Breaking: FG to revoke DisCos license over poor power supply
Federal Government, on Wednesday, threatened to revoke the licenses of power Distribution Companies over persistent poor power supply across the country.


The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this known on Wednesday.

The minister, through his X handle, expressed that the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria have been summoned to a crucial meeting to explain the current challenges faced nation.

“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and to collectively find lasting solutions,” he said.

He lamented the insufficient electricity distribution by the Discos, despite the generation companies, saying “The ministry has been exerting pressure on the Generating Companies to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW.

Despite this progress, certain distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan,”

He stated his commitment to hold all distribution companies accountable for their performance as “willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed.”

He added, “Additionally, I have instructed TCN to prioritise repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions. During recent supervisory visits to power-generating plants, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the sector.

“Plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, which will alleviate the financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide. I urge electricity consumers to remain patient as we work tirelessly to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.”

Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, impounded 21 trucks loaded with food and non-food items.

The anti-graft agency said the trucks were heading towards N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central African Republic and Cameroon.

It said the trucks were intercepted in a sting operation at major exit routes along Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads, Borno State.

A statement issued by the agency said, “Investigation showed food items cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of operatives of the Commission.



“Further checks showed that the Waybills covering the goods carried by trucks indicated their destinations as N'djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic and Cameroon respectively.



“The arrest of the trucks is expected to stem the tide of food insecurity occasioned by unscrupulous antics of smugglers across the country.



“Suspects arrested with the trucks are being profiled and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

IBD Dende Filmed Threatening To Kill Customs Officer For Seizing His Smuggled Goods [Video]

A businessman Ibrahim Egungbohun Dende, better known as IBD Dende, has been filmed threatening an Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) who prevented the smuggling of his goods from Benin Republic into Nigeria.

The incident, which took place in January, was shared by Fisayo Soyombo, the founder and editor-in-chief of FIJ, on Twitter.


FIJ’s undercover investigation released in February exposed the collaboration between Customs bosses and smugglers, revealing a system where bribes are taken, and patrol teams are betrayed by leaking information about their itinerary.


In the video shared by FIJ, IBD Dende could be seen threatening a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) official named Rotimi, who intercepted his vehicles carrying smuggled rice.

The angry businessman was heard repeatedly telling the Customs officer Rotimi, “May it never be well with you.”

FIJ subsequently confirmed that the said Rotimi is an Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC).

Despite wielding guns, the Customs officers were seen attempting to pacify Dende, urging him to calm down.

Sources confirm that the armed Customs officers seen in the video are affiliated with Dende’.

‘All the Customs officers with guns you see in those videos are his boys,” one source told FIJ.


Dende’ boasted about his connections, saying, “I have called Ejigbunu”, and ordering the receiver at the other end of the phone: “Call Wale, call Wale.”

FIJ confirms that ‘Wale’ is Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the current Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), and ‘Ejigbunu’ is Hussein Ejigbunu, Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit Zone A.

This aligns with FIJ’s exclusive report on the NCS facilitating the passage of smuggled goods from Zone A to Oja-Odan, Dende’s stronghold.

In the video, Dende’ repeatedly emphasizes his connections and authority, threatening to expose irregularities within the Customs.

“You will find out that the teeth are sharper than the knife. I will show you that I am Dende,” Dende can be heard screaming in the video, while an apparently scared Rotimi can be heard wondering: “What have I done? He is threatening to kill me.”

In the second video, Dende was heard accusing Customs officers of smuggling rice themselves while intercepting his consignment.

“I saw your boss’s trailer — four trailers that loaded rice — in Seme,” he can be heard saying. “What did you do about it? I will not accept it! I have told Ejigbunu I will not agree!”

The Nigerian government is demanding at least $10 billion as retribution from Binance amid crackdown on the crypto exchange platform in desperate moves to salvage the value of the nation’s local currency.

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Tinubu, made this known Friday morning in an interview with the BBC.

Binance profited substantially from its “illegal transactions” in Nigeria while the nation suffered huge losses, Mr Onanuga said during the interview, monitored by PREMIUM TIMES.

In its first official confirmation of the clampdown efforts on the activities of Binance and other crypto platforms, a top official of the ONSA confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the security adviser’s office is coordinating an interagency investigation into the operations of Binance.

“I am confirming that the office of the national security adviser, as part of ongoing operations in the foreign exchange market with the CBN and other law enforcement and security agencies, is coordinating an interagency investigation into the operations of Binance,” Zakari Mijinyawa, head of Strategic Communication at the Office of the National Security Adviser, told PREMIUM TIMES after multiple requests for comment Thursday.

However, Mr Mijinyawa did not provide any other details about the investigations as of press time Thursday night.

