BusinessHow To Make Bottom Of The Pyramid Marketing (markets For Poor) Work In Nigeria by leMuhito(op): 8:18am On May 14, 2012
Hello house!

We've been treating series of question on our site about "How To Make Bottom Of The Pyramid Marketing (Markets For Poor) Work in Nigeria" and we'll need input from you all.

In economics, the bottom of the pyramid is the largest, but poorest socio-economic group. In global terms, this is the 2.5 billion people who live on less than $2.50 per day.[1] The phrase “bottom of the pyramid” is used in particular by people developing new models of doing business that deliberately target that demographic, often using new technology. This field is also often referred to as the "Base of the Pyramid" or just the "BoP".
If this topic is new to you, do well to go through our articles first.

Marketing to the Poor
Question: May God continue to bless your works for the impactful response to my request for hints, on what to do in order for Nigerians to give a little to change the lives of the rural poor. It was quite rewarding to me personally and my organisation generally. I’m back with another related question – What is the place of marketing towards alleviating the plight of the poor? – Geraldine Kumba.

For the benefit of other readers, Mrs. Geraldine Kumba works for a humanitarian/developmental organisation that has helping the poor in Nigeria as a major objective. Her earlier query and my response to a related issue are conveyed in an earlier article entitled, Promotion for Nigerians to give a little to change lives. Request for it, if you are interested or visit the business section of “Iroyin” (Nigerian online news/other purposes portal).

Nairaland GeneralShould Nigeria Capital City Be Moved From Abuja? by leMuhito(op): 12:35pm On Dec 24, 2011
After reading the article below, I wish to know your thoughts. Should Nigeria capital city be moved to another well-planned area with more forms of transportation like rail transportation within the city to ease the gridlock?

Culled from ]http:///3z3pi

It is now 20 years since Abuja became the capital city of Nigeria. In a matter of 20 years, the 8,000 square kilometre empty space has become a thriving government, commercial and cosmopolitan city.

Interestingly, in those 20 years also, unlike muted fears expressed in the earlier days, all Nigerians can truly feel at home in Abuja. However, in those 20 years also, the city has managed to import all that made it necessary to have the capital city move from Lagos to Abuja, especially the increasing population and the increasing gridlocks.

Two main reasons would have been responsible for the movement of Nigeria’s capital to Abuja. First, though not unusual, the position of Lagos at the edge of the South West provided limitation in distance to many parts of the country. Second, Lagos had become so congested and lost the serenity often associated with capital cities across the globe. Of course, there are exceptions also. According to these arguments, Lagos had become chaotic, overcrowded and some parts squalid and a better and more suitable place had to be found for Nigeria’s capital city.

The journey to Abuja as capital city of Nigeria had started under the government of Murtala Muhammed in 1976, following the recommendations of a committee set up to determine a suitable capital city for Nigeria. However, it was in the 1980s that construction took off, and a decade after, Abuja officially became the capital city of Nigeria, when Ibrahim Babaginda, then head of state, moved the seat of power to the city.

The main attribute of Abuja city is that it is a planned one. Abuja took off from architects’ drawing boards and most of the initial plans are in place today. However, Abuja now suffers from many of the ills that affected Lagos. And the ministerial authorities in Abuja cannot do anything about this – the fact that Abuja and Lagos suffers from development imbalance across the country. The excessive migration witnessed in both states cannot just be alluded to security issues, but is a fallout of non existent or few opportunities elsewhere. Abuja, and even Lagos, will thus benefit from balanced development across the country, both in terms of opportunities and infrastructure.

It is also a shame for a planned city like Abuja to repeat the same mistake made in Lagos. As it is currently, there is only one means of transport in Abuja – by road. Though a light rail is planned, the authorities have left rather late, as it can now only be imagined how long other means of transport and transport users can be integrated when it is completed. For a planned city as well, it is very easy to see that very little attention has been paid to pedestrians and bicycle users. As a matter of urgency, these different needs should be integrated before it is too late.

As a follow-up to the last paragraph, and partially as a result of the issues raised, the greatest failing in Abuja today is the gridlocks. While this cannot be compared to Lagos yet, the population dynamics and the pace of infrastructure development in the city signals a totally gridlocked city in 10 years, except critical steps are taken to modernise the means of transport in the city, and provide alternatives for residents and visitors alike. For instance, we believe the journey to the airport is a classic rail journey from the city centre. The time to act is now.

