Jibrin filed the suit at the Federal High Abuja on Friday shortly after he withdrew the one of Aug. 9 challenging plans to stop his suspension,

The former chairman of appropriation committee is seeking one billion naira as damages for his suspension.

He had made damning allegations against the Speaker, Rep. Yakubu Dogara, his Deputy, Yussuf Lasun; Chief Whip, Ado Doguwa; Minority Leader, Leo Ogor; and nine other members, accusing them of padding the 2016 budget.

Jibrin, in the fresh suit, urged the court to declare his suspension as a violation of his fundamental human right to freedom of expression.

He prayed the court to declare that the resolution passed by the House of Representatives suspending him was in breach of Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

He asked the court to restrain the House of Representatives from preventing him from. Participating in the committees of the House or accessing the legislative chambers to perform his legislative duties.

Justice John Tsoho has fixed Nov.22 for hearing of the suit.

Earlier, Tosho had struck out a suit filed by Jibrin, challenging his suspension from the House after his counsel Chukuma Nwachukwu asked for discontinuance.

PoliticsJibrin Withdraws Suit Against House Of Reps by lekanolas(op): 12:26pm On Oct 21, 2016
The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday struck out the suit of Abdulmumin Jibrin, a former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, challenging his suspension from the House.

The judge, Justice John Tsoho, struck out the matter after Jibrin’s Counsel, Mr Chukuma Nwachukwu, told the court that his client had filed a notice of discontinuance.

Tsoho decline the request of the defendants for a N200,000 cost, holding that the defendants were “strong institution and personality”.

At the hearing, Jibrin’s counsel, Nwachukwu, told the court that there was a notice of discontinuance filed on Oct. 11, urging the court to discontinue the matter.

The Counsel to the defendants, Mr Kalu Onuoha, did not oppose the application, but asked for a cost of N200,000 for the processes filed by them.

He said the defendants filed many processes in this case before the court went on vacation in July 2016.

Nwachukwu, however, opposed the application with the fact that the defendants did not filed any defence in this matter.

It will be recalled that Jibrin, a lawmaker from Kano State, was suspended by the House of Representatives for 180 legislative days.

PhonesMTN Pays First Batch Of Fine by lekanolas(op): 3:40pm On Jun 29, 2016
MTN had paid the first payment of N30 billion in the terms of settlement of the fine NCC imposed last year for failure to disconnect unregistered subscribers.

With the payment, the company has now paid a total of N80 billion.

The company had earlier paid N50 billion in February.

The fresh payment is coming after the NCC declared MTN as winner of its latest auction for a ten-year frequency spectrum licence for the 2.6GHz band.

The NCC had earlier confirmed that ‎MTN’s bid was in full compliance with the relevant provisions of the Information Memorandum (IM) for the exercise in which MTN emerged as sole approved bidder.

Although Nigeria is one of 28 African countries that currently offer 4G/LTE services, the rate of penetration is restricted to a few major cities. As such, MTN’s success in this auction is a big boost to its plan to deliver global mobile broadband and LTE 4G services to over 60 million customers in Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Ferdi Moolman, said after complying with all the requirements for the 2.6GHz auction and making the licence payment of N18,96 billion to the NCC, MTN had been issued a letter of award.

“With the 2.6 GHz band, we expect to roll out and provide the full range of LTE services to Nigerians, empowering Nigeria with the latest mobile broadband technology,” said Moolman.

MTN has reached a deal with the Nigeria Government regarding the N330 billion (US$3,2 billion) regulators imposed on it last year.

Through the deal, MTN will pay the amount over three years beginning with N30 billion in July.

A similar amount will be paid in March 2017, with the company then paying four traches of N55 billion in March 2018, December 2018, March 2019 and December 2019.

The Naira 50 billion paid in good faith and without prejudice by MTN Nigeria on 24 February 2016 forms part of the monetary component.

Further to the announcements to shareholders regarding this matter, the company said MTN Nigeria subscribes to the voluntary observance of the Code of Corporate Governance for the Telecommunications Industry and will ensure compulsory compliance when the said code is made mandatory for the Telecommunications Industry.

“MTN Nigeria undertakes to take immediate steps to ensure the listing of its shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as soon as commercially and legally possible after the date of execution of the settlement agreement,”

MTN Group stated.

The Nigerian Communications Commission fined MTN for failing to register more than 5 million subscribers.

IPOB announced that Ndigbo in Diaspora have indicated interest to contribute to the relief fund to assist the traders out of their predicament.

The statement was signed by the Administrator of IPOB, Engr Aniebue Anthony.

The statement added that calls had started coming from all over the world in that regards, both to assist the hapless traders while other calls were in commendation of the thoughtfulness of IPOB and of support for the activities of the customary government of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

PoliticsNigeria Will Know No Peace If Anything Happens To Kanu - IPOB by lekanolas(op): 2:42pm On Jan 12, 2016
he spokesperson of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Emma Powerful, has insisted that Biafra is not seceding, but only fighting for the restoration of its nation through peaceful protests.