On Wednesday, this newspaper reported how the government detained two executives of the crypto exchange platform amid desperate efforts to stabilise the nation’s foreign exchange market.

Sources with details of the matter told PREMIUM TIMES that the two executives were detained in Abuja, the federal capital territory, days after they flew into the country as part of moves to negotiate with the Nigerian authorities amid crackdown on the crypto platform.

They had arrived in Nigeria earlier in the week to negotiate with the government amid the crackdown. However, the meetings were deadlocked as Binance officials declined to meet some of the demands put forward by the Nigerian government.

They were also accused of operating a business worth billions without the requisite registrations and documentation.

According to sources who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday evening, the Nigerian authorities requested Binance executives to provide data relating to transactions involving the Nigerian Naira on the Binance platform in the last seven years. They also demanded that some other data relating to Nigeria be deleted from the Binance platform.

However, the Binance executives insisted that they should be taken to their respective countries’ embassies before they could comply.

While the full identities of the two Binance executives remain sketchy, PREMIUM TIMES gathered that one of them is an American and the other a British-Pakistani.

The Nigerian government also obtained a court warrant to detain the officials for at least twelve days in the first instance, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

Retribution
On Friday, Mr Onanuga claimed that Binance is not registered in Nigeria and has no presence in the country. He alleged that people used the platform to arbitrarily fix dollar-naira rates; a practice he said negatively impacted the value of the local currency.

He explained further that the Binance team were already cooperating with the Nigerian government by providing useful information, and had already suspended naira related transactions on the platform.



Nigeria nevertheless wants Binance to pay at least $10 billion in retribution, Mr Onanuga said.

Earlier in the week, Mr Onanuga had alleged that if not stopped, the cryptocurrency trading platform will destroy the Nigerian economy by arbitrarily fixing foreign exchange rate.

“If we don’t clamp down on Binance, Binance will destroy the economy of this country. They just fix the rate,” the presidential spokesman said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday.

Last week, PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Nigerian government blocked the online platforms of Binance and other crypto firms to avert what it considers continuous manipulation of the forex market and illicit movement of funds.

Apart from Binance, other platforms such as Forextime, OctaFX, Crypto, FXTM, Coinbase, Kraken, among others, were equally blocked.

Presidency and regulatory sources said the government decided to move against Binance and other crypto firms following reports that currency speculators and money launderers were using them to execute criminal activities. Authorities believe the ‘criminal activities’ going on on platforms are contributing significantly to the weakening of the naira.

Binance, a digital assets platform, serves as a window for peer to peer transactions allowing users to advertise interest to sell or buy currencies of their choice.

In September 2023, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) placed a disclaimer on Binance Nigeria Limited, saying the platform was “neither registered nor regulated by the Commission and its operations in Nigeria are therefore illegal”.

In its reaction last week, Binance said “users behaving in a manipulative way” will be removed from its platform.

“As industry leaders, we are working hand in hand with local authorities, lawmakers, and regulators to ensure we act on non-compliance,” the platform added, noting that it is “setting an upper limit for ads, filtering and removing bad ads, requiring and raising deposits for merchants posting ads as well as processes for actioning against any market manipulators.”

The crypto exchange platform has, however, declined further comments amid the ongoing clampdown.

Speakers of state Houses of Assembly in the South-West have advocated for the immediate creation of state police and devolution of powers to address the hydra-headed insecurity and other socio-economic challenges facing the country.

The speakers, in a communique signed and made available to journalists at their meeting held in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti State, said more power should be given to the sub-nationals to further enable them to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.


The communique was co-signed by the conference chairman and Ekiti State speaker, Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Adebo Ogundoyin, Olamide Oladiji, and Adewale Egbedun, the speakers of Oyo, Ondo, and Osun respectively.

The speakers stressed the dire need for holistic collaborative measures among the South-West governors to address the prevailing security challenges facing the region.


They also called for increased regional integration efforts to enhance economic growth and development across the six South-Western states.

The communique reads: “The speakers endorse the devolution of power to states, especially in the realm of security, and emphasise the importance of state policing as a means to enhance security and law enforcement at the local level.

“The Conference calls on the federal government to urgently address the rising economic concerns, particularly the shortage of food, and urges citizens to support government efforts in finding lasting solutions to these challenges.

“The conference agrees to host a legislative summit to address critical issues affecting the Southwest region and to foster collaboration and cooperation among the legislative assemblies of the Southwest states.


“We hereby affirm our commitment to these resolutions and pledge to work collectively towards the advancement and prosperity of the Southwest region.”

Some unknown gunmen have attacked the home of the spokesperson of Isseke youth at Ubaha-Isseke, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The rampaging attacker razed the home of the late Mr. Oliver Okafoeze.


