Lmao. And glo is immune to data breeches? Same glo that you had to link your NIN which is linked to your other registrations?

Or your location cannot be triangulated while on the network?

Dey play.

I'm happy to read Starlink has made its way to Nigeria, bringing an end to the frustration caused by subpar 2G providers claiming to offer 4G/5G services. Although the cost of the Starlink device may be high (around 200k), the quality-wise monthly subscription is relatively affordable, making it a viable option for many.

This arrival of Starlink is sure to shake up the market and force the competition, such as Uncle Yellow, Green, and Red, to step up their game.
Is starlink good for mobility?

Why would any sensible entity wanting to surveil the poverty capital of the world do it by charging 600$ for hardware? When they can give you free Facebook and Twitter access without paying for a data subscription on a phone you already own?

Lmao

GBTYO:
Shakeup the internet market at $600 installation price and $43 per month subscription?

Elon got his shills here to divert from what the starlink is meant for which is total state surveillance and the incoming digital eNaira.

Nairaland is the worst forum filled with paid opinion crafting Shills.

Covid ,Chanji and the obidient should have made this clear

5$ satellite hardware? Good luck.

jackcanfield:
All I know is that Dr Mike Ade**ga had signed a contract with a french Satallite company, once Starlink starts to make inroad , Dr Mike would crash the price and make it mobile friendly. The Chinese would create a $5 hardware for him ..Elon Musk would just ko gba wole.

With the 600$ installation price and 43$ monthly subscription as claimed by a Nairalandlander, I doubt an average Nigeria can go for it … hence, is meant for the rich guys. While the masses carry on with their normal MTN Glo and Etizalat subscriptions.

Lol. Your government regulated providers aren't doing that already? Remind me again how long Twitter was banned for in Nigeria? How about what happened during nationwide protests in 2020?

mach7:
Yes, but we need to be careful.

Starlink is an independent internet service, not under any visible control of government and hence cannot be shutdown or restricted.

If and when certain foreign subversive elements want to cause problems in Nigeria by propagating fake news and instigating violent uprisings, Starlink would be a veritable tool in the hands of such elements.

This is a boon for real estate development.

Now you can build estates away from the crowded city centers for people who work remotely, and still provide reliable internet services. These are fantastic times.

God bless Elon for being such a visionary.

Go confirm what services they pay for. Corporate dedicated internet is not the same as you glo mobile shared data plan.

martineverest:
275k for the device and 19k per month subscription....many companies will jump on it as it's far cheaper in the long run.

Some companies pay more than 100k per month for data subscription in Nigeria...compare that with 19k

Once you understand what you're dealing with, you can easily recognize what's possible and what's not.
You don't have 5$ 2G modems even in 2023, where do you want to get 5$ low-earth orbit receiver hardware from?

You can spread the payments on the subscription it's easy that way . Just get a valid contract . You should be considering volume not a segment of the market, the fact that you pay that much doesn't mean you would enjoy the service optimally giving other challenges like power. You can't use U.S template for the biggest market in Africa.

Not really. It's a fixed access device, it doesn't compete with mobile Internet access. It might affect their corporate sales though but Starlink's capital outset is pretty high comparatively. Also you can't repair any of the hardware components if they get damaged and given the nature of our storms likelihood of damage might be quite high.

Did Apple shake up phone market in Nigeria?.

Everyone will still sell their market massively.

It's all good for us, we need to be set free from all those African useless telecommunication companies without visions.

We'll see how it pans out. Mr Musk didn't give a bleep about the Naija market until he ran into wahala with his Twitter purchase (which is giving him sleepless nights and lower back pains), and the emerging competition in the EV car industry.

A good read!

They have to live in close proximity to each other though for it to be effective. Remember, they will be connecting to a router (and only one can connect to the satellite) that's connected to the Satellite. And a router's range is limited.

Yes, you have to buy a device for each location. Unless you want to be hauling the satellite dish/router back and forth to each location. This is broadband internet that's supposed to be fixed at one location. The satellite will have to be installed and probably attached to a building and then connected to the router. So, it's not really portable.