In a telephone interview with News24 Nigeria on Tuesday, Powerful denied that IPOB had plans to use violence to get its demands met, and called for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu and two others have been charged with treason and other related offences on account of his agitation for the secession of the South-East and other areas of the country to form a sovereign state of Biafra.

Kanu is the face of IPOB and creator of Radio Biafra.

Powerful denied that Kanu had apologized to President Muhammadu Buhari, as reports recently indicated.

“I want the world and the international community to tell Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu immediately. He did not do anything wrong," Powerful said.

Powerful threatened that if anything happened to Kanu, who is said to be ill and has no access to medical care, there won’t be peace in Nigeria.

"Nnamdi Kanu is our Moses, he is the one leading us out of this zoo, presently he is locked up in prison, he is sick, but has no access to medical care, I am calling on the international community to tell them that if anything happens to him, Nigeria will know no peace.

We will not physically fight Nigeria, but we will protest, till they have arrested or shot everybody. How many of us can they arrest or shoot?,” said Powerful.

Powerful laid support to Kanu’s categorization of Nigeria as a zoo. He said the regular Boko Haram killings in the North-eastern part of the country, and president Buhari's support to have Kanu remanded in prison even after the court granted him bail, were some of the reasons why Nigeria could be referred to as a zoo.

PoliticsPDP Governors Appeal For Credible Bayelsa Poll by lekanolas(op): 7:51am On Jan 06, 2016
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has warned the rival All Progressives Congress and other government agencies against interfering in the supplementary election scheduled for Bayelsa State on Saturday.

The governors also expressed confidence in the ability of incumbent governor Henry Seriake Dickson sweeping the polls as a result of his numerous achievements in all sectors of the economy.

Dickson is in a vantage position having led with a lead of some 33 000 votes in six out of the seven local government areas whose results the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced.

“We have an important message to the President and all those whom God has placed in positions of authority in Nigeria today; that the irreducible minimum of democracy is credible election.

I think commitment to democracy and development must be commitment to credible election,” PDP governors Forum Chairman, Olusegun Mimiko, said.

He also appealed to all the major institutional stakeholders in this Saturday’s election to ensure a credible poll.

“If you have passion for the development of this country, one of the critical legacies you can leave for this country is credible election,” Mimiko said.

“Without credible elections, we aren’t going nowhere and I keep saying that APC must take a cue from former President Goodluck Jonathan who handed over power as a sitting President when his party lost, yet heavens did not fall,” Mimiko said.

He said Dickson had performed well to deserve a second term.

Mimiko said this was in view of the life transforming projects the restoration government had put in place.

“I have no doubt in my mind that by Saturday, Bayelsa State will be rejoicing because Governor Henry Seriake Dickson would have been declared unequivocally as the governor of the state again and the restoration will continue

PoliticsTaraba Governorship: Appeal Court Reserves Judgment On Ishaku’s Election by lekanolas(op): 4:52pm On Dec 21, 2015
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Monday reserved judgment in an appeal filed by Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba against the nullification of his electoral victory by a tribunal.

Justice Abdul Aboki said the court would later announce the date for the judgment in the appeal.

The appeal by Ishaku followed the judgment of the Taraba Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Nov. 7 and awarded victory to Mrs Aisha Alhassan of APC.

Mr Kanu Agabi (SAN), Counsel to Ishaku, raised four issues in the appeal.

He said the petition was not accompanied by valid statements as the respondents claimed that it was the fault of the registry.

Agabi said the respondents claimed that the election was marred with corruption yet claimed victory in the election.

He said the respondents also pleaded that Ishaku was not sponsored by the party but later agreed that his sponsorship was not supported by any fact.

He complained that 51 witnesses of the appellant were not reviewed by the tribunal and urged their lordships to allow the appeal.

Mr Solo Akuma (SAN), Counsel to Peoples’ Democratic Party PDP and Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN), Counsel to INEC urged the court to allow Ishaku’s appeal.

However, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), Counsel to Alhassan, filed a cross appeal, saying INEC had no right to clear a candidate for election.

He urged the court to dismiss Ishaku’s appeal and uphold the tribunal’s judgment.

BusinessNew Twist To Fine NCC Imposed On MTN by lekanolas(op): 9:32am On Dec 04, 2015
MTN said it would re-engage the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) amid some confusion around the reduction of a fine the regulator has imposed for a failure to disconnect millions of unregistered subscribers.

On Thursday, MTN reported it received a letter, dated Wednesday, from the NCC (the First Letter) informing the company that, after considering its request, it had taken the decision to reduce the fine imposed on MTN Nigeria from the original N1,04 trillion (US$5,2 billion) to N674 billion.

However, it has emerged MTN has received a further letter from the NCC, dated Thursday (the Second Letter), which was stated to supersede the First Letter, informed the company that the fine had actually been reduced by 25 percent to N780 billion and not by 35 percent to 674 billion, as was stated in the First Letter.

The payment date remained December 31.

“Neither the First Letter nor the Second Letter sets out any details on how the reduction was determined,” said MTN on Friday.

“The Company is carefully considering both the First Letter and the Second Letter, and the Executive Chairman Phuthuma Nhleko will immediately and urgently re-engage with the Nigerian Authorities before responding formally.”

