Building projects require cheap labour and manpower, hence the use of the Israelites as slaves. The same happened in the time of Solomon, when after his death, his subjects had to beg his son, Rehoboam, to reduce the burden placed on them by his father.
It is generally agreed that America was built on the back of slaves (cheap, or free labour)