Investigations revealed that the deployment of security operatives to Ubaha-Isseke in an attempt to curtail the activities of unknown gunmen in the community led to the attack.

According to Okafoeze’s daughter, Onyinye, the assailants targeted his father’s residence and left behind “a trail of devastation and anguish.”

Recounting the ordeal, Onyinye said, “On the 4th of January 2024, The tranquillity of the night was shattered by the gunmen who shot sporadically at anything in sight. The situation forced people to run for safety.

“The home of Mr Oliver Okafoeze was burnt with an assassination attempt on his wife and children. Miraculously, their absence spared them from the clutches of this nefarious assault.”

The attackers only left ruins behind

She also informed that the palace of HRH Igwe Emmanuel Nnabuife, the Igwe of Isseke, suffered a similar fate on the ill-fated day.

“The very heart of our community along with the homes of countless residents was devoured by the merciless gunmen. In its wake, it left behind a trail of destruction, reducing properties and vehicles worth millions of Naira to ashes.

“Such is the gravity of the plight of Late Mr. Okafoeze’s wife and children that they find themselves trembling under the weight of death threats,” Onyinye lamented.

Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho has vowed to ensure that killer herdsmen are chased away from the South West region.


Igboho, in a viral video, said the federal government and the soldiers deployed to Yoruba land, especially in Ekiti State, where two monarchs were recently killed in broad daylight, cannot combat the dare devil killers.

He urged the people to stand with him to liberate themselves from the herders encroaching on their lands.

He emphasized the need to mount security in all the Yoruba lands by themselves, if not, they will take their lands.

Igboho also stressed that there is no need to wait for the government or anyone to take action.

He suggested working in unison to stop these marauders’ activities in their lands.

He also debunked rumors about him working for politicians, stating that if he could be working for politicians, they would still want him dead.

The Ibadan-based activist was arrested in Benin Republic on his way to Germany on July 19, 2023, after his residence was raided by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in July 2021.

He was subsequently released in October 2023 and recently returned to Nigeria to bury his mother.

Sunday Igboho has taken charge in the fight against killer-herders in the South West region, emphasizing the need for unity and self-reliance in ensuring the safety of their land.

56-year-old Nigerian national arrested with drugs worth over N400m in India
The Anti-Narcotic Cell Police Station of Goa Police in India has arrested a 56-year-old Nigerian national during a narcotics raid in Arpora, Bardez, Panaji.

The accused, identified as Innocent Okezuonu Anaemem, was found in possession of drugs valued at Rs. 74 lakh in the international market, the police said in a statement on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

Anaemem, who was residing in Arpora, was arrested during a raid conducted at the weekend based on reliable information.


The seized contraband includes 480 grams of cocaine worth Rs. 72 lakhs, 15 grams of Ecstasy powder valued at Rs. 1.50 lakhs, and 250 grams of Charas worth Rs. 1.25 lakhs.

The Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC) meticulously monitored the accused's activities for nearly a week, employing both human intelligence and technical surveillance.

The operation culminated in the arrest of the Nigerian national, along with the confiscation of drugs, some cash, and a two-wheeler scooter used for the illicit trade.

The police disclosed that the accused had three cases registered against him in Goa, with pending trials before the respective courts.

In a notable incident in 2013, Anaemem was arrested in the infamous National Highway Blockade case at "O" Coqueiro junction, Porvorim.


Additionally, he faced charges of overstaying without legal documents and assaulting a detention centre employee during a separate case.

The raid, led by PSI Pravin Shimepurushkar and a team of police officers, operated under the supervision of DYSP ANC Shri Nerlon Albuquerque and SP ANC Shri Bossuet Silva.

Investigation into the matter is ongoing under the guidance of PSI Priyanka Garodi of ANC PS.

One Chinalu Ogbonna has killed his father, Mmaduka Ogbonna, for ritual purpose in Abia State.

Chinalu reportedly strangled his 57-year-old father to death and gouged out his left eye with the purpose of using it for money ritual.

The suspect, who committed the crime at their residence at Umueze Road, Umuahia, has since been arrested by the police in the state.

The spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka confirmed the incident.

“Investigations revealed that he strangled his father to death and intended to use his left eye for money rituals. The corpse has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and exhibits have been recovered.”

A 27-year-old man, Chinalu Ogbonna, has allegedly killed his father, Maduka Ogbonna, and removed his left eye.

Vanguard gathered that the incident happened at midnight on Monday at a compound opposite Junior Secondary School, Amuzukwu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.


Though the cause of the incident is still sketchy, Vanguard learnt that the suspect who was arrested by the youths of the area confessed to have wanted to use his father for ritual.
