Hospital where the first case of EVD occurred would be reopened soon.

This, he said, followed the mandatory three rounds of state certified decontamination process.

He said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Clinic, was shut after the detection of a confirmed case of the disease at the facility.

He said the state would facilitate the decontamination process of the clinic, adding: “25 patients and health workers at the facility when the case was detected are presently under surveillance.”.

Obi Justina Ejelonu, a nurse who attended to Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American Ebola carrier who flew to Nigeria on his way to attend a conference in Calabar, has died. Her relatives confirmed some moments ago that she passed away this morning.

Ms. Ejelonu had been kept in a quarantine facility in Lagos.

Until her death, the outdpoken nurse was at the center of a campaign to get the Zmapp experimental drugs to Ebola victims in Nigeria.

Ms. Ejelonu was one of the primary contacts with Patrick Sawyer at a Lagos Hospital where he received treatment after he was rushed from the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos where he collapsed. She was aged 25, her relatives said.

114 days after the Boko Haram sect abducted over 200 schoolgirls from a government secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, a clergyman has volunteered to go to the camps of the sect to secure their release.

Pastor Sunday Adebayo Joseph of the Christ Apostolic Church said the release of the missing girls could not be achieved by the use of armed force, but through divine intervention.

He said that God was angry with the sect and Nigerians for allowing the abuse of the girls and that he had been spiritually mandated to locate the sect’s hideout and rescue the girls.

“The Chibok girls that had been captured more than three months ago can be released.

The message of God is that no amount of weapons and their usage that can bring them back alive. Thus, the God of Christ Apostolic Church has promised to use me to rescue the girls, one single day, no harm will befall them.

“They will be rescued alive by the power of God. With God all things are possible. Before I go on the mission, I will deliver God’s message to our president Dr Goodluck Jonathan,” Pastor Joseph said.

When reminded of the risky nature of his mission, Joseph said that he had the backing of his God to set the captives free.

“The sins perpetrated by Boko Haram have cried to God for vengeance. God has liberated people from bondage before, so this one is no exception,” he said.

The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) on Monday advised the Federal Government against banning Hijab (Muslim female headscarves), saying such proposal would be unconstitutional.

Okey Wali, the President of the association, rather urged the government to find a lasting and peaceful solution to the security challenges threatening the country.

Wali said in Abuja that placing a ban on wearing Hijab due to the recent spate of attacks by female suicide bombers was not a positive and lasting strategy to curbing insecurity.

The NBA president was reacting to recent calls by some members of the public that the government should ban wearing Hijab to checkmate female suicide bombers.

Wali said that it was the right of every individual to dress according to the requirement of his or her religion, adding that it was not an option to ask female Muslim faithful to stop wearing the Hijab.

“Wearing of Hijab by the female Muslim faithful has religious as well as cultural meaning, and nobody can take away that right from them.

“The security agencies should find lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges rather than place a ban on wearing of Hijab as that is an easy way out,” he said.

Genera Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, after a meeting of the Governing Council of the church on Monday announced some changes in the church hierarchy with the retirement of two members of the council after attaining the retirement age as stipulated by the constitution.

A statement by the head of Media and Public Relations, Pastor Segun Adegbiji, said the two officers retired are Pastor Oluwalogbon and Pastor C.O. Osho.

Two members of the church who have served the church meritoriously have been appointed to replace them.

They are Pastor Johnson Funso Odesola who had served the church for 40 years and Pastor Remi Akintunde following 38 years of meritorious service.

The number of special assistants to the General Overseer has also been increased from 12 to 19 with the inclusion of seven other members.

Pastor Kola Bolanta is in charge of South America; Pastor James Fadele in charge of North America; Pastor Agu Irukwu in charge of United Kingdom and Pastor Olowu in charge of Europe.

Others include Pastor Tosin Macaulay in charge of North Africa; Pastor J.K. Loaded in charge of Region 10 Abuja and Pastor Charles Adegoke on his way to the Middle East.

Adeboye also announced the constitution of a World Advisory Council which is expected to meet every December to give proposal for the consideration of the Governing Council.

Members include all former members of the governing council and all special assistants to the G.O.
Adeboye also announced tremendous growth in Nigeria within the last two years, saying the church planted 28 582 parishes in the year 2012-2013 and 32 036 parishes in 2013-2014.