The company stated it was essential to follow due process to ensure the best outcome.

It said all factors having a bearing on the situation would be “thoroughly and carefully” considered before the company arrived at a final decision.

NCC officials could not be reached for comment.

The fine it imposed on MTN Nigeria relates to the late disconnecting of

5,1 million MTN Nigerian subscribers in August and September 2015.

Senior officials at the Group’s Head Office in South Africa and its Nigerian entity have resigned over the laxity.

So, sometimes you have the North edition, the South edition, Abuja edition. The cover of each edition is different from each other.

PoliticsKogi Poll: Wada Heads To Court by lekanolas(op): 1:29pm On Nov 26, 2015
Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State may on Thursday approach the Federal High Court in Lokoja to challenge the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a supplementary election in Kogi State on December 5.

Wada in suit to be filed on his behalf by his lawyers argued that INEC erred by saying that it would go ahead with the supplementary election despite the death of Abubakar Audu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 21 governorship election

Wada contended that what the electoral body is saying with its decision to conduct the supplementary election is that the votes cast for the late Audu were still valid in death.

Audu died on Sunday, a few hours after the commission declared the November 21 governorship poll in the state inconclusive.

The deceased had polled 240,867 votes in the election while Wada scored 199 514 votes, leaving a gap of 41,353 votes between the two leading candidates in the election.

INEC had declared the election inconclusive on the grounds that cancelled votes or registered voters in the 91 polling units, where the exercise did not take place were 49 953, a figure higher than Audu’s lead of 41,353 votes.

Wada is therefore praying the court to declare him winner on the claim that he is the candidate with the highest number of votes alive.

According to sources privy to the court action, Wada is arguing that the difference in votes between him and Philip Salawu, the Labour Party candidate is more than 49 000 and as such there should be no supplementary election.

Wada, it was further gathered, argued that INEC would not have considered a supplementary or a re-run election had it been that it was the candidate that took third or fourth that died.

PoliticsProphet Offers Prayers To Bring Audu Back To Life by lekanolas(op):
The burial arrangements of the former governor of Kogi State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in last Saturday’s governorship election, Abubakar Audu, took a new dimension on Monday morning.

A prophet showed up at Audu’ residence early in the morning and promised to bring him back to life.

The prophet promised to offer prayers that would revive Audu and bring him back to life.

Security inside and family members would have none of it but angry youths break the door open.

The prayer man was forcefully taken in by the wish of the crowd and they have all joined in the prayers for the resurrection of Audu with Holy Ghost fire renting the air as well as shouts of Allahu Akbar .

At a point, there was a wild jubilation among the crowd that Audu has resurrected.

The prayers session is still on going as at the time of filling this report.

PoliticsAPC Applauds Resignation Of Wike’s Spokesman by lekanolas(op): 4:53pm On Nov 06, 2015
The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has welcomed the resignation of Opunabo Inko-Tariah, as spokesperson to Governor Nyesom Wike.

Inko-Tariah on Friday resigned his appointment, accusing the governor of starving his office of funds and “stubbornness” in heading professional media advice.

The APC in a statement signed by Chris Finebone, the party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, said it was not surprised Inko-Tariah was telling ‘sordid stories’ of neglect and disrespect for his views and advice by the outgoing governor.

The statement reads: “APC welcomes the uncommon courage displayed by Opunabo Inko-Tariah in resigning as the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the embattled governor of Rivers State this morning,” said Chris Finebone, APC Rivers spokesperson.

“As a party, the APC knew that it was only a matter of time before all well-meaning proud sons and daughters of Rivers State who find themselves in Wike’s sinking ship jumped to safety.

This is not only because his governorship will soon become history, but because the malevolently unique style of Wike whose hallmark behaviour hinges on divide-and-rule exasperates decent minds,” said Finebone.

The party was not surprised Inko-Tariah was telling ‘sordid stories’ of neglect and disrespect for his views and advice by the outgoing governor. These are all well-known character pattern of Nyesom Wike.

“The APC would like to urge all other well-meaning sons and daughters of our dear state who have found themselves, one way or the other, in Wike’s makeshift government to resign and leave immediately,” said Finebone.

PoliticsSupreme Court Upholds Ambode’s Victory by lekanolas(op): 4:55pm On Oct 20, 2015
The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the victory of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in the April 11 2015 governorship election in Lagos State.

The court upheld the concurrent decisions of the election petitions tribunal and the Court of Appeal on the petition filed against the outcome of the election by Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party.

It would be recalled that following Governor Ambode’s victory at the April 11, 2015 polls, Agbaje filed a petition at the Election Petitions Tribunal challenging the victory at the polls.

The Tribunal had on Wednesday, July 1, struck out the petition filed against the election of Ambode of the APC by Jimi Agbaje following a preliminary objection filed by the counsel to the APC Candidate, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN).

The Appeal Court also on August 26, upheld the ruling of the State Election Petitions Tribunal and also ordered the PDP candidate to compensate each of the respondents in the sum of N50, 000 each.

Tuesday’s ruling of the Supreme Court puts to bed the issues surrounding the April 11 governorship election in Lagos State.