Business4 Smartphone Apps That Can Help Take Your Business With You by leMuhito(op): 10:23am On Dec 08, 2011
Scan2PDF

In the world of business, clutter leads to disaster.  Owning your own business means having to keep all that clutter organized on your own, which can sometimes seem like a business in and of itself. Scan2PDF lets you scan documents with your phone’s camera and then send those files to your email as PDFs.  Essentially it allows you to keep all your paper records and files, but without the paper, so you can stay uncluttered and productive.

Square

Cash is all but a thing of the past.  Square turns your phone into a credit card payment station, so that you can conduct business on the run, no matter where you are.  Along with the program, you’ll receive a credit card reader—you have to see it to believe it— which charges your account 2.25% per transaction, but doesn’t charge any monthly fees and doesn’t bind you in any sort of contract.  Freelance businesses could especially benefit from Square, as it puts money into your pocket faster, without the need or invoices.  If receiving credit card payment is on your wish list, get square.

ProOnGo

Nobody likes keeping track of business expenses; it’s a hassle and chore, and about as fun as paying taxes.  But with ProOnGo, tracking receipts, mileage, time, credit card transactions and plugging the data into expense reports will be easier than breathing.  ProOnGo tracks all your expenses for you and then lets you create Excel spreadsheets, QuickBooks reports, or any other kind of document that suits you and your accountant.  There are three different packages that offer varying degrees of advanced tracking, all with different monthly fees.

Evernote

When you own a business, and especially when you’re trying to start one, new ideas come at you fast, from a million different places, and often when you are least prepared to remember them.  With Evernote, you can capture and record any ideas you have, anywhere you go (as long as you have your phone with you.)  Evernote lets you create an account that you can access from any platform, and allows you to share notes you take.  Say you see a sign on the road that inspires you, or you come across a website that has some data that will be very valuable to your business.  You can snap a photo of the sign or take a screenshot of the site, and it will be saved to your Evernote account, where you can access it from your phone, computer, or any other device.  Never forget another idea.

WebmastersA Guide To App Marketing For Your Business by leMuhito(op): 10:07am On Dec 08, 2011
What is app marketing?

As the name suggests, app marketing is nothing but mobile phones application marketing. Spending your precious time on creating sensational applications for mobile phones is all good. But how do you make them known to the world? This is where App marketing comes into play.

Why is app marketing important?

Take for instance, the iPhone application store. Now this is one of the best places to be on Earth, simply because of the wonderful Apple applications it has got to offer. It is quite natural for you to believe that your newly designed application flourishes as soon as you host them on the Apple’s store.

But think again. There are more than 40,000 applications in the Apple’s store. And this number is all set to double up in a short span of time. What is the probability of your newly designed application being recognized or even being noticed? Believe it or not, the days when you host your newly designed applications and just sit back and relax hoping that they would gain fame and fortune for you, are all gone. You need to market your product properly before hoping for any kind of success.

Pre-Launch App Marketing

This method is widely used in other industries too in order to capture customer’s attention early. The pre-launch marketing activity for mobile apps helps in keeping hold of one’s targeted audience well in advance. These early activities also spark interest into buyers on the product that you have worked so hard.

BusinessWhy Marketing Is Relevant During Economic Downturn by leMuhito(op): 9:57am On Dec 08, 2011
At times like these, marketers are often faced with difficult choices about the best options towards ways of utilising what has been provided for various aspects of marketing in the budget. Wise moves dictate that controlling costs are vital during times of recession, as not providing for needful marketing activities could be suicidal to the company. Alex, I perceive you must be in a position to influence or determine who leaves or remains in your organisation at these times, when merely observing several premises in many parts of Lagos that used to be vibrant with business activities now obviously show signs of non-habitation.

You’ll agree with me that not too long ago, when companies and mainly banks around were posting all forms of profits (real and “paper”), there was the clamour to expand the sales force and remain vibrant in various facets of marketing. It seemed then that most job openings were for “marketing executives”. Now that the tide has changed, in most cases companies not only drastically reduce the strength of these sales force, some even refrain from marketing activities completely. Let me use one word to describe any move to slash or even emasculate marketing – MISTAKE.

Typically, during hard times it seems a norm to slash advertising budget, for example, in line with a ‘mantra’ of cost cutting. Such often yields regrettable consequences later on. To my mind, a recession is both a threat and an opportunity. Where a company lowers its advertising budget while its competitor increases, it is a recipe for its brand to perish.

It seems Google now pay back their customers (Adwords e.g Dealfish Tradestable) by competing with them.

Did anyone know if Google try to acquire Dealfish, Tradestable and Nairalist and the companies rejected their bid? I need to know this before I conclude.

Seems Dealfish and Tradestable would now need to spend more money in ads. But will it be on Google Adwords?