He said a total of 332 800 souls were won for Christ in 2012-2013 and 507 472 others gave their lives to Christ in 2013-2014.

He said six new regions have been created in Nigeria, making the number of regions in the country to 24 just as 28 new provinces have been created.

A Nigerian woman has emerged winner in a Muslim beauty contest that is similar to the Miss World contest that has sparked hard-line anger.

Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola, tearfully prayed and recited Koranic verses as she won the beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital yesterday.

The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos.

But the contestants from six countries were covered from head to foot, were judged on how well they recited Koranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world.

After a show in front of an audience of mainly religious scholars and devout Muslims, a panel of judges picked Ajibola from Nigeria as the winner.

While the event in a Jakarta shopping mall paled in comparison to Miss World on the resort island of Bali, in which scores of contestants are competing, Ajibola was nevertheless overwhelmed.

Upon hearing her name, the 21-year-old knelt down and prayed, then wept as she recited a Koranic verse.

She said it was “thanks to almighty Allah” that she had won the contest. She received 25 million rupiah ($2,200) and trips to Mecca and India as prizes.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubarkar’s plot to lure the seven aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the newly formed Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) may have hit the rocks, as the governors appear to prefer alliance with their counterparts in the All Progressives Congress (APC). The alliance talk according to a reliable source made available to Sunday Mirror is billed to commence on Tuesday in Abuja.

It was gathered that the proposed meeting of a faction of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) led by the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, fixed for Tuesday is a cover for the alliance talks which the leadership of the APC had three days ago, endorsed.

According to a competent source in the APC who confided in our correspondent, the need for the governors to meet on time was informed by the reports that the newlyregistered Peoples PDM led by the former V-P was also making overtures to the G-7 governors to join forces with it ahead of the election year.

“You know that it is impossible for the governors in the new PDP to work with Atiku; he merely came into the picture at the venue of the convention, so the best thing is for them to meet with the APC governors and agree on what to do to vote out the PDP in 2015.

“The options are many but they are trying to harmonise them so that when they come out finally, no one will fault the other.” The source gave two options as outright defection to the APC or staying within the PDP to undermine it in 2015.

Major Hamza Al- Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer, CSO, to late the Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, , has written the Army High Command, requesting for concessions on his position in the Army.

Sources in the Army told our correspondent that Al- Mustapha is seeking his accelerated promotion to the rank of a Major-General and his consequent retirement with his full benefits paid.

The argument had been that due to his “age on rank”, he should be retired as a Major from the Army but the former CSO is seeking a waiver on the grounds that he was unjustly incarcerated.

For the over 14 years that Al-Mustapha spent in prison, the Army high command had paid half of his monthly salary to his family.

While Al-Mustapha’s case has been presented to the Army council, the Legal Department is said to be studying the issue with a view to coming up with mutually acceptable recommendations.

Our correspondent learnt yesterday that Al- Mustapha’s lawyers were waiting the Army’s resolution of the issue with a view to either accepting it or approaching the law courts to get a fair deal for their client.

The Army Council is composed of the Minister of Defence, Permanent Secretary, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff and some other administrative staff.

Director, Army Public Relations, Brig- Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, said that as a professional force, the Army had already looked into Al-Mustapha’s case and had forwarded his petition to the Army Council.

He also confirmed that the Legal Department was already handling the issue.

Human rights Lawyer, Mike Ozekhome wept when he arrived his Lagos home Thursday (today) afternoon after his release from the kidnappers den.
Grey bearded Ozekhome, who spent 20 days in captivity, wept on sighting his children and relatives.
On alighting from the black Ford Escalade SUV which brought him, the lawyer embraced his wife and was heard saying, ‘Thank you Jesus’.
Security sources, who craved anonymity, disclosed that Ozekhome was released unhurt in the early hours of the day at an undisclosed location in Edo state, where he was eventually picked up by family.It was not known if any ransom was paid just as the fate of his driver who was abducted with him was not known.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funso Adebanjo, who confirmed Ozekhome’s release in a telephone chat with National Mirror.
“Yes, I can confirm that he has been released. I am not in Benin City right now but I will give you the details later,” he was quoted as saying.
Ozekhome and his driver were kidnapped on Friday, August 23 on the Benin—Auchi—Okene Expressway.

While outdated Nigerian prisons are congested with “Awaiting Trial” detainees and notorious convicts, the Dutch government is in the process of closing at least 8 of its prisons due to “lack of criminals”.
Reports quoting the Huffington Post and the local media in Netherlands said the Dutch justice ministry now accommodates only 12,000 detainees while it has the capacity for 14,000 prisoners. This situation is now prompting the move to close eight prisons as part of a continued move to further decongest the prison population.
To further harp on the reformatory aspect of the prison system, a group, the Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA), which represents more than 60 organisations, urged the Dutch government to urgently limit “the unnecessary use of prison, ensuring it is reserved for serious, persistent and violent offenders for whom no alternative sanction is appropriate”.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, yesterday gave Kwara State Government a seven-day ultimatum to redress alleged general discrimination against Christians or face its wrath.

The state CAN Chairman, Rev. James Folaranmi, who issued the ultimatum at a press conference, complained of discriminations against his members in the areas of political appointments, education and some others.

For example, Folaranmi said out of 146 key political positions in the state, only 29 were for Christians, which he said amounted to 10 per cent whereas the Christians “form about 50 per cent of qualified personnel, using every parameter”.

According to the CAN chairman, the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Head of Service, Chief of Staff, chairman, Teaching Service Commission, Primary Education Board, SUBEB, heads of tertiary institutions in the state, all secretaries, treasurers and the directors of personnel in all the 16 local governments are all Muslims.

He also said there were only five Christian commissioners in the state while chairmen of the boards of agencies nominated from the state were Muslims, adding that the head of the State Civil Service Commission and three other members were also Muslims.

Folaranmi also said the recent ‘selection’ of chairmanship, vice-chairmanship and councillorship candidates for 15 local governments by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the October council polls was grossly one-sided. He said out of 21 permanent secretaries, seven were Christians, while others were Muslims.

This, according to him, also applies to the directorates of Personnel and Management, Finance and Supply in all the ministries The CAN chairman accused the government of forcing Muslim board members on the Teaching Service Commission to effect transfer and promotion of Christian teachers to suit their own will, even in schools owned by Christians and voluntary organisations. He said: “Out of 41 government- owned secondary schools, there is only one principal who is a Christian.

“The rector of the polytechnic, the provosts of the three colleges of education and the vice-chancellor of the state university, including the two schools of nursing and the school of technology, Offa, whose heads are all Muslims.

Scores of politicians from different parties in Ogun State yesterday defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Residents of Lagos yesterday stormed the Dawis Central Mosque at Owode Onirin Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road after it was claimed that Muslims spotted the ghosts of late clerics, Sheikh Ibraheem Inyass and Sheikh Jamiu Bulala, at the mosque.

According to the President of Dawis, an Islamic organisation that owns the mosque, Mukadam Samodu Ibrahim Onikoyi, news of the oddity started gathering momentum on Monday morning after a worshipper came to pray.

Onikoyi said: “For the past one month, we have been seeing the opaque image of Sheikh Ibraheem Inyass in our mosque. We informed the founder of the organisation, but he told us to remain quiet about it so that people would not turn the environment to something else.

The 57 members of the House of Representatives belonging to the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said yesterday that Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is in their group.

Fifty-seven out of the 205 PDP members in the House had on Tuesday declared support for the faction as they warned anti-graft agencies against harassment and intimidation.

Tambuwal and other principal officers are currently attending the Pan African Parliament, PAP, conference in South Africa.

Though the speaker’s name was not listed among those who signed for the “New PDP,” the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Zakari Mohammed, said: “Tambuwal is a man of the majority and therefore naturally belongs to the new PDP, which is progressive and responsive.”

Mohammed, who disclosed this in a telephone interview, explained that Tambuwal is a grassroots leader and could not abandon his people and governor who were part of the “revolution” in the party.

He said: “Although I cannot speak for the honourable speaker, I can confirm that he is the people’s speaker; he is the speaker for all and so would naturally flow with the majority. Besides, he cannot abandon his governor in the struggle. He is from Sokoto State and the Governor, Aliyu Wamakko is a prime mover of this PDP, so he cannot be missing in action. But it is left for you to read the writing on the wall.”
